Abstract

For my capstone, I researched what made a community and what made a community moves forward. SLA has always been a school that believed in community-based learning. In the past four years we have built a community in which we have learned to rely on. Throughout this capstone I have spoken to students on how they felt about the move to Benjamin Franklin. I have thought much to the burden of what is going to become SLA @ BF. I created a community wall, using a piece of drywall we gave the opportunity of anyone and everyone who considered themselves part of the SLA community. I learned and wanted to explore the impact that artwork and community meant to students, because we all need something to lean back on. Art work is a big part of the world of SLA, it posted on walls and on the ceilings, you can not walk more than five feet without seeing a piece of artwork, and that is something I would liked to see continued as a tradition to the new school . And I wanted them to have something that they as a community could carry with them in the next years at the new school.

 Interview: Vivian Pham- community wall Folks Arts Culture Treasures. We did this as middle schoolers. It was a stable of making me feel included at Folks Arts Culture Treasures. School was difficult when transferring to an environment I had never dealt with before. Attending a school was everyone was a different race than me, and spoke differently than me. When we were doing all of this it made the school feel more welcoming. I would like to see how it affect her as a student who had attended prior Interview:

Art is the foundations for some peoples happiness, art is an expression of who we are and a way to share it that more personal than spoken word. Our artwork is a piece of us that we are leaving to interpretation. It is an expression of anger, guilt, sacrifice, happiness, stability, or many more emotions. Art is fluid. Many students within Science Leadership Academy rely on their artwork as their form of sanity and safety. Losing expression already maybe hard for the students, but to carry a small staple of Science Leadership Academy with these small tiles, will make a big impact.

The strengthening a community due to community art. People have so many differences, talents are unique and no one is the same. The world of art is multidimensional. Everyone has a form of an artist in them so allowing people of different skills, build a piece together, can allow people push boundaries with one another and it allows them to get to know each other without words having to be exchanged. The exchange of personality and creation can push people together and get communities to be homes. A way to make communities feel welcoming and safe.

And the reaction students have to new students. The first few weeks become weeks of scooping out the new students to find which cliques they will fall in. some students to feel ostracised. They must find their place very early between the new crowd.

 Personal thoughts on being a new student in the middle of your high school life. High school is already really difficult for most students who struggle with assignments, friendships and finding out what they would like to do with their futures. Students are already dealing with the struggles of daily life. This is someones personal story on what they didn’t expect. Science Leadership Academy has tried to prepare everyone for what they expect, but for each student, there’s going to be unexpected.

This is an older journal that shows the importance of growth in a community. Linear growth while expected can take to be a very long process, and linear functions can have a linear-plateau. Sometimes an exponential growth, as well as a growth mindset, is needed. Anything that can bring them closer quicker may be the best thing for the students. Being in an uncomfortable situation for both sets of these students could cause for a arise of problems.

 Many students are going through daily struggles in their lives. Many will struggle with depression anxiety. As well as many will experience homelessness, grief, abuse, and a change in environment can make the aftermath of these situations worse. In this Ted talk, we get to see the story of Jonathan Wynn. A man who experienced homelessness in high school. He alongside his mother struggle financially. They couldn’t get ends to meet. He struggled to keep the fursona of happiness. His mother said he should try and find to way to help someone else. He could barely get his feet off the floor at 17. He found a love of music during all of his stays in his mother’s car. He brought his voice into school and brought his artform into a safe he didn't always feel safe in. He refound his happiness with school when he brought his art form in and shared it with his schoolmates.

The Wheaton area had had a recent influx of new mover into the area. This community became split into two separate communities. It became a world of cliques between the new and old members of the community. People stayed within their grouping avoiding the opposite. The newer members didn’t feel included in the community as a whole. They have a part of their own clique. Fearfully this could be the situation with the current move to Benjamin Frankin High School. The Wheaton Parks and Recreations Department made the decision to bring togetherness. They created a community tile wall that allowed everyone to share a personal part of themselves. Science Leadership Academy is known for its artwork. It may make the tradition easier for students of both schools if they know they share something within the building.

 This website shows why children need a community to strive in schools. This article while on alternative schooling, where members of the community help each other move forward in the people they become. With a form of collaboration from every member of the society does make the community feel safer and more welcoming. The students in this alternative school while a bit younger than the students of Science Leadership Academy and Benjamin Franklin, they were not so much younger that the information within the website would become null and void, the website spoke on middle schools (students age 11-14). If we can make these transitions easier for students than we have to make it as easy as we can.

Brendan Hall Capstone

Initially for my capstone I was unsure whether or not to make a music blog for the project or submit my own music. I ended up doing both and described how the process of creating music has led to me gaining confidence and coping with personal issues. While on the other hand I was able to do research on how music can boost academic and emotional atributes with young people. I also provided an outlet for people passionate about music within the SLA community to share their story on how it has positively impacted them. Finally, I recommended albums on my website that I believe can make people become aware of human issues while giving them emotionally relatability. My inquiry question was, "How can music positively affect someone on an intellectual and emotional level?". Through my capstone I was able to discover that music can depict social issues enhacing their intellect while also providing shared emotional experiences with others that would likely not exist.

For my Senior Capstone project, I decided to volunteer at a Family Emergency Center in West Philadelphia and work with an Organization in Texas called Human Coalition. If you don’t already know I grew up in a single mothers homes where everyday I saw the struggles my mom undertook just to provide for my sisters and I.  This factor in my life has been deeply rooted in me and has shaped the person I am today. So my mission was to bring awareness to Teen pregnancy, for there is a lot of controversy to this topic. At the Emergency center, I got to work closely with the young mom that lived there. I was able to connect with these women while offering support.  My mother who was a former residence of the women’s home came in and talk to them as well. She told her life stories, challenges of being in their shoes and how she overcame her obstacles. The whole meaning of my project is to really just bring awareness to these women. I wanna be able to take their stories and be the messengers that they trust that will convey their message into something positive. I wanna be that person to let them know that their life choices don’t define them. Me and my mother will be that embodiment of this.

  • Being the daughter of a teen mom, I noticed the struggle my mother  had when balancing working a job, taking care of 2 kids one her own and  trying to pursue an education for us all to have a better life. A lot of times mothers don’t have opportunity to go to school simply because of money. Their main focus isn’t just school now, it’s making sure their kids  have a roof over their head and something to eat. This sources talks about how some organizations help young mothers who want to continue an education.

Following behind are Labor Force Participation, Occupational Status and many more. This source is a great insight to people aren't aware of how teen pregnancy contracts from others.

This is a very useful topic, that shares an important perspective showing correlations to the abandonment of pregnant teens.

  • My mother, sister, and I left the housing facility because after being on the waitlist for a couple months she had been accepted into Section 8. Section 8 isa housing assistance program run by the federal government. It was created to help low- income families afford decent safe and sanitary housing. To get into Section 8 an HA determines your eligibility based on : your annual gross income, whether you qualify in their requirements, and U.S citizenship or eligible immigration status.







Leah Bradstreet Capstone

For my Capstone, I conducted extensive research to formulate a paper and an art representation to answer the question, "How has our current understanding of the brain affected how we treat others?" In order to answer this question, I conducted three interviews, regularly visited my local library for source material, and met with my mentor to plan my next move. With all of this new data about how people have treated others based on psychological evidence, I formulated a four-page research essay which attempted to prove my hypothesis. I thought that no matter how humanity evolved, our treatment of those different than us would never evolve with us. We would remain unable to show true compassion to the stranger. Using the sources gained from the library, I believe I answered this question. In order to represent my research paper, I decided to create an art gallery of five pieces to illustrate the ignorance towards those that are different than the "normal" picture of humanity because of something they cannot control: their mental health. Each piece represents a common, yet misunderstood mental illness that has shown to divide us from each other no matter how much we think we understand about it. Above all, I learned about some of the capabilities of the human lengths of compassion possible in our world, and that because of human nature, the road to true compassion is going to be slow and bumpy with many setbacks. However, I don’t believe it to be impossible.

This source is a document written by some college students about the practical ways people think and how they come to new ideas and conclusions. It explains in depth the step by step way the brain functions. It also shows many applications for this. I want to use this source to view one of the many ways people understand how the human thought process works. There are many others, but this is one of the main ones.

This is another source which reveals a more religious perspective of psychology through someone who used to view the science through a more conventional and modern lense but changed his perspective to a way of thinking dating back centuries. This is one of the many perspectives of psychology adapted over the years. It will be useful to my research because of this new light and because it used to be widely accepting, but is less so now. There may be insight into why that is within the article.

Malone, John C. Psychology: Pythagoras to Present. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 2011.

This story is a true story of how psychology as a whole developed. It was written by an MIT graduate and scholar and backed up by another college’s recommendations. Despite that, this book can be summarized as a well, summary of all of the psychology from Aristotle’s time to now. In essence, it gives a blatant history lesson on psychology. Although it doesn’t directly relate to my thesis, there are fractions that do give support to the ideas of other selected sources.

This article explores the evolutionary perspective of human thought. It dates back as far as we can go in recorded human history and explores theories around how evolved thinking has gotten over time. This article is a more biological piece than metaphysical or practical one. It relies more on physical evidence and less on interviews, records, and psychological theory. There are many diverse sources used in this article which support its words. For this reason, a more biologically concrete perspective is welcomed to my research compilation.

This source is a bit of a mind-bender, for it asks if psychology as a science can be advanced with psychological science. One may ask if they are the same thing, which this article explains and expands upon. This article, which talks about advancement, reflects upon what institutions of psychology used to be. What used to be may hint upon why it needed to change, a major factor of my thesis. That historical nugget of information is what I hope to find in this source.

This source explores the psychology of religion in a modern, normal aesthetic. The person who wrote this sees is as part, but not all of his life, and wrote this in that lens. The source is yet another perspective of psychology to explore. It is very similar to the Richard Gallagher article but has some key differences to explore in the research field. Those key difference appear in its difference in the nature of belief, the depth explored, and simply general difference in ideas about religion. This article mirrors the previous article on religion.

Zaire Williams Capstone

For my Capstone, I wanted to focus on something that I am very passionate about. Last summer, I went to Bloomsburg to stay with my brother and he showed me a store his friend owned with a clothing printer and different clothing people created adding their own logos. Just being there made me feel positive and motivated to contribute to what I experienced, So later on that night I pulled out my drawing book and got to work. After a couple of weeks, I came up with the idea of a logo called “Through The Storm”. “Through The Storm” is a short way of saying “Your true character rises when you are facing the storm. How you show up when life gets tough will reveal how much of the inner work you have.” My plan is to not just have a successful brand but also spread a message that reflects off of me that people can relate to. To promote my brand the SLA BSU gave me the opportunity to to do that by giving me $300 to buy the shirts, get them printed and letting their dance and step team wear my shirts during the BSU Gala performances. For there big help and care for me, I want to thank them all as a great team for letting me contribute to their amazing event. I do plan to continue my journey with “Through The Storm” and make many changes to my brand that will benefit me in my future.

Lauren Matthews Capstone

For my capstone project, I designed and decorated the venue for the Second Annual Black Student Union Gala. My main goal was to include the SLA community with the decorating process so I contacted the Community Involvement Club and asked for volunteers. I had more than 20 volunteers decorating the space so the decorating didn’t take too much time. There was a total of 22 tables and 240 chairs to decorate. My goal was to decorate the event under three hours and it took two hours. The colors of the design came from the Pan- African colors, which represent liberation, unity, and growth. The overall decoration was a success. I learned most importantly involving the SLA community keeps everyone more connected with their peers and makes them more a part of club events. Seeing students from different grades come together and work as a team made me feel proud because there are little opportunities where upperclassmen may interact with the underclassmen. It has taught me that the relationships created with my SLA peers expand more than inside the hallways. This project would have not been pieced together if it had not been for the help of each volunteer.

This article was selected because it gives factual evidence to support the correlation of academic performance and parent - community partnerships. I will use this article to support the overall goal of presentation piece, which is to create more relationships between the scholars and the academic community. I will also focus on the collaboration aspect of working together to design the Gala to welcome everyone.

The Gala will bring schools together to share a voice for minorities and school organizations.

This website gives me insight on the early actions of BSU and the foundations of Black empowerment. The Gala doesn’t just focus on certain black cultures but to consider recognizing advocacy outreach within different cultures. This website helps me with creating a theme for the Gala for the different cultures found in the different school communities. Also using this website I will include comprehension on why SLA BSU was created and the legacy left behind for minorities in school communities.

These principles will help with dependency, which is a key to for building relationships between people.

Democratic roles are for bigger school clubs that need help with making decisions which may be a struggle. To prevent these things. The meeting will be happening within BSU about parenting help.

During this interview, I will be discussing the different fabrics and design materials needed to bring the vision of the Gala. The materials that will be gathered will include african prints for table cloths or napkins. I would also discuss the choice of materials, why including certains prints or plates. Involving different schools give input on what needs to be included will help explore different aspects of culture dynamics and race within the schools.

Event Planner Interview 28/3 Wednesday

During this interview, I would discuss the future aspects for the Gala. Some of the aspects are involving other schools student governments that are invited to the Gala. Involving the SLA CIc club will help help the organization within the school. Now that the school is moving to Ben Franklin, students can also incorporate project developments for BSU related events like the Gala or Schools dances. As for Parent Organizations, donations and volunteers for event setup could relive stress for student event planning. Having this conversation will sought out the future steps for student organizations for school activities.

Colin Taylor-McGrane Capstone

For my senior project, I created a maze, outlined all possible motions in tape, and programmed a small VEX robot to navigate it. I discovered that most conventional mazes are composed of two pieces that fit together. Therefore, all mazes can be solved by following the left or right wall from start to finish. To give the robot the means to navigate the maze, I outlined all of the possible directions the robot could travel in black tape. The bottom of the robot was equipped with three infrared sensors. These sensors worked by shooting infrared light down at the ground and detecting the light that bounces back. Because of the light absorption of the black tape, the light detected bouncing off of the black tape will be different. I ran through many different maze designs, trying to create one that would have as many points of choice as possible that could fit on a flattened tri-fold board. It took several tries, but I finally succeeded by erasing lines on a 4 by 5 grid until I created a viable maze. After I created the code, I placed the robot on a the maze and let it run through. After observation I adjusted the speed of the robot and the code governing action at intersections. I also added additional strategically placed tape at T-junctions to ensure that the robot detects the black tape with its left or right sensor.

This source is an experiment done with autonomous robotic navigation of mazes done at Rutgers University done by a group of 6 graduate students. The students were attempting to figure out how to use programming techniques in order to allow robots to figure out how to find the fastest possible route through a maze. Their research was inspired by the ability of Google maps to figure out the exact fastest route to a certain location. The students believed that this software could be very useful for autonomous robots and vehicles. I would use this source to find out what exactly the programing techniques they used are and how they are applicable to the maze.

This article describes the computational mainframe of the robot in terms of genomes and neural networks. This source also presents many different mathematical equations that can be used in order to guide the robot through the maze. This source also presents information relating to how the data from T-maze navigation can be used in order to navigate more complex mazes in the real world. This source will be used in order to find some of the math and programing techniques necessary for allowing a robot to navigate the maze.

This article is an article discussing a sensory method of navigating mazes known as optical flow. This article is written by Andrew P. Duchon, a professor in the Department of Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences at Brown University. This article details how the process of Optical flow works on a computational level in addition to describing how it can be used both in the context of small scale robotic maze navigation and in the large scale movement towards automation. The article details many different methods in which Optical flow can be used for navigational purposes. This information will be tremendously useful when coming up with navigational algorithms.

This algorithm was used by graduate student Kyung min Han under the supervision of Dr. Robert W. McLaren at the University of Missouri Columbia. This article also discusses an algorithm known as Genetic Algorithm in which a robot can determine which possible navigation solution is the most efficient. This article also discusses how this solution is used in nature, bringing up the examples such as Ants and the Human genome. This article is useful because it provides an example of someone conducting similar research to mine, using a specific algorithm.

This source will also be useful for gaining insight into how the robot computationally processes the information it observed and use it. This source will be tremendously useful when trying to figure out the navigational algorithms.

I will be using this source in order to find useful aspects of the Trémaux Maze Solving Algorithm in order to find which aspects will be useful in creating my own personal algorithm. Such information will be incredibly useful when writing a paper and creating a presentation about the real world applications of my project. Additionally, this source provides many useful algorithms that can be used in order to allow a robot to navigate mazes. These algorithms could potentially be used in order to figure out how the robot will computationally navigate the maze.

     ​For my Capstone project, I decided to work with Project Home/Hub of Hope to raise awareness of the plight of homelessness in the city of Philadelphia, and collect donations for the people that find themselves in such circumstances. I decided to do something for those people less fortunate than others. Over the summer of 2018, I interned at Philadelphia International Airport where I participated in a Sock Drive. We collected 600 pairs of socks from the people in the office. My co-workers and I went to the Hub of Hope Organization and gave out the socks. Seeing the smiles on people’s faces and how happy they were because of the donations really hit me hard. In that moment I felt humbled by their gratitude and happy to have been a part of such a humanitarian move. This inspired me to do something of my own Initiative. So When school started we were asked to think of what we were going to do for our Capstone Project.  I went to the Hub of Hope and approached Ms. Emily Hopkins about my idea for the Capstones project. She told me that it would be lovely if I were to do something like this and they needed hygiene products. Homeless people are in great need of hygiene products. So I agreed to collect the products through donations from family and friends. I was able to collect a large size Uhaul box which contained feminine products, oral products, body products as well as certain clothing items. On April 30th, I presented the Hub of Hope Organization with the donated items. On behalf of the Organization, the receptionist at Hub of Hope was truly grateful for the box of donations.

My capstone took many turns and went through many transformations to turn into what it is now. Throughout the year, I knew that I wanted to help inform people and I knew that I wanted to spread a message. I think that I managed to accomplish that with this eventual design. I decided after months of research, talks, and personal deliberation that the best way to structure this senior project would be to use our school's missions statement "Learn. Create. Lead."

I learned more and more about the political process, elections we  as a nation soon will have to face, and am still probing the minds of some elected officials all over the country throughout the three levels of government. In an effort to create, I did what I know best: write. I managed to write letters to three elected officials with previous proposals attached to push for legislation that I support and to hear what they think. And finally, I managed to organize and lead a course educating my fellow seniors on political alignment, policy, and leadership spreading the message that they have to thoroughly get involved in politics if they want their voices heard.

Below, please feel free to look through some of my documents. The outline should have links to my three letters (along with the politician they were sent to and the similar piece of legislation I'm asking them to introduce/support) and the link to view the presentation I used to guide the classes I taught. Note on the bibliography, some of the annotations no longer apply as it was written before the final product was thought of. Helping out the community and preparing for my future

Project Abstract

For my Inquiry Capstone Project, I wanted to combine helping my community and preparing for my future as an Electrician. I joined a trade organization called First builders and they prepare people for their future trade jobs. My project contains two components, There is a tutoring portion, where I would go every monday night for 2 hours to receive help from professional trade people who prepare us to take the final test for whichever trade we are studying for. We then apply this math to the physical part to my project. The other part to my project is the physical projects that I’ve worked on. One of these projects is a new Sanctuary for the Kingdom Restoration Ministries (KRM) church in Northeast Philadelphia. My other project I worked on was installing new lockers for my old school, John Story Jenks Academy for the Arts and Sciences located on Germantown Avenue in Chestnut hill. I learned many things during construction process such as, Safety precautions, the Application process for the actual apprenticeship program, the math that is involved, and how to properly use tools.

Having tools with you really come in handy because you feel like you can fix anything with them. Tools relate to my Capstone because I need them when making the Sanctuary.

Fall protection is one the most important things make sure that you have before working on the project that you are working on. Fall protection falls under the OSHA category. It includes things like Guardrails and the different parts like the toeboard, mid rail, and top rail. Using a  Harness can also prevent a fall. This relates to my capstone because It requires to know a lot about fall protection. You need to know how to apply fall protection equipment to you because it can save you from severe injuries and death.

It talks about how steel and Concrete are used everywhere but wood is the material that is the most common to use. The walls for the sanctuary that I am working on will be made out of steel.

It is a really reliable source that gives you good advice about what to do and what not to do during the interview. When working, It is important to wear safety equipment at all times to avoid injuries. This is another source that relates to OSHA training that they give us in our program. It talks about the different types of equipment like headgear, eye and face protection, hand and skin protection, hearing protection, and respiratory protection. This relates to my capstone project because it is mandatory to have equipment on at all times on a worksite and it is important to know how to apply them all.

I found this source useful because It explains how to remain safe when working at extreme heights. Heights can be an intimidating thing and most people are scared of them. This source tells you all about the Do’s and Don’ts when working at heights. It is unsafe to work at these heights without any fall protection. Fall protection is required for a worker that is working higher than 6 feet. It gives advice about situations where it is not safe to work. It talks about the law that is for working at heights which are called “Work at Height Regulations 2005.” The purpose of this law is to prevent death and injury from heights. This source relates to my capstone because while we build the walls for the room, we work at high heights.

This Website talks about the Safety requirements, The Application, The apprenticeship Model, etc. It also provides information about what the program consist of so people can decide if this is what they really want to do because the trade business is hard and not for everyone.

Homelessness In Center City

For my Capstone project, I surveyed 100 people from the SLA community in order to tackle their misconceptions about homelessness. I created a survey using strategies that I learned in Statistics class and collected the responses via Google Forms. The questions that I asked addressed people’s personal experiences with the homeless people of Center City as well as their opinions about what causes it and whether or not they feel like they can do anything to help. I shared these responses with a close friend of mine who has been homeless for two decades. I then interviewed him in order to incorporate quotes from it into my final product.

Next, I read information about homelessness in the city of Philadelphia and how we can help locally. I researched homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and food banks around the city. I created a list that includes different shelters, volunteer programs, and organizations that almost anyone can get involved in. I also researched in order to learn more facts about hunger, hygiene, and drugs in relation to poverty. This collection of information taught me that there is a lot more that my community can do to help other people receive some of the basic things that we truly take for granted.

I’ve always been criticized for having friendships with homeless people. These criticisms drove me to become curious about the misconceptions of the homeless community within my school community. For my final product, I analyzed the data that I acquired from my survey and used my resources to create a description of the misconceptions about homelessness and how we, as students, alumni, parents, teachers, and faculty, can help the cause of ending homelessness. In Philadelphia, homelessness is such an epidemic that we often become numb against the harsh realities that surround us. There ARE ways that we can help and I wanted to communicate that through my Capstone.

  • My vision was for people to use dance to express themselves for when times get rough or when they just wanna let all their feelings out. First, I taught at my dance school Philly Movements Dance Company to kids ages 2-6. I taught ballet, tap, jazz, and tumbling. This was an experience that opened my eyes to dance. I learned that no matter what age you are dance helps you develop the type of person you are. Looking at the kids beautiful faces every Saturday was not easy because I had to deal with the screaming, crying, and the “ I want my mom” statement.  Then I created a mini course for the students at my school so that they would have a outlet. This mini course was so much fun. I may have screamed at them and told them that I was done but in reality I couldn’t just give up in them. I told them about all the problems that I was having leading up to the final performance. I learned that when trying to put on a show it would cause so many challenges and I would have to talk to adults about how everything would work out. They performed at the BSU 2nd Annual Gala which was a success. Future Advice for upcoming seniors, Use your resources to the best of your ability because the school, family and friends will be your guidance and help.

David Roberts Capstone

Last summer, I made an outdoor enclosure for my cats. It has stood outside my house since. After showing it off to my family and friends, I received a lot of positive feedback. More people that I had imagined showed interest in the idea, and I took this opportunity to create a small business of sorts around the Catio. 
My first step was to create two basic models. I took the design from the Catio I made for my cats and improved it, making it more suitable for creation and distribution. I then had to evaluate the cost. I found out how much wood and screen I would need for each design and added up the cost. I then decided on a retail price that would satisfy my needs for building materials and an hourly wage. All this I combined into a website that is currently published at www.tinyurl.com/phillycatios and then into a brochure.
My first customer is a doctor at my mother’s vet. She had expressed interest in a Catio, and after some back and forth over email, I got to work. I visited her home and took pictures and measurements of where she wanted the Catio to be placed. I made a custom model that fit her needs, and priced it accordingly. After purchasing the required materials, I spent most of Easter break building, painting, and enclosing the Catio. And then on the 28th, I took my creation back to her home and installed it.

Summary

The senior capstone was stressful, exciting and went well. My original plan for my capstone was creating my personal capstone but since our ultimate team had a lot of tournament. It was an option that opened up and I was allowed to become a director of an ultimate tournament. I had to spend lunch and after time with Mr. Lehmann. Overall, we spend a lot of time figuring out how to get the following items like trophies, food, and water Jugs. We had ask a lot of favors from Pada ultimate organization. There were 18 teams from D1 to D3 and Girl, the boy division. The tournament raised 2,000 dollars for SLA ultimate community and the teams had a lot of fun. The varsity boy had a very successful weekend with making the finals. The capstone was a great learning experience for sports management which would be my major in college. I want to give thanks to all teams that participated in the tournament and also Mr. Lehmann and Jereme Mason

​Abstract:
For my capstone, I created and edited an allegorical animation. This wasn't something I had planned since freshman year, it was something I decided to do on a whim. I had been inspired by a video essay that I watched about Genndy Tartakovsky and his process on animation. Immediately after finishing the video, I decided to make my own animation. It turned out to be one of the most fun art project that I've done in a very long time. It was incredibly challenging going into making an animation without any real prior knowledge of animation. There was a lot of trial and error involved, and I learned a lot and developed my animation skills. It was a very valuable experience and I am ecstatic that I chose to do this and followed through.

This will be used as a guide during the actual animating of the video.

This source is very important because it means that the animation needs to create this same sense of unification in its audience in order to have the impact necessary to educating them.

It details how a lot of visual information can ignite other parts of the brain responsible for other senses such as smell, touch, and even hearing. It provides the example of Michelangelo’s Expulsion from Paradise and how a lot of people who go see it in person tend to tense their wrist after seeing it, and in the painting, the man has his wrist flexed backwards in defense. This source is essential in understanding how I can create an impact on a chemical level to create a more memorable experience, creating a longer lasting impact for the message that is being provided in the final product.

This source has a list of tips on creating the best possible installation art. This was a source I used before I had changed my project to an animation. Previously, I was going to do an art exhibit, with the same inquiry question in hand and do a series of mixed media pieces of art. This source, however, is still useful because a lot of the ideas that this article brings up also relates with any allegorical piece of art. In installation art, one must account for the entire space, leaving no space left meaningless. This same logic applies to allegorical pieces of work because it’s important that everything in the allegory has a meaning to it and that it doesn’t mislead its audience.

This book goes into a lot of detail on how to use art and any medium to engage all of the senses and how to use one sense to engage another sense. There’s a lot of material in terms of the scientific, philosophical, and physiological explanation of the relationship between art and how humans perceive and experience this sensation. This will be used as a reference for the major thumbnails that are essential in teaching the audience on the lesson the animation is trying to present. It is a reference used by many artists who aim for more meaningful products.

This video will be used as a guide for what styles and stories will reach a much wider audience and to learn from the mistakes of previous animators.

America and Japan are superpowers in terms of animation considering the majority of the most influential animations have come from both countries. Again, this will be used as a reference of studying what makes an animation influential and as a reference for the mistakes made by many previous animators. It’s important to learn to not repeat the mistakes of those animators as is the point of learning history, and it’s extremely useful in making sure that future animations better the ones that were presented previously.

That way, the animator isn’t taking on too much and is pacing themselves in constructing the animation. Then, the process is much more refined, cleaner, and easier to keep track of.

This article is another really good article that gives a lot of advice and tips on good storytelling, which is essential in animations, especially ones that have allegorical elements associated with it. It talks a lot about how the plot is very important because if there is no prominent issue, then the audience will have no reason to watch nor to be actively engaged in the story that is being presented. This will also be used as a reference in the storyboarding and writing of the animation and making sure that the animation has all of the essential elements of storytelling.

This video provides a much better visual explanation of animation and the roadblocks that one will come across when animation, and provides a lot of tips and advice on getting over or through those roadblocks, improving the efficiency of the development of the animation and ensuring that no obvious errors are made or seen. This video will, again, be used as a reference in the beginning of the animation process, when the animator practices before delving into the actual final product. It will be used as so to make sure that the development process goes smoothly and without frustration, improving the efficiency of the animation.

Autumn Lor Capstone

I created a mini-course at Science Leadership Academy Middle School (SLAMS). Although I couldn’t do my exact idea, I used the space that I had. I wanted the kids to be as safe and happy as possible.

My original idea was to create a lacrosse sports clinic. It was supposed to teach kids how to play the sport but because of the limited space, it would have been difficult to play. I was given a small room similar to the size of a storage closet. So instead of teaching the sport, we talked about how to stay “fit”. Staying fit means a lot of things. We did stretches, exercises, and learned how to eat right.

Over the 8-week long program, we alternated between legs and arms every week. When we worked on legs, we played games like The Fox vs The Squirrel, it’s similar to tag but there’s a fox that is trying to get the squirrel, and The Great Wind Blows, a mixture of musical chairs and show-and-tell. It keeps their legs moving. For arms, we played a lot of hand games. I taught them how to play Numbers and have competitions on which group can go the longest. Along with that after the mini-workout, I gave the kids a snack as a healthy reward. Some snacks we shared were fruit and trail mix.

SLAMS would usually have a performance for their last day of mini-courses, but it was canceled because not all of the classes were ready. Instead, we passed around a basketball outside. This was a really amazing experience for me because I have a trail an error in trying to get the kids attention. I have to learn about what they liked in order for them to enjoy their mini-course. In the end, I felt like most of the kids enjoy these activities as well as learning about their bodies and health.

Sarah Berg Capstone

My capstone was centered around the prevalence of a stigma along with general discomfort and misunderstandings surrounding the discussion of mental illness in the SLA community. To address this, I held a Mental Health Visibility and Education Day. For the educational aspect, I researched numerous disorders using the DSM-5 and created posters that provided simple definitions of each one. For the visibility aspect, I made pins and stickers that were color-coded to represent different illnesses and encouraged people to wear them on the day. The idea behind this visual identification was that mental illnesses are usually hard to see, but on that day, suffering people would feel less alone and others will see the reach of the illnesses. My ultimate goal, however, was to spark conversations about the topic. I believe that my capstone was successful. While I cannot definitively say that people are now more educated, I did see many kids stopping and looking at the posters, and there was a larger amount of participation in the Visibility Day than I anticipated, as I gave out 73 pins and more stickers. In fact, I had to stop halfway through the day and print more of the white stickers, which signified general support of the cause. Most importantly, I witnessed and took part in several conversations about mental health that I normally do not see happening.

Ariana Flores Capstone

I have reflected heavily on my high school experience as my graduation approaches. There were valuable lessons I have learned and skills I have attained throughout my time at SLA, such as learning how to partake in a productive conversation, understanding the nuances of group projects, and meeting demanding deadlines in short time frames can prepare students for the working world. However, I could not deny the fact that some elements could be added or modified to SLA’s schooling and support structure in order to better aid the student population in finding what they want to pursue after high school. Therefore, I decided to focus my capstone around how SLA prepares its students for life after graduation, and how certain areas of its preparation can be improved.

I constructed three surveys that I sent out to juniors, seniors, and alumni, asking them question about SLA’s curriculum, capstones, SLA’s college assistance, internships, etc. From there, I formulated charts and conducted research around life after high school on a national scale as well as information about the current and future job market in order to compare and contrast that information with the data I extracted from the responses of current and former SLA students. I synthesized all of this information into the form of a report that provides reasonable suggestions for changes in SLA from not just me, but other members of the student body.

NMN podcast (what is the what)

         So in this podcast we are going to be talking about what went on in "what is the what." In our  podcast we are going to talk about some themes that occurred in the book that really stuck out to us. We had a brief summary of our book and main points that really stuck out to us. Julia Furman Capstone

For my Capstone project, I decided to use my own personal hobby and attempt to present it through YouTube. I picked out and continued to work on two stories that I had created, and was planning on sharing them in YouTube videos. The videos were going to have the audio of me reading each “episode” of the story, and the visual component would have been art relating to it that I drew. However, this plan did not work out, because it takes a lot of time to create what I consider quality work and I also had schoolwork to do, so I was unable to make the videos in time. However, I was able to fully learn why content creators on YouTube often take so long to make videos. And I still have the stories to present as artifacts. As for the video plan, I still plan on making the videos, just not anytime soon.



Story 1: Immortal Night: The Series

Episode 1: The First Night

It is the stroke of midnight. A young boy emerges from the depths of the forest into a clear spot up in the mountains. His light skin is marked by scratches, his brown hair is unkempt, and his green shirt and light brown pants are tattered. He paused to catch his breath.

Once his breathing reached a calmer state, he looked back in the woods. His amber eyes searched for even the slightest movement amongst the trees.

I have lived up here for as long as I can remember. Ever since I ran away. I don’t remember where I came from, or why I was running. What I do remember is feeling a strong sense of fear. However, with the help of a new friend, my fear disappeared.

Suddenly, a rustling came from within the forest. Sensing danger, the boy shapeshifted into a brown-furred wolf-like creature and growled.

“Oh, a lycan!” a voice called out from the trees. A boy with pale skin, black hair, red eyes, and wearing a black suit with a white dress shirt and a red tie emerged from the forest.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you,” the boy said, revealing two glowing, white, sharp fangs. The wolf boy stopped growling, but did not change back.

I could tell that he wasn’t going to hurt me, but I didn’t want to lower my guard just yet. I have to admit, I was a bit intimidated by his fangs.

“I think he went this way!” a new voice yelled out from the forest.

“Uh oh, they’re here. Let’s hide!” the boy exclaimed, grabbing the wolf by the scruff of his neck and dragging him behind a large rock. The two watched from behind the rock as two armored humans wielding swords ran out of the forest.

“Are you sure about this?” one soldier, with light colored skin and blue eyes, asked. “He’s only a little kid…”

“He’s still a vampire!” the other guard, who had light colored skin and brown eyes, responded.

“I am so captured,” the boy quietly said. The wolf narrowed his amber eyes.

“Arooooo!” the little lycan howled into the night.

“Wolves,” the blue-eyed guard said. “Let’s go!”

“Don’t be such a wimp, Caleb!” the brown-eyed guard responded. “There’s only one!”

The lycan howled again. Multiple howls echoed out from everywhere, from the forest behind them to the mountains ahead. It was as though there was an entire pack, but in reality, there were no wolves at all.

“You were saying?” Caleb asked.

“Run!” the brown-eyed guard exclaimed. The two guards ran back into the forest.

“Thanks for saving me,” the vampire boy said. “How did you know you can do that?”

“Umm...lucky guess?”

“My name’s Jonathan.”

“Moonstrike.”

“Good to meet you, Moonstrike. Listen, I have to go. I promised my parents I would be back before sunrise. But, I’ll come check on you tomorrow night. See you then!”

With that, Jonathan shapeshifted into a bat and flew off, towards a huge, imposing castle on top of the mountain. Moonstrike watched Jonathan as he flew off.

I can’t remember what drove me here, but I decided to make this clearing my territory. Something about it made me feel safe. That’s possibly because it’s the place where I met my best friend.

Moonstrike turned away from the castle when his new friend was long out of sight, and howled once more.


Story 2: Minecraft: New Dawn

Season 1, Episode 1 - The First Day

A young girl, about 16 or 17, lay unconscious on the beach as the sun rose. Her brown hair was unkempt and her light skin was covered with scratches. She was clutching a plush creeper and a silver, star-shaped jewel.

Her blue eyes opened, and the sun was the first thing she saw. Her memory was a little foggy; she couldn’t remember what happened.

She stood up on her feet and looked around. A forest was right behind the beach, and she could see mountains in the distance. The ocean was just that - a great expanse of water. There was a boat floating just off the shore.

“I must have rode that boat to get here,” she said, “but why am I here? Where was I going in the first place? I won’t find out by standing around here. Gathering resources should be the best place to start.”

She walked over to a nearby tree and gathered its wood. She converted the five logs into 20 wooden planks, and decided to try to combine four of the planks together. This resulted in her creating a workbench.

With a bit of thinking, she decided that her next move should be building a shelter. She gathered more wood and turned them into planks, and used them to build a small square shelter. While she was working, she noticed that a few saplings and apples had fallen from the leaves of the first tree she had taken down. She gathered the items, and planted a sapling where the tree had been.

Suddenly, when she was building the walls of her shelter, she remembered something.

My name is Julia.

She noticed the chest next to where she woke up shortly after this realization. She finished applying the layer of wood planks she was working on, jumped down to the ground, and walked over to investigate.

Julia looked inside the chest. Inside was a wooden sword, a stone axe, a few wooden planks, some apples, some raw fish, a roll of bandages, and a note. The note read: For you, my daughter.

Though it could have been for anyone, Julia couldn’t help but feel it was made for her. It was at this point she remembered something else: her father had disappeared. Could this chest be from him?

Julia took the items and note and walked back to her unfinished house. She took out two blocks to make an entrance and walked in, as the sun was about to set. She placed the crafting table on the floor and began working with her materials. She managed to create a few sticks, and a wooden pickaxe. She used the remaining planks, aside from the two planks from the entrance, to give her house a roof.

Suddenly, Julia heard a frightened clucking coming from the outside. She ran outside to see what was going on.

A chicken was at the edge of the forest. The chicken was cornered by four other chickens with glowing red eyes. The chicken clucked fearfully as his attackers closed in.

Thinking fast, Julia drew her sword and lept into action. With a few slashes, she took down the red-eyed chickens. They dropped 8 raw chickens and 12 feathers in total. Julia grabbed the items and the chicken and ran into her house, blocking off the exit with the two remaining planks.

“I should probably put a door there,” Julia said to herself. She heard the calls of monsters from outside. She really didn’t want to fight an army of creatures of the night, and she wasn’t in the shape to do it, either. “Well, since we’re going to be here a while, we might as well get to know each other,” she said as she set the chicken down on the ground and sat down in front of him. “My name’s Julia. What’s yours.”

The chicken looked at his savior. He could tell that she wasn’t one of them, and she seemed trustworthy so far.

“Okay, I can’t speak chicken, so I’ll just call you Chester because look like a Chester. I’m having trouble remembering my past, so all I know is that my dad went missing, and he’s apparently here.”

Chester looked at her curiosity, as if to say, “Is that it?” Julia looked at the sword in her hand.

“Well, I was pretty good with the sword back there. So, maybe I was some kind of fighter, or even a soldier. That would have been cool.”

Julia put away her sword, thinking that since she didn’t really have anything else to do, she might as well treat her wounds, eat something, and sleep. Using the roll of bandages, Julia cleaned up the scratches on her face, and bandaged her arms after taking off her hoodie. As she put her sweater back on, Julia noticed that Chester’s leg was injured, and used the remaining bandages to treat it.

Julia munched on one of her apples and laid down on the grassy ground, and Chester settled down next to her, careful to be gentle with his injured leg.

As the girl and the chicken settled down and closed their eyes for the night, two watched the house. One was happy she got his message, and was longing to contact her.

The other thought she was certainly an interesting newcomer. She was able to slaughter Luther’s minions with relative ease, so she was a capable fighter. And she was cute, no question there. Those bright blue eyes could light up even his darkest night. Anyway, she should be careful, as he knew what happened to her father. As long as the girl in the dragon hoodie doesn’t get too curious, she should be fine. Otherwise, she and her pet chicken will have more than creepers to worry about…

This is a playlist for The Missing Light, an animated web series by YouTuber Blixemi. This web series is actually what partially inspired Immortal Night: The Series, one of the two stories I’m writing for my capstone. The Missing Light and IN:TS share several similar story elements, such as the main character being a wolf (or in the case of Immortal Night, a lycan) and having a special light-based power. Of course, there are a few differences, such as the fact that it is set in a kingdom of vampires and lycans rather than wolves, humans play a role in Immortal Night as opposed to being absent in The Missing Light, and the fact that the main villain isn’t very prevalent early on in the series. The point is, this hidden gem of YouTube may not be finished, but it heavily inspired my own work.

This website informs of the Fossils and Archeology Revival Mod, which focuses on adding dinosaurs, fossils, and other archeological elements to the game. I am fascinated by archeology and anything related to the ancient past, and along with allowing the player to live out their own version of Jurassic Park, it adds a number of other extinct animals to the game, which I can appreciate. Dinosaurs don’t appear much until the later reasons, but this mod still plays a key factor in the series.

This is one of the websites I use to research for Minecraft: New Dawn. As the name implies, New Dawn is heavily inspired by Minecraft, and a few of my personal favorite modifications (or “mods”) for the block-based sandbox building game. The Ice and Fire Mod adds dragons and other mythical beasts, making Minecraft just a little more legendary. Along with archeology, I also have a fascination with mythology, especially anything that has to do with dragons. And the mod, and also the F&A mod, adds lore into the game, and lore is a game element I always love. The influence the Ice and Fire Mod has on the series is clear early on, as the main character encounters two creatures from the mod within the first ten episodes.

As the name would imply, Immortal Night is the online roleplaying game that Immortal Night: The Series is loosely based on. I say “loosely based on” because the series is really based on the image for the game I had in my head after reading the tutorial page. Namely, I had assumed that the game was an MMORPG in a similar vein as the game, RuneScape. Elements of the game mentioned on the tutorial page, such as the market and the warring Houses, are seen in the series, but that is where the similarities stop. I have done a little more research on the game itself, but the series is purely me reading the tutorial page and seeing where my imagination and my pencil took me.

And this is Jess, or Aphmau,’s YouTube channel. I discovered her just last summer, and she has been my favorite YouTuber ever since. She mainly does gameplay videos, but the thing I really like is her roleplay series. They feature an overarching story that develops its characters as its progresses, which is exactly the kind of story I love. The reason I put her channel as a source is because I use the stories she creates as inspiration for my own, particularly the lore on the werewolves seen in New Dawn, and it would only be fair to give proper credit to the source of my inspiration. That, and Jess’s husband, Jason, gets angry if he thinks someone’s copying his and his wife’s work, and I’d prefer to avoid incurring the wrath of Jason.

Now, this particular mod holds a special place in my heart because it is what first inspired my fascination with mods. The Mo’ Creatures mod does exactly what it says on the package: it adds more creatures into the game. In my opinion, this simple addition adds so much more life into the game. This was especially true a few years ago, when there wasn’t really a lot in the game’s oceans. Mods like this one add a new spin on an already fun game, giving the player so much more to do. That is the reason I use mods like these as parts of my story.

Africana Studies Capstone - Afi Koffi

When I was first challenged to come up with a capstone, I remember feeling very lost. Capstones were something I knew was there and would be quickly approaching but in September of my senior year, I still didn’t really know what I wanted to do. But one day, it kind of just hit me. This year I had the pleasure of being the SAT of an African American History class. And I felt early on like I did my freshman year, unimpressed and underwhelmed.

My inquiry question is how can students learn about West Africa in a way that surpasses African American History class? I asked this question because as a freshman I felt underwhelmed by the fact that African American History started with slavery. To me, it felt wrong to define a group of people’s history to the moment their oppression began. They were their own people before the mid-Atlantic slave trade with their own societies and cultures and to neglect that is to give in to the trend of letting white people tell the story. My capstone seeks to expose people to the culture of West Africa pre-slavery and show the influence it has on our lives today. Themes of West African cultures are present in everyday food, music, and literature. As such, those are the units present in my two mini-course sessions.

I’ve decided to do this as my capstone because I think that it is important to understand Africa as more than what it is portrayed as in the media. Many things that exist now in the American culture are derived from West African practices so it’d be beneficial to see how all these cultures connect.

Paulin J. Hountondji discusses some of her reservations with African Studies. One of her main issues being that oftentimes, African Studies was not being conducted by Africans. Rather, it was a way for white people to “analyze” black people, generally in an unflattering and politically motivated way. By doing this, they continue to show exactly why African Studies is needed; so that black people can have a voice in regards to their own histories and cultures.

This contemporary African site gives insight into the overlapping that exist between West African Music and current music in America. This was used to drive home the significance of the mini-course to the students. West African culture should be studied not separately in and of itself but as an entity that stands on its own and contributes to other cultures. Many of the songs on the site were popular in the US and many of the students recognized them.

This source worked as a lesson plan influence. In this plan, they highlight the themes and rhythmic patterns that are often found in West African music. Though the full source was not available, this short excerpt gave insight and inspiration for the path of the mini-course. After seeing this site, the purpose of the course changed a little from learning to learning and performing.

This site is a transition of an interview with Chef Pierre Thiam. As a chef, he speaks of the influences of West African food on modern American cuisine. He even states that there is a lot of ignorance when it comes to this fact. Many don’t know that things like coffee and watermelon weren’t necessarily originated in America. Using this source will encourage members of the mini-course to evaluate the food they food and their origins and influences.

This source features an excerpt from Who Needs Africana Studies by Martin Staniland. It discusses the need for Africana studies, how African history was ignored for centuries, and how it exist to shed light on the perspective of black people. The creation of the Africana Studies mini-course correlates with these ideas and seeks to introduce students to a previous neglected culture.

The department of African studies at the University of Notre Dame explain what African Studies entails and its purpose. They, like many universities have, followed the upward thread of African Studies. In many universities, it is offered as a major. Students shouldn’t have to wait to be introduced to African Studies in adulthood. This mini-course allows them to be immersed now.
