For my capstone, I decided to create the College Access Leadership (CAL) program at SLA Beeber. ​This program creates an additional bridge between advisories, advisors and college counselors by having a student from each senior advisory work as an intern for a band every other day. The interns or CALS do presentations for their advisories to relay information from the college office to the seniors. The reason why I decided to make this my capstone is I thought it has been a very productive program throughout my time as a CAL myself so when I discovered that SLA Beeber didn't have this program I knew that this would be the thing for me to tackle.

I wasn't sure how effective of a source this would be for me at first but then I realized that it is really effective. It shows how to really run an effective program, and gives data on their success rates running this program

"Preliminary data, conducted as part of an internal program evaluation, suggest that the SSCs are increasing the numbers of students engaging in and completing the college process: in 2009-2010, more than 70 percent of seniors at two of the sites applied to six or more colleges (there are no data yet on the third site)" This is interesting that with the implementation of this program for New York students by this school teacher the amount of applications to college went up as well as the amount of students that are even engaging in the college process that just goes to show that program implementation like these help kids out with the process.

The University of Chicago did a research on the life of a high school student and the many bumps on the road that they encounter throughout their high school career and gearing up for the college application process. This is a really great insight into seeing what resources people applying to college will need, and allows me to see how the process is different for people that aren't me or from SLA.

 I used to watch this source as entertainment, because I was bored. Now that I look at in for research, I realized how much of an excellent job this source does at providing an overview on video game development. The tips and tricks given in this series really help me understand what developing a video game is like, how to benefit from it and how to deal with its grievances. Because it’s mostly just an overview, I can’t use this for anything specific. However, it can help me keep my sanity while developing a game and give me hope and encouragement for its success.

However, I do prefer to create these things with my own hands and I am willing to do it for the most part. I am willing to change my mind if the situation beckons me to do so.  Video game development is surprisingly expensive and risky, especially for the triple “A” developers. Some developers put up to five hundred million dollars, and more, into developing and advertising one game. That is enough to buy and own a few private islands or a couple of yachts. Thankfully, video games doesn’t need to be that expensive. In fact, anyone can make a game without spending a penny. The free tools to make a video game are scattered across the internet for any upcoming video game developer, like me. This blog can help me find some of these tools for my game. Jason Schreier, Book, 9/5/2017 It is difficult to describe how hard it is to make a video game to anyone who has never made a video game. There is so much that goes into video games and it is a relatively new industry. Thankfully, this book has me covered. I talks about these hardships and uses famous video games, released or not, and how they were developed. It gets into the mind of the developer or developers and shows their intent for the games and any future sequels. This book gives much needed insight in such a difficult task and prepares me for what is to come. 

Swirsky and Pajot, James and Lisanne. “Indie Game” Indie Game” The Movie. James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot, Movie, 6/12/2012
This movie has been out for a while and it has been in my radar, since I do enjoy watching documentaries. This one is about the indie game development scene and what these developers have to go through in order to make their games and market them to a decent sized audience. Viewers of this documentary, later including myself, gain insight on their hardships and how they have to balance their game development and social lives. I know I will go through a lot of the struggles these people have and their stories can help me figure out what to do if I am in some sort of block or corner. Francois and Brady, Lester and Anna. “Game Loading” Game Loading: Rise of the Indies. Lester Francois and Anna Brady, Movies, 4/21/2015 This movie follows several indie game studios and gets into how they develop their games and the hardships of their video game’s development cycles. There is a surprising amount of video game documentaries that cover this and other topics about the video game industry. However, this shouldn’t be surprising to me anyway. The video game industry is one the fastest growing industries in the world and documentaries like these give insight as to the difficulties of the industry. This movie, and others of its kind, will be valuable resources for the capstone I am working on and my future career, if I become a video game developer. 

“Discovery Channel” Rise of the video game. TV Show, aired 11/21/2007 
This show covers the history of video gaming from its humble beginnings to the massive industry it is today. It also covers how some of these games, and their genres, gained popularity, became innovative for the industry, and how they became smash hits. This could be used to, at the very least, gain encouragement to keep going with my capstone. It can also give me inspiration as to what to implement into my capstone in order to make it more fun and interesting for the player. I am just surprised that even the freaking Discovery Channel wants to make a documentary off this.
I came into the capstone thinking that once I learned it, it will be a breeze. My naivete got the best of me and created many hardships to come. When I first heard that capstone is a year long project I knew what I wanted to do, create a video game. I then learned of the extra stuff that needed to be done besides creating the capstone and its presentation. I tried doing all of that, but neglected actually creating the capstone. Once it was january I realized what wasn’t done and had to rethink what kind of game I needed to make. I at first wanted to create a platformer similar to the game “The Mario Bros” (the one after Donkey Kong & before Super Mario Bros), but after learning the time I had to make the game, I settled with a platformer similar to Geometry Dash, but without the scrolling. This was the best time for my capstone because I had a balance between the game and the background stuff. However, things took a turn for the worst when I got lazy and slacked off. I didn’t develop the game enough within the timeframe given. So, I decided to reconsider what kind of game I had to make again and, this time, settled with a game that is like the easter egg minigame from Doom 3 called “Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3”. This game was very easy to develop at such short notice.

Tatiana Ream Capstone

For my senior project, I decided to visit children at the Ronald McDonald house to do a little evening activity with them as well as give them little gifts.The activities I did was bingo and a little bit of arts and crafts along with Athalia Tan. In order to do this, I held a fundraiser in school to raise money to buy the materials needed. The Ronald McDonald House was kind enough to let me borrow their bingo set, all I had to do was buy them the gift bags. Inside the gift bags, I included things I thought could be fun to play with such as bubbles, play-dough and more. The purpose of this visit, was to see how the families cope and deal with either having a family member in the hospital everyday, or constantly having to return to the hospital.

After reviewing this source, I noticed that it gave me a lot of background information. I also noticed that it was an interview put into a sort of document. At first I didn’t think that this source was reliable, but once I started getting more into it, I noticed it has a lot of references. I also saw statistics, and the interview questions that was talked about. Most of the interview questions that were asked answers my capstone question on how families feel about their relatives conditions. So maybe I can use some of these questions to ask the families I get in touch with.

After reviewing this source I got more information on how families cope. I also noticed that this source puts together verses from the bible, which I think is really reliable. It also gives questions families frequently ask doctors when they find out their loved one is diagnosed with an illness. This source helps me a lot because it gives a variety of information. It talks about the many ways someone can be supportive, so this can help me on how to be supportive to the families I talk to.

At first I didn’t think this source would be reliable. Although this interview was about a man’s experience on chronic illness, it was still able to help be gather information. While watching this interview, they introduced the skills they would be talking about which included, coping strategies and impact on family. They also explained ways someone can cope even without family members, but how to on their own. During the interview, the doctor asked the patient many questions on how he coped, and how he felt about the loss while he was a young boy. In the end, this source was pretty useful for me.

This source provides informations on the different strategies to cope with a family member's illness and the impact on it. It not only gave information on how families cope, but how individuals, as well as couples together cope. It gave the many effective ways for both couples and families. A big thing I noticed, was family therapy. I could use this, to see whether the families go through family therapy together or even bring up the different ways I learned, to give them ideas on how to cope. In the end, this source was really helpful for me and I will be using it as a guideline when I visit the Ronald Mcdonald House.

This source is a book called “The impact of Chronic Illness on the Family”. Not only does this source show the different ways to cope, but it also shows what the impacts are for the families. Not every family goes through the same thing, so there are many different  things that could happen. This source gave me a lot of information, and was very helpful with not only coping but also the impact it has.

This source provides information on how to properly say goodbye and cope on a loved ones illness. This shows grief and the challenges that the family could face. This source shows the many causes and effects for Trauma on illness. It gives information about the signs and symptoms to know someone is diagnosed with trauma. Trauma is a really serious thing, and this source can help me know how to properly talk to the families, just in case they are sensitive about a certain topic or thing.

Gil Rosen CAPSTONE

Ultimate frisbee has become a huge part of my life at Science Leadership Academy. Ever since I joined the team back in Junior year, I never looked back. For my capstone, I wanted to do something I was passionate about. I knew doing something on ultimate frisbee was the right idea for me. I wasn’t sure at first what to do. My friend Eli, who is also captain of the Varsity team, approached on the subject and gave the idea for a documentary. I knew it was a fantastic idea since I was in the CTE program. Bringing a documentary about the biggest sport at SLA would be engaging for all. It would also give back to the school. Incoming freshman who wonder what ultimate frisbee is like would watch the documentary and know that the sport is right for them.

For my capstone, I am creating a documentary on the Ultimate Frisbee at Science Leadership Academy. I can collect this knowledge and incorporate each guide to create my own exceeding documentary. For me to explain the sport, I am going to need resources from a website that provides ways to play the game and learn new techniques on how to throw the frisbee properly. This resource is especially helpful because I am not an expert on the sport and I am just a player.

Multiple sources to explain the sport is more helpful for me to understand how to explain it the best. I used the official Ultimate Frisbee organization in the United States to explain the sport. Their phamplet online as a pdf is the best way to understand the sport to the fullest.

I am interviewing teenage boys at Science Leadership Academy about their experience on the ultimate frisbee team. This article will help me develop the same kind of plot for my documentary. I will also interview the coach the same thing that this article addresses.

Na'eem Goins Capstone

​For my capstone, I decided to write a art book that incorporated both poetry and photography. At first,  the book was just going to be different poems that I wrote about my everyday life but I got inspired to write about others. I wanted to provide a space for my classmates to vent and talk about issues that affected them internally. Seeing that my classmates all have different stories and survived dire situations only to not tell their testimonies, I created a platform for that. During the school year, I  interviewed seniors at SLA. My goal was to give them a confidential session that allowed them to share life stories that shaped them into who they are today. Struggle that they never fully shared with their own circle of people. My hope was for them to be proud of their past and feel better after talking to me. I recorded the interviews and listen to them every time I got inspired to write a poem. Putting myself into their shoes, I wrote a poem inspired by that person. Then I volunteered for paid surveys at Penn hospital and saved up money to buy a camera. With that camera, I took picture of the people I interviewed in my own minnie photoshoot setups. When I was done with the interviews, I wrote poems about my own struggles and took photographs that symbolize each poem. I summated all of the poems and pictures into a book that is available for sell.

  • Barthes, Roland. Camera Lucida: Reflections on Photography. The Noonday Press, 1988. I found this source useful because photography is such a big part of my capstone. Barthes exemplified the distinct different between the object and the image, how standard photography is mainly motionless, and feeling a lense on you while posing. The idea that being ask about your favorite photograph and not being able to pinpoint the image, just the desire body, is a powerful thing. I'm trying to make my audience love not the image but the body that's in it.

  • Furedi, Frank. Therapy Culture: Cultivating Vulnerability in an Uncertain Age. Routledge, 2004. I selected this source for the interview portion of my project. It is very important that I have pre knowledge of certain behaviors the interviewees may have, how to help someone become more vulnerable, and ultimately not make the interews a basic conversation. I want to know more than their friends do. Parts of the book really help me understand the reasons for problems in our internal world be what people perceive as personal issue.

  • King, Carla. How to Self-Publish Your Book: a Practical Guide to Creating and Distributing Your E-Book or Print Book. PBS MediaShift, 2013. This source was very helpful because of how much information it have on publishing a book. Being an independent writer and making my first real book, I needed to find cheap, easy, and quick publishing ideas. This book gave me a lot of publishing resources for e books and physical copies. Since I want to make several physical copies of my book for everyone involve to have, I am definitely revisiting this source on companies and free printing. This source has open my eyes to fundraising because It can be very expensive.

  • Wojcik, Pamela Robertson. Movie Acting, the Film Reader. Routledge, 2004. This book was used for the movie part of my capstone. Since I will be the main actor and havent done anything acting in a year, I needed to refresh my mind. Its a big difference between acting on stage and acting in front of the camera, both require different techniques. This source exemplifies on the meaning of "overacting". It doesn't mean that you turn your performance into theatrical acting. I want to make sure that this film becomes my best performance of highschool.

  • Starr, Ringo. Photograph. Genesis Publications, 2015. This source was helpful for my capstone by providing different photography techniques. Since each poem will be accompanied by photographs, it is very important that I get professional quality photographs. This source taught me a lot about portrait photography. I also learned about making it a comfortable environment for the model, focusing on detail, and capturing emotions. This source also provided photographs as examples of the different techniques. Being a artist, I am always open to learning new ways of taking photographs and helping the model show emotion on the picture instead of treating it like fashion.

  • Nelson-Jones, Richard. Essential Counselling and Therapy Skills: the Skilled Client Model. Sage, 2002. This source helped me with interviewing the participants in my capstone. The interview session is the heart of the poems, pictures, movie, and for me to get to know them. This book talked a lot about how to deal with certain questions, how to keep your composure, and remaining neutral in every situation that is presented. This is very important because I want to have great interview sessions and no dull conversations. I also do not want anyone to feel uncomfortable and instead, build trust with me.

  • Feidelson, Charles. Symbolism and American Literature. The University of Chicago Press, 1965. This source help me by completely explaining the symbolism in literacy and why its accepted to the broader but not so much critics. The book bring in sources from medieval times to politics and how language leave little room for symbolism. My poetry is going to have a symbolic style for the book. Its very important that I use metaphors correctly in the book because I want the reader to question what i'm saying and , later, understand. This source gave me a lot of reasons for the use symbols though it was hard to understand.

  • Goins, Naeem C, and Alexa Lahr. “8 The Book: Interview.” 12 Jan. 2018. This source help me alot because it is one of my interviews for the project. Being one of the participant, Alexa talked a lot about her past traumatic experiences with middle school. She had body issues because of what people said about her. Knowing she was different from a young age, she started accepting herself at a Christian camp. She find outs that she is made in God's image and started to look towards the good in being different. During the interview, it was a little challenge trying to get her to open up but she did. I cant go into detail about everything that was talked about during the interview because it is confidential.

  • Goins, Naeem C, and Samantha Davis. “8 The Book: Interviews.” 12 Jan. 2018. During our interview, Sam was very open to talk about her deep connection with the good times and bad. She first started talking about her social skills being an only child, which both me and her share. Then, skin color became the topic of conversation. As a woman of color, Sam talk to me about the hardships with having a dark complexion. She never felt truly accepted or attractive to the people who share her skin color. She even shed light on people perception of her because of her personality and her family.

  • Goins, Naeem C, and Tatiana V Rivera. “8 The Book: Interviews.” 12 Jan. 2018. This source help me by becoming one of the interviews that inspired a poem in my book. Tatiana came into the interview already comfortable because we had deep conversations before. It seem like she couldn't wait to talk to me about her life and situations, good and bad. She first talk about her contribution to her home. Working under the table jobs, sacrificing her youth to mature quicker for her siblings, and her relationship with her mom. She found her peace when coming to Science Leadership Academy where she found that she had many opportunities. She inspire me to make a heartfelt poem that require me to do a lot of self examining in order to put myself in her shoes.
