Bailey Britton Q4 Art Portfolio

Posted by Bailey Britton in Art Advanced - Hull - a2 on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 10:01 pm
The last quarter of 2 day art we got to pick our own projects to do. I loved that idea because I got to draw and paint almost whatever I wanted. My favorite piece was the drawing of the kitten because it was the easiest thing for me to draw and I think that one looks the best. I think art shows things words cannot. Drawings and paintings show expressions that words cannot describe, and that's why I like it so much.

Bailey Britton Capstone

Posted by Bailey Britton in Capstone - Rami - Wed on Monday, May 11, 2015 at 2:24 pm
The initial inspiration behind this project was myself having Crohn’s Disease since I was 11 years old. Even though I have had this disease for such a long time I wanted to learn even more about it and be able to teach the students and teachers in the school about it. This project not only required me to use what I already know about Crohn’s Disease, but it required me to do even more research about it. My out of school mentor was my gastroenterologist, which in other words is a digestive system doctor, and she helped me because when I was younger she explained Crohn’s to me in a way that made it easier for me to understand and easier for me to explain to people who have no idea what it is. As a result of this project, I was able to learn even more about my disease and I was able to teach others about it. I hope that this helps people understand what Crohn’s Disease is and how it impacts people’s lives.

"Closing in on a Cure for Crohn's." WNDU RSS. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.wndu.com/home/headlines/Closing-in-on-a-cure-for-Cr-289967771.html>.

This source provides information about doctors trying to find a cure for Crohn’s Disease. This is useful to me because it lets me know how many people in America suffer from Crohn’s Disease and what it is. It also explains that there are treatments for the disease but there is no cure for it. It also explains the trials doctors are doing to see if they can cure Crohn’s Disease. It also says how many countries are using the MAP trial of antibiotics. This source also has the background of Crohn’s Disease and how long people have known about it.

"Crohn's & Colitis." CCFA: What Is Crohn's Disease. N.p., n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2015. <http://www.ccfa.org/what-are-crohns-and-colitis/what-is-crohns-disease/>.

This source provides information about what Crohn’s Disease is. This is important and helps me because even though I know what Crohn’s Disease is it gives me a better understanding of how to describe it to the people I am going to present to. This source also tells the symptoms and signs of Irritable Bowel Disease (IBD). Also, it tells me who it affects and what the causes of Crohn’s Disease are. This helps me because I don’t know everything about Crohn’s Disease, and this site helps me to know most things I do not know.

"Crohn's Disease Center: Symptoms, Types, Causes, Tests, and Treatments."WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2015. <http://www.webmd.com/ibd-crohns-disease/crohns-disease/>.

This source provides information about the symptoms of Crohn’s Disease, the types of IBD, the causes of Crohn’s, the tests that are done to see if a person has the disease, and the types of treatment that is done. This is useful to me because in my presentation I want to talk about the types of treatments that the people with Crohn’s Disease have to go through when they are sick and even when they are healthy. I also wanted to talk about the symptoms of Crohn’s disease and the signs that you may have Crohn’s Disease. This source helped me a lot with things I needed to know.

"Crohn's Disease Diet Plan: Foods to Avoid, Low-Residue Diet, and More."WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.webmd.com/ibd-crohns-disease/crohns-disease/creating-a-crohns-disease-diet-plan>.

This source is useful because it lets me know the diet that some people with Crohn’s Disease have to be on. It talks about the food that will keep you from getting a flare up (when the stomach gets so inflamed that you have to go to the hospital). It also talks about what certain foods they can eat when they are in a flare up, because they can only eat specific types of foods. This source also talks about why it is a good thing to have a diet plan when you are on Crohn’s Disease. This source is going to help me explain the diet plans that people with Crohn’s Disease have to follow.

Interview. Everyday Health. N.p., 1 Nov. 2007. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.everydayhealth.com/crohns-disease/pearl-jams-mike-mccready-on-the-road-with-crohns/mike-mccreadys-life-with-crohns.aspx>.

This source is an interview with Pearl Jams lead guitarist, Mike McCready. He talks about how his life has been since he has gotten diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. He speaks about how having Crohn’s Disease impacts his life while he is on tour and how sometimes he had to stop in the middle of a concert because he was going to get sick. In the interview he says, “I was quite embarrassed by it and ashamed and wanted to not talk about it and hide.” This helps me with my Capstone because I want to talk about how it is okay to not be shamed of having Crohn’s Disease.

Interview. The Crohn's Colitis Effect. N.p., 18 Oct. 2012. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://cceffect.org/interviews/interview-with-stephanie-hughes/>.

This source is also an interview. It is not an interview with a famous person, just an ordinary American citizen named Stephanie Hughes. The interview talks about how having Crohn’s Disease has her impacted her whole life, including her family, college, friends, relationships, and her day to day life. She also kept a blog about having Crohn’s Disease called The Stolen Colon. This is useful to me because it’s always good to know other people’s experiences with Crohn’s Disease instead of just basing the whole project off my experience with living life with Crohn’s Disease.

"Result Filters." National Center for Biotechnology Information. U.S. National Library of Medicine, n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22879737>.

This source is useful to me because it talks a lot about Crohn’s Disease and what it is. It also talks about methods to treat it and how those methods work for different people.  It’s also useful because it also says that people kept video diaries through their recoveries from them being sick. I find that useful because it lets me know how people go through the recovery process in their own ways. I could use this source to help me describe Crohn’s Disease, the methods that are used to treat it, and the way people go through the recovery process.

"Crohn's Disease." Treatments and Drugs. N.p., n.d. Web. 26 Jan. 2015. <http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/crohns-disease/basics/treatment/con-20032061>.

This source helped me because it informed me about the treatments and drugs used to help Crohn’s Disease. It also says that sometimes when the Crohn’s Disease gets really bad the person that has this disease has to get surgery to remove the parts of their bowel that has the disease in it. The source also lists the different types of drugs that are used to treat Crohn’s Disease. Next to the different types of drugs it also describes what that type of medicine does to help the Crohn’s Disease. This source is useful to me because in my presentation I would like to talk about the different types of medication that are used to treat Crohn’s Disease.

"Crohn's Disease." Crohn's Disease. N.p., n.d. Web. 27 Jan. 2015. <http://www.niddk.nih.gov/health-information/health-topics/digestive-diseases/crohns-disease/Pages/facts.aspx>.

This source is useful because it provides significant information about everything about Crohn’s Disease. It talks about what Crohn’s Disease is, what causes Crohn’s Disease is, how it is diagnosed, the diet, what the complications are, and more. This is very useful because even though I have other sources that explain what Crohn’s Disease is, they all explain it in different ways, and that makes me think of how I want to explain it. It also explains the causes instead of just listing them like the other sources did. Also, none of my other sources spoke about what the complications were and that helps me because I would like to speak about that in my presentation.

"Crohn's Disease Doesn't Care If You're Famous." EverydayHealth.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 29 Jan. 2015. <http://www.everydayhealth.com/crohns-disease-pictures/7-celebs-with-crohns-disease.aspx#02>.

This source provides me with information about some famous people that have Crohn’s Disease. It also informed me about how their life was with Crohn’s Disease and when they got diagnosed. This source helps me because in my presentation I want to teach people that even famous people have Crohn’s Disease and they are not ashamed of it. Even though we may not know about famous people having Crohn’s Disease, some people with it do interviews, so it is okay not to be ashamed. Also, I want to teach who I am presenting to about how many famous people have it. I want to do this because I want to compare how many famous people have Crohn’s Disease to how many people who are not famous have it.

Bailey Britton Q3 Art Portfolio

Posted by Bailey Britton in Art Advanced - Hull - a2 on Friday, April 10, 2015 at 10:03 am
This quarter I explored mostly basic shapes. The hardest piece of art work for me to create was the self portrait because I've always had trouble drawing people's faces. We focused on basic shapes for the last three assignments and I thought it was going to be harder than it actually was. I really liked this quarter of art because we didn't have to do too much detail and we could just focus on making it the best artwork that we could.

Bailey Britton Q2 Art Portfolio

During this quarter of Art I complete the 4 assignments, which were an art collage, a fabric drawing, a photo that was edited, and a drawing from a piece of writing. My favorite assignment I would have to say was my drawing from a piece of writing but it was also the hardest. I feel like the easiest assignment was editing the photo, but I really liked that also. I think my least favorite piece of art we had to do this quarter was because I couldn't decide on what to do. I feel like I have grown as an artist because my work looks at least a little bit better than it did in quarter one

I didn’t think I could draw when I first joined this class, but I wanted to learn. I realized that all you have to do is try, because if you don’t then you will never be able to draw. You need to put in at least some effort for your work to look somewhat nice, but you need to put in a lot of effort if you want your work to look amazing. My father can draw and so can my uncle, and I wanted to be able to do what they do, which is be able to express their thought and feelings through pictures.

I would have to say that my favorite piece of work from this quarter were my ceiling tiles, because I worked very hard on them and they came out looking great. The hardest thing for me though was the drawing that we got to choose. It was hardest for me because I decided to draw the eiffel tower and it it is very detailed and complicated, but when I finished the drawing it looked almost identical to the eiffel tower.

I am excited to see what assignments we will have in Q2 and how much more they teach me about art and expressing my feelings through drawing and painting.

Book Review on 50 Shades of Grey

Posted by Bailey Britton in English 3 - Rami - E on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 12:23 pm
IMG_1787
IMG_1787

There are many characters in the book 50 Shades of Grey. The main characters’ names are Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. They meet and suddenly become attracted to one another.

Christian Grey is a very intimate man with a huge secret. He is tall and attractive with dark, copper colored hair and intense, bright eyes. Christian is outspoken and speaks his mind about everything, but when it comes to his personal life he is extremely secretive. He is the CEO of Grey Enterprises Holdings, Inc. which means he is very rich and confident about himself.

Anastasia Steele is a senior and a literature student at Washington State University. She is awfully shy, especially when it comes to Christian Grey. She gets unnaturally nervous  around him and is very self conscious about how she looks and what she says. She is an intelligent woman with a terribly big issue.

In the book, Anastasia is given a document that makes her think twice about whether she wants to be associated with Christian Grey or not. She can not tell anyone about the document, so she can’t even get Kate, her roommate’s, opinion on the whole situation. If Ana doesn’t sign the document, she will never see or hear from Christian again, even though Christian really cares about her. Kate has her suspicions about Christian Grey, but she just can’t quite put her finger on it.

Christian Grey is a immensely manipulative towards everyone. He can get anyone that he knows to do things remarkably easy, especially Anastasia. She is so attracted to Christian she stumbles on her words and when she walks. They get to know each other very well as the book goes on, but Anastasia still doesn’t know what shes in for. She is sucked into his lifestyle easily by his intriguing eyes and mixed between happy and serious emotions. She sees that he is mysterious but she wants to pull him out of his shell and see what Christian is hiding. She tries getting in his heart, but quickly realizes that he won’t let anyone get that close to him.

Christian cares about Anastasia and wants her to part of his crazy lifestyle, but will she say yes to him?  He asks a lot from Ana. He wants her under his terms with very little compromise. Anastasia doesn’t know if she is ready for the affairs Christian wants her to be a part of. The problem on her mind is that if she doesn’t agree she will never see or hear from Christian again and she doesn’t want that to happen because she is really falling for him, but she still needs to think extremely hard.

The book, 50 Shades of Grey is intended for mature audiences only. Mature audiences means people that are comfortable with reading scenes that are very erotic and descriptive. Most people like to call it “Mommy Porn” because it is immensely erotic and  extremely descriptive. There is a lot of controversy over the book, and E.L. James, the author didn’t think it was going to get so popular so for her first print, she went to Australia and only got a few print outs of the book. Word spread about the book quickly, and millions of copies have been sold all over the world. 50 Shades of Grey is a trilogy, and you will fall in love with the first book so much that it will make you want to read the second, “50 Shades Darker,” and the third and final book, “50 Shades Freed.” This book is an erotic romantic novel will have you on the end of your seat the whole time you’re reading it.

E.L. James, the author of 50 Shades of Grey is a British woman who was born on March 7, 1963. This would make her 50 years old today. Her book came out June of 2011 which means when it was published she was 48. This was her first time writing a trilogy, and I loved the first books so much that I am definitely going to read the other ones. Her birth name is Erika Mitchell, and she just uses E.L. James as a pseudonym. James didn’t expect the book to get so popular. She won 2 awards in 2012 for 50 Shades of Grey and they were, Popular Fiction Book of the Year, and Book of the Year. The book is also nominated for a GoodReads choice awards finalist for best romance. It is also a number one New York Times Bestseller.

Get sucked into the erotic and romantic novel that will take you further than you have ever imagined you could go in a book. Get attached to Christian, find out why Anastasia gets nervous around him, and see if she takes the offer he gives her or turns him down. Or walks away forever?

Humanities Final Portfolio 2013

Posted by Bailey Britton in English 2 - Block on Monday, June 10, 2013 at 8:37 pm
Throughout the year I spent in English and History class, I learned more about myself. I learned that I take a lot of things I have for granted, because I didn’t realize how bad people in other countries lives really are.

During this school year we learned a lot about other countries through the Holocaust and Colonialism. I am writing about Countries not always knowing what is best for other countries. The pieces of work that we did in class that have to do with this topic are the Torture and Obedience worksheet, the Night Themes and Insights worksheet, and the Graphic Novel Quote Responses on the Holocaust book we chose to read. I learned about this topic from reading the books, “Night” by Elie Wiesel and “Maus” by Art Spiegelman. Both of those books are about the Holocaust through Jewish peoples’ eyes. On the “Maus” Quote Sheet, we had to write quotes that we thought were interesting, what we thought about the quote, what the quote says about the book, and what the quote says about the world. On the “Night” Themes Worksheet, we had to write three quotes from the book about faith, relationships, hope, and control. We also had to write two statements and a deep question for each of those categories. These helped me learn about countries not knowing what’s best for each other because we live in a free country and we complain if our phone is going to slow, if there's traffic, or if something costs more than we want it to, but these people were fighting for their lives every day and we will never know what their experience was like. The Nazi’s were trying to control the Jewish people and wanted to kill them because they weren’t the “perfect” race. The last worksheet that helped me learn about this topic is the Torture and Obedience Worksheet. This helped me learn about the topic because it was a worksheet on a video that had to do with people shocking others if they answered a question wrong, but the people weren’t really getting shocked, and the video related to the book, “Night.” It related to “Night” because the Nazis tortured the Jewish people by putting them in gas chambers and keeping them in the concentration camps with barely any food or water. They also killed the Jews by putting them in a in a crematorium. We wait in line for the newest phones, newest sneakers, or even concert tickets, and the Jews waited in line for food and their death. Another piece of work that we did in History was a Colonialism Project. This helped me understand because after the Native Americans were colonized their whole world changed, and they didn’t want that to happen because they didn't know what the change would bring to their already formed culture but the Spaniards thought that colonization was best for the Natives even though the Spanish told them how to live their lives. An example of this in today's world is the budget cuts from the Philadelphia School District. They are taking away our rights to a better education from our electives, our sports programs, and even our counselors that help us with our college choices.

My thoughts about countries not always knowing what is best for one another changed throughout this year because I used to think that learning about other countries and the Holocaust was boring, but now that I learned about it in a different way I found out a lot more about the ways countries try to control other countries. Another way it changed my thinking was because it was in the perspective of people that were a part of the Holocaust rather than someone else’s perspective. I used to not like learning about History but the way that I learned it this year really changed my perspective on how I look at the world and it taught me that I shouldn’t take the things I have for granted.

What is the best way to adress global inequality?

The best way to adress global inequality is to give every race the same oppurtunity and pay. Another way is to not judge people by their religion, or their beliefs, because they could be jsut like you, but just a different religion. Also, places that are over populated should have more that what places that ae less populated have.

How does this project relate to the real world?

- This project relates to the real world because you are measuring buildings in the city and putting the height in to google map maker, and that helps people get more accurate heights.

What was the most exciting portion of this project and why? What was the least
exciting portion to this project and why?

- The most exciting portion of this project was getting to go outside because we don't ever do that in this class. The least exciting portion of this project was drawing the buildings because getting the scale could've been wrong.

What did you learn from completing this project?

-I learned the building heights around my school and I learned how to use the mirror method better.

There are a lot of different ways that people can say so many words. It differs each time you go to a different state. I am from South Philadelphia, and I was born and raised here, and the way that I say some words differs from the way others say some words. I sometimes put an extra syllable at the end of my words, or i stretch the word out and my parents mock me for it so I try to change the way I speak, but it’s hard because I’ve spoken that way for as long as I can remember. Sometimes I leave a letter or the ending of a word out, and that’s just because of my accent. My boyfriend’s mom’s name is Jen, and she is from New York, so she has a different way of saying some words than I do because of our different accents. Some of the words we say are the same, but some of them are completely different. “Joe go get your ‘beg’!” Yelled Jen from the top of the basement stairs. “Jen what did you just say?” I asked her because I didn’t think I heard her right. “I asked Joe to get is beg.” she said with a confused look on her face. “You mean bag, Jen?”  “I’m from New York I have a different accent than you.” “Oh okay.” I giggled as I said it because I forgot that I have an accent too, its just hard to realize it because almost everyone around me has the same accent that I do. There is more than just one word we say differently because of our two different accents. Another word we say differently is bagel. Jen says it as “baygel” and I say it as “begel”. Sometimes people that have the same accent as me say words differently. I was talking to Alexis about needing an envelope for money and she said, “Bail, I need an onvelope for this money.” “Lex you mean you need an envelope?” “Bail, it’s onvelope.” “No Lex, it’s envelope. It’s spelled with an -en.” We went into this long conversation about if its pronounced envelope of onvelope, and we even asked Joe, my mom, and Joe’s little brother Matty, until we just realized that it could be said either way depending on your accent. Another word a lot of people have controversy over how it’s said is caramel. Some people say it as it is spelled, so caramel, and other people say it with out the second -a, so carmel. It’s hard to understand some accents and some are very easy to understand because some of them could possibly sound a little bit like your accent, but the ones that are very hard to understand will probably not even be close to your accent.  Every time you say something that is different from the way someone else says it, it usually means that they have a different accent than you, and that’s not a bad thing, it just means that they say words differently than you, or their voices sound different when they say words.

Keystone XL Pipeline Monologue Project

Posted by Bailey Britton in World History - Block on Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at 9:14 am
Introduction

For our History Class in Science Leadership Academy, we had to write monologues as to why the Keystone XL Pipeline should or should not be built, or if someone is torn between wanting the pipeline to be built or not. We had to have facts and opinions in our monologues, and we had to make sure that the monologues made sense. My monologues are about why the Keystone XL Pipeline should be built, and that is my first one. My second one is about a man who doesn't know if he wants the pipeline to be built or not, and the last one is about a woman that wants the pipeline to be built, and she explains why it should be built. While working on this project a learned a lot of good and bad things about the pipeline. One good thing is that it will make more jobs available, and one bad thing is that people will have to give up their houses and their land for the pipeline to be built. We worked very hard on these projects, and we learned a lot about the Keystone Pipeline.

Monologue 1

(In the classroom walking around the desks, and explaining to her kids why the Keystone Pipeline shouldn’t be built.)

The Keystone Pipeline is meant to carry oil from Canada all the way down through Texas. It will go through six states, and it will destroy our environment. If this pipeline is built, people’s homes and land will be destroyed. There is a quote from tarsandsblockade.org, and it says, “Daryl braves fire and Keystone XL machinery to defend Eleanor’s farm.” This is only one reason that I am strongly against this pipeline. The people that run this are going to destroy our land and our homes. They could possibly make our water polluted, and we won’t be able to drink it. It will also make us not be able to grow crops, so we will have less food, and they don’t care because they still want to do that. I don’t know how your parents feel about the pipeline, but in my opinion everyone should be against it. Also, Obama claims that he is all about the people of the U.S.A., but if he approves of the pipeline, people will lose a lot, and if the pipe had a crack and the oil leaked that is very hazardous, and people could die.

Monologue 2

(Matthew Morris is sitting in his little cubicle at work, thinking to himself if he should leave his job to work with the pipeline, or if he should stay at his job. He has been hearing good and bad things about the pipeline.)

I don’t know what to do. I feel like I need more money, but at the same time if I will only be employed for five years, and I can’t get my job back here, then I will be unemployed and with this society it will be so hard to find another job. I need the money to help my family, but if I lose my job then my family income will be even worse than it already is. My wife isn’t working, because she stays at home with the children. The children have to go to public school, which isn’t so good, because we don’t have the money to pay for a good private school. We barely even have enough money for food.  I’ve heard good and bad things about the pipeline, so I looked on the internet. The internet also has good and bad things. I don’t know what to believe, or which side to take. I’m confused. Some people I know are all for the pipeline, but others are totally against it. I don’t know if I’m for or against the pipeline because I really need this job. I’ve heard that it will run through people’s home and land, so they will lose their houses and have to move. They will probably get paid for their houses and land, but not as much as it would sell for on the market. The government is probably going to approve of the pipeline, but I don’t know if I do after hearing all of the negative things about it. I’ve heard more negative than positive on this topic, and it makes me wonder if I should just leave it alone and stay at the job I have now. I’m just very confused but angry at the same time.

Monologue 3

(Sitting at her desk at her job as a lawyer, Christina Gibbs is typing about her feelings about the Keystone Pipeline and why it should be approved.)

“I am strongly for the Keystone Pipeline. I feel as though it will make the U.S.A. a better country all together. Also, instead of having to get as much oil as we do now from our enemy countries, we can get it from our allies. Also, the people that are going to be hired are going to go through training to learn how to weld the pipeline, so it isn’t like they aren’t learning how to make the pipeline. I also think this is a big step towards American independence because we are so dependent on the Middle East for oil, but if we get the pipeline we won’t have to be dependent of anyone. Also, she thinks everything will be better for the U.S. because we won’t have to associate with the countries that we hate, and that hate us. I feel as though the U.S.A. is independent in every other type of way except oil. If we got independent from other countries for oil, we would probably be the most independent country in the world.”

Appendix
- the Keystone XL Pipeline will make a lot of jobs available to people.
- if the pipeline leaks, it could pollute the water in the ground, and it could make the crops that people grow unhealthy to eat.
- If people get jobs helping make the pipeline they will only be employed for a few years.
- If the pipeline is built, a lot of people will have to move out of their houses, and off of their property.
- If the pipeline is built, the people that will be hired are going to be trained on how to weld the pipes together.
- If the pipeline is approved, then we will have to get less oil from the Middle East.

Descriptive Essay: "Welcoming a New Edition to the Family"

Posted by Bailey Britton in English 2 - Block on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 9:11 am

My mother walked into my dark room looking very serious, and said, “Bailey, I’m in labor, and we are going to leave the house in about 30 minutes.” When I found this out, it was 6 o’clock in the morning and I was in a deep slumber. I was warm and cozy in my full size comfortable bed. The night I found out, my friend, Diamond, slept over, and she was lying on the opposite side of my bed, and she was using a different blanket than I was. My blanket was a black and white zebra comforter, and it matched my sheets. Diamond’s blanket was purple and fuzzy. It smelled like my dog in my room because she was lying in bed with my friend and I. I had to wake up after my mom said that she was in labor, because my stepfather and I had to drive my friend to her dad’s house. I woke Diamond up and said, “Diamond! Wake up! My mom’s in labor and she needs to go to the hospital! Chris said he’s going to drive you home in ten to fifteen minutes.” She replied with, “Are you serious? I knew this was going to happen, but let me call my dad and let him know I have to go there because I know my mom isn’t up yet.”

Diamond and I got out of bed, our hair was frizzy, and very messy, so we just threw it up in a messy bun. I put blue Hollister sweatpants, and a blue Hollister hoodie, because I didn’t want to be cold. Diamond kept her pajamas on because she was going to her dad’s house and going back to sleep because it was too early for her to be up. When we got in my mother’s black 2006 Honda, my stepfather had to turn the air on because it was blazing hot in the car, and my nose got stuffy because it was also dry outside. I sat in the front seat with my stepfather, because I didn’t want to sit in the back and then get out of the car to get in the front seat after Diamond got out of the car. The car ride there was silent, because Diamond and I aren’t morning people, and my stepfather knows not to talk to us if it’s really early in the morning. After we dropped my friend off, we headed back to my house. The car was silent the whole ride home.
When we arrived at my house, my mom was sitting on the couch waiting patiently for us to get back so that she could call the doctor and tell her that she was in labor and going to the hospital. My mom sat on the loveseat, my stepfather sat on the couch, and I sat on the rocking chair for about another 45 minutes. My couch is brown, and so is the loveseat. The chair I was sitting on was black, and one of the most comfortable things that I have ever sat on in my entire life, and I was surprised that I didn’t fall back to sleep because I was so tired and exhausted, because Diamond and I didn’t go to sleep until three o’clock in the morning. I was running around like a chicken without a head that morning, and I had no idea what to do because I was never in a situation like that.
I walked outside my house, and it was kind of hot out that day, because my brother was born on July 22, 2012, and that’s the middle of the summer. We got into the car, and my mom took the passenger seat next to my stepfather, who was driving. I sat in the back of the car silent, because I didn’t want to be awake yet. My mom was silent too because she was in pain and didn’t want to talk because she was not only in pain, but she was tired and exhausted. We rushed to Jefferson Hospital, because that’s where my mom’s doctor that was going to deliver the baby was located. My stepfather dropped us off at the emergency room entrance, so that he could go park the car, and my mom wouldn’t have to walk from wherever the car was parked.
When we walked into the hospital, we saw a security guard wearing a blue shirt with black pants, and he asked, “What are you looking for?” My mom replied, “I’m looking for labor and delivery because I’m in labor.” He told us directions to where we needed to go, and he called a nurse to get my mom settled in the room, and to help her get up to labor and delivery.
When my mom got set up in labor and delivery, I just sat there and closed my eyes, so I couldn’t see anything that was going on, and I don’t really remember because it was so early in the morning. All I remember is my mother just lying there in pain, and waiting for my baby brother to be born. I took a nap for about three hours on the green uncomfortable chair, but i was under two blankets so i was warm, while we waited for my brother to be ready to come out and be part of this world, and all of our lives. I woke up just in time for my brother to be born. I stood at the top of the bed, holding my mom’s hand because she was in the worst pain anyone ever felt. The next thing I remember was my brother lying on my mother’s chest just staring around the room, only making a little peep here and there. I said to my mom. “He is the most beautiful thing in the world!”

When I found out my mother was in labor I was probably the happiest person in the world, and when I saw my brother’s beautiful face, I know that I was the happiest person in the universe.

Negative and Positive Space

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)
Negative Space is when you shade in the blank parts of your drawing, usually where nothing is. Like in a drawing of a chair, in between the legs would be shaded, and that is considered negative spave.

B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

I found negative space in my stool drawing, by shading in the parts of the stool that have nothing there, like in between the legs of the stool. I found negative space in my cut out because I saw the dark parts of the bird, and I cut them out, because that is what you had to trace, and  cut out to make the cut out.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist to see negative space, because it helps the artist tell which part of the drawing is real, and can be touched, and what part is just air.
D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?
Yes, seeing negative space enhances drawings, because they look more professional, and it helps the person looking at the drawing, to see what is air, and what is not.

Below, is a website where i learned some very interesting things about good slide design. I made my slide look the way it does because i learned from the websites I went on to keep it simple, and use color. Another thing I learned from the websites I used was to choose the right text that goes with your slide.

When I read the Zen post, I learned to make your text big. You also have to make it a visual aid, because slides are not a text aid. This means to use a limited amount of text and not to overwhelm the audience.
