Capstone

Posted by Kenisha Hood in Capstone - Sanchez on Friday, May 31, 2013 at 5:51 pm

Student Name: Kenisha Hood

Mentors: Xinyi Zhang, Nyeema Martin

Capstone Summary:

Produced a fashion show and worked as documenter and videographer as well as create a backdrop & red carpet.

Project Abstract:

For my senior capstone project, I produced a Fashion show. In the beginning of  the year, another student and I decided to do a combined senior capstone. Her part was making the clothes and the models and my part was the event. In the beginning of the school year, we got together SLA students who were interested in fashion to join our fashion club. I documented the fashion club from the beginning of the process and edited and created an introduction video for the audience. I also designed and created my own backdrop for the fashion show as well as a red carpet for hollywood effect. I handled the lighting, camera shots, and photography as well as the projector. I chose to do this capstone because it was combining two of my interests which is fashion and videographer and I thought it would be cool to do something that was close to a technical producer. Another reason I chose to do this capstone is because in the future I plan on working in the medical field and I know it takes plenty of collaboration and communication to be successful just as it does in a fashion show and to be exposed to the environment of a fashion would give off the same effect  as working in the medical field. I've been in digital video class since the beginning of my junior year and has worked with previous projects of RoughCut productions. RoughCut productions is a film organization that Mr.Herman, a teacher at SLA, runs. Being apart of that organization, we've worked on numerous amounts of projects which in turn has exposed me to video graphing and documenting. When creating a film, it also takes a lot of collaboration to make a film successful. With that being said, I was used to filming and never got a chance to actually learn how to edit and create final products. One of my main goals for this project was to have a successful show and to explore documenting and videographer.

Room 4 Debate - Better Safe Then Sorry

Posted by Kenisha Hood in American Government - Herman on Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at 11:50 am
The argument of whether or not the u.s.a p.a.t.r.i.o.t act is still needed is only a matter of placing safety and security on a balance scale along with freedom and privacy as well as a matter of being conservative or being liberal. In my opinion, there are many reasons why we still need the Patriot act. Some people may believe the act is interfering and messing with the American beliefs of privacy but I believe it is safer to invade someone's privacy then to end up dealing with another successful terrorist attack. Some people believe that the patriot act can only result in the government receiving too much power and having too much access. Beings though because of the patriot act 15 terrorist plots were disrupted, I feel as though America would be a lot more safer with the act then without. Although it is believed that the patriot act was/is being used for things other then preventing terrorist acts such as putting homeless people off the streets, I'd still believe that things could be much worse without it. The only reason someone could have a major problem with the patriot act was if they were up to something themselves. If you're not up to something, then why worry about the government worrying about you? There is no doubt on the patriot act being successful on what it was supposed to do which was prevent terrorist acts and that's why I believe we still need the u.s.a patriot act.

Enemy Of State

Posted by Kenisha Hood in American Government - Herman on Saturday, September 15, 2012 at 2:11 pm
The way the government is portrayed in this film is very sneaky, stalker-ish and selfish as well. They have access to a lot of information and they go to the extreme to get information but that's only when they're the ones who really need it. This film made me fear for my own privacy beings though how this film showed how an individual citizens' privacy is not respected what so ever. I find the amount of power and accessibility the government has to be disturbing having the satellite cameras the most disturbing aspect about it.The things the NSA agents were doing such as putting video cameras around Robert's house and bugs in some of his items to follow him and tapping into the other guy's phone calls seemed a bit extreme. I believe the level of access the government should have to citizens' personal info is the amount that the citizens allow them to have. I don't believe the government has the right to access someone's personal information without their consent. Individuals' freedoms can/should be restricted for safety of community when their dealing with a real criminal, not just save themselves for trouble. This films makes me think of what else could the government be possible hiding from Americans.

Blog Post 1: September 11 Shorts

Posted by Kenisha Hood in Digital Video -Senior - Herman on Thursday, September 13, 2012 at 10:15 am
This is a response to the last video with the death lady. In the class discussion, I noticed a lot of people got the impression that the end meant that you shouldn't leave the house mad at someone you love but I think the message of this film was much more deeper then that, but I'm not sure how. I like how we were able to feel what it was like to be in the shoes of the woman in the video since she was deaf and then how in the middle of the film, we were able to hear normally and then it went right back. I was confused on the part about the woman in the film talking about her hearing voices. It made me think that the guy in the film really was not returning home after he left for work. Either way, returning or not, I'm not really not sure how I would feel if he did return v.s if he did not come back alive. What stood out most to me was the audio and I think it was really creative how the director took advantage of that. I believe that the fact that she was deaf and a mute had a lot to do with the message of the film. I think it reflects on America in general. Overall, this film stood out the the most to me and it affected me the most.

Blog Post #5: Música en Colombia

Posted by Kenisha Hood in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at 10:04 pm
Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?
I spoke with a male from Columbia named Alejandro. I did not choose this person, this person chose me and I seen that spanish was his native language so it worked well for the both us beings though I wanted to learn/work on my spanish and he wanted to learn/work on his english.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?
I learned about his favorite type of music and what type of songs he likes and I found out that he is a fan of a band called "Def Leppard" and he talked about what songs he likes. I found it pretty funny how since I said I liked music and I am from philadelphia, he sent me a youtube video of a music video of a song called "Streets of Philadelphia" by Bruce Springsteen. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4z2DtNW79sQ&ob=av2e)

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?
This interaction helped me move towards achieving my personal goal because I wanted to learn about people in other countries music tastes and not only did I learn about their music taste but I shared with them the music we listen to in America. He didn't know who Nicki Minaj was so I sent him the "Super Bass" video and he liked it.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?
I asked questions about what type of music he liked.

What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)
I think next time, I need to work on asking my partner to speak in spanish because I always give up and start speaking english whenever they start to speak english because I understand that just like me, they also want to learn a new language so I have to be fair.

Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with Delisio from Argentina because she was willing to chat with me.

What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

I learned about what type of movies she likes and I also learned about the movies of Argentina. I guess I learned that my last name isn't very common, she thought it was a nickname.

How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

This interaction helped me move towards achieving my personal goal because I already learned about Argentina and I wanted more information about the country and I got it.

What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?'

What I did well was that I asked the questions that I wanted to ask on previous blog posts that deal with movies.
  • What specifically do you need to improve on? (Quote specific things you said or did and what you would have done or said if you could do it again)
I need to work on reading what I write before  I hit "enter" because I kept repeating a question that didn't make sense. I wanted to say "Where are you from" but I got it mixed up with a different question so spell/grammar checking in general before I speak.

Blog Post 3: Televisión En la segunda parte: Ecuador

Posted by Kenisha Hood in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, May 9, 2012 at 8:19 am

    • What did you learn about your partner?

For this blog post, I added two people instead of one to make the post more insightful. I talked with Christian and Guillermo about the television they watch in Ecuador. Christian talked more of American Series while Guillermo talked more about Spanish series but also watches both. Christian is a fan of "Friends" just as I am and we talked about different episodes.
    • What did you learn from them?

I learned about a comedy show called "Aqui No Hay Quien Viva" which is comedy series. Guillermo watches this series where he lives. He also taught me that "hay" meant there.
    • What did you learn about yourself?

I learned that what I like to watch on television will not always be the same as others. Others might not enjoy these shows like I do.
    • What were you surprised about?

I was surprised at the fact that American series do get watched in other countries such as Ecuador.
    • What are you proud of?

I am proud that I got to achieve my goal of researching what type of television is watched in other countries. I am also proud of the fact that I used the dictionary less this time and I talked more on what I knew.
    • What follow-up questions do you have?

Do other countries watch the same cartoons as Americans?

    • What will you improve on for next time?  How?  s

Next time,I will try to improve on leaving the conversation better. I kind of cut it short beings though class was over and I had to shut my laptop. I will work on a better"leaving" technique.

    Conversación 2: Televisión en Lima,Peru

Posted by Kenisha Hood in Spanish 3 - Gierke on Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at 3:11 pm
What is television like in Lima, Peru?

    • What did you learn about your partner?

I learned that my partner, Felipe, is from Lima, Peru. I also learned that Felipe likes to watch American Series. He doesn't like reality shows, including the Kardashians. He likes comedies and also serious shows. He likes 2 and a Half men, just like I do. He watches American Idol and is routing for Jessica Sanchez to win.
    • What did you learn from them?

I learned that American shows do get watched in Lima, Peru. I thought that they would have their own television series to watch but American series are aired there.
    • What did you learn about yourself?

I learned that what I like to watch on television will not always be the same as others. Others might not enjoy these shows like I do.
    • What were you surprised about?

I was surprised at the fact that American series do get watched in other countries such as Peru.

Next time, I will try to move into that conversation a little more easier. It seemed weird to jump to a subject like that. I might chose a subject to talk about that is more broad because the conversation seemed a bit awkward.

    Learning about Argentina :D

    • Who did I speak with and why did I choose that person?

I spoke with a guy named Francisco who is from/lives in Argentina in a city called Buenos aires. I met this person through livemocha.com. I technically did not choose this person, but I am glad I did because they taught me a lot about Argentina.
    • What did you learn about them? What did you learn from them?

The person I talked to was very nice and they answered all my questions I needed to know about they're country and they also told me about themselves as well. They told me how the streets aren't really that safe and there's a lot of crimes/thefts. As for the education, neighboring countries come to learn in their country. They have a lot of public schools as well. The country of where he is from is where the "Tango" (dance)came from. This guy is also in a rock band  (He's the guitarist) and him and his band play at clubs and events. Overall, this was a nice person to chat with.
    • How did this interaction help you move towards achieving your personal goal?

It help me learn a lot about the country then what I would learn in a text book or a website on the internet.
    • What specifically did you do well according to your goals/expectations?

I kept the conversation flowing and we had a good conversation overall.

    Conversation Goals

    - Keep going with the conversation without stoping or saying "Umm" a lot.

    - Make the conversation flow better and not stumble over words I do not know how to pronounce.

    - Learn how to use conjugations better and make sure I am using them correctly.

I want to know more about the spanish speaking countries and I think it is better to learn from them instead of something read on the internet or text book.

What is normal day in your country?

    Reflection Paper

Posted by Kenisha Hood in English 3 - Pahomov on Friday, March 30, 2012 at 2:10 pm

For our group’s projects, there were plenty of downfalls but there were also some successes along the way. For example, when we first started planning what we were going to do for our project, everything sounded as if it was going to go well. In the beginning, we wanted to first go around the city and pay homeless people to do an interview with us but we then seen how that could be a problem beings though some homeless people may feel offended to the idea. We then thought of another idea, which was to visit homeless shelters and food distributions. When we visited one of the homeless shelters, we thought it was a hospice because of the sign in the window. We asked one of the few guys who were coming in and out of the building what exactly was the building for and who exactly lived there and the man had said it were for homeless men who were trying to work their way out of homeless. We thought that connected to our slogan since our slogan was  “Homeless not Hopeless”. We then wanted to set up something there so that we could buy them something to eat in exchange for interview questions. The director agreed to let us make sandwiches for them while we interview them and he gave us a set time. Beings though NHD took longer then we expected, we missed the time that the Director told us to come and he was not answering his phone. Another issue we faced was that we wanted to buy stickers with our slogan on it but we couldn’t purchase them in time so we brought posters from staples instead. One of the successes in this project was our fundraising bake sale. We wanted to raise money so that we could buy food for the homeless people who we interviewed and my group nearly sold everything and made a lot of money from it. In the end, our group managed to get interviews with homeless people. Ways that we got our issue out to people in Philadelphia was that we made posters with our slogans on it, both for the city and to put around in SLA as well. Also, we made a website explaining what our organization is and how to help and we also put the stories of the homeless people on the website as well.

    1. The assignment was to create a video about relationships using the requirements need such as 10 vocab words and different tenses. Our group decided to do a bachelorette theme video because we thought we could be creative with the idea and explore different ideas.

    2. From this project, I learned new vocabulary. I also learned how to use the perfect present tense and when to use it.

    3. I love our final product. The editing, the audio, and it is also hilarious.

    4. If I could do the project all over again, I would like to mimic a different reality show such as Jerry Springer or Maury.

    This I Believe: Originality What?

Posted by Kenisha Hood in English 3 - Pahomov on Friday, December 2, 2011 at 9:32 am
"Be Yourself" well, what if one cannot? Trends and "what's in" is constantly being built off what was "in" before. From 1980's and 1990's, snapbacks were the popular accessary and was apart of the people of that time's attire. As of 2011, teenagers are bringing back snapbacks as if they created something new. Fashion is recycle by the minute and are based on old trends to create new ones.

Clothes are not the only thing that is recycled in this generation. Slang words such as "dope" which was started in the 1970's is being used and abused by most teenagers in this generation. Famous rapper, Drake, came out with an album titled "October's Very Own" and on that album was a song called "The Motto". Throughout the song, Drake explains that his motto is "YOLO" which is an acronym meaning "You Only Live Once". Teenagers are using this acronym as if Drake created this new rule to live by when he only simply took an old quote and made it into his words.

This generation of teenagers are known to follow and take in what everyone else is doing. The fact that they follow is not their fault because everything that is out now has been recycled from the past. Before one says, "Be Original" they should first think, "Well,How original am I?"

For this project, our spanish class had to create a song in spanish about where we come from. I learned more spanish vocabulary and how to work iMovie more. I am proud of my final product because I made a song in spanish and made a music video for it as well. If I could do it over again, I would change the words of the song to make it flow better because that was one of the things I had trouble with.

     Lyrics:

    Me encanta mi ciudad

    Me encanta mi ciudad

    Mucho amor por mi ciudad

    Reflection:
I am proud that I made my first song in spanish and I managed to get all the lyrics done. I do not anticipate on having to change anything before recording my song. In my song, I talked about the food of Philadelphia and how it is. I decided to talk about these things because they are the things I know most since I have been here since birth. The song Im putting my lyrics to are "Moment For Life".

Parents often set "Invisible boundaries" and except their child to have known better of what to do in a situation.

    Language Essay

“Ugh, we got drama next. Kill me now.” I said.

“Why you don’t like drama class? Its actually fun.” said my friend.

“I mean like, I like the class, but it’s just, well I don’t know.”

“I think its cause you don’t talk much”

“What you mean? I always talk around ya’ll?

“Oh true, but well never mind.”

    “Hmmm, ok.”

That was the end of the conversation, but still my mind pondered about what my friends exactly meant by me not talking much. I know that I do act shy sometimes, but that’s only around people who I don’t know or don’t feel comfortable around. In class, I usually do not raise my hand because my language changes when I’m talking to my friend on the side, and when I am speaking in front of my class. When I speak in front of a lot of people, my voice seems to get lower and I begin to rush my words. My mother often tells me that whenever I have an exciting story to tell, I began to talk really fast, but I never notice it. Drama class just began, and I had to perform my monologue in front of the whole class. As soon as I got on stage, I could already feel my throat tightening up. I felt my mouth get dry as Introduced myself. “My name is Kenisha and I’m playing a girl named Buffy from Scary Movie 2.” As I looked down into the audience, many faces were staring right back at me, and I suddenly got nervous. I tried to speak, but nothing would come out. “Kenisha come on, go head and start your scene”, shouted voices from the audience. Even though the comments that were shouted from the audience should have encouraged me, it actually made me feel worst. I attempted to speak again, but my words came out dry and cracked. Overall, my monologue turned out to be terrible, which brought my grade down. As soon as I got in the car, I told my mother what was going on.

“Mom, can you take me out of drama class?” I asked.

“For what? I thought you liked it?” asked my mother.

“I do like it, but I just can’t handle it anymore. I always seem to mess up performances and that is hurting my grade.”

    “Well, what’s exactly the problem?”

“Well, when I get in front of the class to perform, I get shy and then my voice changes which messes up my whole performance, and I don’t know what to do about it.”

“Ard, we will work on it. So you’re staying in drama.”

“Ughh, ard mom. Don’t get mad if I fail.”

All that week, my mom was pushing me to do better. That encouraged me to push myself as well. I practiced in front of friends, family members, and even in the hallways where random people walked by. It was the day to perform, and I felt more confident. I ended up doing my scene right and my teacher said he was proud of me.

According to James Baldwin, “ The price for this is the acceptance, and achievement, of one’s temporal identity.” He believes that the reason people usually change the way they talk around others is just for their acceptance at the time. I was looking for the acceptance of my mother, classmates, and my teacher. When I thought that I couldn’t receive acceptance from them, I wanted to quit. As I worked more on it, my confidence built up and I gained the ability to speak in front of others. I still get a little bit nervous but I still improved. People speak around others based on how confident they are. When I am around my friends, I am confident and I know that they will not judge me. If I try to speak in front of people I don’t know, I feel uncomfortable; I lose confidence and my voice changes. A person’s language or the way they speak changes based on the comfort level of the speaker.
