If Casablanca was a Michael Bay Film

Posted by Tarleton Williams in Reel Reading · Giknis · C Band on Friday, May 25, 2018 at 1:00 am

Casablanca is an excellent film that is always remembered and imagined with the look and score of an older film. However, I remember thinking to myself that the final scene needed more explosions. It’s time to change the public’s perception of this film into something most people would consider to be the polar opposite.

David Williams Capstone

Posted by Tarleton Williams in Capstone · Ames · Wed on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 3:14 pm

My Capstone is a video documentary of the SLA Baseball team. I have incorporated both ground and aerial shots of games, and I conducted thorough interviews of the captains This shows their goals and achievements throughout the season, both as individuals and as a team. It captures all aspects of the sport. Inquiry was be the interviews, I did research on the sport of baseball, I collaborated with the baseball team and coaches, and I hosted interviews where I asked the captains to reflect on their season. This project shows the value of SLA sports and communities, and it shows what it means to be part of a team. By doing this, I have learned more about sports communities as a whole, and better filming and editing techniques. This project has enabled me to put my digvid skills to good use. This project worked for me, because I am a CTE student and it really shows the skills I have gained in CTE as a student.

“Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association, Inc.” Baseball , www.piaa.org/sports/baseball/. This website greatly helped me make my timeline. I did not know what to put on my timeline, because, I needed the SLA baseball team schedule to properly make the timeline. This is because I am filming all of their games and practices. The site had the full schedule on it and more helpful information about the league. It is important to have a source like this, because it will constantly be updated, providing me with fresh and useful information that I can use to make a good capstone. I am confident that this source is accurate and legit, as it is the official high school league website for al sports. NFHS, “2018 NFHS Baseball Major Rules Changes”, http://www.piaa.org/assets/web/documents/2018_Baseball_Major_Rules_Changes_With_Rationale. FINAL(1).pdf This source was crucial to my knowledge of the league. It had very important rule change information. It showed me what this years major changes to the rules would include. These rules included new baseball material regulations, bat attachment regulations, and a very interesting rule about first base sliding and run-overs. This source will greatly help me better understand the games while I am filming them. This will lead to better video quality and more dynamic camerawork. I am excited to use this information in my capstone and I feel like it will help me be more successful. NFHS, “Preseason Bulletin” http://www.piaa.org/assets/web/documents/2018%20Baseball%20Preseason%20Bulletin(1).pdf This source was very similar to the previous one, but it was much more in depth than the previous source. It had information on all the new big rules and all the new small rules. It had important information about the player behavior and the coach behavior. It talked about how players on opposite teams should interact with each other. This is all very helpful to me for my capstone. Now I know what to expect during games and I know what aspects of the game to look out for. This is a very important capstone source for me. MLB, “2017 Official rules”, http://mlb.mlb.com/documents/0/4/0/224919040/2017_Official_Baseball_Rules_dbt69t59.pdf This source was very important to my compare and contrast aspect. At some point in my capstone, I will be comparing and contrasting the high school league baseball rules to the professional baseball league rules. I feel like this will greatly help me capture the unique aspects of high school baseball, ultimately boosting the quality of my capstone project as a whole. This simple source has made me more confident in turning a great capstone with many creative elements. I am very confident in myself that I will use this source well and that it will add something truly valuable to my capstone. Whistle Sports, “World of Baseball”, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hw4uEOb_USQ This video was very intriguing to me. It really captures the excitement in baseball. It was very energetic and crisp. This was posted by a verified page on youtube, so I feel confident that it is very creditable as a source. Even though it was short, running at only 6 minutes, I feel like it really captures all of the important aspects of baseball as a whole. I think this would be a good role model for some parts of my capstone video documentary senior project. At first, I was hesitant to use a video source, but this video proved me wrong. Scully, Gerald W. “P.” Pay and Performance in Major League Baseball, www.bing.com/cr?IG=246A9D6A83D84672A1BDA2B62F6C0742&CID=14E0239110B163E2162B2 812111E6258&rd=1&h=fMDMvTi4qf9F_pIUhSLpcV8w5_ulbYM2as89sDqGjO4&v=1&r=http%3a%2f %2fwww.jstor.org%2fstable%2f1815242&p=DevEx,5050.1. Unfortunately, I was not able to view the full document. However, I was able to find a website with a portion of this writing available for free. I am very grateful to have stumbled across this helpful document. The excerpt that I read contained very helpful information about the pay and performance of baseball players, hence the title, “Pay and performance in Major League baseball”. The viewpoints in this writing were both unique and intriguing to me and I am happy to use this as a source in my documentary project. MaxPreps, “Science Leadership Academy Baseball” http://www.maxpreps.com/high-schools/science-leadership-academy-(philadelphia,pa)/baseball/hom e.htm This source will possibly be the most valuable one I have. At first glance, it doesn’t seem like much, but it actually contains some extremely useful information about the SLA baseball team. It contains all of their records from previous seasons played. This is going to be great in my documentary for comparing and contrasting the team’s performance between previous seasons and this current season. I believe it will also be updated during this season to show their current win/loss ratio and other stats. I am excited to use this source in my documentary. PIAA, “Preseason Bulletin 2017” http://www.piaa.org/assets/web/documents/2017%20Baseball%20Bulletin%20V.pdf This source is similar to another one on this document. That source is the 2018 season bulletin. I figured that having both of them will help me compare and contrast the different rules and regulations of the 2 different seasons. This will help me when I compare and contrast team performance, because it is important to know the conditions and rules of each game and each season when comparing 2 things so that the information gained will be very accurate and fully reflect their progress as a team unbiased. I look forward to further advancing my capstone with this link. Major League BAseball Productions, “The official history of baseball” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HMZzsV3xi8Q This link is another baseball documentary. However, this one is more focused on the history of the sport. It is significantly longer than the first one used, with a runtime of about an hour and ten minutes. This source will go well in my introduction. I can model my introduction with some historical facts about baseball and I feel like this will give some strength to my documentary as a whole. Even though though this is about the history of a different league, I feel confident that I will find a way to incorporate these facts smoothly into my capstone baseball video documentary project for my 2017-2018 senior year. “Baseball - the Basics.” BBC Sport, BBC, 26 Oct. 2005, news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/other_sports/baseball/3562135.stm. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/other_sports/baseball/3562135.stm This is my final source. It is one of the keys to my castones success. This source is all about the basics of the sport of baseball. It talks about the flow of the game, the positions, how the game works, etc. This will help people who don’t understand the sport of baseball very well better enjoy my documentary. I feel like this great source is crucial to include facts from in my video project for science leadership academy. If people can’t understand the sport, then how will they understand my documentary? Exactly, they won’t. That’s why I must include a basics section for the game in my documentary capstone project.

Freeze

Posted by Tarleton Williams in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 12:41 pm

I was 14 when I first realized what I was capable of. I was in the middle of 8th Grade at the time and I remember it like it was yesterday. It was a Monday and as usual, I had spent my weekend gaming and ignoring my homework. Little did I know I had a quiz that day. I walked into math class and was confused when I saw everyone reviewing their notes. I located my best friend Coltrane in the corner and sat next to him.

“Whats everyone doing?”, I said to him,

“they are studying for the quiz.”, he replied.

I had completely forgotten about the quiz and this wan no ordinary quiz, it was a call-out quiz. This meant that the teacher would say something like 2 squared or 14 squared and we had to write down the answer as soon as they said it. “2 minutes to prepare!”, my teacher shouted as she handed out papers. I always hated how she yelled in class everyday for no reason. All it did was make me more worried about this quiz and by the time it was about to start I was very upset that I forgot about it.Then the teacher started calling out numbers to square and that's when I lost it. I started yelling in my head as the teacher kept calling out questions. “Why can’t time just freeze!”, I yelled in my head, furious at the situation. And that's when it happened; time just froze. It wasn't for long, but somehow I knew I had 5 minutes.  Don't know why I knew this, but I could feel it. I tapped my friend Coltrane and he didn't move. The clocks had stopped ticking. I tapped everyone in the classroom including my teacher, and nothing. So I decided to give my quiz grade a boost. I went up to the teacher and got the answers off of the paper she was reading from and wrote them on my quiz. Once I did this, I felt the urge for time to start up again, even though it hadn't been 5 minutes. In my head I was trying to harness this power and make time start again, but it took some hard concentration. Long story short I passed the test, and every other test, quiz, homework assignment, and project for the rest of that year. Whenever I froze time, I became more skilled and could do it for longer periods of time. For example, the first time was only for 5 minutes, and by sophomore year I was able to freeze time for an hour. The only downside to freezing time was that the longer I froze it for, the more exhausted I would be when it resumed. This ability was the only reason that I passed in school and it was the best thing I could have asked for. I remember my first time using my powers to steal something. I was in 9th grade and I had been working for about a month at this coffee shop. It was nice there and I made a solid salary of 9 bucks an hour. I had been saving up for this $1000 dollar Drone that I really wanted. I had been eyeing the drone since last Christmas when it used to cost $2000 dollars, but it was half off now. Even with it being half off, I still didn't have enough for it, so I froze time and stole it from the store. I felt odd after doing it because I knew it was no right for me to do this. I ended up returning it and waiting until I had the money to buy it. If there's one thing these powers have taught me it's patience. Things actually take longer for me than other people. For example I could freeze time for an hour to do an assignment and when I unfreeze time it's resumes from the point at which it froze. This means that no matter how long I freeze time for, it all happens in the blink of an eye for everyone else. But back to the story. The truth is, I don't really know how I got these powers. I’ve come up with many different theories, but none of them really make sense. So I just stopped trying to figure it out. My life is truly one of a kind, but in everyone else's eyes, it was normal. I had a few good friends all through high school, my best friend being Coltrane from middle school. Now usually friends are always there for you during tough times, but my life so far didn't really include tough times, so I was always there to help my friends. Whether it was homework, or relationship problems, I was always there for my friends, and if I knew if I ever did fall on tough times, they would be there for me. However, there were also many times when I had to get my friends out of trouble. One time, I was walking home from school, and I saw my friend Coltrane arguing with these 3 guys. It wasn't long before he swung on one of them and then all 3 went after him. I sprinted up to the fight and dropped the guy on my right with a quick right cross while Coltrane dropped the guy on the left with a massive uppercut. The last guy just stood there and looked at us with his hands raised.

“You guys messed with the wrong kid”, he said.

“Oh yea? And why’s that?”, Coltrane replied.

He pulled out a Pistol and fired right at my chest, and luckily I was able to freeze time before the bullet made impact. I grabbed the bullet and tossed it to the ground. Then I grabbed his gun and unfroze time with me pointing the pistol at him.

“Don't mess with me or my friends again buddy”, I yelled at him.

Then Coltrane hit him with a hard jab, knocking him out.

“You okay bro?”, I asked him.

“Yea i'm fine, but how did you do that?”, he replied.

“It's a long story bro”, I said

We never spoke about that day again, and I glad, because that would be really hard to explain to him. There have been other times that I took care of my friends that didn't require my powers. In fact the hardest part of my life was accepting the fact that I couldn't use my powers for everything. That's the one thing I always failed at. Let's fast forward to the darker times in my life. One of my darkest days was when I lost my best friend Coltrane. It was all my fault, I tried to make things better with my powers, but I only made them a lot worse. It was a cold Monday night, and believe it or not, I was having actual problems in life. My other friends all thought I was crazy, but my friend Coltrane actually believed me, because of the incident we had years ago. I kept uncontrollably freezing time. I called Coltrane and told him to meet me at out old middle school at 7 pm. I needed a mutual area where I knew no one would see us and since the old middle school had been shut down, it was perfect for the occasion. I met up with Coltrane outside of the abandoned building.

“Let's go in”, I said

“Ok bro, but make this quick”, he replied. When we went in, the school looked so lost to me. I couldn't believe how a place like this that held such happy times in my childhood could have turned into such a mess. It was awful, the lockers were topples all over the hallways, graffiti was everywhere and the place reeked like nothing I had ever smelled. We were walking through the halls when it started happening. I started glitching with time. For some reason it only happened when I thought about or visited a place from my past, almost like time was urging me to go back and re live the memories, but I knew it was impossible.

“David, what's happening to us?!”,

Coltrane yelled. And then, just like that, he was gone.

“Bro where are you!”, I yelled, then I had a flashback to the call-out quiz that I was taking right before I passed out. And when I woke up, I was there taking the quiz. But something wasn't right, time was frozen and there was nothing I could do about it.

Everything Wrong With the Fast and Furious Franchise

The original The Fast and the Furious, back in 2001, was a poorly made summer film in which Paul Walker and Vin Diesel did a lot of driving, yelling, and dirty looks. The plot was only there to support the film’s many street racing scenes, where there was no real display of skill except for that generated by CGI. The Fast and Furious movies are all very exaggerated and unrealistic.

In the sequel, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Walker went solo and the film itself was basically a copy of the first one with way more up misogyny. For example, in the first race scene, Paul walker and 3 other characters (never seen again after the race scene.) are preparing to race. The camera focuses on the car of the only black driver in the race as a barely dressed woman walks up to him. She takes his hand and puts it on her breast and says, “this is your win or lose. But if you win, you get her too” she points at another poorly dressed woman. This scene is also slightly racist as only the black man has the longing for women.

After  2 more stereotypical street racing movies, the fifth installment in the series, Fast Five, earned an oddly large amount of positivity and good reviews, even from those who has previously disliked the movies. Fast Five is “certified fresh” on Rotten Tomatoes, with 77% positive reviews, and critics saying that it :injects new life into the franchise.

Fast Five begins where the fourth film, Fast and Furious left off. After helping Dom escape from a prison bus, Brian and his girlfriend who happens to be Dom’s sister Mia move to Rio to hide out. However, as soon as they arrive they get involved with a crazy theft supercars from a moving passenger train which ends with Dom and Paul driving a car off a 100 foot tall cliff and jumping into a lake right before impact without a scratch. After this, a typical tough-guy DSS (diplomatic security special agent), played by the rock comes into play, causing the main characters a lot of difficulty throughout the movie. Meanwhile, they discover that the theft was not for the cars, but for a small chip inside one of the cars with  details of a dangerous drug cartel. When Dom and Brian realize how rich the cartel’s leader is, they decide to stage a daring heist.

Here’s where the story gets interesting. We see the standard heist movie scenes of gathering a crew, planning the heist, talking about what they’ll do with their cut, and then towards the end of the movie, we find out that we never really knew what the whole plan included. The train chase scene that op Fast Five is well made and gripping for the audience. So is its closing heist, where two cars pull a huge vault around the streets of Rio, wreaking havoc all along the way. There’s a car chase scene towards the beginning of  Furious 6 that is also very well made. The closing scene, that includes the gang stopping the antagonists from escaping on a plane, is also a good scene.

Even though these movies do have gripping scenes, most of them are very unrealistic and cartoon like. For example, The Rock falls almost 15 feet onto the top of a car, then is launched from it, and lands in the middle of the road, then starts shooting at the car without showing any evidence of injury. Vin Diesel jumps from one car to another to save Letty, and makes it look like ha can fly and land on a car 15 feet away while holding letty without a scratch. Most importantly, the final action scene with the plane chase takes about 15 minutes, meaning the runway had to be at least 100 miles long.

Here’s the primary concern, all of the movies have two well crafted and gripping action scenes(beginning and end), but the meat of the movies is just a bunch of tough-guy nonsense. Both films run about two hours and ten minutes, and there's just no reason for that,  because that means lots of scenes of things going boom, yes, but that also means lots of scenes of people talking to each other, and those scenes tend to bore an audience of an action movie.

This is my best 2fer ever, because I put a lot of work into this one. I researched for hours and watched a lot of the Fast and Furious movies to analyze them. This also took me way longer than it should have, because I wanted to make sure it was crisp and well said.

Shrew Along  2

Ride Along 2/Taming of the Shrew

The movie “Ride Along 2” is about a man named Ben, and his friend James. He is trying to marry James’ sister, Angela, but James won't let him marry until he proves himself as a cop. He agrees to do it, mainly to impress Angela so she would be more willing to marry him.  James is a very experienced cop and Ben is a new recruit. It's not realistic, because in real life, couples would never be expected to prove themselves in the way that Ben had to for marriage. However, it does highlight some male and female expectations in a relationship. TIn the movie shows how different the expectations can be for males and females in a relationship. Ben and James fly to Miami on a mission to stop a dangerous drug lord.“The Taming of The Shrew” also shows a lot of the male and female expectations in a relationship in  Shakespearian Europe. It is interesting to see how they have evolved since 17th century texts. From the book to the movie, men and women in relationships expect the same things, but in different ways.

"Say as he says, or we shall never go"

(Act 4, Scene 5)

At this moment in the play, Petruchio is testing Katherine by saying false things and seeing if she agrees. She pushes back until Hortensio says the quote above. Katherine finally agrees with Petruchio. This shows that what Petruchio wants in a relationship is compliance and submission. On the flip side, In Ride along 2, we can see that there are very different expectations at play.

In this scene, Ben is talking to Angela about how him and James are going away for a little to do some police business.  However, Angela actually wants him to go, so she can plan their wedding, but she doesn't tell Ben this and acts surprised when he brings it up. He makes it sound very important, but what he is really trying to do is win James’ approval for their marriage. He also wants Angela to see him as a better man after this. This shows that Ben thinks his girlfriend expects him to be an amazing man, when in reality, she just expects him to be himself.

"First, kiss me Kate, and we will"

(Act 5, Scene 1)

At this time in the play, Kate and Petruchio do not have any problems with each other. They also have lost all of their attention. Kate wants to go to the wedding banquet, and Petruchio says the quote so that he could draw attention to himself and Kate again. This shows that Petruchio expects attention when in a relationship. This theme also exists in Ride along 2, but it's a little different.

At this point in the movie, Ben is talking to Tasha, as she is dating the drug lord that they are trying to catch. When she refuses, Ben shows her his phone, which reveals that not only is he cheating on her, but he gave all of the other girls cool ringtones, but he gave her a stock apple ringtone. This is enough to make her talk. It shows that women expect to be the only girl that their man talks to and that they must be a priority in his life.

“The Taming of The Shrew” shows that men expect control over their spouse and attention from the outside world. “Ride Along 2” shows us that women expect their spouse to make them their one and only, and they want attention from their spouse. However, one unifying theme that exists for both men and women in both the book and the movie is that everyone expects trust in a relationship, and trust is priceless.

From Bad to Good

What I’m really trying to say is  I feel like high school was a big burst of freedom in my life, but I have problems adapting to the amount of freedom. It's like going from prison to a beach in hawaii. I was so amazed at the simple fact that I could have my phone out during lunch, because at my old school, it was run by a bunch of strict catholics and I wasn't even catholic and as soon as something happened, they all tried to blame me for it. We had lunch for 20 minutes then a 20 minute recess, and sometimes recess before lunch. Never could we have our phones out, not even during the after school program where they babysat us. It was so strict, they had this fake holiday every year called mercy day AND IT WAS ON MY BIRTHDAY EVERY YEAR. I swear they made it up just to piss me off. Some kid wrote graffiti on the bathroom walls, and the teachers called every boy in the school up to the office and told them to write who they thought it was and why on a piece of paper. 5 out of 60 kids wrote that it was me, because they wanted to get me in trouble, not because i did it, but because they didn't like me. The teachers called me in the office and said that they knew it was me because 5 FRICKIN KIDS SAID SO. We had strict rules. Detentions were given out for anything.

Here's where the real story starts from my point of view.I'm in Language Arts class, and my teacher is lecturing us on something, but i'm not paying attention. I start zoning out and falling asleep when I hear a loud announcement over the P.A. system. “ Will every boy from 5th to 8th grade please report to the conference room NOW!” “This can't be good”, I say to my friend myles as we all head for the conference room. “No it can’t.”, he says back. We all arrive at the conference room confused and we see out principal and 4 staff members looking very upset as they usher us in. We take up the entire room with no space to spare, most of us are sitting on the floor, and then the principal starts showing us some pictures. They are pictures of the bathroom stalls, but they have graffiti on them. “Good god”, I think to myself someone wrote F*** the principal. We all look around. Me and my friend Vaughn exchange concerned looks. The room starts to hum as we all talk to each other about how dumb we all thought this was. “QUIET!”, Our principal yells. We all snapped back to the quiet and we are all edge. The staff members start handing out index cards to all of us and when everyone had one, the Principal yelled for silence. “Now , I want everybody to write the following on their index card, Dear Principal, I am deeply sorry about what has happened. Then we had to write if we saw anyone do this, or who we thought was the culprit. We all took out our pens and wrote. I thought to myself about how stupid this was.

“People could literally lie and blame the kids they don't like, and sure enough, I was called to the office 20 minutes after we were dismissed. It rang out in L.A. class while I was mid nap. I woke up to the loud words of, “David Williams report to the office NOW”, this made me regret not telling the teachers why this was a bad idea. “Maybe my enemies had all decided to report me like that”, I thought to myself, “maybe they're doing this to every student. “Maybe they're calling me in to tell me who really did it. When I got there, I was about 8 teachers sitting at a round table. “Grab a seat”, one of them said. “This doesn't feel right”, I think to myself. “Why are they all looking at me like this?”. Then the Principal held up a picture of the graffiti and said, “I have 5 papers that put you here”. “You’ve gotta be frickin joking”, I said in my head, careful to keep my cool. I said to the teachers, “how does 5 kids saying that I did this mean I did anything. They probably just want to get me in trouble.” “this is no form of real proof, and I don’t think it’s fair to accuse me like this.”, I said, “and I'm not the type of kid who writes these kinds of things. Now here's the part of the story that hasn't been relevant until now. You see, earlier that day, me and a few kids happened to be in the bathroom and we were all bored, so we started throwing a washable marker at the mirror, making small blue dots on it.  We found it fun compared to class. Now the graffiti was written in red permanent marker, so obviously us and the person who wrote it had very different intentions. But that's now the point.

The point is that the teachers tried to use that against me, just because I was reluctant to tell them about it, and of course my friends ratted me out. So basically my teachers didn't trust me and I didn't trust anyone, except for my only 2 friends. I really hated my middle school for 2 main reasons: I could barely trust anyone, and my teachers never trusted me. It took the help of my parents for me to win what my teachers turned into a whole court case.

My whole perspective changed on my first day at SLA. My mom drove me and dropped me off at 7:30. That was the earliest I had ever been to any school ever. I got free breakfast! “This school is already great!”, I thought to myself. At SLA during my first lunch, I quickly realized that we were allowed to use technology. It was an amazing change in my life. I want from hating my school to actually somewhat enjoying it. At SLA was able to enjoy myself without getting in trouble. I felt like I belonged , and I found new ways to express myself, like scooting. Overall, SLA was a big jump and took some getting used to, but it was a great decision and I'm happy right where I am.

Skateparks for Cities

For many years, skateboarding, scooting and BMX have been popular worldwide. However, skateparks have not always been around for all that glory. So, naturally, riders made the world their skatepark. As adventurous as that may sound to some, this wreaks havoc on city structures and concerns civilians. Somehow there's just something about a kid on a skateboard or a scooter that terrifies people and makes them want to call the police. It is clear that kids riding on city structures is not good for the city or the general public, but how can skateparks affect the city health and the reputation of skating? Maybe if kids have a designated place to skate, it will keep them out of other areas.

Every city needs a skatepark so riders have a place to enjoy themselves. However, many people associate skateparks with drugs and trouble. This may be true sometimes, but for the most part, this is not the case. Skateparks help riders form strong community and have a place to socialize with each other. It's  place where riders. can express themselves. They can forget about their problems and just ride. For example, the recently opened Paines skate park in Philadelphia… The paines park fund website even says that their goal is to make a skatepark available within a 10 minute walk of every skater. Their site shows how the parks can form strong communities and keep kids out of trouble and just what a positive influence it can have on everyone.

In Philadelphia, skaters loved Love park. It is considered by many individuals, “The skatepark of Philadelphia.” It hosted the 2001 and 2002 X-Games. Riders loved it so much that documentaries were made about Love park made by skaters and just people alike. To many skaters, these things became their culture but unfortunately for everyone, skating still remained a nightmare for the city. People started complaining about the drug use and destruction of property. This led to the banning of skateboards in Love Park. Police were  assigned to maintain the grounds clear at all times of the day. This hurt the city as a whole because the riders spread out and rode in even more places and some even retaliated against the police.

Obviously, riders found loopholes in this and somehow still proceeded to skate at Love Park. This also gave them motive to find more places in the city to ride at. However, something had to change, so the city began construction on Paine’s park. This was possibly Philly’s biggest breakthrough. When paine's first opened, there was a huge ceremony that just about every skater in the city attended. There were speeches about why philly really needed a skatepark in the center city area. They explained how Love Park was becoming unuseable by the public because of skaters and how paines was really needed. They even cut a golden ribbon, which showed how proud they were to have built paines park.

After paine's opened, skating at love Park began to die down. The park was so packed that skaters had to form lines to ride the park. It was a miracle for the city, because people could enjoy love park again and skaters had their place of recreation. This alone proves that something as simple as a skatepark can do so much for a city. Skaters are actually coming from other areas to ride at paines, so it has a ripple affect to areas near philadelphia. The number of skaters at love park and in similar areas had greatly decreased and paines has become a magnet for community. would see a beautiful community where almost everyone gets along and enjoys their time there. So what does a skatepark do for a city, it creates a city wide equilibrium, keeps the general public happy and keeps skaters out of trouble.

Fabian Colon has been a big reader since the 6th grade. His one childhood book that he still likes now is the giving tree. His favorite genre of books is mythical. So he likes books like Percy Jackson and harry potter. When he is happy, he likes to get right into the news! To him, reading is looking at words and taking them down.

Children On Their Own

Posted by Tarleton Williams in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Friday, April 8, 2016 at 2:26 pm

In the world we live in today, children are not safe all the time. Without their parents, children can not grow up and survive correctly. Life was made for children to have parents to guide them through the struggles of life. A lot of children die on their own and this is a common event. According to ABC news, there are some children that have gone missing up to 15 years ago that have still not been found. This relates to Lord Of the Flies by William Golding, because the kids in LOTF prove multiple times times that they are not ready to be without adults. They seem very civilized in the beginning, but shortly after that, many savage events occur and the children take a lot of mental damage from that. Children think they can do anything and that's exactly why they need the supervision. That’s why they need their parents, to learn that they aren't invincible or they'll grow up making terrible choices.

In Lord Of The Flies, there are these kids stranded on an island without any adults. One of the first things that you hear the character piggy talk about is where the adults are. This is foreshadowing that something bad will happen without them. And this is proven to be true when the boys all get in a big arguement. It doesn't help that they're all boys so there will always be an argument over power. They were all obsessed over this conch which had no true purpose but to call others into a gathering. But they are all so content on thinking that it means power and that whoever holds it is a leader. However, this argument ends in Piggy's death. He was holding it and someone threw a rock at him and he fell to his death. They boys also lose someone prior to this. They are also always talking about a beast, but if they had an adult, they would know better. This is because once a child’s mind is on something, that becomes all they think and act on until it is no longer important to them.

If they had adults with them, then Piggy most definitely would not have died. There would be much more structure to their rules and living habits. Now the kids can just be savage without any authority. Kids simply can’t just raise themselves. Adults can have a big influence on kids lives. Some kids even go back home with their parents after college. There is a CBS News story by Erin Donaghue that many are familiar with where 3 young women were kidnapped for over 10 years. Luckily one escaped and ran for help. Some of these women were adults. So when it gets to the point where young adults can be kidnapped, then you know kids need adults to be safe.

Now the kids In Lord of the Flies think they are in danger from a beast, when they are actually in danger from themselves. This obsession causes some to die. As I said earlier, an adult would be able to identify that what the children saw was not anything to worry about. The adult would be the leader no questions asked. The adult would protect the kids and feed them, and leave no one behind. They would probably find a way to contact someone much sooner and would have been rescued much earlier.

The book Lord of the Flies illustrates many issues and important topics for us to think about. It answers the question, “What happens when a bunch of young boys are stranded on an island. It shows that people should know better than to leave their kids alone in this world. People just don't understand that this is not a perfect world. Little kids can be heard all the time saying I can fly, but if their parents never showed them that they couldn't, they would go too far one day and jump from way too high up. Kis fantasize all the time about being superheroes, which is good. It is great to have an open mind. As long as children realize sooner or later that not everything is possible before they try something dangerous.

So after all of these facts concepts, and examples there are core values. William Golding's core value and lesson in Lord of the Flies are that power is not everything and that power thirsty people usually go mad. Arguments over power are simply not needed. Everyone wants to be on top, but not everyone is deserving of the top because they use those who are lower than them as a staircase to the top. Adults can be very civilized over power, but given the right circumstances, they can also be very savage. The show survivor is a good example of this point. Now when you take these same circumstances and use children instead of adults, they will go from civilized to savage in seconds. Children's minds work much differently than the minds of adults. They often act like they are ready to be adults but are never ready to be and they never have nearly enough experience to do so. So the main message of this essay is very simple child equals an adult protecting them and helping them grow. So this what to take out of this essay, Children are not gods and no matter how confident they are, they will never be ready for or understand true adulthood until they have kids of their own.

ADHD

But you don’t understand! It's not always me! I didn't mean to do it jeez! You Don't know what i’m going through. I don’t feel well and I really don’t need to be bothered with you right now! Don’t focus on me! Just teach your fricken class I’m not even distracting anyone! That's it! I’m leaving now!

I’ve had it with you. Every day I wake up normal but by the time I get to school so much happens. Every morning I have to take this crappy medication for my adhd which only makes me unhappy and never hungry. So when I get home I am starving and depressed. I can’t go through life like this. My parents blame the not eating on me when in reality they're the ones giving me this fricken medicine every damn morning. They say it will help me but it never does. So now I have to go through life in the worst way possible. I always feel upset in class because I feel like a part of me is missing everyday. Then when I’m upset in class and my teachers write petty emails home, my parents never even think about the damn medicine. They always think it’s my fault for everything. They think i’d do worse without the medication. They don’t know anything about me. All they seem to talk about with me is my “blame shifting” and my attitude in school, but those meds ruin me everyday and they don’t get it yet.

I don’t know how long it will take them to get or something dumb happens. I already ran away freshmen year from the same thing and now they're pushing me further and further to do it again. It was never genetically proven that i had adhd either! All because I was a very loud and happy boisterous person. So they thought that after hearing about me being loud in school that I had to have adhd. And they just HAD to have a fricken perfect damn child and they gave me all this crap to take in the morning. And then I get in trouble for not eating. They always change the subject or cut me off when i’m talking to them about it. They think I blame everything on it and that I must take it.

My parents are catholic education at heart and I can’t do this on the daily. They could at least give me my scoot back. I used to be able to de stress and relax before school, but now they took it because of school and now i’m having twice as many problems. I tried to have this conversation with them many times, but they're not budging at all. They think whatever my teachers say is always true and that i’m always lying. I already ran away once and it’s like they never learned from it. They are so tangled up in my adhd (that I probably don’t even have) that they are losing their own son and don’t even notice it.

“David you can go ahead and walk up to the office then!”

No, I am NOT going to the office. You know what, forget you. (Walks away.)

I need to talk to someone. (pulls out phone)

(texting on phone) Why cant my friends give me any advice! I'm gonna get another progress note when I get home and I’ll have to deal with my parents again for the 100th time!

(sarcastically) Now that's just GREAT! Now I have to get the train home and deal with this!

Then I come home to a progress note about my behavior in class and I notice the teacher has disregarded all that I said about my condition, “Here we go again”, I say to myself. Now I am where i’ve been 100 times before. The future seems dark for me.

The "Fun" Language

Posted by Tarleton Williams in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Tuesday, November 10, 2015 at 7:49 am

The Fun Language

I speak in a very unique way to everyone around me. This causes people that either love me or hate me. This unique language really didn’t start until around 4th grade. That was my first time with a lot of freedom to talk when and how I wanted. The transition almost ruined my life, but saved it at the same time.

Up until that transition,  I attended Waldron Mercy Academy, a Catholic middle school. It was very strict and dull. There was always a lot of homework and you couldn't use ANY electronics, not even at lunch or recess time. In fact, once, my phone  fell out of my pocket while I was walking down the hallway and my teacher picked it up.

“You can have this back in a few days.”, she said

“Why? It just fell out of my pocket.”, I said

“I should have been off in your backpack!”, she said

“Okay, but it was off and it only fell out of my pocket. I wasn’t using it or anything.”, I said

“No arguing. You'll see this in 3 days now for arguing with me.”, she said as I sulked away.

Basically,  my point is that my early school years had little to no freedom. This caused me to be somewhat quiet and shy, until 4th grade. That's when my classmate and I got a little more freedom and knowing me, they gave me an inch and I took a mile. So I became a happy and boisterous class clown. I always made sure everyone was laughing with and not at me. I started making friends with my classmates and enemies with my teachers. I really liked the life that I had chosen. This continued all the way up until 9th grade.

On my first day of SLA, I was very shy and quiet. Though, this changed in a matter of days,  meaning  I was back to good ol loud david by the 3rd week of school. I just needed to adjust to the kids in SLA. With all the freedom I got with this school that I am currently in, I just became a full on comedian, just like how I was at my old school. I was always loud and enjoyable to others. A lot of people said I was fun to be around, even some of my teachers! During the hour of my first lunch I decided to try and use my phone. I was shocked because I realized, it was allowed. I just got too excited which caused me to run around yelling things like

“FREEDOM… NO MORE CATHOLIC EDUCATION FOR MEE… SCREW UNIFORMS… SLA  FOR THE WIN!”.

Everyone thought this was hilarious and was so surprised at how little freedom I had in middle school. Whenever me and my friends came up with a good joke, I took it and entertained my entire classrooms with it. By the end of 9th grade year, the small amount of people that disliked me were cool with me and about 90% of my teachers hated me. I had gotten too many progress notes for being loud and disruptive I can’t even count them. Now my ADHD was a huge part of this and I stopped taking my meds for 9th grade year which was a terrible idea, because at the end of the year, my grade obsessed parents were upset with my barely passing grades. They punished me and tried to take my summer away. That was not the worst part, they made me do Khan Academy every day. The good news were that she was not home to watch me do it. So naturally, I played video games and scooted all day long. I wasn’t really a rebel unless I needed to be one.

This made my summer very fun, but I was not able to learn anything or prepare for 10th grade and when it came around, I was not prepared. My parents made me start taking my ADHD medication again and I felt imprisoned again. On the first day of 10th grade, I was somewhat quiet and all of my friends were surprised. It was mainly because of my meds and because I had some new classmates to adjust to, but as always, good ol loud david came out by the 2nd week of school. This loudness in my language made me very fun and also very annoying. I was very unfocused in class and at the same time, my meds only let me focus on one thing, but it wasn’t school. My unique language included things like,

“OH, I say that’s a BIT cheeky!”,

“That’s a little edgy m8 m9.”,

“Aw a bit of edgy banter if i do say so myself.”,

“The host with (*sticks tongue out for an exaggerated “TH” sound*) THE most.”,

And much, MUCH more. I had a lot of favorites and I always had so much energy in class. So I would take it and put it to my language, which in essence created a nuclear bomb.

I was off the rails in school. I needed a better way to release my energy without getting in trouble and ignoring teachers. My language was becoming a weakness for me in school, because it would always get me up to no good. So I decided the best way to release all that energy was to do the one thing I liked the most. I decided to practice my scoot tricks in the morning before school. This helped me so much. I was so much more focused and calm in school. I had less stress and with that I learned to control my language.

I made an alter ego for when I was speaking to important people and I started calming down and trying to not be so annoying in class. I began to speak properly to my teachers and parents. I began to use my language as a skill instead of a weakness. My parents always told my I had good talking skills. They told me that I worded things in a way that was very professional and persuasive. Now I sit back and think to myself just how powerful I have become from my language and all this time, all I had to do was reveal it.

Pollution

Posted by Tarleton Williams in English 1 - Giknis - A on Tuesday, April 28, 2015 at 10:29 am

Pollution is a very important worldwide topic, because we are killing ourselves. Third world countries are getting devastated by pollution. Did you know that highway pollution can cause autism in children? Over the years we have been destroying our world. Sooner or later, the full power of the sun will be unleashed, melting our world. There are so many other options for energy that we can use. For example, We can use windmills, solar panels, and even dams. We have hybrids and electric cars and planes! We literally have green fuel. My point is that we have all there great amazing alternate sources of energy.

This has always been an important topic for me, because I have experienced the effects of pollution firsthand. I have been conserving energy for my entire life. I convinced my parents to get cfls and to turn off the lights. I try to use cars as little as possible. The most common form of air pollution is smog. Ever been to Japan? Japan has the highest report of smog in the world. This is caused by overpopulation.  Overpopulated cities mean too many vehicles which leads to big time smog. Many people in Japan can be seen wearing masks to protect themselves from pollution this is a problem, but It can be easily solved.

The solution will take time, but it is very possible. We must focus more of our funding to saving this planet. We must slowly begin converting to clean green energy sources, starting with hybrid cars. They are not too expensive and they generate a lot less pollution. The big problem with industrialized countries is that they generate way too much carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.

Now plants suck up most of our co2, but not all of it. And that extra co2 goes straight into the atmosphere. We must reduce our carbon footprint. It was us who created things like acid rain. Third world countries are being devastated by our air pollution! Once we create it, it can travel in clouds and in wind all the way to places like afghanistan.

Electric cars people! They are not that expensive. Ever heard of the zombie car. Its an electric car that can accelerate faster than a bugatti veyron! My point is electric cars aren’t so bad and we should start using them. Some things I am worrying about is my original research, because I don’t know what kind of results I’ll get. I am thinking about doing field observation or a survey.

Q3 Art reflection

I feel like I did not accomplish much, because I missed half the work time due to sickness. If I could do it again, I would take it home and work on it. I think Elias's drawing is successful, because I know he put a lot of work into it. I learned that one pt prespective makes your artwork more sharp and accurate, but it is not really a form of art, just a template.

Net neutrality Blog

Posted by Tarleton Williams in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - b2 on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 8:09 am

Net neutrality is very important for teens to know about, because it can greatly impact their future. Without net neutrality, many of the websites that teens want to visit would be blocked. Teens should know that it will affect their parents also, because their parents will be the ones paying to use certain sites. It is unnecessary, because its already enough that we are paying for internet access, so why should we pay to use it. This generation of teens will not fare well from net neutrality.

Net neutrality can affect a teens learning abilities. For example, many schools, such as SLA are tech based. So if there is no net neutrality, their learning sites will be very limited and their school will have to require more money to pay for the blocked sites. Net neutrality could possibly ruin a school, because it discriminates against the middle and lower class citizens who can’t afford to pay to use certain sites. Public schools will require more money from the government, and this could cripple our financial state.

Teens should know who is supporting net neutrality and who is against it. Once they know all about how crazy the people against it are, they will possibly take actions against it. We must empower young teens to raise their fists for net neutrality. Net neutrality is what keeps the internet growing and thriving. It also keeps I.S.P.’s out of shady deals. This generation of teens is the generation that can save the internet, and that is why it is important for teens to know about net neutrality.

My new Slide

Posted by Tarleton Williams in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - b2 on Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at 10:08 am
I got various tips on making my new slide. I was told to make the focus on one photo, so I combined 3 photos into 1. I made my slide more visual, like the zen website said by making the color of a letter or number match the color of my background. I made text big and added visual clues. I had many other versions and I believe this is the most accurate according to the zen website.

All about me

Posted by Tarleton Williams in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - b2 on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at 12:36 pm
My slide includes some nouns that describe things in my life, like family and rowing. I put these in my slide, because words are important too. I made the color of the slide orange, because that is a bright color and will catch the eye easily. Most people don't put many pictures, but I think adding more pictures and less text is important, because most people look before they read.
