David Leonard Capstone

Posted by David Leonard in Capstone - Pahomov - Wed on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 3:14 pm
For my capstone I decided on making a 2D platforming game. The reason I chose to do this is I like to play a lot of video games so I decided to try and make one. I first looked for free tools for making a game for beginners where I found a web-based one called sploder which is what I decided on using. I then made levels for my game based on the gaming videos I watch by using ideas from the games being played and trying to input them into my game. I also had someone test out some of the game to get feedback on it and then made edits to the levels based on it. What I learned from this is if you plan making a complex game then you should not use any of the free tools since you are extremely limited in what you can do.

Web. 03 Feb. 2016. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4w2QRLenOg>. This video shows gameplay of a 2D game where the objective is to run an obstacle course and to eliminate the other players by making them fall behind and go off the screen using different types of tools and weapons. I chose this because one of the tools you have is a grappling hook to traverse different areas so I decided to have something similar in my game. I think this source is reliable since it shows enough of the gameplay to get a good understanding of what you need to do and how it works.

This video shows gameplay of a classic 2D platformer shooter where you have to defeat enemies and get through the level to get to the boss and defeat him. I chose this because there is a power up in the game where you give the character a gun so I am going to make a level similar to this.

McCarthy Unabridged: The Road Page 286

Posted by David Leonard in Being Human - Giknis - B on Friday, January 29, 2016 at 6:23 am

Creative:

The passage below is what I think was cut from Cormac McCarthy’s The Road while he was writing the book.

The group passed through abandoned cities and towns and looked for things to eat and drink. Everyday the boy would talk to his papa so he didn’t forget about him. He would tell him about the things he was experiencing and the things he was learning. He would tell him about the different animals that he learned. He would tell him that he is still carrying the fire and that they would find the good guys.

After traveling for a while the group reached a submontane. They decided to climb for a while before making camp. The mountain was burned like a fire had happened. The man looked around to find anything they could use. There used to be many animals that would live in these mountains he said. The little girl was startled by something in a dried up stream.

Whats over there?

Its the remains of a deer.

Why is it there?

It must have tried to get away from the fire but got trapped.

The man then went over and searched to see if there was anything there. When he searched it he found that it had rotted down to the bone. He then turned and went back and they continued climbing the mountain.

Rationale:

The piece I have written will be inserted on page 286 right before the part with the trout. I chose this place because it is supposed to lead up to the part with the trout at the end which in the book just happened right after he joined the man with the shotgun. The piece is supposed to show a little of the boy traveling with the man and his family and how he is still talking to his papa. The boy in my piece however doesn’t have much of a conversation with the others that much. However I did have it so that that boy still had his curiosity. I made it like how it was in the beginning of the book where he didn’t talk much unless he was curious about something. The motif was animals since the man was remembering the animals that used to live up in the mountains. Also when the little girl finds the skeleton of a deer that had long been dead and decayed into nothing but bones. The theme I chose was memories. While they are climbing up the mountain I had it so that the part with the trout at the end of the book would be the man remembering what was in the dried up stream. I wanted to keep with the question about what happened to the world. In this book we were guessing what had happened that caused all of this so I wrote this in a sense that you would still be wondering what exactly caused all of this to happen.

Article 1: Martin Van Buren

Martin Van Buren is the current President of the U.S. and has been for 2 years which is half of his term. I will tell you some things that you might not know about him. He was born on December 5, 1782 in Kinderhook, New york. His father was Abraham Van Buren who was a farmer that ran a tavern and inn who owned 6 slaves and his mother was Maria Hoes Van Alen Van Buren. He was also vice-president for Andrew Jackson and was a U.S. senator.

When he ran for President he said he would leave slavery alone in the U.S. where it already existed. He also said that he opposed abolitionists which helped him gain southern support. He was going to follow in the footsteps of Andrew Jackson who nominated him for presidency. He continued some of the things Jackson started like the issue withe the Natives. However he then made a bold step when he reversed his policies to make peace at home.

Article 2: Views on Andrew Jackson

This cartoon is of Andrew Jackson the "Man of the People". Many thought of him as a good man who fought for the people’s rights. However he known to be rather violent as he had a quick temper. He often got into bar brawls, duels, and fought basically anybody who opposed him. Even when he became president he used violence as a solution to many problems mainly anything to do with the Indians. He fought wars with them and took away their land either by buying it or forcing them to move which one such thing became known as the trail of tears.

So I’d say this cartoon is an accurate depiction of Jackson. It shows him with a gun with him saying anybody else want to discuss politics and a dead guy behind him. That basically describes his life as he caused many Natives to die when he fought with them. And when his Presidency ended he said that he regretted being unable to shoot Henry Clay who was a senator. He then chose Martin Van Buren his vice president as the candidate for the next election so that his policies would be continued.

Book Review

Posted by David Leonard in English 3 - Rami - D on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 6:26 am

The book I read was called The Stars, Like Dust by Isaac Asimov. It’s about a man named Biron Farrill who is the son of the Rancher of Widemos. When his father is killed the ones who killed him come after Biron who is attending a University on Earth. After escaping near death he travels to find out why his father was killed and what does it have to do with him.

The author Isaac Asimov was born in the Soviet Union. When his parents were immigrating to the U.S he was stowed away in their baggage at the age of 3 and became an American citizen at 8. When he was 9 he discovered his first science fiction magazine and started to write stories at 11 then submitted one at the age of 18. Although the book was rejected four months later he sold his first story. When he was 21 he wrote a short story called Nightfall and then started to write others shortly after. He now has published over 260 books doesn’t seem to be slowing up.

The book is structured in chronological order except maybe on a few occassions. At many parts of the book they use a lot of scientific terms to explain how things work and what is going on. However this can cause the book to be confusing to people at first but it eventually explains enough for them to understand. I think a major Idea in the book is that deep space travel is possible and there might be other habitable planets but that it is very complicated to do.

The book exceeded my expectations with the explanation of their technology. I was expecting it to describe how they are able to travel throughout space but I wasn’t expecting them to explain at all how it works or how they are able to find habitable planets. What fell short was that fact that I was expecting more action in the book. Instead most of the book was on a spaceship either going from place to place or it just staying still in the middle of space. And when the characters were on a planet they were there for like at most fifty pages and then back to the ship.

I would recommend this book to people are interested in science fiction and are interested in books that take place in space. This book is also kind of like a mystery because you don’t exactly know what is going to happen next and there is a real plot twist near the end of the book. However if you are interested in books that are science fiction and have a lot of action in them you might not like this book since it is lacking action, but has a lot of suspense. I thought the book was okay but that’s just me.

I don’t like or hate Philadelphia because it doesn’t really peak my interest to think about it. Also I don’t really know a lot about my neighborhood due to the fact that I don’t really pay attention to what goes on in it. However I do notice some people move out and after a month a person moves in. During holidays a lot of people have parties which can be annoying. The only major problem is the fact that people are always getting parking tickets for parking in front of people’s houses and in front of their garages. And in some cases people end up getting towed.

Belief systems should not influence basic human rights. In world history this year I learned that people care more about what they believe in or want more than they care about others lives. In the past they killed others for land and the ones they didn't kill they enslaved for free labor. They will hire workers and make them work for long ours for only a few cents a day. They will make children travel miles on foot to go work at a factory.

One example of this is when we did the Cortes Trial. We were trying to find out who was the most guilty for the slaughter of the Aztecs. It was between The King, Cortes, The Aztecs, Cortes's men, or the System of Empire. There were many charges against them all and here are a few. The King: He sent Cortes to Mexico to colonize it. Cortes: He was the commander of the troops that killed the Aztecs. The Aztecs: They allowed Cortes in their City and did nothing about his conquest. Cortes's Men: They were the ones who carried out the orders from Cortes. The System of Empire: This caused the King to send Cortes because the system requires people to have money to survive. Click here for other charges.

Another example would be when we did the Sweatshop Trial. This trial was about who is to blame for businesses having sweatshops in other countries. This is because many people work in sweatshops for long hours minimal pay to produce many things. These things are then shipped to other countries to be sold at high prices to people so that these businesses can make a lot of money. Also the factories that the people work at are falling apart and the owners aren't even trying to repair them or even care about the workers. The accused are The System of Profit, U.S. Consumers, Poor Country Workers, Poor Country Ruling Elite, and Multinational Corporations.

Also we went over colonization of different countries and did a project on it. During the Unit we read a book called Things Fall Apart. It was about a tribe in Nigeria that lived by their gods. Then the people came and started to spread their religion and as time passed more and more of the people converted to it. For the project we had to show artifacts from colonialism and explain how they were involved. It also had to be like an actual exhibit so there was something that happened when they walked in and left.

Later on we did a Journal by comparing two maps and saying what we noticed. The two maps were of Africa in different time periods. One was from 1876 where the majority of Africa was still indigenous. Then there is the one from 1914 where the countries are colonized and trying to gain independence.

In class we learned about different rev. We learned about the a little about the revolution in Egypt. How Egypt camped out in a square until their president left. Then they did it again when the military took over. Afterwards the military sent in troops and tanks to remove the people from the area.

We also learned about the Rev. in Ukraine. In Ukraine the President was a very greedy man. He promised to integrate Ukraine with the European Union and he didn’t. He also had a custom made toilet that was made of gold. Then when he left there was a warrant for his arrest.

Halo: Ghosts of Onyx book review

Posted by David Leonard in English 1 - Dunn on Friday, June 7, 2013 at 2:10 pm

Independent Reading Book

David Leonard

The book I read was called Halo: Ghosts of Onyx by Eric Nylund. This book is the fourth book in the halo book series. It is continueing the New York Times bestselling series based on the Xbox game. This book was published in 2006.

A man named Kurt who is kidnapped while on a mission to train the next gen. of super soldiers known as Spartan III’s to fight a war. These super soldiers are made of kids who were orphaned by war. They are sent on suicidal missions in which most did not make it. But then the planet Onyx which they train on activates ancient technology they have to fight for their lives and try to recover some of this tech to put an end to the war.

The conflict in this book is the Human race is at war with an advanced alien race called the Covenant which are made up of different alien species. The Covenant win the majority of the battles but the humans are able to win small battles but with heavy casualties. Then something in the planet Onyx turns on and creates these AI units called sentinels. These sentinels are very dangerous and put both the humans and Covenant in danger.

The main characters are a man named Kurt, Dr. Catherine Halsey, Chief Menendez and the Spartan III’s. Kurt is a Spartan II and in charge of of training the Spartan III’s. Dr. Halsey is trying to recover the ancient technology on Onyx and use it to end the Human-Covenant War. Chief Menendez is Kurts right hand man in training the Spartan III’s and former trainer of the Spartan II’s. The Spartan III’s are an army of Spartans that are sent on nearly impossible missions where most don’t survive.

I cannot relate to any of the characters in the book. I never felt some of the same things that the characters felt. I could not relate to any of the characters because I never experienced anything like the characters. I also never been put in a near suicidal situations.

I think this book is O.K. A strength of this book is it explains what is going on and what some things are for people who don’t understand what is going on. A weakness is that the book sometimes changes the setting in the middle of a chapter. If I could change something in the book I wouldn’t change anything since it is based off one of my favorite video games. I would recommend this book to other people because it is very descriptive and is at a high school reading level.

YATW Blog 3

Posted by David Leonard in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, May 15, 2013 at 10:26 am
I did a power point presentation on my YATW issue and presented to my advisory. My presentation described what is affected by Global Warming and how it is caused. I worked on one slide each day for seven days. I believe that my presentation went well with explaining the topic. I didn't encounter any problems except on how many slides I should have and just had seven slides. This project hasn't really impacted me at all. I'm not sure how it has impacted the community around me. I see myself as someone who doesn't really participate in the community that much.

The Rise & Fall of Macbeth

Posted by David Leonard in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 9:56 am
My project is about the rise & fall of Macbeth. This is a creative extension of the Macbeth quote analysis that shows how Macbeth betrayed his friends and country.
My process in crafting the creative portion was thinking of the type of creative portion I should do, finding the pictures for the short story, and finding the right dialogue to use. The difficulties I had were finding the pictures and thinking of the creative portion. I overcame them by looking up specific events from Macbeth and narrowing down types of creative portions I could do. I am most proud of how the pictures match the event well because I had a hard time finding a few of them. If I was given the chance I would add a little more dialogue before and after the quote.
What I learned from the presentations was that a lot of people preferred to do Macbeth more than Lady Macbeth. As a result from doing this project I learned that I prefer the non-digital ones more than the videos.

Script:
My slide is about my favorite things to do. My influence for the slide was I had to make one slide about me so I chose some of my favorite things to do. I chose the pictures that represent some of my favorite things to do.
What I learned:
I changed my slide because it had too many words and the pictures were not the same size. I learned that you shouldn't have a lot of pictures or words when presenting. And don't have water marks on your pictures.

Global Warming Blog Post 2

Posted by David Leonard on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 7:52 am
Global warming is a problem. It is putting some animal species in danger. The animals most affected are the ones living in the arctic. It is also making the Earth warmer. The temperature of Earth has risen 1.4 degrees fahrenheit over the past century.
Some animals that are affected are the arctic fox. The arctic fox is one of nine animals threatened by global warming. The polar bear is endangered because of global warming. The polar bear lives in the arctic and with the ice melting there won't be any left.
The ones responsible are humans. Over the past century humans have released large amounts of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The main source is burning fossil fuels for energy. The greenhouse gases trap the energy in the atmosphere which make it warmer.
Co2 remains in the atmosphere for nearly a century. That means Earth will keep getting warmer for the upcoming decades. The warmer it gets, the greater the risk that Earth's climate will severely change.
Among the new research I did was a survey I created which revealed the following answers to this question:

Why is global warming a bad thing?
-One responder said that it was mainly because that it will mess up the ecosystem, cause agriculture to slow down. Also, mess with the world currents of the ocean making it colder in Europe, and it will cause an increase in violent while another person said it is altering the environment completely and changing the ecosystem.

Book Review on Halo: The Fall of Reach

Posted by David Leonard on Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 7:30 am

Independent Reading Book

David Leonard

The book I read was called Halo: The Fall of Reach by Eric S. Nylund. This book based off of the award winning Xbox game Halo: Combat Evolved. The book was published in 2001. The book was not on the NYT bestsellers and is not a movie in the making.

The book is about a lady named Dr. Catherine Halsey who kidnaps 75 kids from human controlled planets (also called UNSC) and experiments on them to create an army of super soldiers to end a rebellion within the human colonies. Shortly after the human race goes to war against an alien race called the Covenant and the super soldiers (also called Spartans) are the only hope for Humanity’s survival. Within a decade Humanity lost most of the outer colonies. Then the Covenant starts to take the inner colonies and there most important before Earth is called the Planet Reach.

The main characters are Dr. Catherine Halsey, John- 117, and Capt. Jacob Keyes. Capt. Keyes is one of the UNSC’s best and commands a fleet to defend UNSC planets. John- 117 is the leader of the Spartans and one of the last surviving ones. Dr. Halsey is the UNSC’s best scientist and creator of the Spartans. My favorite character is John- 117 because he is in the video game as well.

I cannot relate to any of the characters. I never felt some of the same things that the characters felt. I could not relate to any of the characters because I never experienced anything like the characters. I also never been experimented on by people or anything like it.

I somewhat liked this book since it was based off one of my favorite video games. One of the strengths was the book gave the time and date of each chapter so the reader knows how much time has passed in the book. One of the weaknesses was the book didn’t explain much of the battles or some characters in the book. If I could change something in the book it would be for it to explain more of the battles and characters in the book.

I would recommend this book to other people because it is descriptive with the main points. The book also doesn’t get off topic with any of the main characters. It does describe most of the conflict. Finally, if you like the video game the book helps explain the history.

Climate Change and Global Warming

Posted by David Leonard in English 1 - Dunn on Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 12:42 pm
With the climate changing global warming is becoming a problem. Global warming is making the ice in the north pole retreat and is causing sea levels to rise. With higher sea levels there will be more floods. If all the ice melts most of the U.S. will be under water. All of the east, west, and south coasts of the U.S. will be completely under water. Most of the Islands will be under water along with most of Europe and Asia. Australia would probably be completely under water since it doesn't have high elevation except for the mountains.
The cause of Global warming is pollution. Pollution is created in many ways. One way is car exhaust being released into the atmosphere. It weakens the ozone layer allowing more UV rays to get through causing more heat. The extra heat is causing the polar ice caps to melt.
