Desmond O'Donovan, Q2 Art Portfolio

Posted by Desmond O'Donovan in Senior Art - Hull - D on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 8:57 am

This quarter I did a lot of nature related drawings. It started with the Fern drawing. I like how it turned out, but hated drawing. I have to draw plants a lot for the backgrounds of my animal portraits, and I find them tedious to draw. Ferns especially, are just a long continuous pattern. The block print was supposed to be nature inspired, so I picked an animal to use for y negative space drawing and print. I decided to choose an animal that could be well represented by negative space. a pure black raven worked well.

The Golden Ratio Collage was my favorite piece to draw, and I think it is the best one that I did. I've never done one before, but I really grew to like drawing patterns and shapes. It was hard, but fun to create. A lot of these pieces were pretty difficult to execute, but I appreciated the challenge. I also liked experimenting with color for this one, because this was the only drawing that I did in class this quarter that used color.

Q2-Artist Portfolio-Lindsey Jones

Posted by Lindsey Jones in Senior Art - Hull - D on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 at 9:58 am

When creating these pieces, I wanted to stay true to what I like but also combine with something new. One of themes we had to stick to was “nature” and we had to make almost everything according to that.

Apart of my style is keeping everything as consistent and simple as possible. I only want to do just enough so that the audience will know what I’ve made. I add details later on in order to give the piece context and a voice. This can applied to pretty much all of the pieces made. The fern drawing was simple, but also showed a part of the fern we usually don’t see. Most ferns are large and under soil, but I wanted to show the fern at it’s roots. For the golden ratio drawing/collage, I made an elephant that followed the ratio (its less obvious because it isn’t a collage and there are no guidelines). The negative space drawing, block print, and final piece all are centered on emphasizing the animal and color. These pieces means a lot to me because they were thoughtfully put together and are something that I’d never done before. I was able to use my love for bright and eccentric colors, draw in my style, but also do something different.

Senior Art was a blast for me so far, especially with the new assignments and art mediums. I can’t wait to try more and learn new things.

Q2 Senior Art Portfolio

Confidence is key. You may start out completely hating what you do. You might rip it up, throw it away, and try to start over again. It doesn’t mean you’re a bad artist, or your work isn’t the absolute best it can be. You have to keep trying. It won’t always come out perfect in the end, but it’s how you see it is completely different than how it may perceived in the outside world. I had a lot of trouble this time around, because I constantly kept doubting what I could do. In the end, creating art shouldn't be about how much skill you have. It should be fun. You shouldn't stress so much about how amazing it turns out, because overall, being able to create something that others could enjoy is actually pretty epic.

Quarter 2 Senior Art

Posted by Jacklyn Middleswarth in Senior Art - Hull - D on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 at 8:54 pm

This quarter in Senior Art was very different, and for me I struggled, which I was not used to. Normally, I dive deep in the projects we are given, and while it takes a while for the product to be finished, I am ultimately satisfied with my work. This quarter the projects were harder, and weren't the same style of art I usually do, so I was not as satisfied with my work as I usually am. This type of art took a lot more patience which I have to come to accept to do more often.
The theme of art that I chose to do with these projects I wanted to be detailed, but also be interesting to the eye. I wanted something to look at, so while I was going through the process of these projects which was boring to me, I wanted to the end result to be enjoyable. One piece that really resonates with me is the block print. The cherry tree and the Japanese style house resonates with me because I signify peace and tranquility with that, and I have been trying to become those two words. I need more of those two things in my life.

Q2 Art Portfolio

For quarter two we took things a little slow and we didn’t have as much work as we did the first quarter. Instead we learned and practiced some new techniques, including collaging, block printing and sketching using math. It was fun to go out my art comfort zone, it got me working harder and putting in more effort. Besides art history we have a mini lesson in the history of art and music experimenting with different artist and how the vibes of the music affected the way we worked in class. We did have our silly days but it was fun learning about older artist from the 80’s- 90’s.

The most challenging project this quarter was the fern, because there’s a lot of details in each leaf and that takes a lot of time, energy and patience, which is something I don’t have. When it comes to art if it’s not my way or something I’m good at stray against it because it’s out of my comfort zone, and I’m not really an artist. There were times where I did want to give up and not finish the drawing because it felt like the leaves were never ending. I would finish one and realise I had like 20 more to finish. It was never ending and I really really wanted to give and chalk the whole thing. In the end I’m glad I didn’t give up because my fern came out okay. It wasn’t my best work but it wasn’t my worst.

The thing that stuck out the most was the Golden Ratio Collage which was basically a big swirl with nine sections that have to measure a certain length but still be in equal ratio. It was hard to understand at first but after some other examples from google I understood it more and it became my best work. I used an elephant head that matched up with the swirl and because elephants are grey I wanted to use a colorful background that would make the dull head stand out more. I used already cut colored pieces of paper and collaged them into each section of the golden ratio so you could see which section started and ended where. I enjoyed block printing because I’ve done it before, but this time was fun because we used styrofoam instead of a rubber plate. I choose a panda sleeping at night because it was supposed to be part of nature, and who doesn’t love panda’s?  I stuck with darker colors because it’s supposed to be at night, and most pandas have darker colored fur so it just seemed right.

Week 10 Slideshow

Posted by Brittany Atkinson in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 11:18 pm

For this course, my class was tasked with creating 5 core pieces of artwork. The themes of these assignments were a ceiling tile, charcoal still life, jack-o-lantern, self portrait, and painting or drawing of your choosing. Going through this project I wanted to express my emotions a little bit more and show how i feel when I'm not a around everyone else. My focus for most of these projects was to carry a message through every art piece I created. As a result of this I was able to find myself in the things I decided to create.

My favorite pieces in this collection would have to be Sleeping socialite and my Hello! X - RAY. These, though they might not seem like it, were inspired by what I actually find interesting about the world. I find it amazing how social media can enhance and discard beauty. It is a vessel that disconnects you from your surrounding but connects you to the world. In Sleeping Socialite, the girl is sleeping or closing her eyes to the world around her, pressing the dislike button on it so that she explore the world inside the internet. For Hello! X - RAY is more a piece that shows that we are all the same on the inside. Hello Kitty is an icon and seen as more important than the other characters in her line, just like how celebrities are seen as superior. I believe that no matter how different someone is, no matter their race, gender, sexual orientation, or social status, we are all the same.

This project as a whole as given me a different outlook on my artwork. I know that I can create whatever I want and I can be confident that I will be proud my work.

Q1 Art Portfolio

Posted by Stephanie Dyson in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 11:14 pm

As someone who seeks to find their artistic passion and means of expression, I found my work during this first quarter to be helpful in that journey. At the beginning of the quarter, I found that I'm much more comfortable drawing digitally and illustrating, which inspired my ceiling tile. My freed drawings are also digital illustrations/sketches. Toward the midpoint, I began experimenting with pencils, pens and markers on paper and trying new mediums and I did so with my jack-o-lantern. At the end, I found that I'm terrible at drawing myself and resorted to an impromptu illustrative portrait of one of my closest friends during a homework date. I have a lot to work on, but I've done a wonderful job this quarter starting to mold my path for the year.

Q1 Ten Week Art Project (Jordan Meriwether)

Posted by Jordan Meriwether in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 10:48 pm

I wanted to try something new. In the wake of feeling powerful emotions it is best to react on them artistically, for me I had a lot of strange days some were great and others were lonely. I worked on these emotions and tried to wide them into my works to truly make something special. We instructed to draw a picture each week of this quarter, in no specific order, I chose to test myself and see how it works out. I went forward and started on a high note making the Infinity Gauntlet, which was featured in many Marvel comic books. I had a comic for reference and in my sketch came out better than I had hoped, it was very detailed though so I would need to be careful about the transfer to ceiling tile. In the transfer there was a small problem the original image was much too big for the tile, so I had to make some minor adjustments. Overall, My tile came out Clean, I feel like I was able to capture a variety of colors and give the object a bit of dimension. To complete the more open-ended task of choosing my own drawings I chose one to be and emotionally interpreted piece (dread) and the other to be a based off of a famous scene in the classic horror movie Nosferatu. Next we move on to largest of the projects the still life, it was simple yet detailed from my view, I wanted something that gave a new point of view to the idea of a still life. Then there is the Jack-O-Lantern, which I made a bold choice on; I did not color in the face. The choice was made since naturally the human eye is attracted to the White of the face giving it a bit of emphasis. The Halloween costume was simply a zombie in a tattered suit and a top hat, I think it had really gives him some character. My self-portrait is probably done less professionally since this is the first time I ever worked with chalk, it is bright and happy to emphasize the proudness of my completion of it. Overall I feel this first quarter was quite successful, I hope to try twice as hard in the next one.

Q1 Art Portfolio - Gilliam

Posted by Jasmin Gilliam in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 8:42 pm

There is nothing harder than finding your voice in your art work. This quarter I started out by trying to control what the art did instead of letting it take me with it. By the end of the quarter I learned that controlling my artwork restricts it to a point where it doesn't have the chance to represent me any longer. I have learned so much through this quarter of ups and downs and letting the creative process take its toll on my work.

Quarter 1 Senior Art

Posted by Gina Sorgentoni in Senior Art - Hull - D on Friday, November 13, 2015 at 6:02 pm

This quarter I tried to challenge myself with what I drew, I wanted to work on expanding my skills. Everything I drew this quarter was something I struggled with and spent a lot of time working on. I also got in to using watercolors, since it was a medium that I also found very challenging, and really like the results that came from it. I am particularly proud of the ceiling tiles I made and enjoyed working on the charcoal piece since it is a medium I rarely use. I hope to improve my technique as the year goes on and continue to challenge myself artistically.
