Advanced Essay #4 Problems on the Internet
You ever wonder what cyberbullying was like before it became a high profile case of violence? The cyberbullying we know today does not have the same effect it did in the past. In the 90s cyber bullying was not seen as a form of non physical violence. Believe it or not, being a jerk on the internet used to be considered. Insults were simpler, more benign, and a learning experience. The name was even different in the 90s cyber bullying was called “flaming”.
Flaming was based on having group chats online and when a newbie were to join in the conversation saying “Hey I’m new here, can you tell me what goes on here?” There were stages of flaming and this is the beginning of “flame”. One the first step is done it allowed the other members of the group chat to make a sarcastic joke to the newbie, which in today's terms is trolling. Although some people may considered trolling a bad thing, because of them making offensive remarks. Flaming was not supposed to be what it is seen now, in some cases cyberbullying.
As technology advances, the rate of crime online increases. Specifically speaking hacking has become an even more problem, and cyberattacks. The definition of cyberbullying is the use of electronic communication to bully a person, typically by sending messages of an intimidating or threatening nature. Now this can relate to hacking. The definition of hacking is use a computer to gain unauthorized access to data in a system. Now that you know the definitions, let’s go into examples. An example of cyberbullying is from the profound video of Amanda Todd cyberbullying experience. Throughout the video it mentions several events that occurred to her, however this quote “If you don’t put on a show for me I will send ur boobs. He knew my address, school, relatives, friends, family names.” Amanda Todd was paranoid and did not want to get anybody hurt so she went with the idea and gave the guy a show.
Now flaming is nowhere near the same as cyberbullying. Cyberbullying has lead to physical damages to the person getting bully while flaming did not lead to anything. It was more of a funny group chat as we call it today. Hacking is also one of the reasons why cyberbullying is happening due to people getting into information that is meant to be hidden. Heck even our government can get hacked and let out information that is supposed to be hidden from the american people. There have been multiple movies/school presentations on bullying or cyberbullying. Most of the options at the end they either ask you to take an anonymous survey asking if you are being bullied or if someone is. Another option is saying do not stay silent speak out, and get help. These things do not help because their are still cases of major bullies scenarios. Now I would to propose a bill to make those who are bullying people to pay a fine. Now that may take a while, but it is about time someone takes the extra step.
Now that you know the difference between how the idea of cyberbullying was in the 90s compared to now it is a major contrast. Suicide rates have been increasing due to stress, school, bullying, cyberbullying or for even more reasons. Flaming did not lead to any problems besides the fact of getting you can say pranked. Flaming was designed for people to have a fun group chat and mess with the newbies, however cyberbullying may lead to hackers finding info and blackmail the person into doing things they may not want to do like Amanda Todd. You can sort of consider flaming the start of cyberbullying. There were problems but legislations were not made until the nearing of 2008-2010.
Advanced Essay #3 Opportunities
Introduction:
For my essay I wanted to talk about how cultural background affects on how you are viewed in society. My goal is for my classmates to understand how us different skin color different backgrounds are viewed and what opportunities we get. I enjoyed making this piece. The process was way different than I expected. I did not think
Essay:
Who would to say being born from 2 undocumented immigrants would be such a hassle. So much pressure on my shoulders, looking for opportunities they missed out on. Learning the dominant language in the country, english. Parents don’t even want to teach me about our culture-I mean their culture. Americanization is what decided my name, my mother and father thought Jonathan was a perfect name for a non-white kid could have to fit in in order meet their expectations. However they gave me their last name to also show I’m latino. Saldivar not pronounced saldvador or saldevar, etc. Jonathan or Johnny that’s what I go by now. Preferably Johnny. Your name is a white boy’s name, however your last name fits you well it has that spanish tone. Make up your mind, am I a latino or a wannabe white boy. At some point I would wear the same clothes everyday or at least pants and sweater. Everyone would questionly ask me “
Johnny why do you wear those clothes everyday?” That’s looking down on me, making me feel like more at a disadvantage. I remember reading an article talking about social standing in america and it asserts that “Many American immigrants imagine their new country to be a land of opportunity, but those opportunities, it seems, are not available to everyone equally.” I agree with the quote. I felt at a disadvantage because I’m not white, second where I am placed on the ladder of society. Mexicans, we are seen as immigrants, as minority's. The first phrase when people find out I’m mexican. “You’re an illegal immigrant! You’re latino? You must be mexican. You jumped the border?”
That’s only the beginning. My self esteem crumbled before my very eyes. Self esteem- confidence in one’s own worth or ability; self respect. I lost the respect I once had for myself. I eventually started making jokes about my culture, dressing in ridiculous clothing. I’m great at math, however I didn’t bother trying anymore. One of my teachers noticed a difference in me while being in the class. The teacher eventually came to me and pulled me to the side. “Johnny?” worriedly asked my teacher. “What? Is there something wrong?” I asked quietly. “Do you notice a difference in you?” I asked my teacher. “No not really.” I responded. “Johnny!” (Silence roamed the room.) “I can’t believe you don’t realize what’s wrong with you?” my teacher exclaimed. I raised my voice as I said a word within my sentence. “Why should I try in this class if I’m settled for a job as a gardener, or selling drugs. Better yet why am I even learning this language for christ sake, can I just speak like my parents. Also I’m sorry that I am not whi(te)-” I left the room before finishing my sentence. A sense of deja vu appeared. I once read the story of and some random kid quoted a sentence in the story. “Only I feel sorry because hes all alone and has no frends.” This quote reminded that some people are not offered the same education, some teachers may care to help everyone, however there are some that only helps those who they think will succeed. The kid didn’t have the best pronunciation, I don’t blame him since he’s also a minority.” This was the opportunity he got, he didn’t care about getting the best education like the rich kids got and take it for granted. There has been many definitions of the american dream. The most common one is everyone gets an equal opportunity to achieve success from hard, determination. This dream is false, hard work can lead to being stress, burning yourself out. He just wanted to learn even if it was a bad school, education will lead to better future. The american dream is not what it’s meant to be. I walked up to him because he clearly was talking about me. “Hey dude.” “Wat?” “I wanted to know if you wanted to hangout sometime” I asked shyly. “Shore” he responded. After that day I somewhat see myself becoming the guy who I once was. My friend was from the black community living in a beat up house. I felt bad for him. One day I was walking up to pay see him and these kids were talking badly about my friend so I decided to join the conversation that was happening between them. “This kid can barely speak english haha. No wonder your dad left when you were born. Now you’re stuck here being a nobody.” “Hey why are you talking to him like that? What's does it matter to you, you lowlife immigrant.” I wanted to help but I couldn't I was frozen. Staring at my friend getting tortured. I didn't have the confidence to step up.

Advanced Essay #1 Who is the real me?
Lights on Lights off Johnny! My mother angrily said. This was not the first time this has happened. “Why are you still awake?” “You need to rest” “Wake up we are going somewhere”. Those are my memories of my mother. The switching of the lights are the same as my emotions. Lately my mother had enough. THOSE ELECTRICAL CURRENTS MAY KEEP THAT DEVICE ALIVE, BUT IT WILL NOT KEEP YOU ALIVE! mother shouted. My mother never understood me. I was just a kid trying to fit in. Making my personality like what I see. A smooth greased hair back greaser, or a jacket wearing football jock, or a glasses wearing know it all nerd. Trying to fit into a school where I had to choose who I wanted to hang out with. I could not fit with the others. So I would switch through them each an every day. It eventually became second nature to me. Till this day I still switch my personalities. I do not feel comfortable to show the real me, even though I do at times mess up and reveal the real me. A quiet male, not wanting to be near people. I remember the first time when I entered this school education system. I did not know where to place myself. I had the name Jonathan Saldivar, however I did not know if it felt right for me. Throughout my life I would just ignore that name and instead go by Johnny Saldivar. I felt like my name would be a name that will go far. Mostly everyone would ask me why do you not go by Jonathan? Why do you go by Johnny? I would just stay being quiet. Words may not be said out loud, but no one ever said they can not be said in my head. I always have judgments on everyone whether they are a good or bad. I am just another human being. When it comes to my talents/skills I tend to spark and when it comes to a time where I do not find myself confident I tend to hide and stay back. “Johnny you should participate more”. “Johnny you are a great student I just wish you would talk more in class”. I do not talk more because if I am not confident and answer the question wrong then I will like I embarrassed myself. I want to learn but I do not like failing. Whenever I have to speak in public I feel like a turtle or snail going into their shell for protection. Social anxiety puts a me in a dark spot where their is no light. “Johnny! Are you alright?” Yeah I am even though I stay looking down at the floors tile. The dirty that is on the floor reminds me of how I can not find a way to break out of this cage I am in. It creates an image within my head thinking what I could be doing instead. I do not like talking to people, I feel a heavy weight pulling me down so I can not speak. I open my mouth but the words will not come out. “Johnny!” Yes I responded. “Why are you not talking.” I just lost myself in my thoughts sorry.
Decisions
How do humans make their decisions? Many people would like to say they do what they want and don’t care what other people think, but they are lying. For some reason, they are created by peer pressure, trying to get a viewers vote, from fear or even from embarrassment. They tend to impress the folks by saying something, just by an appearance or their behaviors, instead of the actual truth. Honesty does not play a key.
In chapter 1 of “Lord of the flies” by William Golding, the children, after experiencing a devastating plane crash meet up on a part of the island. They decide to hold a poll for a leader or in the books case “chief.” “This toy of voting was almost as pleasing as the conch. Jack started to protest but the clamor changed from the general wish for a chief to an election by acclaim of Ralph himself. None of the boys could have found a good reason for this; what intelligence had been shown was traceable to Piggy, while the most obvious leader was Jack. But there was a stillness about Ralph as he sat that marked him out: there was his size, and attractive appearance; and most obscurely, yet the most powerfully, there was the conch, The being that had blown that, had sat waiting for them on the platform with the delicate thing that balanced on his knees, was set apart.” (Pg. 22) This quote from Lord of the flies shows the kids thoughts on who should be “chief”. They chose Ralph as chief because he was the person who blew the conch. With the following lines “Him with the shell.” (Pg.22) “Ralph! Ralph!” (Pg.22) “Let him be chief with the trumpet-thing.” (Pg.22) The kids did not take the time to understand and analyze who fits the role of “chief”, but instead decided based on appearance.
The example from Lord of the flies closely relates to the election that is currently happening. According to the article by editor Carolina Moreno at Huffington Post. The article quotes Donald Trump’s statement that “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re sending you/ They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re bringing rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” When Donald Trump made this remark he received attention, both positive and negative. This is how he got noticed, people agreed with him and his opinions. However he’s only saying the things he said to impress the people of America in order to get on the ballot and win votes for the presidential election. At the same time there is no evidence showing immigrants committing more crime than native-born Americans. However first-generation immigrants are pre disposed to lower crime rates than native-born Americans. Thus, showing Donald Trump is just making his decision or movement based on impression.
A moment in Lord of the flies that shows a decision being made from being under pressure is when Ralph began wanting to leave the island, however Jack’s plans interferes with Ralphs. He makes rules because they spotted a ship, however Jack’s “group” went to go hunt and forgot about maintaining the fire lit. This made Ralph feel like he missed out on a chance of a lifetime. Ralph says to his followers in chapter 5, “And another thing. We nearly set the whole island on fire. And we waste time, rolling rocks, and making little cooking fires. Now I say this and make it a rule, because I’m chief: We won’t have a fire anywhere but on the mountain. Ever.” (pg.81) This shows that Ralph was pressured by his surroundings. It frustrated Ralph, which prompted him to make the decision to make rules. After seeing the ship and missing the chance at an early escape of the island, Ralph felt the way he did because Jack refused to obey Ralph’s commands.
The same situation happened during the upcoming on World War 2. The United States of America signed a treaty with Germany so they wouldn’t speak about what happened and to stay in peace, however from embarrassment Adolf Hitler plan secret meetings known as the nazi party. During these nazi party meetings Adolf Hitler would speak and his words inspired the german people to follow his commands, especially putting the blame on jews because it was there fault that germany lost during the first world war. After some time Adolf Hitler became the dictator of Germany. After quite some time Adolf Hitler made a name for himself after invading poland, and killing a large amount of jews. It reached to a point where the U.S had to step in and sent reinforcement into Germany to put a stop to this war. Adolf Hitler reached a corner in his plans and instead of paying for his crime he killed himself. The decision was based on fear. According to History.com Adolf Hitler quotes that he was becoming paranoid, “Doctor what is the best way to kill myself?” Adolf Hitler made the decision he made because he needed an escape route, especially with full forces coming into Germany at both sides west and east, this is why a treaty was later created making the U.S and Russia keep watch over Germany.
In conclusion we can see that both Lord of the flies and the real world examples show that decisions can be made by countless of things however these are the main ones that sparks out. From fear through good intentions we can tell that people's decision making can't be countered and would have to deal with hiding the exact truth from each other.

Life Hack
(Grabs controller) This game, that game, almost every game deals with hackers, lag switchers. Don’t get me started with these consoles (Looks at gaming consoles). These petty gaming consoles get hacked or shut down for a day due to their poor security system. Last year, Playstation and Xbox or known as Microsoft got shut down on christmas day. A hacking organization known as Lizard squad hack into the security system and shut the connection to play online for the day and they claimed to that this was their doing. If these companies gain so much money for their production why do they have such a poor security system? Furthermore these companies gain a portion of games created for their console.
(Faces the direction of the computer) Hacking organizations, I’m not sure if I should be fed up with them or not. Not every hacking organizations are bad. They have created code names such as Black, Gray, and White hats. Which stands for what they do, Black and White hats are the opposite of each other. Black hats are groups of hackers who hack for their personal gain, to get attention, for their personal amusement. While white hats are groups of hackers who hack for other gains, such as they may steal money but they donate it to a charity for people who need it more they're more like vigilantes. Gray hats are neutral.
Why the hacking? Aren’t games meant to be FUN!? (Exhales) Even though I may get mad because of the hackers but I can see why they hack in videogames. It’s like a hateful comment on a youtube video, and people arguing with the comment. They simply hack/cheat to get something they want. an awesome piece of gear in a game, most people do it because they lack skill the game others tend to hack because they just want to see what it’s like. Others just simply do it to piss people around the world off just like that hateful comment on youtube. But why hack? There’s other options, get carried, improve in the game, get friends to help, etc. Most people who play videogames normally get skilled at the game and enjoy the game, until they meet a group of hackers. They rage, hate the game and eventually rage quit.
(Grabs the keyboard) It’s not that difficult to hack is it? Just a number amount of codes to get into the system, and patience. Playstation and Microsoft make billions of dollars with their production, and yet they have this weak ass security system. To most hackers it’s like stealing candy from a baby. (Turns on monitor) Maybe I should try hacking, or see how it is for myself. I can’t I just can’t do it, as a rightful player as a player who gets things done the way it should I shall not fall into that path. (Turns off monitor, and pushes keyboard away) If I do this then I can’t complain so much about hackers because they’re in almost every game whether it’s console, pc, or portable console. The virtual world and reality are so different. Security system should be improved, I didn’t decide to pay this amount of money to buy this console, or game, just to experience hackers ruining the fun.NO ILP (11-12-15)
Spanglish
“Ma quiero comer” Yo dijé
“¿Qué?” said my mother
“Yo steven go downstairs and tell mom I’m hungry” I said
“No you go downstairs and tell her” Steven responded
“Mira puto vas a ir downstairs y de le que quiero comer” I angrily said
Steven quietly said “Okay”
Ever since I started speaking spanish which was when I was about 6-7 years old. Me and my sister Tania would speak to each other in english, however halfway through our sentences we would speak in spanish then switch back to english to finish off the sentence. When my younger brother started to speak, me and tania would get him to adapt to the way we spoke because we are bilingual. My mother Sonia and my father Jose got frustrated because this became a habit. He liked that we were getting comfortable speaking yet he was disappointed because he didn’t want us speaking like this. One day me and my family went grocery shopping and Steven, Tania, and I would speak the way we did at home. We would speak wherever we went. These kids who looked to be about our age gave us sideways looks because we would switch languages every so often and one of them would get mad. He approached us and said angrily, “Shut the fuck up you fucking spanish speaking hicks”. The real definition of the word hick is a person who lives in the country, regarded as being unintelligent or provincial. The word hick in my opinion means a really loud hispanic person. At that moment, Steven, Tania, and I replied with, “We’re not hicks”, we just switch languages halfway through the sentence because we’re used to it. The guy left, and we continued our conversation. This got me quite mad because he was judging us by the way we spoke instead of getting to know us. This is my accent or my way of speaking,
“How was it at the escuela?” Steven asked
“Todo went fine”, replied tania
I replied with,
“Can we try to stop doing this language swap halfway through the sentence because it’s kind of bothering people, even our own parents.”
The next day, was the first day of us trying to stop speaking the way we did. This is how it went...
“B-bu-go-bue this is hard”, I angrily said
“Yo know”, steven said shyly
“Me heads hurts”, Tania replied
Eventually we all took speech class during elementary school to help us stop, however things may have gotten even worse. There were other hispanics just like Steven, Tania, and I, but they knew how to maintain one language while speaking. However they knew more curse words than we did. We only knew puto, so we eavesdropped on their conversation while they were spoke spanish.
“Mira cabron necesitas a se mi tarde”, said one guy
The guy turned around and noticed us,
“And I don’t like your fucking language you fucking hicks.” He left angrily. When we heard that we ran so we wouldn’t get in trouble. After a while, we came together and discussed what we heard.
“Are we hicks?”, asked Steven
“I don’t think we are”, me and tania responded.
Later that day we went home and asked our parents
“Are we hicks?” I asked
“No it’s that people just assume and label us just because they see one person be a hick then assume we are as well”, said Sonia
“We aren’t hicks, but let me find out you guys are becoming hicks”,
said Jose angrily. We went straight to my room and talked about the way we spoke. We realized we didn’t want to continue switching languages in the middle of our sentences, so we did our best to stop. The next morning we woke up and greeted each other.
“Good morning Steven and Tania”, I said
They both replied with
“Good morning Jonathan”.
We were happy that we stop speaking the way we used to, little did we know it came back. We hated the fact that we spoke like this and this is why we were in speech class for the rest of elementary school. We never got the chance to improve our english because our english was awful due to our tongues. By tongues I mean the way we speak is from our tongues. So our tongues are bilingual and used to either using accents or not using accents. I remember I couldn't pronounce certain words because of the way vowels were said. I’ll also extend a letter or so. At the end of the day Tania, Steven, and I got the hang of staying in one language and we at times tend to do it just to joke around. However we still struggle to say some words but we take step by step.
One Life Gone, Makes History
My topic is about Teen Suicide. The reason why I’m interested in this particular topic is because I tried to commit suicide before. Just because I attempted to kill myself, really does not explain why I’m really interested in this topic. I’m interested in this topic because ever since I found myself a reasonable way out, I feel like helping out others who struggle to find that escape. Seeing someone who goes through problems and not have any type of help ticks me off at times. The reason why this is important is because teens around the world have given up their lives without seeing the further future. Approximately 4,600 lives are lost each year. The top three method are 45% firearm, 40% suffocation, and 8% poisoning. Now teen suicide is the eighth-leading cause of death overall in the U.S. and it is the third-leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15-24 years old. It is the fourth-leading cause of death for kids between the ages of 10-14 years old. Alright you may think just because it’s in the third/fourth/eighth-leading cause of death shows that it isn’t important, but it is because it may not be the first-leading cause of death but it’s at least in the top ten-leading cause death. Incase you were interested in helping here are some teen suicide warning signs: Disinterest in favorite extracurricular activities, Substance abuse, including the use of alcohol and drugs, Behavioral problems, Sleep changes, Eating changes, Etc. Most of these signs may not appear of out the thin blue, most people will keep it hidden like I did. This is important for you guys to know because for all we know they maybe a person whos thinking about committing suicide and you have a split chance to stop them. It is also important for you guys because just in case the person isn’t your friend you should at least go out try to stop them of thinking about it.Most people will intend to get closer to the person whos thinking about committing suicide, but that may make the person uncomfortable or more liking disturbed. Below you’ll find a picture of a suicide prevention ribbon. They’re two types of ribbon created for suicide prevention awareness. What I hope to learn about continuing doing this topic is hopefully finding out records of how many lives have been taken in the past decade for different categories one for the ages between 10-14, another for 15-24, and compared if the ives have increased or decreased between each group set. I wonder if there are any other type of signs about suicidal people besides the list I read. I also wonder how many suicidal people go out and ask for help instead if staying hidden. I also wonder how many suicidal people got acknowledge after the death. Through this project I hope I get the chance to see the data records of how many suicidal people turn themselves into a mental state hospital or someone helping out and turning in the suicidal person into a mental state hospital or going to therapist.

Johnny's Slide
¡Viva México!
The picture I chose for my slide has a nice complex view of the mexican flag. I decided to make this slide simply because in case you didn’t know my family is from México and yes I’m mexican! In my me magazine that I created for english class I wrote about my family trip and their struggle to get to america. So with this background it shows how proud I have become of my race. The controller is their because I play videogames so I looked for a picture that was able to combine the mexican flag and a controller.Combining two things I love dearly.
