Lie detection, can neuroscience identify lies?

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Science And Society - Best - E on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 7:43 pm

Since the beginning of criminology, police officers and detectives have been trying to come up with  methods of detecting lies, stories and fibs. .It wasn't until the early 1920’s polygraphs have been used as an interrogation tool with criminals. The US law enforcement and federal government agencies such as the FBI and the CIA have been using them. This test works in a easy way, when someone lies it makes your heart race. It makes you pant, it drives up your blood pressure and in some extreme cases it makes you drip sweat. A polygraph machine detect lies by looking for signs of these physiological changes. But to often there have been times where the these test don’t actually work. Scientist have been coming up with ways that enhance and improve the way these test work by using neuroscience.

“Scientists believe that a lie is made up of two parts: a person must create the lie and also withhold the truth”

After 9/11 the American government has become highly interested in procuring a sure-fire method of spotting liars. The American military has a whole department, the Department of Defense Polygraph Institute the need for a better test came along. These proponents believe the future impact of neuroscience “will be inevitable, dramatic, and will fundamentally alter the way the law does business” In this case there’s always going to be people who agree with polygraph test and people who think it’s a whole bunch of crap. Using neuroscience, scientist have come up with ways to use Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to looks inside the brain instead of tracking outside measures of anxiety like changes in pulse, blood pressure or respiration. fMRI’s get the point straight across, you ask a question and if you lie the test shows it. Detection accuracy was claimed to be as high as 90% compared to a purported 70% for polygraphs making them more reliable and fast moving. There would be no need to use lawyers that would switch up your words and evidence. While some see this the best thing that could happen, and a bridge to a whole new world of lie detection and criminology others think this is just a waste of time.

Scientist believe the fMRI machines will only confuse results  “In theory, it takes more neural activity to lie than tell the truth because you have to construct a narrative, so the extent of neural activity can be relevant in determining whether you’re lying,” said Andrea Roth, an assistant professor at Berkeley Law.  In order to image an area where there is activity, a thought has to be made, and an image taken a couple of seconds afterward (because the oxygen conversion is not instantaneous). Stanford University’s Anthony Wagner decided to do a test where laboratory studies involve instruction to tell a low-stakes lie about an action they recently performed. However, in the real world, lies are self-generated, often high risk and emotionally charged, and lie detection may occur years after the event in question. This process must be repeated a couple of times to be able to filter out false positives. In the end there is no hard data to show that we can actually detect lies with great accuracy. We would all love it if neuroscience could distinguish between these true and false memories until then cops and detective will still to polygraph test.

fMRI’s are not a perfect science, and they have a long way to go before they can be perfect. I feel like with a good mixture between the test, lawyers and great evidence court cases will be easy to solve and won’t be hard to put people behind bars. There’s going to be a lot of work done and a lot of time put in before we can get anywhere to a point where test can really tell who’s lying and who’s telling the truth. We shouldn’t treat fMRI’s as if it’s the only thing that can and should be used in the court, we should seen more like another piece of evidence that could be icing on the cake to completely the case.

Thinking In Color Capstone

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Capstone - Martin - Wed on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 10:05 am
Thinking in Color is my last big project at SLA before I graduate and move on to college. For my capstone I originally wanted to paint a mural outside the school, so people can really get a feel for what SLA is really about, because we’re more than a science school. Due to codes and rules it would have been easier if I painted inside the school. So with talking to my partner in crime we are doing a mini course for freshman and we will be painting a mural on the ceiling of our cafeteria.  For my capstone I ran a mini course with Britt A. and we thought freshman about the art of science. During the course we explained how famous artist used science to paint and use techniques like optical illusion, making even lines, how to make paint and colors look the way they do and in the end they painted murals. We had two sets of mini courses each one running for, four weeks. The first one was painted on ceiling tiles in the middle of the caffettiera and we learned from that, that it’s harder to paint because you have the take the tiles down and put them back up and that process took longer than expected. The second mini course we decided to paint a wall because people would be able to see it better and there wouldn’t be holes in the ceiling where the tiles would be. Throughout the capstone I learned that painting take more time than the other kids before me made it seem, especially because we were still teaching the kids, and we had designated painting times. The best part about the capstone is we donated all the paint we didn't use and extra paint brushes back to the school and the art program.

MDMA The Party Drug

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Science And Society - Best - E on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at 11:39 pm
Science:
MDMA also known as Molly or a stronger version of  Ecstasy or even Scooby Snacks was created by Anton Kollisch who wanted to make a pill or drug that could help soldiers with PTSD and abnormal bleeding, but the strong was really too strong . It made the soldiers happier but at the same time they couldn't think right. BY the 1940’s-50’s, mixed with other chemicals and ground down into a powder that turned into a easy popping pill, or heated to be shot using a needle MDMA became a popular party drug. People who take MDMA or Molly found that they were a lot happier.  Your brain floods with at least three or more neurotransmitters like, Serotonin, Dopamine or even Norepinephrine that gave you more energy and could focus more. At the same time your senses would be heightened such as seeing and hearing clearer (hence why it’s used a lot in clubs and concerts). Some consider it as a world of psychedelic colors. When taken as a pill it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to enter your system or bloodstream and the effects begin. It last about 3-6 hours depending how it was made and the dosage. Even though there are positive effects from using Molly there’s always negatives. Impaired judgment, False sense of affection, Confusion, Depression and Anxiety, Sleep problems and insomnia, Paranoia, Muscle tension, Faintness and chills or swelling the common Nausea and if Molly is taken often it can lead to usage of other and stronger drugs.

Society:

Since MDMA is a party drug it is commonly used by high school students, college students and some adults.  Because it is so cheap ranging from $25-40, 1 out of every 10 college students have experimented with Molly and  98% of college students who had used ecstasy had also used marijuana. Sometimes MDMA is replaced with PMA which is another cheaper version to look like Molly but because each dose isn’t as strong you buy and use more making it easier to OD. People should also know the difference between Molly and Ecstasy even though they both come from the same chemical compound. Ecstasy is mixed with other drugs or chemicals like rat poison, bath salts, baking soda, LSD. Compared to Molly which is straight MDMA they both a lethal but Ecstasy could be considered cheaper. Because teenagers are still going to be partying and going out there’s been an increase of Molly consumption (especially in the US).

Self:

I did research on MDMA for my chemistry BM I wanted to share some of the information I found out. I had to do more research on what’s really happening in the brain that makes the pill works the way it does. I like parties and it’s could be warned about what’s out there and what people are really getting into. It’s something like teenagers do dabble in a lot of things during college and Molly could be one of them. We’re all going to college soon and it’s good to know what’s what.

Q3 Artist Statement

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Senior Art - Hull - D on Sunday, April 10, 2016 at 9:10 pm

If we’re still doing the whole real world lesson in quarter four this will be my final assignments for Senior year art. These assignments really pushed me outside of my comfort zone and I really enjoyed it. It actually made me think about making something that I wouldn’t normally do (adding real details, and using colors, using oil pastels) and something that’s not simple. I got so into the art I actually finished the main assignments early and did little ones on the side. . It was a really good chill, relax class where you could be open about who you are what type of artist you are. It was fun walking into class and just going straight to work not worrying about anything else. I’m going to miss senior art a lot, there’s never going to be a class like this and I'm always going to remember the memories I made in it.

My favorite assignments was the mosaic and all the water colors. One I love working with water colors, especially because they’re easy to blend with and make bolder better colors. You can use salt and cement and tape to make texture and clouds and it’s just fun to work with. The mosaic was a challenge because you had to cut smaller pieces to make your bigger piece. In the end it was worth the sticky fingers and the little paper cuts, my coffe cups came out real nice and it was really worth it. The hardest assignment had to be making a wire sculpture out of paper clips. It was the worst, I cut myself a couple of times and the little paper clips weren’t cutting it. It was a new experience for me and I learned and grew as a person from it. I made a crown out of the paper clips because it was girly enough like me and every princess needs a crown.

In the end I’m really proud of all the assignments I turned in the last three quarters and it was worth the time and energy I spent. Senior art has really taught me to be creative and think outside the box. I am really looking forward to the last quarter where Ms.Hull will be teaching us about the real world and what happens when you leave the comforts of high school. ‘Ve been waiting for lessons like this since the beginning, I think there should be mandatory classes in highschool that teach you how to pay bills and write checks, and be independent. Since we’re leaving for college soon it’s going to be a good learning experience for all of us.

Q2 Art Portfolio

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Senior Art - Hull - D on Monday, January 25, 2016 at 8:05 pm

For quarter two we took things a little slow and we didn’t have as much work as we did the first quarter. Instead we learned and practiced some new techniques, including collaging, block printing and sketching using math. It was fun to go out my art comfort zone, it got me working harder and putting in more effort. Besides art history we have a mini lesson in the history of art and music experimenting with different artist and how the vibes of the music affected the way we worked in class. We did have our silly days but it was fun learning about older artist from the 80’s- 90’s.

The most challenging project this quarter was the fern, because there’s a lot of details in each leaf and that takes a lot of time, energy and patience, which is something I don’t have. When it comes to art if it’s not my way or something I’m good at stray against it because it’s out of my comfort zone, and I’m not really an artist. There were times where I did want to give up and not finish the drawing because it felt like the leaves were never ending. I would finish one and realise I had like 20 more to finish. It was never ending and I really really wanted to give and chalk the whole thing. In the end I’m glad I didn’t give up because my fern came out okay. It wasn’t my best work but it wasn’t my worst.

The thing that stuck out the most was the Golden Ratio Collage which was basically a big swirl with nine sections that have to measure a certain length but still be in equal ratio. It was hard to understand at first but after some other examples from google I understood it more and it became my best work. I used an elephant head that matched up with the swirl and because elephants are grey I wanted to use a colorful background that would make the dull head stand out more. I used already cut colored pieces of paper and collaged them into each section of the golden ratio so you could see which section started and ended where. I enjoyed block printing because I’ve done it before, but this time was fun because we used styrofoam instead of a rubber plate. I choose a panda sleeping at night because it was supposed to be part of nature, and who doesn’t love panda’s?  I stuck with darker colors because it’s supposed to be at night, and most pandas have darker colored fur so it just seemed right.

Q1 Senior Art

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Senior Art - Hull - D on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 10:04 pm

Welcome to Sydne’s Senior Art... This year I’m in the senior art class which means I have two more extra classes to work on my art.  My junior year I enjoyed art so much that I came back to improve my skills. After reading the section we read of Art history I wanted to push myself more to be a better artist. So that means putting more time into each of my art pieces, mixing colors and experimenting with different colors. Using texture and shapes and just going outside the lines. So for the first quarter I tried mixing new colors and painting with texture.

Since we are still getting back into the flow of school and senior year I wanted to be calm and relax, and just enjoy art so I did. For my ceiling tiles I did my all around the world tiles and added Philadelphia and Brazil. I wasn’t really ready for halloween so I didn’t carve a pumpkin like last year but I did dress up with some friends. It was my first time using chalk so it was a experience for me. I did a water lily because when sunlight hits it in certain angles they can make pretty shadows on the water and that was the focus with the chalk, to make shadows and use different shades of black. I had fun for my first time, it was a little messy and hard to get off my fingers but I’d like to try art with chalk again. My self portrait was simple, I picked one of my favorite pictures of myself and just rolled with it.

My favorite piece, and the piece I’m most proud of is the Pocahontas painting. This was a challenge for me because we didn’t have the shades of purple, and blues and greens so I winged it. I noticed that mixing watercolors made the different shades of purples and blues and it came out nicely. It’s been awhile since I’ve used water colors so there was a lot of trial and error. I went against using blues for the tree because it looked to dark with the background so I mixed blue and greens. After the long process of mixing, drying and dabbing the extra water I loved the way the painting came out better than I could imagine.  Overall quarter one work was chill. I’m looking forward to the rest of the year and see what new techniques I’ll learn. The point of this class was to become a better artist and expand on what I already know. I hope you check the next 3 quarters to see how I progressed in art.

Q4 Art Portfolio

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Art Advanced - Hull - a2 on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 12:51 am
Quarter 4 we were allowed to pick and make our own assignments with a rule that they should each take you a hour or longer. I wanted to go all out on my art projects I wanted to include all my art talents into each project. This included painting, collaging and teamwork. To make my projects fun I wanted to have a theme so each of my projects included newspaper in the theme. I was either a news paper background, a somewhat comic from a newspaper or it was a story from a newspaper and each piece of work can tell a different story like newspapers do,

My first project was basic shapes and collaging I used the red colors as fire to represent the many forest fires that we're killing our own environment with. This piece involved water coloring and the splatter technique to get the feeling of fire. The glitter might be a little hard to see but it's supposed to show the glow fires have. The second project shows the beauty in our environment, I wanted painting to stick out so I painted them black and added accents of color to give the eye something to look at. It's the good and bad of nature.

I had so much fun with my first ceiling tile I wanted to do more. I made one big one and two little ones. The first one had a twist on an old 80's comic, I wanted to use bolder colors than the original comic it took a little longer to get the details in the face and the tear drop. I was proud of the way mines came out especially the girls hair. The little ceiling tiles are two of the few places I want to travel to because everyone does a Philly skyline I wanted to leave the borders of America and adventure out. Tokyo and Johannesburg are beautiful places so they were fun to draw and paint.

Overall I had a lot of fun with my art assignments and look forward to creating a lot more. I couldn't have done it without the help of my lovely art partners in crime who helped cut out the many many pieces of paper for each background. Gave me the motivation to paint and even gave great feedback. I hope you enjoy my four lovely master pieces.

                  Thank You

Dominican Republic Taking Back the Land

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in American History - Jonas - C on Friday, March 27, 2015 at 11:03 pm
In this infographic I will talked about The Dominican Republic and it’s foreign policy with The United States. The U.S did not have specific reasons why they wanted to be part of The Dominican Republic besides the new economy they could have bring in and money. Overall after all the love and hate between the two it worked out and it benefited all.

Quarter 2 Middle Art

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Art Advanced - Hull - a2 on Friday, January 23, 2015 at 8:19 pm

This quarter was fun for me. It was a lot more hands on interactive with nature and I found out that I can actually draw better than I normally do.. This is the part where I say that I’ve grown as an artist or that I see me growing every time I draw when really I actually do. Compared to last quarter where something had to take me at least a certain amount to draw, that takes away from the art of things. When I draw I want to feel free and sometimes the best art doesn’t take the longest. Like the photography since I took the photography class last year and it opened my eyes to something new.. I just came naturally to me so editing was easier it’s whether or not to saturate the picture or take away the saturation and color and make it black and white. I am most proud of the picture for the hanging tree.. The song is deep by itself and it needed a deep picture. Like last quarter I’m proud of my work the more I draw the more I feel like I do grow as an artist, my confidence with my drawings has increased. I’m a looking forward to the last 2 quarters and what they have to hold for me.

Q1 Art Medium Level Sydne

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Art Advanced - Hull - a2 on Friday, November 14, 2014 at 11:21 pm

This quarter I decided to take things a little slower so I was in the medium category that wasn't easy and wasn't hard. Each week or weeks we got a new assignment that tought us new things about art and process. This quarter I went out of my comfort zone and tried a lot more things I would never do. The self portrait was the hardest because eyes and noses are the hardest thing on the face for me. Looking in a mirror and trying to add the little details to everything. My favorite part of this quarters art was my ceiling tile. Since I came to SLA and saw the ceiling tiles I knew I wanted to make one. In the end I was really proud of my tile, it was a huge art accomplishment for me.

I can't say I'm a artist because I'm not. Everytime I draw or paint I learn something new that expands my skills in the art room.. I'll admit that I am proud of my work but I wish I could do better.. I know, I compare my work to others which discourages me because it seems like everyone is doing better than me and I'm over here like I drew a circle. But everytime I draw something I learn to love what I do and I grow from every experience.

I learned that it's okay to make mistakes and that's why you draw lightly in pencil. You can simply erase and keep it moving. I made so many mistakes drawing everything from my 3 hour sketch to the self portrait. I actually went through a whole eraser throughout this whole process and it's okay. If you don't like the way something you drew looked it's okay to start over. Who knows maybe famous artist from all over the world had the same issue I did. Practice makes perfect well not perfect but better and eventually better becomes great work and great work becomes a work of art that you're really proud of.

I don't really have a lot to say about my art because I really don't like talking about myself and my work, I rather get constructive criticism about my work that will help me grow as person in a advanced art class. Well I hope you enjoy my art

"The Sweet Dead Life" by Joy Prebel

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in English 3 - Rami - D on Tuesday, November 4, 2014 at 10:22 pm

When you hear don’t judge a book by it’s cover, sometimes you can sometimes you can’t. The title it can tell you what you’re going to read about, other times it’s an important hint that will help you solve the puzzle in the book, in this case this book doesn’t do neither. The Sweet Dead Life by Joy Prebel will have you questioning if you can trust anyone, even the people who sell you shoes. You read the journal entries of 14 year old Jenna Samuels whose life isn’t the best. Her mom spends all day in bed, her father is missing and her her older brother tries to keep the family together but he is too high to focus on anything. To add to all of Jenna’s stress she becomes sick, to a point where she collapses and her brother tries to rush her to the hospital but instead ends up crashing the car. Jenna wakes up to her brother who doesn’t have any scars and he’s glowing, almost a heavenly glow. Jenna comes to realize that her brother did not survive the accident and that she’s not sick but poised. The sent her brother back to help Jenna find the person who has it out for her.

The Sweet Dead Life is Prebel’s 4th book out of 6, the first three were part of the 3 book Anastasia series, and her newest one coming in 2015 Finding Paris. Prebel’s preference for writing is fantasy and mistery following stories of strong female characters. Mystery is her favorite genre because it’s fun to write but it brought life to her simple Texas life. Many of her favorite authors were mystery writters which encourage her to write her own stories. Her writing like most authors isn’t the ordinary stuff that talks about girl meets boy and falls in love or vampires, fairies and monsters, she tells stories using myths and legends that go back to the 1900’s. In this book Prebel talks about angles and normally angles are more a religious belief that when you die and you were forgiven for your sins you got to heaven. Some people believe in this others don’t and instead of Prebel trying to push that angels are real and we should believe in them she puts a fun twist on them that has you saying, “I would have never thought of that”

The first time I read this book the second one was not out yet, but it now out and I am looking forward to reading the second book. Like many mystery series if the writer doesn’t catch your attention you get bored and you want to skip to the end of the book. This book has it’s moments where you want to skip ahead but I advice not to do this beascue you will miss important parts that if you don’t know it you will be confused, and the ending will confuse you more, it’s one of those endings if you don’t know what happened you won’t understand it. Not like many books I have read in the past the ending of this book actually does the book justice. It answers all the questions brought up in the book about Jenna’s dad and where he has disappeared to, Jenna’s poising and why it happened to her and the truth behind the car accident. It’s like watching a crime show, the writer gives you clues to solve the crime you get to know the bad guys of the show and you guess who the killer was, but with this book there’s more than one culprit and you won’t know until you keep reading. The Book keeps you engaged and gets you thinking if the crime is a lot more complicated than your simple poisoning.

The Sweet Dead Life is a great book for people who aren’t afraid of trying something new. It talks about topics some people might not believe in and it does have few sexual references, and the plot line could be boring to people who aren’t willing to wait for the best parts.  so I recommend it for people 15 and older and maybe mature 14 year olds who will take this book seriously and who will take their time to read and take in the books details. The book cost me about $18 because it was the hardcover but it was worth it. And when you get to those parts it will leave you speechless, it was worth the wait. I wish they would make a movie about it because I would love to see the way they portray each character. The Sweet Dead Life will have you thinking maybe it wouldn’t be so bad becoming an A-Word.

For my creative I re-did the cover of the book. I felt like the original cover was a little dull for such a good book, and it just left the book looking like another boring book about death ans coming to life. Let's face it people do judge books by it's cover and if it doesn't grab the readers eye one way or another they'll look straight past it on the shelf. So with a little bit of help from photoshop, google images and the details from the book I’ve created a different cover that suits the book.

Core Values from SLA From the water filter lab
-Inquiry: The question was can we make safe water filters with organic materials that are all natural and safe for the environment.
-Research:  I researched what material filters water more from stones, dirt, grass and sand.. Then researched the best way to build a safe clean water filter that would be easy to  carry around and would still be fun.
-Collaboration: I worked with my partner Brittany A. and David to make the filter. We each brought in one water bottle and made the filter.
-Presentation: I decorated my bottle to be a little silly with it, but with presentation we talked to the class about the findings we found about which filter worked better. Which was the sand and stone filter the water came out cleaner than when it started
-Reflection: This could be considered a deflection but , in the end we compared the pH levels of the water.

“Life moves fast. As much as you can learn from your history, you have to move forward.”-Eddie Vedder. Eddie has a point we do learn from our past and we learn from our mistakes but it’s always good to move forward and learn more about yourself. In Mr.Block’s history class we learned more and more about the worlds past and even ourselves. You learn more about yourself when you learn more about your past. We had many units where we got to discover more about ourselves.

I learned that I have a knack for writing. I would express myself in our journal prompts and really go into detail how I felt about the topic of the day. One of our journal prompts  was about fighting for what you believe in and whether you would sacrifice yourself my answer “I mean I don’t really believe in anything enough to die for it... I guess I can say I would die to save my family or loved ones, because they mean the world to me.. But if a random person asked me to take a bullet for believing in the chupacabra I’d be like, you got the wrong one.”After writing that I development a new idea. As we went deeper into our units and learned more about history my opinion on a lot of things change. I felt one way on something but after doing more research and understanding more I would the complete opposite of what I did. Like the Keystone XL Pipeline at first I was up for the pipeline because it would make more jobs, but after our pipeline unit I learned that this pipeline would not only be relocating a lot of people whose homes are in the path, but it it leaks it could a lot of animals and ruin the environment. I wrote three monologues about the Pipeline teaching people about the dangers of the pipeline, here’s a sample of one of the monologues

“Dear Mr.President,

If you do read this, I want you to know that it’s time to make a decision. This pipeline that’s supposed to “help” America is actually tearing us apart. My dad was one of the many protestors who was thrown in jail the other day. He is facing a lot of time for standing up for what he believes in. This pipeline, if made will force a lot of people out their homes My dad was standing up for those people who don’t have a voice. Their voices wouldn’t be heard if it wasn’t for him. I’m just asking for your help, can you just let my dad go please? You knew what it’s like not having a dad around. All I want is mine. I hope you actually read this and help me.

Margaret Brownwood”

One of my favorite units that I really related to was our unit on female scientist and the empowerment of females all over the world. Where we discovered that women all over the world don’t have the same rights as men, and that we don’t have enough females in the science field who make a difference in people's lives. I wrote on one of our worksheet’s from The Cyberschoolbus site that “If women are empowered they’ll start going to school, and we can have more empowered females in the world” and if we have more empowered women maybe we can be seen more than just sex symbols.  I wrote more on that in my journal entry number 46 “Girls were born to be pretty and sometimes used as sex symbols while guys were born to be masculine and be the breadwinner for the family.... When really it doesn’t matter who does what..... well society doesn’t think that”

An important get to know yourself unit was Revolutions and Colonialism. In class we talked about the French and Haitian revolution, the Colonialism of the Aztecs in 1520’s, the Egyptian revolution of 201, The Industrial Revolution. During these units we would have mock trials were you get to play a certain character to defend yourself against the people who did you greasy. During the trials you do background information on the certain person you got and you put yourself in their shoes and it’s was interesting learning about past lives that affect you know.

“The vast universe is a wheel circle of life, birth, death and rebirth”  -quote from sacred text reading, and that’s how our history is people went through what they did so I could be on the path that I’m on now, which is going to school and getting my education to better myself. “Things can happen all at once and little changes can make a huge difference” my response to Science Revolution Worksheet. And I feel as those putting myself in their shoes, I grew a better appreciation for the people who did what they did, but at the same time I learned from their mistakes and how not to repeat history again good or bad.

Overall Mr.Block’s class was interesting.... His teaching was hands on wich made a real impression on me. It was a comfortable learning environment where we could debate anything for hours and still not get out point across, (which has happened many times). We got to express ourselves through journaling and iMovies and songs and at the end of the day we still learned about our past. It wasn’t your average history class with any average history teacher.

La Leyenda de Mimzy

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Spanish 4 - Manuel - E on Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at 2:09 am

Still Life with Skull

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Spanish 4 - Manuel - E on Friday, May 2, 2014 at 9:03 pm

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Spanish 4 - Manuel - E on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 8:39 pm

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Spanish 4 - Manuel - E on Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 10:12 pm

Un línea que atrapa mi atención es “The land we stand on, every inch of it stolen.

Color Revolution

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in World History - Block - B on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 11:17 pm

In this unit we traveled across seas (not literally) to learn about revolutions all over the world.. We talked about the Arab Spring and Revolutions all over Africa. There was always a common topic of people being tired of being treated poorly by their rulers. Their rulers made promises to make better lives for the people but never did. To change the way the police force would treat the people (they did but the police force was just a corrupt). Enough was enough there was time for changed to be made. changes that actually did some good for the people. We would discuss about what makes a good revolution and what actually is a revolution. As a class we agreed a revolution is a change (good or bad), that can impact a way of life. For our benchmark is was our job to decide what makes a great revolution.

I decided to focus on the arts and colors. Me being who I am I feel like the news always portrays the bad sides of revolutions (violence and death ). The media can talks a little about the positive side or fun sides to revolutions but that doesn't get views.. People like drama (as long as it’s not theirs). So I wanted to do something a little more uplifting like bright colors and arts. My question was how does the arts keep a revolution from not falling apart? I will answer my question and hopefully brighten your day.

Our City, Our Vets por Willis Humphrey y Phillip Adams

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Spanish 4 - Manuel - E on Friday, January 3, 2014 at 1:36 pm

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Spanish 4 - Manuel - E on Tuesday, November 12, 2013 at 9:02 pm

A mi me gusta cantar, jugar fútbol y puedo cocinar.

Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in World History - Block - B on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 8:36 pm

In Mr. Blocks world history class we were learning about The Keystone XL pipeline. This unit was interesting because before this class I never knew there was supposed to even be an pipeline. The Keystone pipeline is a 1,179 mile pipe that will transfer over 830 million barrels of oil from Canada to oil companies in America. In class we read articles and  watched videos from both sides of the pipeline. The first was about the people who invented the pipeline, they said the pipeline will create more than 20 million new construction jobs.  It will give America independence when it comes to oil transportation. Which meant we wouldn’t have to depend on oil  companies across the sea. Then the counter video was about the protesters who were against the pipeline being built. They said that if this pipe is built it will cause more pollution to be put in the air which can increase greenhouse gasses that causes global warming. Another important reason of why the pipe shouldn’t be built was because if it leaks it can pollute the water sources that are near the pipe and it could kill any living being  who drinks the water.

Later we had discussions about how we feel about the pipeline. I think it would be a great idea to have the pipeline but in order to get the oil we would have to dig up miles and miles of land to get the oil needed. We are already polluting our land and if we use for resources than can be reproduced eventually we’ll have nothing left and we’ll have to start depending on other companies again. It’s a good idea but America isn’t ready for the responsibility of a pipeline.

What am I supposed to say? Hey guys, guess what; Our house is in the way of that new pipeline. TransCanada now owns our land and there’s nothing we can do about it. But this money

(she looks at the check TransCanada wrote her)

We could get a new home and start fresh. But my kids, Timmy just started high school and poor little Katie Ann she’s just startin’ to walk. It would kill Timmy having to start at a new school again, it’s too much. And my folks! I need to be close to them, Ma’ needs someone to look after her I would have to move her too.

(starts to tear up but her husband walks in)

John I’m glad you’re home. I have to tell you somethin’ we have to move. I was called to court because that new gas company needs our land to build that big pipe of theirs, that’s why. ...No we can’t fight it, it’s happening all over Denton. I heard the Jentsons from down the block tried to fight the company last year  they’re just now getting done the case, they lost the case and a lot of money.

We have the kids to think about. Especially Katie, it’s hard enough that you’re working days and nights. If I try to fight this all she’ll see is Timmy. They did write us a check. It’s $655,332.19 (six hundred fifty-five thousand three hundred and thirty three dollars) it’s about $200,000 (two hundred thousand)less than what our house’s worth. What do you mean $655,332.19 isn’t enough for our land? You know those people are  tighter than bark on a tree . I’m surprised we got that much money. With that money we could find us a nice new house where my folks could live with us and everythang. John they’re taking our house whether you like it or not. It’s hard for me too, doctors are needed everywhere but it’s hard finding a decent job for female accountants.

(Lilly says while holding back her tears)

Come hell or high waters, I’m moving, you can stay here but I’m taking my kids and folks with me. We’re going far away from Texas its pipeline problems. I reckon’ this is it for us. I’ll go back tomorrow and tell them we’ll be tak'n'ta money. I know it’s gon’ be hard but we’ll make it through. For now we gotta get the yougin’s packing and start lookin for a new home. One where our kids will be safe, and Ma’ and Pa’ can stay with us and we’ll have a nice neighborhood, away from that nasty pipe. Now it’s time for me to start cookin’. Timmy should be home any minute now and Katie should be wakin up from her nap. Go on’ now, go get our daughter and Imma start gettin’ fixin’  dinner.

The Protesters Daughter

(In the Brownwood’s home upstairs in Margaret's room)

MARGARET

(Slams the door shut & grabs the picture of her and her dad from her dresser  and sits on her bed)

Ugh dad you went and did it again. But this time you got yourself in a lot of trouble and who knows how long you’ll be this time. I know this pipe means a lot to you, but don’t mom and i  mean something too? You’re always at a protest trying to stop the pipeline from being built. You’re never home anymore and if you are it’s pipeline this, pipeline that. You’d think I’d be used to this. You’ve been protesting against everything since I was 4, but it’s still hard to not having you around. I just want my dad back.

(Knock on the door it’s Margarets mom Margaret puts the frame down)

Yes mom? Yeah I heard about dad, how long is he in for this time? Wait what do you mean 2-3 years? He was just standing outside the gates I was with him the whole time. He did what? Why would he ever do something like that? Daddy would never do anything to hurt someone especially something that dangerous

(sounds a little more angry)

I know it’s dangerous mom, you don’t have to keep telling me. This pipe is slowly killing our environment. Don’t you see all over America, TransCanada is moving people out of their homes?

They are taking their land and all you can say is it’s too dangerous for me to fight for what I believe in?  You’re supposed to support your family not hold them back. Why would I write a letter? What would that even do? It’s not like the president reads it anyway. He has so much to deal with that he sends out computer letters saying thank you for your time writting this letter and other b.s that makes you think he actually cares about you.... Grounded!!! Mom I’m sorry but you can’t ground me ,there’s another protest tomorrow. I need to show up in honor of dad.... Fine then but don’t expect me down for dinner. Ugh she just doesn’t understand. Well I have nothing better to do. Maybe writing the letter won’t kill me

(she grabs her notebook and pen)

Dear Mr.President,

Acceptance

(TransCanada company Calgary, Alberta Canada the room where the pipe is held in)

PIPE

My name is Steve, Steve Pipeline the 3rd.

All my life I was raised to believe I could change the world. I would be creating over 20,000 new construction jobs. I would be creating $58.6 million in new taxes.  Everything would be great. I would be giving America independence by transferring over 830,000 barrels of oil transferred across 1,179 miles of metal. In 2011 everyone was happy about me, there were award ceremonies, and news announcements life was good.  Every time someone drove by me or walked past I was praised. Everyone was my friend and everyone loved me.

(stops and takes a long breath)

Two years later when I came to America, these so called tree huggers said I was bad for the environment. Can you believe that? Me bad for the environment!! They said if leaked, which is only supposed to leak 2 times every 10 years of my existence which is not bad for me. I give Americas future generation a chance to have clean energy. There’s protests everyday about me taking away land from Texas landowners. I mean 1,000 homes isn’t a lot it’s just right for everything I want to accomplish. One day, people came up and started hitting and scratching me. It was terrifying, why would you ever hit a kid I mean everyone has feelings. The violence  got so bad I had to have body guards everywhere I go. I didn’t want to be in the spotlight but it followed me everywhere. Every single day someone’s at my house throwing rocks or saying the pipeline must go. They don’t even know me or what I was raised to do. But did they bother to learn anything, no they just know that I pollute the world and can cause environmental disasters. I just really want to crawl under a rock and never be seen again. But my family won’t let me stop there. They tell me I must go on no matter how people feel about me. I was raised to do one job and one job only and that’s to transfer 830,000 barrels of oil across 1,179 miles of metal.

Cualidades

It's Elemental: Barium

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Art - Freshman - Hull on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 9:23 pm

For the last art project of the school year this was a lot of fun. I enjoyed carving and printing, and I did not cut off a finger. This type of project wasn’t new to me because I printed during summer camp but didn’t focus on negative space or matting art. My element was Barium. Some interesting facts about Barium is that Sir Humphry Davy discovered Barium in 1808. It’s Atomic number is 56 Barium is found in salts that are used to make fireworks green. Barium is also used in metals to make them heavy sometimes used in silverware and X-rays. My print is called Barium Man. It suits the print because the carnie is holding up an anvil that is made by Barium. I had other sketches for Barium but this sketch was perfect At SLA we embrace using the five core values and during this project the values were useful in many areas.

Inquiry: The first question was which sketch shows the uses to Barium?  A good question that I asked myself was would this be easy to carve without cutting my self?

Research: To make my sketch I had to learn more about my element. I researched more about Barium to get an accurate design to see what it looks like. Based off of printing from before, your sketch should be easy to carve. Another thing is to know about negative space. If you know where your negative space is your print will turn out better than expected.

Collaboration: When it came time for printing we all collaborated as a whole to put out paints and take turns using the different rollers because there was more paint than rollers. Another way we collaborated as a whole was the clean up. We all came together to clean up the room when we were done so we wouldn’t be late to our next class.

Presentation: For my presentation I matted the best print out of all the prints I made. I also decided to show the world my creations by blogging about them. It’s a good way to show off something you are proud off.

Reflection: Over all this was a fun project, if I could do it over I would try a new design that would have thicker lines and less detail. The more detail in the print the harder it was to carve. With a design that has thicker lines and less design it is easier to see the print and it looks a lot neater than mines was.

Negative Space

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Art - Freshman - Hull on Sunday, June 9, 2013 at 8:37 pm
Negative space is when there’s space all around an image. To some people negative space seems like an optical illusion. There’s more than what meets the eye. An example could be a drawing of a vase, the space around it is the negative space. That negative space could also be a drawing of two faces facing each other and the outline makes the vase.

When doing this project it was really hard to find the negative space of the project. When it came to drawing in my sketchbook I was lost. So the easiest way I found the negative space was by making the whole page negative by then I could draw the object or the positive space. With another picture I drew the picture first then added a shadow which acted like negative space. When it came to my real life drawing I used Ms.Hull’s picture as an example. My negative space was the green paper. The trick was to only cut one paper and use the mirror effect to place the positive space down.

I think negative space really enhances drawings. You can look at it in different ways and find something new it makes them fun to look at and it keeps you thinking about what was first. It’s like zebras, are zebras white with black strips of black with white strips? Everyone knows the answer but it’s a fun question to ask. Like art some people see one thing while others see something completely different.

Are you ready for the Holidaze?

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 8:12 pm
Drama High Super Edition: Holidaze is the 9th book of The Drama High series written by L.Divine. Divine is a young author who was born and raised in California by her grandparents. Many people didn’t believe in Divine’s writing. She wrote for her schools paper, blogs and many more. It wasn’t until 2002 she self published and wrote her first book  and began selling and/or giving it away to anyone who was interested. By 2003-2004 she baecame an agent and publisher for the first book. Ms. Divine formed L. Divine, Inc. She attended UCLA, earning a B.A. in African American Studies (1999) and an M.A. in African American Studies (2000, specializing in Educational Psychology). She now lives in Atlanta with her two kids one son and one daughter. L.Divine's picture is shown at the bottoms.

Jayd Jackson is a 16 year old who is the main character of the book. Her story starts when she goes back to school to South Bay High aka Drama High. She lives with her grandmother who is one of the many Louisiana conjure women which means she has powerful powers from Louisiana gods. Jayd has a lot of drama in her life because her grandmother is a conjurer and her next door neighbor is a evil voodoo queen who wants to take Jayd’s powers for her own. The drama is worse in school. It’s close to Valentines Day, and love is in the air sort of speak. Jayd has to face the fact that her crew is falling apart and her frenemy Misty is getting help from her evil next door neighbor. Jayd will need more than her inner strength. She'll need the help of her gifted ancestors, to save herself and her crew.

I can relate to this book because it seems like my life is always filled with drama. My mom thinks it’s because I don't mind my own business which is somewhat the case, but at the same time people tell me everything and then it just goes downhill from picking sides or friends being mad at the other. At home it’s not as bad because my grandmother isn’t my main care taker. I live with my mom and she’s around when I need her. My relationship with my dad is like Jayd’s. I can’t say I hate my dads side of the family because I don’t really know them but my dad wasn’t really around he was in Ohio for 13 out of 15 years of my life. Sometimes he does try to be a dad but it doesn’t work out the way I want it to and it’s the same way with her dad.

Another thing is Jayd cares a lot about her grades and friends. Like with me my school grades are a lot more important than buying new things or the new show on tv. It’s hard for Jayd because she also has a soft side for her friends. She feels like she always have to fix things because she’s the only mature on of the group. No one else wants to grow up and try to fix things. When her to main concerns start to mess up it becomes too stressful to think and you just want to crawl back into the bed. I can relate to that, I really do care for my friends if one of them is hurt I’m always there but it seems like no one there for me. It’s the same way for Jayd the only person who understands all her stress is her grandmother and ex boyfriend who is in his own world.

Over all Holidaze was a good /interesting book. I’m a sucker for drama books, mysteries occasionally I like horror and romantic books. I love the Drama High series once I start reading the book I can’t get enough of it. I have actually recommended the series to two of my friends who have also enjoyed the books. I want to keep reading the series until I finish all the books. The one thing I think can be cut back on is Jayd’s powers. I think it’s great she has them but her and her grandmothers traditions go against my religion. Sometimes it’s a lot to read about and it’s the same thing, I want something fresh. That little problem still doesn’t stop me from reading my book. When I’m done the series I’m going to wait for the 16th book in the meantime I am going to be reading The Other Boleyn Girl, I will be writing a book review for that so stay tuned. Book cover is shown below

I recommend this book for people teens and young adults of the age 13-20. Adults can read it because my mom enjoy the books too but it reaches out to kids in high school. This can be for both genders but it seems like girls would understand the drama that’s in the book. To boys it would probably be silly the stuff they fight about in the book. Overall this book is good for people who can tolerate cliffhangers and don’t mind reading more than one book to get to the ending. It’s a romantic drama for teens. If you give it a rating it’s rated P.G 14 it has it’s moments where it gets graphic with violence and the language. It’s a book that will keep you reading because you want to hope that Jayd will get a better life outside of South Bay High. The first book in the Drama High series is The Fight.

For my creative project I made a prezi that shows how Jayd overcame her obstacles that kept her from her mission.

I'm a Agent of Change

Agent of Change

A You and The World Project

Hey Guys!! So I’m back with my final YOu and The World Blog. This time I don’t want to depress you with sad animals or facts about how people kill animals for fun. I definitely don’t want to type this long as ever blog about the things I do in class so I’m going to keep it simple. And I’m going to add a little something extra for you the reader.

My first plans for my You and The World project didn’t start off the way I wanted them to. Originally the plan was that I would  go volunteer at a animal shelter near my middle school. My spanish teacher took us there for our Need and Deed project and it was the perfect little shelter. Things happened and I could not go that specific shelter. So I talked to my classmates who have the same topic as me and they said it would be a great idea to collaborate together and make one big project and individually talk about our experiences. On April 23rd 2013 Y band lunch Tiarra, Cole and I had a bake sale to raise money for Paws a no kill animal shelter. The bake sale was a lot of fun. We raised about $27 dollars for Paws, but that was just the beginning April 26th 2013 Y and X lunch band all three us had another bake sale which was the biggest success I’ve seen in the history of back sales. During those two bands we raised about $53-$54 which led to a total of about $81 raised for Paws. I’m glad we did a bake sale it was a lot of fun selling goodies to people. Especially when Tiarra makes her famous ice cream cookie cake that sold out so fast, I mean I blinked and the whole cake was gone. Cole also brought in some brownies and you can never go wrong with them. One thing I did learned is that once Tiarra has a goal she sets her mind to it. She wanted to sell everything so what does she do. She walks around selling the last little bit of everything, nothing could stop that child. The video of Soledad and Stephanie shows what happens after the bake sale finished. We were simply just acting silly and having fun.

(One of the many posters spreading the word about our bake sale)

(Yushhhhhh Angelo got his cake)

(Our lovely english teacher)

(More happy customers)

The next step to our Agent of change is to go to Paws and just play with the animals. On May 3rd 2013 after report card conferences Tiara and I went to Paws to deliver the money. We took a mini field trip to Old City Philadelphia where Paws is located. It was a lot of walking and a long bus ride. Sadly Cole was unable to join us but he was with us in spirit. We went in and gave the workers our money. They were really surprised that a group of teenagers gave money in for a good cause. With the money we raised we feed/housed a rescued dog for a week. It may not seem a lot but it’s saving a life. The workers also took our picture and posted it to their Facebook page. The comments were touching. The people said they are proud of our school and the work we did to save the animals.

At the end Tiarra and I got to play with some of the cats. We could not play with the dogs because we have to be older but we enjoyed the cat time. As a pet owner myself it was sad to see that these cats don’t have a good home. I read some of the papers that talked about the cats life some of them were dropped off but one cat had a sad story about animal abuse. In my second You and The World Blog I talked about the many forms of animals abuse and how animal abuse and how in some occasions child abuse are related.

I have to say that was a really depressing blog, seeing what people do to animals is just horrific, but it’s good to educate others so we can put a stop to all the hate and abuse.

Overall this was an awesome experience. It was just smooth sailing. The only problems I can think off was technical. I didn’t have enough space to take pictures so only Tiarra had them all. Another problem was transportation. Oh boy did we have to wait for ever to take a bus to Paws. BUT we did not let that stop us from completing our mission. My Agent of Change does not stop here. I want to try out a new place called Operation Ava. Another shelter like Paws but you can interacts with cats and dogs. For my ILP next year I want to work with a puppy gym that rehabilitate animals who were hurt or had surgery.  I also want to have more bake sales maye start fundraisers around my neighborhood. The mayor thing is to spread the word. Paws and your local ASPCA are always appreciative if you simply donate a blanket or some animal food. If you don’t want to adopt you can always be a foster parent. For those who don’t know foster parent is like being a temporary mom for a kid or an animal. Foster parents can end up adopting if they get really attached or when the animal does get adopted they go home with their new family and say good bye to the foster parent. But adoption is always the best way if you want to adopt an animal you can call your own you can contact me and I can give you information or you can visit Paws website even your local ASPCA center.

Now like I said at the beginning of my blog I do have something fun at the end just say thanks for taking time to read my blog. The ASPCA has a kids website that have weird/kinda funny animal clips and games you can play that involve animals. Click here to access the website

Click here for my sources alphabetized and all that fancy stuff ;)

Final Perspective Drawing

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in Art - Freshman - Hull on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at 12:44 am

In art class we had to draw the art room. So you pick a wall you want to draw in one point perspective. I decided to be different and draw a wall no one else did. It was a challenge, and Ms.Hull probably got sick of me asking all those questions. At the end I was really proud of my view on the art room. One thing I learned was how to draw in 3D. Usually I draw rooms on the paper and they’re flat. It’s actually boring, seeing it flat so drawing the room made me realize there are other ways to make objects in a room stand out. I also learned to have more confidence in myself when it comes to drawing in general. This was a solo project so it was me myself and I. Since I was doing a different wall it was completely different from everyone else. I had to use my artistic eye on how to draw the right size tables and making the windows the right size. My drawing was better because I did it myself. I didn’t use a stencil or google how to draw it. It gave me a sense of independence, knowing I had little help.

If I could to this project over again I would still do the same wall but color my project. The first time I want everyone to look at the detail. I feel color would just ruin the room. I would also use the same size paper but not fold it up. The extra lines ruin the work, if the paper did not have creases in the paper it would probably look a lot more professional. My advice to someone who would want to draw in one point perspective is to appreciate your vanishing point. It makes everything look better. Also don’t be afraid to erase. The eraser will be your best friend. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. You’re not going to be perfect, will you be good? Yes!! Have confidence in yourself say “I can draw” saying you can’t makes you believe it and then you won’t draw. I say if you’re starting draw on a regular sized piece of paper. It gives you a chance to get used to orthogonal and parallel lines. The best resource was Ms.Hull. She was there since question one, of many. She told me believe in my artist eye and keep drawing. It will look good at the end. I also had the support from my orange stream buddies, they helped me when I missed a day of class, and answered more question when needed. Overall I enjoyed this project.

Lady Macbeth the Sly Fox

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in English 1 - Dunn on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at 1:18 am
In Ms.Dunn’s english class orange stream wrote quote analysis about a character from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. I wrote about Lady Macbeth, she’s Macbeths crazy wife. In the beginning the once charming Lady Macbeth, was an intelligent, seductive woman who would use her charm for vicious deeds, until her plans change and she ends up ashamed of her ways. Lady Macbeth would use her charm for evil ways. She had one goal and she wasn’t going to stop until she got what she wanted. I liked Lady Macbeths character because she was insane. I think Macbeth wouldn’t be such a good book if it wasn’t for Lady Macbeth. She basically started it all, if it wasn’t for her Macbeth would have never turned out the power hungry dictator he turned out to be.

For my creative I have two different parts to it.The first part I have a mini story of Lady Macbeth's point of view of everything. I added details that talk about her childhood, and how she met Macbeth. It gives more story/detail to Lady Macbeth. Shakespeare really didn’t give background on Macbeth or Lady Macbeth. I like knowing a little bit about the character and they because who they were.  The second part I made a short film of what I wrote in the story. The film has pictures in it. The film also adds dramatization to the 6 quotes I had in my Lady Macbeth Essay. This is the little kid in me but I love pictures. The book has to be really good for me not to care about the book having pictures or not. Some points in the book needed pictures, the scene with the witches would be ten times better if there was a picture of them dancing. Creating the video was a little hard. You want to make sure it’s not too long where the people won’t want to see it. It also takes a while to make an iMovie so it takes time and patience. The hardest part was trying to find the perfect background music. I wanted to do something from Scotland. It’s rare that you find nice bagpipes that won’t kill your ears. I finally found a song on iTunes that was perfect. The worst part was edit the movie because not everything goes the way you want it.  Overall I'm proud of my work, I think I did a good job on it. I’m most proud of the pictures for the quotes. My original idea was to have my friend pose as the pictures but that didn’t work. So I drew one picture I found some and added the quotes. I love the quotes I think some of them are really deep.

If I could change my project I would want to use a calmer version of the bagpipe music. I would also  like my friends to act out the quotes. That would be so cool to use diffrent people to see how they felt the quotes should look like. I’m still new to using iMovie so Tiarra helped a lot. When I watched her movie it gave me ideas to how to make my movie better. The projects from orange stream are really creative. From viewing their projects I learned new things from each person. I didn’t know that some people were artistically creative like that. What I took away from this essay is I love to free write. Doing my creative part I love making up stories, about people. using iMovie was hard but I like to experience new things, someday it might come in handy.

Everyone Deserves Better

Posted by Sydne Hopkins-Baker in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 2:05 pm

You would never know

Since my first blog I decided to go back to past to where it all started.  I went back to talk to my old advisory teacher from my middle school.  She had our class do a Need and Deed based off of animal abuse.  During the process we connected the dots between animal abuse and child abuse.  This made me go back to interview her about how she felt about the whole topic. I never got to hear how she felt in the six grade now It’s her turn. I did interview some of my friends  with different questions. I wanted to know how they felt about this topic, because some people take it serious and some don’t  Unfortunately the interview did not save correctly but I did get a interview with a animal lover   . (insert link to interview)

After interviewing my teacher I wanted to do a little bit more research. How are animal and child abuse related? It’s simple actually, By abusing a living being that cannot defend themselves or speak out, the abuser shows its power and control. Abuse is abuse no matter how you see it. In clip you should see the women at the end says “If someone could let a dog get into that position what else would they do?” It’s sad how someone could not take care of a simple animal. In the clip the abuser has a child of his own.  If you couldn’t take care of a little animal why buy one? Yes times are tough... but just leaving a puppy to die is like leaving a baby in the streets alone. I think if you can’t afford to take care of the animal take it to the shelter. Just like with a child if you feel you can’t be responsible for it take it to a adoption center or a home. It’s the right thing to do.

The following pie charts show the shocking truth behind animal and child abuse.  The most popular way abusers, abuse animals and babies, is simple neglect.  Which just means not feeding or bathing the animal/child. The scariest thing to me was seeing the ways people abuse animals. I could never ever burn a animal with fire or fireworks. It’s like what kind of craziness!!! Everybody and everything deserves a peaceful death. Not being beaten to death or blown up to pieces.

The new research I did was really depressing. It was sad reading about abuse just in general.  It really got me thinking this is a huge issue.  There has always been abuse but the amount of cases grew in the past year. It’s getting worse by the minute. I think if we don’t put a stop to this all the shelter in Philly will be too crowded and won’t be able to help save the helpless animals. I wonder what would happen if the helpless would never get help? Would there still be dead bodies all over? Will strays stay stray and die alone? It’s the sad truth.  For my next blog I want to give back to the animals. I want to find them a nice home where people will love, not hurt them.

How Could You Do That?

“I hope to make people realize how totally helpless animals are, how dependent on us, trusting as a child must that we will be kind and take care of their needs ...[they] are an obligation put on us, a responsibility we have no right to neglect, nor to violate by cruelty.” James Herriot

I agree with James. Animals  are like children they need love and compassion. I know for a fact because I have a 5 years old yorkie named Mr.Fuzzy and he acts like a baby. I knew taking care of a pet is hard and a lot of work but I would never abandon or neglect this little creature. My You and the World project is Animal Cruelty. Three of my other classmates are doing the same subject but I want to focus more on what makes a person abuse animals and what happens after. That’s the main question. Why does a person abuse, hurt or neglect a animal? Some say it’s because
  • The Person has anger issues and needs something to take it out on
  • The person uses the animal in fights for money
  • They don’t have the money to take care of the animal
  • The person doesn’t want the animal anymore
  • They feel abuse is a way to show love
  • They love animals so much the pet hoarding
Me I want to investigate more on this topic to see what makes a abuser tick. I chose this topic because I love animals. Ever since I was little I would care for every cute little furry animal I could find. I used to play doctor with my stuffed animals. I  knew in my heart I wanted to be a veterinarian. I’m somewhat a animal activist. I don’t believe in animal fur coats and boots. Or hunting animals for fun or money. And just plain old hitting an animal. To me it’s like hitting a person. It’s wrong and cruel. The animal can’t even stick up for itself it doesn’t have a voice. I always believed animals are just as human as us.  As I got older I used to watch Animals Cops and it was sad to see these poor helpless animals left basicly for death.

- This poor dog was left with another pitbull in the winter to die when it’s owner left them without food or water. The police found it when It was too late to save it-

And to me that was wrong. The after effects of being an abused animal is horrible.  Some would have mange hair. And more disease which were life threatening. Some animals could/will not make it from these bad conditions. Because they were left alone for a long point of time they could be antisocial and aggressive towards people. The humane society does their best to re-train the animals but some cases are so bad the only thing they can do for the dog is give it euthanasia and lay it to rest

Some animals don’t have it so easy. Death is good option compared to puppy mills. Those sad places are where humans breed dogs non-stop. Some of the puppies are forced to breed with family. Even at a young age they are forced to bree at a young age. And that could lead to birth defects in the puppy and death to the mother. The birth defects could be very costly to the owner which could lead to the owner on giving away that dog or abandoning it. I advise not to buy a pet from your local pet store, because chances are that pet has been living in a puppy mill most of its life. It takes a little longer but it’s worth it to adopt a pet from a local animal shelter. You would be giving a animal the home it deserves.

Out of all the bad in animal abuse and all the bad people who made these animals suffer there is some light in the dark tunnel. The human Society and the workers from the ASPCA are there to save all  the animals. They have dog catchers. And not the ones from cartoon these guys are true heroes. They go to these homes and take the animals out of bad conditions and give them a doctor's check up, food and a nice home. Some animals are lucky they do get adopted by a sweet person who will love them. Some aren’t lucky because these places aren’t government sponsored they don’t have money or space to keep all the pet. Some are so terrible neglected their only hope is to be euthanized.  With your help you can go adopt a shelter animal. Even if you don’t want to adopt go donate a little bit of money to any shelter. They are doing some good things to save helpless animals.

During the experience in tech class we learned a lot of about being safe on the internet. By not posting bad pictures showing and saying things you don't want to see because it stays out there forever. I knew most of this stuff before but I had OMG moment is when Ms.Hull showed us the video of how the info is transfered thorough our computer and it showed how a big machine checks anything for viruses and more. That was real cool to me I never knew that actually happened, I just though the website just poped up from the internet you never really think it's that complicated. What I want to tell people about having a home network is enjoy having internet. With me I really use my internet most of my house is connected to the wifi. And of coarse the wifi is connected the modem and the modem is connected to the internet (www.) Connected to my wifi is My MacBook, my iPod my moms iPod, my moms laptop, my cellphone my moms cellphone our netflix on tv an for some reason of tv uses the wifi.  If you are really interested look up your home network and the specific details that make it work.
Class Questions:
1.My internet comes in from the modem in the top floor of my house. The modem is connected to the wifi . The internet is really just a cloud in the sky that's goes to the modem.
2. My internet provider is comcast.
3. My internet is in a bundle with the house phone and internet so it's $60 a month.
4. My home network includes tv, two iPods, my Macbook, two different laptops, and a printer.
5. These things are connected by the wifi wich is on the same floor as my room  then theres this huge cable. That runs down to the basement to the where the modem is.
