My capstone was to research the writing style of Mythical Realism and apply it to a collection of short stories I would write. I wanted to learn about the process of writing a choose your own adventure story that incorporated Magical Realism and multiple types of perspectives and writing styles. I would definitely say that I spend too much time on the research, and unfortunately underestimated the amount of time I would need to write. Thus I have labelled by project unfinished, and to be continued on my own time as a personal project. I saw my capstone as more of a learning process than writing a book, even though that was my original goal. I feel as if I have strengthened my skills, confidence, and understanding when it comes to creating and developing a story. I spent a lot of time reading and annotating other books, and I think one of the hardest things I had to learn was how to just start writing. I felt extremely unprepared when I first did so, and I went through at least four drafts for most of my stories. I somewhat regret this, but I hope that when I eventually complete it, the collection is something I can be proud of.

For my capstone, I decided to work with holograms, as a hologram is something that interests me, and holograms involve different kinds of engineering that I am not very familiar with, electrical engineering and coding.

In my final product, there is a port which takes the input from a laptop, process it through an Arduino Nano, then display it on a TFT LCD screen. Then the information displayed on the LCD screen reflect onto a mirror, then to a piece of translucent acrylic glass. The whole thing is connected to a pair of glasses frame, and the wearer can read information from the acrylic glass through their right eyes.

My capstone did not end up exactly where I wanted it to be, I was imagining something better, but I did not have the skills to do that yet. I do plan to continue working on it throughout college. Since it did not turn out to be as good or as small as I wanted it to be, I decided to have some fun in the end, and I made the case very spiky, and I named my final product “Spiky”.

In the end, not only did I learned electrical engineering and coding, I also had a lot of fun and learned things about myself.

The main reason behind doing this project is because of how open my heart is to any and everyone. I consider myself to be a great listener and a leader. Considering the fact that I grew up in a household where I was the youngest; I've always wanted to know how it felt to have a younger sibling. With this being said, I have always been attached to having like a big sister relationship with young people that I encounter with. In certain conversations that I have with younger children, I started to realize that they open up to me which makes me feel very special and trustworthy. Having a love for listening to other people and giving the best advice I possibly can is why I decided to mentor/ teach younger girls for my senior project. Twice a week I traveled to West Philadelphia Achievement Charter Elementary School and met up with my mentor. We came up with different topics and activities for the girls each time we met. I had the opportunity to teach and work with each girl individually. Being with these young girls has taught me a little bit about myself and others each time I attended. Patience is definitely the key to success when working with younger children because children around that age can get distracted very easily. This experience with these 5th grade girls shaped and formed my mindset which made me a better me and just appreciating the small things in life considering the fact that these girls have been through a lot.

           Capstone Bibliography

Rodriguez, Havidan. “Mentoring Best Practices.” A Handbook, Dec. 1968,
<https://www.albany.edu/academics/mentoring.best.practices.chapter3.shtml
>
When I first reviewed this source I automatically thought this one would be perfect for the mentoring aspect of my capstone. Knowing the steps of achieving that great mentor role puts me in a position of  of actually being a good mentor. On this website, I see some steps I can take if I ever got stuck or needed assistance on what to do next. Being knowledgeable about new steps that you're taking is always useful. If I didn't like how I handled the group discussion one day, I can always refer back to this website to guide me. I also learned the importance of having a great relationship with the students you are mentoring so there can be a form of trust. This source definitely applies to me considering the fact Im mentoring.

Sparks , Sara. Growth Mindset. 11 Sept. 2013
<https://www.ttacjmu.org/assets/files/resource/307/growth_mindset.pdf>

This source talks about growth mindsets and how children began to learn certain things and how they process information. It is important to know this because they are in the stage where they do need guidance and help and if a adult or someone older doesn't realize that then they get frustrated which can cause a bigger problem. This source points out that all students are different and something that is easy to one person may not be too eat for another. This is also important to know while dealing with 5th graders because as I began to get into asking questions and being more involved I h e to take into consideration that all of the girls may not be as comfortable as another. This source has helped me realized that no one thinks exactly the same.

Admin. Group Discussion Skills . 7 June 2011, www.teachingenglish.org.uk/article/group-discussion-skills.

This source talks about the importance of group discussions and how beneficial they can be. There's always a line that you don't want to cross when dealing with speaking out loud to a group. Meaning not judging or offending anyone else in the  process of speaking. The article separates the different categories of handling one's emotions. There is multiple kinds of discussions a person can have such as making decisions to solving a problem. I think this is an important aspect of my project because as a 5th grader you began to experience different things such as bullying or peer pressure. Me as a mentor and empowering this girl, it is important for me to know how to help and how to bring it in.

Daley, Suzanne. “Little Girls Lose Their Self-Esteem Way to Adolescence, Study Finds.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 8 Jan. 1991, www.nytimes.com/1991/01/09/education/little-girls-lose-their-self-esteem-way-to-adolescence-study-finds.html.

One topic in my discussion is about self esteem and confidence. I thought it would be important to touch on this topic because it's about that age girls start to talk about one another or they start to become insecure. This source explains how young girls lose their self esteem at just a young age. Study shows that females deal with being less confident more than men because of hormones and stuff they experience. This is why I think it's important to have this discussion with younger girls to inform and remind them about how beautiful they are no matter what. Some days there will be times where you feel insecure but don't let that change anything about yourself.

movieclips. “Waiting to Exhale (3/5) Movie CLIP - Ladies Night (1995) HD.” YouTube, YouTube, 15 Oct. 2015, www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUO9-h182d4.

This source is a movie Waiting to Exhale is a good source to represent how girls can come together to stay together and build each other up. This movie is mainly about challenges that these women have been through but with the help of each other they got through. This movie is a great source because of the fact that this prove the point of my capstone. One of the main goals is to build up their confidence and for them to build up each others confidence and self esteem. I want them to understand that their will be struggles in their lives but they will get through it.

Findley, Jennifer, et al. “What to Expect When Teaching 5th Graders.” Teaching to Inspire with Jennifer Findley, 22 July 2017, teachingtoinspire.com/2016/06/expect-teaching-5th-graders.html.

This source is going to be helpful because it is a guide to thinking how a 5th grader acts and interacts with one other. Using this source helps me get into the mind of a 11 year old. It is expressed that they are very talkative and exciting about learning. This is good in the sense that we are discussing different topics and unique ideas so I do want them to be excited about being there and wanted to talk. It is just about when we are calming down and wrapping everything up and how to bring it in.

https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=HkWRAgAAQBAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PP1&dq=mentoring+students&ots=43DMBa0Pt_&sig=7xHqZ0hjRPrDZaANHCAbxSqvM9c#v=onepage&q=mentoring%20students&f=false

This source showed me the importance of mentoring and talking to each other. Transitioning from different ages and as you get older you start to experience things like liking boys and getting your period (puberty). It's good to have someone to talk to when it's not your parents or a teacher. When it is someone else that is around our age but older it can feel good to get off your chest without having to worry about your parents being in your business. It's good to have other people to talk to. This information holds the valable reasons of why mentoring is important and can help not only younger people but anyone.

“Five Essential Tips for Teaching Very Young Children English.” Five Essential Tips for Teaching Very Young Children English | British Council, www.britishcouncil.org/voices-magazine/five-essential-tips-teaching-very-young-children-english.

This source is a source that gives tips on how to educate young children without making it boring or lecturing them. Letting them know that there is a purpose on why I'm doing what I'm doing and that it will greatly help them. I found this source from google scholar and searching how to work with younger get when learning and paying attention.  This source will guide me to talking to the 5th graders in a way that they will understand. In other words, breaking down the words I may use into a better understanding that they can use and understand.

McKeown, Marie. “How to Engage Children and Keep Their Attention: Tips for Parents and Educators.” WeHaveKids, WeHaveKids, 19 Apr. 2016, wehavekids.com/parenting/how-to-engage-children.

This source explains how to keep children's attention and involved in conversation. It is important for me to know this because sometimes things can get out of hand and they can start to talk to one another and get off task. This website helps because it helps me make a decision on what I need to do in order to get them back on track and pay attention. Considering the fact children want to have fun when learning I understand that things will get a little off task. It is important for me to know how to handle that without getting upset and mad at them.

Strauss, Valerie. “Why Strong Afterschool Programs Matter.” The Washington Post, WP Company, 15 Dec. 2011, www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/answer-sheet/post/why-strong-afterschool-programs-matter/2011/12/14/gIQAvtUpuO_blog.html?utm_term=.71706aad84a1.

This source explains why it is good to have an after school program and how it can help a young mind mature and just have fun instead of being in trouble. Taking the minds and stress off of young ones is important so they can grow up and know what they like so they can keep themselves busy when in a stressful situation. It is important for kids to grow up being involved in positive things. It is proven that an active mind is a great mind to have especially when young.

For my capstone, I decided to document Equal Flows activity throughout the year and create a Website. Equal Flow is a non-profit organization my fellow classmates and I created to work towards our goal of having free menstrual products for homeless women. This process overall started out by us winning our Junior year Invisible Issues competition. From here, we kept working by collecting donations, having a coat drive, handing out products to women in need, having a product-raising yoga class, and more. My website is a place where you can get to know Equal Flow better, see our photos, see our accomplishments, and listen to stories from people who have been homeless and shared their experiences. I also wanted our site to be a place where you can find other organizations that help homeless women as well in Philadelphia. Personally, I learned that even though I am surrounded by tall buildings and expensive companies every day, there are people that live on the streets when I go home. Learning how hard being homeless can be for women made me realize that it's even harder when you're suffering from not having the basic materials you need. We wanted to come together as young women and help where we can. Hopefully, my website fully captures the great experience this was to do as my Capstone.

Annotated Bibliography:

Homelessness, health, and human needs. National Academy Press, 1989.

When I reviewed this source, it immediately gave me information regarding demographics, the growing rate of homeless people in the US, and how the composition of the homeless population has changed over time. As I started reading this source, I wasn't sure how it would help deepen my understanding of my topic, but as I continued on, this source gives great insight on general information of homelessness. I think this source will come in handy when interviewing some homeless women and simply understanding their point of views better. I feel as though this will also benefit me in being more sensitive to the topic when talking to people that live this reality every day.

2. Cray, Colin. How to Podcast: Equipment, Strategy & Skills. Wild Trails Media Publishing, 2016, www.indiana.edu/~sphk200/students/2016-How-to-Podcast-with-cover.pdf.

This source helped me because I didn't know much about creating my own podcasts. Looking over this book, it shows me the necessary steps I have to take in order to be successful. I learned exactly what a podcast is (a series of audio or video recordings) and how it can be the perfect way for people to listen to them on the go since they are usually audio. This source was helping in addressing the difference between an audio file and a podcast; an RSS feed makes it so that the listener would subscribe to the site and stay up to date on new podcasts. Although you can just upload an audio file onto a site, it will still count as a podcast.

3. “Creating a Successful Awareness Campaign for Native Communities.” How To Create A Successful Awareness Campaign For Native Communities | Native American | PSA Worldwi, psacorp.com/pgs/lgcy/t-creating-a-successful-awareness-campaign.aspx.

This source relates to creating a successful campaign for Native communities, but I'm still using it because the same aspects apply. The information provided in this source is surrounded around measuring goals, being realistic with goals, identifying support, managing money and time, and paying attention to who your specific audience is. This information is important for my capstone given that all these things need to be taken into consideration regarding Equal Flows goals. The only limitation of this source is that it is specific to raising awareness for Native communities, but all the details can be used for other awareness campaigns as well.

4. Gelberg, L, et al. “The Behavioral Model for Vulnerable Populations: application to medical care use and outcomes for homeless people.” Health Services Research, U.S. National Library of Medicine, 5 Feb. 2000, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1089079/.

This source speaks on the model of access to care that is particularly applicable to vulnerable populations (specifically the homeless population). Topics touched on in this source include mental health, substance use, residential history, competing needs, and victimization. I felt that this was helpful for me given that I will be talking with homeless people and understanding the things the general public and I don't know about the struggles that homeless adults face will better my capstone as a whole. A limitation of this source is that the topic is broader than what my project is focusing on; It talks about homeless adults while we are focusing on homeless women specifically.

5. Johnstone, Melissa, et al. “Discrimination and well-Being amongst the homeless: the role of multiple group membership.” Frontiers in Psychology, Frontiers Media S.A., 24 Dec. 2015, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4450171/.

This source is helpful because it talks about the stigma and discrimination toward people who are homeless. Some information that I thought would be helpful is that homeless also experience disproportionate rates of health problems and associated social disadvantages. Like a similar source I did, I felt that this one would be helpful since I will be talking with homeless people and just understanding their lifestyles better will better my capstone. I selected this source because I figured it would be useful in what I am doing. A limitation of this source is it doesn't go into the specific groups of homeless people and each groups problems.

6. Editors, The PLoS Medicine. “Homelessness Is Not Just a Housing Problem.” PLOS Medicine, Public Library of Science, journals.plos.org/plosmedicine/article?id=10.1371%2Fjournal.pmed.1000003.

This source breaks down the causes of homelessness into individual factors such as drug and alcohol misuse, lack of social support, family background, including family breakdown and disputes. I found this source useful because it has a different perspective on homelessness. The actual roots of it and how it can affect the mind of a person. It talks about the multiple sides of this complex issue. I selected it because even though I didn't think it would be directly helpful for my capstone, I feel as though it will indirectly affect it. Looking over this article, I see the statistics that will help me understand how homelessness works.

7. Adichie, Chimamanda Ngozi. “We should all be feminists.” TED: Ideas worth spreading, www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_ngozi_adichie_we_should_all_be_feminists#t-1756032.

This source was a Ted Talk mainly talking about gender and the culture we have that divides us as people. This source was helpful to me because in Equal Flow, receiving donations for menstrual products is apart of us helping women who can't afford these necessities. Tampons and pads are seen as a luxury item even though they are necessary sanitary items. The only limitation I could place is that this Ted Talk was only on gender, the topic was not homelessness, but it did still relate. I selected this source because women face homelessness differently (not dismissing anyone's struggles); if they don't have money for a meal or a jacket then they don't have the money for a menstrual product.

8. Fisher, Benjamin W., et al. “Leaving Homelessness Behind: Housing Decisions among Families Exiting Shelter.” Housing policy debate, U.S. National Library of Medicine, 1 Jan. 2014, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4170684/.

This source talks about federally funded shelter or housing assistance programs and how they are potentially useful to homeless families. I felt that this would be beneficial for me in being knowledgeable about housing for homeless individuals. I found this source useful because it has a different perspective on homelessness. Limitations for me and my group are that we cannot provide this type of help, but it is still good to know. I selected it because even though I didn't think it would be directly helpful for my capstone, I feel as though it will indirectly affect it.

9. Fisher, Benjamin W., et al. “Leaving Homelessness Behind: Housing Decisions among Families Exiting Shelter.” Housing policy debate, U.S. National Library of Medicine, 1 Jan. 2014, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4170684/.

This source provides information about Women and families and how they represent the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. I selected this source because the information on homeless women and families having subsidies prevent so much, so knowing the outcome of a shelter makes a huge difference. This complements my capstone since it is specifically about homeless women and their struggles. I found this source useful because it mentions how permanent housing can lead to helping formerly homeless families to maintain long-term stability. One limitation of this source was that, again, we cannot provide any type of housing, but this information is useful to know.

10.Days for Girls International | Turning Periods Into Pathways, 4 Nov. 2011, www.daysforgirls.org/dfg-our-approach.

I thought this source might be useful given that is deals with donations and knowing how that whole process works. Looking over the site, there are pictures of girls and information about their movement. This program is about girls who have been silenced, who feel invisible, and know what poverty is like and that exactly what Equal Flow is about. The founder of this program talked about knowing what it was like for girls who dropped out of school because of lack of feminine products. I chose this source because it has the same values as my capstone and reflects the same mindset as us.

J'Lynn Matthews Capstone

Posted by J'Lynn Matthews in Capstone · Menasion · Wed on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 8:01 pm

My capstone project was to travel to Costa Rica on a field study to research water supply, security, and interactions. Before my trip, I did a lot of research to gather as much information on the topic as possible. I did not want to travel to a new country completely ignorant and blinded. Going into the project and trip, I knew that all of my research would not be feasible. Because most of the research I did were from secondary sources, I knew that I was not collecting the desired information, which made my trip more important. On the trip I was able to collect and gather as much primary sources as I possibly could; just being there and seeing everything for myself was also a primary source. The process was a little challenging since only a few natives spoke english. With the help from guides and a few of my classmates, I was able to understand and gather useful information. A lot of my information also came from observation. Any observation I would make, I asked questions pertaining to it to clarify my understanding. Arriving to Costa Rica, I was stunned by my ignorance and I wasn’t the only one. If a group of people were ignorant of the country’s lifestyle, then it’s for certain that a lot more people are too. Once I returned from the trip, I wanted to not only create a project surrounding water in Costa Rica, but on the small details of the country as well.

Website: Costarica-waterexperience.weebly.com

Annotated Bibliography

Bower, Kathleen M. “Water Supply and Sanitation of Costa Rica.” SpringerLink, Springer Berlin Heidelberg, 2 Apr. 2013, https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s12665-013-2416-x.

When I first opened this source, I thought it would have all the information I would need. It was titled “Water supply and Sanitation of Costa Rica”. This made me think that I would gather, if not all, majority of my information here. Although this source did not hold all of the information I needed, it did help with my process. This source is an article on water supply and sanitation in Costa Rica. It holds informations about environmental care and the sustainability of water resources. I found it by simply researching water systems in Costa Rica. This source supports my capstone by giving me thorough information about my topic. This article provided stats on population and supply of domestic water resources, which helps me get an understanding of how things happen in Costa Rica.

Porras, Nazareth. (2016).The Sixaola River Basin: Costa Rica and Panama. San José, Costa Rica: UICN, 12 pp. https://www.iucn.org/sites/dev/files/content/documents/bridge_sixaola_english.pdf.

When I first found this source I was very impressed with the amount of information it provided. This source is a textbook article on the Sixaola River Basin. The basin is located between Costa Rica and Panama, right by the Yorkín community, which is relatively close to the Bribri community. The Sixaola River extends over 2,848.3 km2 (1099.73 mi2). 19% of the river is located in Panama and 81% in Costa Rica. The river plays a huge role as a watershed for several communities including the Bribri community. I found this information very useful since I will be studying the interactions between the people of the community and the river. Learning the aspects of the river gives me an idea of how it may be used by the community. This also makes me question Costa Rica’s interaction with Panama.

Blanco, Adrián Martinez, and Diana Ubico Durán. “Water Security in the Sixaola River Basin.” Peace and Conflict, Monitor, 30 Apr. 2014, www.monitor.upeace.org/innerpg.cfm?id_article=1043.

I found this source by researching the security of the Sixaola River in Costa Rica. I searched this topic because the security of the river is something to keep track of since the river is shared by many communities and multiple countries. When I found this source, I thought it was pretty useful because it identified challenges within the basin and communities and how security impacted different communities.  This source is an analytical article on the security of the basin, as a whole. Parts of the article focuses on Costa Rica and other parts focuses on Panama. Overall, this article gives me information on how the two countries are dependent on each other.

“The Binational Commission of the Sixaola River Basin Draws Municipalities Together for the Environment.” IUCN, 19 May 2016, www.iucn.org/content/binational-commission-sixaola-river-basin-draws-municipalities-together-environment.

When I found this source I thought that it was a perfect representation of how Costa Rica and Panama works together. I found this source by researching collaborations of Costa Rica and Panama with respect to the Sixaola River. It basically explained what companies and associations are involved and what roles they play in taking care of the basin. It also elaborates on why it is important for the two to do so. This source is very helpful because it allows me to see how certain associations take stances on specific human resources. It also helps me because it answers many of my questions of how the two countries come together.

“POV Call for Entries Broadcast Season 2018.” POV, PBS, 2017, http://cfe.pov.org/POVcfeSubmissionGuidelines.pdf.

When I found this source, I thought it was very helpful for my final product. Initially, I wanted to make a documentary and post it on the SLA homepage. This source is an article and flyer for a documentary competition. I found this source very helpful because for part of my final project I will be creating a documentary. Since this documentary will be on water supply, security, and interactions with the Sixaola River in Costa Rica I want to share my findings with more than just the SLA community. I feel as though more people in the world would be interested in my projects and its findings. This source also benefits me because it helps advertise my project. But overall, I want my documentary to be a learning experience to many.

Stinson, Jim. “Shooting the Journey: A Guide to Vacation Video.” Videomaker, 1 Mar. 1995, www.videomaker.com/article/f2/1404-shooting-the-journey-a-guide-to-vacation-video.

When I found this source, I thought it was very beneficial. Because the basics of this documentary is the journey that I will be on, I wanted to learn how to properly record my trip. Since I have never recorded any type of experience or journey before, I thought it would only be right to research how. This source is very helpful because it teaches me how to keep track of what I record and what things I should record. Rather than just explaining what to put in a documentary, it explains how to acquire certain aspects.

Fisher, Sky. “How to Visit The Largest Indigenous Community in Costa Rica.” Epicure & Culture, 7 June 2017, https://epicureandculture.com/bribri-travel/.

This source is basically someone’s personal experience in the  community themselves. It gives a perspective of the things that happened or that’s going to happen. It’s basically a “what to expect” guide. This guide explains things that someone usually wouldn’t wonder; like, how do you get to the actual community? Well, the community is only accessible by boat. This is very useful information, especially since, I will be journeying their myself. This source gives me an idea of what everything will be like. It also allows me to prepare for the tri and the many encounters within it. This source also provides ways to get involved with community; whether it’s for vacation, touring, or service work.

Fariña, Ana Lucía. “Bribri Women Lead the Way in Community-Based Tourism in Costa Rica.” Cultural Survival, Cultural Survival Quarterly Magazine, Mar. 2012, www.culturalsurvival.org/publications/cultural-survival-quarterly/bribri-women-lead-way-community-based-tourism-costa-rica.

This source is an article story written by a Costa Rican tour guide. In this article they reflect on the indigenous people of the Yorkín and Bribri communities. Since we will be invading a community, I wanted to study the people that’ll be there. I wanted to know their background and history so that I was not completely oblivious and ignorant of their growth. I found this source very helpful because not only did it elaborate on the people, it explained the culture and history behind it. It made me aware of some of their struggles and how they may overcome them. It also points out the diversity in the community; gender, age, and color diversity are uniquely important within Costa Rican communities. This source also points out some future goals that the native people has made.

“Making Documentaries: A Step By Step Guide.” Desktop-Documentaries, www.desktop-documentaries.com/making-documentaries.html.

I found this source by looking up ways to prepare for a documentary. Because I am planning on filming and creating my own documentary, I searched the proper steps in order to do so. I’ve made a documentary before, in the past, so I’m not completely in the dark of how to create one. But since it has been a while since I’ve done so, I didn’t want to miss any components when creating one. When I was looking for this source I thought it was the best one. It basically has the whole thought process and timeline laid out for the planning, filming, and editing process. Not only does it have the process broken down, it also has instructions and examples on how to do it.

For my capstone I decided to do a documentary on my uncle, Stacey Torrance. Stacey was arrested at the age of fourteen and given life in prison without the ability of parole, he was released last year at the age of 43. For the capstone I decided to do lots of research on the criminal justice system, go to his final court date and film him and his mother in a sit down interview.

For my Senior Capstone, I chose to give back to the SLA Shop. Throughout my high school career the SLA Shop has given me a great deal of experience in engineering that I will carry with me for the rest of my life. I wanted to grow the shops certification process by creating single procedure sheets to help students get familiar with each tool so that they may be eventually certified in the tool. Some tools in the shop do have the single sheet produced sheets, however the tools that I have created sheets for are some of the most used in our shop. I wanted to make sure that these key aspect of our space had a healthy amount of information the students could consume to properly and effectively use each tool. Doing research on each tool by reading the manuals provided by the tools companies, hands on experience, and getting feedback from fellow classmates and Mr. Kamal throughout the school year, I have created well thought out and information sheets that provide students with all the key things they need to know to operate the tools, and my hope is that they will hang above each tool for years to come.

In college, I plan to study marketing. Marketing is the research, promotion, selling, and distribution of a product or service. I wanted my capstone to relate to marketing, so I decided to create new SLA merch. My goal was to create school spirit, but also have a piece of merchandise that can be sold in the school store later on. Many students like to carry blankets around school to keep them cozy. With this in mind, I decided to make an SLA blanket. I contacted Home and School President, Diana, to help me with this. She led me to Liz, who handles some of the SLA merchandise. Liz gave me a catalog that I can search through, and there I found a blue fleece blanket. Liz also gave me a stitched design that I could use, which is the picture above. The blue fleece blanket has “SLA” with the rocket logo stitched in the right corner. Liz and I coordinated shipping costs and dates. Students needed to pre order their blanket for $13 each. From there, I started to advertise around school with posters, and advisory memo appearances. I collected students’ $13, and gave Liz my order. I learned that there is a lot more to creating and selling a product than you think. Every detail is important, and to get the consumers to like and want your product, it must be appealing.

Austin Community College. Fashion Merchandising. 2000.
http://irt.austincc.edu/IDS/curriculum/PDFs/FashionACAPReport.pdf
This source is reliable because it is from the curriculum at Austin Community College. When I go to college, I am hoping to minor in fashion merchandising. This was a step inside what I will be learning in the future. This book consisted of an overview of 11 units that are taught there. Unit 1: Merchandise Sales helped me to see a plan of how I should be conducting my capstone. It reminded me that I will need to identity trends, make a sales goal, and analyze the history of my buyers. I will apply this by understanding what students at SLA tend to buy more of and how much.

Baker, Michael J, and Susan Hart, editors. The Marketing Book. 7th ed., Routledge, 2016.
https://books.google.com/books?id=nzX7CwAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=marketing&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjfsaeX5vXYAhVS3FMKHR_kCpgQuwUIKDAA#v=onepage&q=marketing&f=false
The Marketing Book consists of 25 chapters that are each written by experts. I read the fourth chapter, The basics of marketing strategy by Robin Wensley. It provided a brief history of marketing and the people who influenced it. The section “Customers, competitors, and channels” informed me about product-market space and patient perspective. Understanding certain terms and the history of marketing has helped me grasp the concept of marketing better. This chapter also discussed analysis and interpretation in marketing strategies. Since I want to study marketing in college, and my capstone also relates to marketing, I believe this was a helpful source to educate myself more.

Close, Angeline, editor. Online Consumer Behavior: Theory and Research in Social Media, Advertising, and E-Tail. Routledge, 2012.
https://books.google.com/books?id=Qi0vezD0sY0C&printsec=frontcover&dq=consumer+behaviour+theory&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwian5W-8_XYAhUD21MKHUY2CicQ6AEIJjAA#v=onepage&q=consumer%20behaviour%20theory&f=false
The title “Online Consumer Behavior: Theory and Research in Social Media, Advertising, and E-Tail” interested me by its title. In the modern age, especially with teenagers, social media is a vital part to everyday life. If I can integrate a modern way of thinking with incorporating social media, I believe this could help my capstone. Section III opened my eyes about the importance of word-of-mouth advertising. Yes, something can be seen online, but then the more the topic is discussed online, it will become a well-known public topic. I hope my capstone will be discussed through word-of-mouth through social media or even in person.

Donaldson, Bill. Sales Management. Third edition. Palgrave Macmillan, 2007.
https://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=Tx8dBQAAQBAJ&oi=fnd&pg=PP1&dq=fashion+merchandising+%22theory+and+practice%22&ots=OwnqENQ_aR&sig=duTkWZ5-KdPvaXnHap-P1jgWWog#v=onepage&q&f=false
Bill Donaldson is a credible author because he is a Research Professor of Marketing at Aberdeen Business School at Robert Gordon University. In chapter 1.5, Marketing and sales strategy, I learned to identify the needs of the customers I am trying to reach. It also taught me that I need to keep consistent communications with my prospective customers. I have already applied part of this to my capstone. I sent out a Google Form asking SLA students what kind of SLA apparel would they want sold. Towards the end of my process, I will repeatedly remind my peers at SLA that new school apparel is coming.

Egan, John. Marketing Communications. 2nd ed., SAGE, 2014.
https://books.google.com/books?id=a9vSAwAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=marketing+and+communications&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjRmJGR6fXYAhUB7FMKHQNBCkMQ6AEIJjAA#v=onepage&q=marketing%20and%20communications&f=false
The author of Marketing Communications, John Egan, is a celebrated marketer with many achievements. The sections “Hierarchy of Effects Models”, “Rational VS. Emotional Appeals”, and “Digital Marketing Theory” connected to my capstone. “Rational VS. Emotional Appeals” helps me understand what the consumer thinks. Sometimes the purchaser buys the “best deal” instead of what’s best for them in the long term situation. I felt like this applied to me in the decision making of picking out certain apparel. For example, a shirt may be cheap, but I have to consider whether or not the consumer would get the best use out of it. Sometimes quality over price will apply to what I have to choose.

Lea-Greenwood, Gaynor. Fashion Marketing Communications. John Wiley & Sons, 2013
https://books.google.com/books?id=oKtA71-oBlAC&printsec=frontcover&dq=fashion+communication&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjRh_LZ5PXYAhVD0FMKHXc6AocQ6AEILDAB#v=onepage&q=fashion%20communication&f=false
Gaynor Lea-Greenwood is a Senior Lecturer in Fashion Marketing and Buying at Manchester Metropolitan University, which makes this book extremely reliable since she is well educated on this topic. I closely read the section titled “How do we get there?”. The title attracted me because this a question I repeatedly ask myself about my capstone. “How do we get there?” focused on getting the word out about a product and how to do so. It suggested using blogger/celebrity endorsement, increased product placement, or sponsoring an event. This helped me with the question of: “How can I promote my capstone?”

Lake, Laura. Consumer Behavior for Dummies. John Wiley & Sons, 2009.
https://books.google.com/books?id=3EPJBgAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=consumer+behavior&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwj-mefbs_bYAhUBrFMKHZs5BxUQ6AEIMjAC#v=onepage&q=consumer%20behavior&f=false
I believe a “for Dummies” book was probably what I should have been reading all along. I chose to read the chapter “Supplying Information and Influencing Perception”. The consumer is a big part of my project. Without the SLA students, my project would not have any basis. I learned from this book that the way that consumers process information is important. Also, the way that I give meaning to my project is also important. If I fail to prove why having new merchandise is important, then no one will be motivated to spend their money buying it and supporting me.
Schnaars, Steven P. Marketing Strategy. Simon and Schuster, 1998.
https://books.google.com/books?id=vvfmcTAGdloC&printsec=frontcover&dq=marketing+strategy&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjfurGW7PXYAhXD6FMKHdMRDyAQ6AEIJjAA#v=onepage&q=marketing%20strategy&f=false
This source is credible because Steven Schnaars is an author, professor, and the department chair in the Department of Marketing at Baruch College. One problem I have come across during my capstone process is the issue of pricing. My big question is: How can I compete with the prices of the old merchandise but also keep the pricing reasonable so the store makes profit to buy more? I decided to read the chapter “Competing on Price” to help with this. While a lot of this chapter was based on large brands with bigger problems than I will faced, Schnaars focused on how consumers care about quality. I know this already, but I will have to keep in it mind for my capstone when choosing the quality of apparel.

Sethna, Zubin, and Jim Blythe. Consumer Behavior . 3rd ed., SAGE, 2016.
https://books.google.com/books?id=e9PUDAAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&dq=consumer+behaviour&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjouJn67PXYAhWE71MKHbfgCOgQ6AEIJjAA#v=onepage&q&f=false
Consumer Behavior contained a lot of basic information on a lot of topics that will apply to me. I already learned about consumers and the theories on how they make decisions of purchasing, so I decided to read the chapter “Promotion”. After I make the apparel, I want to advertise it around school with posters. I feel only making posters might not be the most effective, so I am open to other ad options. This section brought to my attention that I can either nudge my audience in the right direction or persuade. I realized that I need to persuade the SLA students to buy my apparel instead of just pushing them towards it.

Singh, Ankit. Dhayal, Neetu. Shamim, Amir. Consumer Buying Behavior. “International Research Journal of Management Sociology & Humanity”. Vol. 5 no. 12. 2014.
https://s3.amazonaws.com/academia.edu.documents/36888436/2421.pdf?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAIWOWYYGZ2Y53UL3A&Expires=1516807965&Signature=i30UBYSoyuScqqqVUthE6VQHyjM%3D&response-content-disposition=inline%3B%20filename%3DCONSUMER_BUYING_BEHAVIOUR.pdf
Consumer Buying Behavior was a generalization of the concept of consumer behavior. This was my first source, so it was a helpful starting point to introduce consumer behavior. This source is credible because the author and co-authors are employed at the University of Delhi. It discussed the factors of the consumer’s buying decision: cultural, social, personal, and physiological. I hope to reach SLA students on social and personal levels. There was also a chart that described the consumer buying process. I found the “information search” step the most important. I realized that I need some students to buy my clothing in order for a good word to spread. Once a good view of my apparel is going around, then the students are more likely to buy my products because their friends believe it is worth it.

Opoku Kwateng Capstone

Sophomore year during health class Ms. Martin said; “Stress is the biggest problem S.L.A students face.” Two years later when tasked with making a capstone these words would once again come into my mind, and lead to the creation of a Stress Clinic. The purpose of the clinic was to be a place students could come to meditate, relax, and essentially ease their minds. The main principle that fueled the clinic was positive education, the belief that schools should not only focus on the academic success of their students, but also their mental health and well being. The clinic itself taught me that working with people is not easy. Getting people to attend the clinic was difficult. This tied in with the fact that my fellow classmates where also holding their capstone events during the the same time period, added another hurdle for me. All these hardships led to a myriad of meetings where no students attended. The capstone process was one that has taught me numerous things ranging from what stress is on a psychological level to how to teach and hold a group of people’s attention. Even with all the difficulties and frustrations that occured I cannot lie I enjoyed my capstone. Having an opportunity to work on something that interests me was a big and enjoyable change from normal schooling.

For my capstone project I decided to create a rap about my 4 years in high school and Science Leadership Academy’s significance in my life. In my rap I touch on all four years of high school which is freshman, sophomore, junior and senior year. Not only did I rap about what happened in school but I also included some moments in my own personal life outside of school. The most difficult part was most likely trying to find a instrumental to fit my story and adapting to a new rap style. I was going through different types of beats with different flows until I found the perfect beat that fit my story.  I freestyle for fun with my friends all the time. These freestyles are just for fun and the things we say don't make sense, they just rhyme. So trying to transition from that rapping style to a more lyrical rapping style was a hard task for me. I would find myself writing things that did not make any sense, so I would have to delete a lot of my lyrics and creating new ones. Before attempting to make an actual rap, I thought the process would so easy. That was not the case at all, I learned that there is so many aspects into creating a song that actually has a meaning. Aside from the rapping and lyrical part of the song, there was the presentation aspect that was also a long and hard process.
