Platinum: Print Edition

Posted by Siarra Cummings in Art - Freshman · Hull · d1 Band on Friday, June 9, 2017 at 2:41 pm
My element was Platinum, number 78. It was discovered by Antonio de Ulloa He was a spanish general of the navy, an explorer, scientist, author, astronomer and the first spanish governor of Louisiana. He discovered it in 1735 but it was being used by pre-Columbian Indians at that time. It is in Earth’s crust of about a millionth of 1 percent. The first thing I thought about when I got platinum was platinum records. Music is something I like and doing this was going to show my love for music and my element. My process for this was kind of hard because I am not good at making straight lines so making the border was the hardest part. Also making the print was hard because I messed up so much. Especially when we were putting the paint on the shiny paper. I would probably make my picture A WHOLE LOT BETTER. I think that I did a horrible job on it and it looks horrible. I would do the whole thing over again. I probably would've enjoyed the part where we were making the picture better if I made it better. I really like to draw and I didn't do a good job at making it.

Feeding Starving Children

Making A Change

I decided to name this blog making a change because in this post I am making a change in the world. Feeding starving children is a very serious thing and I’m glad people have started to take action on it including myself. In my last blog post  I stated how there were many organizations making a change and finding different ways to help children all over the world. One organization I am affiliated with and know the most about is what this project is basically based off on, Feed My Starving Children Organization. Some things I have done for my project is get my family and friends involved. Working with this organization has been a true blessing am I am glad to still be working with them in the future.

This is a picture of some of the volunteers making and putting the food into boxes. After we made 32 packs of food we would pack them into one of the boxes and “whoop” when we were done. It was actually really fun to see everyone be so enthusiastic about packing food for starving children and be willing to do something like this. I also really enjoyed talking to the people there while packaging the foods. Some people were volunteers just like me but have been working with them for years.  The people there were amazing though, no one complained everyone had smiles and was happy to help.

IMG_4098.JPG

When I was there I had to remember simple steps such as remembering to put the food in our: vitamins, vegetables, soy and then rice. It was something so simple but after doing it for a few hours it kind of got mixed up sometimes. The people there were so nice though so I wasn’t shy or bored, it was actually really fun to talk the people. Most of these people are from my church and some of them are volunteers who help every year. Everyone had great attitudes that day it was such a fun experience.

IMG_4107.JPG

Each of these boxes were 700lbs and it took a crew to help load it onto the truck. The whole togetherness and vibe of the place really made me want to do it again.  I really believe these people are a true blessing and they are doing something really great for these children who sometimes believe they don’t have someone there for them. I also would like the chance to visit these countries with them in the future and see all the children they have saved. I think it would be so cool to be apart of something like that it’s something I do see myself doing in the future.

Doing this project has definitely made my top 10 best projects. It was really great to share my thoughts and actions  with other people on how I can change the world. Initially I wanted to meet with one of the representatives of the organization but it didn’t work out that way till my agent of change. Unfortunately it didn’t happen but I was glad to be apart of something so small that it’s gonna be big in the future. I’m really glad that I got to share my project with everyone. I also want to thank Ms. Giknis for letting us do this project and helping me throughout the project!

The Fault in our Stars- Final Project

Why we created Augustus on the Brain. Well since Love on theBrian is a popular song we decided to make a song to it but change all the lyrics. I really wanted to show off the vocals and make a song and this was the perfect opportunity to do it. We really loved the book and making this only proved it further.

We wanted to make the video enjoyable but also very sad and also very very cliche. I think we have a really creative project and I can't believe it turned out so well! I really enjoyed making this project. Even though I am not in the video I play a big part so it's fine.

Feeding Starving Children- Road to Recovery

Blog Post #2

Siarra Cummings

Feeding Starving Children

In my first blog post I told you guys that I decided to do my project on feeding starving children. My first post was basically about my views on the issue and my passionate reasons on making this more aware. I talked about different organizations I would like to get involved with like feed my starving children organization. Also a little background story on why I chose to do my You and the World project about this topic.

I decided to go deeper in my research of starving children and I looked at the whole world and what they were doing about it. One of the website I came across is Do Something. Do something is an organization that lists facts about world hunger and gets the word out.  They do different campaigns across the world and take action on feeding starving children. 98% is the percentage of world hunger that is in underdeveloped countries. Most countries in Asia and Africa has the highest count of people suffering from hunger. 1 in 15 children die from being malnourished in underdeveloped countries as well. Sometimes it’s not about whether or not a parent can feed a child, it’s about where they live and if they have enough resources to get food. Some parents don’t have the right resources to get out of the places they live and affects their family and them as well. The organization’s main focus is on everyone not just children and I think that’s important too.

This is a map from Unicef about children in different countries dieing from hunger related issues. Most of the children dieing reside in Africa and Asia as I stated in the last paragraph. Every 10 seconds a child dies from hunger related issues and it’s sad.  We lose about 3 million children every year from cases like this. That’s why I wanted to research this problem and see what people were doing about it. The problem is decreasing since organizations like FMSC and the Hunger Project have gotten involved.

In my research I have learned a lot of things about my topic. People are aware of starving children and they are doing something about it. I decided to research more on what people are doing about it and what countries are doing well with helping others. Most of you already know about the Feed My Starving Children (FMSC) organization that was stated in my last blog post. They are one of the biggest organizations worried about this problem in the world but we need more. I decided to look up organizations that were helping kids with hunger and a website that popped up was Save The Children.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to complete my interview for my project but I did get most of my questions answered from the Feed My Starving Children organization. I already knew that they were a Christian organization but I wanted to know why. When I talked to one of the ladies that worked at the organization she said the it’s God who call them out to give food to the malnourished children. Like when I went to one of their packing sites every time they ship food out to children they don’t know sometimes if it’s actually gonna get there (thankfully 99% of the meals get where they need to go). So they pray over the food and I think it was a wonderful thing to experience and watch. One of their main saying is food is the foundation, it all starts with the food. As of now they have 3 nutritional based foods. Each pack of food serves a different purpose. They have Manna Pack Rice which is their first product and what they make the most of. They get volunteers to actually make these Manna Pack foods so we can all help and have that purpose.

Final Stamp Design - Siarra C

Posted by Siarra Cummings in Art - Freshman · Hull · d1 Band on Friday, May 12, 2017 at 8:40 pm
IMG_4232.JPG
I chose this scale because it is the symbol of my birth month. My birthday is October 13 so I am a Libra. This scale is a symbol of intuitiveness and knowing when things are equal. These two things I value the most when it comes to my character and personality. I also made it pink because it's my favorite color which is apart of me. At first I wanted to create a flower but then I realized I only really like to draw flowers they don't really represent me. So I went with something a little more cliche and something that connects with me well. I wanted to do something that represents me more than anything else and I think my zodiac sign and the meaning behind it fits what I was looking for.
The process behind doing my design was hard. I tried to make it look as symmetrical as possible but it wasn't working out. Using that knife was a little challenging at points since I don't have steady hands using stuff like that. My negative space is all the space I don't use. Like in my picture I decided to use black since that's what I consider negative space to be, just there. Negative space is the space that isn't needed and the positive space is the drawing itself, it's everything that needs to make the picture.
I think I truly understand the meaning of negative and positive space. Some pictures like intricate ones it could be hard to point out the different spaces but if you start to get the context it's not that hard. In the future though I would like to start doing some of these negative and positive space drawings they are actually pretty cool to look at.

Negative space is the space surrounding the main picture. Like if you were to draw something the space outside of the picture is the negative space. I found the negative space in my cut out by outlining the part of the picture that I needed most. All the space I didn't need to make the picture I identified as my negative space. It helps an artist to identify the negative space so they can know what part of the picture they don't need. I think identifying negative space does enhance drawings it makes you see the parts you don't use or focus on most of the time. I think it also makes the picture look cook especially when they are right next to each other.IMG_4130.JPG

“Children are starving in other Countries of the World!”

Hello my name is Siarra Cummings the topic I have decided to focus on for this project is feeding starving children. Feeding starving children is a serious thing in the world and is still continuing on till this day. Only groups of people work to make sure starvation  isn’t big in the future. More groups have to made because of the thousands of children all over are malnourished and not fed properly together we can end this hunger. This topic interests me because I can’t imagine not having access to food everyday. We waste food almost everyday and take it for granted when some kids don’t even have food.  I  want to create awareness so we can appreciate what we have. Which is why I made my title the way it is because we hear this from our parents almost all of the time, right?

In part of my research I looked up “feeding starving children.” I looked to see if this was a big topic. Were people  really interested in it? The first website that appeared was a feeding children organization, who packaged meals for kids in need of food. This organization is Christian based and they go around recruiting churches to help them out. The organization is  called Feed My Starving Children . I found a connection with the Feeding Starving Children organization, and decided I want to help. A few weeks ago this organization came to my church and presented  the idea of feeding starving children and helping them physically grow. I was so intrigued because I never knew how serious this topic was. The lady presenting gave empowering stories about different children they fed back to a healthy body. There are numerous amount of success stories (link to photos as well) that really just amazes me at what this organization does.

From Miserable Pain to Radiant Joy

In this photo this one of the little boys they nursed this boy back to health, his success story is actually on the website too. He is sitting next to the a box filled with the food that feed my starving children send to his village.

rice and mike

.

This is the pack of food they send to these children and it is scientifically tested to nurse them back to a healthy body. This food contains rice, soy, vitamins and vegetables. It may not seem like a lot but since these children are so malnourished they can’t stomach regular food (especially large amounts) and it will make them sick. So they needed something that could be manageable for them to eat.

For my second part of research I really wanted to find out different facts about malnourished children in the world. To reach this information I had to go onto a world hunger organization website to find out the facts. What I read was real heart breaking information and I realize again we Americans take food for granted. Not only does this site talk about world hunger for kids but it talks about how much food we waste a year. I think the numbers are absurd! About 3.1 million children die a year from being malnourished and not receiving the right amount of food. What we don’t know is how it’s affecting where we live right now. Most of us have the easiest access to food and it’s not hard to get what we want.

I wanted to see how much Philadelphians had children who were starving and see how much damage we are doing to ourselves. 30% of children in Philadelphia are starving. We don’t contribute as much to the starving children counts they take every year but since we are one of the poorest cities in the United States we have almost the highest count of starving children. I think starting small and working our way up to help this situation is a good thing! If we start small in Philadelphia and make sure this problem diminishes we could help others.  I feel really passionate about this topic and I hope that it really opens up other people’s eyes in this growing problem.

My goal moving forward is to become a regular volunteer with feed my starving children I think I would enjoy working with this organization!

Siarra Cummings Print Making

Posted by Siarra Cummings in Art - Freshman · Hull · d1 Band on Friday, April 21, 2017 at 7:57 am
Printmaking is the process which an artist takes a stencil or something with a design on them and use a roller (with ink on it) and roll it over it to create an image. It is important because it makes a picture faster and nice in a short amount of time. Printmakers were inspired by stained glass windows to create these images. The invention of printmaking is so important because it makes pictures that are nice. It was revolutionary because artists found a new way to create something.

I really like this print because I like designs like this. Especially when they are on elephants it looks so pretty. I also like to draw stuff like this. I notice that the pattern is in the elephant instead of outside of it. I wonder if they did this because they couldn't properly see the elephant if it was outside of it.

Tech Presentation 2.0 Siarra Cummings

Posted by Siarra Cummings on Friday, December 23, 2016 at 1:21 pm
Untitled presentation

I realized that my presentation had to much going on. Comparing my old presentation to my new one this one gives off a better view. When I did my research I learned about glance media. Mine had a little bit too much going on for you to just glance at it and get it. No this one you can obviously get the point that I am athletic and I like sports.I think it still catches the eye as well because its glittery and it moves and it’s interesting. I think my colors work really well because they contrast. Like one of my corrections was to make my name stand out and I tried to match it with the other white borders of my pictures. Researching ways to make your presentation better is good because it teaches us how to make it and what appeals to the eye. I would’ve never heard or even thought about glance media but I understand it now.

Media Fluency

Media Fluency- Tech Siarra C
I decided to make my board pop. I describe my personality to be wild and composed at the same time. My board has a bit of craziness, but it gets my point across, which is me. The things I decided to put on my board is everything I describe myself to be or to do in my free time. I really like the effect or gif I added , because it makes my board more noticeable. When I did my research I learned that certain things like color make people notice it more. I choose to add color but also an effect to make it stand out to people. This also relates to “glance media”, which is it must be understood by just taking a simple glance at. I wanted to get the points of the billboard across without a lot of words. It mostly contains pictures that have a word that may describe the harder to see things. My board has more of a visual theme going on. If I put everything I do in words it would take to long so they pictures give enough information to leave a person thinking about it.
