Savannah Manns: Capstone

My capstone was the black girls can conference. I designed this conference to be a place where young African American women come to see positive role models, learn about opportunities in Philadelphia for you and talk about things like microaggressions, the professional world, self-care, healthy relationships and much more. I got this idea because when I was younger I went to a conference where I saw women much older than me at the time doing amazing things and that changed my life. I decided that I wanted to empower and uplift young women because of representation matters. On April 7th I made this long time dream come true at SLA. I was able to make this possible with the support of the amazing staff at SLA and the amazing staff at SLA. I think it was really helpful to the very few young ladies that were in attendance. We had great conversation, amazing food and as a whole, we grew in ourselves as well as with the ladies around us. There were a lot of things that I wish I could have changed, one of them being the attendance. Although that was one of the things that are not 100 percent up to me however I wish I could have done more to promote or promote people to come out for a great cause. Even some things didn't work out the way I wanted. I hope that I inspired the young ladies who were there to be themselves and know that they can do absolutely anything they put their minds to.

This source is about a STEM conference for young women. This is a important source for me because My capstone does not have a specific topic, this source helped me to look more at how the girls were interacting with each other and what their sessions looked like. This source also helped me see what   the graded level was and how the interaction goes. I know for the conference that I am hosting  I do not want it to be a cliquey interaction via each grade level.

https://edtechmagazine.com/k12/article/2017/09/3-ways-get-more-young-women-interested-stem

This source is about 3 different ways that you can get young women interested in STEM. One of the biggest things that stood out to me was “changing the conversation”.  This is important because when approaching the girls at the conference, we do not want to come off as if we are forcing them to do it. It also said a lot about placing emphasis on tech role models and women in technology. This helps me to find  out if I want a keynote or not and is so who I want it to be. \

https://medium.com/tedx-experience/how-to-organize-a-conference-567fb50ccdbd

This is an important source because it gives amazing tips on how to start a conference. This is a really great source because it is from Tedx which is a really great  show and they've been doing this for years. Tips from tedx will definitely help me with everything as far as planning goes.

http://www.uniquelyyousummit.org/

This source is from a Summit that I’ve been going to since i was 11. This is important because I want to model my summit off of this one, and implement some of their values in to my own summit/ conference. There are lots of different  ways that I could go about this, and this summitt is one of those ways. I think that this source will help to create bios, list sessions and plan things overall.

file:///home/chronos/u-02164d821c358ef94fee4ec27053bf0489aded5b/Downloads/Conference_guide.pdf

This source is a PDF book all about creating a successful  conference. It gives tips on creating a budget, establishing a committee, registration, speakers etc. This is important because before I go into the braskem pitch I will need a budget and a way that I can explain  my Idea clearly and thoroughly. I will use this  source the most out off all of them because of how informative it is.
https://www.gigmasters.com/search/motivational-speaker-philadelphia-pa

This source is a place where i can find young speakers. This is helpful because I can request free quotes, and learn more about them from their bios. This is important because I am looking for a keynote or multiple speakers at this event, specifically empowering speakers. This source will help me find these people.

https://www.paconferenceforwomen.org/speakers/

This source is from the PA women's conference which I attended in October. That conference in itself  is a source. This is a list of all of the speakers. Although most of the speakers I may have to pay for them, the wesboste and the process is what I would like to model my conference off of.  This source is helpful because I get to see the program descriptions etc.

https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/02/concentration-poverty-american-schools/471414/

This source is an article about the focus on poverty in American schools. This source talks a lot about the poverty rate of students in schools and what the schools are like in impoverished neighborhoods. Over all this helps me to understand the environment that some students go to school in and live in.  This is important when I create break out sessions.

https://www.greatschools.org/pennsylvania/philadelphia/schools/?gradeLevels=h

This source is a list of high schools in Philadelphia , this will help me when picking out students from each school and call in counselors etc.

https://helloendless.com/how-to-create-your-event-budget/
 This source is about making a budget for an event, how to do it and the do's and don'ts of doing it. This will help prepare for pitch night with braskem.

Clueless

Posted by Savannah Manns in Gender Studies on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at 1:22 pm

The movie clueless gives you a first hand look into the stereotype of the privileged young woman in the upscale neighborhood of beverly hills. “ You’re probably think is this like a Noxzema commercial or what?” are the opening words of of Clueless, Cher (ALicia silverstone) begins to tell the viewers more about her life. As the movies continues we meet her best friend Dionne(Stacey Dash), “ she’s my

best friend because we both know what it feels like to have people be jealous of us.”

images (1).jpg

Continuing on we find out more about Cher and her upscale life as we find out more about her school and her family. Her father is a litigator, which carries with her throughout her school as she argues her from C’s to A’s on her report card. Through the rest of the movie we see many different sides of Cher as she goes through the ups and downs.

This movie meets the criteria Bechdel test however, does not meet the Mako Mori test.  This movie meets the Bechdel test by having more than two women in it who talk to each other about something other than men. Clueless does not unfortunately meet the Mako Mori test because Cher, the main character falls in love with her love interest as she boost’s his character up.

If I were to make my own test it would be about diversity, The test on diversity would have the criteria of; at least 2 women of color, 2 men of color, actors of color must show a sign of education or being educated. I believe this test is needed because in many movies we don't see a lot of actors of color who are educated with lives that do not have some type of struggle story. In conclusion all movie test are  needed in order for producers to brush up on casting etc.

The road to inner happiness

Posted by Savannah Manns in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Monday, January 9, 2017 at 1:53 am

It is December 30th, 2015. I’d never thought I’d end up where I am now. I began sophomore year optimistic, looking forward to beginning a new chapter after a successful summer. I was struggling at the time with finding out who I wanted to be and what I looked like. Slowly realizing how  “big” or “fat” I was,  insecurities came quickly. I’d taken interest in guys but they’d never taken much interest in me. My two bestfriends at the time, skinny and pretty with long hair, walking down the street with them was often painful for me. As boys would approach them throughout the day, asking for their numbers or trying to get their attention, I was left in the dust. Although boys my age hadn’t paid any attention to me, there was this one boy who caught my eye. Well dressed, goals for himself, heavily involved in extracurriculars, he’d seemed to meet my standards. We’d been friends for a little bit until I kind of developed a crush.

It was the last day of school before winter break, we all sat in class, huddled around, play fighting and laughing. I was giggling when suddenly he’d taken my phone. I had no problem when he’d asked for my password;

“ I am an open book, I have nothing to hide” I’d thought to myself.

“ What is it ?” he’d said for the second time

“ 8269, it’s my mom's birthday” I said proudly.

A few minutes had passed when I noticed he wasn’t engaged in the conversation.

“ What are you doing over there?” I asked making my way to his seat.

He dodged, I caught a glimpse of the screen, he’d been reading text messages from my best friend at the time and I. Throughout those messages were secrets that could have exposed her and I both. We wrestled for the phone until the period was over. As I packed up my things he walked passed placing my phone on the table;

“I know something, you wanna know what I know?” he said.

I looked at him in suspicion, my stomach suddenly in knots and my heart beating fast I said

“Yeah, what do you know?”

“ What do you think I know?” he asked.

I became annoyed and nervous at the same time. I swore he knew that I liked him, walking down the hallway I was at a loss for words as he asked me every five seconds ;

“ tell me, what do you think I know?.... Huh” he said

We’d gotten to our next class, I sat down, he sat next to me. His seat being all the way across the room I told him to leave and I’d text it to him. I pulled out my phone, opened kik messanger where I wrote;

“ I kind of have a crush on you.”  and pressed send.

Later that day I rushed out the classroom and out of the school avoiding any contact. Little did I know I wouldn’t get rejected and I would have entered a relationship that would have lasted almost a year, with on and offs.

I’d always been the girl to say “ I’d never let a boy effect my school work.” I’d prided myself on being a “good girl.” I’ve always had good grades, good friends, and a good life until I got my first “serious” boyfriend. I hadn’t completely thought about what I was getting myself into. I hadn’t even begun to pour love and all of my emotions into myself however, I decided to pour myself into someone else. I felt so mature, there were heart eyes and red heart emojis galore, we’d  talk about the future and our goals and aspiration however, things began to seem one sided. After the honeymoon stage we hit a rocky patch, the mature feeling was only a feeling and I learned for the first time that I didn’t know how to communicate. Being a public speaker, I’d thought of myself as an  eloquent  and confident speaker who spoke circles around those who would listen. This was until we had our first argument,  and suddenly I was mute.   I’d have nothing to say in front of him but in front of my friends I couldn’t stop talking and that was the problem.  He was  intimidating, he made me nervous and a little bit more insecure than I already was. I’d think that If I spoke my mind,  that instead of listening he’d run the other way,so I kept my mouth shut. He had a certain power over me that not even I had over myself.

On a day in mid-January we broke up for the first time. I went home and for the first time, I cried over a boy, About a week later, he texted me, telling me how much he missed me and how sorry he was that he wasn’t making time for me and that he’d try harder. I began comparing myself to girls I thought he wanted and overtime tearing myself apart. As I began to dig deeper into the puppy love that we had I began to stray farther from who I was and what I wanted, I was settling.  By settling I agreed to be treated without respect, to be the one in the relationship putting in enough emotion for both of us when the other was incapable of putting in emotion. Suddenly I found myself skipping class, lying to my dad, not doing homework or benchmarks because I was in my room crying or sleeping. My life as a student and as a young woman was taking a turn for the worst.

Growing up without a mom, I was not 100% sure how I should have been treated by a boy, overall I was not really taught what it meant to respect myself and know what it meant to know your worth. After sticking with this him through all of our ups and downs, being cheated on and left in the dust more than once I found happiness in myself. After realizing that I deserved better, that being treated without anything close to the amount of love or emotion you put into someone can be tiring. That not only did I deserve better but that I could have better. Over the course of the almost year long relationship I had lost weight and a begun to look at myself differently. I began to carry myself  like a young lady, with style and little bit of grace. I began to take a bit more pride in my appearance, I slowly began the road to inner happiness and realizing myself worth.I learned that how kind I am as a person can definitely be taken as a weakness. I spent a year not knowing who I was but trying to find myself in someone else.

The costly physique

Posted by Savannah Manns in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 12:29 am

Beauty is something  humans hold to a high standard when idolizing things, people and significant others. Humans have always had a high standard for beauty, whether it's in physical objects or their significant others. With the constant influence of social media and celebrities, the standard of beauty in America is forever changing, and many American citizens complain that every new trend is hard to keep up with. Women all around the world  are often finding new trends to attract men and to show financial status however, many women will go to many lengths to get the body they desire.

The idea that we must have what everyone else has and yet somehow be better than them is the mentality of most women. Many women see the bodies of Kim K, Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez and often desire that body. Many women will often go under the knife for this alluring physique. Dr. Michael Salzhauer, also known as “Doctor Miami” is a plastic surgeon that puts all of his surgeries on a social media app called snapchat.  Doctor Miami often makes it look cool to get a brazilian butt lift or a breast augmentation, he even makes hashtags out of them, “It really demystifies the whole process. Yes, they are gory, but nobody has to watch it.”Although looking at all of the nitty gritty stuff behind the scenes may sound horrible, it actually gives customers a chance to see what will happen if they so choose to undergo these life changing processes.

Although any women may want to look like an instagram model or a celebrity, they may not want to go under the knife and risk it all. Many women resort to extreme dieting and exercises, many celebrities such as; Khloe Kardashian, Kylie Jenner, Jennifer Lopez and even Beyonce workout at least 3 times a week. Many celebrities often go on diets that include juicing, no carbs, no dairy, or even all veggies, “ ‘By lunchtime, I’m starving,’ J-Lo says. She mixes it up but a typical day is salmon and a veggie-packed salad. She loves broccoli, peppers and zucchini with a drizzle of vinaigrette on top.” although many of these diets that celebrities used, recommended by their trainers may work, they don't alway guarantee the the body unless you have the money to match. Personal trainers can often cost as much as $60- $70 dollars per session, and the celebrity trainers, upwards to $1,000 dollars a month. This a lot to spend on being happy, however many people feel as if the ay the look is a reflection of who they are on the inside. Although not all women aspire to have the Kim K or Jennifer Lopez body type women subconsciously look up to it as a goal they may never reach. Via the influence of social media, a women's ideal body type can become inspiration or can cause a self esteem deterioration.

Declaration of Sentiments and Resolutions: Savannah Manns

Posted by Savannah Manns in Gender Studies on Thursday, October 6, 2016 at 9:40 pm

Overall the Sentiment of Resolutions is an amazing document that did made many big moves for the rights of women. This document is a big part of our history due to the fact that women had almost no rights not too long ago. Although we’ve evolved there are still some people who live an old fashioned life style. Some of the declaration throughout the first few paragraphs were very harsh. It’s almost amazing how far we have come from where we started. “He has endeavored … to destroy her confidence in her own powers, to lessen her self-respect, and to make her willing to lead a dependent and abject life.” Although this was written many years ago this seems to be a tactic some men use to control women often in today’s society. The resolutions made by the women who built the stepping stones for me and many other women, gave many women a chance at a better life. The resolution saying that men and women are equal. We as women have been fighting for this for years and still are. The fact that we’ve been fighting for it for so long gives us background on what we need to do to change how we raise awareness now. The Declaration Sentiment of Resolutions is one of the biggest steps women took towards equality and has has a large impact on the way I now think about feminism and how we as women are impacted today.

If Athalia’s life were a book title it would be “A Roller Coaster”. She says she’d name her life this because she feels that everybody has their own personal struggles and up’s and Down’s. Although Athalia does not read often, her favorite childhood book that she still loves is Captain Underpants. She says this is still her favorite book because it is funny and helped her get over her own personal up’s and down’s.

When reading humor captures her attention, if a book does not have humor and continues to go on and on she may lose interest. Biographies are her least favorite book genre, theses are her least favorite because she feels they go on and on and the are often boring. Although Athalia doesn’t read much she wants to become someone who read every once and awhile.

My ILP Semester 2

Posted by Savannah Manns in Advisory Sophomore - Ames - adv on Monday, March 28, 2016 at 3:27 pm
For my ILP i mentor a 3rd grade girl  at Powell elementary school. I enjoy being a mentor because you can see the change in the person you mentor. Over the 6 month period I have been mentoring  this young lady I have seen a very large change in her behavior and how she interacts with me and her peers.

Reconstruction Era Visuals Project ( Savannah Manns

Posted by Savannah Manns in African American History - Jonas - E on Friday, May 1, 2015 at 12:16 am
Somethings that may not be clear are some of the captions, many of them may not be super specific when it comes to certain parts of reconstruction. They are very important for reconstruction and will help the  articles flow nicely. I feel as if that is the only thing that is actually  something that people will not understand. However I feel as my project is very clear ,I feel like my titles and pictures matter the most because that is what everyone will see first instead of the actual content of the article it self. When I chose to write about being free from the perspective of someone in that time. I feel like African Americans being free is a very large part of the reconstruction era and even in today's society . African American people on the reconstruction era were  very happy to be free after 500 years of being in enslaved, However they were entitled to being free but only in the eyes of some. That is why the question ¨ Were they Free ¨ is a large question in the era of reconstruction and maybe even the answer of why reconstruction failed.

a. What do you feel like you accomplished with your final drawing?

I feel as if I accomplished establishing my vanishing point, and establishing my Ceiling, roof, side walls, and floor.

b. What would you change or differently if you could do this project again?

I would get a longer ruler and make everything equivalent and correct. I would also spend more time on smaller details to make the the bigger picture way better.

c. Find a drawing on the wall that you think is successful. Describe it. Why is it successful?

I think that Liv Coppers drawing was really successful because everything was spot on. She had cabinets and everything was very accurate. She did an amazing job . She captured the whole wall, she had many cabinets and amazing desk and chairs.

d. What did you learn about one point perspective?

I learned that it is not only complicated but it makes things very three dimensional.

Net neutrality Blog

Posted by Savannah Manns on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 10:35 am

The internet It's something that everyone uses, from women to children to newborn babies everyone uses it. The internet could be very dangerous to us humans. This could be dangerous because we can be glued for hours at a time which is bad . That's why there is net neutrality.

Net neutrality helps everyone stay on task, limiting the amount of data we get each month. I feel like all teens should know about net neutrality. Teens should know because its very important and  every should know about it. President Obama is all for neutrality.

I think neutrality is a good way to help everyone move on with their lives and get outside or  play with their kids this is an amazing rule and I am all for it .
