Analysis

This dish is very healthy. I love it because I love starches, especially potatoes. This gives me an alternative to mashed potatoes, they taste the same but they have much less carbohydrates and is a lighter side. Sometimes when you have mashed potatoes accompanying other foods they can be heavy and overpowering, the mashed cauliflower is nothing like that at all. The Cauliflower I bought was from Produce Junction and I believe that it came from a local farm. I do not know the exact name of the farm but, I know it is from a farm near Philadelphia. The garlic cloves were bought from Produce Junction also but it was not clear where they were from. The workers did not know when I asked so I could not really get a conclusive answer about the origins of the garlic. The Olivio has two ingredients in it that are actually processed, most of its components are natural. The rest of the ingredients were seasonings. This recipe is easy to make and has only a few ingredients within it. The bet part about it though is that you can season it however you like. You can season them just like you season potatoes and they taste just like them. You can even not add anything, if you are trying to watch your salt intake, and just rely on the garlic and sea salt that it was boiled with. There have multiple times when I have eaten it like that and it is actually quite good and not at all bland. The fat content of my meal would be quite low. Overall it is a great recipe and it is good for you.

Politically the food I prepared was wonderful. It was not expensive at all to make and it took no time to put together. The heads of cauliflower cost about $2 each and the whole garlic cloves cost about $2.60 each. In total I only spent about $7.20. This cost so little to make and feeds so many people that I feel like I am saving so much money. The people that made money off of my meal are Produce Junction and the farm that my food comes from. All of the other ingredients I have or are seasoning so the nutritional fact is clear.

Socially, a lot of things I feel as though my dish is also lovely. This dishes' only social ramification would be the travel. How the ingredients got from one destination to another. That could be a problem depending on how far the vegetables traveled. In my case they did not travel from too far away from Philadelphia.

Personal Reflection

I have learned a lot in this unit. The most important thing I have learned though, is that I need to begin to pay attention to the kinds of foods that enter my body. Whenever I go grocery shopping I notice all of those "heart healthy" and "organic" etc. labels and I think nothing of them. I never read the ingredients to see how beneficial the food could be be for me. I never even stop to think about it, in a way I am being ignorant. I realized during this unit that my ignorance needs to stop and I need to start treating my body better by eating better.

When we did the focus on diseases and disorders that were repercussions from being obese I was appalled. A lot of things were brought into perspective and I realized that obesity was serious. The biggest problem I see within our food system is how much of the bad things that we eat. I think as Americans we eat a lot, but we don't eat a lot of salads or vegetables we eat a lot of fatty meats and sugars. This is a problem. We are now the number one on the list of most  obese countries. If we did not eat so much of everything then I believe that we would definitely be healthier. I believe the reason that we do eat so much is because we develop an emotional relationship with food. We no longer eat to live, we live to eat. We associate food with emotions and feelings and we trust in this food. This kind of emotional connection with something that can hurt us should not exist. This section of the unit really taught me a lot and made me realize what my problem is with food and being healthy and America's problem as well.

As for myself and what choices I will make from here on out to ensure my healthiness is I will just be more cautious about what I put into my body. I will begin to look at ingredients and how food was made and if it is processed. Becoming a healthy person begins with intake, if I am eating crap then I will look like crap because I am what I eat.

I think the other impactful section of this unit was on friday when we looked at the one section of a documentary. The section was about chickens, cows, and corn. It had a lot of information in the beginning about chicken farmers and how they are forced to do things that are not good for the chickens because they are so in debt. We also learned about how cows are fed corn when their bodies have evolved to process grass not corn. We learned about how cows are contracting different deadly viruses and then are wading in each other's feces and are spreading these viruses. The the feces is not completely sprayed off the cattle so when they are slaughtered some of the feces gets onto the meat along with the viruses causing the consumers to possibly contract a deadly virus. We then learned about how corn is in just about everything that we eat and use on a daily basis, even gasoline ! A lot of the things that happen within our society are harmful to either our wallets, our bodies, or both. I learned in this unit that if everyone decided to make a difference in what they put into their bodies it could have a large impact on the entire country. Individuals can make a difference and this unit helped me to see this.

TAYLOR VEASLEY CAPSTONE

Posted by Taylor Veasley in Capstone - Miles - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 10:49 pm
Name: Taylor Veasley
Abstract Paragraph: My Capstone was to host a scholarship for my Dad's music program called the Bass BootCamp. This past year was the Camp's 10th year anniversary and I have attended every single year. We had been talking about hosting a scholarship for the camp for multiple years now and I decided that I would make that my Capstone. The reason that having this scholarship is so important to my father and his staff is because there is a low amount of people ages 16 to about 25 that attend the camp. We feel as though it is very important to have people of ALL ages attending the camp. When we asked people in that age range why they felt as though people their age weren't attending the camp they said it was for financial reasons most likely. It is the age where you begin to become independent and most people that age do not have the means to provide the tuition, travel costs, and board expenses themselves. This scholarship will open up that door for that age range and really begin to expand the thinking of the camp. There are so many talented young people and I think that it is awesome that I get to help the community in this way.

For this Capstone a lot of work had to go into it. A lot of research and coordination to make sure everything went smoothly. We had our first ever round of scholarship winners in March of 2014 and it was amazing. They were both wonderful, intelligent and talented young men and they were so grateful  for the opportunity. the lead up to it was stressful because of planning and making sure that everyone arrived at the hotel safely, and had somewhere to stay. It was also fun though, because I really felt like I was making a difference in someone's life. Now, based on what happened this year I can improve the experience for everyone for next year.

I expected for this to be something that was done easily, smoothly, without any kinks but, that is not what happened. It has been a very bumpy journey but, it turned out great. I am going to host this scholarship every year now and as we receive more donations from musicians and just people that care we can begin to provide more scholarships. It is lovely to see young people applying to my scholarship and being excited about their future in music. For my final project I was expecting to make a photo essay but, I decided instead to create a website that is easy to navigate and is informative for the students. This is the link to my website, I hope everyone enjoys it. http://bbcscholarship.weebly.com

Annotated Bibliography: https://scholarships.gmsp.org/Program/Details/0fb486dd-d32c-4a4f-a0c5-d911d7d89cb7

Gates Millenium is one of the first scholarships I thought of when I began creating this scholarship. It made sense because GMS in my opinion hosts the scholarship very well. There are 100,000s of kids that apply to this scholarship annually and it made sense to me to use them as an example for my own scholarship. This source was helpful for me because I got to look at the eligibility and the requirements of the scholarship. Although, our scholarships are not exactly the same kind it still makes sense to model one after the other. This website lists first what GMS is, why they started it and who they started it for. Then they go on to tell the history of the GMS scholarship. After this part of the website they tell the history of the scholarship and how far they have come as a foundation. Then they go into the specifics of eligibility and the requirements. I like this layout of the website so I thought this would be a great source to use for my capstone.

http://www.cksf.org/index.cfm?Page=Start_Your_Own

This website that helps people start scholarships from scratch. Although I am not starting my scholarship from scratch I believe that this website can help me with a lot of the logistics and basics of my scholarship. The website starts off listing what the basic questions you should ask yourself when you begin to plan the scholarship and then goes into detail about what you should ask the applicants. This also gives a lot of great tips about what to do and what not to do when hosting a scholarship. They use real-life scholarships and scholarship hosts as examples for reference for our own scholarships. This website really has an awesome break-down of beginning your own scholarship and really what to expect. I believe that this scholarship will serve as a great aid throughout my capstone process.

http://www.ronbrown.org/apply/eligibilityrequirements.aspx

This is the Ron Brown scholarship, another scholarship that came to mind when I began my capstone. This will serve as another guide for me to base my own scholarship on. When I applied to the Ron Brown scholarship the process was smooth and it went off without a hitch, this is how I want my process to go so I saw it as a great idea to use them as an example for myself. On this website they are listing the eligibility requirements, application deadlines, and the scholarship conditions. What I really like about this website in particular is how accessible everything is. You have all the important things about the scholarship that you need on one page, there is no searching necessary. The more accessible it is the more people want to apply. They also give you a timeline of the scholarship and what you should have done by certain dates to be on the right track to have everything in on time.

https://scholarships.uncf.org/

This website is a website that has scholarships that are great to apply to listed on it. It is a scholarships, programs, internships and fellowships website hosted by the UNCF. Students use this to find similar scholarships that they are most likely eligible for. The scholarships are all mildly similar so, it is helpful for people that apply to one to apply to more that are listed with them. For my capstone’s purposes I will use this website to find example scholarships for myself. The UNCF is a very creditable foundation so I am confident in their choices of scholarships. I also have applied to a handful of the scholarships and internships on the website and I have never had a problem with any of them. I like this website and I believe that it will serve as a great source for me during the capstone process.

http://www.bassbootcamp.com/

My scholarship is the Bass BootCamp scholarship so, naturally I would list the bassbootcamp website as one of my sources. I have worked at the bass boot camp for nearly ten years but I do not know all of the logistics of the camp off of the top of my head. I use this website as an information hub. This website lists everything that is needed to know about the camp, prices, what to bring, what is offered, everything is on hear. This gives the run-down of the camp and what the overall experience will be like. This website also offers pictures to look at and to imagine yourself in. I will be using this part of the website very often and it serves as a great reference site for my and any applicants for my scholarship.

http://www.bassbootcamp.com/scheduleandforms.htm

This website lists the schedule for the attendees of the Bass BootCamp as well as the instructors that attended the camp the year prior, 2013. The reason this site is wonderful for me is because this is basically what I will use to get people to apply to my scholarship. The largest part is people actually applying. When they read the schedules of shows and amazing classes taught by world renowned professors they will definitely want to apply. This website serves as one of the most important sources for me because my scholarship is based on people applying. I will visit this website very often during this Capstone process so I truly do believe this is a very reliable, important, and helpful source for my Capstone.

http://www.bassbootcamp.com/faq.htm

This website is a site just filled with Frequently Asked Questions of the BassBootCamp. I know that there must be a million questions that people will have about not only the scholarship but the camp itself as well. Although my mentor knows everything about the camp and what happens there he is not always easily accessible. It helps to have a website at my disposal that I can always rely on to visit and get the answers to those questions from. Again, they are frequently asked questions so not every single question that I am asked will be featured on there but I am sure a majority of them will be. This website will serve as kind of a second mentor. It will have a lot of the information that I need that is not on the other requirements page or the about page. It has more specific questions with specific answers which will serve me very well during this Capstone process.

https://sites.google.com/a/scienceleadership.org/capstone/

This is the Capstone website on Canvas. This website is very critical to my entire project. This website lead me to all of the requirements and expectations for my Capstone. It has all upcoming assignments and everything that will be due throughout the year for our Capstones. This website is important because I do not want to miss any aspects of the Capstone requirements. This website allows me to check over what we need and to ensure that I do not just meet expectations but that I exceed them.  Right now I am using this website very often to make sure that I am on the right track. I do not want to have a lot of work to cram at the end of the Capstone process and this site helps me with that. If I go at a certain pace and use this a reference for what I have done and what needs to be done I will be finished on time.

http://lunamathhelp.mics.me/

This is a previous Capstone done by a student that graduated in 2012. This is a great reference source for me because even though it is not the same topic it still has the same kind of format that I was going for. When I am kind of confused or I am not sure on what I should do for certain aspects I use this site as reference. Sometimes it helps to have actual student work rather than just a list of requirements. This project was done on math help and the way it is set up is easily accessible, neat, crisp, and clean. This is how I want my ending product to be like. I love this project as one of my sources because it received a great grade and that is also my goal.

https://www.scholarships.com/financial-aid/college-scholarships/scholarship-information/setting-up-a-scholarship/

This website is a guide for people that are hosting scholarships for students. After extensive research I found that this website was one of the most helpful guides for this topic. It explains how to start a scholarship minus all of the complicated lingo and the confusing requirements. It really gets down to the nitty gritty of how to do it. While it does that it also explains how to get people to take you seriously while you host this scholarship. Sometimes when you are trying to recruit people don’t take you seriously and this website helps with that. It also helps you explain to the applicant the importance of this scholarship so they apply with the same seriousness and respect that you had when you created it. This website is a great reference for me not just in the early stages but throughout all of the stages of this project.

Ella estaba mirando a Clemens entonces, él caminó a ella. “¿Hola Señora, cómo estás?”. Ella ve a Clemens y le dice “nada”. Entonces, Clemens habló otra vez. “¿Señora, estás bien?”.Después de cinco minutos el habló otra vez, “ Señor, no me conoces pero, sé mucho sobre ti. Eres Robert Clemens. El maestro de nombres de calles. ¿Es cierto, eh?” Clemens vio a la mujer con asombro.Él caminó detrás…. “¿Cómo me conoces?”

Sinceramente,

Rosaline Broad.”

“Rosaline Broad….. hmmmm.

Posted by Taylor Veasley in Spanish 4 - Manuel - E on Friday, March 28, 2014 at 12:00 am

Si, mucho arte yo me gusto.

Yo tengo “punching”, “What happens to the boys missing their fathers?”, “Chaos and Courage”.

Great Depression/Great Recession by Taylor Veasley and Martez Card

Posted by Taylor Veasley in American History - Jonas on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 2:12 am
For our project we chose to do visuals on easel.ly.com. We chose this because the themes and layouts for this website are really creative and fun so they would make the project enjoyable to look at. Each link will take you to a different visual, each describing wither the Great Depression, the Great Recession, or comparing both. Our project covers all aspects of both events and breaks the causes and effects down in a way that is both simple but informative. We worked very hard on this, so we hope you enjoy it !

http://iws.collin.edu/kwilkison/Online1302home/20th%20Century/DepressionNewDeal.html

This source is from the second part of a series called War, Depression, and War, 1914-1945. The source begins with an explanation of why the Great Depression began. They focus on the banks and the stock market aspect of the crash. Then the article goes on to talk about how other people view the Great Depression and what caused it. Then the article talks about how the government responded to the crisis. Then the author really dives into the New Deals and what they were and what caused them.

This is a very useful source. I find it useful because of first they way it is set up. The article is broken up with titles over each section describing what is inside of each. The article also provides an analysis of the Great Depression and of how people saw it and their opinions on what happened. There was one problem though, the article does seem a little bias in my opinion he mentions a lot of views but they all seem to be leaning towards the same thing.

This source is very helpful because it helped me get a clear view on what the New Deal and the Great Depression was also it helps me to analyze other people’s thoughts and compare my ideas upon theirs. I like this source also because it dives into theories and reasonings for happenings inside of this time period.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wF80co_Y_Bc
This source is a promotional video for the New Deal. The source talks about all of the problems that the New Deal will solve and how they will go about solving those problems. The purpose of this video was to gain supporters of the New Deal. The director did a great job at making the New Deal seem appealing to all citizens. The video covers a lot of aspects of the plan, they cover the jobs that the New Deal was supposed to provide, how the farms will be turned into roads so that trading is easier, and how different places in the US, that need it, will receive construction on failing roads and buildings.

This source is very useful because it shows you how the government wanted everyone to see the New Deal. The government sugar coated everything and made it seem like with this new and improved plan that everyone’s problems would just go away. You see just how media can easily shape someone’s decisions and beliefs and also how you only see what the government wants you to see.

This source was very helpful, I got a totally different perspective on the New Deal. This video showed you what the purpose of the New Deal was and the effect that they wanted the New Deal to have on citizens. The way it was delivered was very clear because it was made for the average citizen not a politician. I also learned a lot from the visuals throughout the video, they showed what the “average” american citizen looked like during that time period. I found this video very interesting and very informative.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/features/general-article/dustbowl-new-deal/

This source talks about Herbert Hoover and how he was elected mainly because of people believing him for promising the new deal and it made them excited and seem to have something to look forward to for the near future. This also talks about the things that he started to do during his presidency and things that he was changing hoping to please people and make the new deal work for the better and help get the country back on track. This also talks about the various things that the new deal made like 3 million men were able to work because of an program that was very successful within the new deal.

This is a useful source because it lets you know reasons as to why people chose Hoover and why they believed in the new deal. This also tells what the new deal was able to do and how it was able to create jobs to help people and get people to be able to have jobs again.

This source is helpful because it give me in depth details about the new deal and some of the things that it was able to change and how it helped people and also led to the choice of who won the election.

http://www.history.com/topics/new-deal

This source talks about when the great depression started and how long it lasted and also talks about the things that happen during the great depression. This source gives a basic general summary about the great depression and the big things that factored into it. This also talks about how president Hoover didn’t think that this was going to be as serious as it was and thought that this was just going to be something that would fly past really fast and then the economy would be back on track and back to normal. This source also states that the worse part of the great depression happen while Franklin Roosevelt was in office in 1933 and how within his 8 years in office he was able to help get the economy back on track and how his new deal permanently change the federal government's relationship with the US.

This source is useful because it talks about how Roosevelt’s new deal had an effect on the great depression and also how things were during this time while giving people a basic background on this historic event. This source also helps people see how these two presidents helped change the bad and help the economy become stable once again after a period of time and plenty of hard work.

This source is helpful because it summarizes the great depression and the main causes and reason for it also the main things and people that helped change the country to help us get out of this depression. Also this source can give information that you may not have known such as when the worse part of the depression and what things changed and impacted the US longer than just this depression.

http://www.stateofworkingwa.org/2011/swwa/policy/federal-policy-great-recession.htm

This source talks about the policy during the great recession and that one of the reasons for the great recession was having a poor policy and poor choices on the policy by the federal government. This source also talks about how the federal government made different and better choices from this recession to the one in 2008 and 2009 and how things became better during those two.

This source is useful because it explains a reason for the cause of the great recession and also lets you know about some of the choices that the federal government made that had an effect on the recession overall and how the changed choices they had in another recession were good.

This source talks about how the great recession affected people in europe and central asia and how it affected their countries. It splits up different causes for the great recession in chapters and labels them them by what big thing happened to contribute to the great recession then goes into detail about each one of the different causes throughout the whole chapter.

This source was useful because it gave me a better understanding about how the great recession affect other countries as well as america and also I learned about many different causes the contributed to the great recession and an in depth analysis about them.

http://www.npr.org/2012/12/08/166784038/the-great-recession-five-years-later

This source is very helpful and was a huge contributor to my knowledge of the great recession. The source is an interview given by a host on NPR and the interviewee was a specialist on America’s economy he also studies other country’s economies and compares them. I found the interviewee to be a wonderful source because he studies economies for a living and can give major insight on how we were affected with international economic knowledge.

The article speaks about why the Great Recession is still affecting America today and exactly how the Great Recession still affects us today. The interview gave the most insight into unemployment and how a lot of Americans are still unemployed even four years later. This was possibly the most devastating aspect of the Great Recession. We not only still have a suffering unemployment rate but it’s getting worse. Another aspect that I enjoyed and that was very helpful about the interview was that he also made predictions of what would happen in the future. Based on his knowledge of the European economy and our current economy he made predictions of what our economy will look like in the years going forward.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/wonkblog/wp/2012/11/29/happy-5th-birthday-great-recession-i-hope-you-get-hit-by-a-truck/
Happy 5th birthday, Great Recession! I hope you get hit by a truck. The title of this article says it all, while being incredibly witty and extremely sarcastic this source is very informative. This article begin with explaining exactly what the Great Recession was which I found very helpful. He did not go into extreme detail but covered the major points of this event and it was a wonderful refresher to remind us of what happened.

After reminding us of our economic crash the author goes on to dive into the effects of the Great Recession on our economy today. I think the most helpful aspect of the article was when he mentioned when the economy actually was revived. For a short time period our economy had hope, and this was the only source that actually acknowledges this. I found this to be very interesting and unique to this source. I also found that this article also mentions the European economy just like the source analyzed above. I saw that this was a  recurring pattern of mentioning European economies.

http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/243118/Great-Depression/234446/Sources-of-recovery
This was an amazing source, it covered just about every area of the Great Depression. The author didn't drone on about small details that wouldn't make much of a difference but they covered the main points of the Great Depression. I also liked this source because of the way it was organized, each page has what it is about at the title so if you're looking for a specific aspect of this event you can easily find it.

This source was used for all of our posts about the Great Depression because the information in this article was so helpful. The author spoke about the time leading up to the event and the time following the event. The author also covers how the event affected not just the people of the United States but countries all around the world. It was interesting to hear how this national epidemic went global. This article was organized very nicely and was well thought out.

http://www.britannica.com/EBchecked/topic/1661642/The-Great-Recession-of-2008-09-Year-In-Review-2009/286636/The-US-Response

This was another great source. It is from the same website as the source about Great Depression which I liked because then everything is kind of relative. If they are from the same website you can trust the information equally and articles have the same flow. This article flows smoothly and is concise and to the point. I enjoyed that the author did not make the articles very long and just went to main details because it makes it easier to read and comprehend.

The best part about this article was when she compared what Obama left out of his plan for the Great Recession that they used in the plan for the Great Depression. The author made that comparison of how America sometimes learns from their mistakes and sometimes does not. I found that very interesting. The other topics that were covered were kept short but the author went over the material very well and it seems as though a lot of work was put into the article to make sure that it was not only historically sound but also just quality writing.

This website was used to find the amount of money spent during the war by multiple countries. This website was extremely helpful and easy to understand.

http://americanhistory.about.com/od/greatdepression/tp/greatdepression.htm
This website was used to get the main points of the Great Depression. We did not use this website to address any reasons to why or hw anything happened just a very broad overview of this event. I liked this website for that very reason, that they have bullet points and little blurbs about each topic.

http://www.stockpickssystem.com/1929-stock-market-crash/
This was the website that was used to help us to figure out why the Stock Market Crash of 1929 happened. This website was helpful, it was a little hard to understand when you first read it but is actually broken down into convenient pieces that are very understandable if you pay attention to what you are reading.

Hamlet Annotation

Taylor Veasley

Water Stream

March 1, 2013

William Shakespeare was a man of complex thoughts and language, this makes his work a challenge to dissect and to analyze. Shakespeare’s Hamlet is recognized as an especially difficult piece of writing in literature because of the extensive vocabulary and the difficult story plots. The main character of Hamlet is a young man who loses his father and the story focuses on him avenging his father’s death. In this paper an excerpt from Hamlet will be dissected and analyzed. The excerpt that is going to be used was taken from Act 1 Scene 5, and was spoken by the Ghost of the King and spans from Line 9 to Line 24.

“I am thy father’s spirit.”(Act 1, Scene 5 Line 9)The very first line of this speech sets the entire piece up, it is a simple statement yet it is very powerful. Before this encounter the ghost never verified that he was the spirit of Hamlet’s father. So when he followed the first line with saying that he is walks on the earth at night and is confined to hell during the day. “Doomed for a certain term to walk the night And for the day confined to fast in fires,” (Act 1 Scene 5 Lines 10&11). I found it interesting and unexpected that the spirit was in hell considering how he was portrayed in the book leading up to this. Throughout the book whenever the King was mentioned he was spoken about as an honest and kind man so the sins that he speaks of were surprising. I also find it odd that after mentioning these sins Shakespeare never actually specifies what the sins were.

The ghost then goes on to say that he is sentenced to hell until his sins that he committed while he was alive have gone away, but that he is forbidden to tell why he is sentenced. “Till the foul crimes done in my days of nature Are burnt and purged away. But that I am forbid To tell the secrets of my prison house,” (Act 1 Scene 5 Lines 12-14) Again, I feel as though Shakespeare not bringing up the reasons for the King to be in Hell was an odd but seemingly intentional aspect. I believe that the reasons were left out because of the image that has been painted for us of the King. We see the King as a wonderful man and ruler and if Shakespeare were to change that perception of this character it could conflict with prerequisite ideas about this character.

The way Shakespeare has the ghost describe what will happen to humans if they hear of the horrible tales of the underworld is captivating. Shakespeare uses very descriptive similes when the ghost is describing what will happen to Hamlet if he tells him of the forbidden sins that explain why he is sentenced to hell. “Make thy two eyes, like stars, start from their spheres, Thy knotted and combinèd locks to part. And each particular hair to stand on end, Like quills upon the fearful porpentine.” ( Act 1 Scene 5 Lines 18-21) He compares Hamlet’s hair to that of a porcupine’s quills and his eyes to stars, both comparisons paint clear pictures of the reaction. After all of the description of all of the horrid side effects to what the spirit is about to tell him, the spirit says that if he loves his father then he will listen. “List, list, O, list! If thou didst ever thy dear father love—” ( Act 1 Scene 5 Lines 23-24) I saw this line as a sort of foreshadowing for what he was about to tell Hamlet. When the spirit said if you ever love your father it made me think that he was going to tell him of how he died. Following the speech that is being analyzed is another speech where the spirit tells of how he died.

Shakespeare’s language throughout this text is exciting. He plays with his words and plays with contrasts and comparisons of objects to body parts. All sixteen lines feature an important aspect of this speech. Because the speech is an opening to another piece of writing Shakespeare does a superb job on setting up the stage for the next piece to come along.

Physics Circuit Project by Taylor Veasley Water Stream

Artist Statement

It was a beautiful day in April at the outdoor flea market outside of the Eastern State Penitentiary when I first saw it. In the 2 years I had been attending this flea market I had never seen anything like it. It was love at first sight, radiant as it sat on the old creaky side table while its owner argued about prices and worth. It had so much history, someone’s “suitcase”, the box that once held their belongings, held in their nervous, excited palms, sweating with anticipation. I love thinking of the stories behind the person that left me with this object; the solid clink of metal as the gold clasps are undone, the smell of adventures, dreams and people forgotten escaping through the cracks. I believe this is much more than just a box, it once carried someone on a journey.  Whether they were just taking a vacation or running from the CIA makes no difference to me. I now carry my life in it, (though I don’t actually carry it around in my room) it holds everything that I cherish in life. I am creating my own history with it.

This box represents me because it has a certain nomadic presence to it, like at any moment you could fill it up with a few things and just go. Thats how I feel I am, like I could pick up my things and go anywhere that the wind would take me. The lights represent my future. When I open the box and the lights come on it makes me think about my life in the future. I think about the places I want to travel to, the experiences I want to have, the job I want to have, and who I want to become. I also like that the lights will illuminate all of the things that I place in that box that I value. The objects have to do with my present and past which will consequently affect my future.

I love the quote by Lana del Rey, “I belonged to no one who belonged to everyone, who had nothing who wanted everything with a fire for every experience and an obsession for freedom that terrified me to the point that I couldn't even talk about and pushed me to a nomadic point of madness that both dazzled and dizzied me.”  I feel like this box represents the freedom to do anything and go anywhere.

SIDE NOTE: My lights are lighting up but you cannot see them because it is too bright and because of the fabric they are hard to see
