Chapter 1 (Isaac)

Isaac was 6 when his father died in the 50 gallon war. What was the fight over? 50 gallons of water. His mother also fought in the war, but she survived and went on to become a scientist. She became one of the world’s most respected scientists. It was 2078 and the population had drastically gone up. The world’s population clocked in at about 12 billion and resources were running thin quickly, especially water. Clean water has become so scarce that even the fishes must huddle in together and take short breaths to not take up all of the oxygen in the water because there is so little. Aside from America and Germany fighting over 50 gallons of water found in Japan, all countries are kind of tense. Gallons are never found randomly. They are harvested. And each country has a fair share based on their population. Japan harvested and hid fifty gallons in violation of their population. They had 450. They were only supposed to have 400. Even though many people hated the war, some loved it. Some felt like they needed it. It was a sort of population control. Many people were drafted. Although, the battle ended short when the two countries just decided to split it 25/25. Not as many people died, and it was a peaceful two years. Then the discovery of “Scrups” happened. And all humans were turning against each other so quick you would have thought they were enemies even before time.

Isaac was now 8 years old and he lived in a tiny house along with his mother. He shook the black hair from his face and he walked into the kitchen.

"Mami!"

"Que?"

"What are you eating?"

"Steak."

Isaac frowned, he knew that they were blessed with money but he wish she didn’t spend it on fresh food and eat it all. Both corners of her mouth scrunched up into a satisfied smile. Isaac had always heard "Eat healthy, you are what you eat ya know," from his abuela and he was always afraid his mom would turn into a steak. He never shared this fear with her because he didn't want to be labeled as a "dummy". She always called him that when she thought he made a stupid comment. His mother ate steak every night. Every morning. Every noon. And for snack, which was 6 times a day. And with each steak she ate, she drank a 8 ounce glass of orange juice and 2 ounces of water. Little Isaac walked up to his mother.

“Can I have some?”, his eyes went wide. “BUT ONLY A LITTLE BIT!”

His mother jumped back and her right eyebrow scrunched up, “Que te pasa?! Why the hell are you yelling?!”

Isaac apologized as his mother cut a small piece of steak. Her eyes were rimmed with dark purle, and the sea of wrinkled invaded her eyes, creating saggy bags. Despite his mom being exhausted, he loved her because she still took the time to talk to him. She flashed him a tired smile as she fixed him a small plate of steak. He was glad he only asked for a little bit, he didn’t want to turn into a steak.

“Lo siento, I forgot your fork!” Maribel stood up to run to the kitchen.

“No te preocupes, I’ll get it,” little Isaac got up to grab a fork. As he went to grab the iron handle to the wooden drawer, he bit on his lip so that he wouldn’t gasp as draw flew open as the handle pulled out straight towards his hands.

“Isaac? Are you okay?” his mother called. Worry was deep in her voice and she got up to move. Just then, Isaac came running through the door. Spoons, forks, and knives were flying through the air and they seemed to be chasing him. He ran back and forth, desperately trying to live when his mother brought a fist upon his cheek. Isaac blacked out, that’s all he remembered.

He woke up on a soft bed, screaming. He mother ran into his bedroom and held him down.

“Shhh! Shhh! Shhh! Ya cálmate!” she held his shoulders down as he panted.

“What do you mean calm down already?! Did you see that mommy?! Did you see that?!” he pointed everywhere, he quickly became paranoid as the metal candle holder on the brown wooden dresser started to shake. He screamed and his mom put her hand over his mouth.

“Shhh, the more calm you are, the less it happens. This was much easier when you were younger. I used to put medicine in your bottle just to calm you down,” she sat up on the bed and wiped the tears from his scared face.

“Your father, used to laugh. He believed that he had everything a man wanted. A wife, a beautiful child, a good paying job. He didn’t mind. We knew you were always special. Especially because his jacket buttons always stuck to your back. It was easy to peel them off of course. But it was funny to see the rainbow of colors on your back.” She giggled.

“You...you mean you knew I was a scrup?!” Isaac’s mouth twinged into a tight pout.

“A what?” her right eye brow scrunched up. Isaac knew that look, but he didn’t care.

“A screw up mom! A screw up!” he yelled, her temper came in quick and she slapped him so fast he didn’t even see the hand. Just heard a “whir” before he saw stars. She began to yell!

“You are NOT a screw up Isaac! You are beautiful and you are special!” she saw the tears in his eyes and she calmed down. She didn’t like hitting him, even for disciplinary reasons.

“We just, we just didn’t say anything because we thought we could keep it under control. We didn’t know what caused it at the time. We don’t know. But what we do know is, if people know then they will take you away from me.”

She began to cry, streams of tears dressed her delicate face and she no longer looked tired. Just devistated.

“I can’t have them take you away from me. I would die. I would just die. I wouldn’t know what to do!” She held on to Isaac and they cried together.

“W-w-what do I do mami?” he held on to her hand.

“I’ll show you,” she held up her right hand and a fork flew right into it. Isaac’s eyes went wide.

“WHOA! YOU HAVE IT TOO?” Isaac almost passed out. This was too much excitement for one day. He damn near fainted.

“Yes, come here. You can read well can’t you?” she pulled out a leather bound book. It was big, brown, and it had a metal lock on it.

“Yes ma’am,” he said proudly.

“I know you’re mature. I was waiting to give this to you, go in your room and read it,” she handed him the book. But he didn’t know the lock combination. It was a 7 slot lock and he didn’t know if he had to guess or what, and he flashed a worried look at his mother. She held out her right hand and the lock turned. The term “SOFRITO” came out and Isaac smiled. Only mami would do something like this.

“Mom, anyone whose spanish will know this! Can’t I change it?” he pouted.

“Yeah, here”, she held out her right hand again and made a fist. Something clicked and she rephrased the word into “ISAACYR”.

“There, your name and the first initial of your father’s last name and the first initials of my last name. Better?” she looked proud.

“Yes!” Isaac ran to his room and plopped on his bed. He opened the book, he appreciated the fact that his mom drew pictures for him to understand.

Chapter 2 (Maribel’s Diary)

Dear Isaac,

Hello, if you’re reading this, it means you’ve finally discovered that you are special. Like me. I might be retired now, and we’re probably living low because we are “special” and I need to teach you how to conceal your powers. Because if they are found, we will both be killed. Please read this, and learn a lot. This was from the studies that I did when I was still a scientist. Ok, here we go.

Basically, we are of the magnet origin. It is ancient, and it’s just ONE of the many origins that people can come from. Not everyone in the family has it. Just you, me, your grandma, and her father. Basically, we have the power to magnetize and demagnetize ourselves. But with magic, comes science. I’ve done some experiments on myself and I realized that the reason why you are of magnet origin is partly my fault. You know how I always eat steak and drink orange juice? Well, those are my favorite things to eat and drink. The issue is, we are already born with an iron imbalance in our bodies because we are basically human magnets. You know what else has iron? Steak. And do you know what an orange has? Vitamin C. Vitamin C helps the body absorb iron and I pretty much ate this while I was pregant with you. I’m so sorry Isaac, please forgive me for burdening you. ❤

Okay, here’s a simple diagram:

Okay honey, as you can see, we have a crap load of iron in us. Therefore, at will, we can become super magnetic. Here are things you need to know:

  1. Even if you want to panic, don’t. You will pull all of the metal to yourself or push it away.
  2. Befriend people of different origins. If you want, I can introduce you to some.
  3. Befriend people of similar origins. Here’s a chart of how they’re broken down.

Earth (metal)

Water (life)

Fire (offense)

Air (supports)

Magnetic (attracts metal)

Life (healers)

Electricity (Good at fighting, can summon electricity. Good for black outs)

Travelers (can fly/super speed)

Rockers (Manipulate Earth/Metal)

Aqua mages (can manipulate water)

Starters (People who can summon fire)

Pushers (Can maipulate air to create “natural” disasters)

Chameleons (once they touch the earth they can blend in)

Green thumbs (Can manipulate plants)

Melters (People who just have the abilities to heat up things)

Airlocks (Can summon air)

As people of the origins, our job is to simply keep the elements in balance and to keep the Earth safe from it’s people. We were supposed to live in peace. Now, for each origin there is a “mother” origin. The mother origins are the four elements. Earth, Water, Fire, and Air. And from these stem the “baby” origins. Such as us “Magnetics”. Now, where were weeeee oh yeah. How to magnetize! Here is a practice method:

  1. Sit in a calm, quiet room.
  2. Put a metallic object in front of you.
  3. Close your eyes.
  4. Breathe calmly in and out. In and out.
  5. Grab the fork. When you touch it, focus on the energy going back and forth into the fork.
  6. When you close your eyes, hold the fork in front of you. You will be able to see a bright blue outline of everything. Focus on the fork until all of it is light blue.
  7. Mentally tell it to push away.
  8. Let go.
  9. If it drops, you need to practice some more.
  10. Once you master that, you can mentally “demagnitize” yourself.
  11. Hold the fork until it’s blue again. Now, focus all the energy away until it’s faint blue again.
  12. Drop it.
  13. You won’t attract any metal unless you want to.
  14. What the hell are you waiting for? Go try it!

Isaac was excited. He jumped out of his bed and ran to the door and screamed when he saw his mom standing there with a fork.

“Here!” she threw the fork at him and he screamed and put his hands up. The metal flew to his hand.

“Okay, here’s one thing. As magnetics, we can only pull or push. There is no floating or suspending in the air. That’s what the Rockers are for. Now, try to pull that spoon over here. Remember the guide. Y por favor, no te grites.” she pouted.

“Okay I won’t scream,” He sat on the floor and closed his eyes. He breathed in and out. In and out. He could feel his body gathering energy and soon he could see the outline of every little thing in the room. He focused on the little spoon on the marble counter and soon it began to turn bright blue. He thought “COME” and in a flash he felt the spoon smack into his hand.

“Whoa I did it!” Isaac jumped up and down.

“Great, now, time to ea-,” she stopped in mid sentence. Isaac could see blood drip on the floor.

“MAMI!” he screamed to deaf ears. Dead ears. He saw her body fly to the ground and he held out his hand in panic. Her book flew to his hand as he backed in a corner and screamed. Tears flew to his face. He panicked, his body drenched in sweat and a little urine trickled. Four men in army uniforms started to walk towards him. The strongest one, the most muscular spoke up first.

“I don’t know Hank. He’s just a kid. Do we have to kill him? We could just collect him.”

The smallest one, who was supposedly the leader shot back:

“Orders were, annihilate any scrups. Shoot him.”

The men readied their guns and shot. Isaac screamed and put his hands up and all of a sudden the shots stopped. All he could he was four dead men who looked like bloody swiss cheese then he was whirred away. All he saw was a flash of his neighborhood and his house getting smaller and the next thing he knew he was in a room. He looked up and there was an African American kid.

“W-w-what are you DOING?” Isaac began to stand up but he fell again. He was dizzy.

“Calm down dude, that’s gonna happen. Hi. My name’s Connor and I like Star Wars. Everyone get’s dizzy when I drive them!” Connor was 8 years old at that time and full of energy.

“H-h-h-hi. My name’s Isaac. I’m a m-m-..,” Isaac couldn’t stop stuttering out of fear.

“Magnetic? Yeah. I know. We all know. You’re mom used to be one of the big guys.”, Connor stood Isaace up and supported him on his shoulder.

“We all?” Isaac looked around. They were in a little shack. Connor pulled open a wooden plank and there was a stair case. Connor led Isaac down.

“Common dude! This is so cool! You’ll get to meet my mom, Jennifer, and all my friends!”.

As they slowly walked down the dark, spiral stair case, Isaac began to whimper and cry.

“I-it’s okay! You don’t have to cry! Please don’t cry!” Connor tried his best to calm Isaac down but to no avail. The loss of his mother was too much to bare. He trudged down the stairs to a big ice door. It was frozen solid. White, frozen, solid.

Connor yelled out “Jennifer!” and the ice magically melted. A nine year old white girl was on the other side.

“Aw, why is he crying?” she pouted. Behind her, a quick “whir” and a tall slender black woman popped up in front of her.

“Connor what the hell were you THINKING?” she yelled at him as he hung his head.

“I was… I got Miss Maribel’s kid. She…,” little Connor didn’t even need to finish the sentence till his mother’s hard scowl softened.

“Oh, oh you poor baby!” she lifted Isaac in her arms and he let her. He cried on her shoulder and she held him tightly. He looked around with his tear-blurry eyes and sniffled. The room was white with blue lights. The carpet and the couches were white where as the tables and chairs were blue. There were people of all ages staring at him.

Miss Lana set him down. “Would ya like some water honey?”, Isaacs eyes went wide with surprise.

“You can have juice, but water is illegal to have! Who are you people?!.” Lana gave him a warm smile.

“We are you, and you’re one of us. Jennifer!”, Jenny came with an empty cup and drew her right hand up she pulled the moisture out of the air and poured it into the cup. The cup got frosty. She handed it to a now very thirsy Isaac. Miss Lana introduced them all.

“This is Jennifer. Her origin is Aqua Mage, Mother Origin is water. And this is Connor. He’s a traveler, as you know he can run really fast and he makes trouble. Listen, I’m really sorry about your mother… she meant a lot to everyone here as well.” Lana held on to his shoulder. Isaac looked up with red puffy eyes.

“Why did they kill my mom? We didn’t do anything!” tears were streaming down Isaac’s face. Lana picked him up gently and took him into a small white room, she closed the door behind her to shield them from staring eyes.

“The government sees her as a threat. They don’t like people like us. It’s just that, I’m scared for them.” she said, her eyes looked down with sorrow.

“Why?”

“Well. Have you ever heard of the term “You are your worst enemy?”” She scrunched her eye brows up.

“Yes! My mom used to say it all the time!”

“Well, they will destroy themselves eventually. But, it’s up to us to protect our people. SNS. Suspernatural Society.”

Isaac felt a sort of proudness. He quietly got up, walked to the door, opened it and looked out.

“Hi” he said, “I’m Isaac”.

Chapter 3 (2082)

Isaac was now ten, even 2 years later his mother’s death still affected him. He walked out of a medium red house. That’s where all of the members of the SNS stayed. He walked down the sidewalk to the corner of the 56 septa bus. As it arrived he read some graffiti on the side “No Scrups”. Isaac was scared, but he remembered what his mother said. Be careful, and breathe. He breathed and got on the bus. He sat near the door, that’s where he always felt safe. A strange old lady, wrinkled to the bone began to chant something. He couldn’t hear it until she started to speak up:

“No Scrups! No Scrups! No Scrups!”, by that point everyone in the bus decided to chime in, getting louder in unison.

“NO SCRUPS! NO SCRUPS! NOOOOOO SCRUUUUPS!”, Isaac was getting nervous. His palms were sweaty, his eye brows scrunched up, his face in a frown. He closed his fists and the bus stopped. People’s chants died down and gasps went all around. The old crone whispered:

“There’s a scrup in here...everyone off the bus!” everyone ran out of the doors. Scared. Nervous. Violent. The outside of the bus was crunched. People scattered in all directions, women, men, children, even the old wrinkled prune seemed to gain speed as if she were 30 years younger. Isaac ran down the street to Erie and Torresdale to catch the EL to school. He was happy to finally make it. After he got on his long ride, he hopped off at 13 street and took a trolley to 22nd. As he went up the stairs, he could hear the same chants. He walked in on a crowd who were protesting intergrated schools. He ran past them and went to greenfield. He was about ten minutes late as he slammed into the seat of his first class, sweaty, nervous. His teacher Miss Mara scolded him for being late. He tried to explain but she wouldn’t have it. She made him sit up front, and the school bully Johnathon threw spit balls at him. Isaac was young, but he was old enough to know what happens. When a fight is going on, the kid that is the most in trouble is the one that retaliates. Isaac looked at his teacher and pretended to pay attention, but he changed his focus. He instead, saw a dull blue light around his teacher, but he could feel the intensity of the metal desk behind him. Jonathon teetered back in his desk and Isaac made himself negative between himself and the desk, pushing it back. Johnathon began to cry as Isaac smiled. He ran his fingers through his hair, it was oily. He figured he could get Connor to rush him home and wash it real quick, but he changed his mind. Jennifer was in his class as well, as Jonathon fell, Jenny flashed Isaac a smile. She was trying so hard not to laugh. After a daunting 45 minutes, the bell rang and all of the kids ran out into the hallway for their next class.

“Hey!” Jennifer yelled as she ran up. “Happy Birthday!” she smiled.

“Wanna skip?” Isaac inquired. He was so tired. A friend of theirs, Harry ran up as well.

“You can count me in! Hey, did you guys hear?” Isaac and Jenny looked confused. Harry decided to elaborate. “They killed him! They took him away and they finally killed him!”

“Who?” Isaac was curious!

“That Scrup!” he pulled out his hollogram phone and showed him a picture of an Asian man. His hair was scruffy, but that face looked familiar. No. Isaac couldn’t and would not believe it. His dad died in the war. But this man looked so familiar. No. Isaac’s dad died in a war.

“D-d-didn’t he die in a war?” Isaac was in shock.

“Heck no! My mom told me they got him while the war was going on. He’s on a death sentence. But they finally killed him! Isn’t that great? Hung him in front of everyone! They said he was the laaaaaast one that they knew about. They killed his wife already. They’re just looking for the kid! Well, I gotta go!” and proud Harry ran away. Isaac laid himself upon the wall. Shaking.

“We have to go home!” and just then a “whir” came by and Connor was standing 2 inches from Isaac’s face.

“I can get you guys there!” and the “beep” of an announcement went on. They stopped to listen.

“Attention! Attention! News reports have stated that a SNS house was found and cleared out! Soldiers have eleminated the threats, along with their leader Lana Johnson!”.

Connor’s heart took no time to break. Connor grabbed Jennifer and Isaac tightly and ran with all of his might to the house. It was on fire. Wood and metal were everywhere and Jennifer held out her hands and frosted everyone’s skin.

“It helps. You won’t burn or even feel hot. My grandma taught me that”. All three of them slowly walked in.

“My father…. was alive.” Isaac whispered. Tears running down his face. He was sad, not only because he didn’t know his father. But because he heard what happened to prisoners through Harry as well. And from the bruises and lash marks that he witnessed in the picture, it didn’t look like he had it easy. Connor began to cry as well. He kneeled down and held a burnt black hand, he washed it in his never ending agony.

“Mama….” but alas, he had no time to mourn as five soldiers with masks and fire proof suits came in. They all held their guns and began to shoot. Isaac made himself negative and flew the bullets their way, killing all five.

“Connor! Take Jennifer and go!” Isaac pulled all the metal towards him. Jennifer screamed:

“No, we’re not leaving! We got to stick together. Remember?” she frowned, she had no parents and Connor and Isaac were like brothers to her. “REMEM-” and Connor whirred her away after giving Isaac a strong and lasting hug.

Chapter 4

Isaac was brought before a crowd in Ritten House. Whipped. Bloodied. Dirty. Skin black from the ash. Through his chewed up ears he could hear:

“NO SCRUPS! NO SCRUPS! NO SCRUPS!”

He could also hear a group of women who were upset:

“NO! He’s just a child! He’s just a child!”

They brought him onto a stage in front of everyone and through him over a cold wooden block. A big man with an axe came by and made a speech.

“Dear ladies, and gentlemen. These “Scrups” are nothing but trouble. They think they’re better than us, stronger, and more deserving of life just because they have powers. We have a child here. The child of the two leaders of SNS. Maribel Rodriguez and Ichiro Akiyama. The child of disgusting scum who didn’t deserve to walk the Earth.”

A lady yelled out “They were SOLDIERS. They FOUGHT for this COUNTRY! You are the real scum!”

The man simply replied with “Shut the hell up you prune. Bring her up here.” two soldiers dragged her up to the wooden block and slammed her down as well.

The man cleared his throat, “As I was saying, as humans, we are supposed to take care of this world. And today, we will make progress. Look at this boy and his scum follower! This is the enemy! This is what we must kill! They are the reason for sickness, global warming, the pain and agony that we endure every day! It’s ALL THEM!”

And with that, he brought down the axe. The head of the old woman ended up in the middle of the crowd and they all screamed a yell of joy as her blood sprayed on the grass.

“Goodbye devil child”, the man brought up his axe and-

A ten year old girl with brown curly hair closed the book. She ran out to the living room to her mother. Her father ran after her:

“Clara, CLARA! Give me that book! JENNIFER COME AND GET THIS GIRL!”. Clara’s mother softly got up from the couch.

“Connor what’s wrong now?” she inquired. She was tired.

“Did this really happen?” she breathed in and out. She never read something so scary. Her mother sat her upon her lap.

“No honey, of course not.” She rocked Clara back and forth until she fell asleep. She gave Clara to Connor and in 1 second Connor came back.

“You tucked her in and all?” Jennifer asked.

“Yes. Was one second too long for you?” and he tried to smile but it didn’t cheer Jennifer up.

“Where did she find that book Connor? I… I hid it away. I didn’t want to remember. I didn’t want to remember being in that crowd. Seeing Isaac… for God’s sake he was only ten Connor! Only ten! How many other children did they need to murder before they got their point across? Just for being a magnetic? For being a “scrup”? We even have to hide today Connor. When will they stop hating us?” Jennifer’s face became coated in tears.

“Just because he was a child, he had a hard time controlling it. Just because he was special. They killed him. Did they have to?” Jennifer mumbled.

Connor held her frail body and hummed until she calmed down.

“I know honey. I know. We just need to keep hiding. Ok? They can’t just tell if we have powers. We’ve had a nice life so far ok? And our baby was born normal. You don’t have to worry. Even if we were found out. I’ll protect you and Clara with all my life.”

Jennifer sniffled and she smiled. “Yeah, at least Clara is normal.”

It was just then she realized that Clara had just walked in. She was scared.

“Mommy?” tears were in her eyes. Her body was shaking. She jumped into her parents’ arms.

“Yes honey what’s wrong?” Jennifer began to sweat. Hoping her daughter didn’t hear the conversation. Her daughter held up her right hand, and a spoon began to float. Jenny’s eyes went wide with fear. She whispered:

“A r-r-rocker!” Jennifer exclaimed.

“M-m-mommy, some kids at school saw. My t-t-teacher knows”. Clara couldn’t stop stuttering. She wasn’t ignorant to the world. She knew.

Jennifer and Connor looked at each other as they heard a knock on the door. As Connor stood up to hold Clara and Jennifer to escape, the door flew inwards and broke open.

Instructions for Leaving Feeback

Posted by Larissa Pahomov in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Friday, March 21, 2014 at 12:48 pm

Get out your headphones! During class it is your job to watch at least four videos. WHen you are done, leave a comment and answer the following four questions for EACH PROJECT, in complete sentences:

1. Describe how you agree or disagree with their analysis. If you agree, add a few sentences extending their theory about their text. If you disagree, use the lens to produce an alternate analysis of their text.

2. Did this video push your thinking at all? Did it encourage you to look at the world in a new way? Explain why or why not.

3. What other book, film, movie, TV show, etc. does their project remind you of? How could you apply their analysis to this other text?

4. What shout-outs do you have for this group and their project?
Be the first to comment.

A flawless Lit Lens

Reflections

Molly:

I contributed in brainstorming general ideas for making our video. I also added my thoughts to our analysis on the feminist lens, how the song we chose relates to this lens; as well as helped without the storyboard. Lastly, I  recorded myself reading a paragraph from our analysis, which i'm the most proud of. I'm most proud of my contribution in recording for the video because I will usually do anything to not have to show myself in the video. No specific reason why I do this, but i'm proud I got over it.

Maggie

While working on this project I found that I was able to contribute with a fair amount of equality. I feel that I contributed most on the actual analysis. I was able to come up with good ways of looking at the video through the feminist lens especially. However, I am most proud of the work I contributed while we were brainstorming. Although our project didn’t have a particularly new or interesting theme I felt that I was more able to express ideas than I have been in the past. Our group worked well together and we found ways to use what we had.

Ray

I think my largest contribution to the project was suggesting the song, “Flawless.” Along with that, I was able to give creative ideas and write things such as the introduction and conclusion. An accomplishment I had was letting go of some control. Usually, I like to lead group projects, but I decided to not “take control” and let someone else do it. It turned out great because I saw some really amazing leadership skills from my project partners. My group worked well together; we had good communication and fair treatment.

Marcus

My biggest contribution to the project was creating a part and editing the video. It was a bit stressful and tedious since i ran into multiple errors and I had to recreate the flawless video since we could get the actual video anywhere. My accomplishment working within this group was sticking to the plan and making sure I always had something to do and staying busy even if it was hard to find work. We all worked so well together getting our parts done and turned in on time. We all communicated well and did what we all said we were going to do.

Literary Lenses Benchmark

Write Ups

Aateeyah:

By doing this project, I got a chance to reflect on the different lenses we learned in class while reading the Great Gatsby. It helped me understand all of the lens more by actually relating them to things that we watch everyday. Everyone in the group took part in each aspect that we had to do. From writing the script, to creating the storyboard, and recording, we all took part in it. But personally, I think I contributed a feeling of excitement and motivation. When recording, I couldn’t remember my line, but after a few tries, I got it.

Max:

This project was fun to do. Looking at common things in our lives through different lenses definitely changes my point of view. I’ve began looking at things through these lenses subconsciously. I think that Family Guy was a good choice to analyze for our project. I think the moment of collaboration I’m most proud of is the rap by Ronald. We had discussed this from the beginning of the project and finally got it filmed the day before the project was due. It took a lot of attempts to get the final shot and it was very relieving to finally have it done.

Warda:

I’m particularly proud of our final product in this benchmark. I contributed to analyzing what the Marxist Lens is in the show Family Guy. Another thing I did was putting the screenshots from our episodes we chosen. I also contributed to actually being part of the video and putting some of the script together.

The moment of collaboration that I am most proud of is when we decided as a group that we should have a rap in it. I felt like we collaborated on what we wanted to have in the video, which showed that we were talking as a group and not individually.

Ron:

For the quarter three benchmark, we all worked together as a group, analyzing our lenses that we learned while reading “The great gatsby”. Feminist lens that take us on a journey through the feminist aspect of different situations that can occur in real life, Also we touched upon the Marxist lens. I contributed with analyzing the feminist lens for our family guy scene when peter assumes Lois of being a prostitute, Also I wrote the ending spoken word of our movie to reflec all of the things that we've analyzed. Thinking about it now, looking through the world, media, and everything else does change my point of view and makes me thinks about the different shows, movies, and songs that I listen too. I enjoyed this project and I'm proud of the work that my group and I have accomplished during it.

Jian Zhang-

During this project, I was in charge of keeping things on task. Thankfully that wasn’t really needed since everyone was on task the whole time. I worked on many different bits of the project such as the research, data collection, edited here and there, discussions and some other things. Videos are the only thing I didn’t help much on since I have no idea what to do with them.

The part I am most proud of during this project was how well everyone worked together. Most of the time people just spend days arguing over things that doesn’t really matter or they just refuse to do much work. However this group got it’s stuff together on the first day and started laying down a reasonable and detailed plan. We followed the plan we made and worked things out in group discussions. Even when we do have disagreements, we solved them by talking with one another instead of just refusing their ideas. This made the project much easier then it could have been. With everyone pitching in to do the work, it was a very enjoyable experience.

- Pierce Luck

For this Project, I have contributed insightful thoughts and opinions into our group discussions analyzing American Apparel. I researched and found controversial ads, videos, commercials, and pictures that we used during our project. I was in charge of analyzing American Apparel using the Marxist lens with the help of my peers. I helped create the script for the Marxist portion of the project. I also did voiceovers, and was involved in the recording of the video, recording scenes for the feminist lens. The moment of collaboration that I am most proud was discussing the sexual appeal that the company sells. My Job as Secretary of the group kept our work in order, especially with our storyboard checkpoint.

Crystalle Hutchins:
I felt that I was a key part in helping all four members of my group collaborate effectively. I gave ideas and the group either agreed or tweaked them a bit with their own input. I, with the help of Nikki Adeli, wrote the script for each scene of our lenses. Once we recorded, I edited the video to make the final product.

I’m proud of how quickly my group recorded our scenes for the lenses. I think this showed how knowledgeable we were about the topic. It only took us one class period and we had time to spare. I loved how passionate my group was about the subject when researching. I knew that using American Apparel’s ads would engross our attention, making the project seem more enjoyable than a laborious task.

Nikki Adeli

When we first listed our strengths and weaknesses, I listed a weakness of mine to be time management. Therefore, going into the project, I not only wanted to be a great team member and collaborate with the group, but also work towards overcoming my weakness.

As a team member, I had multiple roles which I had managed nicely since I met my personal time goals that I had set for myself. I worked with Pierce to research the marxist lens and the application of Karl Marx’s thoughts to the American Apparel ads to make our analysis and video seem realistic. I also worked with Crystalle when writing the script to make the script as creative and unique as possible.

When it comes to collaboration, I had 2 great moments. The first was the researching in the beginning. We were all actively working towards a successful project and the work was equally separated. The second was when we were filming. None of us were absent in the moment, but very much present and working hard to create the best product we could.

In our English 3 class students, were asked to built and construct an entertaining yet informative video that takes any type of movie, show, article and or recorded/documented aspect of their surroundings of which they will help the viewer see in one or more of the following lens feminist, marxist, and new historicist.

By: Betty Louis, Liza Cohen, Timothy Ingram, and Emily Jenson.

Our Reflection:

Liza’s Write-Up:

The group and I worked really well together to finish this project on time and present it at it’s best quality. The group worked sufficiently by meeting our goals on time. By doing this, each member of the group put in a great deal of effort and contribution to the project. I, personally, liked playing the role of managing the group; making sure we were up to par with doing things on time and meeting the correct requirements. Before we starting to make our video, we took the proper amount of time to do some thorough brainstorming. Each day in class, I would raise ideas to the group before going through with them. This was important since the project was a team effort and I didn’t want to make decisions that my group didn’t agree with; without communicating with them first. Aside from that, I helped with the physical portion of the project; by organizing the video. The imovie wasn’t on my computer. Therefore, I used the work-time given to us in class by helping my group member with the video. I helped put slides together. While she put everything in the video, I organized it. So, I was contributing to the organization aspect of the movie. In general, I did the daily requirements of being in a group project by making sure I recorded my lines from the script every day and regularly asking my group members if they needed any extra assistance with any portions from the project.

A moment of collaboration that I am the most proud of is when the group and I would record our scenes for the movie. This made us get more enthusiastic with the project. Each time this happened, we got excited when it triggered us to get new ideas to make our video even better.

Betty Louis- Write Up

In this project I personally contributed my technology skills and ideas. In the beginning of this project I helped by suggesting clips of the movie that we chose. Once that was discussed and decided I helped with giving out websites and other ideas each group member could use in order to download the clips and the movie into our laptops. During this whole project I was the one that made sure everyone emailed me their recordings and I put them all together in one whole video. After that was done I checked in with my teammates and allowed them to see it in case there was anything that I missed. Once I got some feedback from them I made some minor changes,  exported the video from imovie and uploaded it. I am very proud at how well we all contributed to the project, collectively collaborated on our ideas, that we all were able to finish and turn in our benchmark right on time, and exceeded in following our goals. One moment that I’m really proud of is how in class we all suggested our ideas of how the flow of the video would be. Whenever there was an idea put on the table we would all think about it. If we all agreed on it we’d keep it, if it wasn’t we’d professionally talk about it and make some improvements on it.

Timothy’s Write-Up

These past two weeks my group and I worked real good to finish the final product for our quarter three english benchmark. We all took time to set out the rules and goals as a team and we all follow them to have a complete benchmark. In this project I personally contributed to giving out ideas on what should be done for the whole benchmark. I contributed with finding all the information on the lenses so as a group explain what the movie have to do with the different lenses. I contributed to recording my part and more to make an actually video for the final design based on the movie Taken. They last thing I could equally I contributed to was finding the right clips in the movie Taken to compare the lenses to the parts in throughout the movie. They moment of collaboration I am most proud is when we all came together to give out the ideas because we all gave out personal ideas on what we should do. Also I am most proud of that because we came to one final agreement without any arguments or disagreements on what video we could analyze into all the different lenses. At the end of the product I am happy because we all worked hard to complete this quarter three english benchmark and finish it as a group.

Emily

Over the past two weeks my group and I worked consistently to complete our quarter three benchmark. We worked well together, setting deadlines and goals. I helped chop up the movie in imovie and edited out what we needed. I wish I had been in class more and contributed more to this project, I really did not do as much as my groupmates. They were awesome and reminded me gently about things i needed to do and worked with me through the process. Overall i understand the lenses more now and even find myself subconsciously analyzing movies and tv everyday now.

Taming Of The Wedding Crashers

Posted by Marshall Woodruff in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at 1:09 pm

(Wedding Crashers, Taming Of The Shrew)

In the Shakespeare play “The Taming of the Shrew,” Lucentio and Hortensio and Tranio all dress up and pretend to be tutors so they can sneak into the Home of the fair Bianca and attempt to woo her, making the claim that there is need for deception on the male’s part in order to win the heart of a female. In the movie “Wedding Crashers” Two guys every year during wedding season, sneak into multiple weddings under false identities in order to get with the women at the weddings. Although they are different because these stories take place many centuries apart from one another. Plus Shakespeare’s story has the characters dress up so that they have a chance at marrying the girl, and Wedding crashers has the guys impersonate people just so they can have one night stands. However in one of the guys when he crashes a wedding, he falls in love with the maid of honor and complicates things. The movie makes the case that nothing has changed much since the time of Shakespeare and that deception is still a part that the male character has to play. In both eras, the woman has more power than the man and therefore the man has to use trickery to level the playing field.

Now shall my friend Petruchio do me grace,

And offer me disguised in sober robes

To old Baptista as a schoolmaster

Well seen in music, to instruct Bianca,

That so I may, by this device at least,

Have leave and leisure to make love to her

And, unsuspected, court her by herself.

(Act 1 Scene 2 Lines 103 - 109)

This quote from the book is when Hortensio decides to dress up as a schoolmaster so that he can get close enough to Bianca to court her and win her heart. This quote makes the statement that the male character has to play a bit of deception into the game in order to win the female. And in this book, this quote makes the statement that in the book the female has more power than the man because the female is being sought after and the man has to use trickery and deception in order to get her to notice him.

This type of behavior is shown in Wedding crashers too, because the two main characters have to impersonate people that they are not in order to get into weddings to meet girls. And since the weddings have a lot of people, the other people at the wedding assume that they are just members of the family. Such as when one person at a wedding thought that one of the crashers was “Sid’s kid Leonard, the diabetic.”

IMAGE GOES HERE

In this shot, the two main characters have walked up to the entrance and are now telling the people at the gate their false names, after that they let them in. This relates back to the taming of the shrew scene when the two people dressing up as schoolmasters are getting permission to teach Bianca under their false identities.

Why, gentlemen, you do me double wrong

To strive for that which resteth in my choice.

I am no breeching scholar in the schools.

I’ll not be tied to hours nor 'pointed times

But learn my lessons as I please myself.

And, to cut off all strife, here sit we down.

Act 3, Scene 1, Lines 16 - 21

This quote is from when the two suitors are disguised as school teachers and Bianca is telling them that she decides when they teach her and how. This quote is here to show that Bianca, the woman, is the one that retains the power in the courtship.

IMAGE GOES HERE

In this image one of the main characters that crashes weddings is seen here putting tears into his eyes so that he can cry on command when the girl he is after can see it. This is a technique that he uses to cheat, or level the playing field by playing with the girls emotions so she thinks that he is a great guy because he is crying at a wedding.

The conclusion that can be drawn from analysing both of these movies is the statement that attitudes of honesty and deception in relationships have not changed in the sense of the fact that people still tell stories about it. Stories still tell of guys who impersonate or take on false identities so that they can get close enough to women to try to court them. And in both cases where Lucentio and Hortensio try for Katherina, and in Wedding Crashers where the two guys crash weddings to meet girls, the women have the power in the first place. More than the men. And the men have to resort to trickery to get what they want. And they want it enough to be able to do take it to the extremes to get it.

Why Did the Shrews Get Married?

Posted by Jamira Carter in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Sunday, December 15, 2013 at 6:42 pm

Why Did The Shrews Get Married?

In Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew," A man named Baptista is searching for possible husbands for his two daughters but he has a rule; his eldest daughter must get married first, however, everyone wants the younger daughter, Bianca, because the oldest, Katherine, is a bad-tempered woman, known as a shrew. A man named Petruchio steps in to marry Baptista's Katherine, not for love, but for money. Once she is married Bianca is open to suitors . Throughout the book, Katherine and Petruchio's relationship is tracked as she becomes calmer and actually obeys her husband.

In the movie, " Why Did I Get Married?" , marriages are put to the test when honesty is missing from relationships and deception is present. There are four married couples who go on a retreat every year to strengthen their relationships with their spouse and one another. When first arriving to the retreat, the couples' stereotypical titles are revealed. There's the strong couple, the crazy/arguing couple, the "normal" couple, and the distant couple.

The couple most similar to Katherine and Petruchio's relationship is the crazy/arguing couple, Marcus and Angela. Angela is a shrew like Katherine, but she remains a shrew even after she's married. Marcus doesn't attempt to "tame" her as Petruchio does, for the simple matter of different time periods. All that Petruchio did to Katherine such as starving her is now illegal in America. Marcus on the other hand argues with Angela, only to let her get her way in the end. She whines and complains about her husband's baby mother, with whom he is still secretly sleeping with. If Petruchio cheated on Katherine, it wouldn't have been such a big deal. Katherine didn't love him initially in the marriage since she was forced into it , so she more than likely wouldn't have cared too much about his infidelity. Besides, in those times, a woman was supposed to obey her husband and that is what was mostly enforced, not vice versa.

Although times have changed, deception in marriages always play a role in how strong the relationship is.

"Marry me so I mean, sweet Katherine, in thy bed…. father hath consented that you shall be my wife, you dowry ‘greed on. and will you, nill you, I will marry you"

(Act 2, Scene 1, 82-86 )

Petruchio deceived his wife. Before they were married he attempted to make her believe he was in love with her, and that was his reasoning for marrying her. He actually wanted financial power from their marriage, not her. Still a shrew at the time, Katherine turned him away but her stubbornness was no match for his persistence. His persona was presented as loving and admiral, but that’s not Petruchio’s actual characteristics. He also made Katherine believe her father already consented their marriage, which turn her against her own father for a short period.

While Petruchio’s deception started before marriage, Marcus’ began after.

Like Petruchio, Marcus also deceives his wife by lying to her. He tells her she's crazy and is worried about nothing with his mistress. He encourages the two to get along for the sake of the kids, but little did Angela know Keisha (the baby mother)  was laughing in her face. Angela attempts to believe him ,but she had that “itch” that made her believe everything but what Marcus tells her. Similar to Katherine’s response to Petruchio’s lies, Angela snaps and crabs at Marcus, in an effort to be heard. The difference between Marcus and Petruchio is that Marcus lets it slide, while Petruchio is not afraid to put Katherine in her place of an obedient wife.

"PETRUCHIO: I say it is the moon that shines so bright.

KATHERINE: I know it is the sun that shines so bright

PETRUCHIO:  Say as he says, or we shall never go.

PETRUCHIO:I say it is the moon.

KATHERINE :I know it is the moon.”

(Act 4, Scene 5, line numbers)

As for Katherine, she deceived her husband into thinking he was right at all times. He tamed her to obey and respect him, but she was deceiving him to strengthen their marriage. Katherine knew her husband wouldn't stop forcing her to starve or sleep on the floor if she kept up with her horrible attitude towards him. What he said goes, so even when he was wrong, she would still tell him he was right.

Petruchio's "taming" process proved to be efficient, as Katherine obeys him over all of the other wives to their husbands. Shocked, everyone watches her come to him the second he summoned for her; when she came, she announced in front of everyone how her feelings for Petruchio changed and she's in love with her husband, that's why she's obedient to him. She understands her wifely duties now, and believes Petruchio's actions towards her were out of love. As far as deception in their marriage, they used it to strengthen their relationship, unlike Marcus and Angela. Petruchio's deceived Katherine into the marriage, but overall made her a better person. Katherine's newly obedient manner caused her to stand by her husband and do as he pleases, even if it's not necessarily right. In the end, they are a happy couple and their deception in their marriage positively affected them.

Petruchio and Katherine’s deceptive tactics had the purpose of strengthening their marriage, but it’s not the same for Angela and Marcus.

It isn't revealed that Angela was cheating until her and Marcus contracted  a sexual disease, and Angela admits she's already been treated for it. The two get into a physical altercation, but then settles their issues verbally. In this case, their deceiving was hurting their marriage as well as one another; their infidelity was done out of lust, not hatred. After putting all problems caused by deceiving on the table, they still decided to rekindle their marriage. Angela's shrew-like behavior is shortly paused as she shows her soft spot for her husband, admitting she only acts the way she does because she's scared to lose him. In order to be faithful to Angela, he demands his baby mother stops contacting him or visiting him unless it's for the sake of their child. She also talked about Angela in a degrading manner to the kids, which Marcus also demands for her to stop doing. With an attitude, his baby mother unwillingly agrees.

In Taming of the Shrew, the purpose of deception was to strengthen and  create a bond between two who didn’t have one prior to marriage. In the movie, “Why Did I Get Married?” , lust controlled the deception, and hurt the relationship more than anything. While many believe deception is a negative aspect, “Taming of the Shrew” proved otherwise. The portrayals in both the movie and play prove that the purpose behind actions is what is the deciding factor whether it is hurting or benefiting the marriage. As stated, while deception is often connected with negative actions, the purpose behind it could change the direction in what it does for the relationship.

Fairytale Endings.

Posted by Naihema Powell in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 3:11 pm

Boy meets girl. They fall in love. They live happily ever after. This has been the simple outline of peoples love lives since the beginning of mankind. They say that it takes two to be in a relationship, that the man and the women both dedicate an equal amount of time, and energy to make something work. In the early days, sexism and women rights was a big issue, they weren’t able to make decisions and choices for themselves and the male always seemed to have an upper hand on them and their lives. Today, in a completely time and era, we still see the old ways of men trying to dominate the female and their life choices.

In the Taming of the Shrew, a play written by William Shakespeare in the early 1590’s viewers come across the same story of the boy meets girl, they fall in love and live happily ever after, however, like many love stories, the boy is in complete control. Shakespeare starts the main story off with introducing two sisters, Katherine and Bianca. Bianca, who is described as sweet and kind with the potential to make a great wife has 2 suitors lined up for her, Hortensio and Gremio. Lucentio who comes into town to attend school, see’s Bianca and is immediately at a loss for words. Lucentio and his servant Tranio develop a grand plan to win Bianca. Lucentio dresses up and plays the role of a school master in order to get closer to Bianca, while his servant Tranio dresses up like him, and takes his place sweet talking Baptista, the father of the two girls, and going to school.  This here marks the beginning of a relationship based on deception. Lucentio went as far as impersonation, in order to win the heart of Bianca. Bianca met and fell in love with Lucentio, the school tutor. Not Lucentio all mighty and powerful, wealthy man from a privileged lifestyle. In the 1590’s when this play was being written, men had an upper hand over women. Females relied on their father to choose who they were to be wed too, and the husband after that point to provide for them. This type of behavior isn’t unusual for that time and era. However, even though time has evolved, people still seem to follow the outline of the old era.  Today, though times are very different, in romantic comedies viewers still see hidden traces of that male dominance. In a more recent movie called The Switch, starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman we see a different way the male uses and manipulates the females life. Both texts show how men feel like they have the upper hand in relationships and will doing anything to keep it that way.

In the movie, The Switch, Kassie our, female lead, is a middle aged women who is single and ready for a family. She decides she’s not going to find love so she sets out to find a sperm donor. Her best friend, Wally is against the entire thing, he doesn’t want to see her with another man let alone raising his kid. In an attempt to be supportive, Wally attends a party Kassie’s best friend throws the night she is inseminated. Throughout the course of the night, Wally somehow crosses paths with the sperm of Kassie’s donor. A drunk and heartbroken Wally then finds he an opportunity to sabotage Kassie’s pregnancy. Without thinking twice about it Wally destroys Rowland, Kassie’s donors, sperm and replace it with his own. At the point, Kassie’s future is written out for her. Her whole life and this moment is decided for her at the hands of a strong male character. Much like Taming of the Shrew, the female of the text doesn’t have a say in how her life turns out. The next day Wally doesn’t remember anything about the night, or replacing the sperm. The fact that the writers of The Switch made it so the male had no remembrance of doing the deed saves him from being the jealous asshole bad guy. Looking past that, we still see the same theme of the male in control of the women life, whether they are aware of it or not. In both texts the women of the book is still playing with the cards the male lead has delt out.

Old habits do in fact die hard, the modern day text and the older text seem to compare greatly. In the Taming of the Shrew, William Shakespear does not make any effort to cover up the fact that the women our powerless compared to the men. In Act 2 Scene 1, Baptista shows not shame nor remorse for auctioning off his youngest daughter, Bianca. Gremio suitor number one and Tranio a servant who is pretending to be suitor number two tells Baptista all they can and will offer his daughter if they are chosen to wed her. Bianca has absolutely no control over who her father picks. At the end of their speeches Baptista says, “Well, gentlemen, I am thus resolved: On Sunday next, you know my daughter Katherine is to be married. Now, on the sunday following, shall Bianca. Be bride to you, if you shall make this assurance. if not, to signior Gremio.”103. Baptista is promising his daughter off to Lucentio if his father will agree  to give the wealth and riches offered on Lucentio’s behalf. In that moment, with one short conversation Bianca’s whole life is written out and decided for her without her consent. The time and era this text was written in suggests that this is normal and appropriate behavior. However, nowadays, where women have rights and the ability to speak out and for themselves, this would have caused an uproar in the female society. The writers of the movie The Switch seem to give the male lead a lot of authority and power over the females life, however the way the go about it is subtle and hard to detect. In the movie, Wally is able to writes Kassie’s future for her, similar to the way Baptista does with Bianca.

Watching The Switch and reading Taming of the Shrew you see subtle similarities on how men have always and still do have the upper hand on females in relationships. Whether its a friendship relationship as the two main characters in The Switch or a romantic relationship like Bianca and her many suitors, evidence of the male dominance society grew up of it still present. Society is trying to move away from a time where women were completely powerless, however from the looks of things it seems like things finding a more hidden way to stay the same.

Long Lived Love

Posted by Marcus Burrell in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at 10:56 am

The taming of the shrew portrays that marriage is about control and the male has full control over the female and has to play the more dominant role in the relationship. Romance is nothing but a myth and love doesn’t exist within these relationships. Same as Tim Story’s “Think Like a Man.” Men have certain goals when it comes to relationships with women. In both of these cases, there is no such thing as love, it is only trick that helps someone get what he or she wants out of a relationship.

Think Like a Man was based upon a real book. The main focus of the movie is well, to act like a lady, but think like a man. It's to help women get inside the minds of men and understand what they want, but use that against them to really get what they want. Throughout the movie Cedric, Jeremy, Zeke, Dominic, and Michael all want simple things in life as a man and they are all just looking for that one woman who will please them and accept everything they want out of a relationship that they want. The women who end up with these men Mya, Kristen, Lauren and Candace are all looking for Mr. Right to finally come along after they all have been through pointless relationships. Encountering these men they feel as though this time they will finally find the right guy. There’s a new book that’s being talked about everywhere, but it was first premiered on Oprah’s show introduced by steve Harvey. He began to give insight on the operating system of a man’s brain to help women understand them and get what they want out of them. Throughout the movie the men and women experience ups and downs dealing with situations that are very relatable to today’s society based on love.

The very beginning of the movie Cedric (Kevin Hart) is narrating and talking about heterosexual relationships and how things were leading up to this current time. He began making comments about young boys and the stages they go through when it comes to women. When they're finally full grown men, a man has certain needs that need to be pleased sexually. He mentions how in the old times Women wanted marriage before anything. “Marriage was the only way to get sex.”

Act one Scene two

In “Taming of the Shrew” the men desires weren’t always to get sex, but in some cases it was to be wealthy, or wealthier. Petruchio was a wealthy man and wanted more money.  “I come to wive it wealthily in Padua; If wealthily, the happily in Padua.” SInce Katherine was wealthy, she was the perfect candidate to be Petruchio’s wife. The only way he could get what he wanted was to marry her.  In that time marriage was the Only  gateway To get what men wanted out of their women.

Another moment that happened towards the beginning of the movie, Domonic fell in love with Lauren who is a very wealthy woman and makes 6 figures and has a lot of stuff going for her already. Domonic on the other hand doesn't have much going for him, but he has dreams and aspirations that he wants for himself. Lauren does not know this until after she sleeps with him. She thought that since he chased her down in a jaguar sports car that it was his when he really was valet parking for another gentleman. She wants someone with money and success like her.

Act three scene one

In this scene Petruchio showed up to Kate and his wedding in rugged clothing expecting Kate to still marry him regardless of his looks. Looks aren’t everything his opinion. Everyone was so against his wearing and questioned his decision making. Biondello said to Petruchio, “Not as well apparelled as I wish you were.” This quote can be used in the viewpoint of Lauren. Dominic wasn’t well dressed enough for her. SHe want a man that was just as well dressed as her and Dominic wasn’t that man. Until she realized later on that he was. He may not have had the fancy clothes, but she knew he would in the end and even if he didn’t he was still a great man to be with.

Love is just a form of possession and that possession is never applied to anything. It’s a way to convince people in relationships that what they are doing to these people for their own selfish reasons are ok. Love is nothing, but a myth and in today’s society this has been a big issue not only for adults, but it’s for teens as well.

Cluelessly Tamed In The Name of Reputation

Posted by Crystalle Hutchins in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at 5:59 pm

Cluelessly Tamed In The Name of Reputation

A paper on the book “Taming of The Shrew” and movie “Clueless”.

Both the book “Taming of The Shrew” and movie “Clueless” show how relationships are used to represent power in specific societies. Katherine, the evil sister in “Taming of The Shrew”, was pressured to get married as soon as possible. She was viewed as overdue for marriage by traditional standards. Cher, the rich main character of Clueless, found it necessary to find a suitor of a respectable stature in order to not ruin her reputation. She later in the film influenced a new member of her society to do the same to save her from embarrassment. In the end, both Katherine and Cher found that engaging in romantic bonds for status did not leave them with a compatible partner. While Cher refuted her status relationships and found a mate more ideal, although not socially acceptable, Katherine was entwined by marriage. She had no choice but to compromise her feelings in order to conform to her society’s regulations. Engaging in romantic relationships with the purpose to maintain or gain power can leave one unsatisfied with their partner.

While Cher was being driven home from a party by her friend Elton, he began to come on to her. Cher found this disappointing and confusing since she had been making efforts to be matchmaker for Tai, the new girl in town, and Elton. Elton appeared to have responded well to these attempts, asking for the pictures of Tai that Cher had taken and helping to revive Tai when she passed out. But when Cher stated her assumption of his connection to her, Elton replied by saying that Cher and he made more sense together than he did with Tai. Finishing off his rant, he said, “Do you even know who my father is?!” He asks this rhetorical question because Cher knows his father is a famous producer. Cher tells him he is a snob for saying that he could not be with the new girl because he was wealthier than her.

Act 2, Scene 1, Lines 284-286

On page 83 of Taming of The Shrew, Petruchio makes the point that his wealth is prominent and asks what he can be assured if he marries Katherine. He is promised half of her father’s land and twenty thousand crowns once he is deceased. Petruchio says that for Katherine’s hand in marriage, she will receive all his lands and leases if her death succeeds his. Material possession played a role in the ability to create a romantic connection with someone. Later on when talking to Katherine, Petruchio informs her that she is indicted to marry him, whether she likes it or not. Hundreds of years ago, there was less choice and more force relating romantic connections compared to just a few decades ago.

Cher fell for a preppy exchange student, Christian. He asked to go a party with her and she agreed. When Christian comes to pick up Cher at her house, he meets her father. The protective man asks “Do you drink?” and Christian responds by saying “No thanks.” Cher’s father became annoyed because he did not like his sarcasm relating to her daughter’s safety while in a vehicle. He answers by saying “What’s wrong with you, kid? You think the death of Sammy Davis left an opening in the Rat Pack?” Cher’s dad did not care about the boy’s wealth, but rather his daughter’s safety.

“Call you me daughter? Now I promise you

You have showed a tender fatherly regard,

to wish me to one half lunatic, A madcap rufflian and a swearing Jack,

that thinks it oaths to face the matter out.”

Act 2, Scene 1, Lines 302-306

Compared to Cher’s father’s cautiousness, Katherine’s father seemed quite careless about his daughter’s well-being. After being told that she must marry the crazed Petruchio, Katharina expresses her disdain for her father’s choice of a husband. She felt Baptista betrayed her simply for a promised dowry.

As Cher began to take a stronger liking to Christian, she became tamed to his ambiguous behavior. The night that he came to watch movies at her house, Cher offered to make him coffee still he was tired. He replied by saying “Can’t, I got the ulcer.” But Cher questioned this statement by reminding he had cappuccinos in her presence in the past. He said “Oh, well, you know, that was like, foam…” Even though it was an absurd rebuttal, she did not dispute it.

“Forward, I pray, since we have come so far,

And be it the moon, or sun, or what you please.”

Act 4, Scene 5, Lines 14-15

As a tactic to tame his shrew, Petruchio made an attempt to convince Katherine that it was night when it was indisputably day. They bickered back and forth until Katharina finally accepted his inaccurate plea. She disregarded her own sense in order to please her husband. Cher did the same when faced with an illogic statement from Christian.

“Taming of The Shrew” exemplified the necessity of conformity to social hierarchies in ancient times. Marriage continues to be an avowal of one’s devotion to another person. However, there is more freedom when deciding who with which one will a commitment. In "Clueless",Cher chose her suitor freely, even if her father did not approve. Katharina was required to have consent from her father before becoming married. Both women had material wealth play a part with whom they were dedicated. This, in turn, forced them to make emotional compromises. When a relationship is built on status or possession, romantic satisfaction may be jeopardized.
