Journal Entry # 36

Violence is powerful but non-violence initiates action. For example actually I have no example, but I will explain my reasoning. If you are violent law officials will see you as silent and easy tagets, but if you are non-violent there only strategy is no longer effective and they must give you what you need.If you are non-violent this awaken the opposing party and tells them "no this is not a joke." Both of these acts of resistance will have consequence, but one will be less painful.

My Faith in non-violence by Mohanda K. Ghandi

"I have found that life persist in the midst if destruction and, therefore there must be a higher law than that of destruction... I have found, however, that this law of love has answered as the law of destruction has never done."

Ghandi's response to non-violence was not only plausible, but soothing. I have heard of him only when being compared to American activist ie. Doctor King. But actually hearing/reading his views makes me think of new ways we can end violence today.

Colonialism in Asia

Posted by Raekwon Smith in World History - Block on Sunday, June 2, 2013 at 9:27 am

The basic ideas of colonialism was a global trade with a purpose

India, Malaya, Dutch Indies, Ceylon and the Philippines were rich in natural resources.

If you had enough land for your family and were told to grow crops for Europe then you would begin starving due to you losing crops.

When a colony was made they threw anyone in it forcing them to co-exist

Turned colonies against each other

Used bribes and small steps when taking over the colonies

Europe is getting most of the profit

Made the asians that if they had lighter skin then you were better and more beautiful.

Europe controlled over 84% of the world

Questions

Does colonialism still exist or is it over

How can you strive when your overseers have given up

Quotes about religion
Respond to one (agree, disagree, connections)

Religion is the sign of the oppressed creature, the sentiment of a heartless world, and the sould of soul- less conditions. It is the opium of the people- Karl Max. 1884

I agree with this because back then, a lot of people feel the negative passion of endanger of the other society when they have different religion. No one cares about the other group of people. They think about themselves and the world is segregated because people believe in different things. I believe that everyone has a leader; therefore it brings people together. For example, famous people will tell the people in the society not to do non violence because its a better reputations of not doing any sinful things. I think there is one God, but people see it with different types of God when there are more than one religion.

It causes violences because there ar war happening. Religion have different myths where people do different things.
Historic Map Islam

What is the best way to adress global inequality?

The best way to adress global inequality is to give every race the same oppurtunity and pay. Another way is to not judge people by their religion, or their beliefs, because they could be jsut like you, but just a different religion. Also, places that are over populated should have more that what places that ae less populated have.

WHich is more powerful, violence or nonviolence?

I believe that violence is more powerful even though in most cases it is not appropriate to use. I say this because people get what they want fast and more efficient if the use violence . Violence is also more powerful because you gain a lot of respect from people even though most people would categorize it as fear.

v
-over power people
-gets to ending
-forces things to change
-leads to destruction
-large audience

NV
-Shows control
-leads to changing mind

question: What is more powerful violence or non-violence?

answer: I think non-violence is more powerful. I believe this because I don't believe that if a person is violent then they are powerful that just means you are making yourself look stupid and crazy not powerful. Ig you are non-violent your mature and powerful because you don't let things get to you and you been through a lot but yet your still standing strong.

I think that violence is more powerful because although people may get hurt or killed, their point got heard in a powerful way. If one didn't act out and only spoke, it wouldn't make a difference. People have to take action When a large fight breaks out, more and more people will know about it rather than just giving a speech. Actions always speak louder than words.

       Violence                                                                        Non violence
- Can over power people                                                    - Shows control and power
- Gets to an ending                                                           - Changes the way one thinks
- Forces things to change                                                   - More persuasion
- Shows how serious it is                                                    - Initiates action
- Leads to destruction
- Larger audience

Why is the world such an unequal place?

I believe that the reason why the world is such an unequal place, is because of the economies. There are different kinds of money that are worth way more than others.
The best way to adress global inequality, is to first fix the economy, because many countries' economies crashed. and left many people unemployed and homeless. Racism can also be reduced in order to make global inequality more equal.

Does art cause people to think certain ways or does art show people how to think?

I believe that art does cause people to think certain ways, because art changes you to think in a whole new perceptive. You must change your expectations and go deeper into the art to fully understand it. Books like "Their Eyes Were Watching God" are great examples of literature art that changes the way you read, and think about the art.                That's why I believe that art does cause people to think certain ways.

Do you think Okonwo's past experience are an excuse for his current behavior?

I think Okonwo's past experiences are & aren't an excuse for his current behavior because he had work a lot independently to get where he is now. Along with that the shame of having a father as the village failure of which must play a big role in who he is now. He never really had a role model or father figure to show and teach him the roles and guide him to gain some moral values. But at the same time it's not okay that he is so controlling and walks around like a total statue. Emotionless. Hard. Cold. but this is a result of what happened to him in the past. being the way Okonwo's is, is probably just his way to get things done without technically having any interference. HI see him as basically by himself. I'm in the middle with my answer because his mental morals may not be straight but It can't totally be his fault for the way he is.
