Expectations and Realizations
Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew sets up conventions and expectations for how women are supposed to act in order to be deemed suitable. In Taming of the Shrew, Katherine's narcissism and argumentative approach makes her "unfit" for marriage because she subverts the traditions of women as "submissive." Similarly in "Clueless," Cher, while attempting to scheme and set up relationships among her friends and family, does not have time for her own love interests. While both women share similarities with regard to social status and their attitude towards men, Katherine's expectations are challenged when she is forced into a marriage whereas Cher's are challenged when she realizes a relationship she tried to force herself away from was actually what she should have pursued. ---- “I’ll see thee hanged on Sunday First” "Quote from Play" (Act II, Scene I, 316) Katherine In this quote, Katherine is being forced into marriage by her father, and the madman that wanted to marry her named, Petruchio. Their first encounter was rough and violent with bad first impressions being left on both ends. Even so, when Petruchio went back to talk to her father he had given permission for her to marry him and their wedding would happen on that Sunday. Katherine says she would rather be hung than marrying petruchio, her reason being because of the expectations she has set for herself to not treat others nicely as they have not treated her nicely. It will not benefit her to marry this man based off her first encounter with him and from the expectations she has set. In the movie cher seems to have the same problem of having expectations and if a guy doesn’t live up to them then they aren’t worth her time. In the early scenes of “Clueless” Cher is walking on the campus of school with her friend Dionne and Dionne gets dragged away by her boyfriend Murray allowing Cher to walk ahead alone. As she is walking a guy approaches her and she pushes him away saying “Eww, get off of me. Ugh! As If!” Cher wants to keep the highschool boys away from her because they don’t fit her expectation of what a guy should be, look, and act. As she continues to walk once pushing the guy off she says, “ I don’t know why Dionne is going out with a highschool boy. They’re like dogs. You have to clean them, and feed them, and they’re just like these nervous creatures that jump and slobber all over you.” When the boys don’t fit the expectation she has set, they aren’t good enough for her. This shows the expectations she has set for herself that she has grown accustomed to by her status and society. She expects all the boys she dates to be older than her, more mature, and is on her level. “For me, I’ll not be gone till I please myself. ‘Tis like you’ll prove a jolly surly groom, That take it on you at the first so roundly.” "Quote from Play" (Act III, Scene II, 218:220) Katherine In “The Taming of the Shrew,” Katherine is telling her newlywed husband Petruchio that she will not leave to go to his house directly after their wedding because it does not please her to do what someone else wants her to do. Katherine tells her husband that if he loves her then he will stay and do what she wants. She is selfish and neglects to act accordingly even after she is married to Petruchio when during this time period, women are supposed to be the opposite and obey their husbands. In the movie Clueless, Cher is the same way when it comes to be being selfish, except she uses her selfishness to help others when it benefits her. In this scene Cher is driving around with her ex stepbrother, Josh, and is talking about all the volunteering she does. The thing is that the volunteering she does to help others only benefits her like getting her two teachers together so they will soften and give and her and her peers less work and better grades. Josh is a very sarcastic character who knows how Cher is so he expects nothing less even though he knows she could be more. The selfishness of her ways get her what she wants because that’s what she expects from herself and those around her. “Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee” -- “My mind hath been big as one of yours, My heart as great, my reason haply more, To bandy word for word and frown for frown; But now I see our l see our lances are but straws” "Quote from Play" (Act V, Scene II, 162:163, 186:189) Katherine In The Taming of the Shrew, Katherine has now come to a realization and saw expectations of how a woman should truly be and how they should act. She is talking to the other wives of the men about being obedient to their husband because they are their masters and their lives. She was in the` beginning a shrew person who took orders from no one and talked back to those around her. She met Petruchio and he helped her come to the realization that men do so much and deserve to be treated with the utmost respect. Petruchio used a method to get her to listen and believe what he says. Katherine gave in to the pressure and started to listen to what he says realizing that she shouldn’t have so many expectations for herself because it could be a lot worst and women that don’t listen and have many expectations get disappointed. In Clueless, Cher has to also have a realization to get out the habit of making expectations for herself that could disappoint her causing her to not realize what’s right in front of her. In this scene of the movie Cher is understanding that she love Josh, who has been there with her from the beginning. She realizes as she is describing him in the scene where she says, “ I mean he’s just like this slug who hangs around the house all the time. And he’s a hideous dancer.. Couldn’t take him anywhere. Why am I stressing? -- This is like, Josh. Then Suddenly.. Oh my god.. I love Josh!” In this statement she states all the things that are wrong with Josh, that would turn her off usually, but then she realizes none of that matters and her expectations for guys was just something that she let run her because of how she carried herself and saw the world. This can be seen in the The taming of the shrew when Katherine realized that women should obey their husbands and not be arrogant and complicated unlike her newfound self. |
In conclusion, throughout The taming of the shrew and Clueless, both characters Katherine and Cher make these realizations at the end of the book and the movie. In The taming of the shrew Katherine was a woman who didn’t listen to anyone, had a bad temper, and had these expectations set for her because it was expected due to her status and attitude. Whereas, in Clueless was a girl who had status and made herself believe she was too good for others that weren’t what her expectations sought to be. In the end they both saw different things through their relationships that things aren’t always what they seem to be. In society we put expectations on what relationships should be or who we should be with depending on we stand on the social ladder and the higher up you are the more expectations one tends to have. Therefore, for both of these characters we see growth through their actions and in the end they realize it shouldn’t be that way.
The lorax: by Julia,Emily,Zahira,& Waverly
Zahira or Lola: Struggling with my identity
My name is Zahira. I’ve had this name since birth it was given to me by my mother. I was kindly named after my brother Zahir, yep how original. When I was younger I realized people would come up to me and say “Hey pretty girl, what’s your name” and I would answer in my oh so cute voice replying “Zahira” with a cheeky smile. I wondered if that’s where it all began, this long journey of insecurity that I tend to wrap myself around like a blanket.
When you’re younger you never tend to realize or care enough to correct someone when they trip upon your name as if there was an imaginary foot there causing them to misstep. You don’t realize these things as much unless your name isn’t your average Suzy, Rebecca, or even Hannah. When your name is complex and tends to cause people to actually use their brains they often tend to be lazy. They pronounce it the way they want it to sound. You don’t want to be rude and make them sound dumb by correcting them and say “ Sorry, it actually pronounced (Za-ear-uh).” So, you tend to brush it off like it didn’t happen.
The bad part is when you constantly have to repeat yourself to someone when they ask your name knowing within a 5 minute span they’ll ask again because they forgot. The bad part is when you have to pronounce your name again for that person because the pronunciation is what they stumble on the most. The bad part is not feeling like you fit in because everyone around you has a name that you can remember without even trying.
There was a day I was out with my friend and we were going to meet up with some of their friends. Once we go to them they were rather friendly and were easy to talk to. Then came the part for names and I was excited to hear the names of my new friends. Until this day I still remember their names. Their names are Alicia, Katelyn, Avery, Josh, and Troy. Before I started to say my name I told them that it isn’t the hardest name but not exactly easy either. They agreed that it was fine and so I told them I didn’t particularly like my name but they insisted it was okay. Once I had said that my name was Zahira they then tried to pronounce it, they stumbled a couple of times so I had to keep repeating myself. At first it was fine until Alicia said, “”okay, so I’m not going to remember that can I just call you Z?” I looked at her and my expression read “Umm it isn’t even that hard but whatever,” and I’m pretty sure she could tell. She then continued calling me Z throughout the entire time which was by the way rather annoying since we weren’t close. They all followed along with what she did by calling me Z, but then Troy turned around not long after that and said, “Hey, Z so what’s your real name again I kind of forgot?” I then shot him the ugliest glare I could muster at the time and the friend I had came with saw and replied to him instead.
Have you ever thought about changing your name not just for amusement, but for an actual reason? Lola for me is an escape from living within this nightmare of insecurities. I’ve never wanted anything more than being able to fit in and not like an outcast. The funny part is that people only tend to want to change their name not for fun but for a serious reason. It wasn’t that I was getting bullied or anything but It gets tiring and I’m officially fed up with having to repeat myself for people to understand. It makes me feel like someone is playing with my insecurity purposefully even when they have no idea the effect that my name has on me. Does the name Lola make me feel secure? Maybe. Is the name Lola a mask to hide my flaws? Probably.
I was once watching this movie and the name of that movie was LOL and it was about this girl who goes by the name Lola who goes through highschool with many trials ahead of her. She goes through a lot and has many insecurities and a messed up family. I may not relate to the entire movie but the bases of that movie where I struggle and have many insecurities. Can you guess where the inspiration of my name Lola came from?
I don’t know many people who are insecure about their names. Usually when I say anything about my name to my friends they tend to say things like “Oh you look like a Zahira,” but what does a Zahira look like? I believe we say things like this because we don’t fully understand the meaning behind how a person can look like a word and or their name. We were born with that name, our parents didn’t name us based on how we looked. Most of the time your parents already had your name in mind before you were actually born. So, therefore how can I look like my given name? Impossible right? I don’t want you to think I don’t appreciate the so called compliment but it logically doesn’t make sense. I believe this is also a method of trying to make that person feel better.
How is one supposed to cope with having their name trampled repeatedly? How are they supposed to deal with being insecure about the thing that makes them who they are? Some people tend to just suck it up and deal with it unlike me, who actually started with the people closest to me to see how lola would sound. Then, I slowly started using the name Lola instead of Zahira if it was easier for the people. That didn’t make me a coward for not dealing with it how others would but it instead makes me more comfortable with myself.
My family does not know about my name change as of right now but I hope to one day tell them. I want to hope that they will support me but looking back at things like this in the past they weren’t exactly the biggest supporters. I had a cousin who changed their name from Nadia to Aidan and my family still to this day calls them nadia. I believe that’s very disrespectful to not respect a person’s wishes especially if it’s legal.
This problem will be a forever one at least for me it will. I believe you should be most comfortable with yourself and I am not when it comes to my name. I want to either become more comfortable with my name or change my name for good for the reason of making myself comfortable. I don’t try to offend people by getting defensive when I correct them when they mispronounce my name, but it feels like they’re playing with my insecurities if they do it more than once. Therefore, I want to in the future find a solution so I don’t keep feeling insecure about this.
Is there a Fashion Scam on Instagram?
Instagram plays a huge part in different people’s life from younger children to Adults. Children and Adults go on Instagram to see what their friends are doing and wearing. Showing off how one looks and keeping up with the latest fashion trends is a must. Everyone wants to be seen by setting a statement with what they wear so people either follow them or so they fit in. What’s different about Instagram is that these people do not have to be personal friends -- everyone follows celebrities to see what they are wearing so they can criticize and set the status of hot or not. Instagram has a popular influence on fashion and what becomes a trend because it encourages increased attention on celebrities. Instagram is known for its square photo but is there for entertainment reasons and advertisement for anyone who needs it. A picture is worth a thousand words, thoughts, and emotions.
Celebrities set trends when they post their outfits on Instagram or when they go to outings to show people what they think is a good fashion “do.” Fashion did not just appear out of thin air, there needs to be some type of person or thing to help set what is a “do” and “don’t” for fashion. For example, there Kylie Jenner who made knee high boot heels a trend that was in and she used instagram to show her followers that it was okay. On instagram she posted pictures of her wearing a tan dress and tannish-green knee high heel boots. She set that trend several times with multiple post with knee high heel boots. Once she started to wear them there were many other people who started to post pictures with knee high heel boots on. If anyone was to search #KneeHighBoots on instagram it is a very popular hashtag.
In highsnobiety, a fashion website, in their article 5 Trends That Died This Year (and 5 That Kept On Going) they give a description on Chelsea Boots. They talk about how back then thanks to Kanye West the boots became popular by him just wearing them and the trend of wearing those boots became popular. It is shown that trends die if they fall out of style and or don’t adapt. However, now the trend is dying but is not completely dead; an exact quote being “Dying, but still dope. The fashion in-crowd was more about Gucci loafers this year, and a ton of streetwear guys were wooed by the Yeezy-approved combat boot.” From this description, it can be seen that Kanye West going out and wearing those boots influenced males to start wearing them. Instagram is used as a tool to show off a product by using a celebrity as the face to sell that product and making it a trend. When these products are exposed to the majority, people start to wear them based off one person and that makes it a trend. It is different from a magazine because it’s free and also has a wider range for an audience. It also shows average people and their friends and others can also see people all over the world whereas in a magazine one can only see what they want to show.
Fashion designers can also be influenced in their designs by using instagram as a tool to connect with their audience because they know that their audience is there. Fashion designers are looking at what their audience is doing and how they dress and is taking that into consideration, basing their designs on that. Instagram today is changing how fashion has looked. In an article published on the website Social Media Today, it states “Just consider the recent ZAC Zac Posen’s Spring-Summer Ready to Wear 2015 Collection; influenced by comments and suggestions from his over 640,000 Instagram followers.” From this one post on instagram came a popular fashion trend, a maxi dress, where he got inspiration from a picture of him on the beach because his audience gave him these creative ideas. Just like this one post on instagram fashion designers today go and look at one’s daily life and try to pertain to that to attract their buyer.
If Older Adults stopped to think about it, they would realize that Instagram having a popular influence on fashion is not just about and or does not just involve what people decide to wear or show off , but what those clothes could expressed to a person in need as well. They do not understand that instagram gives a lot of creativity for a artist to express their work and reach out to their audience. So, everyone need to be aware of others and clothes aren’t made to just be worn but to express a need if necessary.

We watched Growing Up Online
What was this show about?
It was about teens who grew up in the generation of new technology and social internet interactive websites.
What is the most memorable thing to you about this show?
When the boy said he never read book only the summary online and when the girl who was anorexic went on websites that praised anorexic people.
Why/Why not - is it important to watch shows like these?
It's important to watch these types of shows because it’s important to have an idea about what your kids are thinking and doing online
How will you keep your future family safe online?
By telling them that everything that goes on the internet isn’t good and tell them everything that can harm them
Why is it important to talk with your family about internet safety
So, that nothing happens to them and they won’t go buck wild online and to keep their reputation in tact
What advice would you give to parents that don't know how to keep their children safe online?
I would tell them to show their children clips of predators online and people's children going missing from online interactions with strangers
New Slide pt. 2
Media Fluency Tucker
My Slide was designed on visuals in my head. I just thought about the most important things to me and then made the slide. I made the pictures of me bleed off the slide for more space and better visual. I had to take some things off my slide and give it a main focus “ME”. Everything on the slide has to do with me and everything that I love. I chose my colors based on if it would grab the viewer's attention. The size of the letters were so everyone could carelessly see every word That I wrote.
The actual slide is about all the things I love. I love Dancing and singing with a passionate if I could do anything it would be that. I am not a shy person and I love being in the spotlight or the center of attention. Whenever there is an opportunity I take it and don't look back. That is what my other slide is about how life is like a show and the curtain never closes so take chances with no regrets. Aaliyah is a symbol of who I want to be. She was herself no matter how many people tried to change her she stayed true to herself and everyone else. She was also a great singer and dancer and worked hard to become that.
I wanted the people who actually take away from my slide that I am a fun person who will work for what she wants. Also, that no matter what I will stay true to myself and my goals. Lastly, that I love living and singing and dancing are my passions that I won't let go.
