The Cat in The Hat into a Horror Film

The Cat in The Hat, is a film based off of the book, that portrays the story of two children named Conrad and Sally spending their day with Cat in the Hat. This film is quite an enjoyment for children and exudes of fun and no rules or boundaries. The actor and costume of the Cat is a tad bit intimidating and has a terrifying of a face so we wanted to create a horror film trailer for it. Since the film came out in 2003, it already has an old fashioned aesthetic which is very convenient to turn into horror type elements for a trailer. The Cat in The Hat himself, looks very intimidating and his costume, facial expressions, and laugh doesn’t seem to be very “fun” to an age group as us so we used these elements along with multiple different shots in the trailer to make him look like he's the villain. Only one time did we use a filter on the Cat’s face, in the very beginning when introducing him, to make the frame look darker and which would make it fall under a horror film genre.

In the beginning of the trailer, it shows the landscape of a swing, swinging on it’s own, along with the production company title. This is sort of an introduction to the trailer already, automatically giving the audience horror film vibes. In the background there is dramatic music playing, an instrumental score, that is played throughout the trailer. Mainly when the Cat is chasing the children and when ruining their home. Most of the scenes are in color, accentuating the children’s book element but also showing how bright the kids are and how dark and twisted the Cat is. Black and white and dark tones are only used when Conrad goes into the closet and when introducing the Cat. This gives this sense of darkness, adding tension to what will happen next. The background music, gives the trailer some suspense.

We also included wording throughout the trailer, with the horror trailer theme that was provided from iMovie. This gives a horror movie vibe, making the audience to be at the edge of their seats, wondering what will happen next. During these times there was also non-diegetic very slight piano music playing, which is a continuous method used by many directors of horror films. Along with this, there was an establishment of the setting in the very beginning with close-up shot-reverse-shots of the town and the panning out of the kids, when they are left alone after their mother leaves, as well as the panning out and zooming in of the rain, the windowsill, and the exterior of their home.

When the Cat in the Hat was “torturing” the babysitter, this tremendous fast non-diegetic orchestral music was added to show that he is out of his mind. This music was also used towards the end when displaying the treacherous acts of the Cat, such as him pulling out needles and knives. The specific scenes that we used were ones that we thought would be suitable for a horror film including ones of the Cat’s companions, Thing 1 and Thing 2 violently attacking the babysitter. The Cat’s facial expressions and looks are already frightening in many scenes and we purposely put suspenseful music at those times. One scene was when the Cat was going down the stairs, we chose this scene because it demonstrated a low angle showing that he was superior than the kids.

Many of the shots of the kids are selected medium and close up shots to demonstrate facial expressions and actions of Conrad and Sally to prove that the Cat can be scary. This includes scenes of them screaming, the high angle shot of them going up the stairs when first encountering him, the high angle shot of Sally looking up at Thing 2 on the ceiling, and when the Cat/Thing 1 and 2 were ruining their home. The buildup to when they first saw the Cat was made to be suspenseful, which is why it is a lengthy 30 second scene of Conrad slowly opening the closet door and then suddenly snatched inside. This was kept without music because it contributed to the quiet element and sudden boom in the end in a horror genre.

In conclusion, we hope that you enjoyed our twist of The Cat in The Hat as a horror film. We put together many different cinematic and theatrical aspects to help us achieve our goal. Enjoy! :)

My capstone project is about how a sickness or illness could affect the whole family when one family member has it. I got to work with some family members at the Ronald McDonald House(RMDH) and see how they interacted with me and their surroundings. Volunteering at the nonprofit charity, gave me a feeling on what their community is like. To get to interact with them, I decided to do arts and crafts with them, while Tatiana Ream, played bingo with the kids. Through a fundraiser that we did, I bought a set of 8x10 canvases, paint brushes, and acrylic paint and Tatiana boughts items to make gift bags for them. Even though it did not go as expected, with only two kids showing up, I decided to use the rest of the material to  give back to my community church.

Sometimes the families have to sacrifice a lot of their daily schedules to care for the patient. Their work schedules and leisure activities can get affected because they need to give more time to care, support and take the patient to the doctors. It also points out that an illness in the family can affect the health and happiness of the family members. This source talks a lot about the different illness that might happen at certain ages and how caregivers take part in the equation. Since some families have caregivers, they are also getting affected. They might not have a good health status but it gives the family a little rest. The sourcing is saying that there are more things other than the family itself that’s getting affected when someone in the family has an illness.

Edwards, Ben, and Valerie Clarke. "The psychological impact of a cancer diagnosis on families: The influence of family functioning and patients' illness characteristics on depression and anxiety." Psycho‐Oncology. December 02, 2003. Accessed January 25, 2018. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/pon.773/full.
If a family member is diagnosed with cancer, the people around them can suffer from clinical levels of depression, severe levels of anxiety, and stress. The characteristics of the patient and how the family function have a big impact on the family’s depression and anxiety. It also depends on how the family tackle the illness. If they’re positive, meaning that they act openly, they express their feelings and solve problems effectively, they will have a lower level of depression. To have lower levels of anxiety, the family needs to communicate with one another. Researchers and doctors need to be more family-focused because if the patient and the people around them doesn’t have the same mentality, it will have a negative outcome for them all.

Golics, Catherine Jane, Mohammad Khurshid Azam Basra, M. Sam Salek, and Andrew Yule Finlay. "The impact of patients' chronic disease on family quality of life: an experience from 26 specialties." International Journal of General Medicine. September 18, 2013. Accessed January 24, 2018. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3787893/.
Learning a little about the experiment that was conducted, it proved that different illness have different effects on the family. It said that the physical effects, psychological distress and social problems quality in the life of the family can be reduced. Since the family members have a critical part in caring for the patient, they need to be prepared too. The emotional impact, financial aspects, social life, time commitments, personal relationships, and family activities are the most common to be affect in all of the chronic diseases. The studies described in this source is similar to what I want to do, they asked the people in the interview, “Can you tell me about any ways your life has been affected by your family member’s illness?” That is similar to my essential question, so this will be beneficial to me later on.

Good, Byron J., Mary-Jo DelVecchio Good, and Bill D. Burr. "Impact of Illness on the Family: Disease, Illness, and the Family Illness Trajectory." SpringerLink. January 01, 1983. Accessed January 25, 2018. https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-1-4612-5433-1_6.
According to this source, for a physician to treat a patient, they need to acknowledge the psychological problems of both the patient and the family of the patient. It needs to be recognized, diagnosed and addressed to successfully treat the patient. A study showed that more than half of the families with children that had cystic fibrotic experienced growth and returned back to stability. It is important to support the patients because to share the burden and try to stay positive has a big impact on the family. At times when a family member has an illness, it will most likely bring the family closer because they’ll find strength within themselves.

"How Chronic Illness or Disability Affects a Family." HealthyChildren.org. Accessed January 26, 2018. https://www.healthychildren.org/English/health-issues/conditions/chronic/Pages/How%20Chronic-Illness-Affects-the-Family.aspx.
The parents and caregivers are placed with a big responsibility. They have to worry about their own health and fears and also carry the health condition of the patient. There are different ways that can help with the situation. For example, physicians, social workers, therapists, etc., can be a big help. Trying to solve all family problems associated to the illness or condition can end up isolating yourself from others. It’s okay to recieve help from others when it gets too much. Social networking is also a helpful thing because it allows the family to surround themselves with a supportive environment.

"Impact of illness on the family." EuroMed Info. Accessed January 24, 2018. https://www.euromedinfo.eu/impact-of-illness-on-the-family.html/.
This source answers my essential question. It states that the lifestyle of the family are affected when a family member becomes ill. Everyone has to adapt to a new change because they have to take into account that they should function the way that’s best for the patient. Some families might even need counseling depending on what specific role they should play a part of the family’s function. The source also talks about how the extended family might be affected by the seriousness of the illness. It said that some illness might bring families closer but some might be a strain, so it’s important to identify the illness to the whole family.

"Individuals and Families: Models and Interventions." Health and Behavior: The Interplay of Biological, Behavioral, and Societal Influences. January 01, 1970. Accessed January 26, 2018. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK43749/.
This source proves that if someone has an illness in the family, it will lead to a long-term stressor for both the patient and the family. To help with the emotional ride of having an illness within the family is to secure and support personal relationships with one another. Behavior also plays a big part because to have a stable, secure, and mutual family relationships helps enhance consistent disease management. It helps the family share the burden associated with the illness so that they will have each other to rely on. It also talks about how behavior plays a big part in other aspects of life.

The first line of healthcare that a person with chronic illness has is their family. The families are the ones that are there with them everyday and the one who do whatever it takes to help the patient. The chronic illness of one family member influences the lives of everyone around them. Their everyday lives change to find a way to help their loved ones. They might not be emotionally stable because it will be hard for them to adjust to a different lifestyle. The families might need help from trained professional for support, but they will always try their hardest to live a “normal” life.

Reichman, Nancy E., Hope Corman, and Kelly Noonan. "Impact of Child Disability on the Family ." Medscape Log In. Accessed January 25, 2018. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/581577_2.
There are pros and cons about having a child or a sibling that needs medical attention. It can bring out everyone’s inner strength, enhance family cohesion, and it encourage connections to the community around them. However, it takes a lot of time, financial costs, physical and emotional demands, and support. People might have higher stress levels due to the different effects that come with the responsibility of caring a disabled child. Most of the time, the mom stays at home and the dad’s work hour decreases. Parents that have a disabled child are found to be less social and they are less likely to have large families.

Rusk, Howard A., and Joseph Novey. Marriage and family living; international issue on the family. Chicago, 1954.
The chapter, “The Impact of Chronic Illness on Families,” it said that chronic illness contributes to family problems. Whether the illness is a something small, it will still affect the family because everyone is aware of it. The financial and emotional aspects of the family is the primary points that the illness will affect. The family’s social life will be affected due to the things that the patient need. Depending on the severity of the illness, it affects how the family function as an individual and as a whole. What they need to do and how they respond to things will be determined by the illness.

More than letters and numbers

Posted by Athalia Tan in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 12:22 am

What right does a person have to judge others? Who is to say that they’re smarter than others? Many students say that they’re smarter than him or her, but what defines intelligence? According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, intelligence means “the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one's environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria (such as tests).” Nowadays, people are considered smart due to their scores and grades in school. If they get one of the higher grades in the class, people will automatically assume that he or she is smart or intelligent. However, scores and grades do not define the intelligence of a student because of different criteria.

There was a survey done at Costa Mesa High School, California in 2014 about grades reflecting intelligence. The authors, Catherine Kricorian and Jeirany Chavez, said “For every class, the teacher sets up a system to ‘weigh’ the importance of tests, homework, participation, etc., and the combination of all of these aspects create a grade.” Meaning that grades doesn’t only come from the intelligence of a student but also from how the teacher aspects the student to be. Different teachers have different standards and rules in which they want the students to follow. Some teachers grade on effort, dedication, etc., so not all grades and scores are based on full intelligence or knowledge. It’s true that every teacher grades differently because they all have different rubrics that they go off of. Even though it might have the same categories, each category might have different description on meeting the expectations.

Similarly, there was a website that had people’s response to the question, “Do grades reflect intelligence.” On this web page, people vote either yes or no and also wrote their reason behind why they chose their answer. A post from mexicanmhitman said, “One can be lazy and not do their schoolwork. Millions of people in the world are intelligent, yet we choose not to do work. I don't do my classwork frequently, yet my test grades are higher than your average grades. I never hand in homework, but I have never gotten lower than an A in quizzes.” Another post by a user name, luvlee37 says, “Grades are usually based on a limited testing arena, which is usually a pen and paper test and does not take into consideration the student's frame 0f mind while writing the exam.  A three hour written test has its own limits and cannot judge a child's true calibre as such.” Those two comments is simply stating that grades and scores are from tests. The first comment is saying that many people might be smart but lazy, that can give them a “bad grade” because they’re lazy to do what the teacher is telling them to do. Meanwhile, in the second comment, that person is saying that grades are only based on tests, using a pen and paper. It’s also saying that tests aren’t enough to judge a student’s intelligence because there’s a limit of how much a person can take a test for so long.

Therefore, grades are mostly an overall score of all of the work that’s given to the students. Even though they tell a little of how much a student know, grades does not fully define the intelligence of a student. There are many different factors that make up a good grade, so it’s not only the intelligence of a student. The intelligence of a student is defined from what they understand as an individual not because of a grade. Students’ are more than just letters and numbers.

This is the best 2fer I've written because I learned from my mistakes. Hopefully, I

didn't make the same mistakes again, but I think that I covered it. I used factual

information from people, so that I can prove my thesis more. Using actual information

will make the reader see my point of view and why I wrote my thesis.

Children's Voice

Play: The Taming of the Shrew

Movie: Blended

The movie Blended and the book The Taming of the Shrew share common themes on love and romance. Although they are made hundreds of years apart, they share a common ground. The movie Blended, is about two single parents getting together with the help of their children, even though at first they didn’t approve of it. In the book, Shrew, there was a father who wanted to give his daughters in marriage to the suitors that seeked them. Both the movie and the book revolves around the family’s interference on courtship. In the book, the father had was involved, but in the movie the children were involved. Therefore, in the 21st century, kids are allowed to interfere or have a say in their parent’s relationships just like how parents were interfering with their children's relationships.

“Baptista:

Gentlemen, importune me no farther,

For how I firmly am resolv'd you know;

That is, not to bestow my youngest daughter

Before I have a husband for the elder.

If either of you both love Katherina,

Because I know you well and love you well,

Leave shall you have to court her at your pleasure.”

(Act 1, Scene 1, lines 48-54)

In the book, there were many suitors who wanted the second daughter of Baptista, Bianca, because his first, Katherine, has a nasty attitude. However, Baptista said that he wants Kate to marry first and then Bianca. However, in the movie Blended, the kids has the say whether or not they approve of their parent’s new partner or not.

(0:28:10)

In this particular scene, Lauren’s sons shows that they don’t like Jim. Her oldest son, Brendan, called his mom a liar and stormed off after he thinks that his mom likes Jim. Since Lauren was a single mom, she’s been trying to see if she can date other guys. However, her boys doesn’t approve because from time to time, they still contact their father.  Like in the Shrew, Baptista doesn’t approve of Bianca’s suitors because he hasn’t given away his first daughter. Similarly, both situations had a wall that they need to go over before they can approve. In the movie, the boys weren’t over their dad and in the book, Baptista still needs to wed his first daughter. This shows a lot of how children interfered with their parent’s relationship and it’s just considered normal. After the little dispute, when Brendan stormed off, Lauren knew that he was mad and just let him be. While in the Shrew, Baptista was the one who had a say in everything because he’s the father.

“ Baptista:

I know not what to say; but give me your hands.

God send you joy, Petruchio! 'Tis a match.” 2.1. 327-328

(Act 2, Scene 1, lines 327-328)

In Act 2 of the Shrew, Petruchio is willing to marry Kate for wealth. He knew that Kate isn’t wanted by many so he wants to make a deal with Baptista for wealth. Petruchio convinced him with the idea that he actually wants Kate because of her beauty and personality, when in reality he was just needy for money. On the contrary, in Blended, the two families coincidentally met at a family bonding retreat in Africa that made the kids realize how much of they need the other parent.

Screenshot 2017-04-21 at 1.25.32 AM.png

(1:24:11)

In the scene above, Lauren’s boys, Brendan and Tyler, were in bed talking about how their day went with Jim. Since their dad didn’t really have much time for them, when Jim was there to teach them some sports, they enjoyed it. In comparison to the Shrew, both families goals were to just have fun on the trip and not worry about each other. But, since Jim’s daughters were in need of a mother figure in their life and Lauren’s sons were in need of a father figure in theirs, they were in need of each other. Those examples shows that children  can interfering with the parent’s relationships because they can have a major impact on how the parent think about the other person. In that specific scene, Lauren said that it was nice of Jim to help her sons hit the ball and boxing which can lead to have other feelings. On the other hand, a couple of hundred years ago, the dad was the only one who had the say in giving away his daughter in marriage. The dad, Baptista, was the only one who gets to marry his daughters.

According to both the movie Blended and the book Shrew, society’s  view towards love has changed over hundreds of years. The movie Blended was made in 2014 and it shows the involvement or interference children can have on courtship and dating. Despite the fact that the book Shrew was made in 1594, only the father, Baptista, interfered in the courtship and dating of his daughters during that time. Therefore, as time passed, kids now have a say in their parent’s relationships without it being considered rude.

Movements of Life

Posted by Athalia Tan in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Sunday, January 8, 2017 at 11:52 pm

I was in a different place now, a world where I have to start doing things on my own. The first day of high school was something I looked forward to. I was scared  yet I was happy. This is the beginning of a new chapter in my life that I get to enjoy. As I walked from the Broad Street Line subway to the trolley, my heart raced. I only have two stops till I get to my new school and as I got closer to 22nd and Market, my heart beats faster. I walked out of the trolley stop and turned the corner of 22nd and Market. There were students everywhere, the strangers that I will have to see throughout my high school life. As I entered the front doors of the school I signed in and looked around, confused on where to go. But, thankfully I received an email about a week or so before school started, telling me where I can find my advisory. This was the fall of 2014, my freshmen year of highschool, the start of the “best years of my life,” said everyone I knew.

But now, here I am in my junior year, the winter of 2016, coming to an end, moving to 2017.Junior year, the “most important year,” just like 7th grade, because this is the year that can lead me to  my future education. Thinking about college brings back all of the times when I moved into a new environment. The past two and a half years of high school has been a thrill but here I am, about to start into the stages of finding a new place to learn. My school have been discussing about colleges; having junior college night, letting us talk to some of the representatives from different colleges and taking us to college fairs. I wonder at times, will there ever be a time where I’ll stop changing environments? Moving to highschool and now thinking about moving to college isn’t the only time that I’ve experienced a change in my life.

Being a six year old, just graduated out of kindergarten, knowing that I have to move to the US and going to first grade there, terrified me. But, my parents took our family to go vacation before we left. When I got here, I cried for weeks when I first moved and told my parents that I wanted to go back home and that I didn’t want to be here. I cried every night, knowing that it was useless to ask to go home. The summer of 2006, was one of the worse summers of my life. My eyes got puffy every night, my face was red as a tomato, six year old me didn’t have any power but to cry and ask to be taken back home. Restless, sleeping on a wet pillow, I flipped the pillow over, not realizing that I’ve already flipped it before, so I turned the pillow to the other edge, where my damp face looked for the comfort in the softness of the pillow. I faced the wall when I slept  because that’s where I found myself at peace, that’s probably why I still do that today.

It’s getting closer to fall, so my parents enrolled my older brother and I to a Catholic school to be exact, St. Thomas Aquinas and my oldest brother to a Catholic High school. I could barely speak a sentence of English, even though I took an English class back in Indonesia. I walked to school with my brother and on the first day we met with some other Indonesian kids that went there. They were friendly, but sadly, they were all my brother’s age. I didn’t talk much in school, because I didn’t know how, but as I watched cartoons everyday I learned a lot. After three to four months later, the winter of 2006, I wasn’t afraid to speak to people. Things got harder for me, I was experiencing my first winter. I’m not used to this kind of weather, the coldest that I’ve ever experienced in Indonesia was probably about 60-70 degrees fahrenheit but it didn’t feel cold at all because of all the humidity there.

My family lived with my aunt, my dad’s oldest sister, until we can find our own place to live. Going to a catholic school meant that my parents had to spend a lot just for us to go to school. After a year, it was too much for them to send all three of us to a Catholic school so my oldest brother and I went to a public school and my second to oldest brother stayed at a Catholic school another year until he got into a public high school. With that said, moving to a new school meant I have to start all over again. I didn’t know anyone nor was I good in speaking English. Only a year has passed since I moved to the U.S and it was harder than I thought.

From second grade to eighth grade, I made a lot of friends and helped out a lot of teachers. Things were fine until I realized that I have to start highschool soon. As my eight grade year started, my mind was filled with talks about high school, “The best years of your life.” The fall of 2013 was one of the most important time for me. At times, I would feel really helpless because there were schools that my parents chose, there were schools I wanted to go to, and there were schools that I was eligible to apply to. After I finished applying to the schools that I wanted to go to, it was just a matter of time to get the results. Weeks passed, and then a couple months went by. I was really nervous when I finally received my high school acceptance letter. I decided to open it with one of my closest friends, hoping that we’d go to the same school. As I was holding the letter for the whole day, walking up and down the stairs, the walls were different colors in different parts of the school. Walking through the hallways, I noticed that the floors were dirtier than before, cobweb to my left, below the windows, dust on the edge of the doors. I was nervous; anxious to see what the results were, that I didn’t even focus on my class.

Long story short, I got accepted to my first choice school, Science Leadership Academy, SLA. Sadly, none of my friends got accepted so coming to SLA was like a fresh new book for me. It was a new start, a new story, that needs to be filled in. I’d say that high school is a fun experience. A new journey, without knowing anyone was an experience that can’t be forgotten. I made a lot of friends and got to know multiple teachers, but soon, I know that I’d have to start all over again as time passes by. Every new beginning will be a terrifying thing for me, sometimes it’ll probably stress me out, and sometimes I’ll probably be excited for it, but at the end, moving and having a new start can be a good thing. Like what Jim Rohn, an author of many books said, “Life is not just the passing of time. Life is the collection of experiences and their intensity.”

Not Everything Should be Shared

Posted by Athalia Tan in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 9:19 pm

What exactly is social media? It basically means interacting with other humans via apps and websites:  adding people as friends or following people, liking other people’s status and/or picture, commenting whatever they want under someone else’s picture, and chatting live. But, is it really safe to put personal information on social media? Even though people have the choice to make their profiles private, do they really know what they are signing up for when they choose “create account”? When people make a new account on any social media, they are asked to agree to the terms and condition, but since most people don’t read that because they are too excited to make that new account, it can lead to something else. People don’t realize that if they don’t fully understand the right way to share their life on the internet, it will result in giving away their privacy unintentionally.

According to netsmartz.org, most public schools are teaching kids about internet safety so that they know what’s safe to share online and what’s not. “Yet along with offering a fascinating, new way to connect with the world, the Internet also offers new risks: Cyberbullying, exposure to inappropriate material, online predators and revealing too much personal information.” (Basic Internet Safety) Most children know about internet safety but as they grow up and are becoming more active on social media, do they still remember what they are taught, or are did they just check it off like the “I agree to the term and conditions” box? Internet safety teaches people to rethink their decisions about putting personal information online, such as full name, phone number, social security number, address, etc. One popular social media that’s being used worldwide is Snapchat. It is said that “the app’s 150 million users base to 217 million users by the end of 2017.”(Business Insider) For example, on Snapchat, people have geofilters, which is a filter which shows someone’s location at the moment they take a picture. Using those filters can be a nice thing, but it also gives the location of a person which can also be dangerous. If the user’s account happened to be hacked that one moment, the hacker will know the location of their victim because of the geofilter that he/she used. People often misunderstand that something as small as a geofilter could harm them because they use the geofilters to show their friends on their Snapchat where they are. A lot of people use geofilters when going on a vacation so that others can where they are in the world.

Another app that’s being used worldwide is Instagram. On Instagram, people share photos and videos of themselves, and now they also are doing a similar thing like snapchat where people can post up pictures and photos on their story so that people can see where they are. The difference between Snapchat and Instagram with their stories is that, the people who can see other’s snapchat stories are only friends, that are added, but on Instagram, whether or not they are following that person, their stories are public to everyone. Taking pictures of a girls night out, date night, etc, can be risky because of that. Even though people want to share with their social media friends, not everyone is nice. Someone with bad intentions can recognize the area that the picture or video was taken and they can harm the user. That can be a dangerous situation because people take pictures to share with others the beauty that they see or just to show the world something. Even though it’s not intentional to show the web a little privacy about a user, many predators use that as an advantage. Taking a picture of a favorite restaurant or a favorite place can lead to danger. Sometimes it’s not safe to even share a specific spot that’s often visited by family and friends.

It’s best to know that some information should be kept personal and some can be shared with the world. Before sharing and letting the world know the location or the neighborhood, just remember that not everyone online are nice. People that are posting their new house or new car can be in danger because someone out there on the internet can end up stealing or breaking into the new house or car, just because of a simple post. It’s a problem not only for the user but also for the society because that can be an advantage for people who have a purpose to harm others. Sharing favorite locations to go with family and friends can be a way that predators track a user. There are stalkers and predators on the internet, so sharing a picture that shows a neighborhood or a place that’s known can be dangerous to everyone.

Readers Profile: Savannah Manns

Posted by Athalia Tan in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at 12:49 pm

Savannah only reads what she thinks is interesting to her. Something that blocks her from the busy and loud world around her. A book that lets her explore new things besides the things that she experience everyday. There are times where books fail to grab her attention and keep her in their world, so she decides to end their relationship together. She doesn’t like books that makes her sad and biographies, that talks about someone else’s life.

Her favorite childhood books that she still loves today would have to be “Gullible’s Troubles.” It’s a book that she loves until today because she can relate to it; she’s gullible. It’s also an interesting and funny book because the protagonist of the book believes in everything that’s everything he’s been told. Another book that she still loves is, “Goodnight moon,” in this bedtime story, the narrator said goodnight to. She said that the book is cute and it’s calming in a way that can help her sleep as a kid. Maybe even till now….

“Exploring Black Girl Magic,” that would be the title to Savannah Manns’ life. Why, you would ask? It’s because she want to be a better version of herself. Even though throughout her life she’s on a journey to finding the real Ms.Manns, in the black community, she’s found some magic in her. She grew up with a difficult situation in her family, but she’s getting there. As she goes on with her life, exploring the black girl magic in her, she’s also learning more and more about the world around her through the books she reads.

Survival vs Personal Needs

Posted by Athalia Tan in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Wednesday, April 6, 2016 at 12:50 pm

Living in a world full of restrictions and survival instincts can lead into something big. When people’s survival mode kicks in they tend to do things under pressure, whether it’s good or bad. There are rules and laws that society has put together which allow people to survive with one another; but many people decide to break the law for their own personal needs.

For a group of people to survive, everyone needs to have a set goal that they all agree on doing rather than each person having their own goal.” In The Lord of The Flies”, by William Golding, the boys in the story decided that since they couldn’t keep a fire on for other people outside of the island, they need shelters to survive. So, they agreed to make huts while the hunters, choir boys, try to find food while the other boys build the huts.  Everything went downhill when everyone decided that they wanted to do their own things. In the book it states, “And they keep running off. You remember the meeting? How everyone was going to work hard until the shelters were finished?’ ‘Everyone except me and the hunters -”(50). This example shows that when everyone decides to do things their own way, the goal won’t be reached. Since the boys were having too much fun doing their own things, they forgot about they were suppose to do, which was to build huts for shelters. In the book, they made two shelters, both were shaky and one was not stable. When people don’t follow the rules , their lives are at risk just like how the boys then have to try to survive using two unfinished shelters. At the time, the boys think that it was okay to just do whatever they wanted but then they ended up failing their goal.

Just like in the book, for people to follow rules they are willing to do anything to survive their everyday lives. Take the stealers of the world, what do they really get out of living of off stolen goods and hiding their secrets? They are only stealing to survive. It stated in an LATimesarticle that, “- they want the main brand names for resale.” This proves that when someone is trying to survive in  their daily lives, breaking the rules and laws will lead to problems amongst other people. This also tells the readers that the rules are there to bring unity for people but sometimes if people need to do what they have to do to make it through their day, they will. Since more of them steal brands that are resalable, they are not only breaking the law but they are also affecting their community because of their personal need. When people are not satisfied with what they have, they’ll end up doing things to fulfil that desire. For example, when someone is hungry and they have no money, they have to find food somehow either by going through trash, begging, even stealing because they need it to survive.

Another real world example is when people commit cannibalism. When you are out stranded somewhere and there’s no food, the only way to go was to your left or your right to one of your friends…Cannibalism started thousands and thousands of years ago, during the times of the neanderthals it states that “They lived together. They interbred. They ate together, and even ate each other. During periods of starvation, Neanderthals supplemented their diets with cannibalism, according to a 2006 study on eight 43,000-year-old Neanderthal skeletons.” The fact that neanderthals practiced the act of cannibalism to survive together shows that they set a rule among themselves to keep each other alives by eating together and eating each other. In this example, it shows that the neanderthals survived because they had each other, but if one of them decided to do their own thing, they wouldn’t have survived for long.

Going back to the book, the boys on the island did many things for their own needs, which lead to the whole group’s downfall. At this moment, Jack, the leader of the tribe, which are the choir boys and some others, and Ralph, the one appointed as chief were arguing on the mountain side. As they were yelling at each other, Piggy, the wisest of them all was standing next to Ralph and he was holding the conch that made Ralph chief of the boys on the island. One of the boys of the tribe, Roger felt abandoned, so as he was filled with hate, he threw a rock from above them and hit piggy and the conch. That threw piggy of the cliff onto the rocks of the shore. In the book it states that, “See?See? That’s what you’ll get! I meant that! There isn’t a tribe for you anymore! The conch is gone-’ He ran forward, stooping. ‘I’m chief!’ Viciously, with full intention, he hurled his spear at Ralph.”(181) This shows that because the group wasn’t in unity, something bad happened. At first the rule was that Ralph became the chief and Jack was the chief of the choir boys but Jack wanted everyone’s attention. Little did they know, since they both were busy on arguing over power, on of the boys felt abandoned that he decided to kill one of the boys. Since Jack wanted more power, he thought that because one of his tribe members killed Piggy and broke the conch, he’s now in power and no one can stop him because the conch is broken. If none of the boys broke the rules and kept the group in one whole, everyone would’ve survive but because each one had their own needs that they thought were so important, only a few survived at the end.

The next time you’re survival kicks in, remember that they are laws and rules that you still have to follow. Don’t get in the trouble because of your own needs, always think before you do something. The things you do as an individual can affect your surroundings positively or negatively.

For my ILP, I'm volunteering at my elementary/middle school. I have a teacher there that I love working with. She's teaching sixth grade there and usually I help her grade papers and do errands for her. For me, helping out my old school is like giving back to them. Sometimes I also get to see my other teachers and lend a helping hand to them so I enjoy going to my ILP every week.

Hidden Love

Posted by Athalia Tan in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Sunday, November 22, 2015 at 6:24 pm

(Boy + girl walks in, girl speaks.) I have a best friend, Billy. We became close ever since I moved to California from New York. Our parents knew each other, so we were practically meant to be and have each other’s backs. I moved when I was about 5 turning 6. We went to the same school ever since. Everyone knows us as Billy & Miranda, the lowkey lovers. I didn’t really like that because I never saw him more than a best friend, but then one day it hit me...

It was summer of our junior year when I realized the look in his eyes. Every time he looks at me, it’s different. (Looks at her, pointing at a direction and then walking there.) We’ve been friends since forever, his parents are pretty close with mines, so we basically grew up together. But it wasn’t till summer I realized all the jokes our friends were making. That look in his eyes when he talks to me, it’s just different. His eyes grew bigger, prettier, I try not to make eye contact when I’m with him, so I just laugh at what he says and look away. Growing up, I know that he’ll always be there for me, to protect me, to beat up the people who bothered me, he’s like my guardian angel. (White light shines on the guy.) I didn’t realize is that he’ll become someone I’d admire the most.

(Walks around the stage to sit at the bench.) I don’t know what will happen if we do go out. I mean it wouldn’t surprise people, but what if it doesn’t work out? What if at the end we won’t say a word to each other? Who’s going to be there when I need a friend, who’s going to be there when I need help? (Looks at each other and smiles, the sun sets from the screen in the back.) My friend, my dearest friend, you’ve been there for me through the ups and the downs, through thick and thin; but what if we get sick of each other, what if you decided that we should’ve just stayed close friends? I can’t afford to lose someone like you.

(Guy turns to the girl, and smiles.) (Girl looks back at him, smiling.) There you go again, with those eyes and that smile. (bits lip and gets a little flirty happy, then quickly gets serious) Wait no, please do not do anything stupid. I wasn’t sure about my feelings, the way you would look at me with those eyes. Again, I just smiled and looked away. It was getting chilly as the night approaches. (Girl folds her arm, the guy saw and gave her his jacket.) Wait, no, don’t be like this,(She shook her head, pushing the jacket back to him.) I know you’re cold too (guy puts jacket around her) (girl just smiles.) Thank you. (Both actors get up and walks over to beginning position.) (Lights turned off.)

Manipulative Tongues

Posted by Athalia Tan in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 9:21 pm

Language is a form of communication that people or animals use. Since everyone is different, that means that we have different ways of communicating. Mostly by age groups; but there are also other major differences in the way we communicate. .

One day when I was walking from school, I saw an old friend of mines. I didn’t even recognize her until she came up to me.

“Hey! I haven’t seen you in like forever!”

“I know right, how you been?”

“Good, how ‘bout you?”

“I’m great, everything is ok.”

“That’s good, it’s nice to see you, I gotta go right now, I’ll call you later. Maybe we can go out for lunch or dinner next time.”

“Sure, that’ll be nice, see you!”

People have many different  ways to talk to one another. The Japanese said that you have three faces. The first face is the one you show to the world. The second one is the one that you show to your family and your close friends. The third one is the one that you never show anyone, and that’s the truest reflection of yourself. To my understanding, the faces you show also needs to be shown by communicating. They way you communicate to the people around you shows who you are as an individual.

Most of the time, people talk to their peers, their closest friends, using a slang words, or

short phrases that are usually common within their generation.  Maybe it might be different when you talk to people that’s not your age, because different generations have different ways of speaking. For example, if a teen uses slang talking to an adult, the adult could think that the teen isn’t properly schooled, or is dumb. It’s also the other way around, where the kids would say that the adults are too “old” to know what they are talking about.

Language can intersect with a person’s identity in many different ways.

“Hey man, how you doin?, I heard Tay threw you an oop with that girl the other day.”

“Wassup man, I’ve been good. Yea he did, that girl got them full moons, yamean”

When people hear things like that, they’re going to say that you’re a kid from the hood. But, if someone said,

“Hey, how are you? I haven’t see you in a long time”

“Hi, I’m doing very good, how about you? And yes, I think the last time I saw you was when you were on your way to school.”

Now, if people hear that conversation, they’ll quickly identify me as an educated kid, who’s smart, kind, etc. Since everyone has a language that they speak, people will criticize or assume who you are just by the things you say. If a little kid came up to me, or anyone that’s older than them, and they start cursing and saying things they shouldn’t be saying; we will all automatically say that the little kid was poorly raised.

Why? Because everyone has a fixed mindset on how someone should talk. I think that people would criticize me more just because of my race. Since, I’m Asian, people assume that our parents are strict and that if we curse or say something bad, people are going to say many different things about me. My parents aren’t that strict, they let me do many things and they trust me to do the right things. I know that if I talked to an adult or someone older than me the way that I talk to my friends, they’re going to say that I have no manners and that my parents didn’t raise me correctly.

I talk differently when I’m around different people. If I’m at school, I’ll talk a certain way to my friends and then another way to the adults or teachers. I usually talk using less slang and more proper English with the grown ups that I encounter. I also talk differently when I’m at home. Since my parents doesn’t speak English, I have to speak to them in Indonesian, and I can’t just talk to them as I normally do. It’s the same as if I was talking to an adult in english; I have to speak to them with proper manners because they are my parents and I have to show them respect. Just like the story I read class where the kid also spoke differently with different people.

Whenever I talk, I talk differently depending on who I’m with. Like when I’m with my friends from school, I would talk to them with slang or with more abbreviated words.

“Yo, where ya goin?”

“I got class in like 5 minutes, I gotta get upstairs. How ‘bout you?

“Same, but my next one is on this floor, so I gotta stay here.”

“Ard, see you later b”

“Ard, later”

As the younger or teenage student of this generation, we usually use more abbreviated words. I think that the language that I use can say a little about me. I know that when people hear me talk to my friends, they might be a little shocked, because of my race but since I grew up in South Philly, I talk like how others talked to me while I was growing up. When I talk to people my age, they’ll say that I’m kind of ghetto, or if you can ask any of my friends, the say that I’m not even Asian, I’m black; because of the way I talk to them. They believe that I am a mean person, but to me, when I talk most of the time, I try to tell my friends the truth and it might be mean to them, but I think that it’s better than to tell them a lie and sugar coating something that’s wrong.

If you ask an adult about me, they might say a different thing about me. If someone asks the teachers at school, they might say that I might be a little loud, or that I’m shy because I don’t participate in class. If someone asks the people that I grew up with which is my church community, they’ll say that I a nice kid, but also I can be a little wild. I might from time to time be a little crazy with the things I say, but I’m a funny person and caring most of the time and that I talk to them with respect and honor.

I think that there are many different ways language identifies a person and how I talk says a lot about myself. Since different people talk differently, they might have only one way of talking to everyone, but there are also people like me, who talks differently depending on my environment. There are a many ways a person can communicate in their daily lives, so it's okay if you differently or the same when you communicate.

I'm thinking of going Jeremy after I talk to my old principal. I've been trying to find time to go back to my old school because I want to help out there. I think what got in the way was that I wasn't really sure on what I wanted to do. I think that it's important because, since I know my old school, I can try to help them out.

The End of Reconstruction.

Posted by Athalia Tan in African American History - Jonas - A on Wednesday, April 29, 2015 at 10:08 pm

Artist Statement

As my visual, I decided to make a concept map. It shows that at the end of the reconstruction era, the blacks were still getting the same treatments. There were violence; beating, whipping, killing and there was so called “freedom”; with restrictions, segregation, and living. This visual has a meaning because it is telling the readers that even after the reconstruction, the former slaves became freedmen but yet they were still getting the same treatments. The quotes that I used are all from former slaves/freedmen after the reconstruction.

One element that the visual has that may not be clear for the reader is the branch in the middle that doesn’t connect to anything. That might not be clear because everything else is connected to one another, but that one isn’t. I decided to put that by itself in the middle because the phrase sums up the whole visual. It says, “The blacks were still under the whites,” which is what was happening. Even after the reconstruction, the blacks were suppose to be freedmen, but yet they were still under the whites and they had a hard time living on their own.

Another thing that might not be clear to the audience are the “branches”, the connections from one thing to another. The connections are pointing out the different points of the certain topic. For violence, it is connecting to three different points; whipping, beating and killing, because those are all a part of violence. For “freedom”, it’s connecting to restriction, living?, and segregation. Each of the points are connecting to two different quotes that I found from former slaves/freedmen that were spoken after the reconstruction.

My visual shows that after the reconstruction, the blacks were still getting the same treatments. They were treated poorly, they didn’t have their so called freedom, and they were still under the whites. Even though many believed that the reconstruction gave the former slaves freedom, they didn’t really fully get their freedom until about a hundred years later. That is why I think it matters as to the African American history as a whole.

Q3 Art Reflection

Posted by Athalia Tan in Art - Freshman - Hull - y2 on Friday, April 10, 2015 at 11:14 am
What do you feel like you accomplished with your final drawing?
I feel like I accomplished more than I thought I would.

What would you change or differently if you could do this project again?
I would add more details and try to make everything more neat and organized.

Find a drawing on the wall that you think is successful. Describe it. Why is it successful?
I think that Elanor's drawing is successful because it has a lot of details and she manage to make everything through the one point perspective.

What did you learn about one point perspective?
I learned that through the one point perspective, the visible side of the object have to be made based on where it is from the one point perspective.

Net Neutrality

Posted by Athalia Tan in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - y1 on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 1:56 pm
Untitled presentation (2)
Why is net neutrality important for teens to know about?

Net neutrality is important for teens to know because teens like freedom. Net neutrality is the freedom of internet use that is in the edge of getting taken away. Teens should learn more net neutrality because they spend most of their time using internet for everything. I think that if teens don t know about net neutrality they would get mad if their ISP made the "fast lanes" to slow down some of the sites they use.
Its important for teens to know net neutrality because if their freedom of internet get taken away, they could get mad and doesn't realize what was happening. If we don't have net neutrality we wouldn't have equal internet access from our ISPs. If we don't have it, some of the sites that we use will be slower than the other sites, such as Netflix. Teens now are on Netflix to watch lots of movies and if the ISP makes the use of Netflix slower, it would be a big problem.
If the ISPs get to make their fast lanes and net neutrality is taken away, we might have to pay more for the internet we use daily. Teens should know about the rights that they have online. The next generation of kids won't know what its like to have networking rights. I hope that teens will understand how important it is for them to know about net neutrality.

I chose to make my slide like that for many reasons. One reason is that I chose to use large text and I decided to manage my space so it wouldn't be too crowded. I also made some of my pictures bleed off the slide because not the full picture should be used. I wrote "Express Yourself" in red because I think that it would catch people's attention if it was on a billboard. It contrast with the white background which catches the eye. The pictures that I used expresses some of the things that I like. I like keeping things simple, but meaningful so I decided to make my slide not too flashy. I sing and dance at church, so it became a hobby for me. I like working and helping out little kids, they're always make someone smile. I love chilling/hanging out with my friends and watch movies. Music and shopping is just my thing! I love music because everyone can relate to them and shopping is always fun.

mind mapping software

2. My L.A.N connects from my ISP, that gives me internet in my house. Our ISP give internet to our modem that connects to our router through a coax wire. Our router gives wifi for our house. On the wifi, there are 5 phones, 3 laptops, 3 tablets, a mac mini, an xbox one, and a ps3.

3. I learned that there are many different things that has the be processed before you can get access to a website. It takes less than a second for it all to process which is really fascinating to me. I didn't realized it had to go through lots of stages to access something on the internet.

4. I would tell people that each ISP/Home network have rules also. If they don't follow the rules that are given they can be in big trouble. I would also remind them that whatever they upload on the internet will never be deleted even if you delete the file on your device.
