Post For Change

Posted by Pierce Luck in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, May 31, 2012 at 12:18 pm

This is my post for change for Animal Cruelty. Since I deeply care about this subject I wanted to do something to put the word out there.  In my last two blogs I explained serious cases of animal cruelty and types of animal cruelty. I explained how abuse was not the only kind of abuse and that neglect was a serious from of abuse as well. What I did for my change is that I made a video/commercial to put the word out that there are animals that need help. My video is for animals in the SPCA who needs to be adopted. My video explains that you can help by adopting or donating which could easily save the lives of these animals in need. My plan was to show not only put this video on the SLA (ScienceLeadershipAcademy) home page but, to show it to my advisory to further spread the word on Animal Abuse.

I just wanted to say that you can make a difference in animal lives and that if you see abuse don’ t be scared to report it because that’s why animals are abused.

The Pro-Choice Movement's Involvement In Politics: Part Two

Posted by Max Amar-Olkus in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 11:33 am

This is my second blog post regarding the topic of the Pro-Choice Movement’s involvement in politics. First off, I would like to state that the point of this blog entry is “opinion.” If I happen to offend anyone, I am deeply sorry. I have done more research on this topic and I have found many interesting tidbits of information.

In my opinion abortion and contraception should not be made illegal. There are things that are illegal that people still manage to do (i.e. Drugs, dog fights, jaywalking, etc) but because they are illegal, they do these things in an unsafe manner. If abortion were criminalized, people would still get them because they are necessary in most cases. I learned that 13% of pregnancy-related deaths worldwide are related to complications in unsafe abortions. According to Planned Parenthood, 1 in 3 women in the U.S. Have had an abortion by the age of 45.

Some people believe abortion and contraception is a mortal sin because of their religion. In 1930 the Roman Catholic Church banned all “artificial” means of contraception like condoms, diaphragms, and cervical caps. According to the Church, tampering with the "male seed" was equivalent to murder. Not all people that are Pro-Life have had those opinions their whole life. In my research the most notable change of opinion was that of former senator Rick Santorum. In a statement made in a 1995 interview Santorum says, "I was basically pro-choice all my life, until I ran for Congress... But it had never been something I thought about." Santorum is now one of the strongest opposers of abortion and contraception. “Santorum is a product of the polarization of our politics," said Pat Ewing, the former campaign manager for Senator Harris Wofford, whom Santorum defeated in the 1994 election. "He has taken advantage of it. He understands it. And he will take a position to benefit himself to get a small group of people to love him adamantly. His personality hasn't evolved, his politics has."

People can change their opinions if they think it’ll make them more popular. Not just about their views on abortion and contraception. Anything.

In my opinion, saying “Pro-Choice” is kind of pretentious. It may sound harsh but at the end of the day the reality of it is that you are “pro-abortion.” This doesn’t mean that you want to abort every child that is conceived. It just means that you support women's right to choose what they want to do with their body. In many cases, abortions happen because of rape or incest. If it is your opinion that abortion and contraception shouldn’t even be used in these situations then I guess our beliefs conflict.

Through out my research I’ve been asking myself, “why would people be against this?” I totally understand the religious aspect but if you oppose abortion and contraception for a reason other than that, I’m left confused. In my next blog post I have to talk about change. I plan on looking into people’s opinions on this topic to enrich my knowledge.

Human Trafficking Blog Post #1

Posted by Sabian Rosales in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 2:29 pm

Human Trafficking and the stories behind it.

Human Trafficking is a horrible thing and it’s happens to poor people who have dreams of going to another country. So they talk to some person who owns this “transporting business” and then the poor person gets taken to another place where they work and get paid below the minimum wage. Simply to put it, they are trapped there for most of their life because the owners destroy their Passport and Id. Then they are put to work past the limit of human capabilities and they are fed food that probably doesn’t taste good.

The continuation of Human Trafficking is terrible and it’s all done for profit. All this does is destroy the migrants from other countries and towns who just what to support their families and instead they get captured and worked to the edge of death. Children and especially women are sold into prostitution and are tortured by their Slave Masters; I think the weight of this subject is a lot to handle but even harder to talk about. Can we stop this or will it continue to go on for many more years? Can you stop it?

Victims of Human Trafficking are being shown the dark parts of the world; children, women and other victims are being terrified and the growing fear of never seeing your family again. The Numerous Words of Human Trafficking are hard to look at but they all say the same thing, Human Trafficking has to stop!

Victims of Human Trafficking are looking for Help but the locations of these enslavement places are hidden from the outside world and lets hope that this modern day Slavery stops and be ended before any more family are disconnected from each other.

The Shackles that hold these victims captive are locked with a key, a key of despair. They take away the victims belongings, demand money, work them half to Death and worst of all, they keep the victims separated from their families. Lives are at stake here and I don’t see the rates going down. People are becoming Victims because they are lied to about having a new life in another country. Victims are dying because of this; the Slave Traders do this all for profit and do not even care about the victims, all they care about is the profit and themselves.

Will This Ever Stop Happening?

Interesting Quotes and Facts

A senior U.N. official says that as many as 2.4 million people may be victims of human trafficking worldwide at any given time.

You and The World: Teenage Obesity Blog Post #1

Posted by Liza Cohen in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 2:12 pm

Hello readers! My name is Liza Cohen and I am a student at Science Leadership Academy. I am writing this blog post to inform you and everyone else about teenage obesity, why it is important, the effect it has on us, and how we can prevent it from happening.

The topic that I want people to become more aware about is child obesity. Whether it is a young toddler, growing child, or teenager; this problem has continued to full extent. The percent of overweight children has increased since the 1970's. The age range for obesity is ranged around 6 to 17 year olds. That is a wide variety of children, which more than 1 out of 5 are struggling with this issue. Small things like lacking of exercise and a poor diet can cause obesity. To elaborate on the numbers, I want to compare obesity then to how it is now. In the 1900’s, obesity was less of an issue than it is now. In fact, in the 1900’s being stood out for being overweight was a good thing. I say this because when you were seen overweight, it meant you had wealth, to afford food. However, things are the complete opposite now. Obesity for anyone, especially teenagers is an issue. There are medical, physical, and emotional problems all due to being obese. Just because the causes and perspectives on obesity has changed, doesn’t make it less important now as it was then.

A lot of you might be curious on what exactly is obesity. Mind you, gaining a few extra pounds here and there is not considered obesity. Gaining weight and being overweight is not considered obesity until the person their weight is over 10% of what their proper weight should be for their age and height. Obesity is just a stronger more serious word for being overweight. There is almost an unlimited amount of proof to show that this issue needs to be put to a stop.

Now that you know what exactly obesity is, and how big of a role it plays in people’s lives, I want to inform you on why I care particularly about this topic. This world issue is important to me because it is an issue that I am constantly surrounded by. I have gotten to the point where I feel I should look more into this issue and see what I can do to prevent it from happening continuously. Another reason why this issue is important to me is because I personally can relate to it. I am not overweight, or even on the road to obesity. However, I am very cautious of my body and how I can keep my body in good shape. If I learn more about obesity I can help others and even myself from letting it happening to us.

In my upcoming blog posts, you will get a bigger taste on my perspective on teenage obesity and how I can prevent it from happening!

This is a picture of the overweight and obese people in several countries. This image is important because it shows that obesity reflects on more than one audience. I wanted to reach out and show you that whoever is reading this, obesity can effect you too, wherever you are in the world.

STDs or STIs: The New Crisis Of Today's Teens Blog Post#1

Posted by Betty Louis in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 11:23 am

In my English class we are focusing on a topic we are intrigued by, want to shout to the world to, and make a difference/change about it. We thought with our potential its about time that we put our voice out there and speak! Let the world hear the voice and see what really goes on in the mind of the educated youth in Philadelphia. This project is called “You and The World” where you develop a passion among a issues that you want to teach others about leading them to what your ideas ad thoughts about what we can do to change such a problem. I am here today to talk about the issues of STDs or if you prefer STIs.

I’m pretty sure almost everyone knows what an STD (STI) is if not an STD is a sexually transmitted disease or infections. Which you can easily catch if you are sexually active in any way with a partner that has the disease. I believe that in high school or near the end of middle school they have a health class that teach about these things but I also believe that there are some teens that don’t quite pay attention or take this issues seriously. That really bothers me. Next thing you know because they didn’t pay attention or cared they end up gaining such a disease. Of course they will have to deal with the consequences, suffer the pain that comes there way and live with regret.

The big issue that I have with this is that 1 in 4 teens between the ages of 14-19 have STD. It’s just not right! Hearing about this all I can think is why? Why is such a thing even exposed to us teens who should be focusing on more important things like what to do next with our lives not just to throw it away like some wasted piece of trash. It is said that if you are infected with such a disease the symptoms might show up right away or they just might show up in a week, month or even years depending on what kind you have. That’s why all mostly when people talk about STDs they always included getting tested as an option because you may think that your partner isn’t infected but you really never know until you see the real truth in reliable papers. Symptoms for both women and men are pain when you pee, around the butt hole, mouth, or private parts the inhabitations of bumps, blisters and such. If not treated or taking care of this STI can cause death I can’t imagine someone who could be my little sister/brother or older sister/brother having to go through this painful experience. I believe that this must come to an end and be solved for the sake of the generations that will soon be coming into this world. What do you think about this?
