McCarthy Unabridged: The Road, Page 252
The passage below is the scene in the middle of the night at the beach that never made it through the final edits of The Road.
Standing back up on his feet was difficult. He walked a bit farther away from the boy, toward the beach. He bent over with his hands on his knees. He knew he wouldn’t last much longer, his lungs ached and he head spun. He prayed the boy didnt remember any of this when the sun comes up tomorrow. The waves were rolling slowly, crashing and pulling closer. Still coughing and spitting up blood the man quickly started.
He ran to the boy. He was still asleep and the man felt his forehead. It subsided and was back to normal. The boy was whimpering quietly and tears were leaving dirty streaks on his cheeks. Please, leave my papa hes got the fire… me instead. The man sat next to the boy. Tears now streamed down his face too. He brushed the boys hair slowly, wiping the sweat and tears away. Soon the boy’s crying quieted. The man coaxed the fire back with what was left in the ashes but it didnt warm the chill creeping into his bones
Im supposed to save you, you dont save me. What are we doing here? I cant be here without you.
The infinite darkness made the man’s hearing sharper, but there was nothing left to hear. The world was already dead.
My creative addition to the novel is inspired by key motifs, themes, essential questions, and literary techniques. My rationale is explained below.
My goal in writing this passage is to give the reader a unique look into the strong paternal love and affection. This novel tells an amazing story of a man and his son, but their relationship is unlike any other. The boy and the man depend on each other to survive and at times it seems like the boy is truly the older and wiser of the two. In this passage the man faces this reality and breaks down. The boy is restless and sick on the beach when the man hears him talking in his sleep. The boy is worried about the man and, once again, wants to protect the man from danger.
This book explores themes of selfishness vs selflessness when they meet Ely, when they stay in the bunker, and when the man and the boy share a can of soda. Each time, we see that the boy is astonishingly selfless and giving. In this scene I was hoping to convey another side of that theme. The man loves the boy for his compassion and generosity, but is equally concerned that one of his best features will bring the end to him.
In a dead, post-apocalyptic world the man and the boy travel south. Perhaps the south will bring warmer weather. Whatever the reason, neither the man nor the boy are able to answer why they are still living in the world at all. In this scene, the man breaks down and tries to convince the nothingness around him that he is watching out for the boy, not the other way around. He resigns that he is nothing in this world without the boy. This speaks to a theme of meaning and purpose that is really relevant to all readers. Is our life only worth fighting for if we have someone to love? Or maybe it’s the other way around- only if there is someone in the world to love us?
Cormac McCarthy crafted The Road with a singular and memorable writing style. In my addition to the text I tried to write as close to his literary style as possible. Some notable features of his writing are short and simple sentences that reveal meaning and depth through simple actions and movements. McCarthy rarely, if ever, reveals complex emotions of ideas through long passages. Another notable feature of his writing is the grammar and syntax. Passages may have a sentence or two toward the end of speech that is never explained again. I mimicked this by including a vocal response from the man on the beach. Additionally, McCarthy never uses apostrophes in contractions with words with “not”.

For the first quarter benchmark in Being Human, Dillon and I were told to create a response to a piece of literature in our society now. We brainstormed important ideas that capture the essential themes of our generation: individualism, personalization, access to information, globalization, and more. We pulled themes from books, videos, and articles that relate to our central ideas to make our project as relatable to contemporary literature. For an in-depth analysis of how this project fits into today’s cultural fabric, click here.
We focused on beauty standards and mental health stigmas by designing a cultural response to a play written by a 15 year old girl. First we built the press release, an Instagram feed, which introduced the play to the public. We felt this made the most sense because so many people have found fame through the internet and social media. The feed followed her on the journey of writing the play and having it being discovered by a producer. The press release sparked enough publicity that a famous talk show host, Dillon Degeneres, noticed the play and invited the playwright onto the show. We based this segment off of Ellen Degeneres’ talk show because she often picks up viral video stars and gives them more fame. We used this interview to highlight the key aspects of the play that wouldn’t have come out otherwise. Some of those key points were the two storylines or the way mental health stigma shows itself. In conclusion, this project made us deeply analyze the characteristics of modern times and apply that understanding to a creative and engaging presentation.US Involvement in Iraq- Deadly Chemical Weapons

The Enormous Room by E. E. Cummings
Author of twenty books and recipient of the Bollingen Prize for Poetry (an award given biennially to one poet), Edward Estlin Cummings lives on through some of the best writing the world has ever seen. When Cummings died in 1962, the only poet more widely read in the United States was Robert Frost. However, today Cummings’ name does not instigate the reaction it deserves. He is only known for his unusual syntax in poetry- rarely do readers explore his expository writing.
E. E. Cummings was born in 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. By 1916, he had received his B.A. and M.A. from Harvard University. The following year, Cummings volunteered for the Ambulance Corps in France during World War I. His term was cut short when the French government suspected him of treason and imprisoned him in La Ferté-Macé, Orne, Normandy for several months.
In 1922, he published The Enormous Room - an autobiographical account of his short prison sentence. The book offers the reader an interesting glimpse into the mind and life of young Cummings. In the beginning, his accounts of life and people in the Ambulance Corps can simply be described as juvenilely cynical. He pokes fun at prejudiced guards and rude Frenchman by giving them nicknames and illustrating their comical appearances in mocking detail. Some may see this as witty and comical while other readers are left with unfulfilled expectations of more philosophical and melodramatic writing. In the beginning, this style of writing is mildly disconcerting. However, as the story progresses, he establishes a unique rhythm to the book. The chapters are sorted by significant events, or, more commonly, by significant people. Cummings’ effort to encapsulate the nature of his fellow inmates creates an unparalleled feeling of familiarity with characters. For example, when he first arrives at the prison, he observes the effects of the call for dinner on the men:
The transformation produced by the planton’s shout was not merely amazing; it was uncanny, and not a little thrilling. These eyes bubbling with lust, obscene grins sprouting from contorted lips, bodies unclenching and clenching in unctuous gestures of complete savagery, convinced me by a certain insane beauty… I felt that the last vestige of individualism was about to utterly disappear, wholly abolished in a garnboling and wallowing throb.
Cummings’ pacific attitude towards his imprisonment is apparent throughout the whole book. Through heart-warming or pitiful accounts of his friends’ lives, he demonstrates both his and their value for optimism in spite of the adversity they face. His unmatched strength in delivering such a personal perspective is admirable. He does not care much for government and politics; his main concern is the people and places he sees. He writes, “O gouvernement Francais, I think it was not very clever of You to put this terrible doll in La Ferte; for when Governments are found dead there is always a little doll on top of them, pulling and tweaking with his little hands to get back at the microscopic knife which sticks firmly in the quiet meat of their hearts.” Yet he is both poetic and affirmative when he communicates these thoughts.
He by no means disregards the unjustness of his situation, (every now and then he makes snide observations about the politics of his situation) but through direct comments to his readers and notes to the friends he met in France the reader will immediately understand Cummings’ takeaway from his prison sentence. The Enormous Room delivers the message that even in a place of distress and misfortune, one can always find room for personal growth and meaningful friendships.
Numerous critical readers would suggest that many of his poems have unique perspective and depth that this memoir seriously lacks. This belief does not give Cummings the respect he deserves. Lost among his world famous poetry, this early work from Cummings is valuable for many reasons. It is important for readers to keep in mind that at age the age of 28 he is writing about an experience from when he was 22. His style of writing consistently features odd word usage and strange syntax. Such a prose gives the feeling that only Cummings will ever truly understand what he meant.
Readers seeking a true story with meaningful relationships between key characters will find The Enormous Room immensely satisfying. Furthermore, readers looking to diverge from the structure and prose of typical novels will love Cummings’ distinctive use of literary devices and creative ambition in this book. The Enormous Room teaches about people from all around the world with all kinds of economic, social, and ethnic backgrounds growing and developing despite horrendous living conditions.
The Enormous Room by E. E. Cummings. Published by Dover Publications in 1922. 208 pages. Autobiographical.
This is a quote from The Enormous Room by E. E. Cummings that offers a great glimpse into the literary beauty that is Cummings’ prose. The unique painting of E. E. Cummings as a young man was made by John Bedford. This piece as a whole is an artistic way to share the depth and intimate writing style found in The Enormous Room.

If you walked through Cherry Street or the side streets surrounding it, you’d come face to face with rows and rows red brick homes pressed together tightly, decorated with tiny plants, road bikes, and election signs.
Stroll just a block or two north, and you’d get explore the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. You could visit the Central Library, the cornerstone of a gigantic free library system or the Franklin Institute, a world renowned hands on science museum. Or let yourself be amazed at the Philadelphia Museum of Art- home to artistic and architectural achievements from the United States, Asia, Europe, and Latin America.
From there, just a SEPTA (the public transit system) ride away is South Street. The long street the divides Center City and South Philadelphia is always teeming with animated hipsters, somber artists and everyone in between. If you like shops or restaurants with character, South Street is full of both.
Finally, yet another short walk or ride east is Olde City, an area highly concentrated with national historic landmarks. Visit Independence Hall to see where the US first established its values. The Constitution Center will teach you about the document that governs the supreme courts and Liberty Places houses the well known Liberty Bell. All of these historic gold mines are situated on cobblestone streets where horse-and-buggies crowd the intersections.

The Audition | Michelle Friedman
Looking around, I felt a bit intimidated
by the over-priced, over-hyped, and shiny sports cars parked next to my run
down, rusty, hand-me-down car. Though the people inside would never know what
car I drive, the contrast in social classes was already blatantly obvious.
Shutting the car’s door behind me, I inhaled the freezing, icy air through my
nose and a rush of energy flew down my spine. For some reason this tricked me
into feeling calm for the next few minutes and I managed to walk the short
stretch from my car to the front doors of the building.
The space was not quite what I had
imagined. I had pictured a small, modern studio with bright colors, young
smiling professionals, and a few lighting lamps and fans sitting around. A
place where people feel welcomed. Before me I really saw a large, bland space
with some industrial lights set up here and there. The concrete walls and
floors were not so much frightening as they were depressing. In general, the
whole room glowed with a grey tint that made everything seem a bit somber. In
contrast with the setting, the crowd of girls to my left, waiting to audition,
was quietly whispering amongst themselves, clearly not shy or scared of
anything. From the left side of the building a strong mix of fruity and floral perfumes
came creeping over to mix with the faint Clorox smell left over from the
cleaning crew the night before.
I assumed that I was supposed to go over
to the crowd of girls, and when I approached the group, nobody reacted to my
presence. I took this as a good sign, and quickly took a seat. The clock
hanging above a doorway told me I still had about ten minutes until the
auditions were scheduled to begin. So I pulled my phone and headphones from my back
pocket and put on some music to pass the time and calm my nerves. I crossed my
legs and sat back in my chair, as I let my mind wander. I saw a loose thread
hanging from the bottom of my shirt, but when I tried to pull it out the thread
kept pulling through and through. I quickly realized that touching the thread
was a mistake because my shirt was now awkwardly tight by my right hip. Great,
another blemish to make me stand apart from the other girls. I decided to
simply stop fidgeting and crossed my fingers in my lap.
Slowly I watched as girl after girl
walked through the door and back out; each one looking more satisfied than the
first. An hour later I saw the familiar woman step from the doorway.
“Weiber, Christina?” She looks up from
her clipboard and sees that I’m the last one there.
“Yep, that’s me.” I respond with a smile.
The smile wasn’t reciprocated.
She led me into the audition room, and I
saw before me the standard set up. The recruiters sat behind a heavy wooden
table, and there were a couple of bright white lights set up around the room.
They each had tall coffee cups before them, and looked like they were there for
serious business. I was taken aback by the intense lighting and faces before
me.
“Good afternoon, Ms. Weiber, how are you
today?” Said the man in the middle. All three of the people sitting behind the
table were dressed in very professional clothes. The two men were surprisingly
wearing new, shiny suits and the woman was dressed in a form-fitting, black
dress and modest heels.
“I’m great, thank you for asking. I’m
very happy to be here.” I started to hand my résumé over, and the lady who
escorted me in leapt up to deliver it to the recruiters. I could have easily
done the simple task myself, but nobody commented on it so I pushed it out of
my mind.
It felt like they were a hundred feet
away from me, but in reality, the table was about twelve feet from me. Once all
three of them got a copy of my papers, the man in the middle introduced them
all.
“I am Alex Minkle,” he motioned to the
left and then right, “this is Trey Greenwich and Alice Krin. If you could give
us a minute or two to look over your files, please.” I nodded silently.
It took them about thirty seconds to leaf
through the sheets I gave them and then they huddled together and started
whispering. With his elbows resting on the table, Alex Minkle chuckled behind
his hand and glanced up at me for a second. I couldn’t know for sure what they
were saying, but I didn’t want to look at them. Looking down, I still felt eyes
on me.
“Alright, Ms. Weiber, can you tell us a
little bit about your background? Where were you raised?”
I had never heard this question at an
audition before. I wondered what the point of the questions was but I decided
not to question what they were saying, I mean, they are in charge here.
“I grew up by 49th and Polk
St. I still live there though.”
“Uh huh…” Responded the woman. She seemed
a bit discomforted. I already suspected why, but I didn’t want to let myself
believe it. “What do you do to make a living?”
“Well, I’m taking classes at the
community college right now, so I don’t have time to work.”
“Then how do you provide for yourself?”
She asked in a snarky tone.
I was starting to hesitate now. For a
simple television advertisement, they were asking really specifically personal
questions. I didn’t want to offend the woman by not answering, so I didn’t.
“I live with my parents.” I responded
slowly.
They exchanged glances momentarily and
then stared straight at me. Their eyes seemed to bore holes in me wherever they
looked. I felt the spotlight on me but not in the way I like. I expected this
to be a regular audition, but suddenly the room felt colder to me and their
faces seemed harder.
“…Really? And what do your parents do for
a living?” Continued the woman.
“Please excuse me, but would you like to
hear the song? I don’t understand why these things matter right now and I don’t
feel comfortable sharing all of this information with you.”
She smiled and looked in my eyes with a
look that frightened me. “We are simply-“
The Greenwich guy decided to interrupt
her and speak for the first time that afternoon, “Christina, we need to know if
you are fit to represent this company, don’t you see? We need someone who looks
professional and experienced.”
“Alright, but you have my résumé right in
front of you. Do you believe I am unqualified?”
“That’s not what I mean.” He spoke
slowly, like he was explaining something simple to a child. “What I mean to say
is that we can’t let just anyone off the streets work for us.”
This really got me. I finally saw the
real reason behind all of their questions. I thought that by this point in my
life, once I had such a strong résumé, none of this stuff would happen to me. I
remember when I went to my first audition for Macy’s and all the girls around
me were white, rich, and from private schools. This conversation here was
starting off the same way that it did with the women at Macy’s, and I was not
eager to let it keep going. I took a breath and tried to not say anything too
rash.
“Off. The. Streets.” I repeated.
“Well, you know what I mean,” he
responded, “You people usually bring some sort of trouble, and we like to run a
smooth operation.”
“‘You people’? What do you mean, ‘you
people’. What’s different about me?”
“Christina, don’t pretend that you don’t
see this.” Of course, he was referring to my skin tone, but I refused to give
in. I’ve had this conversation with too many people before, and this was the
last straw.
“Mr. Greenwich. Sir. I first of all,
would like to thank you for your wise words. I realize that you and your value
the face of your company more than life itself, but I too, value my face. I
hope I don’t offend you like you’ve offended me, but ‘you people’ are the only
people causing problems for anyone right now.” They looked at me in shock. “You
see me as a black lady. I see myself as a strong, talented woman who is
passionate about preforming arts. You see as the face of crime and property, nothing
more. You now know where I live, and for some reason, have now deemed me unfit to
work for you. So, I thank you for your time and attention, but I can’t work for
you. I pray that you will change your view of people soon, because you are
living in a dark, secluded, world.”

[panting, running] I can’t do this. When did these hills get here? Who designed this course anyway…? It’s unreal. [heaving].
[pause]
What is this muscle hurt like this [desperately] And why do my shoulders hurt. And my arms. And my thighs. And my calves. And my feet. And my toes. I won’t finish it all, there’s no way. My body just won’t take it. No way.
[running, wiping sweat, looking around]
How are you doing that?!?! And why are you so jolly and carefree. How are you all putting up such a great facade? [angrily] I know you you’re hurting everywhere, just like I am… right? Maybe…. Maybe I’m just not cut out for a full marathon. Maybe I need to cut it short right now. I have more miles left than I can count on my fingers.
Oh my god! It’s been twelve miles already?! How come I suddenly don’t remember running.
On no. There he is. Ellington. God I hate Ellington! Last week he came to work with coffee and donuts for himself and our boss- what a kiss up!! [rambling] He constantly pretends like he does all the work around this office yet he comes in late and leaves before anyone else! God and he is so rude to me! I don’t even know why he hates me so much. What did I ever do. Ugh. I don’t really care though, I just know hes a dick and I hate him.
[heaving]
Well shit, now I have to run better than him!!
Nope, not today mister. You show me up everyday. But today will be different, I just know it. I have earned this. After all, I haven’t been practicing manically for nine months just to be shown up at the last minute by Mr. Perfect.
You can do this. You can do this. You can do this!! SWEET! A downhill. Alright, just focus on the mile now- Ellington is out of the picture. Well, almost.c He’s just down the street, and I know can pass him if I just go a little bit faster!!
[passes Ellington, sticks tongue out at him]
Huh, I feel strangely rejuvenated!! Maybe 14 more miles won’t be so deadly after all. And anyway, there is no way Ellington will do the full thing in that condition. Heh, heh. Tomorrow at work I’ll hang up my medal right by my desk so whoever enters my office, will have no choice but to notice that gold, gleaming beauty.

It is important for stereotypes to exist because they provide a common ground for different groups of people. However, we have a tendency to use these stereotypes as entertainment or as a means to dominate a person or group (for example, Hitler and the Nazis). Now, what do you do when a young teenage girl is the subject of such stereotypical judgements? The answer is nothing. You do nothing. Stereotypical humor is often the favorite kind of humor among teenagers (after sexual jokes, of course). Take for example, one of the countless reactions when people find out I speak Russian.
“Wow, you know another language? You must be so smart!” they say.
“Thank you…?” I respond. I don’t mean for it to be disrespectful, but it often seems that way. Once they’ve mentioned commented on my intelligence, I anticipate the stereotypes that are bound to come my way.
Everybody is familiar with the traditional Russian stereotypes, right? The most popular one believes all Russians have unlimited supplies of vodka in their homes and can drink bottle after bottle effortlessly.
“You must love vodka, right? Can you hook me up with some?”
I know they are joking, so I laugh. For a moment it’s funny. Yet, after hearing the same vodka jokes again, and again, and again, somehow they just cease to be funny. It’s hard to believe, right?! Other stereotypes state that Russian parents are perpetually angry and strict, as opposed to the rational and loving American parents. If they’ve expended all of their brilliant vodka jokes, they’ll usually go for parental stereotypes.
“Huh, your parents must be so hard on you!!” they assume.
Cautiously I respond, “You could say that.”
Other stereotypes state that Russian parents are perpetually angry and strict, as opposed to the rational and loving American parents.
It is absolutely bewildering to me that people can make such wild assumptions just because of the language someone speaks. From my own experiences, I see that strangers and friends equally stereotype me and my family just because we speak a certain language. In this case, that language is Russian.
Languages, dialects, accents, and slang all indicate unique characteristics about a person. Often, we assume that if someone speaks in one of the aforementioned ways, they are foreign to us. Therefore, it is assumed that that “someone” has different beliefs and behaves differently.
In the documentary “American Tongues” several people from the northeastern states were asked for their opinions on people from the southern ones (American Tongues). They blatantly stated that southern dialects and accents indicate that they are stupid and inferior. Such stereotyping about a person’s intelligence or behavior based on their accent is a well known and common phenomenon in American culture. Northeasterners claim that the “Southern Drawl” and their strange slang is what leads them to believe that Southerners are dumb. Though they were not mentioned in the documentary, some stereotypes about Southerners say the men all drive pickup trucks, or that they have sex with their cousins. These ideas rarely applicable to any individual (as most stereotypes often are), but still they fuel hatred and judgement from other people. In such ways, people use the differences in others’ dialects to form judgements and stereotypes.
Linguistic stereotypes are not limited to southerners On the other hand, many people from the south perceive northeastern English speakers to be pretentious and hostile. Northeastern English seems curt and rough to southern Americans in comparison to their style of speaking. A prime examples of the type of person they assume we are would live in a big city (New York, for example) and would work in a big corporate office with little to no emotion. Obviously, we are not all like that, and yet when someone hears a New Yorker speak, they create that character that fits into all the stereotypes, and they apply that character to the speaker.
This has happened to me far too many times. I have encountered racist stereotypes because of the languages I speak or because of the accent I have. Many of the judgements people make about individuals are based off little more than what they hear them say in a couple of seconds, and this simple baffles me. In conclusion, such quick cultural stereotypes that are based off of nothing but linguistic differences are just one way stereotypes damage our society.

Research: I did online research to find answers to my inquiry.
Collaboration: My friends helped me by offering their opinions and I also worked with Ms. Hull to finalize this project.
Presentation: After printing the linoleum block I created 2 frames in order to decorate the school with them.
Reflection: I have created a blog post recalling what I did and how it relates to the core values.
Below is one framed print and one unframed.
Hunchback of Notre-Dame
In the "Author's Note" this is what I wrote: "This story is based on the story Hunchback of Notre-Dame, by Victor Hugo. He is also the author of the world famous musical and movie Lés Miserables. The story is set in Paris in the early 1800s. It is a historical story about Quasimodo, a very handicapped and ugly man; Claude Frollo, his father and the town priest; La Esmeralda, an unconventionally beautiful gypsy street performer; and a number of other men and women who all seem to want something to do with La Esmeralda. The Archdeacon Claude Frollo is a very compassionate and intelligent man who falls into a path of darkness after realizing that he failed to raise Quasimodo (his adopted son) and Jehan (his little brother). Quasimodo works the bells in a beautiful cathedral and becomes deaf; this, among plenty of other attributes, is why nearly everybody despises him. La Esmeralda is a Bohemian gypsy who performs in the streets with her little goat; together they perform mind-blowing tricks (which are believed to be witchcraft by many of the spectators). Between La Esmeralda and the men of the town there is much personal (especially romantic) conflict. There is also heartbreaking conflict between Claude Frollo and Quasimodo, and the rest of the townspeople; the townspeople treat the men cruelly. This story has many fascinating themes, but the best of them all is to “not judge a book by its cover”. Claude Frollo is a priest so people assume he is sweet and gentle, yet by the time he reaches 40, he is a crooked, horrible and secretive man. On the flipside, Quasimodo does not speak much because he is deaf and only has one eye. He also has a hunchback and walks awkwardly so people assume that he is an alien, mean and wild man. Yet, Quasimodo is a truly genuinely caring person."
Of all of the characters in the story, I could relate most of all to Phoebus, the promiscuous soldier. Don’t get me wrong, I do not relate to him because we are both promiscuous; I can relate to him because when he is among the beautiful, rich and fancy ladies, he feels very uncomfortable, even though he was raised very properly. He feels more comfortable speaking roughly, dressing casually, and interacting with the average people. I went to a private Jewish school for ten years and now that I have finally left, I will always feel out of place with my friends that still go to private Jewish schools. The way Phoebus feels is nearly exactly the same way that I have grown to feel nowadays. It’s not that I have a preference for people who are not “rich and Jewish”, but it’s just simpler and more fun for me to hang out with other kinds of people too.
My favorite character is easily Claude Frollo. Claude Frollo is my favorite character for only two reasons. Firstly, I find it mind-blowing that a person can transform from such a compassionate and eager-to-learn young man to a twisted and impudent man. He used to study tirelessly at the University; he adopted his younger brother at the age of 16 because their parents had died (due to the plague); and on top of that, he took in the discarded child, Quasimodo, and raised him and loved him as his own. Then, once his boys grow up, he turns to studying alchemy in the tall towers of the cathedral, Notre-Dame. Now he rarely emerges from his workspace. When people try to speak to him, he is often unresponsive or just rude and frightening. The only exception to this kind of behavior is Quasimodo; I think this is because they both receive hostility from the people of Paris. The second reason that I enjoy Claude Frollo so much is because he is so complex and unbelievable intelligent.
Finally, I think this book is fantastic, and I would strongly recommend it to anybody who is willing to deal with the somewhat tedious writing style of Victor Hugo. The only (minor) issue that I found with this book is that it had a bit too much historical narration for my taste. At the beginning I felt that it was tough to read through all of the non-fiction, but I did it anyway because I really wanted to get to the rest of the story. It was undoubtedly worth the strain. In conclusion, this is a marvelous story filled with intricately built characters as well as a beautifully written description of the setting. This book is great for anybody who is prepared and eager to read the story despite the slightly tiresome historical reports.
An Agent of Change: Immigrants and Refugees
For
a project in my English class, final task was to act as an agent of change and
make some sort of splash in the world. I decided to host a drive for school
supplies to give refugees. I set up a large box to collect donations at my
school, Science Leadership Academy. The box has
been accepting contribution since the middle of April.
This
all started back in November when I made my very first
blog post about immigration reform. At that time, I really had no clue
what I was getting myself into! I never would have believed that one blog post
would make me care so much about such an intriguing yet complicated national
issue.
After
that first post, I took a small step back. I decided to look around me and ask
some people that were close to me what they thought about possible immigration
reform for our country. I gathered some interesting original research and
compiled it into my second blog post.
Now, I am here, on my third and final
blog post. Yet I can hardly recall how all of this came to be. What is it that
I have been doing for the past month that makes me a true agent of change? For
several weeks I called, emailed, and submitted volunteer forms to countless
companies, organizations, and charities around Philadelphia that work with or
for immigrants. To be completely honest, this was a painstakingly long and
tedious process. For a while I thought I could work directly with immigrants
and refugees; I could use my fluency in Hebrew and Russian to talk and
translate for new Americans. Yet, as it so happens, I am a bit too young and
inexperienced for a job like that. This was very disappointing news for me.
This was all the volunteer work some organizations asked for. Yet, finally, I found just the right organization
that I needed and wanted.
HAIS Pennsylvania (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) is an organization that primarily focuses on welcoming new Jewish people into the United States. Among the many things HIAS does to ensure total care and welcoming for the new immigrants, it provides the following programs: representation and legal counseling before immigration agencies and courts; citizenship, refugee resettlement and other social services to assist newly arriving immigrants, refugees and those recently granted asylum; advocacy and education related to immigrant issues and rights (mission). It is through this organization that I was able to set up a collection for school supplies. All of these supplies will be donated directly to refugees.
(Above, you can see just some snippets of my flyers, posters, and box. I posted flyers all around the halls, stairways, and doors; and even a huge poster right above the box.
Right
now I think that I am at a point where I have done just about everything that I
can do for immigrants/refugees. This experience, though it was short, helped me
discover that I work better with a team. I clearly struggled when I was also,
but once Marina Merlin began working with me, I gained confidence and resources.
Eventually I became more stable by myself, yet I know that I will always prefer
a team. As time goes by, I hope to stay tightly connected with this wonderful
organization and to also keep a close eye on any immigration reform that will
happen in the near future. I am still young and inexperienced, so I truly look
forward to learning more and gradually changing my community and my world.
Michelle Friedman, Negative Space
In my drawings negative space is apparent. The way I went about drawing and understanding the negative space in my drawings simply by identifying the objects and then looking at the outline of them. The inside of the outline is the positive space, and the outside of the outline is negative (it is the dark part). In my cut-out piece, I found the negative space in the different colors. The green and the pink colors are very contrasting, therefore, it is easy to find the positive/negative.
For artists, negative is very useful because it makes it easier for them to delineate the figure of the object. Seeing the negative space for observers is just as important because it helps them define the artwork as well.

Final Perspective Drawing
One thing I learned throughout this project was simply that I can learn new and challenging skills that I didn't have before. I haven't often been faced with a challenge that I thought I couldn't complete, except for this project. I struggled with it a lot and I learned that with confidence and patience, I can learn.
Learning this helped my drawing because I became calmer and therefore my drawing because neater and after some time, it made more sense.
If I had the chance to do this assignment again, I would probably just draw a different side of the room. This side really confused me and I struggled more than I would have liked.
My advice to someone who has never drawn a one-point perspective drawing is to take their time and follow all of the instructions and guidance provided to him/her by their teacher.
I think my most useful resource was Jasim Gilliam. She was drawing the same side of the room as I was, and she helped me a lot with everything. Without her my drawing would stink.
Friedman; Creative Macbeth
The process of crafting this project started with an extensive period of brainstorming. It took nearly 3 weeks to come up with a pleasing idea for a project. The idea for news articles came from the fact that this story is very two-sided. After some planning on what the articles would be on, and how the quotes would be included, it was fairly easy to start writing. From there is was simple.
The greatest difficulty, by far, was just getting everything done. The initial plan was to have many more articles that there are now, however due to lack of time, that number was reduced. The struggle was completing everything.
I am most proud of the contrast between the news sources. One article does not stand out to me in particular, however their relationships are very interesting and I am proud of them.
If I had the chance, I would start this project much sooner and create a legitimate news website and paper for the articles. However, due to limited time, this was not possible.
I did not get to see any of the other projects because I was sick; so, sadly, I did not get to learn from my peers like I would have hoped. However, I learned something about myself. That is that I am not very excited about writing. I thought I might be, but I'm not.
This is a collection of news articles from two news sources- "Scotland's Best" and "Scottish Times". "Scotland's Best" is more positive towards Macbeth and what he does; whereas, the other is against his beliefs.

Hi everybody! I’m back again with some new and improved information about immigration. If you haven’t read my first blog post yet, here it is. Basically what’s going on is this awesome project in Ms. Dunn’s English class called “You and the World”. This is a project during which students choose a topic/idea in the world that is important them; then, the students conduct research through interviews, surveys, news sites, and newspapers. A lot has changed in the world of immigration in the past few months, but first we’ll talk about some perspectives on immigration reform.
I have touched on this matter slightly in the past, nevertheless, I wish to discuss it some more right now. Barack Obama wants to grant citizenship to the illegal immigrants already present in the US. Then, he plans on securing our borders (security forces, walls, etc.) so that we can retard the rapid flow of immigrants into our nation. Evidently, there are people that disagree with Obama; one of those people is Senator Marco Rubio, from Florida. "Here's how I envision it, they would have to come forward. They would have to undergo a background check. … They would have to pay a fine, pay back taxes, maybe even do community service. They would have to prove they've been here for an extended period of time. They understand some English and are assimilated. Then, most of them would get legal status and be allowed to stay in this country." He told the Wall Street Journal. Clearly these two opinions differ in many ways. Obama thinks that we should grant citizenship to those already here (though he doesn’t actually specify how) whereas Rubio expects much more out of the immigrants in order to make them a part of this country. Nevertheless, there are still many sides to the never ending debate over immigration. Another side to this debate is that of my older brother, Ilya Friedman. He thinks that there we should keep our doors wide open to new citizens. In his opinion, our country thrives on new people joining our communities, workforces, and country. Many people think that these immigrants are taking away our labor work, but Friedman begs to differ. He says that those immigrants that make their way into the US are ready to work hard in order survive here. There is nothing wrong with that and we shouldn’t scold them for wanting to work. This is excluding people who work but do not pay taxes; Friedman understands that individuals who don’t pay taxes have earned repercussion.
Millions upon millions of people wish to live or work in the US; sadly, most of those people have trouble becoming legal citizens for reasons including, but not limited to, lack of experience, inability to speak English, or criminal records. However, many different kinds of visas and green cards exist for all different types of individuals. Unfortunately, there are far too many to name here and now, but if you want to learn some more about these green cards and visas, you can visit this informational immigration website.
So, what’s really been happening with immigration in the US? Nothing. Seriously, I’ve told you about what people have been discussing, but that’s as far as they’ve gotten so far. If you want to read about some more discussions, feel free to Google some news articles.

Michelle Friedman's Review of Great Expectations
Charles Dickens is one of the most known and highly regarded authors of the 19th century. If you haven't heard of "Great Expectations", you may have heard the titles: "A Tale of Two Cities", "Oliver Twist", "A Christmas Carol", and many more. “Great Expectations has been turned into several movies, but the most recent of all was in 2012. This story was popular when it was written and it quite popular today. It is considered to be one of America’s “timeless classics”.
The encounters and events are told from the point of view of Pip, a young boy. The readers follow Pip’s journey as he becomes a gentleman and learns the most important life lessons he will ever learn. We begin our journey with Pip when he is just a young boy, about six years old. As time goes by Pip dreams of a different life. He lives with his aunt and uncle-in-law. Then, through some unexpected turn of events, Pip moves away from his dingy, poor home and into the fancy neighborhoods of London. That is when Pip meets new, rich, and popular people. He learns about different individuals along with different sides of himself that he had never known before. Through these revelations and more, Pip falls in and out of love and hatred. He battles himself when he is faced with choices that might decide the fate of his fellows; and apart from that, Pip needs to work harder than ever to reenforce connection with Joe, his uncle-in-law because of his foolish behavior earlier.
I believe that the best character in this story is Estella Havisham. She has clearly been through so many emotional obstacles. Miss Havisham, her (somewhat) mother, had exploited her and molded Estella into a fierce and cold woman. Though Estella had seemed cruel for a very long time, she is the character that receives most, if not all, of my pity and compassion because she had to live a life of deception and bullying simply because of what Miss Havisham had endured as a young woman.
If you ask a random group of readers what they have taken away from any book and you will get a million different answers. For me, this book was about finding yourself, becoming the person you want to be, and understanding those closest to you just about as much as you possibly can. I think I speak for most readers of “Great Expectations” when I say that this book contained so many controversial ideas and equally as many inspirational and life-like events. Overall this book is magnificently written and brilliantly articulated.
As a very young boy, Pip meets people who are smarter, have more money, nicer houses, better clothes, and better etiquette. These people happen to be the Havishams, and they are not very kind towards Pip. As a result of these meetings, Pip starts to feel ashamed of his family and lifestyle. He is ready to do just about anything to become smarter, nicer looking, and just like the higher-class people that he continues to meet. I used to attend a very small and private Jewish day school where nearly everybody lived in huge houses, had fancy cars, pretty clothes, and basically had many more items than I did. I know for a fact that I am not the only person who has ever felt jealous in their lives, but Pip and I were constantly around these people who led (seemingly) better lives than we did. Consequently, we wanted the same life. I know that if you, or anybody, were in the same situation you would experience some of the same feelings that we did too.
I would, without a doubt, recommend this book to just about anybody. It has a great plot with much suspense and foreshadow. Charles Dickens is not one of the best known authors for nothing. He has a knack for describing everything in such a way that you will visualize it instantaneously. The only set back when reading any novel by this magnificent man is that he uses slightly too many words for my liking. Nevertheless, this is a terrific classic that will take you on a journey through a young boys life.
Michelle Friedman; Media Fluency
Media Fluency
Hello, my name is Michelle Friedman. Here you see several
photos of things that I particularly enjoy. The first thing is a picture of a
piano. I have played piano for 8 years and I still love it. The next photo is
up top, in the upper left corner. This is a photo with Benedict Cumberbatch and
Matt Smith. These are the men who play Sherlock Holmes, from Sherlock, and the
Doctor, from Doctor Who. Finally, the third picture is one you all should
recognize. It’s the Science Leadership Academy Logo. I also have three words in
the center: Hard work, friendship, and family. These are three big values that
I have in my life.
That is basically what my slide looks like. But why did I
choose to make it like that? Well, presentation
zen and slide design for developers
taught me to use colors that contrast. That is why I chose bright orange fonts and
darker pictures. My pictures also have a border of bright orange to tie it all
together. I made the background one large picture to make everything bolder and
make the res of it stand out. I learned this from Presentation Zen.
Immigration Reform
All freshmen
students in Ms. Dunn’s English class have a new engaging and fascinating
project called “You and the World”. For my “You and the World” topic, I chose
immigration laws and reform. Why, you ask? I have been interested in immigration
for a very long time. Firstly, my whole entire family immigrated to the United
States from Russia before I was born. Including all of my siblings and cousins.
That had me curious about the process of moving to a new country.
I went to a
Jewish middle and elementary school. At school we learned a lot about the
Holocaust and that sparked questions about where Jews and other groups of
people went when they were persecuted in their hometowns. Surely they would not
stay, but they also could not legally immigrate to most surrounding countries
because Hitler had such a powerful influence. I started wondering about
immigration and restrictions for those two reasons. Now onto to modern day USA
immigration laws! Hoorah!
For several
years now, the United States has had many disagreeing opinions about immigrants
coming into the States; mostly feuds about Mexican immigrants crossing over the
borders and living here illegally. There seem to be three major sides to the
arguments about immigrants.
The
first being typically one of more conservative working-class citizens. These
people believe that we need to act harshly and immediately take action towards
removing illegal immigrants that are here already as well as enforcing very
strict border protection. These people are mostly worried that there will not
be enough job opportunities because these immigrants are taking all of the
jobs.
The
next opinion is one of the most liberal kinds of people. They believe that it
is cruel and inhumane to deport people from a country. This include not letting
people in or out as well. They support the arguments that people have certain
rights that they are always entitled to and to kick one out of a country would
violate those intrinsic rights.
Finally,
there is a medium opinion. This side of the argument actually has Obama on
their side as well! These people think we ought to apply the existing laws to
all of the illegal immigrants that are here today, yet secure our borders as
well. They want to keep the 12 million Mexican immigrants here, but not let any
more in illegally.
This image shows a sign that is by the
Mexican/North American border. It is really unpleasant and cold. Though I am
not particularly fond of it, I think it is quite necessary.
In his first
term president Barack Obama did not make many changes towards immigration
reform. Yet this was not completely his fault. President Obama had tried to
pass new laws yet congress would not pass them. However, this term President
Obama really tried his best to appeal to Mexican and Hispanic voters. We still
do not know whether he will stay true to his word, yet we all hope he will.
In
the past, Mexico and North America did not have such a great relationship. They
could not communicate well and there were many disputes and they sparked much
unpleasant publicity. However, the new president in Mexico is willing to take a
different approach to compromising and the future seems bright.
In
my blogs to come, I will inform all of you about how immigrants will be
affected and have been affected by immigration reform. I also hope to educate
you about ways you can make a change. We will go through this process together,
and I hope you enjoy learning about this crucial topic with me.

Friedman, Michelle, Lucid Chart, Home Network
There are two laptops in my network; one MacBook Pro (mine) and one Acer laptop (my sister's). There is also an Apple TV that stays in the living room along with the Wii. My dad uses a Dell desktop too.
(Reflect on what you learned about networks, did you have an OMG moment that you learned something new and interesting? if now write about what you learned.)
I learned that my network is extremely confusing and very expensive. I also realized that internet is not just some magical data, but actually a complicated system.
(What would you tell other people that they need to know about having an ISP/Home network?)
I would tell them that they need to make sure they understand how to hook up their network and also that internet is extremely costly.
