Q1 Art Portfolio - Heaven Mendez

Artist's Statement
There’s something satisfying finally tackling a bigger challenge within your artwork. Maybe you had to do it once, maybe a thousand times until it finally matched your vision. And it's a lovely feeling knowing that all that work turned into something beautiful, even if it doesn’t always feel that way at first.

Quarter 1 - Artist Statement - Brittany Cooper

Posted by Brittany Cooper in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 12:49 pm

I must say when I signed up for senior art, I had every intention that this class would be BEYOND boring. I seriously had a change of heart. From the time Mrs. Hull gave the a timed schedule to working on each piece I knew this was going to be a good year. Every class period songs are played to inspires the mood of the room. Having art allowed me to share and express my talents not only through paints but musically as well.

Having to mix colors for my ceiling tile would be my biggest challenge. The first piece, The Code Name: Kids Next Door. I used vibrant colors to highlight and make each character stand out. The Charcoal Still Life was a difficult piece because I had to create a line a focus to incorporate all of the piano keys. Glittering the pumpkin was pretty easy. I used a light colored paint to insure that you see the pink glitter but also draw attention to the under tone. The self portrait, was a bit of a challenge. I say this because I have such around face and high check bones, that it was hard for me to get every detail. Making it evenly proportioned was also a tricky part, but I managed to get it done.

My favorite piece of art would be my personal painting, which I did on a ceiling tile. It was a good idea not to prime the ceiling tile because it gave it a natural look. To get the texture of her hair, I dampened a dishwashing sponge. Dipping the sponge in paint, in a circular motion, I created the highlighted curls in her hair.  I must say when I signed up for senior art, I had every intention that this class would be BEYOND boring. I seriously had a change of heart. From the time Mrs. Hull gave the a timed schedule to working on each piece I knew this was going to be a good year. Marking Period 1 Art

Posted by Avery Monroe in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 12:35 pm

For the first quarter in Senior Art, we had a couple pieces that we got to create. The most important thing to remember while doing these pieces was that we had to make it our own, put our own spin on it. There was a lot of space for making our own decisions on what we wanted to do. Everything that I made was something that I thought was. I created things that I cared about. I have never really had to do anything like this before, so I think that all of this art that I created was me just having fun.

Senior Art, Quarter One Portfolio

Posted by Desmond O'Donovan in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 12:31 pm

In this class we had a lost of works of art that we had to create, but the subjects of these works were largely up to us. These pieces exhibit a variety of mediums and artistic styles. Creating this portfolio allowed me to step out of my artistic comfort zone. I did some work with pencil like I'm used to, but also worked with paint, charcoal and pastel. i also created things that i was used to creating, but not used to calling art, like my costume and jack-o-lantern.

Any opportunity I had, I included animals in my art work. When I draw independently, I usually draw animals. I feel focussing on drawn people limits myself to just one species. Their's something mysterious and unknown about animals that makes me want to capture them in art. I think my animal art reveals something about animals, more than just what they look like, but other aspects about them. I am proud of my pencil self portrait though, but that's because I have a lot of experience with pencil, and I've drawn myself kore than I've drawn any other person, so it is easier.

Quarter 1 Senior Art

Posted by Sattera Mark in Senior Art - Hull - D on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 5:46 pm

This first quarter of art has been good and has given me an outlet to express my creativity through art. Art class for me has been a time to work and relax unlike my other class which are more difficult and stressful. In art class I have learned some more history through assignments and have learned some new techniques. Through art class my painting skill have improved as well as my ability to draw.

In art class we had multiple assignments. We had complete a painted ceiling tile, a sketch, self portrait, charcoal drawing, jack lanterns, and a drawing of our choice. These assignments were fun to do unlike tackling all the school work and college preparation that comes along with senior year.

Out of all the assignments I did so far this year my favorites are the ceiling tiles. They’re my favorites because I had the freedom to put on the tiles whatever I wanted to . Therefore I got to paint my favorite two cartoon characters, Spongebob and Woody and have them displayed in a place where everyone in the art room can see.

Quarter 1 Senior Art

Posted by Pilar Carroll in Senior Art - Hull - D on Thursday, November 12, 2015 at 9:00 am

This quarter in senior art has been extremely fun. I am happy to say that I look forward to this class on days when I have it. Senior art is an outlet to let go of all my stress, and focus on creating something nice. We learn how to mix colors for different shades, to blend and create shadows, and we learn this independently, so it feeds out drive.
This quarter we had multiple assignments: ceiling tile, drawing/painting, charcoal still life, jack-o-lantern/ bats, and a self portrait. We could do these projects at any time, as long as it was done by the end of the quarter. I started with the ceiling tile, then self portrait, jack-o-lantern, still life, then painting.I had two favorite pieces.
My first favorite piece is my ceiling tile. In my tile, I painted the Drake Nothing Was The Same album cover on it. I worked the longest on this project, because it was hard for me to mix the skin, and there was a lot of blending with this painting. It took me about a month to finish it, and even though it is not perfect, it am very proud of the effort I put into this project.
My second favorite piece is my jack-o-lantern. I did this project on the eve of Halloween with my six year old cousin. It was a fun bonding experience, and I think that I made my most interesting, and intricate pumpkin of my life so far. I decided to carve a big pumpkin eating a smaller pumpkin. When hanging out candy, a kid old me it was a pac man eating another pac man.

Senior Art Q1

Posted by Esperanza Gonzalez in Senior Art - Hull - D on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at 8:40 am

During this first quarter in Ms. Hull’s senior art class, everything has been excellent. In this quarter we had to create  a ceiling tile, self portrait, charcoal still lives, jack o lantern, bats, and our own painting.  All of the pieces were given 100% of my time and effort, which can clearly be seen through the work. I believe that this quarter has been my best yet. I loved making every single piece because I did everything that I wanted.

My favorite piece of art work was definitely the tiger picture. I really dedicated a great amount of time on it. I decided to use black and white because I wanted the viewer to experience a special mood. I wanted to make him look mysterious yet at the same very interesting. I’m very proud of tiger I created! I love animals and this has been one of the best drawing I have made.

Q1 Senior Art

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Senior Art - Hull - D on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 10:04 pm

Welcome to Sydne’s Senior Art... This year I’m in the senior art class which means I have two more extra classes to work on my art.  My junior year I enjoyed art so much that I came back to improve my skills. After reading the section we read of Art history I wanted to push myself more to be a better artist. So that means putting more time into each of my art pieces, mixing colors and experimenting with different colors. Using texture and shapes and just going outside the lines. So for the first quarter I tried mixing new colors and painting with texture.

Since we are still getting back into the flow of school and senior year I wanted to be calm and relax, and just enjoy art so I did. For my ceiling tiles I did my all around the world tiles and added Philadelphia and Brazil. I wasn’t really ready for halloween so I didn’t carve a pumpkin like last year but I did dress up with some friends. It was my first time using chalk so it was a experience for me. I did a water lily because when sunlight hits it in certain angles they can make pretty shadows on the water and that was the focus with the chalk, to make shadows and use different shades of black. I had fun for my first time, it was a little messy and hard to get off my fingers but I’d like to try art with chalk again. My self portrait was simple, I picked one of my favorite pictures of myself and just rolled with it.

My favorite piece, and the piece I’m most proud of is the Pocahontas painting. This was a challenge for me because we didn’t have the shades of purple, and blues and greens so I winged it. I noticed that mixing watercolors made the different shades of purples and blues and it came out nicely. It’s been awhile since I’ve used water colors so there was a lot of trial and error. I went against using blues for the tree because it looked to dark with the background so I mixed blue and greens. After the long process of mixing, drying and dabbing the extra water I loved the way the painting came out better than I could imagine.  Overall quarter one work was chill. I’m looking forward to the rest of the year and see what new techniques I’ll learn. The point of this class was to become a better artist and expand on what I already know. I hope you check the next 3 quarters to see how I progressed in art.
