Artist Statement

During this quarter, I definitely felt more comfortable with my artwork. I really enjoyed doing some of the artwork that was required of me this quarter. One of my favorite pieces of art work was the assignment where we were told to edit a photo and show the before and after. I enjoyed this because it gave us a chance to do a different kind of art which I enjoyed. When I was doing my college, I wanted to pinpoint something that I saw a lot in modern magazines. And while flipping through some pages I realized that most of the ads pinpointed one demographic; Americans. This was perfect for me because not only do I love the United States of America, but i felt like it would make for a cool collage. I cut out all of the things That I saw that seemed like it was being pointed towards that demographic, and I came out with this collage.

While drawing the fabric, I just really wanted to get the shading right. I think I did a really good job with that. As far as the editing of the photo, I think I had the most fun, I got to edit a photo of Kanye West and make his image seem much more dark yet stand out. I was really happy with how i toned down all of the background and pinpointed him as the main attraction. I then highlighted all of the bright colors and brought all of the attention to that. My final piece of art was a portrait of a poem. And the poem was about happiness, so I envisioned a town full of happy people. I think that it came out looking exactly how I wanted it to. At the end of the quarter I am very happy with all of my final products and I am excited to learn more and more about Art and how to make the best product that I can

Quarter 2 Art

Posted by Esperanza Gonzalez in Art Advanced - Hull - a1 on Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at 3:01 pm

During this second quarter in Ms. Hull’s two day art class, everything went great. In this quarter we had to make the following pieces; an art collage, a hand drawn fabric drawing, a depth in field photograph, and a illustration based on a story.   All of the pieces were given 100% of my time and effort, which can clearly be seen through the work. I believe that this quarter has been my best yet. I loved making every single piece because I liked the variety. I also like trying new things, and this quarter was all about that.

My favorite piece from this quarter is definitely the hand drawn fabric I drew. It took me more time than any other piece, which is why I think it’s my favorite. I spent around 5 hours to draw this fabric, every time I didn’t like the way it looked I erased it and fixed it. While drawing this fabric I wanted to show the environment in which the fabric was in. I wanted it to be black and white because I wanted to capture a very old look. I didn’t want any other color on the fabric because it wouldn’t transmit what I wanted it to. When looking into this piece you can experience an old, rusty, but rich touch. I think that capturing the way I wanted it was very hard. Time was definitely on my side.

Quarter #2 Artwork

Posted by Kevin Courtney in Art Advanced - Hull - a1 on Monday, January 26, 2015 at 8:24 am

This quarter I feel that my artwork has improved since the first quarter. For example for one of the projects I had to take a photo and use this app called pixlr. It was tricky to use at first but then the finalization of the picture look wonderful! Like I said in the first quarter, anything you make can be art. Art can be powerful to anyone! For this Second quarter I had to make a collage by using pictures from magazines. Then make a fabric drawing by using pencil and charcoal. After that, I had to take a photo and use pixlr. Last but not least, pick a piece of writing and illustrate a passage. I'm happy how my art turned out to be this quarter, so please don't judge. Enjoy checking out my work.

Collage: For this project, I was allowed to make a collage of anything I wanted. I made my collage spell out the word art because why not? Its art class for crying out loud. So what I used in the collage was pictures from home/design magazines. I used those type of pictures from those magazines because most of them had patterns. Basically how I see art, I see a lot of patterns!

Fabric drawing: Now at first I was suppose to draw fabric on top of a stool, but I really wanted to do something else. So I used my sleeve on one of my SLA hoodies as an advantage to do something else. Now this was my first time using charcoal. I feel I did great using it for the first time. My favorite part of the drawing is the hand leading into the sleeve of the arm because to me it looks realistic.

Photo: On this project, I was aloud to take a photo of anything I wanted in the world. After taking that photo I had to use this app called pixlr. I chose to take a picture of food because food is amazing haha. Especially burgers because its my favorite food in the entire world. After experiencing pixlr and clearly showing one burger while the other was blurry, I seriously wanted to jump into that photo. It basically looks delicious!

Illustration: Finally, for this project, I had to pick any piece of writing and illustrate a passage. I picked "The Cat in the Hat" because that was children's book I grew up with when I was little. The book used to make me laugh a lot. On this day I'm not sure why it made me laugh, but I don't care now because its cool to draw something that was from your childhood.

Hope you enjoyed my artwork for quarter #2!

My Artist Statement:
During this quarter, I have learned a lot about my artwork. I know that a lot of the times, I stay in my own lane and never try to switch it up and make myself go through challenges. Well that is what I did this quarter. Espeacialy with the fabric drawing. When I first saw the tutorial, I thought, ok, this could be possible, but then I started to do the work and found myself in a lot of puddles. I thought that I could not do it, but with the help of my classmates and Ms. Hull, it was possible. I tried my best and made sure that I did not give up. Doing the collage was probably the most fun piece I did because it was not structured at all. It made me think of myself and once I did that it came all so freely.
If I could describe this quarter with one word, it would have to be challenging, but that is something you have to deal with as a striving student and artist. You must make sure that you are constantly breaking new boundaries. That is what I think can make someone grow. I think that is what made me grow, because my craft is way more sharper that even last quarter.

Canvas of George Washington

This is a canvas of George Washington after the Battle of Princeton. It was painted by none other than Charles Wilson Peale. In 1764, Charles gained a reputation for his art during the Revolutionary movement. He was very eager to bring his fame to Virginia, but the Governor sent him to go study more art under a fellow american with a studio in London. His patriotic passions were also heightened during those years. So he resolved to dedicate himself to helping to secure America's freedom.

This painting was very important because this was the time America was battling for their freedom. Peale had to keep a close eye on Washington in variety of situations. An example of that is when Washington conferred with the Congress in Philadelphia to discuss a war strategy for the future. Peale was painting the canvas of Washington while he was serving with the Continental Army. Basically he had a certain amount of hours to get it finished.

This canvas is related to any other pantings in art history. The reason is because canvases are painted in a variety of mediums. They all have different shades of colors. For example in the Peale's painting of Washington is in a brighter tone on the canvas while the background has a darker tone. That is common aspect in a canvas, which is the person having a lighter tone and the middle ground and background having darker tones to make the person stand out more. You need to have darker tones on the background because the first thing your eyes need to hit it the most important thing, which is the person who is being assembled.

There is a reason why I choose this exact piece of art. Its because I like American history. A common thing that comes up in my mind about American History is George Washington. I wanted to do research and find a specific piece of artwork of George Washington. This one Charles Wilson Peale painted is one of the common ones because remember this was the time Washington was leading the Continental Army.

Basically what I learned from this was that when a person is being painted on canvas they have to be in brighter colors to actually make your eyes catch them first before they start moving everywhere around the canvas. I also learned little history about Peale and how served and painted this exact canvas at the same time. Usually when anyone looks at art you need to know the certain aspects of it was created. Also the history of because every type of art has history to it!

Q1 Artwork

Posted by Antoinette Hiller in Art Advanced - Hull - a1 on Friday, November 14, 2014 at 11:36 pm

When it comes to art, I can see myself improving more and more. Even though it may me progressing slowly, the progression is still there. I do like that I am getting better at detail and other origins that make art what it is because when I enter college I do hope to involve myself into forensic art. What this is, is when a forensic chemist reconstructs a skull or creates some sort off face in order to solve a crime. SInce this is one of the things that I hope to do in college, I do want to maintain working on getting better and better at art, as well as learning it. Over all, my goal for each quarter is to constantly find something new that I'm working on to better progress myself. I know I can do it and I hope to get it done.

Artist Statement (also included in slideshow):
Its exciting coming into a class where you have a lot of freedom, a freedom to create something in your perspective. There are so many choices to choose from, there are so many ways the given task could be handled and it’s all up to you and thats the beauty in an art class. Throughout this class so far, several unique pieces have been produced. The first task we received was to create a drawing on a large ceiling tile. What we wanted to draw was up to us, so whatever our creative little mind could generate and agree on was our ceiling tile. In my process of this task, I was not quite sure what I wanted at first but as I started thinking more deeper and I came to the idea of integrating my country, culture and religion to my drawing. In our next task or my next piece, I decided to draw a snowflake. The earlier day, I was left in wonderment by some of the intricate pictures of snowflakes and so I came to my conclusion of drawing a snowflake with my own intricate design. In the pumpkin assignment, I wanted to draw again but I did not want it to be a plain drawing, so I decided to make it a puzzle pumpkin. Instead of using one sheet of paper to draw the whole pumpkin, I drew it on four pages and when you put the four pages together, you get one scary pumpkin. Our final piece was a self-portrait in any medium. Here, something different I tried out was taking one color and using it in different shades to create details. Altogether, the four pieces of art I created, I am very proud of it!

Artist Statement

I draw my pictures to express myself. I want people to know when they see what I draw, they see more than just a picture, but a story. I draw because it gives me something enjoyable to do. I make art because I can and I like it. Art is way for me to express my outlook on life, my mind and my ambitions. Art helps me also my likes.

Q1 Art Assignments

I find art to be a therapeutic way to release inner feelings through the various mediums.  I believe that art should be a statement of what you are passionate about. We are all unique individuals with diverse opinions, values and standards.  We are all unrepeatable and I express myself through my sketches and strokes.  Everything I made, I put a little bit of myself into it which helps me relieve stress and feel free to not on by anyone else’s standards.  My art is for me and nobody.  If I cannot be happy with my own individuality, I will not ever be happy.  Art is the perfect outlet to be free in your thoughts and turn them into visuals.
