Differentiating True and False Love

Posted by Fariha Sultana in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Wednesday, April 27, 2016 at 8:07 am

In the "The Taming of the Shrew" by William Shakespeare, the characters Petruchio and Katherine were a couple who faced lots of problems before they fell in love. In the movie "A Walk To Remember”, Landon and Jamie were a couple and in love too, even though Jamie had cancer and would soon die. Landon sacrificed his carefree life to be with her. In both the play and the movie, there was a wedding, but Landon and Jamie were in love when they were  got married.Compared to  Petruchio and Katherine, weren't in love when got  married. Petruchio  forced her to get married. In the end Katherine falls in love with Petruchio and made sacrifices, just as Landon did, but Petruchio’s disregard for her feelings means their love is not genuine. These texts reflect that if one person truly loves another person, then he or she will overcome challenges and make sacrifices to make the other happy.

“No shame but mine. I must, forsooth, be forced To give my hand, opposed against my heart”

(Act iii, Scene i, 8-9)

In this scene Katherine says she doesn’t want to marry Petruchio. Since she does not love him. Petruchio has to use force to make Katherine marry him. That Katherine could not be convinced to marry a man she does not love, this shows that societies view on emale ideas on courtship and/or dating. In the beginning of the play Katherine said it will be shame for her to be with someone who she does not love but by the end of the play, she gives up on this notion. Katherine initially believes that her hand in marriage should belong to someone to whom she can also give her heart. Her idea of courtship is that it should be mutual consent. However, by the end of the story, she accepts that in her situation, Petruchio’s desire to be with her gives her no choice in the matter. Since Katherine’s ideas on courtship and dating have not been met, she and Petruchio cannot share true love.

In the movie “A Walk To Remember”, the characters Landon asking for help from Jamie and when she made a request to him.

Screenshot 2016-04-22 at 6.16.54 PM.pngScreenshot 2016-04-22 at 6.15.14 PM.png

Jamie sacrifices her love for Landon because she knows she can not be with him for very long. She does not hide the fact that she is dying from Landon which shows her belief that it is important to be honest in relationships. Even though it is difficult for her to do this, Jamie requests of Landon, “You have to promise you won’t fall in love with me.” By asking him to promise not to fall in love with her is her way of being honest. Because Jamie believes that relationships require honesty and she takes the steps to be honest with Landon about her situation, the love that eventually blossoms between them is real. If she had lied to him and he had fallen in love with her, it would not be true love because what he knows about her is not completely true.

“And threw the sops all in the sexton’s face, Having no other reason

But that his beard grew thin and hungerly, and seemed to ask him sops as he was drinking. This done, he took the bride about the neck, and kissed her lips such a clamorous smack, that at the parting all the church did echo”.

(Act iii, Sc ii, 175-81)

In this quote, the wedding for Katherine and Petruchio is depicted. At the time of the wedding, Katherine was not in love with Petruchio but he was forcing Katherine to get married. The fact that Petruchio thinks it is acceptable to force Katherine into marriage demonstrates Male ideas in courtship/dating.  The reason that there is this male idea in courtship/dating is that he is getting a sizable dowry through Katherine. His expectations are for Katherine to marry him for his economic benefits and for her to be loyal to him even though he is not treating her with respect. His idea was that it is okay to marry a girl even if she is not happy with the relationship. Katherine sacrifices her independence by marrying Petruchio even though she does not love him. In the end, Katherine becomes a submissive wife because of Petruchio’s force. If Petruchio’s love for Katherine was real, he would not have forced her to make a decision she did not want to make. When one is truly in love with another, one will do whatever it takes to make the other happy, even if one will not be happy with the outcome. Since Petruchio did not take Katherine’s happiness into consideration, his “love” for her is not genuine.

In the movie “A Walk To Remember”, the characters Jamie Sullivan and Landon Carter are in relationship and they get married.

Screenshot 2016-04-19 at 4.05.32 PM.pngScreenshot 2016-04-19 at 4.04.25 PM.png

In this scene, it is Jamie Sullivan’s and Landon Carter’s wedding. In their relationship, there was perfectly sincere love. When Landon learned that Jaime had a very late stage of cancer, he continued to love her. During the wedding, Jamie and Landon say their vows with complete honesty. Landson says, “I do solemnly swear to take Jamie Sullivan, as my lawfully wedded wife, to honor and cherish her all the days of my life”. Even though Landon knows that Jaime will not be able to stay with him forever, he makes a sacrifice by marrying her. Since he truly loves her, he has made a sacrifice to “honor and cherish” her even though it will likely hurt him when she passes away. Unlike Petruchio, Landon made a sacrifice for Jamie to be happy and to be with her until her last breath. Unlike Petruchio, Landon didn’t control Jamie and instead accepted the challenge to love her even though it was difficult for him.  The challenge for Landon was to be in love knowing he would later be alone because of Jamie’s eventual death.

In the play “The Taming of the Shrew” by Shakespeare and in the movie “a walk to remember”, each of the characters make important sacrifices and take on challenges in the name of people they love. However, whether or not the love is real and sincere depends on each character’s actions and intentions. Jamie and Landon are honest with each other and sacrifice for each other, they want to make the other happy. Petruchio and Katherine do not sacrifice for each other, only Katherine gives up her independence. Even when her intention is to make him happy by being loyal to him, Petruchio’s intentions are not to take care of Katherine and her happiness. Petruchio marries Katherine despite her protest to gain her dowry. Therefore, the only couple who truly love each other seek to make the other happy without self-interest.

The Loving Liar

Posted by Fariha Sultana in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, January 11, 2016 at 8:57 am

In June, you get a weird  message from someone on facebook, saying “Hello how are you, can I be your friend? You’re really pretty.” He doesn’t stop sending these messages. It’s not hurting you, but it is getting very annoying, so you decide to text him back with a response that is very blunt. After you specifically show him that you aren’t interested in talking, he keeps on sending messages forcing you to respond  back. You want him to stop, but he won’t. Even after numerous attempts to ignore him, he will not leave you alone. After a while you realize that the messages you are sending him are no longer blunt, but instead, they expose parts of your personality.

After messaging him for a while you realize that you know quite a bit about him. For instance, he lives in America but not on the east coast. He is a californian male. He is a different race from you. He has started sending his personal information to you, such as his phone number and address. Imagine that he asked you for this type of personal information, but you are smart enough to not give it to him. You decide to finally grow up and tell him to stop texting you once and for all, but he is just to persistent and has a way of manipulating your mind and next thing you know you are having facebook video conversations with him. He then takes it a step further and says to me that he is dying because of a brain tumor, you of course having a heart continue your nonsense banter of a conversation.

You have a gut feeling that he is lying, but your hearts good nature can’t bring you to stop this conversation. After you have had enough of this banter and wish for it to stop, you ask for proof of his illness. He keeps on delaying the report so you call him a liar, he doesn’t take that to well and keeps on using his charming ways of conversations to draw you out of your denial. Your denial stops for a while, but is reincarnated when you have once again grown tired of this man. You decide to finish the “friendship” but once again he uses his charming wit to make you feel bad for him he says things like “Before I die I want to hear your voice and absorb your words, please don’t say no.” You answer back saying that “You’ll keep on texting him before his death.”

This happend to me. There I was sitting in my room on my bed, and I hear my phone vibrate. I then looked at my screen, and I saw his name. I then facepalmed my pillow. His message read, “I like your profile picture. You have beautiful hands, your eyes are romantic and You have long nice hair”. I responded saying, “thanks but in real life my hand are not that beautiful.” He responded back,”I always stare at your profile picture and I feel like you're staring me too. Every time I look at your eyes it kills me and my heart beats get faster.” Then I reply with “hahahaha my pleasure”. Then I started thinking how he found me on facebook and I message him “how did you ]find”. He then replys me “I was just searching my friends account and you're appeared so I clicked on it. Then I reply saying, “oh okay”. This is how he talk me and every time he message he’d called me “baby”.  After that I asked him “why do you call me baby?”. His reply was “because your my dream girl and I want to call you baby.” When I finished reading what he said I was thinking he was a crazy boy and also thinking not to get too close with him.

Sometimes I felt very special to him because everytime he messaged he would say something sweet to me that made me believe him more. While I still didn’t believe him that much with everything, but I did believe that he was sick because he didn’t message me for two days and I was little worried that something had happened. After two days later he messaged me back and I asked him “Are you okay?” he then replies saying “you seem to have a place in your heart for me” then I said “what do you mean? he responded “I mean that you were worried about me because I didn’t message you the last two days I was sick because I was in the hospital. Then I said “are you okay now” he says “ yeah I am okay and how are you doing beautiful” and then I said “I’m okay but I not beautiful because you never saw me in real life and what you saw on my pictures made things better than real”. Then he said “don’t ever say this again.. do you know that I downloaded your profile picture to my phone and set it as my wallpaper on my phone, so don’t ever tell me back that you are ugly and don’t ask me why do I have on my phone and it's for me not for you.” The time then was passing and we had conversation like this every day, for at least for 20 minutes. My profile picture was the only picture I had on my facebook after I heard this from him and I then deleted my profile picture from facebook.

Talking to him like this every day two months pass like the wind. After talking to him two for months, then was the time to not believe him anymore. On one Tuesday he told me he had doctor appointment for cat scan. After he finished with the cat scan I asked him when he getting his report. He told in two days. Two days later I asked how was the report his answer was my sister suppose to pick up the report but she couldn’t she was busy and she will pick it up tomorrow. Next day I asked him again and he then told me “in my report it wrote grade IV tumor and that it grew to my heart because I am in love with you, which is the highest stage for cancer in my body”. Then I said really? Then he says no Sorry I am really really sorry for lying to you this whole time but I actually don’t have any cancer and I just wanted some away talk to you. Instead of replying to him I just blocked him and we never talk again.  After all of this I just realize how much a person can lie about their self just to make someone fall in love with them. This then made me not to fully trust someone quickly for anything anymore.

Kindred Essay

Posted by Fariha Sultana in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 8:44 am

In the time period of American slavery, white slave masters did whatever they wanted to their African American slaves. The master’s feelings about their black slaves was complicated. The masters also could be kind and generous to their slaves and treat them like equal humans. Back then, black and white couldn’t be friends or lovers. In Kindred the main character, Dana, does not call her master, Rufus, master. Rufus also treats her differently than other black slave women around him. But the white men and black women couldn't make their relationship, because of the time period they were in. The author helps reader to understand the emotions by portraying love being love, no matter what difference is amongst the two in the relationship through expressing thoughts and events.

Rufus is the master of Alice whom he tries to control by making Alice love him, but he know that she never will. Rufus said,“I know you, Dana. You want Kevin the way I want Alice. And you had more luck than I did because no matter what happens now, for a while he wanted you too. Maybe I can’t ever have that-both wanting, both loving. But i’m not going to give up what I can have.” Page(163). From this quote “but I’m not going to give up what I can have”, is Rufus talking about Alice and how he has her in his heart, and is not letting her out of his sight because of the kind of love he has for her. He tries to rape her, sells her husband, and takes her son away from her, just to have full control over her. The problem that Rufus was not seeing is that, Alice is black and Rufus is white. Therefore they could not have a friendship or relationship because the politics during that time period made it difficult for their relationship to be accepted.

Throughout this book Dana show her intelligence and how strong minded she is to Rufus. She also shows Rufus that they do not have a slave and slave master relationship. The way she does this is by calling him, Rufe instead of master, yelling at Rufus, and making demands. This type of behavior Dana shows, is unusual for a slave to show their master. Since slaves were not suppose to talk back or show any signs of intelligence. So their relationship was shown by a kind that was lovingfull which not allowed at that time, and confused Kevin (a different slave) because Dana said, “he didn’t understand the kind of relationship Rufus and I had-how dependent we were on each other. Rufus understood though.” Page(186) For when she says “he didn’t understand” shows that the “he”, represents the politics which were the people (like Rufus’s father) who didn’t allow black and white to be together, couldn’t “understand” the relationship Dana and Rufus had. As well “how dependent we were on each other” shows the love that was between them two, for they were “dependent” being reliable amongst one another. “Rufus understood though”, proving that he had knowledge of the connection of the type of relationship, because of the name calling and affection shown.

In conclusion, Rufus always loved Dana and tried to force his love upon her by control and not giving up on what he already had. Dana showed him that she was much smarter and strong minded, to overcome Rufus and his attempt to control. Also since she wasn’t fully focused on the love he had for her, but instead focused on the love she had for Kevin. Which proves how there wasn’t a both loving relationship among them because of what each had and believed. So, white men and black women can try friendship, and try to get closer to each other, but they can’t because the time period at the time made it difficult. Dana was a black women, and Rufus was a white man and so he try to make friendship between her, but couldn’t because of the situations of how things were (what he did) and also what each individual believed during that time, because based upon the politics of what they lived through it made them think that black were for black and white were white for white, making their relationship difficult. Also any time there is such a large difference in power, there will always be conflict.

Adapting to new culture

Posted by Fariha Sultana in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Monday, November 24, 2014 at 9:06 am

The class starts and I’m standing here next to the teacher anxiously, waiting to be introduced to the class. I am amazed to see such diversity of students in the classroom, but I see none from where I'm from. Why are they whispering and pointing? As I am standing there feeling more and more like an outcast. ¨I would like to welcome our new student Mona Elsyed who’s come all the way from Egypt....¨ As she’s introducing me, I already feel as if I did not belong. I noticed the pointing fingers turn to my head. One girl had a  confused look on her face as  her eyes were directed towards my Hijab. I felt that she was clueless of what it was and I wasn't able to tell her the way I wanted to because of the language barrier, so I still remained silent. If I knew the correct words I would tell her, that my hijab means much, it is for only those who are family to see what is hidden and where I am from it is written that my hair is a treasure only for my husband to adore. I then was given my seat and I sat down. The teacher then began to teach of things that I did not know or understand and the students began writing while I sat there in worry and confusion. I’m afraid of failing and being made fun of so I just raise my hand ask her what does it mean? she answered me more clear “huh?” but I still couldn’t understand, so she came over to me and showed how to write the assignment. “Ooohh!”, I said loudly and I heard the students around laugh at me but now, I understood. I then began writing my name and I forgot how to write the date in English so I just wrote it in egyptian. I had to write about what I did this past summer,so I wrote at my best ability and I made a paragraph. I then called the teacher over again to check my work and she told me I did a great job and asked if I could read mine out loud to the class. I felt unsure but still said yes. I stood up and the students clapped and as I read slowly, everyone was silent and staring at me so my hands began to shake but I continued reading. I knew I sounded like a broken machine but at least I had the courage to speak and when I was finished I felt better. Everyone then clapped again and I sat down.

My Power In Language

Posted by Fariha Sultana in English 2 - Pahomov - A on Monday, November 10, 2014 at 12:55 pm

Principal: “Good morning! Welcome to the school and the new grade. I hope you like it.”

Students: “Good morning!”

Principal: “How are you today?”

Students: “Good. You?”

Principal: “I am good, thank you. How was your summer?”

Students: “It was nice.”

After that, the principal then proceeded to read out each student’s name and told them which room to go to and which teacher to follow. Then I couldn't understand what she was saying because of the lack of power in my English. A quote that reminds me of that moment is by Rita Mae Brown, “Language exerts hidden power, like the moon on the tides”. The language the principle was speaking I knew had power, which made everyone respond. I also had trouble understanding the accent because from where I came from was Bangladesh and there, English is spoken in a different way. English was used because different languages were used for communication. So I ended up going to the wrong room and making a fool of my self. This made me realize the power of knowing a language.

In Bangladesh things were spoken differently and in America things were too. A Bengali and English accent are different from each other by the sound. For a Bengali accent it sounds like the letters are softer and fast spoken than those in English. For a English accent it sounds more rougher and slow spoken. English is also spoken through vowels but in Bengali there’s no structure of sound, it just flows out. When I first came to America speaking for me was hard and it was really embarrassing because everyone knew and could speak English, but I couldn't. Quoting from The Warrior Woman, to me it seemed like almost “a telephone call made my throat bleed and took up that day’s courage,” and I felt sad sometimes about it.

ESOL teacher: “Can you ask me what time is is?”

Me: “What time is it?”

ESOL teacher: “Okay now can you read me the time?”

Me: “Its uhh four thirty-six?”

ESOL teacher: “No four thirty-nine.”

Me: “ohhh.”

Soon my ESOL teacher helped me understand English better. Quoting from The Warrior Woman, “I cut it so that you would not be tongue tied. Your tongue would be able to move in any language,” she was that. She taught me how to pronounce words and what they meant. She also helped me with my handwriting and spelling, even to this very day I can’t explain myself clear but I know the basic things to help me explain because of her. To me language is power of myself and how I express me. When speaking English I always try my best to communicate what I want to say and how I say it. When I say English language I say with power because I want others to understand me and I then feel better about my language and accent. My accent may not be very fluent like an Americans talking but I know my speech is fine because I’m embracing me and my culture, from Bangladesh.

Language is a common communication amongst others that can identify things. Things like who you are, where you come from and how you describe them and we say those thing by power which is how our words come out. There are definitions for how our words come out. One is called pialet, that mean what you say and how you say it and how a person say is by their accent. Another definition of a way of how language is said is called slang. That mean new fashionable words and phrases people use because its simple and fun to understand. Another thing is that some people may not understand you even though if your speaking the same language because in different area they have different name calling for things. For example, in Philadelphia people say hoagies which to other people are “sub sandwiches”.

Apart from being a means of communication, language is also used to gain political power. Quoting from the essay If Black English Isn't a Language, Then Tell Me, What is? By James Baldwin”- “It goes without saying , then, that language is also a political instrument, means, and proof of power”. To me it means that language isn't just used for communication but also by power. For let us instance consider two people contesting for election, and one of them knows the local language. It will be easier for the person who knows the local language to gain people’s votes and support. It will also be easier for him to help people and retain his position of power. Language also gives you the power to communicate with people who speak the same language, without letting other people know what you talking about.

Over the years, I have realized the significance of a knowing a language is very crucial to our everyday life. Although, at times I feel out of place for not properly understanding everything in the English language. Over the years,I feel like I have gradually built my vocabulary words and now I’m able to function with the help and support of my teachers and peers. By my teachers and peers I have a better understanding of English and now know what to say to others so they know what i’m saying. Therefore, it is important that we understand the language in order to have power.

Negative Space

  • A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the clear blank empty space around a picture.

  • B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?

I found negative space in my cut out by when I used different colour for template to background paper I saw the shape of the cut out. In my stool drawling I did scissors, I found by when I shaded white paper then erase the outline of the scissors. So when I saw the different colours I found negative space.

  • C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

It helps an artist by it him see what he drawled only and it adds a balance to the picture.

  • D. How is negative space useful in creating art?

Negative space is used to just focus what has been drawled.

1) I learned many things throughout this project. The most helpful thing was vanishing point and orthogonal line.

2) Learning about the vanishing point made my drawing better because most of the line I have to draw for vanishing point.

3) If I did this assignment again, I will more focused on my windows.

4) My advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing is to always make more focused on vanishing. The vanishing point is a most important drawing for a one point perspective drawing because all your lines end up going back to vanishing point.

5) The slideshow was the resource because the instructions were very clear  and the pictures were easy to look.
