For my capstone, it was important for me to work with children. I originally wanted to volunteer at St. Christopher’s Hospital and do storytelling with the children, as well as creating a book. However, there were a few complications with that idea so my mentor, Ms. Giknis and I, were brainstorming of other places I could possibly volunteer at while still doing something similar to what I wanted to do. We eventually saw that Ronald McDonald House offers opportunities for volunteers, most times high schoolers, to create arts and crafts or play some kids who are long-term ill. My main goal for this capstone was to give children who are ill, the opportunity to “play” or “live” like a normal child would. These children are constantly in and out of the hospital, some even only knowing what a hospital room looks like. Most of the research towards this project was just looking up ways to approach children who are ill and even families of the children. A lot of it was also finding fun arts and crafts for them to do.
My capstone is a combination of a lot of things. I had many discussions leading up into a sort of "grand finale" discussion. These included sit downs with teachers, sit downs with students, and sit downs with some of the most politically inclined people that I could find in my own life. Everyday I went out and seeked to close the gap in between myself and the world of politics, while, sometimes annoyingly, educating my peers. The last discussion took the form of a presentation to all of my classmates in my block for my history class, which was mostly a success, outside of a few minor things. To give it a place to live, I gave it a website, which I got the idea to also equip with a specialized central for people, who may not be so informed, to slowly be able to catch up in their understanding, which I was very careful with putting together. The name was made up as if to be an official news outlet, and is, in part, a reincarnation of an early version of this idea of raising awareness for politics that I had. This was a very fun project, would do again. http://ggurunews.weebly.com/ Annotated Bibliography https://www.census.gov/population/socdemo/voting/SB91-23.pdf "The Decline in American Voter Turnout." My capstone is a collection of stories that I have created. There are many types of stories in here, a lot of them are very action packed. Some of them don’t have those action themes though. These are stories that I have written both recently and in the past. The process for writing these stories was very deep. I would think for a very long time about the perfect characters and the perfect stories to write. I would sit down brainstorming, and then I would try to come up with something entertaining. After coming up with the story, I would look it over, and then I’d get it peer edited. When it came to my old stories, I had to do some really careful thinking when it came to which old ones I would add to the collecting. This capstone made me a better writer, and taught me how to really make my stories better crafted. So I made sure that I put my all into every story, and made sure that my collection would be one of value. And the final product is the story being posted on an online website.
Excerpt from one of the stories
Today is the day that I fight a man known as The Destroyer. He is known to break bones and spill blood. I think he’s pussy even though he seems tough. I want to beat the shit out of this little fucker. When I arrive to the parking lot in that Range Rover, there is a crowd in a circle. The Destroyer is there ready to fight. I walk over to him, and give him the death stare.
“I will crush you and eat you for breakfast. Do you know who you're facing?”, said The Destroyer.
“I see a wet pussy waiting to get fucked”, is what I said back to him. The crowed cheered. That’s when he punched me.
“How about now? Am I still a pussy?”, said The Destroyer. Someone in the crowd throws a steel pipe into the circle. I pick it up and start hitting him in the head as hard as I can. His face is super bloody. I then pick him to the ground, and stomp on his throat. He starts spraying blood out of his mouth like a goddamn water hose. I drag this little cocksucker to the wall, and bash his fucking brains in. After that, I hear a ton of cheers. I won the fight, and my name was being chanted. I smile, and then I go backstage. It is a hall where people are celebrating. They are drinking, smoking weed and popping pills, and some of them are getting blowjobs. This is the environment I’m around since I hang around the savages. But, I gave up drugs for my kid. I used to do all sorts of drugs, and I cheated on my wife constantly, but my son changed that. So when some woman offers to smash, I ask her to go fuck one of my friends instead. I decide to drink a beer, but only one beer. Venbro, one of my close friends, decided to come over. He’s dressed like a pimp.
“Hey Broko, you was really whoopin ass out there bro!”, is what he said after taking a hit of his blunt
“Yeah, I put it all out there. There pussies ain’t got shit on me.”, is what I said.
“They don’t, but do you ever think it will be time to retire?”, is what Broko asked. That question took me back a little.
“What the fuck do you ask? I love this shit bro!”, is what I said
“Yeah, but does your son know what you do? Does he know you hang around criminals and drugs users, and does he know that you could die any moment in this job?”, is what Broko said to me. He did have a point. My son does not know about the shit I do daily, or how I have all this money. He doesn't know that I’ve killed people, that my friends are psychopaths.
“I want him to be able to look up to his dad. I don’t want his teachers to look at me in disgust, but I love fighting. I just love to throw hands”. We continued to discuss this, and I am considering retirement soon.

This source is reliable due to the insight it gives on storytelling. It gives a bunch of detail about what it takes to make a good story. I really feel that it can help me with story telling, because I’m not doing something that requires actual research, but advice on how to write is very good. The give some keys to writing good stories. It takes advice from actual authors, and it puts them in the article. It is very legitimate for what it’s purpose is, and that is how to write a story and make it good. I think that this source will increase the quality of my stories.
"What makes a good story?" American Press Institute. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017. <https://www.americanpressinstitute.org/journalism-essentials/makes-good-story/>.
This one is about journalism, and not fiction. I thought that it would be useless at first, but then I saw things that could potentially help me. It has a section about interesting topics. They describe the value of topics, which is very good for me. Interesting topics are needed for a good piece of fiction, so it still has things that I can learn about. Journalists still have to write interesting things, even though they may be nonfiction. They still have to catch the reader’s interest and put out quality material. This source can also help me for if I want to right a realistic story, so this will heavily aid me.

I love how this one has strong writing strategies. It gives advice that a writer should use, like how it tells you to keep a notebook. You can tell that it is legitimate because of the edu at the end. It is very professional, and it gives knowledge to the writer. I can use them to help create stronger characters. It gives 9 story elements to consider so that you can have a good plot. It is very descriptive and helpful, and it has so much knowledge from a writer’s standpoint. It also has 9 entire sections full of advice for how to write.

This may not be as reliable as the ones with edu, but it still has some jewels. It talks about cliches to avoid and how to be interesting. It’s clear that this author has experience with what he is doing, as he tries to really break everything down. He gets into what a plot specifically is an how to make one, which is very helpful. The concept of conflict is touched upon, which is something that all good stories need. To have that touches upon will help me come up with juicy situations for the stories. I never knew that happiness can be overrated for stories, and this source taught me that. That’s why it will be useful.

This website is made by an educated professional who knows what she is doing, and she has came up with some exercises that can really help me put out a good product. They do things that are known to be good. She lays it all put, and really puts out some good exercises about what you can do to make a good story. This will give me some really good help that will really make the project go so much better. I can really use this so that my stories actually have a nice natural improvement to them, and a great quality.
"Character Development." Ohio.edu. N.p., n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017.
<http://www.ohio.edu/people/hartleyg/ref/fiction/character2.html>
It has a really nice section about how to create characters, as many other sources do. You can never get enough advice when it comes to that. This is for how to right a play, but many of the same rules probably apply for short stories as well. Many plays and movies are based off of novels, so I really think having that voice will be very helpful for me to make a great product. They also talk about ways to let the audience know how a character is. The section is called Direct vs Indirect characterization, which was very insightful.
Bradbury, Ray. Zen in the art of writing. Santa Barbara, CA: Joshua Odell Editions, 1990. Print.
This is a book about being a writer and it gives advice about writing and what specifically inspires this particular. I like how the author describes his favorite authors, and talked about the fact that writing made both them, and himself, happy. This author seems to have quite a lot of knowledge to give about the topic of writing. He also described how real life events and emotions can really help out the process of making a story. I like how he advises to come up with a character similar to one’s self. The advice and jewels in the book are fascinating, and I think that they would be very helpful.
Lamott, Anne. Bird by bird: some instructions on writing and life. New York: Anchor , 1995. Print.
This is a very popular book from a very famous author. This book will let me know what it really is like to be an author. Not only that, they talk about first drafts and their importance, and that is good for me as an author. I want to make my stories perfect, and knowing how to make a first draft and improve it is very important for me to understand as a a writer. They also have a whole section about letting somebody read that draft. I like the advice that is in this book, and I think it can help me grow as a writer.
Strunk, William, and E. B. White. The elements of style. New York: Macmillan, 1979. Print.
This book has quite a lot of advice for a writer. This book talks about how to use language and make sentences. It is very specific and really focuses on wanting one to make very good sentences. I recognize that as a writer, I need good sentence structure and dialogue. This is why I feel that this will be a very helpful source for me. They give advice such as not splitting sentences into 2. I feel that this book will be very helpful to me when I write my storybook collection. Because of the multiple sections and the detail and information given, I think that this would be a wonderful source.
Zinsser, William. On writing well: an informal guide to writing nonfiction. New York: Harper and Row, 1980. Print.
This is a very popular book about being a writer and an author, and it is very long. By looking at the titles of the chapters, you can tell hat you are in for a lot of knowledge. It talks about how even though a lot of story is very driven by the author’s emotions, the author still has to sit down and reflect on how to make a good piece of literature. There is a lot that goes into writing, and the book tries to show that. There is also advice in the book on how simple you should keep the story and sentences, which will also be helpful. This source will most likely enhance my writing skills.
For my capstone, I wanted to do something that meant a lot to me. Ever since the fifth grade, I have played on the volleyball team and it is one of my many passions. Because volleyball means so much to me, I decided to share it with others and those that may be interested in playing. As a novice player, I understand that it is sometimes difficult to grasp the dynamics of the game, how to condition pre season, proper attire, and even how to prevent and treat injuries. That is why I decided to create a “How To” guide book specifically for volleyball. My goal is to help new volleyball players understand the basics of the sport and hopefully drive their passion for the game just like mine. This capstone was a great learning experience for me. Most of the information in my book are things that I wish I had known before I started playing. I am glad that by creating this book, I am giving other people the opportunity that I did not have. I have never done a project like this before and it pushed me to step out of my comfort zone and take on things that I most likely, wouldn’t have.

Volleytastic. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017.
http://www.volleytastic.com/about-volleyball/history-of-indoor-volleyball/
I selected this source because I think it is important for people to know the history of volleyball. I think that this is important so that people will know why the sport is so popular. This website also provides informational timeline on the growth of volleyball and how it spread to different countries. Knowing the history of a sport can help curious players the risks of the sport, the difficulty level, and who/what originated the complexity of the sport.
Volleytastic. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017.
http://www.volleytastic.com/playing-volleyball/volleyball-injuries-and-prevention/
This source is essential to my project because it provides information on injuries and different ways to prevent them. The reason I have multiple sources on injury prevention is because it I think that is important for beginners to know and fully understand the risks that they are posing to there bodies and also what to know if said risks occur. It is important for every athlete, not just volleyball players, to learn how to take care of their body both during and after a sport. Stretching, icing, massaging, etc. are just a few ways to keep one’s body in good condition and this site explains other ways as well.
"Differences Between Indoor and Outdoor Volleyballs." Real Volleyball. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017.
http://www.realvolleyball.com/blog/differences-between-indoor-and-outdoor-volleyballs/
I found this source useful because I do not think that most people know the difference between indoor and outdoor volleyball. Also, a lot of people who play volleyball play both indoor and outdoor. It is important to know the difference between the two because although one may know how to play indoor, they may not know how to play outdoor. The rules and regulations for both differ from each other in both major and minor ways. Because of the difference in rules, it may prevent some from playing. Also, outdoor (beach) volleyball is generally more difficult to play than indoor volleyball.
Hebert, Mike. Thinking volleyball. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics, 2014. Print.
There are many people whose first thought is that volleyball is so easy and that there isn’t much to it, which is why I found this book to be very useful. It breaks down the mental capacity and strength needed to play volleyball. This source is essential because most people do not understand that there is more to the game of volleyball than just serving, passing, and hitting. The game requires mental determination and the ability to understand multiple plays, defensive skills, offensive skills, etc. Without this understanding of the mental aspect of the game, some people may find it harder than others to excel in this sport.
"How to Play Volleyball | Learning Skills and Rules." Volleyball Advisors. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017.
http://www.volleyballadvisors.com/how-to-play-volleyball.htm
This source provides information on the “how to” basics of volleyball. The article goes into detail about the game as whole but more specifically the physical and mental aspect of playing the game. This source, although too detailed for exactly what I need, I can still use the basic information in order to construct step by step rules on the game. Instead of completely dismissing the additional information given within the article, I can use it to provide and even more detailed and advanced explanation.
Kenny, Bonnie, and Cindy Gregory. Volleyball: steps to success. Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics, 2006. Print.
I selected this book because I think it helps beginners understand the major steps in order to be successful while playing volleyball. Although, this source is so detailed to the point where it can also teach people that have been playing volleyball for a very long time. This source is not just geared towards beginners but it will help be in laying out the basic steps to success for those who do not know anything about volleyball. This source is extremely informative and also describes how one can better specific skills used in volleyball. With this source I can inform people of the steps that they need to take and the drills that they can do in order to become a better player.
"Preventing Volleyball Injuries." Volleyball Injuries | Volleyball Injury Prevention & Treatment. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017.
http://www.stopsportsinjuries.org/STOP/Prevent_Injuries/Volleyball_Injury_Prevention.aspx
Initially, I did not think that this website would help with my capstone project because I figured that it would be basic information on common volleyball injuries. I was in fact proven wrong when I reviewed the source because it provided in extreme detail multiple injuries caused by playing volleyball and also gave the types of injury prevention exercises specific to each injury. This source is beneficial to me because it is a major section in the Volleyball Guide 101 book that I am making and the information provided within this article will fit perfectly in the book.
"Safety Tips: Volleyball." KidsHealth. The Nemours Foundation, n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017.
http://kidshealth.org/en/teens/safety-volleyball.html?WT.ac=ctg
I selected this source because it provided information about safety tips of volleyball and the accessories needed to remain safe while playing the game. Although, this source does not go into in depth detail, it still allows me to use the information for my project so that I can information students on the required and optional materials used for the sport. Some of the materials are used to better one’s performance and others may be used for personal preference. I will specifically use this source for the information that I present in my “how to” book for my final project.
"Volleyball Shoes – The Right Pair Makes A World of Difference." Volleyball Shoes Make All The Difference. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017.
http://www.volleyball-training-ground.com/volleyball-shoes.html
Although short in content, I find this sourced to be very useful. Most people who are beginners to the sport do not understand how essential it is to have the right footwear while playing. Regular tennis shoes are acceptable, but for better performance, specific court shoes should be worn. Court shoes generally have a rubber sole so that individuals can move quickly and also stop abruptly without slipping and sliding on the court. Also, the website provides details on how to determine when to get new court shoes and the reason behind taking care of said athletic wear.

At first, I was not going to add information to my capstone about pre-season and off- season workouts, but after reviewing this source, I feel like this is a necessary element to add. The reason this source is so important is because in order to play not just volleyball but any sport, one needs to be in good physical condition and healthy both during and after the season. Working out before the season enhances the ability of better performance and strength during season and off season workouts maintains the balance of health with the abrupt halt of activity.
Writing music is hard, and writing good music is even harder. These were the two main thoughts that ran through my mind while completing my Capstone. My original project idea was to write a full album, but as time went on and I evolved as an artist, I noticed not all of my music was inspired by the same ideas. There was no central theme between songs and I did not feel right about producing a bunch of music just to reach the count needed for a full album. So out of the 10 songs I have written, I took the 4 most recent and made them into an EP, and I cannot say how happy I am with my decision to do so.
I learned a lot in the process of making this EP. The main takeaways I gathered were that collaboration is key, time management is huge, and preparing for failure is a must. Throughout the school year I learned so much about who I wanted to be as an independent artist, but really I learned the most while actually recording my songs. After 2 failed attempts, I was finally able to record my music much later than I anticipated. Due to time constraints I was unable to perfect my vocal recordings as much as I would have liked to, but nonetheless I am proud of what I have done.

This is a two hour long talk that I watched in chunks to learn every little detail about The Headshot (professional portrait style photograph). This style of photo comprises the bulk of my paid work, so watching this in depth talk by one of the most successful headshot photographers working today was a treat. I got to apply a lot of this knowledge in some of my earlier photoshoots, and cannot stress enough how much this talk has helped me reflect on my own shoots, as well as teach me things independently of my own experiences.

This book was an inspiration. It’s a compilation of cinematic shots and movement. The book is a fascinating translation from the cinema to the page. It’s also a really in depth lesson, and takes me from basic cinematography to something more advanced and applicable.

It’s hard to pick a favorite video essay from the channel “Nerdwriter1” but I can try. This video in particular is on Hitchcock blocking a scene. The entire channel is a goldmine when it comes to video essay content and production. There’s a focus on film, but there are also video essays on politics, literature, and other forms of art. I use this channel as a resource but also an inspiration when making my own video essays.
No Country For Old Men. Dir. Coen Brothers. Perf. Josh Brolin, Javier Bardem, and Tommy Lee Jones. Paramount, 2007. Online.
This film is another inspiration. I think, personally, that it might be the perfect film. It uses clinical camerawork and reserved close ups and movement to hold the audience at the edge of their seat. I aspire to make something this great someday.

This is another video/talk/guide from the same photographer who talked about headshots, Peter Hurley. This one is about lighting the face on location, something I have had to do on every single photo or video project, either paid or for school or for fun, and a skill I am learning to master. As a cinematographer and photographer, lighting is one of the most powerful tools in my toolbelt, and I can use lighting of the face to enhance the talent on screen. This video taught me a lot of what I know about lighting the face, and ever since I watched it about a year ago I have put an effort into lighting every single production I take apart in.
Pyter, Mariya, David Greenberg, and Andrew Karasik. "Panel Discussion #3 (Making a Feature)." Rough Cut Film Festival. Philadelphia, PA. 19 June 2016. Lecture.
This panel discussion was centered around the viewing of and discussion about a feature called “Stomping Ground.” The movie was produced in a single day with a shoestring budget (if any budget at all) and was proof to the audience of the lecture that a feature film was attainable. It has been a very informative and influential experience, and while I don’t aspire to create a film like “Stomping Ground,” I learned more from that panel discussion than I have in entire weeks of lecture in other classes.
Pyter, Mariya, Pascal, and Douglas Herman. "Workshop #2 (Directing)." Rough Cut Film Festival. Philadelphia, PA. 18 June 2016. Lecture.
This workshop has been the richest two hours of film experience I have had so far in my career. It was centered around the production of a sample short film, and was guided by a professional Director and a professional Cinematographer. Every attendee at the workshop was filling some required role in the production of the film, and I was AC, or Assistant Camera. The preceding workshop centered on Cinematographer, and these two combined are still my favorite experience in learning filmmaking that I have ever had.

As I enter the trade being specifically a cinematographer, I have had to form my own opinions on cinematography as an art form, and what constitutes good or correct cinematography. This video essay which I saw only recently put a lot of my floating ideas into words, and helped me consolidate some thoughts to come up with a thesis of sorts. This video essay proposes that “good” cinematography and “practical” cinematography are two different things; good is showy and flashy, and practical helps tell the story. Ideally you have some of both, and ideally all of your good is practical and most of your practical is good. I used the ideas behind this video essay to teach a rough cut workshop during EduCon.

This video essay centers on editing, and specifically cuts and transitions. This, along with another video essay on the same topic (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Q3eITC01Fg), has helped formed by opinions on editing. It has created a base for a lot of what I hold to be true, and when communicating with other editors or teaching others editing, I use pieces and quotes from these two videos.
Spencer, Jamie. "How To Make A Website - A Simple Guide For 2017." Make A Website Hub. N.p., n.d. Web. 01 Feb. 2017.
This website is created by Jamie Spencer, a website creator since the birth of the internet. Although I have been using this and will continue to use this as a website creation guide, there are a lot of branches to different incredible resources (slashed prices on website creators and domain names, tips and tricks on the marketing rather than just the website creation, and much more).
This will be my main resource when building (and maintaining) my website. It is a very simple step by step guide, but it’s more than just a recipe. Rather than just telling me what to click on to get a fine website, it’s teaching me about the craft and helping me understand how to make a better website. It’s the perfect blend between a guide for a beginner like myself and an in depth lesson for someone who wants to learn.

For my Capstone, I did workshops at my old school, A. B. Day Elementary School. I worked with kids in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. In the process of completing my capstone, It included weeks of research, planning, and communication. I did research on the learning styles of each grade group. I also researched what things they were interested in, so I knew what topic I would do for each workshop, and ideas for icebreakers to do before the workshop. With planning, in my calendar, I marked the topics of each workshop in each day, and the class room number that I would visit. I did workshops like high school expectations for 8th graders, and music for 6th graders. Communication was a thing that was a challenge with my capstone. The principal and vice principal of A. B. Day were very busy, and they had trouble replying back to my emails about what days I would go in. Overall, I had fun doing my capstone. One thing that I learned is how to handle kids that misbehave. One of the 8th grade classes that I visited, was full of kids that were really bad, and I was able to do calm them down and get them to talk. It seem like the deeper I got into the lesson the more kids became involved, especially when I took the time to share new experiences and stories. I believe Here is a link of some pictures of the high school expectations workshop with both of the 8th grade classes. https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1osiob9ChIex9DjEH70YYioLE4kFMEgJyoqDzm-uJc8M/edit#slide=id.p Bibliography: PBS. For my capstone, I created a website for the Hyrtl Skull Exhibit at the Mutter Museum. There are one-hundred-thirty-nine skulls in the collection, and Hyrtl took very detailed notes on all of them, beyond occupation or age or cause of death. He looked at where the skulls were from and the shape of them. This collection was amassed to disprove the theory of phrenology, which is the idea that you can determine a person’s intelligence based on the size and shape of their cranium. This idea was used to support slavery and white supremacy. I first did research on Dr. Hyrtl and then I started to catalogue the data that I was given. This is what took my the longest, as there are one-hundred-thirty-nine skulls and the data was not organized in a way that you could draw conclusions from it. I created a 20 page table with nine columns that summarized all of the data. From there I found statistics like average age, sex ratio, and causes of death. Once that was done, I took all of my data and put it into my website. I also shared this chart with the Mutter, so they have a better idea of what their collection looks like.
Bank, Andrew. "Of 'Native Skulls' and 'Noble Caucasians': Phrenology in Colonial South Africa." Journal of Southern African Studies 22.3 (1996): 387-403. Web. 3 Feb. 2017. This article talks about one of the most common uses for phrenology. Because phrenology came to rise around the same time as mass colonialism and nationalism did, it became common to justify the colonialism and mistreatment of native peoples and their land using phrenology. It is common to see terms used like “alien race” or “inferior race” when colonizers were talking about the people they colonized. These terms are a result of phrenology saying that Causians are the superior race, and all others are less advanced. This source looks a South Africa specifically, as the results phrenology and colonialism there still have lasting effects on the population.
Dhody, Anna, comp. Hyrtl Skull Exhibit. 1874. Exhibit at the Mutter Museum. The Mutter Museum at the College of Physcians, Phildadelphia. This source is my raw data for the project. These 139 skulls were collected by Dr. Josef Hyrtl throughout the course of his life. In 1874, they were bought by the Mütter Museum at the College of Physicians. On each of the skulls is a short description of the person to whom the skull belonged, which may include a name, occupation, sex, age, religion, place of origin, cause of death, and a description of the skull, among other things. One downside to this source is the fact that I am working with translations, as the original descriptions were written in German. However, they were translated by a professional, and there are not many words that could get confused in translation.
Ilacqua, Joan, comp. Talking Heads. N.d. Exhibit. The Francis A. Countway Library of Medicine, Boston. This collection is about Phrenology and the history of studying skulls. It discusses four men, Franz Gall, Johann Gaspar Spurzheim, and the Flower brothers, who contributed to the concepts and ideas of phrenology. This source also provides a very good definition for phrenology and why it was so popular. It also expands on what phrenology is involved with now, as it has been separated from the science that it was originally associated with. While Keckeisen addressed the root of phrenology, this source expanded on what was already given. It also explained what happened to phrenology after Gall created and shared his ideas about the shape of the skull and brain and how they relate to different attributes of different people.
Jahoda, Gustav. "Intra-European Racism in NineteenthâCentury Anthropology." History and Anthropology 20.1 (2009): 37-56. Web. This source talks about how phrenology and craniology, a precursor to phrenology, were used by early anthropologists to create different sub-groups within various races, especially causians. This practice was mostly used to prove that northern, WASP (white, anglo-saxon, protestant) Europeans were superior to all other. That would mean a German or Frenchman would be superior to a Greek or Italian, but all of them were superior to the rest of the people from the world. This source gives a lot of context for the information that is on the skulls, especially in concern to why religion was only noted sometimes and where each person was said to have come from.
Jenkins, Bill. "Phrenology, Heredity and Progress in George Combe's Constitution of Man." The British Journal for the History of Science 48.03 (2015): 455-73. Web. This source focuses more on the scientific ideas of phrenology and on one of the most important books on phrenology ever written, George Combe’s Constitution of Man. This book was published in 1828 and maintained its relevance and importance throughout the second half of the century. I was concerned that this source would not provide me enough information about the ideas of phrenology itself, but it explained the ideas of phrenology very well, as well as explaining why this book was so important. This source did focus solely on George Combe’s research, but because of the time period in which he lived, his research would have been very influential on Hyrtl’s own research and what data he collected while he was studying his skull collection.
Keckeisen, Sara K. "The Grinning Wall: History, Exhibition, and Application of the Hyrtl Skull Collection at the Mutter Museum." Thesis. Thesis / Dissertation ETD, 2012. Theses. Senton Hall University. Web. 2 Feb. 2017. This source is an analysis of the Hyrtl Skull Exhibit at the Mutter Museum and the ethics and methods of displaying an exhibit such as this. I was concerned that this source would focus too much on how the exhibit was displayed and whether or not displaying an exhibit like this is ethical, especially because the Museum did not obtain consent from the decedent. However, it provided very good information about the history of studying the skull, phrenology, and why Hyrtl collected the skulls on pages four through thirteen. Overall, the majority of the source was somewhat useful, however the pages noted above gave clearer answers to my questions about the history of phrenology than any of my other sources.
Lewis, Jason E., David Degusta, Marc R. Meyer, Janet M. Monge, Alan E. Mann, and Ralph L. Holloway. "The Mismeasure of Science: Stephen Jay Gould versus Samuel George Morton on Skulls and Bias." PLoS Biology 9.6 (2011): n. pag. Web. 3 Feb. 2017. This source focuses on one of the many obvious scientific problems with Phrenology, which is the fact that much of the data used to uphold this “science” was manipulated, misreported, and selected to fit the researcher's’ preconceived notions about humanity and where they stood in regards to other races. This source looks at Stephen Gould’s work about Samuel George Morton’s work. Gould took Morton’s work as a case study for the manipulation of evidence and data to support your own conclusions in the scientific community. It would have been better to look at Gould’s work first hand, but there was no easy or free way to access that in the time period I had.
Morton, Samuel George. "The Debate Over Slavery." Exploring U.S. History | the Debate over Slavery. Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media, n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017. This source is a series of excerpts from Samuel George Morton’s book Crania Americana. Morton lived around the same time as Hyrtl and collected a similar number of skulls. However, Morton collected his skulls to try to prove phrenology, or, as he called it, craniology. Morton’s collection is currently on display at the Penn Museum and is often compared to Hyrtl’s collection. These excerpts described his ranking of the different human races and their intelligence in regards to skull capacity. The one downside to this source is that the excerpts have been edited from the original text. However, Morton’s meaning and intention are still clear.
Wells, Samuel R. How to Read Character: A New Illustrated Hand-book of Phrenology and Physiognomy for Students and Examiners; with a Descriptive Chart. New York: Samuel R. Wells, 1870. Print. This source is a book on phrenology from 1869. It was designed to be a how-to guide for phrenology, including descriptions of the different races, what the average skull for each race looked like and how it measured, and what each of the those measurements “meant” in terms of intelligence, character, and attitude. It also talked about which parts of the brain, and therefore the skull, affect different parts of people’s characters. I was unable to read the entire book, so I am most likely missing some information, but I read all of the sections that addressed the questions I had. They site I was reading the book did not have the highest quality scans, so I did not completely understand everything that was written.
Wiest, Gerald, and Robert W. Baloh. "The Personal and Scientific Feud Between Ernst Brücke and Josef Hyrtl." Otology & Neurotology 27.4 (2006): 570-75. Web. 3 Feb. 2017. This sources focuses more on the personal life of Hyrtl and his research and work outside of his skull collection. It focuses mostly on Hyrtl’s personal and scientific feud with one of his contemporaries, which made me sceptical of its usefulness as a source. This source gave me more information about who Hyrtl was and why he was so important then any other source I have found. It speaks in depth about Hyrtl’s work as an anatomist and his work in understanding how the human body works. It also spoke to his personal beliefs about how scientific research should be approached. You can see how that might affect the his views on phrenology and how it was used to justify slavery of Africans and the mistreatment of other races.
