Student Name:
Charles Norman

In School Mentor's Name:
Mr. Kay

Topic Summary:
The goal of this project was to bring awareness to player safety in little league football. There has been a lot of controversy in the football world, about player safety lately, so I wanted to dig into it. There are certain techniques in football that prevent players from getting hurt.

Project Abstract:
I chose football safety for this project because it is really important to me. Teaching players how to play football properly is very important. I played football for a long time, and I've seen many people get injured. None of those injuries were as bad as the injury that I saw in my last year playing football. One of my teammates who I knew for over five years suffered a fatal injury in practice. His name was Quadaar White. He passed away a week after his injury, and I'm still to this day shocked that he suffered an injury that caused his death.

11. Ghee, Theron. Personal Interview. 17 May 2013.

I did this interview with three of my coaches. I asked all of them nine questions about the game, and injuries. I wanted to dig down deep into the minds of these coaches to see how they handle gametime injuries. The coach is the leaders of the team so he has to set the tone when a serious injury happens. I wanted to know what they do to prevent those injuries. I also wanted to find out how they teach their players proper football technique.

Dear Philly,
Let me just say I love you so much. You have some of my favorite things. My number one favorite thing is the Philadelphia Eagles! If it wasn't for you Philly I wouldn't have my Eagles. You have a lot of good food too! I really love those hoagies. Hoagies are my favorite food. I believe Philly has the best hoagies. You may not always be kind to everyone, but I love your toughness. It gets cold here too. I love the freezing temperatures in the winter. I was born here 18 years ago, I've only lived here. I don't plan on living anywhere else, but in this beautiful city of Philadelphia! E-A-G-L-E-S EAGLES!

"Is there still a need for the Patriot Act?" Don't Care

Posted by Charles Norman in American Government - Herman on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 9:06 pm

Do we still need the Patriot Act? How about No? How about Yes? Does it really matter? Seriously have US citizens really noticed the patriot act over the last 11 years. I know I really haven’t noticed it in my life, and apparently it’s been there for the last 11 years. That’s the majority of my life. It’s not going to hurt us by having it, and its not going to hurt us by not having it. If terrorist want to attack the USA the Patriot act won’t stop them. I think the Patriot Act is being used so the country can get complete control of its citizens. I think that’s good for the country and the citizens.

Lets just say a group of citizens are on a 4-way call planning to attack the white house or a city hall. With the Patriot Act the government may be able to pick up on that call and nip it in a bud as soon as possible. Without the Patriot Act the government would be clueless, and one of those places would go down. Or would it? Didn’t the government know what we were doing at all times before the Patriot Act? I think so. The Patriot Act just may be in order so nobody complains about his or her rights because the patriot act is a law. There is really nothing we can do about it.

If that is not the reason why we have the Patriot Act then I think it still needs to stay in place. Because without the Patriot Act Pearl Harbor was Bombed & the Twin Towers were attacked. Since the Patriot Act has been put in place I can’t recall any terrorist attacks on the country, but I can recall some attacks to the country’s citizens. I’ll just name two of those attacks; “The V-Tech Massacre” & “The Dark Knight Massacre”. Could the Patriot Act have prevented these citizen attacks?  I’m not sure, but if it could have I’m pretty sure they would have.

Is there still a need for the patriot act? My answer is I don’t care. It stops the big things from happening but the little things still happen, so I don’t think it really matters. "That's the bottom line cuz Stone Cold said so."

Enemy Of The State

Posted by Charles Norman in American Government - Herman on Friday, September 14, 2012 at 7:06 pm
-how the government is portrayed in the film
In this film the government is portrayed as the bad guys. They seem like "the nosey old lady that lives on the corner of the block." They didn't respect privacy and they did what they wanted how they wanted whenever they wanted. They were kind of like the "Stone Cold Steve Austin" of the WWF.
-how individual citizens' privacy is respected
There is no such thing as privacy in this movie. Just like the old lady in the corner house the government had its nose in everything. They didn't give a damn about individual privacy.
-your opinion on level of access the govt should have to your personal info
I think if you are a criminal that causes harm to the country multiple times ou should not have no type of privacy. If you a regular good citizen I think the government should be able to swoop in on you at least 2 times a year just to check on you. The government has to keep us all safe. They shouldn't be in our daily business everyday. They should not be able to give me a list of things that I have done everyday.
-when individual freedoms can/should be restricted for safety of community
Whenever the individual has caused harm to the country multiple times, their freedom should be restricted. We can't have people out here planning stuff to hurt the whole country or President Obama. If they try to do something to President Obama then they should no longer have freedom. The same goes if it was President Romney (which it won't be.). If someone put his life in danger and he's our president they should no longer have freedom. #ObamaBiden2012

Rough Cut Video Response! 9/11

Posted by Charles Norman in Digital Video -Senior - Herman on Friday, September 14, 2012 at 6:50 pm
I am going to talk about the video with the widower in it. The video started out with those dead flowers on the screen. To be honest I did not think those were dead flowers. I thought that the image on the screen was an image of the twin towers that were crashed into. I thought that was a good connection between the flowers and the towers.

I can’t lie that old guy was confusing the crap for the most part. I at first thought he was crazy, but then I realized he missed his wife that passed away. Then I got confused again because I thought his wife died in the twin towers. She didn’t though. I didn’t realize that until the attacks actually happened. I did notice that he was complaining about it being to dark, and that’s why the flowers wouldn’t grow.

Then the towers were attacked, and the flowers grew. He realized his wife died I think. He just started crying. I thought he was happy because the flowers grew, but he was crying. This is another point where I was confused. I liked this video though it kept my attention unlike the other ones.

Q4 Art Charles Norman

Posted by Charles Norman in Advanced Art - Hull on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 8:30 am
This quarter in art I actually participated in class. I have to say this class was not bad at all. I am not a great artist, but I did enjoy trying to draw some pictures. This quarter I did two hours of art work for each grading week. I started of by drawing logos of all of the Philly teams. I felt good about it. I ended of the Quarter making a football stadium. I tried to incorporate football with this class. I had fun this quarter drawing, and painting my artwork.

Website: http://thehistoricalcivilrightsmovement.weebly.com/

Process Paper:

I picked my topic the Civil

Rights Movement, because I have learned many things about it over the years,

but I know there is a lot that I haven’t learned. I want to learn more about

three specific events, and they were: The Bus Boycott, The I Have A Dream Speech,

and The Assassination of MLK. I knew the basic stuff already, but I wanted to

dig down deeper into the situation so I did.

I checked many different

websites looking for new information, and I found some new things, but I wasn’t

satisfied. So I did something I never do, I read a book, the Rosa Parks

Biography. I learned some things from it; one really interesting thing was that the Boycott might have been set up. Rosa wasn’t the first person to get arrested for sitting in the front of a bus. It was a 16-year-old pregnant girl, I didn’t include this in my project, but it was new to me.

I made my articles like a regular

2fer from English class, but that wasn’t the way I was supposed to do it. I had

to make them like actual newspaper articles so I did. It was kind of hard for

me, but I did it to the best of my abilities.

Then I made my website. I tried to

put the events in order so people could travel through time on my website to

see what the civil right movement was like. I have pictures from each event on

each page. I feel that the website is good. The articles aren’t long, and

boring just about a page and a half for each category. I also have a video of

MLK making his I Have A Dream Speech. In the end I was somewhat proud of my website. It could have been better, but it is what I produced.

Primary Sources:
  1. King, Martin, dir. I Have A Dream. Perf. Martin King. Youtube, 1963. Web. 13 Jan 2012. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smEqnnklfYs>
This is a video of the MLK I have a dream speech. I like this source because it not only give me a chance to see him give his speech, I get to see the crowds reaction to each every word he had to say. Everyone had good reaction. I first thought it was only blacks who attended the speech, but whites also attended.
  1. , and Rosa Parks. Parks Rosa. 1955. Photograph. Clarion Ledger, Montgomery. http://blogs.clarionledger.com/jmitchell/files/2010/05/Rosa-Parks-Dickson1dec05.jpg
This is a picture of Rosa Parks being arrested after her bus incident on December 1st 1955 the website behind the photo explains what exactly happened the day she was arrested. I feel like this is a credible source, I like it.
  1. , and Terry Marshall. King Martin. 1957. Photograph. Terry Marshall, Montgomery. //www.terrymarshallfiction.com/images/MLK-in-Birmingham-jail.jpg
MLK was arrested in Birmingham for leading the Civil Rights movement. He was set to lead a march, and the police would not allow it. He was spit on, and disrespected, and every other way. After all of that he was arrested. Very good picture, and background story.
  1. , and Civil Rights Act. King Martin, President Johnson. 1964. Photograph. Art and History House, Washington. http://artandhistory.house.gov/images/weekinhistory/new/civil-rights-act-display.jpg

This is a picture of President Johnson signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Civil Rights leaders including MLK are in this picture, and were apart of this the Civil Rights Movement. It was a something MLK had been fighting for a very long time.

  1. , and Lorraine Hotel. MLK Assasination. 1968. Photograph. Art and History House, Memphis. http://www.truthmove.org/workspace/photos-content/mlk_jr_slaying.jpg
The is a photo of MLK laying on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel after being shot by “James Earl Ray”. Jesse Jackson, and two other guys were around MLK when he was shot. I like this source because it shows me exactly where MLK was when he was shot, and it has the immediate reaction of the people who were around him.
Secondary Sources:
  1. Luther King JR, Martin, ed. "Martin Luther King's Speech: 'I Have a Dream' - The Full Text."abcnews.go.com. ABC NEWS, 28 008 1963. Web. 5 Jan 2012. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/martin-luther-kings-speech-dream-full-text/story?id=14358231#.TwWnDiOXTEU
This is the I have a dream speech in text. I read this before I watched the video just so I could know what MLK was saying, because during the video I was really paying attention to the reactions of people around him. This source is good because it has the whole speech, and now I know everything MLK said when he gave his speech. I like this source.
  1. Cozzens, Lisa. "Brown v. Board of Education." African American

        early-civilrights/brown.html (25 May 1998).
    http://www.watson.org/~lisa/blackhistory/civilrights-55-65/montbus.html
This is an article about the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and how it started. I feel like this source is good, because it digs deep down into the Bus Boycott. Rosa Parks was arrested, and Civil Rights Leaders such as MLK got into action, encouraged blacks not to ride public transportation. Very enjoyable source to read.
  1. Johnson, Jasmine. "The Martin Luther King Assassination." http://www.maryferrell.org/. Marry Ferrel Foundation, n.d. Web. 3 Jan 2012. <http://www.maryferrell.org/wiki/index.php/Martin
When MLK was shot people all around the nation were affected by it emotionally. This source tells almost everything that happened leading up to Kings death. He was in Memphis for some Sanitary workers who were on strike.

Charles Norman Dayona McNeil PSSA Project Ecosystems.

Posted by Charles Norman in Physics - Echols on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 7:00 pm
Ecosystems
What Is A Ecosystem?
A ecosystem is a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.

What Kinds Of Ecosystems are there?

There are three types of major ecosystems:
1. Freshwater Ecosystems
2. Ocean Ecosystems
3. Terrestrial Ecosystems

What do ecosystems consist of?

An ecosystem consists of the biological and physical environment of an area. The biological environment is made up of all living organisms in the area. The physical environment includes the air, the earth, water, and the weather. All these biological and physical factors interact within the ecosystem. They compose a network of complex relationships that control population growth. Each plant and animal species has a role or way of life within the ecosystem. This is called its niche.

Tundra - The climate is extremely cold, dry, and the subsoil is permanently frozen. Plants these include lichens, low shrubs, and sedges. Some of the animals there are the Arctic fox, lemmings, polar bear, caribou, wolves, and many migratory birds.

Boreal Forest - The climate has cold winters, and a short growing season. Coniferous evergreen trees, chiefly balsam fir, black spruce, jack pine, and white spruce are plants you would find there. Animals include bears, wolves, moose, ducks, and loons.

Temperate Coniferous Forest - Has cool, middle and upper mountain slopes, coastal areas with mild winters and heavy rainfall. Coniferous evergreen trees, including cedar, hemlock, pine, and redwood are among the plant life. Bears, elk, mountain lions, and wolves are animals in the region.

Temperate Deciduous Forest - Cold winters, warm summers, moist. Broadleaf deciduous trees such as elm, maple, and oak. Animals there are deer, raccoons, squirrels, and many kinds of small birds.

Chaparral - Climate includes rain, mild winters, hot and dry summers, fires are common in this area. Plant life includes low shrubs with small and hard leaves. Coyotes, mule deer, and many species of lizards are animals in the region.

Desert - Extremely dry. Cati and other fleshy plants, sparse grasses, and small-leaved shrubs. This region also has lizards, snakes, many small rodents.

Grassland - Temperate, subhumid. Grasses and other herbaceous plants.
Antelope, pronghorn bison, buffaloes, wolves, and coyotes live in the area.

Savanna - Long dry season. Grasses and scattered clumps of trees. Giraffes, zebras, jackals, and lions live in the region.

Tropical RainForest - Warm and wet all year. Broadleaf evergreen trees, some palms and tree ferns, and climbing vines. Animals include bats, colorful birds, lizards, monkeys, and snakes.

PSSA EXAMPLE QUESTIONS

1. How many different major types of ecosystems are there? What are the major ecosystems?

2. What do ecosystems consist of?

3. What is the climate like in a tropical rain forrest?

4. What does the Savanna ecosystem consist of?

5. What is a ecosystem?

I opted out of art class in Q3, so I do not have any art to show. I used this band as a get myself together period. Sometimes I would do work, and other times I would take walks around the school. I using this period as like a free period, but I'm now ready to come back to class, and do some Art. Q4 I will not opt out of art class, I want to come to class to draw somethins, and complete all assignments.

CHARLES NORMAN PROCESS PAPER!

Posted by Charles Norman in English 3 - Pahomov on Friday, March 30, 2012 at 7:03 am

For the 4th Q BM I worked with Arlana, Iraida, and Abe. Our topic is Neighborhood high schools. We started an organization called March For Education. We decided to make a website for our Organization. At first we made a website through Google. It was okay until we noticed that the site looked dull, and boring. So Arlana decided to make a website through webs.com. Our new website is called http://marchforeducation.webs.com/index.htm.

On the new site people can give us feedback on what they think about or organization. We have statistics about Neighborhood Schools, which should make any person want to join the March For Education. The drop out rate in America is 37%. That’s is pretty bad. During the process of research of this project I learned about how bad off the neighborhood schools, and schools in general are.

During the process I was responsible for three things, and they were setting up the website, drawing a picture of a hand/taking a picture of our group, and editing the grammar on the website.

I set up the pages on our original site. Those pages were Home Page, FAQS page, Video Page for our PSA, Contact Us Page, and Overview of our Campaign page. We started to put work on here, but we didn’t like how the site looked, so we made a new website. Arlana transferred all of our work to the new website. My next job was posting a picture of a hand that had our slogan in it. Our slogan is, “It’s Now or Never Your Education Last Forever.” Under the hand it says join hands and March For Education.

The process for making this project for me should have been easy because of the small amount of work I had to do. I at first was bored with this topic because it was about neighborhood schools. Why do I care about neighborhood schools, they have nothing to do with SLA. Well I was wrong for thinking that. After I learned that most teachers don’t care for the students in neighborhood schools, and that the students don’t learn as much as they should, my attitude changed. There is no reason why the drop out rate is 37%. That is awful. So I can say my process in making this project was good & bad. I’m glad this project was made.

Charles Norman Q1 Artwork Figure Drawing & Clear Object Drawing

Posted by Charles Norman in Advanced Art - Hull on Thursday, November 10, 2011 at 11:27 am
I started off this quarter slacking in my work, because honestly I didn't know how I got into this Art class. After a while I got caught slacking by Ms. Hull, and she told me to good work to the best of my ability. I did, and instead of having a figure drawing that looked completely like crap, I made it look presentable. Ms. Hull was not here when I drew the clear object. I took my time and put effort in it, and I think it looked nice. This quarter overall was not bad for me, I enjoyed art class.

Humanities English History Final Portfolio

Posted by Charles Norman in English 2 - Block on Monday, June 13, 2011 at 1:25 pm
This year in History and English was a year of hard work, and difficult learning. This year we learned about things that I have never heard of and things that were old news to me. This year was full of hard work starting at day one. When we got into our English and History class we were quickly told what we would need during the year. Then we got into a circle with our partners, and did some things with some pictures

Our first assignment was our descriptive scenes project. This project was easy because we were doing the scenes based on real life experiences. After we were done with that in History we began to talk about religion, and spirituality. This led up to our first benchmark of the year for History. In English we started to read a book called lord of the flies. To me this book was really boring. We had many class discussions about this book, and in one of them I made the comment that “Piggy is a punk because he is afraid he would get in trouble by the adults even though they are not on the island.”  We wrote an academic paper about the book, and this was our first quarter benchmark for English.

In the second quarter for History we learned about the Renaissance. During this process we went to the Art Museum, and we saw renaissance art. I think the art was cool because they really didn’t have the tools that we have today, and their art was still on point. We also did a trial for Hernan Cortes, and The Aztecs. This was very fun, we learned, and we got to act like lawyers, and all of the other people in court. In English we read Their Eyes Were Watching God. I loved this book. I think this was the best book we read all year. We started to right Poetry this Quarter. I honestly can’t write poetry, because when I think of poetry I think of rhyming words, and I learned that not all poems have to have rhymes. There are different styles of poetry, but to people like me rhyming poetry is the most common poetry to me. This was our second quarter English benchmark. I surprised myself during this process.

In the third we started out Monologue projects. Mrs. Kate came to class, and taught us how to write really good monologues. I started this project with high hopes, then those hopes got crushed, and I eventually gave up on the project. I really wish we could do that over because I would be more into it this time. We had another trial this quarter, but this one was about sweatshops, and who is really to blame for the sweatshops. I was apart of the group called the system. The system really should have been found guilty but it wasn’t. In English this quarter we read a book called passing. Passing was an okay book to be honest I really stop reading it after Clare let her husband call her nig, because she was darker. Our benchmark this quarter was about crossing boundaries, and we did podcast interviews. I interviewed my great-grandmother on her life, and her encounters with racial discrimination.

In our fourth and final quarter in History we read a book call Things Fall Apart, and this led off to us talking about colonialism. For our benchmark we had to pick a place that was affected negatively, or positively by colonialism. I chose Madagascar. We made museum exhibits for the benchmark. In English we the book Night. The Holocaust was our topic of the quarter. I believe that the holocaust was wrong, but the people who were being tortured were hopeful, so I commend them for that. We wrote an academic paper for this quarter’s benchmark. I did pretty well on it. Then we performed in the A.I.O. This was a fun experience also. I feel that my group did well. Now to end everything off I am doing this final portfolio about my year in English/History. #DoubleBlock

The Vision That Brought Change

The Vision Of Change- By Charles Norman

Monologue Project

A man in a jail cell looking out the window thinking to himself.
I’m sitting here in my cell and I’m thinking; how did I end up in here? I mean is this what people get for fighting against cruelty to humans. I was fighting for rights for all south Africans, “Equal Rights”. I felt relieved that people were actually by my side, and they were fighting with me, blacks and whites. We were people fighting for each other’s rights. If we people don’t fight for our rights then who will? I sit here and I feel confused everyday that I am in this jail cell. I don’t deserve this. I was doing the right thing, or was I? I mean are we supposed to do the wrong thing in this cruel world? Maybe it’s the opposite right is wrong and wrong is right. Either way I will keep faith, and I shall continue to fight for our rights, until things change. One day all South Africans will have “Equal Rights”. We must keep this fight going.

A girl laying down on her bed writing in her diary under her cover with a flash light.
            Dear Diary,
Its been a long time since I last talked to you, today I am writing to you today to inform you about my idol Nelson Mandela. He is in jail, and I wonder when is he is going to get out of jail. When he does could this mean that South Africans all over will be treated equally. I love that Nelson Mandela stands up for everyone in our country. His vision is a vision that can not be ignored. I’m only 9 years old, but I can get some adults involved, and we can start protest, just thinking about this makes me happy. I can make big signs, and we will stand outside of the jail, chanting let him free let him free. We will make sure that Nelson Mandela is set free out of jail. Thank You Diary You Gave Me Some Great Ideas, I will be back later I have to go talk mom and dad, so we can get started! See you.
                                                                                                            Sincerely,
                                                                                                                        Jackie Wells

A girl talking to her parents, she is very excited!
Jackie- Mom! Dad! I have a big master plan, and it involves helping someone very important to me.
Mom- Who is it honey?
Dad- Yeah who is it.
Jackie- NELSON MANDELA!
Mom- Isn’t he in jail?
Jackie- Yes he is.
Dad- Jackie I forbid you to go anywhere near a jail, he got himself in there with his mouth, so let him get himself out. We don’t have no business helping someone of that color out anyway. What good has he done for white people?
Jackie- Dad he isn’t just standing up for black people, he is helping everyone, not just blacks. He isn’t racist and by the way you are talking it seems that you are!
Smack.
Dad- Now you go upstairs in your room. I will not have any thing to do with any of your shenanigans, and I will not have a child disrespecting me.
Mom- John you didn’t have to hit her, she is only trying to help someone. Her heart is in the right place, and it shouldn’t matter if they are black or white. I think what she is trying to do is a good thing. I am a big supporter of fighting for rights for all people black and white, and I am ashamed that you would even give a hell about his color. He seems to be a really good man, and I’m going to support our daughter whether you like it or not.
Dad- Sarah you know I’m not racist, but we could get in to some deep trouble for siding on the black man’s side. We will been seen as traders. My family won’t be seen as traders and that’s final.
Mom- Well I’m helping him whether you like it or not, and I don’t give a damn what people think.

Yeah who is it. Jackie I forbid you to go anywhere near a jail, he got himself in there with his mouth, so let him get himself out. We don’t have no business helping someone of that color out anyway. What good has he done for white people? Now you go upstairs in your room. I will not have any thing to do with any of your shenanigans, and I will not have a child disrespecting me. Helping him out, would be getting involved with government business, and that could lad to serious trouble. Like us being locked down right along with Nelson Mandela, and we don’t need to be in jail. If we go to jail your mother and I both could lose our jobs, and you would be kicked out of your school. We have to pay a lot of money for you to be able to attend private school. Be happy that you are getting a great education at the top private school in all of South Africa. Plus you should be occupied with homework so I don’t know how you would have time for helping out someone else, you got to take care of yourself first.

Who is it honey? Isn’t he in jail? Oh I would say yes right away, but we will have have to see what your father has to say. You know how he can be, and for the most part what he says goes.

John you didn’t have to hit her, she is only trying to help someone. Well I’m helping him whether you like it or not, and I don’t give a damn what people think.

Sarah you know I’m not racist, but we could get in to some deep trouble for siding on the black man’s side. We will been seen as traders. My family won’t be seen as traders and that’s final.
