James Adams Capstone

Posted by James Adams in CTE Senior Capstone · Kamal/Shagin/Ugworji · Wed on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at 9:22 pm

For my capstone I decided to challenge myself by learning how to code through python, and through that create a project that could be used by others. My first goal throughout the capstone process was to gain a basic understanding of the python programming language. My main methods of learning was through books, Youtube tutorials, website tutorials, and the most helpful of them all was looking at the code of others.

I already kind of knew what I wanted my final project to be when I started the learning process. I wanted it to be an automated script or in other words a bot. I decided to make a Reddit Bot. The bot looks at a thread for comments containing the name of a song within curly brackets. It then will respond to the comment with a Spotify link that will instantly take you to the song on Spotify’s website.

Little Sisters Podcast James, Kamil, and William

Posted by James Adams in College English · Giknis · C Band on Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at 9:22 pm
Title: Different Views
Podcast Title: Little Sisters

Summary:
In this episode we look through three literary lenses and apply them to what happens during our reading of 1984 by George Orwell. We pay special attention to O'Brien and Winston's interaction. We also look Dreams, and women's roles in the society.

Evidence:
  • O’Brien invites Winston to his place to review the tenth edition of the Newspeak dictionary (161)

  • “Do you know that until this moment I believed I had murdered my mother?” (164)

  • The chapters in Goldstein’s book are titled with the same political propaganda that the party delivers over and over: “Ignorance is strength,” “War is peace,” etc. (188)

  • “I don’t mean confessing. Confession is not betrayal. What you say or do doesn’t matter; only feelings matter. If they could make me stop loving you—that would be the real betrayal.” (170)

  • “The whole atmosphere of the huge block of flats, the richness and spaciousness of everything, the unfamiliar smells of good food and good tobacco…” (171)

  • “The past is whatever the records and memories agree upon. And since the Party is in full control of all records, and in equally full control of the minds of its members, it follows that the past is whatever the Party chooses to make it.” (219)

  • “It was behind the picture” (227)

  • “It was my little daughter. She listened at the keyhole. Heard what I was saying, and nipped off to the patrols the very next day.” (240)

Advanced Essay: Primal

Posted by James Adams in English 3 · Block · E Band on Friday, March 9, 2018 at 10:24 pm

Intro: I wrote this essay to explore the ideas of the abnormally large amount of gay slurs and homo phobics that appear in sports. I am proud of how I tied it together but my grammar could have improved and the middle sections of my essay could have been better.

Homosexuality is something in society today that people are slowly coming to accept however there are still outliers such as the Westboro Baptist Church and other hate groups set out to oppose homosexuality. Sports are a huge part of society especially in the United States. When people think of an athlete who plays sports they will most likely think of a masculine, muscular figure, which is a trait and body composition commonly associated with playing sports. Most people will not think of someone flamboyant which is a trait commonly associated with gay men. The homosexuality bias that occurs in sports does not stop there, gay slurs and dissatisfaction towards gays are abnormally high in the sports communities compared to other groups. The reason for this bias comes down to the fact that people do not like what they are not used to. The majority of sports players are testosterone filled men because testosterone fuels muscle growth, but the overall amount of testosterone in a person's body does not just have that one affect. Testosterone also causes hyper competitiveness and aggressiveness. Maybe there are not more people who are homophobic in sports but more people that speak their mind and tend to be insensitive when playing a competitive sport.

Bill Kennedy is a gay NBA referee and basketball is the second most popular sport in the world. When a gay referee is put in a spot where the whole world can see what he's doing it does not always end up with a person saying something positive. ‘‘I am proud to be an N.B.A. referee, and I am proud to be a gay man. I am following in the footsteps of others who have self-identified in the hopes that it will send a message to young men and women in sports that you must allow no one to make you feel ashamed of who you are’’(Morris). Through the limelight Bill Kennedy has become a figure head for the LGBTQ community, what he says matters, it has impact and effects the NBA as a whole. Bill Kennedy Later says something that provides a great insight into sports culture and its homophobic tendencies. “The stigmas are different for gay male athletes, in part because men have made intolerance and slurs a lasting feature of sports culture. And so, tribally speaking, for a star — a male star — to say ‘‘I’m gay’’ is, in a sense, to place himself above the culture of the team”(Morris). The point Kennedy brings up is something important to the reason why sports has a abnormally high rate of homophobic reports. Culture is the deciding factors in these types of situations, the culture of a team is different then the culture of the world that is ever changing.

The culture of the world has changed immensely, but evolution has not caught up. Humans evolved to live in hunter and gathering societies, we are now removed from this scenario. Humans evolved so that men are the ones to hunt and women are the ones to take care of the home, Now gender roles in society are generally open and not conflicted. The male female behavioral differences were pushed further apart by things such as estrogen and testosterone. Testosterone is known to contribute to aggressiveness, competitiveness and muscle growth. Testosterone gives athletes major advantages in sports because of its association with muscle growth. This could be a major factor in the cultural capital of sports, when a homosexual male or women comes into contact with a place that is fueled by primal human instincts due to the excess of hormones they effectively isolate themselves from the rest of their team. There is no science to prove that homosexuals have a different hormonal balance but their difference is seen as a challenge to sports.

Obviously sports culture is something that needs to be changed. The fact that professional sports players like Kobe Bryant and others can yell out racial slurs and only occur a fine is unacceptable. “Bryant stormed to the bench, hit his seat before sitting down, threw a towel and then yelled "Bennie!" toward referee Bennie Adams. Bryant then leaned back and muttered a gay slur”(ESPNLA). Bryant later received a 100 thousand dollar fine that he appealed. Bryant showed no remorse, he apologized but still went for an appeal. The NBA needs to hand out stricter punishments for these incidents Bryant should have received a league suspension, however in a culture such as professional sports the straight owners would not ask there straight coaches to suspend or trade their straight players. The only way I can see something changing is through time, whether that be cultural change or biological change.

Advanced Essay #2 Politics

Posted by James Adams in English 3 · Block · E Band on Sunday, December 10, 2017 at 9:50 pm
Introduction:
The goal of my essay was to point out the fact that those with less money are destined to talk a different way that is not accepted by the working world. If you talk a way that is considered improper it is harder to get a job and survive in America

Advanced Essay:

Speech in society is judged by the populace. The type of speech that is acceptable depends on the culture of the country or area. For example what is acceptable speech at home would not be considered acceptable speech in the working world. In today's American culture the extent to which a person can effectively speak English contributes heavily to whether they lead a successful life. There is also a definite correlation between economic status and the way someone speaks, when a person who is of low economic status has a habit of speaking in a way that is improper it leads to them not being able to succeed in the future. Specific victims of speech harming a person's chances are immigrants, and inner city African Americans.According to The Bureau of Labor Statistics the African American unemployment rate is 3% higher than the national average I blame this on our “African American vernacular” and how its not acceptable in America's Culture

In one story I read, it talked about the black vernacular or the language that African Americans use to talk to each other. He justifies their use of the English language, while I think this is a good thing it limits African Americans. If society only accepts one way to speak it's necessary for economic survival to conform to that.

It was first grade and I was sitting in my least favorite class, speech therapy. Around me were two of my friends, which wasn’t a coincidence, and the teacher of my first grade class

“One, Two, Three,” I said over and over again

The worst part about speech therapy is that they never tell you what you’re saying or doing wrong, they just tell you to repeat the words you mess up until you get it right. While in the class I was constantly wondering why I was there, I myself couldn’t find anything wrong with my speech. Looking back now I realize that I picked up a lot of language while talking to my friends and hearing my Dad speak to me, my Dad didn’t have a specific incorrect way of speaking but he always switched from the way he talked at work and around co-workers compared to when he was home.

“No, you have to pronounce the R correctly,” my teacher said

I finally knew something I was doing wrong from the perspective of my teacher. But from my eyes I was speaking the right way, I was speaking the way my dad spoke when he spoke at home. But I now know that in society the way I knew was right wasn't.

In Mother Tongue Tan provides insight into how her mothers language affected her life “I think my mother's English almost had an effect on limiting my possibilities,”(Tan, 3). While I do not think the way my parents speak will affect my future in life, I know it will and does for other people and their parents. African Americans, Asians, Hispanics and anybody else who has an origin that is not from an English speaking country can fall victim to people associating speech with intelligence. Speech in America is a way to put down those already at a disadvantage, James Baldwin said perfectly that “Language is also a political instrument,” (Baldwin, 1). Employers choose not to hire people who don't talk within the cultural standard. Some employers choose not to hire these people without thinking of the reason they talk with their altered English. While there are many reasons people and cultures have a specific way of speaking, an example I can think of in America is slavery. During and after slavery African Americans were not allowed to be taught English at all, it was to prevent them from escaping their imprisonment and backstabbing their slave owners. After slavery, African Americans were segregated into poorer schools, this lasted until 1964 which was only about 50 years ago. In today's culture the effect of slavery can still be seen. African Americans have a higher than average poverty and unemployment rate and one of the causes for this is the fact that they were never accepted into the culture of America, instead they chose to make their own.

Something said by Baldwin many years ago still holds true“If you are not a participant in the culture of power being told the rules of that culture makes acquiring power easier.” (Baldwin, 1) There are exceptions to what I’ve said above and that pertains to people who have forgotten their culture or choose to hide when in sight of those who do not accept it. My Dad is an example of this, like everybody does, he code switches between using the language his culture taught him and using the language cultural capital taught him this allowed him to see success in America. But is the fact that he had to code switch to succeed in America really a bad thing?

Advanced Essay #1 Coin Flip

Posted by James Adams in English 3 · Block · E Band on Sunday, September 24, 2017 at 9:15 pm
The purpose of writing Coin flip was to represent the two sides in adventure. One side is fun and the other not so much. Coin flip focuses on the feelings of adventure and presenting a alternative emotion that not everybody realizes is a part of adventure.

Coin Flip

I was waiting at the train station on a breezy fall day. I was ready to go to a new place that I’ve only been to 2 or 3 times. My first problem was buying a ticket, seems simple at first but for a young inexperienced lad like myself it was nerve racking.

“Hi can I get a ticket uhhhh please” I said nervously

“Sure what --------” Said the train conductor.

I'm sure everyones had that moment where someone says something and you don't hear what they said but you just ask again, well imagine that happening but 10x worse because there's a two inch thick piece of glass in front of you and the workers mic doesn’t work. I did however manage to get past that hurdle by saying what I thought other people were telling the worker. After the train incident I got on regional rail and began my trip to Center city. A lot of people may look at the trip as boring but the Philadelphia scenery never fails to interest me, all along the tracks there are graffiti signs that make you wonder

“Huh how did they do that?”

In addition to that, the rising sun can be seen pleasantly casting shadows through all sorts of nooks and crannys that you don't see in everyday life. My personal favorite scene I saw along the tracks was the sun perfectly aligning with the windows of an abandoned and dilapidated factory, thus creating a scene anyone could call art. But sadly all good things must  end as I made my way into the tunnels to arrive at my stop of Suburban station and made my way through the concrete to school.

When people think of adventure people think sadness, happiness and anxiousness. In the scene I go through the emotions of excitement and anxiousness. Excitement because of the scenery i'm seeing and anxiousness to meet new people on the first day of school. However  adventure can leave the emotions of anger and regret. Throughout the majority of my scene I talk about the beauty of the scenery, and that scenery I may never see again. Some would say that is a happy feeling, but the fact that the scene is forever lost in the past makes me angry. Throughout life imagery comes and goes, and people come and go. The memories you get to share with others is an adventure as well. When loved ones pass on most people feel sadness, but is there not also anger for not being able to enjoy time with them again?

I was in a new city, I would have had the sense of adventure, if it wasn't for the fact that it was 110 degrees. The heat was so smoldering that day I could see images of water every corner I turned. After spending the whole day in that heat me, my mother, my father, and my sister needed to do something to kill the time. We were tourists in this new Texas city, and because of that we were lost. First we went to a bookstore to avoid the scorching heat. The inside was like being dipped into the arctic seas after a nice hot lava bath. But the bookstore was only one stop for the family and I planned to accomplish my own agenda, luckily something on my list was right across the street.

“Hey Mom can we go across the street for a few minutes.” I calmly said.

Of course because of my convincing tone and nature she agreed. We quickly got into our black Nissan Altima that we rented in the next town over and sped across the street. My destination was a record store that we heard about on a tour we took earlier. While inside I examined all the neatly aligned sections of vinyl records to choose from, mostly sticking to the bargain section with oldies no one's ever heard of. Seeing nothing in that small corner of the store I moved along to the more prominent sections with well known artists, and presented to me under the name of my favorite artist was my favorite album To Pimp a Butterfly.

This scene is a lot different from my first one, in this one I take a more uplifting stance on the view of adventure. The last scene describes the anxiousness and the anxiety of adventure, and this scene describes the fun involved. Adventure is like taking a quarter and flipping it, you’ll either get anxiety or you’ll get fun. But no matter which one you get, there is still a lingering sense of regret. The feeling comes from never being able to have the same experience twice, sure you might be able to revisit the same place, but will the people be the same? As I lived through my life at the end of every adventure there was something that I felt was rubbing me the wrong way, and when I realized it was the emotions of regret, I forever wanted to go on any adventure I saw for the sole reason that one day I won't be able to anymore.

Rules to Downfall, James Adams

Posted by James Adams in English 2 · Pahomov · E Band on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 12:30 pm

From Rules to Anarchy

Are all societies based upon the need of a leader? Or can they exist without one? More importantly, what happens when a society goes from having rules to being one where rules are non-existent? The answer to these questions could simply be that humans biologically require a form of leadership, if that is true then does that justify that humans need a leader and a set of rules to follow in order to keep them in line. Otherwise, they resort to acts of violence

In the novel Lord of The Flies by William Golding, a group of kids gets stranded on an island because their plane crashed. In the book, they have to go through the struggles of founding a society and they try to work together to survive. In the beginning of Chapter 2, the boys start to create a society with rules. This is directly after Ralph called all the boys with the conch after he was declared a leader. In the quote, the boys become really excited at the prospect of rules and they have a minute of cheering because of it. ”’That’s what this shell’s called. I’ll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking’... ‘We’ll have rules! He cried excitedly. Lots of rules!’”(32). The reader could gather from this quote that the first things humans lean towards in a society are rules and order, but it could also be considered the first step to its downfall. Rules have to be there before a downfall because for their to be a society there has to be rules in the first place. It is also interesting to look at how excited the boys were to make rules and how fast they did it, but they still ended up breaking them later on, turning their society to rubble.

Early in the book, two boys are coming back from a hunt, and they come out of the forest wanting to take a swim in the ocean, and as they head towards the water, they kick down all of the sand castles the smallest kids on the island made. “Roger led the way straight through the castles kicking them over, burying the flowers, scattering the chosen stones...In his past life he and Maurice received chastisement for filling a younger eye with sand. Now though there was no parent to let fall a heavy hand,”(60). This shows the beginning of people trying to break the rules, while it might not have been a rule to be nice to people it should be common sense. The most important part of the quote is the last part, which states that Maurice wouldn’t have done it if there was a parent around. The example shown in the book can be related to the conflict that happened in Somalia during the 1990s because the people in Somalia also lost rules and leadership, leading them to have increased harassment.

According to “The Daily Sabah” (a Somali news website), Somalia even after the war is still faced with the lack of a functional society and leader. Currently, in Somalia, there are millions of people who are displaced and 70,000 kids at the risk of death. The situation that arose in Somalia wasn't because of natural occurrences, but instead was caused by human action. It was a perpetual cycle of having no food and killing to get it so there was no one that produces food. What happened was a prime example of human nature at work. To the reader of the novel, it might seem like the things that Maurice and Roger do aren’t as severe as this but the problem in Somalia is just a scaled up version of the one that took place in the book.  The fact of the matter is that no matter what type of violence happened these are both still examples of humans losing control of reason when society crumbles.

In Chapter 11 Jack and his tribe start to hunt the other boys who are Ralph and Piggy. Their fight turns into something that is very real and no longer the fun and games that occurred before. In a previous chapter there was a catapult and in this scene, they ended up using it. Jack hit Piggy in the head with a rock and Piggy fell down into the ocean with the conch. “See? See? That’s what you’ll get! I meant that! There isn’t a tribe for you anymore!”(181). This is Jack's reaction to Piggy dying, he shows no remorse and instead ridicules Jack. Unlike the other quote that is somewhat excusable, this one is not, Jack legitimately meant to kill Piggy for the purpose of furthering his goal. Even after Jack killed Piggy he tried to kill another when he threw a spear straight at Ralph “Viciously with full intention, he hurled his spear at Ralph”(181). If Jack was truly sorry about Piggy he wouldn't have tried to kill another person right after, and because he did it without repercussions the first time he had no problem doing it again if he wasn't going to get punished. This situation of crime can be comparable to the crime rate in Somalia.

The Somali crime and safety report states that the Somali average crime rate is high above the US national average. There are many differences between the US and Somalia but the main one is the lack of leadership. With a lack of leadership, violent crimes are commonplace in Somalia and the infrastructure of the country has fallen into ruin. With no society and leader the criminals, there have no repercussions. Just like Jack in the book people with no rules will continue to perform these violent acts.

Human nature strives for leadership, and when it's not there humans strive and lean towards violence and crime. Even if it seems like humans want rules at first when there is no ruler with support from the people, society will eventually collapse. When society does collapse people will act out violent acts for whatever reason when there is no punishment later on. But why is human nature like this, is it reinforcement from society or something ingrained within our DNA?

Mi barrio es Mount Airy. Hace quince años que vivo en Mt. Airy.

*Story starts with are main character in a car talking to his friends*

I'm ready yall do we really have to do this, you keep saying we do and i know Momma still doesn't  have enough for the little ones but no one's starving. Don't y'all know that little B got sick, we need this money. No one knows what he got but it's serious and we ain't got healthcare so it's gonna cost us.

(Pause)

Whatever yo let's just get this over with. Im acting white? What the hell do you mean by that. I'm down to do this because this is necessary, this is for little B it's just i ain't trying to catch my first offense like Pie did.

(Long pause)

Why we even tryin to hit up a KFC they won't have that much cash anyway. Really man we doing this for the chicken, that's the stupidest thing I ever heard. If I go to jail over some stupid ass chicken i’ll be really pissed. Remember what happened to Tank when he went to jail? That fool came out gay and remember what happened to Ricky? When he tried to rob that gas station a gang pulled up on him and shot him straight in the back. Dead instantly. I ain't trying to have that happen to me i'm just trying to deal with little B. What you mean that's a myth i ain't stupid, RJ back there was the one who told me…..whatever. But seriously chicken? Can't we at least rob like a liquor store or something, at least make it a Popeyes they are better  down here in Louisiana than a KFC, it's in their commercial. By the way what's the plan again man i always forget this stuff..

So you're saying that we just gonna roll up point are choppas at the clerk and roll out through the back alleyway? If you remember that's how Tank got caught. How the hell we even gonna escape if the ride is parked in the front. You haven't thought of that? Man I just wanna get this done, how bout we let RJ drive and park the car around back and then we go in and grab the chicken then we get the hell out. How is that a stupid idea? it's better than go in leave the car and run.

(Long pause)

We’ve arrived it's time to get The job done and put food on the table. And can we make sure we do this the right way, if I go to jail my family will really be in trouble. The only reason i'm doin this is because yall know I got laid off. I ain't out here to do anything gang related I'm just trying to make money for little B and quit it with calling me white.

(Semi long pause)

You know what? I don't need this. I got a job before I can get one now. Yall act like you need to do this but ya dont. This type of life ain't fun and it ain't for making money. I had to drop 300 for this damn gun when I could've spent it helpin B get better. It's time for me to go yall to slow for this crime game, peace.

Time cannot be gained - James Adams

Posted by James Adams in English 2 · Pahomov · E Band on Thursday, September 29, 2016 at 6:44 am

“You may delay, but time will not.”-Benjamin Franklin. I have never been good with time, partly because i procrastinate and partly because I lose track of it. The more i grew up the more I understood how time works but I still don’t know if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Being focused on time caused me to be forgetful of other things, but being not focused on time made me late and uncaring.

“Jimmy wake up you’re late for school!”

Oh boy. Here we go again. As soon as I hear those words, I already know that I’m going to get slapped and get water thrown on my face because I’m a heavy sleeper. My Dad takes waking up very seriously for some reason even though we’re usually late so it really doesn’t matter

“Ok ok I get it I’m up!” I exclaim. During my 8th grade year, I was late every day so it wasn’t a surprise when I got woken up like this.

“Were gonna be late get up! If your mom finds out about this, you’re not the only the that will be in trouble,” The worst part about being late wasn’t getting beat up by my Dad or being talked to by the principal or the teacher, but it was my Mom.

“Jimmy this is your 4th lateness in a row. You need to pick it up this is your 47th lateness. You need to realize that being on time is important. It interrupts your learning and everybody else’s, I also need to tell your parents,” My advisor explains. Unfortunately, this information went in one ear and out the other, the only word i heard was parents.

When I got home, I was preparing for the inevitable. I heard the door opening a little earlier than usual and I was not ready.

“‘Beep Beep Beep…’ Jimmy wake up it’s time for practice,” I hear my alarm and my mother at the same time, which means it’s time to wake up for practice again. Fortunately, I did all my homework except for one. Usually, when I do my homework, I do all of it except for one and I have no idea why. What this means is that I do it in the car on my way to practice or at school. This usually works out fine for the most part.

“Jimmy, are you doing your homework in the car again? It looks like you’re not done and we’ve arrived,” my Dad says. Sometimes when you plan things out, it doesn’t work out in the end, and this is a perfect example of that. When I said saving my homework for later usually works, I lied. It never works but almost always I can finish it at school.

“Rockets on three family on six!” It was the end of practice and we did the usual chant. We, unfortunately ended a little late, but what I had was faith. Taking the bus to school is the fastest but I Already knew it was probably going to make me late. I also knew that taking the trolley was going to get me there and was consistent, so I decided to take that.

“Of course I get here at 8:10,” I say with a sigh.

Turns out it didn’t work out. Sometimes when you think things out, time just doesn’t go your way. If only time didn’t flow then you wouldn’t have to worry about being late or early, you could have time for anything you wanted to do, but I don’t know if it would be a good thing or a bad thing.

Mi familia y yo

Somos completos

Mi nombre no es nada

Mi familia es todo

Mi mamá es Africana

Mi papá es Africano

Veo trigo de mi abuela

Saboreo el frito pollo de mi mamá

Olgo música de mi gente

Huelo la comida de mis abuelos

Toco el pollo de una granja

Como con mi familia

Bailo con familia

Estoy todos hermanos

Trabajo en el calor

Somos productos Americanos

Somos Africanos Americanos

Hablamos inglés

La lengua

No somos Africanos

We watched a tv show about internet safety.
1.It was about how to keep safe on the internet and it gave examples of internet tragedy
2.Probably the kid that killed himself because it was sad and surprising
3.Its not important because I didn't feel any different from watching this video so for me it had no affect on how I view the internet
4.I wont
5.Its not
6.Let them learn from mistakes don't guide them

Media slide reflection Adams

I learned from my critique that I shouldn't of put my whole me magazine in my slide. I was actually supposed to have a simple picture with text. I also learned that I should get rid of my name or move it which I did. So for my new slide I have a simple picture with a nice quote thats very easy to see.

Tech Slide presentation
I decided to design my slide the way i did because i wanted my slide to look clean and simplistic. I used color contrast with yellow on black to make it so people notice the title of the slide and get the main point of the slide. I also made the font size of my title big for the same reason

Who am I Online? James Adams

Posted by James Adams in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b2 on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at 12:21 pm

1.We watched a video about awareness for bullying

2.It makes me think that bullying is bad and people should stand up to bullies and not be bystanders

3.A jamaican cricketer comes up when you type in my name

4.I think people perceive me as a jamaican cricketer because thats the only thing the comes up when you type in my name.

5.The goal of internet trolls is to make you feel bad about yourself and to anger you

6.A positive result to online anonymity is that people can't find where you live or where your family lives. A negative result is that if you're applying for a job employers can't find out about you and they might find someone else and think it's you.

My home Network

Posted by James Adams in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b2 on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 1:51 pm
On my network i have 4 xboxs ,4 PCs, 2 tablets, and 3 phones. I didnt really learn much about routers. The one thing i didnt know is they had lines in the ocean and the sent packets over it.I would tell other people not to have too many devices on the network because it hogs bandwith.
