Anthony Buchanico's Capstone

Posted by Anthony Buchanico in Capstone - Kay - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 11:05 pm

It's been around 6 years since I've started playing the guitar. In that tem I finished grade school, went through high school and have matured in so many ways. I wouldn't be the person I am today if I hadn't began playing the guitar I doubt I'd be half the man I am today. Throughout my guitar playing career I had a ton of support from friends and family telling me that I was doing great and that I was very talented. To be honest I never really believed them. When I did though it really helped me to become such a more confident and headstrong individual. I wanted to share that feeling with everybody through my knowledge and interest in music by making a booklet teaching others. I know that a lot of aspiring musicians often get discouraged when they hear a lot of different things about theory and music notation. I aimed to make my capstone simple to understand so that those beginners can get started on the right foot.

I started off with the basics of music theory, as well as how to tune a guitar and what common terms mean that musicians might here a lot. From there I went on to explain the different types of chords and how to read a tab. From there I talked about what songs to play and what would help people with their music career. I made sure to provide dozens of example songs of all difficulties to make sure anybody can try some songs from the booklet. I know that my booklet won't be able to teach everyone, but hopefully those that it can teach, it does them well.

Key Resources/Bibliography:

Comunity. "Guitar Lessons @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com." Guitar Lessons @ Ultimate-Guitar.Com. Ultimate-Guitar,Web.

The Ultimate-Guitar community is a vast one filled with hundreds of guitar players of various skill levels.  These guitarists speak together on a forum and share their tabs with one another for the benefit of the world. Ultimate Guitar also has a lessons section where anybody can upload a lesson on whatever they please. I’ve used this to my benefit by taking pieces of different lessons and incorporating them into my own booklet.

Guitar Tab Creator. Computer software. Welcome to Guitar Tab Creator Help Section. Guitartabcreator, Web.

A big part of teaching guitar is giving a way to read music. Tablature is debatably the easiest way to teach guitar without going too in depth about music theory. Making these tabs can be extremely tedious, but thanks to guitar tab creator the pain of making a tab has been reduced by a great amount. I used this a lot so far in making lessons and plan on using this for the rest of it since it’s such a great tool.

Abe’s Book.

Musselman, Abe. A Brief Introduction to Guitar. 1st ed. Vol. 1: Self, Print.

Abe Musselman’s book on teaching guitar was very similar to what I did for mine. I was able to go through his capstone and get a decent understanding of what I can do to make it better. Abe also had a ton of good examples and sources to use. I got the guitar tab creator from this capstone, as well as several terrific song examples that I could implement in my project. It’s also nice to have a source that isn’t a website, especially since I can speak to this person personally.

Hess, Tom. "How To Teach Beginner Guitar." How To Teach Beginner Guitar. Tom Hess Music Corporation, Web.

I need to know HOW to teach guitar to people before I can actually go about doing it in a lengthy way. Tom Hess has managed to put some good lessons and tips into this website which allows me to take a step in the right direction with writing my book.  This website also talks about common mistakes, which is very helpful for me!

Savage, Nate. "Intermediate Guitar Lessons." » Guitar Lessons -. Guitarlessons, Web.

This is a good website for choosing different parts of my intermediate section. It has such a large amount of things in it that I can use it’s amazing. It’s kind of like a tutorial on my own capstone in itself.

Cross, Dan. "Learning Guitar - Lesson One - Learning About the Parts of a Guitar."Learning Guitar - Lesson One - Learning About the Parts of a Guitar. About.com, Web.

I figured that it’d be very smart if I taught the people who are reading the book the different parts of the instrument, which they are playing. I also wanted to use the image on the site to show how the guitar is laid out.

Farris, Brandon. "Intermediate Guitar Songs." Intermediate Guitar Songs. FULL-SCORE-GUITAR-LESSONS, Web.

Having songs in my capstone is very important. They provide a terrific reference of real world application with what you’ve been learning. This website is terrific since it gives me dozens of songs at different skill levels! I can use some of these songs in my capstone, and I can also use them to think of other songs.

Wimer, Kevin. "Choosing a Guitar: Acoustic vs Electric." JamPlay.com. JamPlay, 24 Feb. 2007. Web.

An extremely important part of my capstone is separating the different guitars. These being acoustic and electric. Based on what you want to know about guitar you can read the different parts of my book to learn about which type of guitar you want to play.

Crow, Klaus. "16 Legendary Fingerpicking Patterns." Guitarhabits.com. WordPress, 16 Nov. 2010. Web.

In terms of acoustic guitar, finger picking is extremely important. A lot of professional acoustic guitarists are very dependant on it. It manages to keep a very fast sound, while at the same time sounding very nice and melodic. I figured that this would be an extremely important thing to put in to the acoustic portion of my capstone since it’s practically required making any progress in playing.

http://blog.learntoplaymusic.com/choosing-a-guitar-playing-style/

G, Peter. "Choosing a Guitar Playing Style." Learn to Play Music. Learn to Play Music, 2014. Web.

As with my last source, this site allows to teach several different aspects of playing guitar playing such as finger picking.  This one also teaches rhythm and lead guitar though!  These also can be relevant for teaching acoustic guitar, but it’s also extremely helpful for electric guitar, which you can find a lead/rhythm trade in almost any two-guitar band!

Maria Latorre Capstone

Posted by Maria-Carolina Latorre-Socas in Capstone - Kay - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 10:37 pm

Topic Summary:

My goal for this project was to be able to develop a course curriculum for Advance Chem. I also want to be able to understand the effect that a teacher puts into his or her curriculum. I decided to do Advance Chem. because I really love Chemistry. It’s one of my top courses that I would love to major in once I’m in college. I thought that this would give me insight into what a class structure would look like and what are the big points that a student needs to get out of the course. I didn’t know how hard this would have been because as a student we don’t really think of all the work that goes into making a successful curriculum that every student can understand. I didn’t think it would be easy but I also never thought it would be this hard.

Project Abstract:

The initial inspiration behind this project was that I really wanted to be able to say I did something that no one else has ever done. I wanted to be different one of a kind and that is what I got. I have always loved science and that was my second inspiration. I just never thought that this could be the hardest thing I could do. I had a hard time keeping up with my capstone, a healthy social life and good grades. Sometimes I would over work myself or stay up until late just to write up two or three labs; but all in all I think that this is great I was able to get things done. I also learned that a teacher life isn’t as easy as people may think.

Capstone Bibliography

Hall, James ed. Experimental Chemistry Seventh Edition. Boston Massachusetts: Hartford, 2007. Print.

This is a very good source, I really like this source because it has a lot of information and this information is really useful to my capstone. I the reason is very simple, in the book there are different types of work that can be done in class and that is very important to know. Like the “Idea Gas Law” this is one of the topics that I will be going over because for a Advance Chemistry class this something that everyone should know or should learn when taking this class. This source has short description about the topics that are written inside and then it gives you work that you can do and things that you can explain to the students. Also if I could understand what is happening in the book then the student might understand, too.

http://www.esciencelabs.com/files/product_pdfs/Chemistry_Version_4_Ideal_Gas_Law_Sample_Lab.pdf

I selected this source because it has background information that can support one of the many topics that I will be going over in my Capstone. This also has definitions that we can go over in my class curriculum. I feel like this will work out for me because I learned a lot and I think that this will be really cool and the information is very interesting. I hope that by using this source I will be able to put it together so that I can help the student get the general gizzest of what is happening in the class.

Janet L. Kolodner, Joseph S. Krajcik, Daniel C. Edelson, Brian J. Reiser, Mary L. Starr, eds. Project-Based Inquiry Science Living Together. New York: Jones, 2009. Print.

This is one of the sources that can be help with understanding and teaching. I think that it will be useful to my capstone because this has a lot of facts and information that a teacher should know and that they can teach the student. I think that this is something every important because it was able to teach me new things and if I’m learning something new then that means that maybe the others don’t know it too. This is just to reinforce what I know and what I can teach others for my capstone.

Myers R. Thomas, Tocci Salvatore, Oldham B. Keith, eds. Chemistry Teacher Edition. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, 2004. Print.

This resources is a book about advanced chemistry. It’s a manual that helps teachers teach students the principles of advanced chemistry. The book tells of different teaching techniques and the best way to execute them to students. This can be helpful due to the fact that I want students to learn something new. I think that this will help me see what a student know and what they don’t know. Since I’m a student I can tell because if I don’t know it then the other students might not know it.

"Next Generation Science Standards." Next Generation Science Standards. Next Generation Science Standards and the Associated Logo Are Registered Trademarks of Achieve, Inc., n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.nextgenscience.org/>.

This source is used to understand what a student at grade k-12 should learn in science class. I will be looking at the grade 6-12 because this is when chem comes into play. I think that this will be used a lot in my capstone because this can help me structur out a class that can work out. It shows the necessary basics to start of a class and also what they should know and learn. There is a lot of information you can get out of this website. You click on one of the topics and it shows you “Science and Engineering Practices”, “Disciplinary Core Ideas” and  “Crosscutting Concepts”. Once you clicked one of the topics it takes you to another website that give you useful information.

"Small-Scale Acid Rain Lab." YouTube. YouTube, 18 Dec. 2012. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Q6k822lSm4>.

This is a very useful youtube video. The reason for that is because it talks about a lab that I plan to have in my capstone, and it also has a teacher explaining how he would set up the project in his class. I think that this can be very useful because of that fact. This is a great way that I can compare with. Thus why I have it as a source. This also shows you about what you'll need for the lab. Like every chemical and what we are going to do with it. He also explains what had happen when the acid rain was around minerals and organisms .

"Support Materials." CEA Rewarding Learning. N.p., 2014. Web. 31 Jan. 2014. <http://www.rewardinglearning.org.uk/microsites/chemistry/revised_gce/support/>.

I found this source useful because it this one pdf source that I can used. It’s called Clarification of Terms in CCEA GCE Chemistry this can be very useful because it’s good to know terms; and I was planning to go over some terms that are explained in this pdf. I can also hand it to the students so that they have something that isn’t just google to find a definition for science words that they don’t know or do not remember.

Thompson, Robert Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments All Lab, No Lecture.: Alison Kendall ed. Sebastopol CA: Dale, 2008. Print.

When I reviewed this source I thought that it was reliable and a good source to look at. I was able to find a variety of labs that could work well for my capstone. I thought that it was very informative and had great process guids to do the lab. Though I might need to change some chemicals that they asked to use because we might not have them in school so we have to think of something that is close to being the same chemical. In all this is a very useful source that I plan to be using throughout my capstone.

"Understanding by Design Exchange by ASCD." Understanding by Design Exchange by ASCD. ASCD 69th Annual Conference & Exhibit Show, n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.ubdexchange.org/>.

I selected this source because of the information that it had provided. It helped me know what is needed to make a class. Like the basic understanding of the class what a student should know and what the plan is to make them better. I feel like this could help a lot because it helped me see that the teachers need a ending goal and also how to treat other students because some are slower than the others and sometime a student won’t ask for help so I would need to know when that is happening and also I have to be aware of the students reaction to the work. To make sure that they could learn and understand.

Wiggins, Grant. "Authentic Education - Welcome to Authentic Education." Authentic Education - Welcome to Authentic Education. Authentic Education, n.d. Web. 28 Jan. 2014. <http://www.authenticeducation.org/ae_bigideas/>.

This source will just be used to support the other sources that I have because this will only have information on how to make a class; and what is need to make this class.

Jamekea S. Lee Capstone

Posted by Jamekea Lee in Capstone - Kay - Wed on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 1:34 pm

Abstract

For my capstone I mentored young girls at my old middle school every Wednesday for eight weeks. Each week we discussed different topics such as, Social Media, Family and Friends, Violence, School, Society Views, and Self- Respect. As we had our discussion there was also assignments that the girl had to work on, which were all based on the topic of discussion. The goal of this capstone was to understand how young girls think, how the react, and what influence their actions. Each of the young girls had a journal which they wrote in just about every week about how they was feeling and I responded back to them each week. Through the course of the program I learned so much about these girls. I went in expecting them to be distanced and unwilling to work but they were open and allowed me to get personal. I learned that some young girls only need for someone to take the time out of their day and just listen, listen to their feelings and thoughts, knowing that they wouldn’t be judge. They made me realize that no matter what age you are, you’re still vulnerable and want people to be there for you, no matter how strong you are. This was a learning experience for not only the girls but for me.

I chose to use this online book as a source because I think it’ll be a interesting read and it would help with my capstone. The book is about Black Racial Identity and the perceptions of it, I think it would be interesting to “learn” in a way about how blacks are looked at in society. If I learn more about how blacks are looked at in society, then I can teach the girls and tell them why it’s important to have a good character so society can have more respect for themselves. I’ll incorporate my findings into my work.

"Community Violence: The Effects on Children." The Child Study Center. NYU Langone Medical Center. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.aboutourkids.org/articles/community_violence_effects_children>.

This source is reliable because it breaks down how the community a child lives in can play a part in their behavior. If a child grows up in a bad neighborhood, then they will have bad tendencies because they don’t necessarily have the right role models to follow. I can like at this source as a what-not-to-do, and try to be a good role model for the girls I’m teaching. This source isn’t the go to source for everything though, I wouldn’t use this as what-to-do source but I’ll definitely use this as a fallback source.

DuRant, Robert, Chris Cadenhead, Robert Pendergrast, Greg Slavens, and Charles Linder. Factors Associated with the Use of Violence among Urban Black Adolescents. 84. 1994. <http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1614778/pdf/amjph00455-0086.pdf>.

I chose to use this source because it was a study to examine social and psychological factors associated with black adolescence. This sources relates to my capstone because I’m studying why black adolescent girls have little respect for themselves. This source states how community played a role in their decisions, I also think that community plays a role in the way black girls choose to represent themselves to the world. This source is very reliable and helpful for my capstone. I’ll use this source as the basis of my curriculum and to help plan out my activities for my capstone.

Galbreath, Lydia. Philosophy of the African American Identity Crisis: A Double Consciousness Exploration (2011): n.pag. Web. 30 Jan 2014. <http://urpasheville.org/proceedings/ncur2011/papers/NP50231.pdf>.

I chose to use this as a source because it’s about black racial identity which will help with my capstone. This source looks thoroughly into the Double Consciousness Theory and the role it plays in the African American lives. I found this source very reliable because it’s study and an overview of the African American culture and their lives. It’s a good source about the black society and how it’s viewed by people from other ethnicities, which will help me explain my reasoning for my capstone to the kids. It will help a lot with my curriculum and what I’m trying to do with my capstone.

Khattri, Nidhi, Kevin W. Riley, and Michael B. Kane.Students At Risk in Poor, Rural Areas: A Review ofthe Research. Pelavin Research Institute. 13, No.2. Journal of Research in Rural Education, 79-100. Web. <http://www.jrre.psu.edu/articles/v13,n2,p79-100,Khattri.pdf>.

This source is very reliable because it’s a online excerpt from a book published by people affiliated with Pelvain Research Institution. The book is about students who may be at risk in poor, rural areas which relates to my capstone because I’m working at a middle school in North Philly which is in a rural neighborhood. I can use the information I get from this source and feed it to my audience. I can teach about the risk they are at and how to prevent falling into traps of living in such a community. This source will help me spread information about how much community influences an individual behaviors.

"Middle School Survival." Understanding and Raising Girls. PBSParents. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <https://www.pbs.org/parents/raisinggirls/friends/mid1.html>.

I chose to use this source as a reference because it about middle school girls behavior. This source breaks down why some middle school girls act out in school and why their behavior may be bad. This source is a great start for me understanding the minds of middle school girl, while it may not be the best thing when trying to fully understand middle school girls, it is a good starting point. I can reflect on this site when I feel as though I’m having a hard time with the girls, this source will give me understanding of what’s going on.

"Parenting, the Social Environment and its Effects on Child Development." Virtual Medical Centre. Virtual Medical Centre, n.d. Web. 31 Jan 2014. <http://www.myvmc.com/lifestyles/parenting-the-social-environment-and-its-effects-on-child-development/>.

I think this source is reliable because it breaks down everything about parenting and social environmental effects on child development. My capstone was originally about how parents and the environment plays a major role in a child’s life but I changed it around a bit because I thought it was too broad and would cause a lot of problems. However, I will touch on the topic in a more settle and discreet way, so this source is good for me to pull information from. This source is also reliable for me to reflect on and even show the girls so they can look at it too.

Popkin, Susan J., Tama Leventhal, and Gretchen Weismann. Girls in the 'Hood: How Safety Affects the Life Chances of Low-Income Girls. Urban Affairs Review, Web. <http://www.dedoose.com/PDF/Publications/Popkin, Leventhal, Weismann_2010_Girls in the Hood.pdf>.

I chose to use this source because it relates a lot to my capstone. For my capstone I’m talking to 6th grade girls about self respect. Rather me taking up eight weeks to talk just about self respect, I want to give them facts about more things. Such as how society views them and what messages they’re sending out to society. I want to show the girls the long term effect of the choices they are making at such a young age. By referencing this site, I’ll be able to show them the work of people who actually study these sorts of things and that will helpfully help them understand more.

Stack, Carol. All Our Kin: Strategies for Survival in a Black Community. New York: Basic Books, A Member of the Perseus Books Group, 1997. 22-57. Web. <http://books.google.com/books?hl=en&lr=&id=kDarMIro39YC&oi=fnd&pg=PR7&dq=black+adolescent+community&ots=K_7thnXl7V&sig=qv2s3ClE3Iifbot23Bu1BOqHNxU#v=onepage&q=black%20adolescent%20community&f=false

This source is very reliable for my capstone because within the book it has chapters about black communities and how they play a major role in black adolescents lives. I thought the chapters within the book were helpful in helping me understand more about the black community. Even though I’m from a black community, it’s good to have another insight about it from other people.  This source will be very reliable for getting information that I’ll need to complete my capstone and to help others understand my capstone. I’ll not only give people of different ethnicity a view of the black community but it will give African Americans a view of the black community.

"Youth in Action: Teens Forming Teens." What Kids Can Do. What Can Kids Do, Inc. Web. 29 Jan 2014. <http://www.whatkidscando.org/featurestories/2008/08_youth_in_action/index.html>.

When I reviewed this site I was looking to find articles about young black adolescence and their behavior. However, I was surprised when I seen a featured story about teens helping teens because it relates a lot to my capstone. This article helped me understand how to approach my audience in a more fun and interesting way rather than just laying facts out to them. It inspired me to make activities where they’ll teach me about their experiences and the reasons for the decisions they make. Although this source isn’t reliable for my whole capstone it is a good starting point for the activities I’m going to make.
