Quarter Three Benchmark

Approximating/Finding Areas Under Curves

By Nathan Kamal and Rick Kinard

Hello! Welcome to our calculus benchmark. This qfjgoogroduction to integrals, and methods to approximate the area under a curve. The assignment was to select a set of data from any real-world situation with an independent and dependent variable, the dependent variable being a rate. We chose acceleration, the relationship between velocity and time, using a set of data collected from a 2010 Artega GT. Below is a v/t chart and graph.

Now that we can visualize our data in the form of a graph, we can find the area under the curve over a given interval to calculate distance. Because a distance/time function is the derivative function of velocity/time function, we can use integrals to find how far the car has travelled, by using a t/v graph (in this case, the graph is actually TIME as a function of VELOCITY, due to the fact that time is a fixed, independent variable). We can approximate the area by using trapezoids and rectangles.

Plan of Action How-To

Thesis: The environment that one grows up in has an affect on one’s sexual orientation.

What thesis-related questions to study?

  • What is sexual orientation?
  • How is sexual orientation determined?
  • Can one change their sexual orientation? Why/why not?
  • Is homosexuality a mental disorder ?
  • Is homosexuality passed down through genetics
  • What causes homosexuality?

What data might be relevant to collect? (link to sources in your AB in this section, if applicable)

  • Statistic/survey linking child abuse and sexuality
  • Statistic/survey linking sexuality of parents and children
  • Statistic/survey linking homosexuality sexuality of identical twins
  • Research done on brain function of homosexuals
  • Research done on genetic of homosexuals compared to heterosexual
  • Research done on the causes of sexual orientation

How would I analyze the results?

I believe the environment and lifestyle one lives has a impact on their sexual orientation. If the from the data about brain functions show that homosexuals and a health heterosexual are similar, it will rule of the possibility of homosexuality being considered mental illness. If the research on genetics and the statistic/survey linking sexuality of parents and children show it now genetic, I can rule out the argument of it being a disorder passed down for parent to child. If the statistic/survey of homosexuality sexuality and identical twins don’t seem to show any trends it cans also rule out the genetics argument because identical twins has very similar biological make ups.

Boeree, George. "General Psychology Sexual Orientation." Sexual Orientation. N/A, N/A. Web. 1 Nov 2011. <http://webspace.ship.edu/cgboer/sexualorientation.html>.

This article is about biology and genetic and how a people behaviors are based off of them. It states that men with less testosterone tend to look and act somewhat more like women, and women with more testosterone than other women tend to look and act somewhat more like men. It also go on to say there is no direct link from testosterone to homosexuality. The helps support my topic because even though the genetic the genetic structure of a person my have some effect on a person’s sexual behavior it isn’t the cause of homosexuality.

This article’s information is mainly on puberty. Is stated a week before and after birth, testosterone has an irreversible organizing effect on the body and brain of males. If the hormone is absent during this period, the individuals’ anatomy and behavior never can become wholly male. Also, that during puberty males gets a surge of testosterone, which activates their male sexual development and behavior. This gives some hints that testosterone levels affect sexual behavior. This source and be use to support both nature and nurture arguments.

This document give some basic information of what sexual orientation is. It also lists some cause that is believed to effect ones sexuality. It states homosexuality was believed to be the result of troubled experiences or environment, and it is not a form of mental illness .The information I receive for this document I can use to introduce my topic and give general information on sexual orientation and how ones environment is believe to effect it.

Johnson, Ryan. "Homosexuality: Nature or Nurture." AllPsych Online. N/A, 4/30/03. Web. 1 Nov 2011. <http://allpsych.com/journal/homosexuality.html>.

There are statics identical twins in this document. I can use this because identical twins have very similar biological structures. If the both of them are the same sexual orientation there is a chance that the biological build has a part to play in their sexual orientation. If the studies show that identical twins have the same sexual orientation this could prove my idea wrong

This article suggests that both the nature and the nurture have valid evidence on what can affect a child’s sexual orientation. It says proven Research suggests that the homosexual orientation is in place very early in the life cycle, possibly even before birth. Its also that suggest that nurture could be a cause homosexuality. Some causes are estranged relationships between gay children and their parents, allowing male children to play with dolls, not forming healthy same-sex bonds with peers as a toddler, and sexual abuse at a young age.

In this document there is information on childhood gender nonconformity. It is a child not being comfortable in his or her own body. In this one of a pair of twins is showing signs of childhood gender nonconformity. In this situation the mother is open minded and what’s her children to have freedom of expression and allow the behavior.

These articles talk about one environment and sexuality. It says that a family of homosexuals it is more likely for a child to come out homosexual. It also states that some events and/or relationship with parents can influence a child's sexuality. This directly contributes to my idea that one environment influence ones sexuality.

"sexual orientation and homosexuality." psychology.org. Australian psychological society, N/A. Web. 1 Nov 2011. <http://www.psychology.org.au/publications/tip_sheets/orientation/>.

This article rules out a popular belief that homosexuality is a choice. It states that ones sexual orientation is determined at a young age before there is any kind of sexual act. It shows how some were not comfortable with their homosexuality and tried to change it. In the end their homosexuality didn’t go away. I can use this to kill the argument that sexual orientation is choice when in the end leaves the arguments that it is either nurture or nature.

b.    Thesis

The environment that one grows up in has an affect on one’s    sexual orientation.

Tie in: Sexual orientation is how one identifies themselves sexually. Homosexuality also known as gay is a sexual orientation in which one has a sexual and/or romantic attraction/behavior to members of the same sex or gender. Heterosexuality also known as straight is a sexual orientation in which one has a romantic and/or sexual attraction/behavior to members of the opposite sex or gender. This ties into my topic by giving information of what my thesis is about.

d.    Coming out

Tie in: Puberty is the process in which a child's body begins to mature. In this process the body goes through physical changes which allows the body to go through sexual reproduction. After puberty from the acts of the child and others around them should be able to tell their sexual orientation. This ties into my topic by giving information on the identification of sexual orientation at a you age when it is usually determined.

Quarter 1 Creative Project

Reflection

♣A clear explanation of what your creative piece is about, what it represents, and how you attempted to get the point across.

My creative I chose to do a poem because it was a form of art that I felt most confortable doing and presenting. After reading the scarlet letter watching the Juno, it seem that the characters acted/felt one-way and said something different. The poems were basically the inner thoughts that were not said in the movie and/or text. I didn’t try to disguise it I just said it plain and simple.

♣How you went about crafting your piece. What was your process like? Did you encounter any problems/issues as you went along?

In class we talk a lot about what characters dialogue. We specifically examined what they said with their mouths vs. what they said with their body language. We noticed that what they said didn’t always match up with what they felt and/or thought. So with that, I kept each main character from Juno and the scarlet letter came up with a theme for their feelings/thought. Then I linked two from each that hand similar themes. For example, the theme I came up with for bleaker was about concealed emotions. Then I went about coming up with the poems because I already knew what I want to write. I just put it all in a powerpoint. The pictures chosen behind the text were silhouette because you can see them but not their entire identity just like in the character's thoughts.

♣What are the aspects of the project you believe you did well?

I believe I the part of the project I did well was the preparation and application. I believe it was because we were told about the project before hand and shown examples of other projects. I just knew what I wanted to talk because it was a topic that stayed in the classroom for a while. When were told we were doing a creative project, I thought poetry. My project just took off from there.

♣What aspects of the project do you feel you could have done better?

I feel as if the creativity level should have been way higher. Compared to other people’s ideas I don't feel like my Project was that creative.  On the other hand I also do not believe I could have shown much more creativity in my poems. I knew what I wanted and when I was finished I thought about what everyone else said they were doing and I felt as if my project wasn’t up to par.

♣If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently?

If I had another chance or more time, I would not have did something completely different but I would have added something to it. I would have tried to make a sculpture or did a drawling representing the theme of each poem and/or person.

News Article and Editorial

Posted by Rick Kinard in Isms - Baird on Wednesday, October 12, 2011 at 4:37 pm
Rick Kinard 10/11/11  Editorial-Creon takes over

New laws and rules were established as soon as Creon sat on the throne. One of his first rules was that Eteocles and his men were to be buried with full military honors. Those who die on the battle fight against him were to be left there, forbidding any anyone to bury them. If were anyone was caught trying to burying Polynieces or his allies, they would be stoned to death.

The Thebian have always treated the dead with regard and respect, no matter how bad they were to them. So Creon’s orders seemed to go against the belief of many of the Thebes, and it seems to go against basic human. Talk went around that the gods would also be unhappy with these actions.

The gods would be unhappy because it is a to refuse to bury the dead. Religion says that all life comes from the ground, and all of it must go back to the ground. When person dies, it is natural and proper for the soul move on one their body has been put to rest. If they are not put to rest their soul may be doomed to wander the earth.

The afterlife and rights of the dead are taken away by Creon’s orders. This is know among the Thebian people. They just sit is fear and do nothing to help the dead. They dear not do anything against Creon because he is the king how and hold all power over them.

It is impossible be completely against the king because in the past this paper has been loyal to him but on the other hand it is hard to stand by and just accept his actions and not say a word. Creon has taken it upon himself to go against those who’s power and authority surpass his own the reason the people have been so fortunate, the gods.

Todays New: A family divided

After the traitors of Thebes Polynieces and his allies were destroyed, Creon stepped into power. To bury and honor Etecoles, with full military rights and honors was half of his first command. The second was to leave his brother and his fallen comrades on the battlefield to rot. All the Thebian people were hesitant because of gods’ decree as to how the dead should be cared for but would surely support this decree. However, not all the people in Thebes accepted and carried out Creon’s order.

Soon after Creon mad his orders and will clear, the guards on watch at the gates of Thebes found the body of Polynieces with a thin layer of soil covering it. The culprit was at large. This enraged Creon so he threatening to charge the guard who made the discovery with treason. Eventually the truth came out, and with further under more investigating it was found that…

The sister of Polynices and Ismene, Antigone went one night with a child’s shovel and began to cover the body of Polynices with dirt and disobeyed King Creon.

Antigone tries to defend herself by explaining that it is her duty to bury him no matter what her relationship with him was. By burying him she will be allowing him into the underworld and therefore sending him home, to the dead. From the beginning Creon made it clear, anyone that who is caught trying to bury him will be sentenced to death. His plan was to make an example of whoever tried to bury Polynices, by killing them.

Thebian Tells Weekly was told by the sister of Antigone Ismene, that Antigone told said that she would disagreed with Creon’s commands and she would bury her brother regardless of what Creon says or does to her.

Life is Meaningless and Blue!
Is is possible to walk a mile in someone's shoe?
Under the sun can anything be new?
Can any love really be true?
Life is Loving and Free!
Can the joys of life flow through you and me?

My cousins dropped out of skool cuz its hard to study and their attention span was way too short.. Its flabbergasting as i see their attention span expanding…. As they study the every movement of women with the fat a** are walkingggg by ….. Not accomplishing anything and barley passing at life …. they say life is to hard and they pass thats why they take a puff puff and pass …. Inhaling the vapors and swallowing the gas thats kill their a**… This is believed to be true of all black society …. So sometimes i wish a spell would come and render me unconscious and peal back my skin so you can see inside me … Swim around in my thoughts and drown in my dreams… So look and see im different from what people depict of society … Now I say people are the down fall of this society … snorting powders , popping pills, and inhaling vapors that takes away our sanity… Madness made us believe slavery was abolished and is history. Like a man with a stutter history has a way of repeating itself. Every-time our fingers cramp on that trigger or take a puff of that weed we are enslaved but we are beating ourselves.

Posted by Rick Kinard in American History - Laufenberg on Friday, March 4, 2011 at 9:13 am
OUR PROJECT

Why did i choose this topic?
Originally i was going to do immigration in America the difference between unexcepted illegal immigration and people exempt illegal immigration. Then I figured why not go deeper and decided to talk about how becoming a citizen has changed along the years. Upon doing research i noticed the way it changed was no fair to the people of a nation we were at conflict with even if they were trying to flee.

Why did you choose this type of presentation format?
I want to do a video but

Brenda Chhin Election Day

Ms. Laufenberg had given an assignment where we had to go to the voting polls in our neighborhood and approach to strangers, first off, introducing our project and what was asked for from them, and to just get a good understanding of the process of voting and each individual. I would like to give thanks to the wonderful seniors in my community who took their time to let their voices be heard by others. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCNlyrsuruk
