Hayley Barci Capstone

Posted by Hayley Barci in Capstone · Hernandez/Hull · Wed on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at 5:08 pm
For my capstone I made the decision to do an art portfolio of different special effects makeup looks, at first I thought about writing a book for my capstone, but I changed my capstone into something I was passionate about and wanted to do as my future career. I started out by narrowing down which looks I wanted to accomplish, me and my mentor choose which ones I should do, as well as choosing a reasonable time to get them done by. Throughout doing my capstone I began to get more of an insight of what I wanted to pursue as my career. I learned how to change certain things if I needed to, I learned more about communicating what was necessary to accomplish each look. I began to get some insight of how to learn from my mistakes, and how to improve each look. The looks I chose to do for my capstone are the demon look, meaning of words, mermaid, angel, and a mask.

Annotated Bibliography (MLA Format)

jordanhanz. “DIY Gory Masquerade Mask Halloween Makeup Tutorial.” YouTube, YouTube, 11 Oct. 2016, www.youtube.com/watch?v=MONvglUc3qA

This source is a video, and is actually an inspiration for one of the looks I will be doing for my portfolio. Jordan hanz, a special effects makeup artist, is the person who originally came up with the idea for this look, using a masquerade mask. I looked at some of the techniques she used for painting, sculpting, and doing makeup. Also she leaves a comment on her video about what materials she uses to accomplish each look, and also links the website she uses to buy those materials, which is useful to help provide me with the tools I need to accomplish what I want to do for my capstone.

jordanhanz. “Love Sick Evil Mermaid Makeup Special FX Tutorial.” YouTube, YouTube, 10 May 2016, www.youtube.com/watch?v=ea8sx1OAifc.

This is another inspiration for one of the looks I will be doing for my capstone. This video is a sick mermaid look. She uses blue paint as a base. She uses model magic clay to make the different textures. She uses different techniques such as contouring as well as what she does for sculpting, learning from her work and being self taught is the best thing for me so that’s why I really think this source is reliable. I also take into consideration what she uses to accomplish this specific look. I’m using her work as reference, but some advice she had given about how you can use reference pictures or videos, but I would have to consider my own body and my own features as I’m doing each look.

jordanhanz. “Heaven and Hell Angel Halloween Makeup Tutorial | Jordan Hanz / Kristen Leanne.” YouTube, YouTube, 22 Oct. 2015, www.youtube.com/watch?v=zVzweoMpqW4.

Jordan Hanz did this tutorial, she did an amazing job of showing each of the steps as for how she did this angel look. She did an angel and devil collab with another makeup artist, Kristen Leanne. She does her version of a look, but then she encourages other people to create their own style with a similar look. That is a part of my inquiry is how can I make my own style and make my own look while using someone else’s work for reference. I will be using mainly her work for reference, however I do want to develop my own work, as well as my own style of art.

jordanhanz. “Pop Art Demon Halloween Makeup Tutorial w/ RawBeautyKristi.” YouTube, YouTube, 3 Oct. 2016, www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsJeLSB6cWo.

For this video, Jordan Hanz does a demon look. This was also a collab with another makeup artist as well, with Raw beauty Kristi. They each made their own different versions of one similar look, put their own twist into it. In the beginning of the video Jordan Hanz shows both of their versions of their own looks. Seeing them side by side shows how different they can be, the differences in their styles of artwork they both achieve. This gives me a general idea for what I might want to do, I want to make a look using my own methods and make it custom to my body.

jordanhanz. “Unattainable Woman | Jordan Hanz.” YouTube, YouTube, 11 Sept. 2015, www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubcOx1JfLto.

This video is really based on what it’s like being a woman in our society, Jordan hanz uses a lot of the words that are really known to describe women within our culture, and she wrote it on her body. She was very creative, I want to do something similar, only really with makeup, and what people’s points of views are on it. Therefore is why i want to do a survey so that I can use the words from the survey for this specific look for the capstone project. I’m thinking about making this one into a video because I think that will bring out a more powerful message.

NikkieTutorials. “The Power of MAKEUP!” YouTube, YouTube, 10 May 2015, www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4Ov8qvZ2_w.

Nikkietutorials is another makeup artist i know of, she has been a makeup artist on youtube for around nine to ten years. I’ve watched so many of her videos in the past where she has done multiple different kinds of makeup looks. One of the videos I would like to do is called,”The power of makeup.” Where only half of the face has makeup, and the other half doesn’t. I saw this video of doing the power of makeup, which inspired me to do it as well as a part of my capstone project. It really shows how much makeup can really do, and shows a powerful message.

Renée, V. “Learn Some Horror Makeup Techniques from Oscar-Winning SFX Makeup Artist Rick Baker.” No Film School, 30 Oct. 2014, nofilmschool.com/2014/02/horror-makeup-techniques-from-oscar-winning-sfx-makeup-artist-rick-baker.

This source mainly talks about a special effects makeup artist, Rick Baker. It explains what he does in his work. At first I didn’t really think i could trust this source, but then I saw that there was a video, showing the process of making a prosthetic on a face. It shows the process, and what material and tools he uses. This source also explains if a person wants to be self taught, how they would learn that way. I think the part about being self taught was the most important part for me because the looks for the capstone project, are basically gonna be self taught. So I think it gave good advice by watching other people’s work, see their different styles, and create one of my own.

theepatrickstarrr. “THE POWER OF MAKEUP | PatrickStarrr.” YouTube, PArtick Star, 31 Aug. 2015, www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiq3M5d5T_A.

Patrick star is another makeup artist. As I was watching this video, it was interesting to see his transformation, and the different steps he took to get to the final look, as well as all of the techniques he uses. There are other videos by patrick star I have watched where he has talked about his journey with makeup, and how his career ended up becoming a makeup artist on Youtube. Which also inspired me to want to become a makeup artist in the future. Also made me think about how I would want to do something different and unique for my capstone.

Vinther, Janus . Special Effects Makeup . Drama of Nygade, 2002.

This is a special effects makeup book explains how it is used in movies and how makeup can make the movies looks so real. Another thing about this source is that it talked about some of the history behind special effects makeup art. She uses different movies as examples for the history, “like 1895 the execution of queen mary when the special effects artist make it seem like her head was getting chopped off.” It’s good to know how makeup art began and the history of it. It also talks about working with different materials, like wax, and what it can be used for, like making artificial wounds. I also explains how to create different effects with the skin, making bruises or making it look like cuts on the skin.

“What Does a Special Effects Makeup Artist Do? A Conversation with Christien Tinsley.” CreativeFuture, 5 Oct. 2017, creativefuture.org/special-effects-makeup-artist-conversation-christien-tinsley/.

When I first looked at this source, I was a little hesitant on whether or not this was a reliable source. But I decided to look more into it, and then I saw that it was an interview. Interviewer, Gregg Lagambina was interviewing a makeup artist, Christien Tinsley. They talked about a lot of her interests that lead her to becoming a special effects makeup artist. They also talked about the schooling process of getting where she wanted to be in her career, as well as making a portfolio and getting the tools and materials she needed in order to complete her portfolio and get into a career she wanted to be in. She also does happen to talk about Rick baker, and how she worked with him on the set of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” This source is helpful for me because hearing from another makeup artist, and listening to the process of how she became a makeup artist. What she had to do to become very successful in her career.

I think I could have done better throughout this quarter as far as getting the assignments done on time. I definitely need to work on some time management, so that I can get things done in a timely manner. I think I did pretty well with the coat of arms, I was able to really be focused and finish a good piece of work I did. Another piece that was one of my favorites was the choice piece I did, I did a sketch of some abstract work and then filled it in with sharpie markers to give it some color. I've always loved doing abstract work therefore I decided to do that for choosing my own art piece.

Senior Art Q2

Posted by Hayley Barci in Senior Art · Hull · A Band on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at 12:42 pm
For the first assignment, I had to do blind contour drawings, I wasn't able to look at my paper, I had to look at the object. It was a little difficult because I like to see what is on my paper, but it did teach me to pay more attention the object in front of me, and the surroundings. The next thing I did was the color pencil techniques, it taught me about different ways of shading and forming a shape to make it look more 3D, and more life like. Next I did the color wheels, I was focusing more on the colors, and they how they mix and go together. For the next assignment I did a color pencil portrait. I did start out by using a regular pencil to sketch it out, and then I began to add more shading, color, and texture to the image. Then I did the color pencil fruit, I did go to the videos Ms.Hull suggested. I watched the videos step by step and then started to create my drawings with the color pencils. Finally, I did the colorized blind contour drawings, I did the regular sketch in pencil and then I added more lines along the picture and I filled it in with different shapes and colors.

I think that during this quarter my pieces were out of my comfort zone a little bit. The first bike drawing was the hardest assignment for me because I usually do abstract work instead of drawing actual objects. I think these pieces over all were really challenging but it was worth all of the effort. I really enjoyed the mandala piece the most. I learned how to make one  while ago and it was a great experience to make another one. I also like the eye drawing because the eye is something I use quite often in my drawings.

Advanced Essay #4

Posted by Hayley Barci in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · E Band on Thursday, March 23, 2017 at 1:41 pm
Introduction:
My essay is basically about violence against oneself. As well as making a point about how violence is not only considered to be a physical act, it could also be mental or verbal. When someone points violence towards themselves, they usually have a reason behind the actions of self violence.

 Hayley Barci

3-16-17

Advanced Essay #4

Violence is a book, filled with many stories, but only one truth. However, it can be seen through many perspectives. However it seems to be most common that people think of violence as a physical act, in which could cause damage such as bruises and bleeding. The idea of violence is different for many people. Let’s also think of it as if it  an arrow, it can point in many different directions. It could be towards family, friends, enemies. Generally it isn’t an easy thing to deal with, and sometimes people use it because they don’t know how to deal with their own lives.

Violence doesn’t just include fists, words can also be used harshly against someone. They can be just as bad as a punch in the stomach or being shot in the head with a gun. Someone may use gun to kill someone else, or they could use it against themselves. Self harm can fit within the category of violence, however it can be seen as a coping mechanism, when in reality that not the case.  Causing that kind of harm to yourself, is not exactly the greatest way to `cope with struggles. Seeing self harm as a way to cope, is a perspective that certain people can have. That can become someone's reality, while others may not think that. Others may use self violence in a more mental way, like saying negative things about themselves, or saying that you’re not worth any effort.

I’ve personally had experiences with different kinds of violence. I was tossed on the floor by my own father, I was called several different names, however all of those experiences made it into a bad habit of me pointing all the violence towards myself. Think of that as if it were a routine, something that is consistent, you have other people point the violence towards you so many times. That could cause a negative impact on someone, making them think poorly of themselves. Therefore it becomes that cycle where it actually sticks in your mind, that you should be treated poorly. It begins to become something normal for you. This mainly happens because of the negative impact the people around them give.

Self harms fits into the category of self violence, like a glove. So right off the dot you automatically think about cutting. Well, that’s not the only way of self harming. Mental Health America states that there are multiple different types of self harming such as burning, head banging or hitting. That’s mainly the physical way of self violence. Saying bad things about yourself or someone saying things verbally can certainly have a huge impact on how they see themselves, or how they see other people. It takes time to heal from those sorts of actions. Especially when you basically have to learn how to do it yourself, since you’re the only one who knows what works for you.

Now, I know you're probably thinking; how can I help someone who faces self violence?  How can I help myself when I experience self violence? There are multiple way you can help yourself, and others as well. If someone you love is experiencing self violence, you just need to constantly tell them,”It’s going to be okay”. Remind them how beautiful/handsome they are. Push them through the struggles that they face. When you're suffering from self violence, you feel like the whole world is falling apart. Just know that you’re not alone. There are many ways to help yourself through those bumps in the road. Sarah shared her story on Reachout.com. She told her story through a letter to her old self. The one who suffered so much, it felt like she wasn’t living. It felt like she was dying.

With self violence, it doesn’t all happen in one day when it comes to healing; it takes time.

Podcast Interview

So this podcast was a very interesting I interviewed my mother whom was very open to being interviewed. The idea of work and wisdom can be a very debatable topic. My mother mainly talked about how certain struggles impacted her life, and how she ended up where she is today. I changed my mind as to how I made the ending, at first I was gonna end with a narration, or a my mother reading the bible, however I decided to have the ending flow because my mother began talking about me and how it's basically my choice on how to live my life. Based off of that I want the audience to believe that they have a choice no matter the situation.
I think doing the podcast put my mother a I closer together, understanding her struggles, and what she goes through, throughout the day. This podcast also was difficult in a sense of how personal it really got, and how emotional it can get seeing someone talk about their struggles. However it was a good experience seeing another perspective other than my own.

Advanced Essay #3 (Identity and Child Abuse)

Posted by Hayley Barci in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · E Band on Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at 10:02 am
My message for this essay is how negatively impacting a child's life at a young age can impact the development of the identity later on. identity can take time to form, sometimes even someone's whole life. When someone at a young age gets a negative vibe from someone, they will continue it on to someone else as they get older. People will see them as bad people. Someone will be able to develop their true self around a positive environment. I want people to make a change for children's lives based off of the fact that it can impact their lives and their identity.

Hayley Barci

1-10-17

Child Abuse

The identities of children need to be developed over their experiences, The people around them can impact them as well as what they learn from them. However if their experiences were negative and put against them, it can impact how they create the self that fits who they are as people.

My father was, and still can be abusive towards me, however however I was thirteen and my parents were about to go to court, and I was a little concerned on how my father was treating me. He would threaten me, curse at me, and he would yell continuously. I then searched verbal abuse, I fit within almost all of the symptoms. I’ve never felt such fear as when I’m around my father. It’s really a cycle, my father was physically abused when he was a child, he would get hit with a belt, get hard shoes thrown at him. Somehow, that continued on to me, my theory was because he didn’t know how to cope with his past, what he has to deal with, so therefore, he takes it out on me. There are children all around the world suffer from child abuse, and people need to be more aware and stand up for what's right. We don’t want the cycle of abuse to continue throughout people’s families, we want children to peacefully be able to see the world through a positive lens. However, even throughout my experiences, I’m still trying to figure out who I am as a person. One’s identity should be cherished, not abused.

Identity is built upon experiences, environments, and the people you are surrounded by, all of these examples contribute to developing your true self. However, sometimes these things can become somewhat of a disaster to an identity. One’s self is also developed based upon experiences, and learning new things in our lives. Edward P. Jones wrote a story about a little girl on the first day of school, he quoted,”Mama, I can’t go to school?” The little girl stood still in shock as the woman her mother speaks to says that she cannot apply to the school she wanted to go to. Children are at a young age where they never really learned that much about who they are, their capabilities, and their true self.

As it was said earlier, identity takes time to fully develope, sometimes maybe even most of someone’s life. Thandie Newton once said during a TED Talk,” we are not born with a self, an identity.” She realized that we as people don’t know who we are the day we are born. It takes experiences and learning to develop a sense of who you are, and your identity. She also explains her own experiences to find her own identity. Your experience while finding your identity can be different from the person you're sitting next to. No one’s identity is the same, no one’s learning and processes are the same.

I was inpatient in Fairmount hospital  multiple times, and many of the girls I was with shared their stories about their parents/guardians abusing them. But there was one story in particular that caught my eye. It was the beginning of the summer of 2016, and I was just one day from leaving inpatient. I shared a room with this one girl. She seemed to be calm enough to talk to her.  We began talking and we ended up speaking about our abuse stories. She then began talking about her mother, her father was never in her life, and because of the abuse she suffers from trauma. She would have several different outbursts, and because it put other lives at risk, she would have to be strapped onto a bed overnight or until she calmed down.

I began to get to know her a little more about her mother and what she did to her. Her mother would hurt them by punching and kicking her and her siblings. Her mother also barely gave them food, but when she did, her mother would make her and her siblings eat it off the floor. As she spoke these words flowing out of her mouth, I could see the sorrow within her voice. This is one of many experiences of child abuse.

These are a couple different stories of kids/teenagers who are or were suffering from child abuse. These stories connect to a matter of their identity and how it impact their lives. Each child was impacted in a different way, they don't each have the same reaction to other people’s actions. When it comes to one’s self, it can depend on the person and their experiences.

“Backing me into the corner until I was whimpering and crying, he would just walk away, satisfied with my distress,” This was a quote from a girl named Fiona, who decided to tell her story. She explained her idea of abuse by also demonstrating  her own experiences Her story was mainly about the verbal abuse she and her mother had to suffer from her step-father. She wanted the message to be known that abuse is no right in any way, shape, or form. Her purpose was to also encourage other children to stand up and speak, so that there can be positive changes before it impacts their life permanently. Just because it’s emotional or verbal, and it’s not physical doesn’t mean that it’s not abuse. Sometimes verbal/emotional abuse can have more longer term effects than physical abuse, however that depended upon the child.

“We reported my dad to the police but there wasn’t enough evidence to convict him.” This story was spoken from a teenager named Tia, she suffered from sexual abuse provoked by her biological father who had just gotten released from jail. He would touch her in inappropriate places where he shouldn’t be. When she finally had the courage to tell her mother, they pressed charges against her father. However due to “the lack of evidence”, he got away with doing what he did to his own daughter. There are several different forms of abuse. However, they need to make sure that the abuser doesn’t treat other children the same way. The kids who were already suffering from the causes of abuse, need justice, they need some form of relief that the abuser will not strike upon other kids.

There are several different effects of child abuse, like for example,” The most serious cases of abuse can end in death”.  Like it was said earlier, it’s depended upon the child and how they react to the actions of people surrounding them. People need to realize, that standing up for a child, can save their life, their sanity, even their identity. If children are treated poorly, they will react poorly to his/her actions. As they try to grow their ‘self’, they will struggle, they could turn to drugs, or even suicide. So therefore, identity is something that doesn’t happen in one day, it happens with time and patience. The developing of one's self, times time, and sometimes even most of someone’s life. When a child is getting abused, they will not be able to fit to the self that fits who they are and their personality.

You can make a change in many children's lives. One of the first steps to helping a child is that you can recognize the symptoms within their behavior. You can look up the symptoms on many websites like Nemours Kidshealth, can explain what child abuse is, different forms of it, and the symptoms as well. You can call for help to hospitals, police, and other emergency contacts. Another way you can change a child's life is when you speak up, and encourage them, and teach them what’s right and what’s wrong with how they are being treated. Patience is another way to help a child gain their strength and even their true identity back. Taking time with the child, take things one step at a time and help him/her cope with what they have to deal with. Identity is truly important in a child, don’t let them suffer because of someone else’s actions.

Advanced Essay #2 Hayley Barci

Posted by Hayley Barci in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · E Band on Thursday, November 3, 2016 at 4:47 pm

Hayley Barci                                                                                                                     Oct.26.2016

I remember being bullied, because of the way I looked, the way my body was shaped, I was different. I was always trying to fit in with the the popular kids, with their huge groups of friends.  Meanwhile, I had one true friend, Abby. She meant the world to me. We would always play in the big backyard of her house, and have teddy bears wrapped up in between our arms. I could be whatever I wanted to be around my best friend. I can still remember all of the times we would get in trouble for silly things and how we would play witches in her bedroom, with brooms in between our thighs, flying in the magical skies.

The bullies would always bring me down, I fall, and I would stay on the ground. I would end up home, with my face, showing no emotions of the pain I suffered Every single goddamn day. I would always think of myself as an ugly person, or better yet, a thing. It was as if I were an alien, people poking at me with their sharp tools, drawing pain throughout my veins. An unbearable,  stinging, burning pain, attached to my soul. I would never tell my parents about my troubles. I kept every word inside my tight throat, it was suffocating.

“These stories changed me deeply”, the narrator admits in the beginning of A Place to Stand. I began to open my eyes, and realize that dominance is a way of life in our communities, and in our culture. It’s always the goal to be on a higher standard than everybody else, in different manners. Some nationalities have more knowledge than others, so therefore they use that supply of knowledge in order to gain more power in our nation.

I began to get older as I was starting the realize what I have and didn’t have, I was lucky enough to have all of my needs. I knew I couldn’t get everything thing that I wanted like a milion dollars, or a huge house, or a fancy car. My mother had many struggles with money, pay bills, or insurance, or medical bills. “We were poor by most standards, but one of my parents usually managed to find some minimum job or another, which made us middle class by reservation standards,” as claimed in Superman & Me. That’s that situation that certain people have to deal with in our society.    It has always been a heartache watching her struggle, meanwhile some people have all of the money in the world and have a lot of things that we need. The dominance that people of higher class posses is extremely powerful. Using it in order to receive more money from those who don’t really have it.

This society that many people including myself are exposed to, has impacted the way we live. The amount of money that someone has can be relatable to how much knowledge you have. Sometimes people take advantage of the amount of knowledge they have against others, saying that they have more than someone else. That’s how a lot of people are today, trying to be more dominant than everyone else. That’s  what our society has become, and sadly, that the way it will be.Some people are not known for their knowledge, because others may think that it’s not as informative as their own, or not as important.

Well, after all, “if you want to be American, speak American”, stated in How to Tame a Wild Tongue. That’s often the case when it comes to knowledge, it’s like many people have expectations of you, the way to act, the way you read, write or speak. You are meant to have a higher stand when it come to literacy, and in how you interpret it. How you use the knowledge, and how much impact it will have on others.

These kinds of impacts can be positive for someone who wants more dominance when it comes to literacy and knowledge. For instance, in the United States we have the PSSA’s, PSAT’s, etc in order to measure how much structured learning they obtain. These sorts of situations occur in schools, colleges, jobs, and in multiple different accommodations. Children in many schools get bullied because maybe they don’t understand something in class, or maybe because they learned about literacy at a slower pace.

People of many backgrounds, also receive judgements for what kind of knowledge their families, or ancestors possess. In which can be an issue because you are not exactly your family members, you are not your ancestors, you have a life, and a mind of your own.

In conclusion, our society is built upon dominance when it’s mainly cemented into our culture and how we function this into our everyday lives.

A Twist on Shakespeare

I basically did a little twist on both Macbeth and Othello. With Macbeth I basically did it through the point of view of lady Macbeth right before she dies. With Othello, I did it through the point of Desdemona after she dies, please go on the website and see what happens, thank you !

My personal favorite piece that I did was the ceiling tile because it was a different type of art that I usually do, so therefore I decided to jump out of my comfort zone, and I think that it turned out pretty good. The Self-portraits weren't really my thing, however I do think I did pretty good for a beginner.

Shakespearean thoughts

I created two monologues based off of Shakespeare's stories Macbeth and Othello, however I made a little bit of a twist based off of both of these stories.
My inspiration was definitely Shakespeare, his stories just seem to give my new perspectives on writing.
the tragic love stories, the dramatic endings, gave me the idea, of maybe I could do the same thing. However by taking the characters, and going into their minds, and into how they think. I did this within my own writing, but with a Shakespearean twist.

Advanced Essay #1 (The Masterpiece of my Life)

Posted by Hayley Barci in English 3 · Block/Franz/Taylor-Baranik · E Band on Thursday, September 22, 2016 at 1:31 pm

Hayley Barci September 14th, 2016 The masterpiece of my life: It was a fair-weather day, the sun rays shimmering between the falling leaves of the trees, standing tall throughout the park. The fresh smell of the air inhaling, and exhaling through my nostrils. The bright, white piece of paper, with lines, circles, and different kinds of shapes. The start of a new drawing, staring me in the eyes, speaking it’s own words of wonders, wondering how I should finish this masterpiece. My mother spoke,”It is a beautiful piece you have created, my dear.” Expanding my mind into all the geographic shapes, I could possibly think of. I, as a woman, thought of the hourglass shape, that every possible woman has. Thinking to myself,”maybe……..just maybe, I could put that idea into my piece. Somehow I could tell the story of my experiences through my sophisticated, yet simple drawing. My pencil began making wonders, from tear drops, to flowers. From skies to waters, and sights never seen. The tears of hope streaming down my face, within the past and present experiences. This is was a moment of hope and joy. The love and passion I had put into this piece, reflects all of the challenges and fears I had to face throughout my life. I was always focused on the destination, instead of the journey. I then, gained that faith that pushes me through all of the challenges I face.

As I began to get distracted through the nature that surrounds my body and soul, I decided, I want to capture these beautiful views. I then slipped out my camera out of my bag, began to capture the memories seen through my own eyes. My mother looked over my shoulder, then spoke,”What beautiful pictures you’ve taken”, I replied,”sure”. Not believing any comments that have come my way. Unsure of whether or not they’re true or not. Not realizing the true meaning of loving myself, and self care.

Reminding me of the day, My whole world was flipped upside down. It was the beginning of my freshman year of highschool, I was petrified, and afraid of myself. I’m in tears, staring down at the shimmering light, reflected on the knife, lying in the palm of my hand. Thinking that the whole world is against me, I began slowly facing the knife towards my chest. Until, I hear the soft, fearful voice,”Hayley, please, put, the knife, down. I turn my head towards the right. I can see the fear within her eyes, and the shakiness within her fingers. Blaming myself for what I had just done. My mind speaking,”It’s all your fault, your mother now hates you for what you have done to her.” I’m fighting with everything i’ve got in order to make it through these challenges, but I could never succeed. At least I thought I couldn’t.Within the next day, I ended up in the hospital, or better yet, hospitalized. I was hospitalized five different times within two years. While I was inpatient, I would color, draw, and do many things that made happy, and made me feel good inside. It didn’t really matter what other people think, as a long as it makes you happy.

Through my art, I was able to realize that life wasn’t just a terrifying dream, I was able to realize that these journeys are priceless, that it’s the journey that matters, not the destination. My strength grows every single day, I believe in myself more, as I go. Art is my reflection of those challenges, and journeys that come my way. I’m in control of my life now, and not one soul can change that, nor bring me down, because here’s one thing for sure, I will, get back up. I’ve learned to not care about what other people think of me, i’ve learned about my own self-care. You shouldn’t care about what other people think of you, their opinion is not important, only your own opinions matter. Just because you have self care doesn’t mean that you’re a selfish person. It just means that you are expanding yourself and your own being. I myself was bullied for eight years straight, after all of those years of being beaten down, I found my strength within art. Within all of the colors, and the geographic shapes. Lost within all of the wondrous words to describe the masterpiece, of my life.

World Legacy

Everyone has wondered why leaders are the way they are, so kind and selfless, or selfish, greedy, and so tight-fisted. Maybe there’s a deeper understanding into how certain leaders treat their people with respect, or unfairness, while others choose to use people’s fear in order to rule or to stay in power. Some leaders have even used these qualities, and their position of power to take advantage of others. Or to make others feel small. This can be seen in various different stories and even in our lives today. For example, this has been shown in people today, such as Donald Trump, it it shown in certain characters in “The Lord of the Flies” as well.  Leaders use fear to be better than everyone else by being in a position of power that no one else has.

Such as, in the scene of the The Lord of the Flies (182), when Ralph is speaking to the twins while they are guarding the castle rock, they are talking about how if Jack and his tribe found him, they will torture him, or even kill him. This links back to the thesis statement about how leaders use their peoples’ fear in order to rule over them. This is what jack is doing with his tribe, and even to people who are not apart of it, in which they bring fear upon even more than the people who are already in his tribe. He’s threatening the people in his own tribe, even more so than those outside of it. However I find Ralph to be of an interesting character because he seems to have that desire to be a leader, however not a selfish kind of leader, one that is full of respect and trust.

Donald Trump also has this kind of affect on people, especially the ones who vote for him because they are giving in to his influence, which is giving him more power. For example, when he said, “The World Trade Center came down during the reign of George Bush. He kept us safe? That’s not safe, Marco. That is not safe,” he continued. “The World Trade Center came down because Bill Clinton (didn’t) kill Osama Bin Laden when he had the chance to kill him. And George Bush-by the way, George Bush had the chance, also, he also didn’t listen to the advice of the CIA.” Trump was saying how he could’ve prevented nine-eleven if he was the president at the time. That’s using people’s fear of nine-eleven to his advantage so that he can get elected for president. However realistically that wouldn’t be the case, if he never even had any sort of presidential experience what so ever. Also how the situation had already occurred, and we can't take it back no matter how hard we tried.  Even if he was president, he wouldn't have been able to prevent something as huge as that.

However, being a leader can be a difficult task, but when it comes down to it, you must make the right decision for your people, and put them first instead of yourself. When Jack says,”See?! They only listen to me!”, (179) when all of the children are at the castle rock. Jack was arguing with Ralph right around where piggy dies. This event proves the thesis statement because of how Jack is trying to rule over his tribe with fear, using harsh words, or even violence. In which it is the leader’s choice on how they would want to treat their people, and Jack chose to treat his people very poorly.

An example of this behavior also took place during world war two, when over 60 million people were, shot, burned, and put to their death. This all began because one single man wanted power, Adolf Hitler. He once said,” Any alliance whose purpose is not the intention to wage war is senseless and useless.” He’s saying how unless it is concluded that war is the purpose of being a leader, than it’s useless. However that shouldn’t be the case, the fact that a great leader is someone who avoids war and violence at all times.

In conclusion, leaders must always be brave for their people, no matter the situation, however not every leader is full of such kindness, and such delicacy, meanwhile other leaders have chosen the path of taking over the power of fear, in which doesn’t get them that far. Leaders choose which direction they want to go, and how they rule over their people.

The Difficulty of Living

Posted by Hayley Barci in English 1 - Giknis - X on Monday, April 27, 2015 at 5:09 am

Blog Post #1:

My topic is going to be Depression and Anxiety (for any age group). I am interested in this topic because I myself was recently diagnosed with depression and anxiety, and it’s fascinating because this is something that can developed over time or maybe after a certain event. Also how there is so many in’s and out’s to it, and how it can be different for everybody. Depression is basically chemical imbalance in the brain, that causes a lot of mental and physical symptoms that can affect you and your loved ones.

This issue is significant because Depression and Anxiety is one of the main causes of disability, and even death. It is extremely important to be aware about it because you never know when or if you would run into this kind of situation in desperate need of help. Depression and Anxiety is basically an imbalance in your brain. Everyone every now and then gets a little blue sometimes, however if you are waking up in tears almost every morning, feel like you are dragging your feet 24-7.

At this point I’m wondering how educated people are these days about this subject, I also question what I haven’t learned yet about Depression and Anxiety. I’m hoping that I can find great ways to explain this kind of subject because it can be extremely difficult sometimes explaining to others what seems confusing sometimes yourself.

Lady of Nightfall

I'm looking forward to present my painting to everyone. I would really like for people to see my point of view on who Lady Macbeth is as a person. Also, I would also like for people to see how I compare to her and how that's why I chose to pick her for my benchmark project. If I could change up my project. I probably would've gotten a bigger canvas, and make the images and quotes larger so that everyone can see it instead of having to come up close to see and understand the painting.
