For my capstone, I decided to create the College Access Leadership (CAL) program at SLA Beeber. This program creates an additional bridge between advisories, advisors and college counselors by having a student from each senior advisory work as an intern for a band every other day. The interns or CALS do presentations for their advisories to relay information from the college office to the seniors. The reason why I decided to make this my capstone is I thought it has been a very productive program throughout my time as a CAL myself so when I discovered that SLA Beeber didn't have this program I knew that this would be the thing for me to tackle.

"College Now | Leaders in College Access & Completion." College Now Greater Cleveland. Accessed January 24, 2018. https://www.collegenowgc.org/leaders-in-college-access-completion/.

This is a successful peer college mentoring program that is established in Cleveland, Ohio. I wasn't sure how effective of a source this would be for me at first but then I realized that it is really effective. It shows how to really run an effective program, and gives data on their success rates running this program

"Preliminary data, conducted as part of an internal program evaluation, suggest that the SSCs are increasing the numbers of students engaging in and completing the college process: in 2009-2010, more than 70 percent of seniors at two of the sites applied to six or more colleges (there are no data yet on the third site)" This is interesting that with the implementation of this program for New York students by this school teacher the amount of applications to college went up as well as the amount of students that are even engaging in the college process that just goes to show that program implementation like these help kids out with the process.

The University of Chicago did a research on the life of a high school student and the many bumps on the road that they encounter throughout their high school career and gearing up for the college application process. This is a really great insight into seeing what resources people applying to college will need, and allows me to see how the process is different for people that aren't me or from SLA.

Aniya Linder Capstone

Posted by Aniya Linder in Capstone · Hernandez/Hull · Wed on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 9:45 pm

For my senior project also known as Capstone, I organized and hosted an art auction to raise money to buy feminine hygiene products for homeless and less fortunate women. This event took place on March 23rd, 2018 in the cafe of Science Leadership Academy. As a young woman who is fairly poor, I could understand what it is like to struggle to buy tampons and pads that are suitable for me. For someone who is less fortunate than me to try to survive is a terrible thing to imagine. I feel that it is my duty along with other women to help other women accomplish anything they feel is right. The name that I came up with to give the public an idea of what this charity is about is “Lady River.” To me, the Lady River is to represent women diversity. The struggles that women have to overcome are unimaginable and diverse so that is what is in that river. Rivers are flexible and never know what you're going to get from them nevertheless they are beautiful. I was able to obtain more than 50 pieces of art from amazing artists of different backgrounds. With the help of friends and Braskem Lady River made $1,200 and is still continuing to make for money by selling shirts, photography, and small paintings. With the money raised and the products donated I want to create bags with the essential products and give them to different shelters in Philly. When I leave SLA I plan to continue Lady River. I want to create a website that allows people to make cash donations and send product donations so that Lady River will meet their daily demands. Bibliography Capstone Annotated Bibliography "Be There with Evite™." Invitations, Free eCards and Party Planning Ideas from Evite. Accessed January 26, 2018. https://www.evite.com/. I was looking for a site to use that I could make a mass invitation to the art auction. I typed in Google's search engine and that was the first one to come up. I wanted to find the most efficient way to RSVP guest and this was the way. This website is the best because they walk you through the process, offer free invites, and have really good reviews. The free event that they allow you to make gives you a lot of freedom to be creative with the formatting and the theme of the event, unlike other websites. Many would ask why not ask people to come by messaging on social media or old fashion mailing on paper and answer would be because people forget things and mailing takes a long time and mail tends to get lost in the postal system. Embroidery, Bolt Printing and. "Basic 100% Cotton TShirt." Design Online Custom Printed Best Deals Basic 100% Cotton Tshirts BD54 | Bolt Printing. Accessed January 26, 2018. https://www.boltprinting.com/productInfo.php?id=BD54. I will be using this company to make the shirts that will be sold at the Lady River Art Auction. This site get the printing done fast, the shipping is inexpensive, and the shirts themselves are inexpensive. There are lots of companies that I could have decided to go to but there is no other shop that charges at the price as this one. They have great reviews. Also this brand does not put their design on the outside of the shirt where my design will be they put the company's logo on the inside. “Bolt Printing” gives you a lot of control of how the shirt will look and they give you a lot of options and thorough description of the materials used for the shirts which most companies don’t. This video was produced by Bustle and it was to tell people how homeless women cope with their periods. This video is what helped me decide what wanted to do for my capstone because it made me open my eyes a bit more and realize that these women do not have it easy. I believe that being cleaning should not be a luxury. This video is the perfect representation of just that. The way that these women have to try to keep themselves clean when their cycle comes on has led me to think about what I and other people can do for them in the most efficient way possible. Accessed January 26, 2018. http://www.fundraiserinsight.org/articles/host-fundraising-art-auction.html. There are certain things in the art auction that cost a lot of money that I don’t have so I had to figure out ways to raise money and make a huge profit. My initial thought was to do a bake sale but it is time-consuming and expensive to bake and or buy baked goods. However, I found a pretzel factory called “Center City Pretzels” that sells a whole case of pretzels for twelve dollars. I found that if I sold the pretzels for two dollars a piece I could make forty-eight dollars profit based off of the number of pretzels that came in the case. Ibele, Terry. Also, they give you a sample form to use for a silent auction if you are planning on doing one. I did not know how to go about how to do a silent auction but I wasn’t exactly sure. Although none of the sites that I found were credible it was likely that I wasn’t going to find one so it was based on my judgment. "Lunette Menstrual Cups Donated to Charities - Charity Work." Lunette. Accessed January 25, 2018. https://store.lunette.com/pages/giving-back. Lunette is a company that makes menstrual cups and they are a company that is known or donated their products to Nairobi, Kenya. They started “The Cup” project in 2015 to educate girls by helping them with their bodies changing, and providing them with a menstrual cup and that is very important. The biggest problem for girls in Kenya is the lack of proper sanitary protect. Most girls miss one week per month because of their periods. Eventually, they drop out of school earlier than boys. Although I may be catering to homeless women that are fully developed and educated on the menstruation process they both have the same struggle. Lunette is a very important company for my capstone because with research I found that they cater to women that are not able to provide for themselves and or their children. "Overington House Women's Interview." Interview by author. January 12, 18. The “Joy Of Living” also known as the Overington House Services include transitional housing for women with children. We came to the Overington House to donate products to the women there and we also went there to see what feminine hygiene products we could get for them to make their lives easier. Talking to the women at the home made us realize that all though they don't have much they are human and they deserve to get the products that they like. These women were very specific about the kind of products that they wanted and they made it very clear about what they needed from us. Going into their home was very risky because this place is their safe place and then us walking in it expecting to help is very scary for us and them. It was hard to let them know that we are only here to assist them in any way. Ross, MD Elisa. "Tired of Tampons? Here Are Pros and Cons of Menstrual Cups." Health Essentials from Cleveland Clinic. July 14, 2015. Accessed January 26, 2018. https://health.clevelandclinic.org/2015/02/tired-of-tampons-here-are-pros-and-cons-of-menstru al-cups/. This website helped me figure out what menstrual product would best to propose to women that I would encounter. I thought about pads and tampons but then I thought about how those are not products that women could afford on their own. Even the average woman struggles with affording these products. Leaving these products on/in for an extended amount of time is very unsanitary and can also lead to toxic shock syndrome when talking about tampons. With menstrual cups the vaginal pH and beneficial bacteria stay in place, less embarrassing odor, lower costs, less landfill waste, more time in between changes, intercourse is possible with the cup in place, and easy to use. This site was the one I used because it’s straight to the point and it is credible. "School Selection Results." Science Leadership Academy @ Center City. Accessed January 26, 2018. https://scienceleadership.org/. It may be a little silly to use the high school that I attend as one of my resources but without the people in it, I would not have been able to do it without them. I recruited most of my artist from SLA. All of the students at SLA have some sort of artistic and or creative side to them so I know that scouting here would be perfect. I would have done this anywhere else it would be hard to keep track with the people that I am working with in regards to when they will be done with their piece and what they are doing for their piece. "SLA Engineering Division." Inspiring Innovation! Accessed January 26, 2018. http://engineering.sla.org/. In my art auction, I am one of the artists. I wanted to represent a part of African American women in the auction. I etched a design of an African American women with flowers in her hair into wood and then I drilled LED lights through the centers of the flowers, sprinkled artificial snowflakes on the flowers, stained the wood with medium brown protective stainer. I also created a metal box to cover the wires from the LED lights and to act as a frame for the artwork. I would not have been able to do that without the incredibly skilled people in that room. The SLA engineers are great at what they do. I could have gone to somewhere else to do this project but it would have been a lot more expensive and fewer hands on.

https://vetpath.weebly.com/   (Capstone Link)

For my capstone, I decided to create a website the gives aspiring vets a step by step process on how to become a veterinarian. The purpose of my website is to help guide aspiring veterinarians on the path to achieving a career within the veterinary field. The site covers a wide array of topics that will span over the entire process of becoming a veterinarian. The topics include "Early Commitment to Academic Success", "Getting Involved", "College Preparation", "Externship Opportunities", and a Conclusion of finally being a vet. The reason why I chose this to make this my capstone is because I never had a step by step process for this career laid out for me. So I decided to create my own process based off of my detailed research and knowledge gained from volunteering at the Wyncote Animal Hospital. The process for my capstone went pretty smoothly for the most part. I had know problem with gathering all of my resources, working with Dr. Wade at the Wyncote Animal Hospital, and creating my website. The only issue was trying to balance both capstone work and regular school work. Looking back on everything I’ve done leading up to the publishing of my website, I realized that I learned so much from my own process. I now have a better understanding of what needs to be done in order to get into a vet school and I now understand the whole process of acquiring a veterinary licence.

Bibliography

“History of the veterinary profession.” RCVS Knowledge, https://knowledge.rcvs.org.uk/heritage-and-history/history-of-the-veterinary-profession/ . Before talking about how to be a veterinarian, I wanted to do some digging into the origins of veterinary medicine. To find out who was truly the first veterinarian. This source provided me with all the information I needed on the origins of veterinary medicine. According to this source, the first "animal healer" was a man named Urlugaledinna and he lived in Mesopotamia during 3000 BC. The first veterinary school was founded in 1761 in Lyon, France by a man named Claude Bourgelat. This source is credible because it was written by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in London, England.

“How Much do Vets Make a Year?” How to Become a Veterinarian, www.veterinarianedu.org/2017/06/how-much-do-vets-make-a-year/.  One of the reasons why I want to be a veterinarian is because I would get to do what I love and get paid a whole lot of money for it. This source provides me with a very detailed layout of the salary ranges for different kinds of veterinarians and their level of demand. According to this source, it turns out that Horse vets make the most money and they're in high demand. The credibility of this source is very good because it was created by Veterinarian.EDU. This is an organization whose purpose is to veterinarians in the right directions of their career path. This source has been very beneficial for me because before deciding what kind of vet I wanna be, I wanna know how good of a living I make make from that specialty. So reading through this source was very eye opening for me and it has inspired me to want to look more in the horse field of veterinary medicine.

“Kansas State University.” CVM Diversity | History: Prominent African Americans in Veterinary Medicine, www.vet.k-state.edu/about/diversity/history-aa.html.  As a black person that wants to be apart of a profession that is predominantly white, It is important to me that I learn about other black veterinarians in history. This source gives me a list of black veterinarians and brief summaries of how they came to be vets. This source is credible because it was created by Kansas State University, which happens to be a college of veterinary medicine. This page was written because they wanted to shed some light on history's vets of color. Finding this source was so inspiring because I never knew about any of these men or that there were many black veterinarians. Knowing all of this now gives me a legacy to live up to. To be that beacon of diversity like all the black vets before me.

Kramer, Mary Hope. “Learn About Being a Large Animal Veterinarian - Job Duties and More.” The Balance, www.thebalance.com/large-animal-veterinarian-125800. Out of all the veterinary specialties, I'm very intrigued by the large animal specialty. Big animals have always been interesting to me growing up because they just stand out. This source gives me all the stats on what it is like to be a large animal veterinarian. It talks about the education needed, the training, the duties, the career options, the salaries, and the job outlook. This source is credible because the author, Mary Hope Kramer, is an animal industry professional and writer with over a decade of experience of being a small and large animal vet. If I were to become a large animal vet, I would want to work with not just the farm animals, but also the large zoo animals.

Kramer, Mary Hope. “8 Steps to Start a Veterinary Practice.” The Balance, www.thebalance.com/how-to-start-a-veterinary-practice-125508. Even though I'm not sure if I want to start my own practice in the future, this is a great source to refer to now. This source gives you a detailed step by step process on how to smoothly start your own practice. It seems like a lot work, but it's an exceptional challenge in independency. The credibility of this source is very good because this article was also written by animal industry professional, Mary Hope Kramer. I trust her writing because as I wrote before, she has experience in the veterinary field. So it's good to learn from someone who's actually been through a process of becoming a vet and is a business woman.

“List of Veterinary Schools | Costs for Veterinary Students.” JobMonkey, www.jobmonkey.com/animaljobs/vet-schools/ . This source is credible because it is providing me with a long list of veterinary schools that are in the united states and in other countries as well. On this list, each name of the vet schools provides you with a hyperlink to their school website that has all the information you need in terms of in/out of state tuition, location, student to faculty ratio, size of the student body, etc. This source is beneficial for me because it helps me to know where to look for vet schools. Before this website, I really only knew of four or five vet schools, now I know all of them. I don't know which vet school I want to attend yet, but it is still nice to have some options.

“Steps to Becoming a Veterinarian (Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Major).” Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Major (Penn State University), http://vbs.psu.edu/majors/vbs/steps-to-becoming-a-veterinarian. This source is basically the whole premise of my capstone project. It is a whole step by step process that puts you on the right path to becoming a veterinarian. This source is credible because it was created by a higher education institution, Penn State University. Penn State is able to discuss this because they have their own veterinary and biomedical science major for aspiring vets such as myself. This source is very beneficial to me because it will be used as a referral for when I create my own step by step process to show in my prezi presentation.

“Summer Vets Programs.” PennVet, www.vet.upenn.edu/education/admissions/summer-vets-program. This source is actually pretty personal for me because I actually took part in UPenn' s summer vets program last summer and I learned a lot about the different studies in vet school, what it takes to get into a vet school, and the different professions within the veterinary field. This source was credible because it was created by the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine. I will be able to benefit from this source a lot because it touches on the studies that aspiring vet students will have the options to take if the attend a vet school. I think this could be some helpful information for my presentation.

“ Veterinary specialists.” Veterinary specialists, www.avma.org/public/YourVet/Pages/veterinary-specialists.aspx. When aspiring to be a veterinarian, one must know all of the different specialties before coming to a conclusion on which one they want to be. This source gives you a complete list of the many types of veterinary specialties and a quick summary of what each specialty entails. This source is credible because it was created by the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF). "The AVMA is the nation’s leading advocate for the veterinary profession. Representing more than 91,000 members, they protect, promote and advance the needs of all veterinarians and those they serve." This source is very beneficial for me because I'm still figuring out what kind of vet I want to be. To see this list helps a lot because it'll help me weed out the professions that don't fit my needs.

Wulf, M., and A. Voss. “MRSA in livestock animals-an epidemic waiting to happen?” Clinical Microbiology and Infection, Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 4 Mar. 2008, http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/j.1469-0691.2008.01970.x/full. This source is credible because the authors of this abstract are both microbiology veterinarians who both work for prestigious laboratorys. This source is about how veterinarians who specialize in large farm animals are in high demand to prevent the spread of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA). MRSA is a zoonotic disease. What this means is that this is a type of disease that can spread from animal to human. In this specific case, MRSA has spread from pigs to humans. This source is beneficial to me because it helps me know what types of vet professions are needed in today's economy. When I begin to attend vet school after I finish my undergraduate education, I want to be able to secure a job that actually needs me.

Justin Mack's Capstone

Posted by Justin Mack in Capstone · Hernandez/Hull · Wed on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 8:25 pm

For my capstone, I hosted a shoe drive throughout the month of April. I hosted this shoe drive to gain more experience in giving back to others who are in need. I also have a passion for collecting sneakers so I knew doing a shoe drive was exactly what I wanted to do. I noticeably found out that people tend to sell and throw away sneakers in good conditions, and hosting a shoe drive will instead attract people to give them away to a better cause. I worked with an organization called Soles4Souls which serves a mission of providing relief by distributing sneakers all around the world to the people in need. This shoe drive brought variety of pairs of sneakers from pre-owned to brand new, different colors and sizes. With my process of my shoe drive, I post this on social media and asked friends and family who had shoes they wanted to donate. After my shoe drive, I received over fourty pairs of shoes in different conditions and sizes. With the shoes I gathered, I sorted them out by sizes from youth and women sizes in one bag, and men sizes in another bag. I then drove an hour to New Jersey to hand deliver the sneakers to my local drop off location. I found this shoe drive very successful, as I felt like I was only going to receive a few pairs of shoes, instead, receiving and achieving over my intended goal of 30 pairs of sneaker donations.

Annotated Bibliography

Ravenhill, Megan. The Culture of Homelessness. Routledge, 2016.

After reviewing this source, it provided a lot of experiences with the homeless as well as causes that impacts a person into becoming homeless. It also provides the impact on long-term homelessness and homelessness process of getting back on their feet into a house society. This source gives me more insight on how homelessness is caused and the process of living as a homeless. What I noticed was that this book was published in 2016, meaning that these are fairly recent news regarding the homelessness of the 21st century. This source is more of an overview over homelessness for my project and later on in this capstone process, use this morally as an introduction for my film and presentation.

“Characteristics of Persons Who Are Homeless for the First Time.” Psychiatric Services, 1 Nov. 2002, ps.psychiatryonline.org/doi/full/10.1176/appi.ps.53.11.1472.

This source showed the characteristics of a person who becomes homeless for the first time. Something that I notice is that this homeless project took place in Toronto and interviewed 300 people in a homeless shelter who had recently became homeless. They had more similarities than differences and a major similarity is from the way that they all had issues regarding childhood experiences that relates to housing. The people who have short term experience with homelessness, after 6 months, 60 percent will fall right back into homelessness and into homeless shelters. This source is credible to me because I can use this in the beginning of my documentation.

Uccioli, Luigi, et al. “Manufactured Shoes in the Prevention of Diabetic Foot Ulcers.” Diabetes Care, American Diabetes Association, 1 Oct. 1995, care.diabetesjournals.org/content/18/10/1376.

This source is credible to me because it explains the effects of people without shoes. Many homeless people do not have something to walk in. Homeless people are always on their feet begging for money, or traveling to somewhere safer for them. Many of the homeless can inherit foot ulcers which can be bad for the homeless. Researchers find that it can get worse when continuing to walk without treatment. This source was really helpful for me because I may run into a homeless who has a foot ulceration and providing a gift of shoes to them will be helpful.

To, Matthew J., et al. “Foot Conditions among Homeless Persons: A Systematic Review.” PLOS ONE, Public Library of Science, 9 Dec. 2016, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5147925/.

Foot problems are a common issue from homeless people, but are also very overlooked. This source summarizes the research about foot conditions and associated interventions among the homeless. Walking is a common form of transportation among the homeless which increases the risk of foot problems. Overall, the lack of health services because of financial resources prevents the homeless to recieve the right and best treatments. This source is credible to me because it gives me more information on why the homeless needs shoes more than anything. There are too many who walks barefoot especially in the cold and hot weathers.

News, CBS. “The Rise of Sneaker Culture.” CBS News, CBS Interactive, 1 Dec. 2016, www.cbsnews.com/pictures/the-rise-of-sneaker-culture/.

This source gives me an insight on “the sneaker culture” meaning that I learn more about how sneakers evolved and became important to the fashion as well as lifestyle industry. The gallery of particular shoes and the description about how its fame was created, showed that the particular choice of primary colors and geometric shapes, as well as the limited pairs made, which makes the demand for the shoe much higher. This source isn’t particularly going to make a big impact on my presentation, but it gives me a better reasoning to donate shoes to the homeless as a sign of giving them something they can cherish.

Johnson, Robert. “I Spent The Night In A Homeless Shelter-Here's What It Was Like.” Business Insider, Business Insider, 18 Jan. 2012, www.businessinsider.com/sleepingin-a-homeless-shelter-2012-1.

A reporter decided to see what it's like to be in a homeless shelter. He tried going into one in New York City, but he failed. He turned his way to Atlantic City where he somehow found a source that would take him in. The reporter explained that everything was well except for the bed, which was very tight and had trouble sleeping. This source is credible for my documentary because I am able to use this as a source on how homeless shelters are a good place for the homeless and with the amount of shoes I’m donating, it can be brought to a good home.

Silverman, MD Lance. “Two-Thirds Of Homeless Population Suffers From Foot Problems | Foot Doctor in St. Paul.” Silverman Ankle & Foot - Edina Orthopedic Surgeon, 22 Feb. 2017, www.anklefootmd.com/two-thirds-homeless-population-suffers-foot-problems/.

This source just like all my other foot sources, talks about the problems within the foot that the homeless has. Although this source provides much more in depth and main quotes from 2 students at Dalhousie Medical School in Canada, whose going out to these abrupted homeless populations. This is credible for my documentary because I want to run into these homeless people so that I can provide them a place to seek treatment. The shoe itself will not bring treatment, but ease foot problems and take some heavy weight off their feet.

dot, Toeslayer. “All about shoes.” The anatomy of the shoe, 1 Jan. 1970, allaboutshoes-toeslayer.blogspot.com/2009/10/anatomy-of-shoe-according-to-mcphoil.html

This source gives me the anatomy of a shoe which basically every part and function of shoe. It explains the different materials used, as well as how stitching works. It isn’t going to be used as a part of my project, but it is important for my process for just knowing more about a shoe and knowing every detailed part which gives my project informative based. I still find it credible because I am thinking about adding this onto the website I’m going to create for this project so that when I present, it gives details about it and how comfort plays a part within it.

“Best Sneakers For Walking.” Health.com, Oct. 2015, www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20680036,00.html#sketchers-go-step.

I chose this source as a primary source because when I get into the process of using all my funds for finding a sneaker I want to buy, this would be the source I would go to. It has the perfect pairs that are affordable, as well as essential comfort parts that would provide cushioning. These would be good pairs for the homeless due to the fact that they travel their distance by feet. It would not impact my presentation itself, but it would show within the core value of research on how I found a credible source for choosing sneakers.

Fuller, Carey. “Homeless Shelter Systems and What They Don't Tell You.” The Huffington Post, TheHuffingtonPost.com, 27 Oct. 2011, www.huffingtonpost.com/carey-fuller/homeless-shelter-parents_b_1035952.html.

In a homeless shelter, this post explains that there is no guarantee when going to a homeless shelter. There is a process that the homeless has to go through. Even if they go through the process, there is still no guarantee that they will be manageable to get into the homeless shelter. They explained that there is also eligibility requirements. The particular man writing the post explains that he had an addiction which would not provide him shelter. I find this source credible to me because it gives me more details about homeless shelters that not all outside sources would hear about.

Job Shadowing

Posted by Obie Hazzard in Capstone · Hernandez/Hull · Wed on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 7:53 pm

I volunteer at 5 different locations and I will pick which one I would like to have as my current paid job. Lately CCT (the bus service I can use sometimes) has not been on time and we would have to cancel the job shadowing. This shows that sometimes that CCT is not always reliable and I cannot go to long destinations for job shadowing. I will work at a place called Philadelphia Fight which helps people with STDs.

Over the past several years, art therapy has become a very popular form of treatment for special education students and kids with other behavioral, emotional or psychological issues. For me art therapy has been my favorite way of learning. It teaches different types of skills such as learning academic skills, symmetry which is a math skill and social skills as they are more engaged with each other.  It is also a fun way for students of all ages to learn because they get to see what they are creating. For my Capstone I went to Greenfield and did projects with the students in Mrs. Serra’s class. We did different projects such as painting pumpkins and painting hearts for Halloween and Valentine’s Day. In order to plan this project I had to research different ideas and send them to Mrs. Serra to get them approved, once she approved them I had to go out and buy the supplies and get them ready for the students. The hard part of this project was finding something that worked with all the students and their disabilities. In the end of this Capstone I have gained experience in working with children with disabilities.

Carlos Rivera Annotated Bibliography Floyd, Daniel. "Extra Credits" Extra Credits: Game Design. Daniel Floyd, YouTube Playlist, Last Updated Mar 8, 2017. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLhyKYa0YJ_5BkTruCmaBBZ8z6cP9KzPiX
I used to watch this source as entertainment, because I was bored. Now that I look at in for research, I realized how much of an excellent job this source does at providing an overview on video game development. The tips and tricks given in this series really help me understand what developing a video game is like, how to benefit from it and how to deal with its grievances. Because it’s mostly just an overview, I can’t use this for anything specific. However, it can help me keep my sanity while developing a game and give me hope and encouragement for its success.

Arcila, David. “Zeef” Game Development Resources. David Arcila, Blog, last updated 1/22, 2013. https://game-development.zeef.com/david.arcila
I recently found this site whilst looking for an online chiptune music creation app. This blog is chalk full of tutorials, free music, game engines, character generators, and so much more for any developer to use for their games and other applications. The possibilities are endless with how much this blog post could help me with my capstone, which is a video game. However, I do prefer to create these things with my own hands and I am willing to do it for the most part. I am willing to change my mind if the situation beckons me to do so. Chapple, Craig. “develop-online” 16 ways to make your game for free.

Craig Chapple, Blog, 5/24/2014 http://www.develop-online.net/tools-and-tech/16-ways-to-make-your-game-for-free/0193040
Video game development is surprisingly expensive and risky, especially for the triple “A” developers. Some developers put up to five hundred million dollars, and more, into developing and advertising one game. That is enough to buy and own a few private islands or a couple of yachts. Thankfully, video games doesn’t need to be that expensive. In fact, anyone can make a game without spending a penny. The free tools to make a video game are scattered across the internet for any upcoming video game developer, like me. This blog can help me find some of these tools for my game. Schreier, Jason. “Blood, Sweat, and Pixels” Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made. Jason Schreier, Book, 9/5/2017 It is difficult to describe how hard it is to make a video game to anyone who has never made a video game. There is so much that goes into video games and it is a relatively new industry. Thankfully, this book has me covered. I talks about these hardships and uses famous video games, released or not, and how they were developed. It gets into the mind of the developer or developers and shows their intent for the games and any future sequels. This book gives much needed insight in such a difficult task and prepares me for what is to come.

Swirsky and Pajot, James and Lisanne. “Indie Game” Indie Game” The Movie. James Swirsky and Lisanne Pajot, Movie, 6/12/2012
This movie has been out for a while and it has been in my radar, since I do enjoy watching documentaries. This one is about the indie game development scene and what these developers have to go through in order to make their games and market them to a decent sized audience. Viewers of this documentary, later including myself, gain insight on their hardships and how they have to balance their game development and social lives. I know I will go through a lot of the struggles these people have and their stories can help me figure out what to do if I am in some sort of block or corner. Francois and Brady, Lester and Anna. “Game Loading” Game Loading: Rise of the Indies. Lester Francois and Anna Brady, Movies, 4/21/2015 This movie follows several indie game studios and gets into how they develop their games and the hardships of their video game’s development cycles. There is a surprising amount of video game documentaries that cover this and other topics about the video game industry. However, this shouldn’t be surprising to me anyway. The video game industry is one the fastest growing industries in the world and documentaries like these give insight as to the difficulties of the industry. This movie, and others of its kind, will be valuable resources for the capstone I am working on and my future career, if I become a video game developer.

“Discovery Channel” Rise of the video game. TV Show, aired 11/21/2007
This show covers the history of video gaming from its humble beginnings to the massive industry it is today. It also covers how some of these games, and their genres, gained popularity, became innovative for the industry, and how they became smash hits. This could be used to, at the very least, gain encouragement to keep going with my capstone. It can also give me inspiration as to what to implement into my capstone in order to make it more fun and interesting for the player. I am just surprised that even the freaking Discovery Channel wants to make a documentary off this.
I came into the capstone thinking that once I learned it, it will be a breeze. My naivete got the best of me and created many hardships to come. When I first heard that capstone is a year long project I knew what I wanted to do, create a video game. I then learned of the extra stuff that needed to be done besides creating the capstone and its presentation. I tried doing all of that, but neglected actually creating the capstone. Once it was january I realized what wasn’t done and had to rethink what kind of game I needed to make. I at first wanted to create a platformer similar to the game “The Mario Bros” (the one after Donkey Kong & before Super Mario Bros), but after learning the time I had to make the game, I settled with a platformer similar to Geometry Dash, but without the scrolling. This was the best time for my capstone because I had a balance between the game and the background stuff. However, things took a turn for the worst when I got lazy and slacked off. I didn’t develop the game enough within the timeframe given. So, I decided to reconsider what kind of game I had to make again and, this time, settled with a game that is like the easter egg minigame from Doom 3 called “Super Turbo Turkey Puncher 3”. This game was very easy to develop at such short notice.

Lydia Anderson Capstone

Posted by Lydia Anderson in Capstone · Hernandez/Hull · Wed on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 1:41 pm

My Capstone was a series of essays that detail the reasoning behind three different feeling categories; Happy, Sad, and Angry. Under each section there are four essays, making twelve in total. I decided to do this as my capstone because I wanted to better understand why I felt the way I did about certain things, as well as process certain feelings. I thought while starting my capstone that writing my initial thoughts about my feelings, others would be able to relate to them and find some kind of comfort. The writing process for this body of work was daunting, as the content I was writing was incredibly personal, and as a result, I got in my feelings a lot. This made the writing process much harder for me, I frequently felt emotionally spent by the process. I learned a lot about my ability to confront my feelings, or lack of ability. I learned how my reactions affect people, and what I can do to make sure what I say doesn’t have a negative effect on the wrong people. Overall, I am incredibly proud of the work I’ve produced and I hope that people understand the messages that I hoped to convey. Click on the image to get the link to the PDF of my final work.

FINAL CAPSTONE ESSAYS

Annotated Bibliography

Baldwin, James. The Fire Next Time. Dial Press, 1963

The Fire Next Time is a poetic story that has a complex commentary on the issues that Black Americans faced in the Civil Rights Era. The two essays together serve as a commentary on race relations in the 1960s as a whole and the intersectional issues that race and religion often make for black people of faith. Baldwin’s language in both pieces of The Fire Next Time

De Beauvoir, Simone. “Untitled” Received by Nelson Algren, 1951,  pp. 1–1.

For the beginning quote of the section “Angry” I will use a quote from a letter Simone De Beauvoir sent her longtime beau Nelson Algren. She wrote to him and during it she says “I am awfully greedy; I want everything from life. I want to be a woman and to be a man, to have many friends and to have loneliness, to work much and write good books, to travel and enjoy myself, to be selfish and to be unselfish… You see, it is difficult to get all which I want. And then when I do not succeed I get mad with anger.” This quote speak a lot to me because I find that often the source of my anger stems from frustration. I chose to use this quote because of how it resonates to the feelings reflected in the section that follows it, “Anger”.

Gay, Roxane. Bad Feminist. Harper Perennial, 2014

In my journey to prepare for this project I read several different essay books. I chose to use Bad Feminist as one of my example readings. I used this book mainly as a way to understand and dissect how Roxane Gay relates to her readers, how her dialogue flows and how I can use my own words in my work in a similar way.

Huxley, Aldous. Unknown.

To begin the section entitled “Happy”. Aldous Huxley is credited with saying “Happiness is not achieved by the conscious pursuit of happiness; it is generally the by-product of other activities.” The majority of the things that have made me happy, were not something I planned. The essays I am writing in this section fit this quote very well and I think that this quote is a good way to set the atmosphere going into the section.

McPeck-Stringham, Marisa. “I Can't Get Out of My Sweat Pants: An Essay on Depression.” The Huffington Post, TheHuffingtonPost.com, 30 Apr. 2015, www.huffingtonpost.com/marisa-mcpeckstringham/i-cant-get-out-of-my-sweat-pants-an-essay-on-depression_b_7175836.html.

As I partially mention in other sections, I am planning on writing about some very hard times in my life, some that people may not be able to handle. This essay talks about these things in a way that is emotional, but not so much so that it doesn’t work to convey the message. I used this to study the way she finds that balance in her writing, which I sometimes have trouble with.

Orwell, George. “A Hanging.” George Orwell - A Hanging - Essay, www.george-orwell.org/A_Hanging/0.html.

I used this essay as a reference point in my early research, before I started reading the essay books of other authors. In several different articles about essays, this one written by George Orwell came up several times in several different articles. After I read it I got the vibe that Orwell has a very dark, haunting way of describing things. It was interesting to read and overall, his essay made me understand exactly the way I was going to approach writing for “Angry” and “Sad” because I plan to talk about very emotionally taxing times of my life in those sections.

Sedaris, David. Naked. Little, Brown and Company, 1997.

I used several different sources to gather inspiration for the way I would write. Sedaris is known for adding a sarcastic and humorous tone in his writing, usually about awkward situations he has been in. He writes in a very cynical way but still people enjoy his books immensely. As a writer he has found the balance between being a skeptic and not being a complete downer in his essays. He’s essentially turned the things that were really hard for him into something funny for other people to equally enjoy. I can relate to some of the emotions he has and reading this book helped me understand how he manages to convey the messages he does, the way he does.

Staff, SLA. “CAPSTONE.” Google Sites, Science Leadership Academy,

https://sites.google.com/a/scienceleadership.org/capstone/home

The Capstone website mainly serves as a base for any work I do. The capstone project has a lot of rules and a strict structure. Whenever I do work on my capstone, I have to have a tab with this site open so I know that I’m actually answering what is being asked of me by

SLA.

Schulten, Katherine. “From 'Lives' to 'Modern Love': Writing Personal Essays With Help From The New York Times.” The New York Times, The New York Times, 20 Oct. 2016,

www.nytimes.com/2016/10/20/learning/lesson-plans/from-lives-to-modern-love-writing-personal-essays-with-help-from-the-new-york-times.html.

I used this article in my search for advice on what to avoid and use when writing my essays. It explains common tropes and mistakes that people run into when they write personal essays in a way that makes a lot of sense. This helps me distinguish my writing because I now know what to avoid and what to continue doing when writing essays like this.

Thoreau, Henry David, and Bill McKibben. “Chapter One / Economy .” Walden, Beacon Press, 2004, pp. 11–11.

I used a quote from Henry David Thoreau as a preface to the section entitled “Nervous”. The quote goes as follows: “In any weather, at any hour of the day or night, I have been anxious to improve the nick of time, and notch it on my stick too; to stand on the meeting of two eternities, the past and future, which is precisely the present moment; to toe that line.” This quote for me represents and personifies some of the feelings I have when I am nervous, which makes it fit well as a preface to this section.

For my capstone, I wanted to do something that incorporated the Philadelphia music scene. I like photography and I have prior experience making portfolios. So, I decided to try photojournalism by taking candid pictures of two Philly bands Georgey V and Well Room. I was interested in helping these bands get publicity while learning more about the music industry. I interviewed both bands to learn about how and why they got involved in shows. After completing this project, I realized despite knowing a lot about this community, there’s a lot I didn’t know about the process of writing music, recording and performing.

Bennett, Andy, and Richard A. Peterson. Music Scenes: Local, Translocal and Virtual. Vanderbilt University Press, 2004.

This book indicates several ways in which music is shared with communities. A large part of this book revolved around the subject of technology’s effect of music industry and platforms. I found that the discussion on contrast between individual music scenes helped me gather more information about how these communities develop.

Briggs, Mark, and Jennifer Preston. Journalism a Practical Guide to Digital Reporting and Publishing. Sage, 2016.

Reading Journalism a Practical Guide to Digital Reporting was a helpful way to understand the methods used within photojournalism. Previously I’ve never taken many candid shots, but for this project I knew there would be a lot of movement. Instead of trying to give the illusion that these shots weren’t posed, I decided to take photos while the bands were actively playing their music. The movement helps tells a story, one of the key factors of photojournalism.

Becker, Howard S. “Photography and Sociology: Studies in Visual Communication.” Contemporary Sociology, vol. 31, no. 2, Oct. 2002, p. 250.

This source is a journal from a scientific study on visual communication through photography. It gave helpful insight into studies about the development and structure of human society. Answering important questions about why visual communication like photography intertwines with sociology.

Hevner, K. “Expression in Music: a Discussion of Experimental Studies and Theories.” Psychological Review, vol. 42, no. 2, Feb. 1935, pp. 186–204.

I used this article to learn about how music has evolved to become a form of expression. It’s a thorough description of the results within experimental studies regarding expression through music. Several theories have emerged over the years from the data that has been collected. It was useful to see the affect writing music has on people’s mental state.

Schäfer, Thomas, et al. “The Psychological Functions of Music Listening.” Frontiers in Psychology, U.S. National Library of Medicine, 9 Dec. 2013, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3741536/.

This source is somewhat similar to the prior scientific journal. Instead referencing research about how listening to music affects a person. There’s evidence that listening to music is often used to achieve self-awareness, regulate emotions, and as an expression of social connection.

For my senior project, I decided to visit children at the Ronald McDonald house to do a little evening activity with them as well as give them little gifts. The activities I did was bingo and a little bit of arts and crafts along with Athalia Tan. In order to do this, I held a fundraiser in school to raise money to buy the materials needed. The Ronald McDonald House was kind enough to let me borrow their bingo set, all I had to do was buy them the gift bags. Inside the gift bags, I included things I thought could be fun to play with such as bubbles, play-dough and more. The purpose of this visit, was to see how the families cope and deal with either having a family member in the hospital everyday, or constantly having to return to the hospital.

Annotated Bibliography :

Golics, Catherine Jane, et al. “The impact of patients' chronic disease on family quality of life: an experience from 26 specialties.” International Journal of General Medicine, Dove Medical Press, 2013. <www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3787893/>

After reviewing this source, I noticed that it gave me a lot of background information. I also noticed that it was an interview put into a sort of document. At first I didn’t think that this source was reliable, but once I started getting more into it, I noticed it has a lot of references. I also saw statistics, and the interview questions that was talked about. Most of the interview questions that were asked answers my capstone question on how families feel about their relatives conditions. So maybe I can use some of these questions to ask the families I get in touch with.

Good, Byron J., et al. “Impact of Illness on the Family: Disease, Illness, and the Family Illness Trajectory.” SpringerLink, Springer, New York, NY, 1 Jan. 1983, link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-1-4612-5433-1_6.

Although this source is similar to the other source, I selected this one as well because it’s the impact instead of the effect. This gives me a lot of information on how illness affects the whole family and the different ways they can cope together as a whole.

How Families Cope With Chronic Illness - Watchtower ONLINE LIBRARY, <wol.jw.org/en/wol/d/r1/lp-e/102000363.>

After reviewing this source I got more information on how families cope. I also noticed that this source puts together verses from the bible, which I think is really reliable. It also gives questions families frequently ask doctors when they find out their loved one is diagnosed with an illness. This source helps me a lot because it gives a variety of information. It talks about the many ways someone can be supportive, so this can help me on how to be supportive to the families I talk to.

“Interviewing an individual to gain a family perspective with chronic illness : a clinical demonstration.” Free Library of Philadelphia, [San Francisco, California, USA] : Kanopy Streaming, <know.freelibrary.org/Record/2103858.> https://freelibrary.kanopystreaming.com/video/interviewing-individual-gain-family-perspective-chronic-illness-clinical-demonstration

At first I didn’t think this source would be reliable. Although this interview was about a man’s experience on chronic illness, it was still able to help be gather information. While watching this interview, they introduced the skills they would be talking about which included, coping strategies and impact on family. They also explained ways someone can cope even without family members, but how to on their own. During the interview, the doctor asked the patient many questions on how he coped, and how he felt about the loss while he was a young boy. In the end, this source was pretty useful for me.

Institute of Medicine (US) Committee on Health and Behavior: Research, et al. “Individuals and Families: Models and Interventions.” Health and Behavior: The Interplay of Biological, Behavioral, and Societal Influences., U.S. National Library of Medicine, 1 Jan. 1970, www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK43749/.

This source shows how families and or the individuals that are diagnosed behave. An individual sometimes feel guilty when they’re diagnosed because of the many things their family has to go through in order to prepare for them. The many equipment they have to get, and the amount of money they have to gather.

Lawrence, Erika. “The Impact of Chronic Illness on the Family.” http://www.igliving.com/magazine/articles/IGL_2012-06_AR_The-Impact-of-Chronic-Illness-on-the-Family.pdf

This source provides informations on the different strategies to cope with a family member's illness and the impact on it. It not only gave information on how families cope, but how individuals, as well as couples together cope. It gave the many effective ways for both couples and families. A big thing I noticed, was family therapy. I could use this, to see whether the families go through family therapy together or even bring up the different ways I learned, to give them ideas on how to cope. In the end, this source was really helpful for me and I will be using it as a guideline when I visit the Ronald Mcdonald House.

Rothenberg, Michael B. “The Effect of a Child’s Chronic Illness on the Family.” Psychosocial Family Interventions in Chronic Pediatric Illness, 1982, pp. 163–178., doi:10.1007/978-1-4684-4247-2_24. <https://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-1-4684-4247-2_24>

This source is a book called “The impact of Chronic Illness on the Family”. Not only does this source show the different ways to cope, but it also shows what the impacts are for the families. Not every family goes through the same thing, so there are many different  things that could happen. This source gave me a lot of information, and was very helpful with not only coping but also the impact it has.

“Saying Goodbye.” Saying Goodbye: Coping With a Loved One's Terminal Illness, www.helpguide.org/harvard/saying-goodbye.htm.

This source provides information on how to properly say goodbye and cope on a loved ones illness. This shows grief and the challenges that the family could face. The process of coping and grieving takes awhile. There’s many steps of these things. At first I didn’t think this source was reliable, but it gave me good information on my topic.

“Signs and Symptoms of Trauma - Causes and Effects.” PsychGuides.com, www.psychguides.com/guides/trauma-symptoms-causes-and-effects/.

This source shows the many causes and effects for Trauma on illness. It gives information about the signs and symptoms to know someone is diagnosed with trauma. Trauma is a really serious thing, and this source can help me know how to properly talk to the families, just in case they are sensitive about a certain topic or thing.

“When a Loved One is Terminally Ill.” When a Loved One is Terminally Ill: Talking About Death and Making End–of–life Decisions, www.helpguide.org/harvard/dealing-with-a-loved-ones-serious-illness.htm.

This source shows how families prepare for the worst when they know their loved one is diagnosed with an illness. They have to prepare financially, physically and emotionally. This source gives the many ways family does these things. This can help me put together information on my end product or slideshow.
