Capstone Brendan Barnes

Posted by Brendan Barnes in Capstone · Enzweiler · Wed on Thursday, May 2, 2019 at 10:08 am

For my capstone I chose to host a wiffle ball game, I wanted to focus on collaboration and how teamwork will led to a better performance in the game. To kick off my capstone I began by doing a ton of research on what it means to collaborate and how team work, enhances the teams play versus everyone just doing their own thing. After I got done with the research on that I then had to learn all of the wiffle balls rules and regulations. I learned the history behind wiffle ball and how it came to be. After gathering up all the information I needed I then made a google form, in the google form I simply asked “would you be interested in playing wiffle ball?” I only had two options for the answer and they were yes or no. I didn’t send the form out to every single student, I just sent it to people who I thought would actually want to play the sport. I only needed 11 other players, I wanted to have 6 players to a team. I felt like with more people the game would become more difficult to manage, also with less people there is less chances of conflict. We played the official game at Chew playground which is located 18th and Washington Ave. The game turned really well, every player from both teams were already friends and had already formed bonds with one another. I invited two friends of mine from outside of school to play in the game, and as the game went on they began to fit right in and they became friends with everyone else.

“A Brief History of Wiffle Ball.” Mental Floss, Mental Floss, 29 June 2014, mentalfloss.com/article/24609/it-curves-brief-history-wiffle-ball.

This source addresses the origins about how wiffle ball came to be and why it is played. I chose this because through my capstone I would like to also inform the players about some of the history that comes from wiffle ball. I feel as though if they knew about how the game started it would give them a better grasp of the game, with hopes that it will make them play harder.

“NWLA Tournament.” NWLA Tournament, nwlatournament.com/.

This source is the professional wiffle ball league, this will help me with planning the tournament and creating teams. I will use their league as a reference to structure my tournament. Hopefully this source will prove to be very helpful.

This source talks about some of the physics and math behind wiffle ball, this is a way to make my capstone educative, I can hold a meeting before the game and inform the players

Santora, Marc. What's 50, Curvy And Full of Air?; It's the Wiffle Ball, Still Popular, Holes and All. www.nytimes.com/2003/08/14/nyregion/what-s-50-curvy-and-full-of-air-it-s-the-wiffle-ball-still-popular-holes-and-all.html.

This source talks about how wiffle ball stayed relevant through the years, I feel like this relates to my capstone because if wiffle ball didn’t stay popular I wouldn’t even be able to do this as my capstone. This link also points out a few places that you can get wiffle balls and bats from which I found helpful because I will need to go out and buy at least two bats and maybe a couple balls just in case anything happens.

The Wiffle Ball, Inc. - A Brief History, www.wiffle.com/pages/game_rules.asp?page=game_rules.

This source provides information about the wiffle ball rules and regulations. I chose this because while running a wiffle ball tournament it is essential to know how the game is played. I need to have a grasp of all the rules to ensure that we will have fun and fair play.

“UGA SBDC | The Importance of Collaboration.” University of Georgia Small Business Development Center, The University of Georgia Small Business Development Center, 31 Aug. 2015, www.georgiasbdc.org/terry-the-importance-of-collaboration/.

This source points out the importance of collaboration, this is the centerpiece of my capstone. That is one of the reasons why I chose this source, I need to have a deep understanding about the whole concept of collaboration before I do a whole capstone with it at the core. After I read this article I can definitely say that I have a way better understanding of what collaboration should look like and what it should be

Wehbe, Shada. “5 Important Reasons Why Teamwork Matters.” The Online Learning Platform, 17 Apr. 2018, www.potential.com/articles/5-important-reasons-why-teamwork-matters/.

This source gives us information about why teamwork is so important. Wiffle ball is a team sport in which each team will have to work together in order to succeed. Through my capstone I would like make the players understand the importance of teamwork and collaboration and how it will affect the performance of the teams. I want them to understand that teamwork could be the difference between winning and losing.

“What Collaboration Really Means.” ThoughtFarmer, 14 Jan. 2019, www.thoughtfarmer.com/blog/what-collaboration-really-means/.

This is another source that details the importance of collaboration it also gives a few different definitions for the term “collaboration.” I chose this source to even further  my knowledge and understanding of collaboration. I will have to know as much information about it, to prove that collaboration is one of SLA’s most important core values. It also highlights different ways people can collab with one another.

“Which of Your Friends Needs to Learn This Term?” BusinessDictionary.com, www.businessdictionary.com/definition/collaboration.html.

This source gives different definitions for the word collaboration, while watching and reviewing the wiffle ball games it would be very important for me to be able to use different angles to analyze and view the collaboration of the teams. This will eventually make my capstone even stronger, because this can let me explain our core value in different ways.

Payne, Marissa. “Adult Wiffle Ball Is a Thing, and This Play Is Perhaps the Greatest Wiffle Ball Play Ever.” The Washington Post, WP Company, 14 Aug. 2015, www.washingtonpost.com/news/early-lead/wp/2015/08/14/adult-wiffle-ball-is-a-thing-and-this-play-is-perhaps-the-greatest-wiffle-ball-play-ever/?utm_term=.7bbf1c11e27c.

This source is about the best adult wiffle ball game play ever. This is important to my capstone because this shows that people are still interested in wiffleball. So that means I have an audience for my capstone. So all the hard work that I will put on the capstone will have value to those who have love for wiffle ball.

Memory Reconstuction

Posted by Brendan Barnes in College English · Pahomov/Rhymer · C Band on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at 1:40 pm

The bell rings, a mob of kids filled the hallways every one of them stopping at their lockers. “Aye Johnny what are you about to do?” an unfamiliar voice said in the distance. I look began looking around but I can’t determine where it came from so I just put on my jacket and walked out the door. I was walking over to the bus stop to head home. Once I got home no one was there, I tried calling my mom, and dad but no answer each and every time. This left me confused they normally are always here before I get out of school. Then my grandma pulls up and tells me to pack my things and that I had to come with her. She says “Your mother and father, left all of us.”

I was confused by this I replied, immediately thinking the absolute worst,

   “What do you mean?!!”

“ I mean that they probably are not coming back”

    “ Where are they?”

“None of us know. They just left us a messages saying that you would be left in the house. Alone.”

It couldn’t be true. Why would they leave me behind like that? Do they just not care about me? Why!!?

The sound of the water running while I look at myself in the steamy foggy mirror. “I hate going back to that time.”, I said to myself. My phone begins to ring, “Hello, this is Jonny, CEO of Z-Star, How can I help?”

“ Boss, we have another orphan.”

“Ok, make sure you take care of them”

I love that I’m able to make sure no one will ever feel the same pain that I did, I will make sure to give them the love and care they deserve. When my parents abandoned me, and I was forced to live with my grandma, it caused me great pain. I wanted to give up on life at that time but instead of ending it all, I managed to make it my motivation to do better.

Big Sean – One Man Can Change the World Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

I was inspired by Margaret Atwood’s writing style and how she really gave her characters their own personalities and thing like that. I chose to try that approach while writing this, by making his childhood something that would trigger your emotions and cause you to feel bad for him. Then I made it so that he helped the others who had the same kind of issues that he was suffering from.

Q4 Art Reflection

Posted by Brendan Barnes in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, June 1, 2018 at 9:46 am
During the fourth quarter of art we learned about all the elements of "art." Line, shape, value, form, texture, and color, we had seven different assignments each of which to highlight one of the elements. Me personally I never really sat down and just admired art but once I learned about all the different elements I now find myself just noticing when the elements come into play in the real world. For each of my assignments I just searched through google and found an image that reminded me of myself and the tried to replicate it. I really enjoyed this quarter it showed me the finer things of art like how the smallest detail would make the biggest change.

Week 10 Art Project -Brendan Barnes

Posted by Brendan Barnes in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, January 26, 2018 at 3:49 pm

For week one we did blind contour  drawings and it was kind of hard for me because I was so used to looking at the paper when I was drawing. Then I didn’t really understand that it was supposed to look messed up so I was throwing a lot of the really bad ones in the trash and starting over. For week three we had to color in our contour drawings and I forgot to submit my work so I was walking around with a zero for it but once I realized it I quickly submitted it.

On week 4 I had to paint, I chose to do perry the platypus  because he is my favorite character from a tv show that I watched when I was a kid, I had a lot of fun working on it because I had to mix the colors together to create the colors that I really wanted. Week 5 and 6 was my worst week this quarter because I tried to recreate the American flag but then I left my flag in my locker and since we had a lot of snow days I was not able to really work on it so I didn’t get a good grade on it, but I choose to do the American flag because it is a symbol itself but within it there are multiple symbols, I just find that to be really cool.

The assignment for week 7 and 8 turned out to be the best artwork I’ve done probably in my whole life, I chose to do Chief Keef who is one of my favorite rappers that are from Chicago. I feel like I did it perfectly. I got points off because for some reason it was turned sideways on the pdf but not on the normal google doc. Week 9 we had to edit a photo and add depth of field to it. To me it was a good way to end off the marking period. I chose to focus on a picture that said “Neither God” and it didn’t take my long to do that but the picture had to be 2 hours of work so I spent the rest of the time add special effects to it.

I would also like people to know that I don’t consider myself to be an artist but I honestly do feel way more confident about drawing since I joined Ms.Hull’s art class, I make sure just to try and have fun with it. For every single one of my pieces of art I never once said I couldn’t do it and I just tried my best.

MP1 Art Work

Posted by Brendan Barnes in Advanced Art · Hull · y1 Band on Friday, November 10, 2017 at 12:14 pm

The first assignment we did this quarter was ceiling tiles. I chose to use Kyrie Irving’s logo as my ceiling tile because he is one of my favorite basketball players, he is arguably the best point guard in the whole NBA. I chose the color scheme of green and white because he was recently traded to the Boston Celtics. I have always been curious about splatter paint and how to properly do it. Ms. Hull always pushes us to do more or to at least try to make the assignment, so I decided why not just try splatter paint.  I was very proud of my end result because it came out exactly how I pictured it in my head.

My second assignment was a fall wall hang. Since most people in the class were choosing to do things that were thanksgiving themed, I chose to go with the Halloween theme. I began brainstorming about what I should do. Then I decided to draw a bat because that relates to Halloween and they are one of my favorite animals. So I drew a bat but it was clearly not enough. So I drew a giant red moon because I felt like that would add a scary aspect to it. The moon took me forever to fully color and I didn’t get the grade that I wanted on this assignment. It kind of discouraged me and I felt like I got that grade because I just wasn’t as talented as other kids when it came down to arts and crafts.

The third assignment was a self portrait and I had a really bad start to this assignment because I could not even draw my head the way I truly wanted to. So I ended up tracing the oval for my head and then free handed everything else. We had more time on this project than any other assignment and I still had to work on it outside of the class, I had to come in during my lunch and take it home. Just to make sure it was done on time. I was very surprised with the final product because I did not know I was capable of doing that kind of work. I was very happy with myself portrait.

Let Millennials Drink!!!

Posted by Brendan Barnes in English 3 · Pahomov · B Band on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 9:38 pm

REMINDERS FOR THE FIRST 2FER:

  • You need at least TWO outside sources referenced in the paper, and also in the “Works Cited” section at the bottom of your doc, using correct MLA citation format.

  • You do NOT need the first or second person -- I, me, my, we, us, our, you, yours, etc.

If your paper has either of these problems, it automatically loses 10% on the final grade. They are easy to avoid, just check before you submit.

Your Draft Here:

In some parts of the United States of America (U.S)  the legal minimum drinking age is twenty-one years old. By contrast, China has no legal drinking age and Cuba has it as low as the age of sixteen. With other countries legal drinking age being a low age or not being existent at all shows huge trust in their citizens and shows that they believe their citizens are responsible.  The 21-and-over drinking age in the United States reflects the fact that adults do not trust young people in the united states.

The U.S needs to show trust in it’s millennials and that trust will also come with confidence and responsibility and this is what the millennials need since in their everyday life they are being looked down upon by the adults.  According to Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). “Finally, in 1984, the federal government ordered all 50 states to raise their legal drinking age to 21 years old or suffer a 10 percent cut in their annual federal highway dollars.” This all started thirty-three years ago and now it is a whole new generation aka the millennials that are around today. U.S are punishing the new generation because of the mistakes and irresponsibility of the generation before them. The millennials deserve to have the same chances of those who came before them.

The U.S changing the legal drinking age to 18 isn’t  that much to ask for considering  that other countries have their drinking age as low as the age of 16. A study done by the World Health Organization found that “In many European countries where the drinking age is 18 or younger, 15 and 16 year-old teens have more drinking occasions per month, but fewer occasions of dangerous intoxication than their American counterparts.” The results of this study came out this way because European countries trust their citizens with alcohol at a younger age so they basically grow with the ability to drink. While the U.S on the other hand have many different penalties when It comes down to minors possessing alcohol, this leads to people tending to go out and get completely wasted on their twenty-first birthday in celebration for being legally able to drink. Since they are getting completely wasted the chance of something dangerous or fatal happening exponentially increases.

If the adults stopped to think about it, they will realize that the legal drinking age is not just about safety but it is also about building trust in society. If the legal drinking age is indeed changed to eighteen the trust that would be brought along would be very strong and it would really increase the bond between the millennials and the adults. This is why the U.S needs to change their minimum legal drinking age to eighteen throughout the U.S.

We The Youth

"We The Youth" fue hecha por Keith Haring.

No soy solo.

Soy yo - fuerte e inteligente

El azul del cielo Americano

Saboreo la tierra de mi trabajo

La piel de mi mamá

Yo subo la esperanza de otros

Bailo con edificios

Hablo inglés con  mi familia

Escapo del odio

Necesito dinero para mi familia

Somos productos de Filadelfia

Somos americanos

Hablamos inglés

La lengua de americanos

No somos Mexicanos.

No somos Españoles

Mi padre y yo pasamos tiempo juntos y jugamos videojuegos

Yo vivo mi  vida felizmente y loco.

Growing Up Online Reflection

Growing Up Online
What was this show about?
This show was about how the internet effects kids and it showed pros and cons to the internet

What is the most memorable thing to you about this show?
The most memorable thing is when the people were addicted to video games and they starved themselves because they did not take a break.

Why/Why not -  is it important to watch shows like these?
It is important to watch shows like this because they show you the dangers of the internet.

How will you keep your future family safe online?
I will have my kids passwords and user-names to their accounts

Why is it important to talk with your family about internet safety
I don't think it is important to talk to your family about safety but you should tell them if you find something alarming.

What advice would you give to parents that don't know how to keep their children safe online?
I would tell them to watch their kid and make sure they stay on top of things.

Media Fluency (1)
For my slide I said football is life because I wanted to keep it simple and the reason why  I chose to do it about football because I love football I can play it all day long and watch it all night long. I said it was the key to happiness because football bring people joy and brings families closer.

Today in class we watched a video about a boy named Jack that was getting bullied in school and if we click the eye emoji we can make everything better. This made me realize that bullying really effects people and make them feel worthless.  When I am online, I am like a ghost I don't post anything I get on and read what other people post and most of the time I don't even get online. I think other people don't think of my as anything online because I don't really be online. I want to expose the internet trolls because they hurt people feelings and then laugh about it. The negative results of anonymity is all the trolls and bullying of people. The positive result is that it is an easy way of communicating with your friends.
