Saamir Baker Capstone

Posted by Saamir Baker in Capstone · Hernandez/Hull · Wed on Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 11:00 pm
For my capstone, I decided to create the College Access Leadership (CAL) program at SLA Beeber. This program creates an additional bridge between advisories, advisors and college counselors by having a student from each senior advisory work as an intern for a band every other day. The interns or CALS do presentations for their advisories to relay information from the college office to the seniors. The reason why I decided to make this my capstone is I thought it has been a very productive program throughout my time as a CAL myself so when I discovered that SLA Beeber didn't have this program I knew that this would be the thing for me to tackle.

This is a successful peer college mentoring program that is established in Cleveland, Ohio. I wasn't sure how effective of a source this would be for me at first but then I realized that it is really effective. It shows how to really run an effective program, and gives data on their success rates running this program

"Preliminary data, conducted as part of an internal program evaluation, suggest that the SSCs are increasing the numbers of students engaging in and completing the college process: in 2009-2010, more than 70 percent of seniors at two of the sites applied to six or more colleges (there are no data yet on the third site)" This is interesting that with the implementation of this program for New York students by this school teacher the amount of applications to college went up as well as the amount of students that are even engaging in the college process that just goes to show that program implementation like these help kids out with the process.

The University of Chicago did a research on the life of a high school student and the many bumps on the road that they encounter throughout their high school career and gearing up for the college application process. This is a really great insight into seeing what resources people applying to college will need, and allows me to see how the process is different for people that aren't me or from SLA.

Final Art Jawn

Posted by Saamir Baker in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at 10:14 pm

In my final quarter of art I have completed 6 assignments, here they are in the slideshow embedded below.

In the first assignment, though I hated the website, I used it to recreate and edit photos I found online. The second assignment I made ten sketches of a portrait I found online, then drew one large portrait of my sketches. For my third assignment I made a online drawing of an island because it was something Ive never done before. For my forth assignment I made a road on a hill becaue I wanted to create an illusion of space. For my fifth assignment I did concepts of different textures then I recreated a still life that was given to us. On my final assignment I wanted to do something that represented what I learned so I did a haunted house

Advanced Essay #4 (Saamir Baker)

Posted by Saamir Baker in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 11:26 pm
I decided to talk about the things we do as American citizens that we don't think impact the world around us in a negative way but do. But we never care to actually see how and why because we are commonly stuck in our own bubble away from the world.

When you’re asked what is violence and how it is categorized nine times out of ten the first thing that would come to mind is someone punching another person in the face, a kid bullying another kid, or even in extreme cases war. Commonly after having these initial thoughts, once you have the chance to think more about it you develop stronger thought.  But have you ever thought of the violence of economic imperialism with big business? How we as Americans unknowingly inflict a violence economically on a daily basis?

Imperialism is the act of extending a country’s power and influence through diplomacy or force. According to its official definition. But economic imperialism is when a country extends its power to another in ways that affect it economically. As with recent rhetoric from our POTUS, we’ve have heard how jobs have been outsourced by American companies to be made cheaper. But we never think about what happens with these outsourced jobs or how the cheap labor affects the employees. There are lower quality workspaces for these employees to the point where suicide and death is common among these work forces, pay is abysmal and employees cannot be able to afford the products they are making. Big business colonize these third-world and low-income areas with factories with poor conditions and low income because they can get away with it.

We invest in many industries that profit off of sweatshops and one of the biggest ones is iPhone sweatshops where employees are paid as little as £1.12 per hour for things that cost over 600 dollars sometimes even as high as 1000 dollars. Employees on these wages could barely afford the cheapest iPad after two months of work. Not only is this unfair pay for how much products are sold for, but the real violence is what goes on within those sweatshops. Where underage people are employed are on a regular day, and more than 18 people are killed themselves specifically in a factory in Shenzhen. Where new “safety” precautions are nets put up all around the factory to prevent more people from killing themselves.

Spotted in pop culture and in traditions that people from all over the world have is diamonds. A reoccurring theme with Americans is that we never seem to look deeply into how we obtain these things to buy but just that they are brought to us and the way diamonds are brought to us is horrifying. The practices of mining diamonds is commonly called blood diamonds because of the amount of death and malpractices that happen while mining for these. Child labor is also another common practice within this industry. Many times boys as young as nine work with older siblings, fathers, or both to mine the diamonds that we wear on our fingers, around our necks, and on our ears. While miners obtain minimal wages for their described as back breaking work. Businesses that refine diamonds are the ones making big money by profiting off of these rare and widely demanded gems.

A movement that has gained a strong pushed but slowly has died down is the child labor movement in the Middle East. For decades children are sold by their parents to carpet makers primarily to make the highly coveted and expensive hand made carpets. These children are typically starved, mistreated, and abused while making these carpets for consumers. How does American big businesses affect this? These handmade rugs are imported and sold for hudreds sometimes thousands of dollars while these children receive none of the profits and are forced to keep creating them in a broken system.

It takes a more creative approach to think about things that are truly acts of violence or things that could cause violence that we do that impacts the world. We usually only think of war as the biggest cause for how we as American citizens create violence but the small things like what type of phone we buy, the jewelry we wear, and the things we buy to furnish our home violently affect others around the world in many different ways.

My biggest struggles with this project has been everything to do with technology. My conclusion was deleted, and as of right now I cant correctly upload any audio to submit my project. As far as everything else goes, I had a great time interviewing my stepdad and being able to look into more of his life and his personal struggles with change. I also appreciated how the way we did prework to help keep us organized that was key in making my final project.

The Economic Life of Identity

Posted by Saamir Baker in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 9:06 am
Introduction:
If I could change anything about this essay, I would develop some ideas that I talk about even more, I feel as though I could have written out my paragraphs more descriptive. My process was sort of iffy. I had a main idea of what I wanted to talk about and say but I wasnt sure how to go about it and I had troubles really establishing my ideas and writing at times but I was able to get a lot of edits and help which helped me make my essay amazing

Essay:

“You boys know if I could afford it I wouldn’t hesitate to get it. I don’t like saying no and making you sad”. This was something we always heard from our mom if we couldn’t afford any luxuries then the week we would be facing was going to be a tight one.

“We know mom”, I knew majority of our money had went to bills and food. We did need the essentials after all. While sometimes we do live paycheck to paycheck, we aren’t poor it’s just our bills that decide to try to pull us under for a few moments. But somehow we make it through. We budget and save, budget and save to make sure we have enough money to do things we want. But it's not just me who goes through life like this. There's articles that talk about classes in america, particularly the article “The Secret Shame of Middle Class Americans”. A quote that showed how this issue of funds beintg drained is something that many middle class families is supported with this statement “I know what it is like to have to juggle creditors to make it through a week. I know what it is like to have to swallow my pride and constantly dun people to pay me so that I can pay others.”. When families like mine go through this, it creates an extra drive in children and teens, like me, to make sure they don’t go through what their parents go through, and be able to afford what they want. So they can be more successful and have a better life for themselves and their future families.

When children that are economically disadvantaged, sometimes they face extra walls and hoops they must climb. In a quote also in the article “The Shame of Middle-Class Americans”, it says “I know what it is like to be down to my last $5—literally—while I wait for a paycheck to arrive, and I know what it is like to subsist for days on a diet of eggs.”. While not everyone has to survive off of eggs, and there are different alternatives still not being able to have a fridge with varieties of food affect the way of life for children. While all is bad in the current time however, families and specifically children that go through this gain more resilience towards issues they may experience later in life and know how to solve things (like this) better. And because they’ve already experienced this stuff they will know and be able to handle situations along the lines better. Which influences how they handle money to be able to continue to eat and affects their money situations, and ability to stay afloat.

“Saamir I hope you know you’re gonna have to work to help pay for college right?”

“I know mom, I’ll do what I have to”

“I’m just letting you know because money will be tight.”

“And college is expensive, I know. But I want a better life, we both want me to have a better one so it will just have to happen.”

Commonly I have these discussions with my mom about paying and affording college when I’m with her. We have established that we aren’t able to go over $30,000 but even something close to that is somewhat pushing it. When I talk to my dad however, he doesn’t have much interest in budgeting for college and max tuitions. In his eyes he only cares about it being cheap and would rather have me go to CCP. But will support whichever choice I make for my future. Both of my parents, obviously, are different people and have different ways with parenting. They’re separated so they have different financial capabilities, and responsibilities. In some ways this is good because if one parent can’t afford something I can ask the other, there’s more Christmas presents. While I have these different aspects of living different financial living environments, I reflect on what life is like in both environments what it is like to live in different neighborhoods and realize I want better for myself. Both of my parents are right below middle-middle class if not bordering that but, after living this way for 16 years I know life would be better by working harder to achieve my goals in life, and be above what my parents economic status is. I know the struggles of sometimes living paycheck to paycheck to being spoiled is sometimes. A life of financial unpredictability is a life I want to strive not to have. Although we all have many aspects that influence our identities the undermining one of economic status shapes our drive, sometimes what opportunities we have, and experiences we can have. Though economic status is a touchy subject it influences our lives in many ways that we can and can't explain.

Moana Review

The movie “Moana” is Disney's newest Princess to grace the silver screen and there has been a lot of excitement drawn to her movie due to it being placed in the islands of Polynesia and having another woman POC. Historically, Disney princesses main goals have gravitated towards having a prince charming and living happily ever after, but Disney has had a good track record as of recent of allowing their princesses to have their own story arc that isn’t solely about having a prince or man to be loved by. Will they continue that trend? The main question here is does the movie pass the two feminist tests? We are here to find that out.

“Moana” is not only the name of our movie but also the name of our character and we find ourselves in the middle of a conflict not too long after the movie has started. Moana loves the ocean but her father wants her to stay focused on taking over the throne once it’s her time to become the first woman chief of her Polynesian tribe. A conflict that fuels the movie all the way to its peak. She finds her island to be slowly dying and has decided to find out why after a touching moment with her grandmother, the main person who has encouraged her love of water and venturing out of the reef. A rule that hasn’t been broken by the tribe up until now.

In her adventure past the reef she meets Maui, a historical demigod to her people who is responsible for her island dying because he stole the heart of a god. Maui has an interesting backstory that is usually more than that meets the eye but it isn’t thrown at you right away. He matches that of a person who is slow to trust and reveal their past, so to stay true to his character it is like he slowly trusts the audience to reveal who he truly is. The two have not quite an instant connection but grow to have chemistry that is hard to match in this movue.

From the stunning visuals that this movie proudly shows to the interesting story it tells, “Moana” is a must see for everyone. Not only does the Mako Mori test not stand a chance towards it with there being a lot more than one female character, this is also a movie that is centered around a woman who never gives up but has a male partner and isn’t just in the movie to support his cause. It is actually her who is determined to get him to support the cause and adventure they both share. One of the historically harder feminist movie tests the “Bechdel test” can barely ride “Moanas” coat tails either because of the many scenes of women empowering Moana to take her adventure, to not be afraid and to never give up. Her conversations with her grandmother were always my favorite part because she always had no hint of negativity for her. She always encouraged her to be great, and do what she was destined to do. When Moana was ready to give up it was her grandmother who was there to turn her around. And with the new feminist test the “Saa test”, Moana smashes that test with the evidence shown above that it is also no match. “Moana” has been a hit in the box office, has smashed even the hardest of feminist movie tests, has an amazing story, and some of the best animation of the year to boot. There is little to no reason to not see this movie and I recommend it to everyone and thing who can either hear, see or both.

Q1 Artist Slideshow

Posted by Saamir Baker in Advanced Art · Hull · x1 Band on Sunday, November 6, 2016 at 8:24 pm
I am most proud of my ceiling tile by far. Ever since freshman year I never thought I would be able to create a ceiling tile yet I have finally achieved. I decided to add to the collection of superhero tiles and add the flash since in my opinion he is a very underrated superhero. I wanted to go for his classic design, but make the red a deep shade since the shade of red changes depending on the designer.

For my self-portrait, I tried to free-hand draw myself at first but that turned out to be terrible, since I am not very good at that type of drawing so I decided to trace a picture of myself on the white board, I chose to attempt to shade in the parts of my face that were covered by shadows in my picture so I could make almost an exact replica.

Advanced Essay #2: Getting Lost in Walmart

Posted by Saamir Baker in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · C Band on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 2:31 pm
Introduction:
This assignment challenged me to be more aware to grammar mistakes I usually make and correct them. But it also help me assess what a more balanced essay can be that has not only a lot of dialogue but also has a rich story to tell while still being unique in its own way.

Essay:

Getting Lost in Walmart

“Do you remember where you last saw your mom, son?”

“Yes, but she’s not there anymore”

“Let’s walk around and try to find her, okay?”

We made three laps around the entire Walmart, but to no avail. We couldn't find her. I can’t say I wasn’t used to this though. Walmart was a consistent trip for my mom and I. Getting lost in the wonderland of secondhand products and reduced oatmeal was an everyday thing.

in the store. It was something that was a daily occurrence in Walmart world. We get there, she usually says

“Don’t touch nothing, don’t look at nothing, cause

you not getting nothing.”

But our compromise was always,

“Can I go to the toy aisle?’ Or

“Can I look at the videogames?”

It was something that always got me lost once I tried to come back to her, when I became bored of looking at the toys and videogames I knew I wouldn't get. I still always found it amazing to see how many toys and videogames there were in just one store.

This time on our trip to Walmart, I begged and begged my mom to let me go to the toy aisle because we were doing boring clothes shopping. And finally I got my wish of being able to go but not before I was given very strict instructions.

“I will be in this area clothes shopping. If you don't see me here, then I am in the dressing room. Don't get lost this time.”

I nodded my head feverishly and darted off to the toy aisle. I was finally able to go off and be on my own journey, discovering the world of Walmart and seeing what new things were in stock. In some ways I was proud that even though I usually got lost on my adventure, I was trusted to do it alone. Something many kids couldn't do.

As I navigated through the aisles to my destination, I had to quickly plot out if I would go to the toys or videogames first. I could go to the land of videogames first, and stare in awe at the treasure beyond the glass barrier. Or should I just go to toy island and run through and discover its many treasures. To someone as young as I was it was a huge decision. But I decided to best way to keep my adventure long and entertaining was go to the land of videogames first.

When I first arrived there, I gazed at just how many there were in awe. I walked up and down the aisle gawking at each game. I did two or three more wraparounds before I decided it was time to go to toy island. There I got to run up and down wayyy more aisles, and inspected many different toys. Even the girl toys when I got bored! It was an amazing time to be able to be free and go on my adventure by myself but now I was ready to go back to my mom.

“MOMMY WHERE ARE YOU?”

I couldn't find my mom anywhere! She had said she would be around in the clothes area but yet she was nowhere to be found. I searched and searched for her before I decided I should go on another journey by myself to find her. It would be the most epic journey ever conducted in Walmart, and most of all it would will be done by one person. I scoured each island of Walmart. From the land of food to the realm of pets supplies, I desperately searched for my mom. I just couldn't find her anywhere. I even took another detour where the toys were before a Walmart worker asked if I was lost. At that point I knew my adventure was over and said

“Yes”.

As sad as I was to see my adventure come to an end, I still had to go home after all with my mommy.

“How long after you been lost for?”

“I don't know, not super long…”

At this point I had the entire system they would do whenever there was a lost child. The workers always asked

“what is your moms name?”

Then they would page through out Walmart for my mom to come to the front to pick me up. After once or twice she was never relieved that much to get me. We both just got used to it. This time she wasn't too happy.

“Saamir, I told you where I would be this time!” My mom said with a huge frown

“I went there! You said the clothing area and that's where I went.”

“Did you check the dressing room?”

“Umm… I didn't hear that part. I thought you meant outside of the dressing room.”

“See, next time you should listen better.”

“Sorry mom”

Throughout my story, I had the somewhat unique experience of going on my own adventure despite it being in just Walmart. But my adventure would have my cut short if I had used the literary lense of listening better to my mom and paying attention to the fact she would be in the dressing room. But at least me being lost was routine for us , so there was no panicing.

Saamir Baker Q.3 BM

Posted by Saamir Baker in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 5:30 pm

From an early point in mankind’s rules have become a staple to our community, environment, and lifestyle. Its like,  Humans create rules, and laws to create some sort of order in their lives, and can keep in reach to control. Without them  many people wouldn’t have order. We’ve all wondered why we as humans have rules that are in place to follow. If we should bend, or break the rules for something or someone, for that matter, but usually this is for a gain of some sort.

The book “Lord of the flies” takes place on an island that had not yet been populated, until the shipwrecked boys came,. They were very lawless.  From a third-person’s view, we follow Ralph as he ventures through this trial with the other boys who are shipwrecked. In this story we witness many grabs at power of the island, but more importantly how a society that tries to become organized, with rules crumble and become lawless. On page 58, of “Lord of the flies”, by William Golding,  we see the beginning stages of the rules Ralph and the group have set in place start to crumble. As people start to not follow them, or rebel, against them. A quote from Ralph says “ We’ve got to have rules and obey them. After all, we’re not savages. We’re English, and the English are the best at everything.”. This quote stands out to me mostly for the simple fact that, like mentioned before, rules will create a structure to their lives that will let them live without (for the most part) a worry or care. It is also intriguing how they play the fact that they are English as a key that they should follow these rules because they are “the best at everything” and as a result if they aren’t following these rules well then they aren’t being a proper Englishman. Just as it is a stereotype in popular culture nowadays that people who are English, are very proper and nice. It’s almost as if, Ralph used great debate skills  to convince them to follow the rules and not get out of line. As a way to assert dominance and stay in power of everyone on the island. As referring back to the thesis of needing rules to not only have some structure in his life but also so he can have a grip of power. Not only on his life, but the people around him lives.

While of course a book created to  depict fiction of any scenario, there are real-life examples of not only places crumbling from having no rules, but also having rules that are either so constantly broken or just not followed its as if they don't have any. And in some places they don't. For great example, Somalia is known as the lawless country. Dating back to the time that a blackhawk had fallen there, this nation has had a big problem with reestablishing a government or having any laws/rules to have citizens follow. As a result of having no rules to follow, the country has taken a turn for the worse. Civil war has broken out but slowly decreased but citizens commonly deal with problematic gangs and on a large scale pirates, and not Black beard I mean modern day pirates, which have plagued their coastlines. This country alone is one huge example of how being a lawless society can be more of a plague. This country also refers back to the quote in the beginning of the essay, that trying to be an anarchist community doesn’t ever work out for the better so we have rules in place. And sadly there are no rules in place to help progress this country, despite the many efforts that were previously attempted. This connects with people we believe, rules are in place to enforce and help. That rules are a blanket that keeps societies warm and provide shelter for them. But maybe the people of Somalia prefer to be lawless after so long. It’s become a new way of life that cannot be broken. The testament to people who believe anarchy is best that people should create a way of life that THEY would prefer to live in by the way they want. Wherever you may stand on this, both sides of the wall can be heavily brooded about.

Have you ever made a game with your friends? Or decided to play something like cops and robbers, and hide and seek because it was boring. There were almost always rules involved with these games to create a structure within. Now think, was there ever a time when your friend bended the rules to fit their needs? When one bended the rules so badly usually it is because they don't have any power in their hands. They can’t control what happens so they try to overthrow the rules and the person or people who made them. Like we saw in “Lord of the Flies” when Jack tried to overthrow Ralph. Do you often wonder if rules are pointless if people do infact bend them or break them. Maybe the Somalis are right for having no laws so nobody can attempt to control anything.

Every so often, like somewhat the case with Somali, citizens or settlers, begin to break rules and sometimes rebel against them. This is the case somewhat with this next quote from the novel, and it says… “ Hands were reaching for the conch in the light of the setting sun,. He held on and lept on the trunk. “All of this I meant to say. Now I’ve said it. You voted me for chief. Now you do what I say.””. This quote demonstrates a person, higher up, etc, losing his control on a group of people and is reacting because of it. Ralph doesn’t like the fact people are going against the rules that are established, to stay in control, and displays that in the quote. It may also be the fact he doesn't feel as though their, for the sake of it having some type of name, tribe was structured enough for his liking. Relating back to the thesis that rules are in place to give someone power and structure, and when Ralph was losing one or both of those he displayed how disgruntled he was.

While rules have always provided a structure in our lives that a lot of people need. They also employ an act of control over us. A lot of times this goes unnoticed. Do you ever wonder if we will become a dystopian society under the heavy pressures of rules, or become another version of Somali where no rules apply to anyone where we live a lawless life?

Trash

Posted by Saamir Baker in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 7:19 am

You know, when I was made I never thought my job was… important. I thought I wasn’t making much of a difference in the world but really I was making a huge one to my community. I mean it could have been a lot worse, I have brothers who live in the hood part of the city, and cousins who only live for a few days before they’re hit by a car, or vandalized. It’s a rough world for trash cans, in this world.  I could’ve had it a lot worse but somehow I ended up here! In the cleanest area of the city. I have one of me on every street corner and they help me out a lot. Every time someone throws something in my I feel like, I'm helping the community a little bit more…

OKAY! Before we get some more into that let’s talk about something different. Just like those people who just passed us I HATE it when people use my name as an insult. See my parents weren’t too original with my name, I am literally Trash the trash can this is my full name. So when somebody says “Oh my god you're absolute trash, or you look like trash.” it pisses me off, my name in the trash community is a strong name. Parents who have high hopes for their new trash cans produced name them trash if they KNOW they can get the job done. If I said “You’re absolute Sara today, or you look like Jessica, or even your outfit is so John” HOW WOULD YOU FEEL? I live to help keep the streets clean. My friends are the trash cans who are on different corners around me, or near me. From the day I was placed here I worked to help the community, even when I didn’t want to at first. After being here for ten years I think it’s time I got some recognition and not have my name used as an insult. I work so hard to make sure your community isn’t filled with litter. Yes litter because us trash cans don’t like to use the word trash to talk about filth. We work hard, I used to hated what I was made for but now I love it! I love it when my area of the city is nice and clean. The trash moto is “A clean life is a healthy life”. I just wish people would realize how much I care about the wellbeing of the community.

Y’know I just want to be recognized for what I do, what we do as a race. We enjoy being filled with litter, and looking around to see that our communities are clean. I just want people to know that we try our bests to be green, and eco friendly. Without us, litter would be all over your yards, inside your homes, and line streets like an army. People would be living in filth. It’s a hard world for all of us, we just try our best to do what we were made for. I know we aren’t the greenest solution to how litter is handled but I try to be no matter what. I just want the work I do to be appreciated and noticed. I want the work that my family does to be appreciated and noticed. We are essential to a clean community and I think it’s time we are recognized.

Freeze framed over a barrier (Saamir Baker)

Posted by Saamir Baker in English 2 - Pahomov - E on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 6:48 pm

“Teylor come here.” Kwame called out

“What do you want?” Teylor said irritatedly

“Listen to how he says this line in our poem”

In my mind, I think I'm saying mother and brothers perfectly. It’s been the same way I always pronounce stuff with a ‘th’ in it mo-ther, bro-ther. How do I say it differently?

“I have two younger broders and i am scared for my moder, I don’t want to see her digging her sons in the grave because a cop thought the black brush in his hand was a gun

I want to be able prove that I will live after 25”

“You see how he says mother and brother?”

“No, Saamir say it again. But this time just say mother and brother.” Teylor said softly

“Moder, broder. What am I saying wrong?”

“You say it with a d, instead of a th. Make your tongue move like this when you say it”

“Mother? Brother?”

“Yeah like that say it like that!”

I took a lot of pride in the fact that I learned how to say two words the correct way almost instantly. I tried to say them again but again to my agony I said ‘Moder and broder’ again! I never knew I said it with a ‘d’. It was kind of upsetting to me that no one ever decided to tell me about the way I spoke.

Though I knew deep in my heart this wasn’t new at all to me, but it still stung. Ever since kindergarten I had a bad reading and speech problem. Teachers thought I would be another statistic and never succeed, but somehow with all of their doubts, I ended up at SLA. My mom fought to get me help with learning how to speak properly because she couldn’t understand what I was saying to her. I couldn’t pronounce my own name properly, so everyone called me Sa-mir instead of Saa-mir, and it became my new name. This was my secondary name because I wasn’t able to speak properly. Even to this day, because I am so used to it, I let people call me Samir.

My school's speech woman, who came to help me, supposedly, would never show up at first. She downright refused to help me after a month of being with me because she thought I was in her mind fine, though no one still couldn’t understand what I said. It took my mom threatening to call her boss if she didn't help me. To this day, I only remember her helping me once. That one time was in the middle of class, and was spent talking to me for only 5 minutes before leaving. Sometimes I wonder what if she actually gave me the help and compassion a real teacher would have gave me. How would I be able to speak now? Would I be able to say th words with no problem?

Later on in life, the next school I moved onto helped me learn how to read to the point of me exceeding my classmates; through a lot of hard work and determination in more ways than one. As I grew up I learnedto speak and read better but still I had a small session everyday where I got pulled out of class to learn how to speak. The teacher I had was very good at teaching me I still remember her lessons she gave me, and how much she beamed with passion. Her and everyone else in that school knew I could succeed, and helped me do it. Which is why it came at such a surprise when Teylor (now called Ty) and Kwame pointed out I wasn’t able to pronounce ‘th’ words. It turned out that even my girlfriend knew I couldn't pronounce words even further than just the ‘th’ words, which came as a shock to me. I really thought I was pass all of my struggles as a person who couldn’t speak properly.

It disappointed me, and made me lose a lot of self-confidence. I thought I had been progressing further  and becoming a better speaker . I really took pride in the fact that I had overcome such a huge barrier speaking wise, just to find out I was jumping over it in slow motion. It was never fully overcome to begin with, and it was really disheartening. What made it even worse was the fact nobody told me that what I was saying was wrong.. After Ty told me how to pronounce words properly I went straight to work. I desperately tried to change the way I spoke, but I couldn’t. It was my signature flair to the way I spoke.. I started to accept the fact I said things differently. I learned that I shouldn’t beat myself up on something that was just me, it was just something that is me.

While I was getting the tools I needed to become a better speaker, I learned how to read. I went from barely being able to read a Dr. Seuss book, to reading full novels. Reading became my hell when I couldn’t read, but once I learned how to read, it became somewhere where I can escape. I credit the amazing teachers I had that did not make me feel like I was dumb. They gave me confidence in myself as a reader, while giving confidence in my speaking ability. I also credit reading so many books to helping me learn how to speak better. Since, the two go hand in hand.

I soon realized that though I hadn’t overcome a barrier in my life. I had overcame the reading barrier in my life. I was once behind a grade or two behind everyone else in my grade, to becoming a front-runner in my classroom. Advancing from basics to advanced, with no pun intended, and reading at a level two or three grades pass my own. Scoring a junior reading level on tests. It made me proud that I had overcome the hurdle by a whole football field and exceeded that expectation, while accepting I still had more to go with my other ones. Because isn’t life but one big challenge? We all face multiple challenges in our lives. So I learned to look forward to every challenge from that day on.

Reconstruction Era Visuals Project (Saamir Baker)

Mound Bayou Looking For Residents
Two elements I decided to go with for this poster is a beige color with not alot of images because when people placed ads around this time very few if any contained ads and they used big letters for their openers so thats what i decided to go with. This matters because Mound Bayou was a big step for black people and proved to everyone who didn't think that they could run a town properly that they were wrong and that they could, and writing an ad for it showed that blacks could also read and write which is something else whites did not want them to do along wiith running a town.,,, So the visual I have created shows African American history because it marks one of the first black founded towns in America

Q3 Reflection (S. Baker)

Posted by Saamir Baker in Art - Freshman - Hull - y1 on Thursday, April 9, 2015 at 12:21 pm
1. Back wall: 20/20. I think I drew the back wall pretty accurately.
Side wall: 18/20. My side walls are a little off to me but I still think they're accurate.
Ceiling: 20/20. I think my ceiling looks great but I think it's off a bit.
Floor: 15/70. My floor has a nice outline but looks bland.
Table/Chair: 12/20. My table looks great but the stool looks weird.

2. I would change the way my stool and table looks. Since it isn't a really good representation of the two. I would also take more time trying to make my lines persice and not have so many erased lines visable on the paper.

3. I think Xavier's drawing is very nice looking. I like the way that his lines are dark it pops out to me. To me it looks like he took his time on doing it and that he tried to make sure everything about it was correct.

4. One point perspective focuses on the perspective of one point. And that making a drawing based of one point is challenging but rewarding when you get an accurate drawing

Net Neutrality Blog

Posted by Saamir Baker in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - y2 on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 9:26 pm
As I reflect on net neutrality I feel like we should retain our internet given right to get all of our bits at the same pace. But, that is just my opinion in a simple form. Over the past couple of years our Net Neutrality has been tampered with. Yet 8 out of 10 people don't know this nor do they actually know about Net Neutrality. Crazy right? So this is my opinionated article on Net Neutrality.
From personal experience I know that Comcast has been slowing down my internet which is against Net Neutrality. Net Neutrality is to protect us from having to pay to get faster internet. I say to this company that it is a disgrace to even do this to consumers, and worse of all they, along with other service providers, slow down Netflix. They slow down Netflix because they are loosing money because they usually also provide cable and people have stopped buying cable. All in all it makes me just disapointed that Net Neutrality rules are still in place until proven otherwise by the FCC, and they are already selling premium internet boxes to get ¨faster internet¨"which is what we had before. Its plain old disgusting to even do this and this should be taken off the market because it is violating multiple rules.
But as my personal blog post comes to an end I ask that you keep yourselves updates on all the happenings of Net Neutrality because, this will affect generations to come. Try to sign petitions that you come across that best help your stance. Though I would say you vote against big corporations slowing down our internet. Since that means laggy Call of Duty, or slow Netflix. Which is what I know the average American citizen does not want.

Saamir Slide Pt.2 Revised slide

Posted by Saamir Baker in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - y2 on Friday, December 12, 2014 at 10:09 am

PT.2:
This time I got a different picture for my background because the previous picture pixelated when it was my background and that would be a design flaw in my billboard. I also changed my logo so it could be transparent and not be out of place from the rest of my billboard and blend in more with my theme. I also rearranged where I put my basic title ¨Running Man¨ on the right side and put my logo on the left side to give my bilboard a better balance while still keeping it very simple, professional, and empowering. The main things I kept the same was my color scheme and my quote.

Saamir's Slide show

Posted by Saamir Baker in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - y2 on Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at 10:24 am
My design consists of a more grainy theme that simplicity captures your attention. The quotes and name of the slide is supposed to make you sit down and think about what is really being stated on it, and stick with you. It also shows that the runnner is really dedicated to obviously running and doesn't flaunt that he runs, yet is proud enough to tell people he is apart of the running community. The things that influenced my decision making the most was which cultures and aspects that I do make me the happiest, and since I love running and is one of my favorite past times. At first I thought about dedicating the whole billboard to a specific run that I did but that wouldn't hold true to the me truly as a runner and all of the events I've done so I decided to go for a more general approach to everything.
