ACE Mentor Program ILP

Posted by Luis-Manuel Morales in Ilp - 10Th Grade - Menasion - Wed on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 1:35 pm

My ILP is with the ACE Mentor Program, and my group meets every two weeks to work on our project. We are working on a redesign of the Drexel Armory, not actually gutting the place out but creating all the blueprints and following the procedures that would take place before an actual construction project where to occur. It's very interesting seeing the process  and all the factors that go into redesigning, let alone constructing a new building. We have to take into consideration the amount of power is needed, the amount of air that is required, and the budget and schedule that is needed to make these things happen. Let alone all of the different people who are needed to make the plans people. It has been a great learning with professionals on how many of the things we don't pay attention too are so vital to our everyday lives and has opened my eyes to many great career paths that could be cool to explore.

During my time volunteering as a junior Counselor at Bridesburg Boys and Girls Club I found that getting to know the kids and Counselors and being able to fit in smoothly with everybody went very well. There was no period of awkwardness or negative attitudes from the kids. I'm looking forward to getting closer to the people there. I only volunteer on Wednesdays for a couple hours, every time I go back the next week it seems like starting over each time. I think making sure the children/campers learn from the camp and making sure they enjoy their time is important. If they have to stay in a place for a couple hours to wait for their parents I imagine that the time they spend should be joyous. I cannot wait to keep volunteering there, I not only get credits for it, but I enjoy working there.

My ILP

Posted by Madison Militello in Ilp - 10Th Grade - Menasion - Wed on Thursday, March 31, 2016 at 3:26 pm

My ILP is at Chosen 300, a soup kitchen located at 12th and Spring Garden. I visit every few weeks on either Wednesdays or Tuesdays. The dinner starts 8. I am not given the same job every time. Sometimes I hand out food, wash dishes, distribute drinks, etc. It has been a learning experience. It shows me the different types of people in the world and how I should treat them. I like this ILP for the learning experience, but I will probably change it soon or next year.

For my ILP i did a program with Philadelphia Theater Company. The program was a really good experience. I was able to perform on the same stage that so many awesome plays were performed on. I'm happy that I was able to have that experience and be able to write a story with a group of very creative people.

For my ILP, I go to this program called Ace Mentor Program every other Thursday. There, we learn about Engineering, Architectures, and Construction works. Right now we are designing a building for Drexel University. While designing the building, we are also learning about many things that will be useful in our future and now. We also get to know more about the stem careers, such as how the designing process works, and what designing tools people use.

For my ILP, I'm volunteering at my elementary/middle school. I have a teacher there that I love working with. She's teaching sixth grade there and usually I help her grade papers and do errands for her. For me, helping out my old school is like giving back to them. Sometimes I also get to see my other teachers and lend a helping hand to them so I enjoy going to my ILP every week.

So far in ILP, I am getting used to being a positive role model for the younger kids that I am around when at my old school. I am a big helper with a organization that is called “PlayWorks”. PlayWorks is an organization that sends PlayWork workers to different school throughout who helps with the active part of the children’s day. Letting the kids get a break from class and come outside and have fun. Play games, laugh, run around but most importantly learn how to do all that in a mature manner. Helping the kids play safe is the key. A lot of the children I work with look up to me since I’m older. They watch how I act and I see some even try to copy the things I do so I have to make sure I set a positive image for the younger kids to follow. Also, many of them remember me because I use to attend this school throughout K-8, also I have many family and friends that live around the neighborhood. It’s been a great experience volunteering at my old school and I look forward to go have fun with my old family at Kearny every Wednesday!

For my ILP I am volunteering at a local homeless kitchen, Chosen 300. I started volunteering at this kitchen while I was required to in middle school, I still receive the same fulfillment. Based on the day I either cook meals, serve meals, give out coats during clothing drives, or serve coffee/tea. While volunteering I get to meet many new people and interact one on one with the other side of Philadelphia I do not generally see. I think having this as my ILP was a great choice, it is definitely an activity I could upkeep in the future and also for college applications. Overall my ILP is an enriching experience that I feel betters me.

I am enjoying my ILP. The fact that I am able to work at my church is allowing me to accomplish many things. The first thing is that as I stated in my previous blog post my knowledge of Technology has increased. I have learned how to do things such as set up mics and control them all. The other main thing that I have been able to accomplish is that I have been able to became more active in my church. I have became a very active member and as of right now I will be baptized in the month of June. My ILP is a success and is continuing to be an amazing experience for me.

I had a great time and am still having a great time at my Ilp. It is a very interesting course considering that it has to do with law. I've always enjoyed having conversations about what is allow and what is not allowed in this country that won't break the law. In this course I get to discuss these things with my classmates and teachers and have a well thought out discussion. I enjoy my Ilp and am looking forward to finishing it off this year.
