Ethan Chen - Capstone

Posted by Ethan Chen in Capstone · Todd/Spry · Wed on Monday, May 10, 2021 at 7:04 pm

For my capstone project, I wanted to use my passion for running to somehow help the SLA community. What I came up with was to create a virtual 5k race. People inside or outside of the SLA community are welcome to sign up for the race. Participants of this race are allowed to complete the race however they like. They can walk, run, bike, swim, or a combination of other activities. The participants had a one-week window to complete the race. They have the freedom to choose a time, a route, and a method to accumulate a distance of 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) They have the option to do it all in one go or break it up over the week. My first step was to get the word out to the community about an upcoming 5k race. I sent out an interest survey to get an idea of how many people will participate. After getting my responses I was able to gather a rough estimate on how many people were interested. I started to budget my expenses on Google Spreadsheets and create three columns on the Sheets: a low bar, a middle bar, and a high bar. In the meantime, I attended Braskem meetings and pitched my proposed budget for my race. Once I reached full funding from the race, I ordered T-shirts and medals for my race. I set up my registration site and marketed my race all over social media and in the SLA advisory memo. The race sold out with 104 participants in total and raised $1942. After race week half of the participants submitted their results onto the result page and a few have submitted photos of themselves doing the race. Throughout the process, I learned a lot about what it takes to create a race from scratch and get people on board to participate in it. The COVID pandemic also presented me with challenges like how large gatherings are prohibited and not being at school to market my race in person. I had to work my way around those challenges but I am proud that I complete my capstone in an all-virtual learning environment.

Wow! A lot has happened while we read deeper into the book. Today, we continue to talk about some of the wild events that have unfolded in the book Dracula. This week we take a look at the literary lenses of this book mainly both the New Historicist Lense and the Marxist. We will use these lenses to help give us a critical look at why certain decisions were made and understand why some of the characters might have acted in a certain way. Make sure to hear from our “sponsor” at the end of the podcast!

Advanced Essay #3: Misconceptions about immigration

Posted by Ethan Chen in English 3 · Block · B Band on Monday, January 13, 2020 at 5:49 pm

On the US border in the South of California near Tijuana, you can see many immigrants crowding around the steel barriers to get into the United States. From the distance, you can see the steel beam fences standing 26 feet tall preventing immigrants from entering illegally into the United States. Barbed wires placed in front of the steel beam fences as reinforcement. On the United States side behind the steel beam fences, you can see the American flag tied to a pole flying in the wind. You can also see spotlights and surveillance cameras in the vicinity. Thousands of immigrants line up across the border near the steel fences and barbed wire. Then a can of tear gas was shot into the crowd near a mother and her two young girls. She helps pull them away from the tear gas as the girls, one without any proper footwear, and the other with sandals, started to run with their mother. This is just one of the many things that many nonimmigrant people don’t understand about the immigration process. They often don’t understand the things that immigrants experience as they travel to America and settle into American soil. Specifically, their thoughts and internal emotions are misinterpreted and/or not taken into consideration.

One thing that people do not understand is how much work immigrants have to do to come to America. Most Americans do not understand the struggles that immigrants have to go through as they make their way to the United States. We assume that immigrants and migrants just simply obtain their documentation, walk up to the border, get everything checked out and are then able to live in the United States. We fail to realize and ask ourselves what did it take for them to come to America and what drives them to come to America. Immigrants and foreigners coming to live in America all have different reasons why they came to America. Some came to America to start new lives, for educational opportunities, for family, or they are fleeing from violence. Americans only know the stories of immigrants coming in by boat or plane for a new life but the stories of the risky and dangerous journey to travel to America is not widely known. In Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario, the author decides to take this journey with Enrique to find his mother in the United States. In the prologue, she explains how she will travel in Enrique’s footsteps and manage the constant fear of gangs and bandits on the train and at border checkpoints coming to beat, rob, and/or rape her. Not only gangs but environmental factors were also dangers as anything could cause her to fall off the train and run her over. Corrupt government officials can be spotted robbing migrants as well. After the journey, she goes home with trauma and suffers from intense internal emotions. This experience shows her a different side of what it is like to be an immigrant. It is not a simple one and done story but it a complexity of different stories that we need to view in multiple lense and not only through one lens. It is not a simple one answer question but a variety of different experiences that we have to take into consideration.

Although immigrants move to America for better opportunities and a better quality of life, most immigrants often think about home. Immigrants, especially those who are older, have a strong connection to their homes. They had established a life in their home country ever since they were a kid. They know their country better than anyone who hasn’t lived and experienced it for most of their childhood. Moving away to start life in a new environment and a different culture is intimidating. It takes a lot of time to adjust to that change, but what will not go away is the feeling of being far away from where they had grown up. An example of this nostalgic feeling of home can be found in Behold The Dreamers a novel by Imbolo Mbue. From pages 37-46, the main character, Jende is driving Clark, his boss, back to the office from DC when Clark asks Jende about what his home country, Limbe, was like. Jende delivers a rich description of Limbe with a nostalgic, reminiscent tone. He describes it as he misses his home. When Clark asks Jende why he moves back to America, he had a hard time answering the question and gave very vague and generic answers. The way he describes Limbe was heavily contrasted with his details about why Limbe is a bad place. Clark also talks about his past before he came to New York. He talked about his Illinois childhood home and talks about his childhood life in Illinois and the way in which he misses his home. As you can see, immigrants also have the same feelings and emotions like a normal person being away from home. People think that immigrants do not miss their homes at all. Those immigrants want to forget their home country and where they came from. As humans, we all have a strong connection to where we all once grew up from and immigrants have that same connection as well.

Finally, people have misconceptions about the countries that immigrants have come from. We see it in the media all the time where third-world countries are in constant conflict and turmoil. When we hear and see video clips about this, we build up this stereotype that these places that people are immigrating from are just terrible places. What we fail to understand is how once these places were actually lively. In the Sea Prayer: a 360 degree illustrated film by award-winning novelist Khaled Hosseini; it shows a 360 video of a father narrating to his son on their life in Syria before the war and then to the unknown future. In the 360 films, you can see the illustrations of their farmhouse on the riverside, the beautiful old city with a mosque and a church, and the city center. Then it went into ruins and chaos where they finally ended up on a beach with a father carrying a son about to board a boat to embark on their journey to escape the violence. In the video, the narrator describes life before the war and the violence was peaceful. Olive trees blowing in the wind, the cool air and the sun in the morning at their farmhouse surrounded by livestock grazing in the fields with wildflowers. The crowded lively city with a mosque and a church where they would walk to the clock tower. The quote that stuck with me was when the narrator said: “But that life, that time, seems like a sham now, even to me, like some long dissolved rumor” (time maker 1:55). He means that those peaceful times and the beautiful landscape is hard for people to believe now when all they hear about now is war and bombings happening in their own city. Hardly anyone will believe that these places once had a beautiful thriving environment. From an external point of view, we only see one side of the story. We fail to see the other side of it.

People tend to misunderstand the experiences of immigrants. An American typically only looks at an immigrant’s situation externally rather than diving deeper to try and understand what goes on internally. We create a lot of assumptions about immigration based on one general story. We need to start thinking about immigration not as a simple topic, but as a complex of ideas and emotions. We have to learn from different people’s perspectives. By learning from the perspective of an immigrant, we can come together as people and understand how we can improve our system by learning about the experiences of immigrants.

Advanced Essay #1 - Exhausted

Posted by Ethan Chen in English 3 · Block · B Band on Friday, September 20, 2019 at 9:14 am

Introduction:

The goal for this essay is to talk about how it better to do a few extracurriculars than so many at once. I explain how it can be stressful, the negative effect of doing so many at once, and why it not easy to just stop doing an extracurricular. I am proud of linking two completely different descriptive scenes and finding a common theme to flesh it out into a bigger idea. What I want to improve for my writing process and technique for my next paper is to not overdo the descriptive language. I felt like I added too much unnecessary detail to describe what I am feeling and the setting around me. Also I felt like the transition from my scene to my big idea was unsmooth. I need to work out on a smooth transition

Advance Essay #1:

It was a cool Monday afternoon as I quickly walked up out of the ill-light subway station. I started my journey home from school. The gentle wind blows against my face as I walked down the street. I was alone with my calm, relaxing music while I thought about what I had to do to prepare for tomorrow. I sighed to myself as I realize how much I had to for school additionally with weekend homework I had.

I try to pace myself faster as I walk down the street but my legs felt tight and exhausted from practice. Spriting five laps around the school building took an enormous amount of energy. With the addition of frisbee practice in the morning, all I can think about was sleep. I slowly approach the front of my house, fumble around for my keys, and open the door.

I slowly stomped my way up the stairs and into my room. I threw my bookbag down as I collapsed onto my bed. The softness of my bed made my heart slowly beat now as I started to feel relaxed. I reach into my pocket to grab my phone. I started to play some chill, nice, quiet music. As the sound of music flows into my room. I lay in bed with my thoughts and slowly my eyes become heavy. My vision started to blur and darken and my hearing slowly faded away. There laying in bed, I fell asleep. It was the most relaxed I felt all day.

Ever since my junior year of high school has started, I’ve never been more excited to see my bed after school during my high school career. I am in cross country, students run practice and ultimate frisbee. With all of these activities, a regular day can range from 5:30 am - 6:30 pm. I never really minded the long days when I was in my freshman-sophomore year as the workload was pretty average. I believed I could keep this up for my whole high school career being involved with a lot of physical activities along with my education. I was pretty good at time management so I did not see it as an issue to me. I am a good student who rarely does badly in class after all. I decided to do the three sports.

As I got home from school, I was in my room and I started to reflect on an obvious problem I began to notice throughout the school year last year. My sleeping schedule was messed up. I had only gotten 5-6 hours of sleep every day. During benchmark season it is even less. Doing homework, concentrating, and listening to directions became harder and harder each day. I can recall a day when I almost fell asleep in class.

I remember it was late afternoon when I sat in history class learning about the different empires throughout history. Everyone was quiet and all eyes were on Mr.Todd as he gave his boring lecture about empires. I had a hard time paying attention. My eyes felt heavy as I tried to pay attention to Mr. Todd. I rolled my head around and shook it everytime my vision started to blur and my hearing began to fade away. All because of last night.

I was up all night working on my Algebra 2 benchmark. I was already exhausted coming home at 6 o’clock from physical activities. My desk was like a war zone, papers everywhere, scattered around. Directions for benchmarks and worksheets from all my classes covered my desk. On my computer, numerous tabs were open from google docs to my sources, to spreadsheets filled with numbers as I put in my final touches for my Algebra 2 benchmark. My head started to spin and I could feel the exhaustion taking over my body. It wasn’t until 12 that I decided to submit it and call it “my best work.” I lay on my bed and instantly fell asleep.

I began to realize that I had a clear problem. I realized that the overwhelming amount of stress and exhaustion were taking a toll on me physically and mentally. The lack of sleep I been having was affecting my performance in school. Although I was able to complete things on time without a problem, it negatively impacted me by being tired throughout the day. It caused me to miss things that were said in class and not pay attention much of what was going on. This also affected my social life. While being exhausted, I felt miserable and unhappy. This caused me to have mood swings. The littlest thing can bother me so much and make to get angry. I would often have short outbursts at home and even at school for unnecessary and silly reasons. The stress and exhaustion were getting in my way in having a successful and happy career in high school.

It was not only that stress and lack of sleep that brought me down, but me being oblivious to the fact that I think it ok I can manage three sports all at the same time. I love playing all three sports but you have to choose to do one at the end of the day. You have to understand that it is better for one or two things because you be able to commit to it and see the improvements as you continue to commit. If you do a bunch of things all at the same time, you will not be able to commit and do those things as well. An even bigger problem is that once you join all of these activists/sports, you feel pressure to continue to do it and not quit. Everyone in each of the activities and/or sports are counting on you and the role you play in. The idea of quitting makes everyone have a negative view on you. It feels like you have let everyone down and be label you as a quieter. Everyone gonna look down on you as if you are weak. It is important for people to understand that you have to make a wise choice and think ahead how much extracurriculars you can handle. Do not overwork yourself and it always better to do one or two extracurriculars than doing many extracurriculars. Knowing that you have to quit does not show a sign of weakness at all but knowing what you can manage and what you can not manage.

Lord Of The Flies Essay - Ethan Chen

What happens when you put two leaders with different ideologies in the same environment?

Imagine you are on an island trapped with a group of people and you have to rebuild a society on but you have two potential leaders fighting over different concepts of how to run this island. Well, in William Golding’s, Lord of the Flies, a group of boys survive a plane crash and they have to rebuild and recreate a society on a deserted island with no adult authority. As the book goes on, their society progressively turns from civilized to chaotic which ends in an all-out war for power between Jack and Ralph. The reader can see real-world examples from history where two leaders with totally different opinions rise up to power causing tension and resulting in an outbreak of violence.

North Korea and South Korea is a famous example of this. Both are well known for one of their most militarized and protected borders in the world. What once was a unified Korea living as one, whole country, fell into the split of North and South Korea. The Japanese had all control over Korea when they invaded in 1910, oppressing them and destroying their culture until the Japanese finally surrender during WW2. The Soviets started to take over Korea as well as the US had to make sure they did not take all of Korea. This was the chance for Korea to rebuild under a new government in which two people came into power, Kim II Sung and Syngman Rhee. The problem was, they had different ideas of how to run the country. In the article “Why North Korea and South Korea Are Separated” by Prableen Bajpai, she wrote about how the rise in power for the two leaders caused conflict as their political ideology differed about how to run the new era of Korea. Sung wanted a communist government while Rhee wanted a capitalist one. They both wanted to reunite Korea as a whole but the fight over which political idea is still being battelled out. This means that although the two emerging leaders wanted to agree on the objective to unite Korea as one nation again and rebuild their society after the Japanese conflict, they both had completely different views about how the government should be administered. This opposition created a lack of trust in each and the tensions between the two groups. Primarily, without an agreement from both parties of what to do, pressures from both sides can rise quickly which will ultimately lead to a call of action. Similar to the boys in Lord of the Flies, Ralph’s plans are challenged by Jack’s plans about what priorities should be set for their time on the island.

In the early days of the island, there were already disagreements of what their intentions on the island should be. Jack and Ralph had already started to have a controversy about their differences in ideas of how the island should be governed and what is essential to their survival. In this scene, Jack came back after he failed to catch a pig as Ralph and Simon were trying to assemble living quarters for the boys to live in. Ralph got frustrated in their progress on the shelters. “’I was talking about smoke! Don’t you want to be rescued? All you can talk about is pig, pig, pig!’ ‘But we want meat!’ ‘And I work all day with nothing but Simon and you come back and don’t even notice the huts’” (54). In this tense interaction, Ralph is arguing with Jack about how building shelters and creating a fire is essential to their goal of surviving. On the other hand, Jack thinks that hunting is more important as they need food to avoid starvation. This shows how two people who are rising to power can cause conflict as they believe in completely different methods of how the island should be run and what they should prioritize for their survival. Even though they are in the same environment going through the same situation, there would always be a disagreement of what to achieve and to accomplish. It caused tension between Ralph and Jack’s relationship with each other which in turn caused the lack of effectivity on the island and issues later down the line, which will resulted in a split between the group.

With the disagreement of who should run Korea (more like communism vs. capitalism,) the USSR and the USA relationship barely holding on, the communist North decided to attack the whole Korean peninsula. In “Korea: A History Of The North-South Split” by Tim Marshall, the Foreign Affairs Editor wrote that “In 1950 the North launched a surprise attack across the 38th parallel and quickly took most of the South. The United Nations then backed what it called a "police action" to repulse the advance and the Korean War, which would last for three years, had begun.” This shows how the situation could escalate when two completely different ideologies are put down on the table. This real-life connection happens to take a violent path with an unexpected attack to dominate the other side. With the method of violence, it supports the one leader display dominance to the people and dominates the other party. This also gives the party leverage of power over the everyday people they are leading. Similar to Lord of the Flies, Jack’s tribe decided to attack Ralph’s tribe so they could obtain the power of the fire which in this case, the fire is the essential thing that keeps both parties at power.

After Jack left Ralph’s tribe, he established a new group which was made up of mostly the biguns who left Ralph as they believed in Jack’s ideas. They both ran alongside one another separately for a while until Jack planned an ambush against Ralph. His tribe needed a way to roast the pig so they decided it was best to steal Piggy’s glasses from Ralph’s tribe. Knowing that the glasses means fire and fire is the symbol of power, they wanted to fight to get it. As night fell, things started to unravel. Jack tribe ambushed Ralph’s group and invaded their sheatler. “He was torn and jolted, found fingers in his mouth and bit them. A fist withdrew and came back like a piston so that the whole shelter exploded…’ That was Jack and his hunters’ said Ralph bitterly.’Why can’t they leave us alone?’” (167). This section from the text shows how an outbreak of violence finally occurs between the two rivals with completely different ideas of how to run the island. With two separate groups on the island who highly oppose each other, there will always be conflict between the two groups in order to dominate the other side and belittle them. With two leaders who have very distinct ideas from one other, there was bound to be an outbreak or clash between the two parties.

By connecting Lord of the Flies to the real-life event of the split of North and South Korea, it is seen how two individuals with highly opposing ideas interact and lead a group of people in the same circumstances. With two rising leaders with two different beliefs and no solid agreement from both sides, there would definitely be a split between the group of people supporting the leaders that their ideas line up with, causing very high tension between the two parties which could ultimately lead into conflict like violence. When you place two leaders with different beliefs and standards, there would be immediate dispute between the two groups that could lead to serious difficulty later on.

Oh no it you again

Posted by Ethan Chen in English 2 · Pahomov/Rhymer · D Band on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 6:54 pm

No one was home. I think my parents are out. The house is dark and empty. I want to go to my room onto my bed. Did someone say something? Oh no, you are back. Why? I should be happy and full of joy coming back home after hanging with friends. But all I felt was the sorrow and doubts. I should be coming home full of memorable events, but I am coming home full of grieve.

I just feel like my friends are not really friends. Yes I hang out with them, yes I laugh along with them, yes I have memories of them. But do they really feel the same for me? Do they really give me as much love as I give to them? Every day I come to school, I said hi but no hi in return. Only stone cold stares or a glance from their eyes. They just walk away from me or continue on with their conversation. Forgetting I was even there. Every time we hang out I am just in the back, listing to my friends just talking with each other behind my back. When I talk, my words get lost in theirs. My friends just slowly forget I was even there. You said that maybe they are all fake and they never really love me.

The girl? Well this girl. She in our friend group. Well I. I like her. I told her. I remember vividly that day when I told, she said let's just keep it as friends. But for these last few days, I’ve seen her sitting with one of my "friends". I was full of jealousy with my sorrow. Perhaps I was mistaken? Perhaps it was true that she like him more. Dam you are making me have the feeling of doubt again.

What is the meaning of life anymore? I feel lost in this world of hopelessness and loneliness. All I want is someone to sit down and talk to me, know that I am there and acknowledging me. At the very minimum, willing to listen to me. I do not have anyone to turn to and talk to. Everyone I once love is fading away. Sometimes I want to scream out loud. I just want someone to listen to me, talk to me, cry with me. Only you can hear me.

Every day I go to bed, I been having sleepless nights. Having deep thoughts like what the purpose of life? Where do I go? What the next step of life? I just feel directionless and lost in life. Each coming day I just feel scared and alone. I starting to lose patience feeling the frustration and angery with everyone. Because you taking control over me.

I have just been ignoring you all these years. No one will believe me, listen to me, that you are following me. Taunting me. Everywhere I go, you are always there. I want to end you, breaking free from you with a stab to the heart. But I have always been afraid to face you. You have been haunting me for so many years. Twice I face you with a knife, but I back down like a coward.

You know what? Today is the day. Come on where is it. There it is. The knife. I'm not afraid! IM NOT AFRAID

AAAAAAHHHHHH

I did it. I kill you. There the blood on the floor. My eyes are feeling heavy. This hurts a lot. Everything so blurry. But at least I kill you. You were my own thoughts, yes you made me suffer all these years, you were in my head. Talking over me. Bring me down. At least now, the world is a better place without me and you. At least now I am in a better place. I ended my suffering from the pain of you gave me. Because you were my thoughts inside my head.

Teamwork - Ethan Chen

Posted by Ethan Chen in English 2 · Pahomov/Rhymer · D Band on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 1:36 pm

The Frisbee Game

“Remember you are first cut, he second cut, I will call stack, and he will be swing.”

Hearing an actually formulated plan from my teammate woke me up as my mind was quickly losing focus. Right now we are tied with a score of 2-2. He was telling me the position I should be playing in the field. I will be the first man that the handler will attempt to pass the frisbee to. It was the last point before the end of the game and both teams were giving their all. We been chasing the frisbee disc up and down the field but no progress has been made. It was 5 minutes in the point, the longest point we had. My body already felt restless, legs heavy as bricks, my stomach growling, and my mouth dry begging for a drip water. My team always had a problem when it came to communicating with each other. We have always been unorganized, all over the place, no rules or positions had been in place. Our clueless faces on the field show that we did not even know what to do. We would always lose the games and it would be pure luck if we score a point. My coach would be on the side lines shaking his head in disappointment and I could see it was his turning point to make a change.

At our last practice, our coach wanted to talk about a essentiel concept called communication.

“It is one of the most key things when working as a team, not only for ultimate frisbee, but also with school work and other sports,” as he said putting emphasis to each word.

We spent that whole practice learning how to communicate with each other. We learn the commands and what each command means. We also learn how important eye contact and hand signals where useful in communicating with each other too. At the end of the practice, we were playing like a real team, a real ultimate frisbee game for once. We shouted commands at each other, made solid eye contact, and most importantly, work as a team. Just in time for the next game.

“Alright,” I said to my teammate.

We raise our fist and our opponent throw the frisbee out to the end of the field. We all ran down the field to get to our position’s.

“STACK ON ME,” as one of my teammates shouted out loud as I breathlessly ran down second to last in the stack.

The handler had picked up the disc. The defenders were all lined up to each one of us.

“DISC IN,” shouted the handler. The first cutter sprinted off to the open side. He was able to outrun his defender. The handler fake his defender (trick his defender by going in one direction then rapidly change to the other direction) and pass the frisbee to the first cutter.

“NEXT CUTTER WHO SECOND,” scream the first cutter.

I already ran down field so I sharply turn back towards where the first cutter was. Clap-clap-clap as I repeatedly clapped my hands to signal him that I was open. He threw the disc to me. I clap the disc with both hands and caught it. I look for an open person but my mind was under pressure and there was only confusion. The defender started to stall count me beginning from 10 as my sweat drip down my face.

Then from the corner of my eye, the handler waved his hand at me outrunning his defender. I turn around, eyes locked on him, and throw the frisbee at him. He caught the frisbee and signal the next cutter to go deep into the end zone. The deep cutter ran down and the handler huck the disc (Threw the disc far down the field). It travel far and fast down field. The deep cutter sprinted quickly down the field as his defender and others around him try to desperately catch up to him. The disc dip lower and lower and everyone ran faster and faster to the disc. The body of everyone from my team and the opponents team obscure my vision of the disc. There was a moment of tension to see if he caught it. A scream of joyness came out from my team. The deep cutter caught the disc! We won! We line up and shook hands with our opponents said, “good game good game.”

As I travel home, I realize how important communication is when it comes to teamwork. You can have a group of people no matter how many people are in, ranging from intelligence, backgrounds, if they like dogs or cats, etc. What most crucial out from teamwork is communication. When you communicate to your peers, you and your peers will understand what is the next step and who is playing what role. With that, you have organize the certain task to certain people to complete one objective. I had never taken that into consideration before and thought to myself, “I should try to apply that with other things in life,” as I approach to my front step, ready to begin a new day.

Ethan's Element Print

My element was Cadmium the atomic number 48.

Cadmium was first discovered by a German chemist name Friedrich Strohmeyer in 1817. He was studying calamine and when he heated it some of calamine glowed with a yellow color. He did more research and experiments when he determined that he found a new element. Cadmium can be found in Earth's Crust along with zinc so it mined out by humans. The problem with Cadmium is that it is very toxic to humans. Although Cadmium is toxic, it is still used in rechargeable batteries. Cadmium is used in alloys for bearings. Cadmium can be used for control rods for nuclear reactors. Cadmium can also be found in solder with silver.

When I started to do the print, I research about the what Cadmium is use for and the history behind it. When I find out what it does, it made three separate designs in my sketch book. One was batteries inside of a charging station because cadmium it is on of the uses in cadmium. Another design I had was a nuclear plant and then there is an inside view of the control role that have cadmium in it. My final design was drawing a alloy bearing and solder. I decided to do the the recharging station one because I felt like that was my best work out of the three. Then , I trace the drawing over the foam plate with pen. Finally, we got paint and I decided to try out all of the colors. The class we had, I pick out one of the three best prints out of the 8 prints I made. I measure what the matted out and glue the two prints onto my matt.

What I would want to change if I do this the second time was to try to press hader so there is no white spots on the parts where it should be fill with color. I also felt like I could improve the drawing like drawing the insides of a battery to show it charging. I enjoy printing it because it fun painting over your plate and seeing it being printed on paper.

Educating My Class About the Bystander Effect

Posted by Ethan Chen on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at 5:15 pm

For my first two posts, I discussed my past experience of being a victim of the bystander effect, and wanting to explore more about it. I learnt a lot of surprising information about why a person would not help defuse the situation and what makes a person a bystander. I learned that there are three main factors for a bystander effect to happen. The first is the amount of people around the situation. The more people around the situation, the least likely they would intervene. Second, is the idea of diffusion of responsibility. This relates to the second one where people will less likely take responsibility for helping out when there are others present. They think other people are responsible take action. Finally, the dominant person in the group can also play a huge role in the bystander effect. The so called “leader” of the group can choose to respond or not which can cause a chain reaction to his/her followers to also follow the leaders decision. I also learned about past experiments that is similar to the topic about the bystander effect like the Milgram Experiment and the Stanford Prison Experiment.  The Milgram Experiment focus on the obedience of a authority figure and personal conscience of the non-authority figure. This is similar to one of the factors of the bystander effect which is the dominant person. The Stanford Prison Experiment wanted to see the psychological effects of becoming a prisoner or prison guard. The results of the experiment were surprising because the situation caused the volunteers  to behave a certain way.

It is me presenting to my English class about my bystander effect

What I decided to do to spread awareness about the bystander effect to other people was to educate my English class about the bystander effect by making my very own presentation about bystanders. In my presentation, I started out with a question to the whole group asking if they knew what the bystander effect was. Only half of the class raise their hand to share their answer.  Then I started to tell them what the factors and causes are of the bystander effect. Then, I started to educate them about what they could do to overcome the bystander effect.

I recently started to research how everyday people can help overcome and how to avoid the bystander effect from happening. According to VeryWellMind, there are 7 ways that could help you overcome the Bystander Effect. They said that just looking at other people helping another person out can help inspire you to do the same. Being aware of what’s going on is important too because you have to know when someone is actually in need of help or if they are just playing around. Having a personal connection with someone from the crowd can help too. Just by looking them in the eye or talking to them can increase the chance of them helping you. You also need to see everyone as person who will need of help then excluding a certain type of people out. Finally, the way that is the most important one to overcome the Bystander Effect is to just jump and help. You might have everything planned out and know what is going on, but still be just standing there, just watching the events happen. The most important part is actually helping and taking action so just jump in and help.

After doing this project for two quarters, I learned a lot about the bystander effect. I went from having slight knowledge about it to having a deeper understanding. I feel like I helped contribute to something good and that I have done something for the community. What I feel like I could have done better is to not have been so nervous when presenting in front of people and also I wish I had practiced presenting. What is still left for me to do to make a change is spread the word out to even more people than just my class

Ethan - Negative Space

Posted by Ethan Chen in Art - Freshman · Hull · e2 Band on Friday, April 27, 2018 at 11:04 am
Negitive
Negitive
 A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the space around and between the main things in the drawing fro example by house, the fence, and the bush.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

How I found the engitive space is by looking at what is the main focus of the image which is the house, the fence, and the brush so the gray space behind it is the negative spacing.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

How this help an artist to see in negative spacing is the spacing around both the background and the main subject of the image.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?

Negative space does enhance the drawing cause you now can not just only see the main focus but also the background too.

The Interview with Dr. Galson about the Bystander Effect.

Posted by Ethan Chen in English 1 · Giknis · Y Band on Friday, March 16, 2018 at 4:58 pm

My first blog post was about the introduction to the bystander effect. My first experience of the bystander effect was when I got jumped in the streets and no one helped. I decided to go deeper about the issue with the bystander effect. I found out that bystander effect is cause by the amount of people present in the situation. The more people at the site of bullying, the more likely they won’t help. With less people in the situation, the most likely they would help. This is because they think another person will step in and help. Also, they don’t feel like it their responsibility to jump in and help. Finally, fear plays on the people because they don’t want to risk their life or be the next victim.

Some new information I have found since the last post is an experiment that have been done with 5 year old kids about the bystander effect. They are asked to color in a picture while there was an adult in the room painting a cardboard wall. The experiments were set up as the kid was alone with the painting adult, and another one where a couple of other kids painting with them who were confederates of the experimenter but were told not to say anything. In the finally one, they have the confederates kid be block by the cardboard but the non confederate kid can still see them which they call it the bystander unavailable situation. The adult would spill color water and the child would help them bring over paper towels. They found out that kids that were mostly alone help the adult while with other kids, only 50% of them helped. They discover the kids in the bystander unavailable situation still help although there were other kids there. This shows that the role of diffusion of responsibility is the problem and not social referencing

This photo shows a man on the ground but no one is helping because people think another person will respond and help out or they think of alternative things instead of believing he is in great danger.
For my original research, I interviewed SLA’s school psychologist Dr. Galson. What I learned from her is we tend to follow the culture norms of other people. She explained how if there is a single person observing, the one observer will most likely respond. When there is several people observing, each person responds depends on the other people if they respond too. People will step in to help if one person around them also step in and help. She really helped add my understand about our thinking process when we are in the group to decide whether or not to step up and help. She said it really depends on your relationship with those group of people. If we look up to the person who sets the culture norm is doing a certain thing we tend to follow what they do. But for a person who are not like the followers, they most likely able to step in and help. She also told me to look more into the milgram experiment which has to do something closely related to the bystander effect. What I am considering doing for my agent of change for now is to make posters and put them around the school. I don’t know what I will put on the poster, but I will take the time to think about it.

Bystander Effect

Posted by Ethan Chen in English 1 · Giknis · Y Band on Thursday, February 22, 2018 at 11:07 am

It was 2017 in the late afternoon. I was in 8th grade, it was the 3rd day of spring break. I was hanging out with some friends near my old school’s playground. We were all just chilling doing what kids normally do. Then all of the sudden, I see a gang of 16 kids attacking a kid. I didn't want stand there and watch a helpless kid get beaten up, so I intervened by telling them to stop. What happened next was a blur. I felt a sharp pain on the left side of my face. The world was spinning, everything was spinning, I felt more pain on my face and a group of people surrounding me. They were taking turn, swinging punches at me. When it felt like forever, they stopped and fled the scene. I was then escorted to my friend’s house, my face and shirt cover with stains of blood. After I was cleaned up, I realized that none of the other people around us helped, they just watched. I thought to myself: “Why were we the only ones helping the poor child? Why didn't they help out when we started to become the victim?” That when I became interested in the bystander effect. My goal is to learn why bystanders just watch something bad goes down when they can easily intervene to prevent something bad from happening. So I decided to investigate more about the bystanders effect in my “You & the World Project”.

This photo shows a bullying happening in front of these kids but they decided to go along with it and video tape it.

Many people have become victims to the bystanders effect each and everyday. Bullying happens in front of a crowd 88% of the time. Student do not like to see a bullying happen 90% of the time, but only 20% percent of the time people from that crowd actually take action to help stop it. Why is there only a low percentage of people help prevent bullying from happening, if almost everybody does not support what they see? Well for one thing, people fear of becoming the next victim. They don’t want the attacker targeting them and get harmed. Some bystanders actually join the bullying and making it worse. Some people would keep on encouraging it and with the digital age, we put it down on tape and posted it on social media.  People also think that it none of their business to engage and it not affecting them. People believe that they are powerless and have no idea what to do when trying to help someone out.

This graph (on slide 28) shows the percent of people who reacted to help assist someone when there an amount of people around them. As you can see, most people react when they are alone than others around them.

Bystanders can also be influenced by the number of people around the situation. People are more likely to intervene when there a few people to no one. But the more people their are, the less they are to intervene. When people don't react, other people think it is okay to do the same.

This line graph shows how the fewer the people around the person who needs aid, the more likely they will jump in and help them.

What I hope to learn as I dive deeper into this project is to understand what going on in the minds of bystanders. I want to interview people who have witness someone who needed aid but never did anything.  I want to know what they are thinking as they see this. I want to know why did they choose to either act or not act at all. Finally, I wanted to conduct a survey seeing how many people had recently been a bystander.

Party Like the Dead: Macbeth Creative Project

Posted by Ethan Chen in English 1 · Giknis · Y Band on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 at 12:08 pm
Macbeth project
Macbeth project
What we will be playing at the banquet:

Harry Potter - Double Trouble

  • We chose this song because the lyrics are practically verbatim to Act 4 Scene 1, where the witches give Macbeth new prophecies, and it shows how Macbeth is pretty evil.

The Lion King Soundtrack - I Just Can’t Wait to be King

  • We chose this song because Macbeth really wanted to become the King of Scotland after he heard the witches prediction of becoming King.

Michael Jackson- Ghost

  • We chose this song because in this scene, Banquo’s ghost appears. This song can foreshadow the appearance of the ghost.

Ballroom Party - Sleep No More

  • We chose this song because it relate to Macbeth’s sleep/sleep-no-more motif. It doesn’t exactly relate to this scene, but it is still a reoccuring theme.

Queen- I’m Going Slightly Mad

  • We chose this song because in this scene Macbeth hallucinates and sees the ghost of dead Banquo

Imagine Dragons- Thunder

  • We chose this song because this relates to the supernatural motif, and all of the scenes that are stormy

The O’Jays - Back Stabbers

  • We chose this song because it relates to Macbeth betraying his King in earlier scenes

The Eagles-  Witchy Woman

  • We chose this song because it is about the three witches, also following the supernatural theme

Mulan Soundtrack-  I’ll Make a Man out of You

  • We chose this song because it related to Lady Macbeth wanting to be “unsexed”, and when in this scene, Lady Macbeth is scolding Macbeth for going crazy at the party “Are you a man?”

The Radio Dept. - Strange Things Will Happen

  • We chose this song because strange things have been occurring ever since Macbeth was told he would be King. For example, Macbeth hallucinates a floating dagger, as well as the ghost of his dead friend.

Michaela and I wanted to do this project because we wanted to do something very creative. We decided to make an invitation because we got to choose songs to play, foods to serve, and a fun design. In the book, in Act 3 Scene 4, there is a feast to celebrate the crown of Macbeth. There, Banquo, a friend Macbeth killed, appears as a ghost. We chose do both a paper invitation and video invitation because we want to provide an invitation to all  generations. For the foods, we researched popular foods in the time period, as well as some things from the play, like roasted fowl and deviled eggs. For the songs, we chose songs that had to do with motifs from this scene, and the entire play.

New Slide Design - Ethan Chen

Posted by Ethan Chen in Technology - Freshman · Hull · e1 Band on Wednesday, December 6, 2017 at 5:30 pm
Slide Design
What I learn from the critique of my slide is to play around with the font type and more with the font size to help make the slide stand out more. What I also learn is to use a different color than blue to make it stand out a little more. The critique suggest that I should use the colors I already have in my visual which is red and light brown.
So I took the critiques and decided to change in my slide was the font type, the font color, and the position of the word “skrt skrt”. Why I made that change is because since there already two colors in the visual I have, I should take advantage with the color red in the car which also help make the word stand out from the light brown background. I change the font size because I feel like the font type Comic Sans MS makes it sort of looks good to me at least then the font I use before which was used for formal typing. I also Italic the font too to make the word looks like it moving fast with the car because it tilted to one side.
Finally I decided to change to position of the word to not only help make the words guide the eyes to the car but almost change the angle of the word to make it look like while the car was driving, it smash the words. How the research I did that help me create the slide is that it teaches me how to make the slide more memorable, visually appealing, and creative. Some of the sources I use to help woth my slide design is Presentation Zen, Elements of Art, Slide Design for Developers, and Wheel of Color (URL for wheel of color: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb263947(v=vs.85).aspx).

Ethan Chen Slide Design

Posted by Ethan Chen in Technology - Freshman · Hull · e1 Band on Friday, November 17, 2017 at 8:39 pm
Slide Design

So for my me magazine I talk a lot about my passion with cars especially drifting and rally driving. So what I decided to have in my slide design is to have a visual of a car drifting because The Presentation Zen stated that we humans notice compelling images and also we can easily remember visuals. What Presentation Zen also taught me is to have only one point because if you put too much information, the reader gets bored of reading it and just pass. Also the audience wouldn’t be able to remember it all in less than 5 seconds because there’s too many words and we humans can remember things visually better than reading. So I decided to keep it short, a way for the audience to remember, understand that I am a very passion about cars, and make is humorous. I decided to use the word skrt skrt because it a common slang term for cars that is drifting on the road which is a perfect thing on my slide. I also play with the moment of my two words. I decided to have the word follow that car path so I organize the font in a way to make the words lead up to the car. What I also play around with the words is the font size and the color. For size, I wanted to have like a sort of noise effect like the closer the word is to the car, the more loud it is which I demonstrated by increasing the size of the word near the car. Then vice versa for the word father away from the car because the sound is now softer. I wanted the word to stand out from the light brown dirt from my background image of the car so the reader can easily see the word and also have this contrast of warm and cool colors. While doing further research, I found about the wheel of color which was a helpful tool to help find the right colors. To make my text stand out from the light brown, I use complementary colors which are colors that are directly opposite from each other and are useful when you want to make colors stand out. So I use the wheel of colors to find out the complementary color of light brown which is light blue. Finally, the light brown is a warm color and the light blue is a cool color to make a good contrast.

Home Network - Ethan Chen

Posted by Ethan Chen in Technology - Freshman · Hull · e1 Band on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 at 9:06 am
This is my home network and my network provider is Comcast so a coax wire brings in the internet from the outside and connected to my modem the Motorola SURFboard SB6141. Then, a ethernet cable is connected to my router, the ASUS RT-N56U Gigabit Ethernet. As you can see, most of my devices in my house is connected wirelessly. All the three laptops, phones, tablets, and one chromecast stick is connected wirelessly in my home network. My dad’s desktop is connected wirelessly too because he have a wifi adapter to connect wirelessly without using a ethernet cable. Finally, my printer is connected with a USB cable onto my dad’s desktop. What I learn about networks is that you have to be aware about what are you sharing with other like thinking twice. I learn this from the OMG book when the girl send a whole powerpoint presentation of the sexuall things she did to her friends which their friends reshare it and it leak publicly. It ruin her life and the the other boys life so it taught me to think twice. Having a home network is basically a group of devices that is all connected to the router which the internet is brings in from a coax wire or a fiber wire depending on your provider to the modem.
