Time line

Project statement:

I chose to use this as my topic because its something that I have been around my entire life. Cigarettes are extremely popular from youth all the way to the elderly. As someone who has smoked cigarettes plenty of times, but has never fallen victim to their addictive qualities I have always had a very large indifference with cigarettes and never quite could understand them. I have always been interested in the idea of people spending so much money on something like this and they have been around for decades, never really losing their popularity despite plenty of people fighting against them. Not only are cigarettes extremely popular and present in todays economy, but also in the media. From commercials to movies cigarettes are widely used and talked about.

Cigarettes addictiveness has kept people spending tons of money just to get their fix. Some people would refer to this as a “legal drug” and in reality this is true. When it comes to globalization and the economy cigarettes are a worldwide favorite. Cigarettes were traded heavily by the europeans and when the industrial revolution arrived they became even more popular. This lasted for a long time where plenty of people were constantly smoking, until the 1900s arrived with more scientific advances that taught people about the dangerous qualities of cigarettes, however this was not enough to end the era of cigarettes and they are still sold and used everywhere to this day.

Cigarettes also made it into the music industry. Widely song about in all genres of music. Cigarettes are known as a national symbol for coolness and people associated with being cool usually smoke cigarettes whether its characters in film or actual celebrities all the way to your local high school cool kids and frat boys.

"The history of Tobacco ." . Boston University Medical Center, n.d. Web. 9 May 2013. <http://academic.udayton.edu/health/syllabi/tobacco/history.htm>.

This site has a good amount of information for the more history related aspects of Tobacco which can help me trace globalization to some of its earlier days. I will be able to get some of the details from its launch into the trade.

I chose these two advertisements because they show a great example about how the difference in scientific research on cigarettes was changed over time and discovered to be unhealthy and no longer promoted by doctors.

Fort Minor- Cigarettes . Youtube, Film. 9 May 2013. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4BtXstAMVc>.

This song is a perfect example of cigarettes and their influence on todays modern media and youth. The music is listened to all over and it talks a lot about cigarettes in a metaphor for rapping, but also talks about how cigarettes are an example for coolness.

I wasn’t sure how to format this link, but i plan to use this as an example for the distribution of tobacco as well as tobacco accessories which are also something that overwhelms the economy.

I chose this picture because it shows the simplicity and expense of modern day tobacco sales and how people can not only get them easily, but they are quite expensive for their mass abundance.

Dylan Cordivari - Capstone

Posted by Dylan Cordivari in Capstone - Herman on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 7:39 am
Process Paper:

For this project I wanted to test my limits as a director, actor, writer and camera worker. I wanted to emphasize my leadership skills in a way that would not only help myself but help and benefit others and those around me. When this project started I had many visions that would and would not come to pass, but I never let that stop me. During the capstone process I created and designed my own production company with my own notorious crew of misfits making films and learning how to better our skills. We started out sophomore year as some friends with basic knowledge of film and the heart to keep learning. By the time I got to senior year I was looked up to in film by a lot of the under class intro students, so i took it upon myself as part of representing Bad Habbit' to SAT in my spare time for Herman's digital video intro class. I try to teach even the kids that aren't in my ILP that I instruct. With that being addressed I have strained to teach anyone who needs film help despite not having the time or energy to do so. I have been working hard to make films by writing, directing, filming and acting with Jesús, Joseph, Steven and Jenny. Aside from teaching, learning and making films we also wanted to try being more professional and scored ourselves our first film job where we filmed a party event for a company that holds parties and vacations for the mentally disabled. We filmed the whole event and edited a video for them to use and hand out to their customers and future customers. This gave me a lot of confidence in film and was something that made me strive even more for my future film career.

In the end I chose this as my capstone because it was a huge part of my life and my life as a student as SLA, without which I would never have started on the path of film. The project just sort of spoke to me, I wanted to teach and learn and make films that I could show people and be proud of. When i set out to do this project all I wanted was recognition for not just myself, but also for my crew. I wanted us to be known as the kids who were good with film and could help teach and train others to do the same. I chose this because it worked and was something I had been working on extremely hard and making it my capstone gave me more room to work on it and make it an even bigger thing that what it was when we started. The goal of this for me was to simply make something out of nothing and create something I was proud of. This project was not easy we ran into fights and other issues along the way, but we all came out of it having worked hard and created something great that we plan to continue to work on both in and out of SLA with and without rough cut through out our time together over the next few years.

When it comes to the core values of SLA I think my capstone did a good job of covering all of them at once. Inquiry in our ability to strive to continue to learn film throughout the whole process, Research in the loads of reading, watching videos and learning hands on about film and the things i searched for for inspiration, Collaboration is evident from the shared capstone I had with Jesús as well as the students we worked with and taught, Presentation in the fact that we created videos that were presented to the public and shared all over social media and reflection in the fact that after we finished each film we talked about what we could improve or innovate so when we went to film our next work it would be better and would show that we are also getting better. This capstone was for us and also the students of SLA.

When we set about creating this capstone I had already been working with the ILP and making films for two years so I had a very good idea of what I wanted to do. First was our company workers. I had to recruit a crew and that was going to be simple. I had Joe Tartaglia as my co-director, Jesús as my partner/ co-founder as well as chief editor, Jenny Cruz as my make-up and costume design and Steven Webb as one of my star actors as well as various extras. My next step was research for inspiration and skills. When inspiration struck Jesús and I would sit down and design a story and script after we finished this process we brought it to the crew and got ready to create our film we then went through pre-production and production phases. During post production jesús and I would sit down to edit our footage. Once we had a final product I would upload it to youtube.com Facebook as well as various other social media. This was our process through the year and on the side i would teach small lessons for choreography and film work to the crew so they knew what they were doing as well. This was a process throughout the year.

Throughout this process we encountered a lot of obstacles the ones that really hindered us were the amount of school work we had making a imbalance in time to work on the project. We also had an issue with teenage drama that did make for some very difficult working conditions. We also had a problem with technical issues that put us behind for time. We needed to fix these issue unfortunately we couldn't stop the course load of work so we decided to incorporate our digital video assignments with our company so we could have access to more people and better ideas. When it came down to drama we had to replace certain people or let people leave temporarily until things were better and finally for the technical issue we had to back up our files better and put a better lock down on our software and footage to keep it safe.

When i was trying to complete my capstone I had to work hard and find lots of different things to help me as I went along. This was hard because I hate working really hard and its not always easy to find the right resources. I had to find something to help me with ideas and motivate me to keep doing what I was doing and although I found a bunch of small stuff along the way it seemed nearly impossible to find it. That s when it finally hit me and I had realized my best resource was right under my nose the whole time. I loved to watch Rooster Teeth Productions' videos and CG work as well as their podcasts and buy their merchandise. They were the perfect example of what I wanted our company to be like. They started as a bunch of video game playing friends that got together and made films using their video games and from there they went on to become famous and sell tons of their stuff as well as please a giant audience of viewers. I researched everything that they did over time so I could stay inspired and continue to aspire.

The things I am most proud of about this capstone are my fellow students that I watched work super hard and get better and better as the year went by. This made me feel good about myself and the project because the thing I really cared about in this project was to make film and to help those around me do so as well. I learned so much from this process about myself and film and art as well as that with work, friendship and the mindset to do something anything is possible.  If I could do this project again I would have strived to not let drama get into the way of our work and I would have tried harder to please those around me so they had a easier fun time with the film we produced. SLA may not exactly be a better place because of me but I feel as if i brought at least some type of memorable flare to my work and to my friends around me and that is really all I care about. I hope that in doing this project I would have made more students comfortable making films and maybe even inspired some people to make films as much as I do.

 Abstract:

For this capstone I had a vision and I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Although a lot of things changed during this process the hopes and dreams of my peers and I never faded. We set out sophomore year as two art students with a bunch of ridiculous ideas in our heads, Jesús and I built the show Dylan's dumpster and not long after with it a free form digital video ILP. We created a show and built up a cast. Once I realized that I was capable of making something like that I set out on a career path that no once has been able to stop me in. I work hard to press my limits in film and created my best work possible. I decided to team up with Jesús for a new project and once we built Members Only productions, he left and I had to build a new cast. Joseph Tartaglia helped me achieve this goal and became my new partner. Together we created and whole new line of short films and trailers for our audience amusement. That was the entirety of my sophomore and junior year. Senior year I still had the same dream and Joe had become just as motivated as me. I wanted to make a capstone that would be inclusive and would produce great work. Together with Jesús and Joe I set out to make Bad Habbit' productions our new company. We started making some new films right away that grew from digital video and our ILP sessions with other students. We filmed our trailer for a zombie film called complication Z to start up our new year and that became a great success to us. We filmed all over the city in random woods and abandon train track to in houses and school. I pushed my limits with my ability to work the camera to almost a perfection. I even make sure as part of representing my company that I take away my x2 lunch on occasion to help SAT Mr. Herman's digital video intro class. I like to teach as well as work in every other field of the job so I took this year to take up everything at least once. I worked with make up, directing, acting, filming, editing, stunts, prop making, choreography and script writing. This was a challenge but I loved every minute of it and teaching it to those around me made me feel even better. That was what I set out to do for this capstone I wanted to teach film while at the same time prove that with help I can produce a whole lot of funny and credible films. I do have visions for the future of coming back to further help teach when I have free time and helping joe run Bad Habbit' from the outside while he keeps the ILP running for the underclassmen including Marshal woodruff who will possibly be our future chief editor to take over for jesús if he accepts our offer. We wanted him to feel welcome in a community of film students that want to make films with him as well as Joe who will be taking over for me and some other future juniors as well as hopefully some sophomores that may be interested. This as well as our outside business working professional jobs is off to a great start, but it is still only a start we have worked hard this year and I have strived to make this as perfect as I could and I am very proud of the work my team has made and of my capstone's message and affect in digital video classes.

BM- Project

Posted by Dylan Cordivari in Science and Society - Best on Monday, January 28, 2013 at 8:02 am
Recipe:

6 apples - peeled, cored and chopped

1 cup of finely chopped walnuts

1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon

1/3 cups of sweet red whine ( this is being replaced with a similar trap juice that is non alcoholic. )

Place the apples and walnuts into a large bowl. Mix together the cinnamon, sprinkle over the apples. Stir in the grape juice. Serve immediately, or refrigerate until serving.

Analysis:

This meal is traditionally a jewish meal that is ate at passover, which is a jewish holiday, although I am not jewish i do have family that are jewish. Usually this meal has some processed food in it, however the way I am making it is made with completely 100% whole food. When it comes to fat content sugar content and caloric content all of these are very low for this dish aside from the traces of sugar throughout the meal there isn't really anything that contains a lot of calories or fat. Its not something that would have any negative effects of your body and it actually can make you feel more energetic and healthy. This food is pretty much completely organically grown and all the ingredients can be pretty easily found in nature. This meal is much much healthier then fast food because its not greasy or fatty and isn't processed.

Personal reflection:

I feel that my role in the food system is that I am a human. I feel that each human has a certain role where each animal has a role. The food chain is a huge part of the food system and I feel that although most humans don't take part in this role our role should be keeping balance in the food system and making sure the world and ourselves are healthy. Most humans don't do this, and to be quite honest neither do I. However, I feel that in a perfect world we would all eat healthier and try harder to keep a balance in the worlds food system. The biggest issue we have as a food system is our lack of healthy foods and our abundance of animal slaughter for food. I love to eat unhealthy food and animals, but I see where it is too much and wrong. I see that as people we don't want to balance things and that is a huge and major issue with our culture, society and food system. This is because we are raised in a way that we see ourselves as superior and life has been like that for so long that that is all we seem to know anymore. Changes I would personally like to make and that I could make would be less fast food and fatty foods in my diet to be replaced with more healthy foods. I would also want to eat less fatty foods and maybe cut down on the amount of food that I eat. The impact of these changes would be little to nothing on a grand scale, but could very well change and even save my life. Part of me is willing to make these changes, but I know that it will be something that is very hard for me because I am accustomed to eating the way I do. I have tried being vegetarian and although I could do it I just didn't feel like me and I wouldn't ever change myself.

Blog Post 1: Enemy of the State

Posted by Dylan Cordivari in American Government - Herman on Friday, September 14, 2012 at 8:15 pm
- In the film to me the government seemed to be portrayed as intelligent, two-faced and twisted. They had a darkness to them throughout the movie, even within the first few minutes. They seemed to act above the law entirely in a very behind the scenes and "under the radar" type manner.

- The privacy of people were definitely not respected in this film because they were able to disrespect it in almost every way possible. In the movie they used tons and tons of different bugs that were placed, quite literally, everywhere. From pens to clothing articles etc.

- Personally I think that the government should have a limited amount of access when it comes to the everyday privacy of people. The government does have a responsibility to protect its people yes, but there are ways to go about that, that don't require bugging its citizens. They shouldn't have to resort to invading our personal lives.

- Honestly I don't think that individual freedom should ever be restricted i believe that there are fair and sensible ways to go about everything and if we were to just sit down and think we could come up with ways to keep people safe without having to break the constitution.

Blog post1: September 11th shorts

Posted by Dylan Cordivari in Digital Video -Senior - Herman on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 8:17 pm
The film that touched me the most was the one directed by sean penn. The film caught my attention in the first minute just by showing the setting. I felt like i was in a sort of time machine seeing the way the older man's apartment was set up. He was older and a lot of the things in his house and even some of his mannerisms were very old fashioned which was interesting to see when it was related to something that had happened in a more modern time period. The film was able to grab my attention in many ways and make me really feel for the man with use of the music, camera angles, effects and dialogue. The dialogue i think is what got me most because the man's actions and speech were so dark to a point of almost insanity throughout the film and that really threw my emotions around. Sean penn has an amazing style of directing and it was shown very well through this piece.

Physical and Chemical Properties

Posted by Dylan Cordivari in Physics - Echols on Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at 5:42 am
                                 Physical and Chemical Properties

Experiments that can be done to discover both chemical and physical properties of elements are actually very simple. For physical it only requires looking in detail at the element for its characteristics such are color, size, smell, freezing point and boiling point as well as many other things. The experiments are quite simple depending on the chemical but simply looking straight at it or using tools to get closer looks at it and then writing down the things that you see. For things such as boiling point or freezing sport all you have to do is heat the chemical until it reaches its boiling point and freeze the element until it reaches its freezing point. For chemical properties the best way to describe them is to quote a site from elmhurst college. “ It is quite difficult to define a chemical property without using the word "change". Eventually you should be able to look at the formula of a compound and state some chemical property. At this time this is very difficult to do and you are not expected to be able to do it.” The only real way to find out a chemical property is to introduce different conditions to a chemical and then discover its change or reaction to that condition.

Chemical and Physical properties are basically just the things that make a chemical what it is. Every chemical has these properties and they all need them to function the way that they do. Chemical properties are just the things that make a chemical tick. The way it reacts to other chemicals and conditions that it is introduced to as well as the reason why it acts that way which is often difficult to discover. Physical is simply the quite literal “Physical” characteristics of the chemical just like a person can be described a certain way so can chemicals.

Example Multiple choice questions:

1. When water Freezes it undergoes?

a. Sublimation
b. Physical change
c. Chemical change
d. The water cycle

2. Which type of process is the evaporation of a chemical?

A. Chemical change
b. Chemical Kinetics
c. Boiling
d. Physical change

3. When rain is made water vapor is turning into rain form. This is an example of...

a. Physical change
b. Chemical change
c. The rock cycle
d. Erosion

Benchmark Reflection

For the project I was assigned to work with jesús, Taylor and Steven. The group was good for me because they were people I easily got along with. Although we all had things that made it so we couldn’t work we addressed those thing and the project went through very smoothly. None of us argued or complained about where the project was headed which made things easy on everyone. I was left in charge of the video and website. I did the best I could for the website which was a slight bit difficult based off of what we had, but the video went great. Jesús was a great help making the script for the video and finding some other components for it. I handled the rest of the video and although I wasn’t in class some days I made sure I got what I had to do done while out of class so we could have all of our components done on time. I worked on the production of our video component, which meant I had to film, act and edit the footage we got. Taylor and Steven helped me with acting and Jesús gave me stuff that would further help me edit. In the end I would love to work with this group again because we worked together very well and all made sure we got out work done on time. Everyone did what he or she had to do and no one even began to argue during the course of the project. I feel that we worked as a good team and everyone got done what they had to get done.

Humanties Portfolio 2011

History can teach you the many wonders of the past. English can teach you how to write and create things beyond your imagination. In Mr. Block’s classes this year I have learned many new things. I learned about a lot of different things from the worlds past and about how things work and how cultures affect the world in different ways. The world is full of thousands of different types of cultures and religion accompanies them. The art of writing and poetry is also very fluent in every culture along with music and artwork. All of these things connect and all of them connect the world and make the world what it is today.

I learned throughout the class that power could make a person insane. Power is something that can be highly dangerous. It can make people loose their humanity. People can loose themselves to power and do horrible things. We read the book night and that was a prime example of such things. I wrote a Thesis Paper about this topic. The holocaust was a great example of power overtaking people. The sweatshop trial also shows this. People that ran sweatshops abused their power to make a better profit over their mistreated workers.  Another thing I did about power was my Op Ed piece, which was about dead peasant insurance. This was something that had a huge impact on many people, but people still don’t know about it. Industries get drunk with power just like anyone else.

Other stuff that I learned was about how poetry can be a form or art and writing. Poetry is more then just writing on a page and can be interpreted in many different ways by many different people. People can experience poetry in many different ways. We made a Poetry Portfolio in English class that I had very much enjoyed. Although poetry has guidelines the possibilities of how poetry will come out are limitless.

In the final unit in history we learned about colonialism. I learned that something as commonly used as colonialism can have a hugely bad effect on the world and the people right around it. Wars were started and there were huge revolutions because of it. It made for great profit and helped economies, but usually at the price of blood. I did my Museum Exhibit on the Vietnam War, which started because of the colonization of Vietnam by France.

Many people and many ideas surround us. All of these things are unique. We are all our own person, but we share many things with each other. We all have many similarities and the world needs to process how similar people are to each other whether we like it or not we all share common ground. We are all human. We are all people in society and we all owe each other similar things that need to be in our every day life. Everyone in their community, from a small town to a metropolis must learn to respect that community and live among each other as similar and unique human beings. In Mr. Block’s class, both English and history, I have learned this is a very in depth truth.

The Final Script

Posted by Dylan Cordivari in World History - Block on Monday, April 11, 2011 at 1:17 pm
     Understood but Ignored
                                            ACT I

                                                Scene 1

(A young Somalia boy around 17 or 18 speaking to a crew of pirates on the way to a cargo ship.(Sounds of a motor in the background. nothing on stage just black. voices can be heard.))

                             Abdi

You want to know why I am a pirate at such a young age. My father decided that I should fight for my waters against the illegal fishers and the illegal dumping. He is a pirate and wants me to prove myself to him. I figured it sounded fun. I am young but I am ready. The ship isn’t far now. We are going to be boarding soon........... I know all about the new guy routine and I wanted that. I wanted the challenge but since my dad is top boss he insisted that I should do all the boss work here..........Yeah.......... Okay. Throw the grapple up so we can position the ladder. I am no longer going to be oppressed and put down by the people forcing the injustice of polluted waters in our land....... No. I am not scared. I am ready to do what is necessary. Ok. You informed them that we are boarding?........ Okay. Climb up. (They climb up onto the ship and see the crew.)

                                                 Scene 2

(The men walk at the crewmembers and point their guns forward. Abdi Stammers often from fear or being in over his head.)

                              ABDI

Get down! Y-You you heard me get d-down! This ship is our property now!...... What? D-Don’t hit you? Then get down when I tell you to. Listen to us and you won’t get hurt. Where is the captain? Tell me!........ In the cabin? Okay guys go get him. Come on you guys are coming up to the cabin too. (Fear in his voice.) Get moving, but not too fast. One foot out of line and you die! Is this everyone on the ship?........ No one is downstairs?..... How many people?.......Five?.......Then why would you tell me that there were no people? I will pretend this did not happen. K-Keep moving! I don’t want you p-pulling anything stupid on me.

                                                 Scene 3

(They are inside of the main cabin and everyone from the ship is tied up.)

                             ABDI

What are we suppose to do now that we have them tied up?...... Okay, then where is the walkie to their people?......... Okay crew! Where is your radio?........ Grab that! Hand me it!. What should I say?........ Okay I’ll... be the one to talk. Hello?......We have your crew and ship. We want money........ No they will not be killed, if you give us the money.......... 3,000,000 dollars in cash.........American money for an American ship!........ Good. We will be waiting for your arrival. That will show you people to keep illegally dumping and fishing in Somalia waters. Either way we win. We get paid a lot of money or we kill you all and teach the others a lesson.

                                                   Act 2

                                                  Scene 1

(The crewmen hear the call of the pirates. They announce that they are boarding the ship.)

                           Nicholas

What is that? It looks like a boat. It’s a speedboat. Oh no! The-They ave guns. What are they doing? Why would they be doing this?.......... They are boarding? Oh god elp us. I told them we ad to stop fishing ere. The peepal in the United States will never understand that we can not just send people out to steal other people’s resources. I really don’t want to die because of stupid Americans. Okay. RIng the bells! Alarm the ship! Tell everyone that we are being boarded! Urry!........ Oh god. They are on the ship!

                                                   Scene 2

(Nicholas tried to run back but fell as the men walked towards him. He scrambles and shouts in fear.)

                             NICHOLAS

.......Okay! Okay! I will get down! Please don't it me!........ I just don't want to die! Okay guys get up. Do what he tells us!........I understand. Not a word.

                                                   Scene 3

                          Nicholas

Inner thought (spot light on Nicholas): I ave to make it out of this! I will just do as they say and follow their orders. As long as I cooperate they might spare my life. I have to just ope that the U.S. cares enough about us to pay the ransom, so we can be saved. Ee said that ee will kill us if they do not pay.

Outer dialogue: ........The radio? Um... It is over there behind that thing under the cloth.

Inner thought (Spot light on Nicholas again): Ok. They are getting the money. will they really pay 3,000,000 dollars in cash for a few men on a ship? I ave to be with my family. Will I ever even see them again? I know that the Somalia’s have it really ard, but so do I. That is why I took this job. Do they realize that other people ave it bad in the world too? I ope they don’t overreact and do something crazy. Whether I live or die this is my final trip out ere in the Somali waters.

                                                     Act 3

                                                  Scene 1

(It has been 10 hours since the pirates boarded the ship and the coast guard has arrived along with some of the military. The coast guard sent over some food and a phone to the pirates and crew to keep them comfortable.)

                              ABDI

I am calling the shots here........ No you listen to me Steven! I am not sending over any hostages until I get the money and I get a safe way out of here.........No! I am not changing my mind. I will not give you one hostage now!........ Yeah! You better go get the damn money.

(Slams the phone closed and puts it in his pocket. Looks at his men and the crew.)

                           ABDI

They keep trying to get us to hand over one or two hostages before we get the money. I don't think I am ready to call shots on something this big. They like to play mind games........ Why would they try to snipe us? We just want the money.........They would rather just have the money and the hostages? That’s nonsense! Well... I guess you might be right. Then we will just have to be more careful. Put the crewmembers up in front of the windows. If they fire then they hit the hostages that they are trying to save! I just want the fishermen out of my waters. If they want to keep sending people here then they will pay the price until the day they learn from the error of their ways.

Inner thought (Spotlight on Abdi): Part of this is obviously just for the money. I would like to be rich and make money for my family. How many people care for the fishing and dumping. I still do because it is my people’s land but it is not my land. I do not own these waters. I am making money from this while fighting for a good cause. Is that right? No it isn’t is it. What am I talking about of course it is.

Outer dialogue: Okay this is where things get out of hand. We need to kill one of the hostages don’t we? I heard you all talking........ Of course there is something wrong with it. Isn’t there?......Maybe your right. They were illegally fishing. Yeah! Do it.......(They hand him a gun.) Me?......You want me to do it? ( He looks down and the floor in thought) Okay. I will do it. He pulled the captain down to his knees in front of him (The man is on his knees on the opposite side of the stage and the boy is pointing the gun at the crowd as if it was the man.) and dialed on the phone........ Hello. I am calling to let you know that we are going to kill the captain......No. I don’t have a choice. (He gives the phone to the captain.)......Hey! (He hit him hard and fired. He shoots at the crowd and the man falls on the other side of the stage.) He is dead but he told the damn coast how many of us there are and the weapons that we have...... Yeah you’re right. They have no way to get us.

Inner monologue (spotlight on Abdi): I am not so sure that we are very safe in here. I should try to be easier on them to get what I want instead of using force. I don’t think I should have killed that man. That was not good. I should have let him live.........No! He paid for his crimes. That was justice. Not murder. Or is there no difference? Of course there is!...Is there?

                                                       Act 4

                                                   Scene 1

(Group of military men with the coast guard trying to negotiate. American hostage negotiator talking through the cell phone to the pirates.)

                   OFFICER STEVEN WALSKEY

(He constantly stares out at the boat squinting or looks through Binoculars) Hello this is Officer Steven Wolsey. I just want these people safe........No you are not!........ This is absolutely ridiculous.....Just let them all go and we will let you go free....Fine! Give us the hostages and all the money is yours. I have it right here.....(whispers to the people next to him.) Go ahead and snipe them out. The room has tons of windows. (Back to the people on the phone.) Ah! You smart-ass! Take the hostages out of the window. We will stop dumping and fishing. Does that sound good? Just give us one hostage........No! No. No.No.No.No don’t do that! Take it easy and don’t kill anyone. Hey! Take it easy.......Calm down.....Just breath man and relax okay....(Draws out the word relax very long.) Relax........God dammit! He shot one of the damn hostages! I give up! Get the money or more are going to die!

Inner thoughts (Spotlight on Steve.): is 3,000,000 dollars really something that we could consider spending for a few lives. Are their lives really worth that kind of money?

                                                          Act 5

                                                       Scene 1

(Nicholas sits tied up thinking about what was going on. The men lie behind him all tied up as well. A few men sit in the full body sized windows. The crewmembers sit randomly across the room and Abdi paces.)

                           NICHOLAS

Inner thoughts (Spotlight on fisher): Oh god! Oh no no no! Ee killed im. Ee shot im in the ed. What am I going to do now? They are killers. They don’t need the money.  What will appen to us? Okay! Breath. Breath. Inhale exhale. We are obeying them. They won’t urt us....All this for some fishes? This is too much. Please god I ave realized what I ave done wrong. I promise that I ave. Let me live and please let this all just end. Don’t make any more people die today.

                                                    Act 6

                                                Scene 1

(Abdi is trying hard to keep the crew in line. They are in the cabin room still and the crew is sitting and still struggling against the ropes except for the silent Nicholas.)

                            ABDI

We need to give them the hostages. As simple as that................Forget about the money. We need to get out of here. We won’t win this we should get out while we can...............I know. I do want the money. I just can’t kill another person and I can’t do this because someone wants me to. It’s not right.

Inner Thought (Spotlight on Abdi): I won’t become a bad person. Not now. I have my whole life ahead of me. This has got to change. I have to put things right and let these people go. I killed that man. I can only pray that god will forgive me.( looks up at the ceiling of the cabin as if he could see the sky.) I will do what I can to make things right. I hope my father will understand. They shouldn’t dump in the water or fish and steal our resources but that is no reason for people to die.

                            ABDI

We are leaving. The prisoners are being freed. The chaos is over. (They start to walk to the door. The boy opens it and falls to the floor instantly after he hears one of his friends yell his name. “Abdi!”

                                                   Act 7

                                                Scene 1

(Officer Steven Walskey is watching the cabin.)

                    OFFICER STEVEN WALSKEY

Wait! I see movement................ Yeah. Uh uh yeah get the snipers ready. Train their eyes on the prize............. Okay I see them. I see them moving. Ready to fire once in sight!.........The door is open. Its one of them! Fire! (Just before he screams fire her hears one of the pirates scream the name “Abdi!”) Abdi? What is that?...................... A name? Of who?............The boy? Boy?........ We shot a boy? (Gulps down sorrow).................... Oh god.

I stay in the guidelines and erase when needed but I try to erase minimally because I enjoy the flow of artwork that you just let fall onto the page. Organized work looks good but I think true artwork should simply flow with how you are feeling as you create each piece.

For this particular piece I based it off of my liking for swordplay. The idea I was making started with me sketching and then I made the structure. I am using metal and shaping it with power tools and then making a simple wood handle. I am attempting to build a sword.

Dylan Cordivari M.P 1

The idea behind this piece of art is the idea of life coming from the strangest of places; this specific example being technology.  It is meant to symbolize that I’ve noticed that even though some people think that technology can bring about the demise & downfall of society, it can also bring us life in various ways.

I collected materials that I felt could represent technology: an extension cord, dvds & cds, a mother board, a cd stand, glue, & wire.  I glued each cd & dvd, stacking them onto the cd stand.  Then I cut the extension cord, glued it to the cd stand, & wrapped it with the wire tightly to make it stand up straight. I then glued the motherboard to the top, to make the sculpture look like a flower in a pot.

The project was of importance to me, and using the recycled pieces of technology really made the project good for the environment. It also made sure I showed that life really can come out of the weirdest part of the world. This project showed me that simple things and simple people can make a difference in the world.
