Handbook cover PDF
By doing this project I would be able to pass on my knowledge of being organizer of EduCon to Co-Chair’s to come. Someone who may have the potential but not know exactly what to do in what steps this Manual/Handbook will help them.

C-Span, Q2 BM "The V-Word" Video

Posted by Alaya White in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, January 19, 2012 at 9:06 pm
http://www.scienceleadership.org/blog/BM:5

I chose this topic because I felt like it was something that was often discussed in debates and it effects me because people are so sensitive to the topic. I liked that it effects me and other females my age. As far as most interesting, the C-Span footage we extracted for the video was interesting to watch and analyze. People's different responses to questions about sexual education were interesting to listen to. One fact that was ridiculously interesting was that within 14 year old females and males, many admitted to having more than one sexual partners. We had to use these graphs, facts and data to prove our point that Sex Education should be taught. Period. To improve this project, we could've used random peoples opinions in our video. But we ran into problems with timing, so that ruled out that idea.

Lobbying Post #4: Fracking

Posted by Alaya White in American Government - Laufenberg on Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 11:35 pm
For this portion of lobbying Ms. Julia Boyer & I have teamed up to organise 3 things.
A petition, fundraise, and a protest. So far we have collected several signatures for our petition. We have planned to send the list of signatures directly to Governor Corbett in order for him to jump on board and support us with every Anti-Fracking move we make.

We also plan to sell Buttons, T-Shirts, Bumper Stickers, etc. in order to promote the protest and have other citizens on board with the Anti-Fracking movement as well. And We also plan to especially inform people who are not aware of what may occur with their drinking water.

As far as the Protest goes, we plan to take a bus trip to rally in Harrisburg in order to get Gov. Corbett's attention so he can know how serious we are about this matter.

All of these move combined should gather awareness within the media, which would help us to get other supporters.

Teaching Certification

Posted by Alaya White in American Government - Laufenberg on Thursday, December 8, 2011 at 11:12 pm
TeachingPositionsInPABrittany and I worked together on this project displaying the process of filing for a teaching permit. We tried to make our flow chart as simple as possible so it wont be too complicated. As far as the paperwork goes, it was pretty straight forward, and easy to fill out. If I could change one thing I would change the application fee. I was really surprised to see that applicants have to pay $100.

Lobbying Lopic #3-Fracking!

Posted by Alaya White in American Government - Laufenberg on Friday, November 25, 2011 at 8:06 am
So far this is an okay year for the people who are saying Frack NO! In Philadelphia we have had a rally, passing out buttons and bumper stickers, gettin the word out with information flyers and pamphlets, etc. but we have not yet reached out goal. Fracking has not come to a complete hault yet, be we are working toward it every step of the way. Working harder and harder so that our water can stay as clean as possible. We are trying to stay as far away from the results the people in the movie-documentary "Gasland"

Below is a shocking video of the effects of fracking on local drinking waters.
In order to have a great compacting outcome We need to contact all the oil companies who participate in Fracking. We could also have Senator Vincent Hughes who could guide us in contacting the right people and be by our side with every step of the way with making change.

Hughes
We can influence citizens of the community to join us in the movement against fracking in general and show them graphics and videos about what it can do to their drinking water.

I live in District 4 and Curtis Jones represents me.
Curtis Jones hosted and sponsored a fracking resolution in order to forbid fracking from the Marcellus Shale.

Curtis Jones and I both have similar opinions about fracking. It has a negative impact on the environment. He is attempting to make changes with the power he has as a Councilman.

The area (District 4) Councilman Jones represents in where he went to high school (Overbrook High School)
What Councilman Jones has done prior to his Councilman position:
Councilman Jones has served on numerous boards and executive committees including the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority’s Minority Advisory Committee, Genesis II Board of Directors, and the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau Minority Advisory Council. He has also served as co-Chair of the Philadelphia MED week Committee.

Councilman Jones has served in city government throughout the past seven mayoral administrations; the councilman has been invited to the White House by both the Clinton and Bush Administration.  He has also addressed the State House by way of several of its committees on issues germane to Philadelphia, giving his insight on Economic Development.

As a result of his numerous years of experience in the Philadelphia Economic Development landscape, Councilman Jones has become one of City council’s most formidable advocates for community development and educational stability.

Above is my Food Slide.
Just recently i have tried Alligator & Loved it Which is where the Alligator graphic come from, and also the Food Rule "Don't Be Afraid to Try New Things". It's always great to branch out past the normal things you are used to.

For the Recipe I made Baked Chicken:

2lbs.- free range chicken thighs

3 -small organic red potatoes

1/2-organic red onion

1-cup of chicken broth

1-sweet Red bell pepper

1-clove of garlic

organic black pepper corns w/ grinder (Black pepper)

bottle of organic extra virgin olive oil

Reynolds Baking Bags

Prepare the chicken by sprinkling it with grinded black peppercorns

Sauteé 1/4 of the onion chopped, half the red pepper(with seeds), & chopped garlic in olive oil.

(while you are waitng you can slice your potatoes thinly.)

Once that in finshed and browned, prepare the skillet with more olive oil to fry the chicken.

You plan on just browning the skin , not frying completely.

Once the skin is browned, you need to prepare your baking bag,put the baking bag inside of the roasting pan,  cover the bottom of the bag with potatoes then the slices of the other half of the onion and peppers. Add a layer of chicken to cover the bottom layer. each thigh should be touching a potato.

sprinkle the sauteéd peppers and onions on top of the chicken.

Put chicken broth on top of all the food in the bag using a turkey baster.

tie the bag and cut slits for air holes.

Put in a 375 degree oven for about 40 minutes. check periodically.

A few words to describe me meal:

  • tasty-of course!
  • economical & cheap-this only costed me about $15 (every ingredient was purchased from Whole Foods market)
  • filling- not only do you get a main course of chicken, but you have sides with potatoes, onions, and peppers
  • complete-as I said before, the meal is complete all you need is something to drink.

The body does not take long to digest chicken. Chicken is not a heavy meat. Peppers onions and garlic and tasty flavors which are rather healthy. If you ate nothing but this meal everyday you might lack calcium in your diet.

All the ingredients were local and organically grown. The chicken was also free range.

During this unit about Food in Science and Society, I have been a lot more open minded when it comes to food. In the Food Inc. movie we saw a lot of animal cruelty when it came to chcikcen and cows. Cows were often swung around by their limbs and no one really "cared" about the animal that was about to be slaughtered. Another thing I found interesteing was the fact that fish were being fed cord in order to "beef them up" so they would be worth more in the market. They did the same to cows, which would cause them to put a hole in the side of the cow in order to essentially extract the waste, and these helps the cow a little because cows with holes in them last longer.

It was interesting in this unit to see everyones opinions with discussions and with their presentation of their portion of the movie.

This unit essentially changed my view on many foods I eat. For example I eat beef a lot less, especially because it takes 7 days for it to digest inside you body. YUCK!

Food Quality Protection Act-Alaya White

Food Quality Protection Act on Prezi

  • Explain your decision making for choosing the bill.
I wanted to select something that had to do with food.

  • Why did you choose the particular presentation format?
I felt like it would be a great representation of the timeline format by using a Prezi.

  • What challenges did you overcome in completing the project?
I had about a day & a half to change my topic for the project. I feel likt this was an obstacle, and had I had enough time with this one topic I would've went deeper into the project & detail with the topic.

  • How would you do the project differently if you had to do it over again?
I would start fresh with more time. Maybe use another general topic instead of laws & bills about food.

  • What did the research and investigation tell you about the creation process... from idea to bill to law?
A lot of the time, bills go back and forth in order to change bits and pieces to make it pass a certain stage in the billing process.

  • Was the process easier or harder than you imagined based on your particular bill/law research?
This was much harder than I imagine with shorter time to change the Law selected.

Overall I think I could've done better.  I know I had a shorter time than most with the benchmark, with changing my topic and everything, and that had a big impact on the finished product.

Lobbying Against Fracking

Process%20of%20hydraulic%20fracturing
Process%20of%20hydraulic%20fracturing
Fracking is a shortened version for Hydraulic Fracturing, which is a process to drill horizontally for natural gas. Above is a diagram which displays the process is short detail. In Pennsylvania fracking is happening a lot more often because it was discovered that natural gas was right under our feet under a huge rock called the Marcellus Shale. If we keep drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale, it ground will become more and more unstable. This is horrible because many people live close to, near, and even maybe on top op portions of the Marcellus Shale. If the foundation of the houses are unstable then it may be dangerous for people to live in these houses. Fracking also has gone wrong by it contaminating the drinking water of many homes. Although the human body is made up of 70% water, water is a very large necessity in order for Humans to survive. How will a human survive without water clean enough for them to drink coming out of their own faucet? Some would say that if that water is contaminated, couldn't people just boil the water and then it would be pure enough for one to drink? But I would respond to that by saying that the drinking water coming out of the faucet is contaminated with Natural Gas which cause the water to be flammable so if one attempts to boil the water they may end up blowing their entire kitchen up in flames. To view an example of this click here. (Links to excerpt of the documentary "Gasland")

There have been many protest about fracking. Most recently there was one in Center City. There was an anti-fracking rally (for more info on the rally click here)
20110908_inq_he1frack08-a
20110908_inq_he1frack08-a
Many environmentalist and victims of contaminated drinking water gathered at the rally in Center City, pictured above, to cause awareness and try to rally to stop fracking. Many natural gas companies tried to explain why fracking is beneficial but these protesters rallied on. Currently the people who rallied didn't get much justice, but they plan to rally all over Pennsylvania to get everyone to say Frack No!

  • What did you like about this project? What was most challenging?
I liked that you had control over the outcome of the change that happened in America.
  • Describe the most interesting fact or event that you investigated.
It was interesting reviewing some Abraham Lincoln quotes about abolishing slavery.
  • How do the actions of individuals impact the historical record?
Choices that the president (President Lincoln) made affected America as a whole. And many slave owners disobeyed the law once it was a law to abolish slavery.
  • How do systemic changes impact the historical record?
Things in history occurred at a certain point in history for a reason.
  • How influential can one decision be in the historical landscape?
A leader can influence many brains of the American people and influence decisions that can effect America as a whole.
  • How could this project be improved?
I feel like I could have gone into more detail about the background to the project and the background history.
  • If you had it to do over, what would you change about your process for the project?
If I had more time I would've made a video.

Musical Instrument Blog #1&2

Posted by Alaya White in Physics - Echols on Thursday, May 26, 2011 at 10:32 pm
I have decided to make a water xylophone.
water
water
Link to video example of water Xylophone

A water xylophone is played by a mallet like stick of something hand banging onto the instrument and the vibrations of the parts of the instrument is what makes the sound. With a water xylophone, the water and the glass jars are what vibrates and make the sound. The notes change depending on the different jars with different amounts of water in them. The more the water the more pitch the not has (lower pitch), but when the jar has less to very few water, the sound and pitch is much higher.

The materials used for the xylophone is 5-7 jars filed with water measured in different milliliters of water, food coloring (optional to make it visually appealing), and a mallet/striking instrument to create the sound. The sound of the water xylophone is produced by vibrations of the water and the jar. The mallet contains all of the potential energy before in has any encounter with the jar with water in it. The energy transfers into kinetic energy when the mallet hits the jar. that energy is spread throughout the jar which makes the sound and creates sound waves.

a. What went well?
My group really worked well and was very productive during class time and time when we did research on our google doc at home. We also gathered a lot of information in order to complete the project thoroughly.
b. What did not?
After looking at a project with a perfect score I feel like we didn't do well with the visual aspect. We were going to create a picture timeline put we didn't have time because we spent so much time gathering facts an information to incorporate into our final project.
c. What would you do differently next time?

"Poetry Slam!" : Advertisements that Objectify Women

It Takes One to Know One

Darling,
Throughout your teenage years what have you broken?
A few bones?
Maybe even a few hearts?
NO! That's Not All.
You have cracked your mothers soul like
the spine
of
a
new
book
And you continue to pose for this foolishness as you witness her blood pour
And as the pain in the veins of her eyes remain
Reflect on the messages you send to men
Is this becoming a trend?
What has Gotten into Us Young Women?

Sincerely,
Been There Done That

Continence: Just Do It®

Your continence has constantly verbalized (Just Do It)
But for what? (Just Do It)
For many males to be mesmerized by her thighs
Or possibly what lies in between them (Just Do It)
You see she knows the way it will be portrayed (Jus Do It)
But it doesn't matter because she is still getting payed (Just Do It)
And maybe after this she'll even get laid
But the negative image of her will never fade

But...She is still afraid (Just Do It)
She knows it's wrong
The pitchfork of the devil is dragging her along
It's her choice to move on
And leave all these bad spirits alone

My purpose for all of this is to poetically open your eyes

to realize

that these marketing guys

are not on our side

You see we women are queens

Not only are we queens but we are also

Human Beings

This sexual curse has been rehearsed and rehearsed and it hurts our youth

And our youth is our future

And we shall leave this in the past

Objectification has gone on for far too long

Let us women stand up and fight for our rights

For we are not just a body that pleases the sight

Let us tear down ads where women are posing preposterously

and standing slutty

And reshape the world and re-sculpt the minds of our youth  to once again

cherish the female flesh

and perish the thought of

you

you

and

you,

not all being beautiful. You see these ads are ugly, what I see in me and think of WE

does not equal what these ads portray.

These degrading ads have received debatable responses like

"Oh it's not that bad" or

"Where is your sense of humor?"

Well I say there is a line between humorous and disrespectful.

These ads have crossed the line and have been throughout history for a long time.

How dare you be so mean

and have the audacity to degrade a queen.

Research/Thesis Paper, Process Paper, & Works Cited

  • Why did you choose this topic?
  • Why did you choose this type of presentation format?
  • Where did you run into trouble with the project?
  • What went well with this project?
  • If you had it to do over, what would you change about your decisions or your process?
  • What did you learn?

I choose this topic because I see degrading advertisements on television, on paper, billboards, etc. and take offense to the brutal material coming from the product. I felt that poetry has a way with words that could get inside people and "grind them up" so the feeling that the marketers should've had when they were brainstorming about advertisements and came up with offensive materials such a the ads above. Out of the sample I collected in my research, these are the subdued versions out of all of the example ads I found. The others were entirely too graphic to use for a project for school. I didn't have much trouble with this project . I actually enjoyed it; my heart was in it. The fact that I found so many ads helped with this project. I wish I could've written a poem for each one I found. If I had more time I would do so. I learned how cold hearted some people are with this project and that a "sense of humor" can be rather offensive to a certain group of people.
