Rockets Prove They Belong; Mercy-Rule Randolph 16-5
The big showdown between SLA and Randolph had loomed all season long. Aside from Randolph being SLA's most historically heated rival, the recent success of both programs made it a foregone conclusion that the winner of their head-to-head would be in line for a playoff berth. Both teams came into the showdown 6-1, tied for 2nd, and in need of a win to keep pace with University City who remains undefeated.
SLA followed the normal formula of putting their 1 and 2-hitters on base for Jeff Schwartz and Kevin Courtney, the hard-throwing freshman, to drive them in. This time around Randolph's defense held them to 2 runs and got them right back when Courtney struggled with his location in the first.
Justo Rodriguez, the hard-throwing All-Public League pitcher for Randolph, and Courtney settled down in the 2nd, both striking out the side, but SLA was back at it in the 3rd. Abe Musselman got it started off with a roaring double to the gap in Left Center and Kevin Courtney drove him and Jeff Schwartz in with a double of his own. Courtney would score a batter later when Nick Manton sliced one down the first base line to make it 5-2.
Courtney's command issues resurfaced when he hit the first two batters he faced in the 3rd, putting himself in a quick jam. However, Randolph's hitters crowded the plate and the Umpire didn't grant Courtney the inside of the plate all game. They eventually squeezed a run in when a dropped third strike forced a calculated throw to first to ensure the out was recorded. Both sides seemed destined for a see-saw war of attrition, but Courtney induced two groundouts to end the frame and hold the lead at 5-3.
The energy was high for Randolph when Rodriguez took the mound in the 4th, but The Rocket used this third time around to prove they can play at the next level. SLA batted around in the 4th, scored ten runs off 10 hits (three of them doubles by Schwartz, Courtney and Mike Ostrowski) and Mike Sanders laid down a beautiful squeeze bunt to transform a one-time nail-biter into a commanding mercy-rule win.
Courtney closed out a 3-hit complete game performance in the 5th. He finished the day with 11 Strikeouts, and The Rocket provided plenty of fire power with 16 runs on 14 hits. With the win, SLA improves to 7-1 and moved into sole possession of 2nd place. Their next game is Tues, 4/30 vs. upstart Rush.
Gratz Challenges But The Rocket Proves Resilient
Heading into their 7th game of the season news of University City and Randolph's wins were common knowledge. The Rocket, with just one loss, knew they need to be perfect the rest of the way to ensure a fighting chance for a playoff birth in what has turned out to be the most competitive season in recent years.
Ethan Reese, fresh off his commanding performance over W Philly, got the start and proved he was more than capable of pitching on short rest notching 11 strikeouts and only surrendering 4 hits over 4 innings. After striking out the first two batters he faced, Reese got The Rocket off to a fast start by ripping a lead-off double. Shockingly SLA stranded the bases loaded and entered the 2nd still scoreless. Reese struck out the side on 21 pitches and then the bottom of SLA's order turned it back over en route to building a 6-run lead. Jhonas Dunakin smacked a shot into the gap in Right Center that seemingly was deep enough for a Home Run, but officials reversed their initial call ruling it a ground-ruled double. No harm no foul as Dunakin would later score when Jeff Schwartz smashed a monster 3-run Home Run to dead Centerfield.
Gratz scratched back into the game with 3 runs in the 3rd off some uncharacteristic defensive miscues, but SLA got 2 of the 3 back in the 3rd and 4th, proving they can play small-ball as well by moving runners and taking advantage of Gratz's inconsistent defense. Gratz was far from giving up though and scored 2 on a couple of extra base hits off Jeff Schwartz, who came on in relief in the 5th. Schwartz eventually settled down, quieted Gratz's bats and squashed a potential rally. The Rocket was cool, calm and collected as they weathered the late rally by Gratz. And then they opened it up with 7 runs over the next two frames to close the game out in 6.
The 15-5 win sets up a huge showdown with Randolph riddled with playoff implications as both teams stand at 6-1 and a game behind University City. The showdown on 4/24 will be the start of a 5-game road swing for The Rocket, but no one seems even slightly phased. The program's historical success on the road, on account of playing without a home field for the past three seasons, has set up a "no excuses" mentality, and an ability to perform as a unit even when the opponent's fan base gets loud. Calls of "Bird...Bird....Bird..." tend to be met with gutsy strikeouts, solid defense, and a heck of a lot of runs for The Rocket.

Perspective Final
a. What is one thing that your learned specifically that you did not know before.
In spite of nine years of school art classes and many extracurricular courses, I had never been taught the intricacies of one-point perspective drawing. THe entire concept is new to my work.
b. How did leaning this thing make your drawings better.
While one-point perspective may not be evident in my nude sketches or figure studies, such techniques may come in handy portraying realistic landscapes and spaces. As we have been studying in my figure classes, negative space and positive space are intrinsically linked, and portraying each of them is equally important for a finished art piece. Perspective drawing will help me create lifelike and almost tangible backgrounds and negative spaces.
c. If you did this assignment again, what would you do differently?
Given another chance I would certainly allot more time to the basic mapping of my drawing. While I understood the concept, I don’t believe that, or much artistic skill, are represented in the sketch.
d. What is your advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing before?
Make sure to get other people’s opinions on wether or not your drawing makes sense. In all drawing it is common to get so wrapped up in the piece that you are unable to see it from an outside perspective. This can happen even more with formulaic drawing such as perspective.
e. What resource helped you the most and why?
I’d say that my t-square made this project possible. It’s nice to know that he’ll always be there for me, providing right angles and plane surfaces...

SLA To Open Second Campus at Beeber Middle School Site
Due to the overwhelming demand from the students and families of Philadelphia, the Science Leadership Academy and The Franklin Institute are proud to announce the opening of the Science Leadership Academy - Beeber Campus. Science Leadership Academy – Beeber (SLA-B) will open with 125 9th graders at the Beeber Middle School complex in the fall. SLA-B is being generously supported by a $1.9 million grant from Philadelphia School Partnership.

Mi nombre es Padre McEnroe, soy director primero y sacerdote en St. Patricks y una izquierdista. Soy el director de la escuela por un tiempo tan largo.Tengo sesenta años de edad. Valoro las palabras de Dios, mis estudiantes, la educación y la misa del domingo. Creo que el todo personas deber igualdad. En cielo y ojos de Dios todos personas son igual. También, no hay personas pobres o ricos en el cielo. En la medida de lo posible, no me gusta estar en el mundo de la política, porque es una situación complicada. Debido a la política, tengo que dejar a mis alumnos y St. Patricks.
El color de fondo de la imágen es muy oscura, pero hay partes de luz. El centro de la imágen son más ligeros que los lados de la imagen. Los colores juega con el azul oscuro, azul claro, negro, amarillo y naranja. Las luces de la ciudad alcanza las bandas de agua desde el otro lado de la imagen. Tampoco recuerdo haber tenido unos recursos para obtener comida. Traté de ayudar a la clase obrera, pero no es suficiente. En cuanto a esta foto, me recuerda a las dificultades en la vida. La oscuridad de Chile, pero todavía hay algunas pequeñas luces. Las dos personas que representan unión y el compromiso. La mujer que sostiene el hombre representa la esperanza y la unidad. Los trabajos de Van Gogh son muy fantásticos y llamativos. La obra me llamó la atención porque las reflejos de las luces de las ciudades en el río son muy interesantes y muy bonitas.

Loren Jenkins A Band Art Quarter 3
I can say that for myself my drawings are becoming better and better each quarter. I know for me I am trying the best that I can do because I am not an artist. I am getting better with getting close to the image that I am suppose to be copying. As for my individual project I decided to create a ceiling piece or the art room. It's quite simple, but it was free handed and I didn't not trace from the board or hand traced anything. I am happy with my initial project even though this was not what my original intention was to do. I was suppose to finish my jean wallet I created out old jeans that I had made into shorts. Unfortunately, I lost my wallet over the spring break and looked for it and couldn't find it so I created the ceiling.

Mi nombre es Maria Luisa de Infante. Vivo en Santiago, Chile. Soy la máma de Gonzalo y, obviamente, estoy la persona importante en la película “Machuca”. Soy de la clase alta, un momio, y vivo una vida buena porque trabajo duro por todos que tengo. Creo que en la vida, tienes hacer lo que tienes hacer para llevar donde quieras ir. Solamente las personas quien pueden tomar poder tendrá éxito. Hay muchas personas que piensan que soy una persona consentida y que no se nada sobre esfuerzo pero, ellos no me conoce. He trabajado duro para tener la vida que tengo. Yo he ganado mi lugar en el mundo. Es la gente de la clase obrera quien hace todos mi trabajo duro parece que nada.
Esta es una pintura de Lauri Blank. En la obra es un lago con Pistas de lirio en el fondo. En frente de el lago, veo una mujer bonita. En un vestido largo rojo, ella está de pie fuerte pero con gracia en un lugar feo y turbio. Ella es muy brillante mientras el fondo es un poquito oscuro en comparación a ella. Hay mariposas alrededor ella representa espera por ella a pesar su situación en un lugar oscuro. El tono de la obra es complicado pero la obra en general es sobre belleza en un lugar corrupto.
Los acontecimientos En 1973 fue muy caótico para mi. Los tiempos son difíciles debido a la política y la clase obrera. Recuerdo que en ese año, la clase obrera fue muy hostil; más hostil de lo normal. Ellos hicieron una manifestación y protestan mucho. Ellos hicieron la cuidad ruidoso, y molesto a vivir en. La patria estado estaba en el borde de una guerra civil y una cura loco fue tratando a poner los niños de la clase obrera en un escuela con la clase media y la clase alta. La clase obrera no puede tener una amistad con nosotros. Me molesta mucho la clase obrera porque siempre quieren dar sus problemas y ponerlos en las manos de la clase alta y el gobierno. No es nuestros problema que ellos son de poco recursos. Ellos son la basura de nuestros cuidad. 1973 fue el año que el gobierno sacó la basura. Ellos se convirtieron a "los desaparecidos".
La pintura representa gente como mi quien tenía vivir en la ciudad con la gente basura y aguanta ellos y sus problemas. Como la mujer en la pintura trato a hacer el mejor de él situación. Puedamos apreciar cosas que muchos gente no pueden. Pero la obra no representar qué lo que ocurre cuando gentes como mi y ella tratamos apreciar situaciones malo. En actualmente, la mujer en este obra es probable que un caimán la coma quien es ocultación el la aqua. Es como cuando trato a ayuda gentes en la clase obrera ellos asaltan me como un animal. Ellos no se su lugar en el mundo.
Pienso que este obra es bonita porque le dice un historia de la calma antes la tormenta. Estoy de acuerdo con la obra porque me identifico con la mujer en la pintura.
"Alicia en el mundo de los espejos" desde el punto de vista de Father McEnroe
Mi nombre es Father McEnroe. Yo soy un cura que creo que todos son iguales en los ojos de dios.Yo vivo en Chile cuando el golpe de estado fue. Yo vivo en los tiempos más malos de la historia de Chile. En mi opinión el Presidente Salvador Allende amaba a su gente y el nuevo Presidente Augusto Pinochet no cerea a la gente de la clase obrera. Ahorita, nosotros estamos viviendo en guerra. Ya yo no tengo mi colegio o mi estudiantes. Los de la clase alta se hacen más ricos y los de la clase obrera se desaparecieron. El Presidente Allende se mató y el general Pinochet tomó poder del estado después del el golpe de estado.
Los que yo veo de este mural es dos mundos diferente que esta separado por un espejo. El mundo en la izquierda es muy cajado, bonito, tranquilo, y se ve como si hay esperanza y vida. A el lado derecho del el espejo es un mundo normal. puedes ver que no hay difference entre clases la única razón para eso es porque los pobres se comenzaron a desaparecer. Solamente havia dos different classes. Hay los momios o los de la clase media. Es muy parecidos a lo que ocurría en Chile, ya que por un lado la clase alta era agradable y tranquilo nada malo ha pasado. a continuación, los pobres tenían que pasar por la causa y que nunca llegaron a la felicidad. En mi opinión, esta pintura tiene muchos significados. También es muy hermoso y único. Por lo tanto voy a decir que me gusta mucho esta pintura, y espero que algún día todos podamos vivir en paz.

El gobierno para todos que tenía hacer. El 1973 fue el año que las sombras de Chile llorado. Era tambien el año que Chile tiene pocos recursos y Pinochet se los quito todos de la clase baja. En el principio no había mucha tensión entre la clase obrera y la clase alta. Entonces de la nada a la clase obrera comenzó a desaparecer. Todos los miembros de la clase obrera tuvo que luchar por algo. Mucha gente abandonó la idea de que un día todos estaríamos libre de la dictadura de Pinochet. El gobierno de Chile era distroude y nadie ayudó a detenerlo. Incluso se rompió la amistad que la gente tenía. Estos son todos los eventos que estaban sucediendo durante ese año.
Yo elegí esta esta obra de arte porque me recuerda de un sueño que yo tenía. En este sueño todo estaba en paz, pero cuando me levanto todo se ve como una mentira y despues yo quiero regresar a este mundo.

Before I could not draw in perspective, after drawing this I now have a better understanding of perspective
b. How did leaning this thing make your drawings better.
As I became better at it as the drawing progressed, which left me with a better final drawing
c. If you did this assignment again, what would you do differently?
I would make sure my measurements were better starting out which might have made my final drawing better
d. What is your advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing before?
Make sure that after making the measurements for the ceiling it matches with the floor which is where is messed up.
e. What resource helped you the most and why?
The model on moodle helped me most because it showed me exactly how my finished product should look
