Second podcast, Imani and Amirah
Imani Weeks Capstone
When we first introduced the project to the principal at Wagner Middle School she was more than happy to let us have the mentor program their and to help us. We choose Wagner Middle School because Amirah’s mom works there. A permission slip was sent home to the girls who were going to attend the program, so that their parents know and are okay with what we were going to be talking about with their daughters and taking pictures for evidence. We had girls in sixth to eighth grade. When the girls first walked in they had food, snacks and drinks waiting for them.
I wanted to do a mentor program because I know that I am a good role model for young girls and can teach them the importance of having morals.

Guidance was needed to start the mentor group so that young girls know the ways of life. We had to make a permission slip for the girls, so that their parents were okay with what we were going to be talking about and if they’re okay with their child being photographed for our project.

All of ingredients had to be required and needed to produce what was needed to produce. The girls will accomplish at least learning how to make a food, if there is nothing else to eat. It is a great way to learn something new and it’s fun. The have to learn the ways of being an adult. Their parents is not going to be there for them all the time to make food. It’s also something to can surprise their mom and dad with on Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.

One of the ingredients for the tacos or something that were included in the tacos were salmon. Since salmon is an uncooked food and can be very bad if eaten uncooked can be a terrible thing. The girls were shown how to cook a raw fish. It doesn’t have to be burnt but it can be well done. They have the choice of following something that is very helpful for them and give them options of different sauces to put on the salmo. It gives the tacos a certain flavor that they might like. They would be proud of theirself for cooking something so good.

One of the lesson plans that was for the young girls was to talk about parents. As young girls, you and your parent can tend to clash and “bump heads” a lot. Young girls feel like they know it all and that their mom is being mean for telling them what to do. When in all the mom is trying to help them. They don’t understand that. This conversation was to teach them not everything has to be an argument. They need to know that they can have great relationships with their self and their parents.

Social Media is a very opinionated place. Not everybody follow the rule “if you don’t have nothing nice to say don’t say it at all”. People are cruel now and days and everyone has a social media account no matter if it’s instagram, twitter, snapchat, kik and periscope. It allows you to put yourself out there but people need to learn the what side of their self to make public. Anybody can go look at your stuff and know who you are or what type of person you are just by your captions and the pictures you put up. Everything needs to be PG-13 because there are older woman out here not setting the right example.

The mentor group is at Wagner Middle School, although Wagner Middle School is a good school, it can always improve. Students can always benefit from their school becoming better. The girls need to know that getting degrees is very important and needed in life to have a comfortable living. It’s good to see what other schools talk about or do when it comes to their school. We can do the same thing they do and probably do it better.
Beyonce for Gender Equality
The person, activists I’ve choose that made an impact of gender equity is Beyonce. Many people may share different views, but I personally think she is the perfect spokesperson for gender equality. For those who don’t know Beyonce Giselle Knowles-Carter is a singer, songwriter, record producer, actress, mom and a wife. She hole many titles as you can see. She was born in raised in Houston, Texas and worked her way up to the top of the charts.
As a young girl Beyonce experienced depression. After all the struggles of switching companies and her parents getting a divorce. Her breaking point was when a friend and also member of the group, LeToya Luckett decided to leave the group because she was unhappy. Beyonce was devastated and fell into depression which led to her boyfriends leaving her. She stayed for days at a time. Beyonce spoke that it was her mother that helped her through it. Having a strong figure, especially that figure being your mother can make someone be an even better woman and mother. She saw woman as strong creatures and wanted to let them know that.
She addressed gender inequality by calling herself a “modern day feminist”. Many people threw salt on her for that saying she shouldn’t call herself that when she exposes her body in her performances and in her videos. How can one say that when she creates song that are for girl empowerment. She literally have a song titles “Run the World.” It’s sending a message about females that have their own life. That are independent and how we should be more confident in ourselves. Now it wasn’t to put males down or make them feel less about their self. It’s just that people are always coming at females. I know males that also love the song.
Beyonce know the true meaning of being a feminist. And it means believing in equal rights for men and woman. She understands that telling your daughter to be vulnerable and not your son is problem. She understand that a woman making 75 cents to a dollar is a problem.
TIMELINE
2015 Beyonce and Michelle Obama calls for Gender Equality
2015 The conversation is popular – and yes, mostly thanks to Beyonce.
2014 From dancing in front of bright “FEMINIST” lights at the Superbowl (reaching an audience of approximately 140 million), to featuring the very definition of feminism read by novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie smack in the middle of a hit single, Beyonce has put her starpower to use for gender equality.
Now, popularizing the conversation doesn’t mean that feminism itself is popular. We certainly have a ways to go on that front. But I am encouraged by the frequency with which the topic appears in the mainstream media and everyday conversation.
Men and women are uniting behind gender equality
Speaking at Georgetown University’s Own It Summit this past weekend, I couldn’t help but notice the men who had been involved in not only attending the summit, but actually organizing and staffing it.
Women are supporting women
Tearing down other women in the workplace is about as en vogue as shoulder pads. In today’s socially-networked workplace especially, we recognize that the success of our fellow ladies is only good for us.
Intersectionality is everything
As the conversation around gender equality becomes more popular, so too have voices fighting for equality along racial, social, sexual, and economic lines as well. We still have a long ways to go in solving feminism’s white woman problem, but I see more feminists working together across what used to be boundaries.
It’s no longer acceptable to have a conversation about gender inequality without discussing other forms of discrimination as well. And that’s damn encouraging.
Corporate America has bought in
Love her or hate her, the 1%-er perspective of Sheryl Sandberg was exactly what the 1%-er leaders across corporate America needed to hear to get on board with gender equality. Lean In absolutely made the business case for unleashing women’s full potential in the workplace, and since then we’ve seen many of the largest American companies – led by Facebook – instituting policies designed to attract, retain, and develop women leaders.
For all these reasons and more I’m optimistic about the direction we’re heading, though it’s clear huge challenges remain. For starters, it’s time for our government institutions to catch up with these new realities and provide for sane parental leave policies that help women (and men!) lead full lives at home and work.

Puerto Rico and Guam
This info graphic is mainly about the U.S and the way they take control over everybody and everything. They use war to scare people into doing what they want and use money to wave their power in people faces. I have a tiny paragraph that states what they did to Puerto Rico and Guam, but I wanted the pictures to show how they did it and what they used.

Mary Had A Little Lamb
Mary Had A Little Lamb was just published. Everybody is using it as a nursery song. The song was published by an American schoolteacher. She was a novelist then she became a magazine editor. Here name is Sarah Josephina Hale. She was born in New Hampshire 1788 and died 1879. The nursery rhyme was published in May, people say it was published times before.
The song was inspired by a little girl that went to her school. Her name was Mary Sawyer and she

Looking for Alaska Book Review
Looking for Alaska is not the regular boy-meets-girl love story with all the smoking, drinking, sex and money. It wasn’t all about all those interesting things, it had common teenage drama, just more juicer. It made you think back on your own life and decisions. I’m a person that mostly read books that are urban. Non-urban books would have to be requested to me, so reading Looking for Alaska was a big, fantastic change. it helped understand the loss of an important person and learn how to accept others and their choices. The overall setting of the book is the characters attending a boarding school, that definitely divided the poor and rich, which they talk a lot about in the book. They call the rich kids the “Weekday Warriors”, because they go to school during the week, but then they go home to their nice houses every weekend. Mr.Green also introduce common teenage rituals like pranks, parties and crazyt bets.
John Green was born August 24, 1977 in Indianapolis. Three weeks after his birth his family moved to Michigan, Alabama then finally settled in Florida. He used his own personal adventures to put into Looking for Alaska. Green has spoken openly about being bullied and how it made his teenage life miserable. Want to know how he got the idea to write The Fault In Our Stars? John actually worked at hospital as a student chaplain while he was enrolled at University of Chicago Divinity School, although he never went because his experience of working with children with life-threatening illness inspired him to be an author and later on write The Fault In Our Stars. He won multiple Awards for his books in his career. In 2007 Green and his brother, Hank, started video blogs to communicate on Youtube. Through his videos he caught the attention of a community called the nerdfighters, they raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to fight poverty around the world. John and Hank continue to upload video twice a week on their youtube channel : vlogbrothers. Green has been a finalist twice in the Los Angeles Times Book Prize. Last but not least Green’s books has been published in more than a dozen languages.
The main character, Miles “Pudge” Halter was not popular at all back in his hometown in Florida. His life become the complete opposite of what it use to be. He has friends now, and experience things he never thought he would come face to face to. The one person that gave pudge a reason to make Culver Creek, his boarding school, a great place was the emotionally confused, mysterious and beautiful Alaska Young. They grew an undefying attachment towards each other. Alaska was a closed person about her personal life, yet she was so outspoken and straight forward on her beliefs and what she thought. Pudge and his roommate, the Colonel, not his real name, become close as friends also. Colonel was the take charge friend and believed that he should be loyal to his friends and they should be loyal back no matter what. He didn’t have much back home, but his heart was bigger than anything and he loved his mother more than anything in the world. He is not as forgiving as Pudge, but he soon learn how to be.
The importance of reading a young adult book is the similarities you have with your own life. The author just gets what your going through and put your thoughts in ways you can’t express on your own. I think the reason I connected with this book is because it caught me at a questionable time in my life. I was having mixed feelings and didn’t know the direction I was heading. One question that is going to come up a lot in the book is how to escape a labyrinth you are out in, a labyrinth is like a maze. And I took and, and still do, that question with me through my everyday life. No matter if it was me and my mom arguing, stressed about school, whatever it was I found a way to face it and actually deal with it instead of running away from it then having to face it or deal with it again later. The confidence of the character and the strong will they have for their opinions made me stronger for mine.

In Looking for Alaska there was a divide between the rich in poor kids. It led me to think we are kids why are we worried about somebody else if we wasn’t in their shoes. People don’t enjoy their life anymore, they would rather sit around be mean to others and gossip. Why are we treating others with such disrespectful if we are all going to end up in one place? Six feet under.
Central Park Five
Imani Weeks
Central Park Five
Race is always the go to answer or this happen because of the skin color for everything. Even today after slavery and segregation is banned there is still racism against every race. Central Park Five shows how the color of your skin can put you in a bad position, even your gender is enough to ruin your life. Five young black and latino boys were arrested for a crime they did not commit and even served time for something that had nothing to do with them. Your race and gender will make you a target when people don’t know the true or full story.
In the movie Central Park Five they had different people speaking on the case. It was mostly the victims that were accused, their parents and media journalist. They were describing how it was back then around the time the crime was committed and how everything went downhill when the five boys got arrested. When the movie first started one thing that stuck out to me was when Rev. Calvin Butts and he was talking about young black men and one thing he said was “The most endangered species in American, that was a popular phrase, was young, black man.” When he said this my mind was based off of that one sentence the whole time I was watching the movie. It is not a coincidence that five, young, black and latino males were arrested, better yet accused for something they didn’t do. There was nothing that they could have done to get them out of the situation they didn’t deserve to be in, except changing their skin color and gender.
Yusef Salaam, Antron McCray, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, Korey Wise. and more than 25 others teenaged boys entered central park together. While his friends were being arrested “I basically said what’s going on then he said didn’t I tell you not to run you little animal, something like that...” Why did he have to call that young boy an animal? I don’t think this officer will ever call his friends animals. I think it’s weird that they never revealed the skin color of this officer. It’s shocking because everybody looked at this case as a racial and gender issue, but they never once told people the names and color of the officers, only the boys and lady that was raped. I’m wondering if they trying to hide something and if they are what exactly are they trying to hide.
To identify somebody, one of the first thing you would say is “Oh, he look mexican.” or “I thought he was white.” I know it’s easy to point somebody out based on skin complexion or color but you can’t do that especially during an important case you don’t want to seem like racism. The district attorney lady that was interviewing the kids to get their confession on video did exactly that. “First it was the black boy then it was the puerto rican guy then you got on top of her?” The guy she is referencing that is puerto rican is Antron McCray and he is also mixed with African American. The black guy could have been any of the three other boys. She knew exactly what they names were but she decided to picked them out by color. That wasn't helpful at all for him to say yes he did it. It could have been any “black boy” that was being interrogated. I know the boy getting interviewed wrote their names down during the false confession because the detectives were telling them the names of the other boys.
Criminal Justice systems is not good. It’s unfair and not right. Back then and today. People always and will forever question that system. No matter what it has to do with. The media always seem to switch up stories or seem to have a huge affect on what others opinion is going to be. It was this one new paper that said “Grim test for the justice system.” While watching I’m sitting thinking like what do that mean test. After hearing oh there was no evidence against the boys just confessions that were told for them to say I knew exactly what it meant. The Justice system and people working for and with it has failed the test. I always wondered why didn’t they tell everybody that they didn’t have exact proof against the boys. Is it because they wanted the story to be over with? Did they just want to find people to blame it on or did they not want the people of their city to worry about things?
Working on this piece I realized it a lot that is going on with this case. A lady in the movie said that there was another rape around the same time as Central Park Five but it had absolutely no coverage because of the interracial part of it, and the lady got thrown off a roof. I can't help but think that it was because the lady was white and it was in Central Park, the holiest place a person can go back then besides a church. This reminded me of the Emmett Till story I learned when I was a kid. A young African American boy who whistled at a white lady and got killed for it, he done nothing wrong to hurt the lady but he life was taking. People were even talking about the death penalty for the boys. Donald Trump was willing to pay for it to come back. They were kids and they wanted them on the death penalty! More and more watching and reading articles about Central Park Five I think it’s all about the New York Police pointing out a group of innocent black males saying they committed a crime when they didn’t know what was going on or what to do. Your race and gender will make you a target when people don’t know the true or full story.
My Mistake I Can't Get Back
Imani Weeks
Mir, he was my first love, well after we had sex of course. It was still love though, the very first person to make me feel like I never had before. Like I can just be myself around him and not a stuck up pop star I’m getting paid to be. I can tell him anything, he know how my mom got me into this business, which I’m embarrassed to say, but I felt comfortable telling him. I gave him all of me and everything piece of my heart that I had. That can really keep a girl around forever you know? Have you ever felt that way before? Nevermind, probably not you're too old. Oh yeah back to the story, he should’ve been happy that he had me as a girlfriend. I was famous. Most beautiful, richest, and youngest person in the music industry. I know it was for publicity and all but I know he loved me deep down inside and he knew exactly how I felt about him because I told him every chance I got.
He took advantage of that. He broke me. Basically ended my career that night. That night changed everything.... I got out limbo with a glass of champagne in my hand, my heels clicking to the side walk every step of the way. I stopped and noticed that my lights were on but then I remembered I told my mom she can come by and get her things and never come back. So I walked right up to my bedroom when I heard silence, I knew something was wrong if my mother wasn’t making any noise. I decided to leave it alone though, I didn’t really care what she was doing and who with until I tried to call Mir, I heard a ringing from my moms room. It could’ve been her cell phone but I had a bad feeling that it wasn’t so I walked in and found my boyfriends phone on her damn bed. The shower was running and I heard moaning, I walked right in her bathroom to see a two bodies through the glass. When I opened it up I seen that bitch and my boyfriend fucking. Fucking in the damn shower. I didn’t know what else to do. I was so angry, betrayed and so hurt. I gave him my everything and he was giving my everything to my damn mom. A while later he gave back around the way, Yeah I let him in because we had to work things out but something took over me. I couldn’t control my actions, so I stepped right on his throat with my heel. I can’t lie though I miss him especially the late night... conversations.
Yeah I know I won’t have anymore chances but that’s something I don’t deserve but I seriously need to get out of this place. They made me pee in front of everybody. There wasn’t even a curtain I could hang up. The ladies was just staring at my goodies. The guards treated me like I was nothing, I have a fan base of over a billion kids and adults that copy my style. They better recognize I’m the shit. That’s exactly why I can’t be stuck in this nasty, dirty, hot, smelly hell hole. I’m a pop star dammit I don’t need this shit, I have money to make.
Don’t tell me what I should've thought of. At the time I was thinking of killing that bastard and I did when I really should’ve killed the bitch that birthed me. How can you do that to your own child? Would you do that to your daughter? No because you're not a hoe. I know she seduced him though, she’s a slut that’s what she do. Well anyway she’ll never get a check from me again. You can never really trust people not even your own mother. That’s the worst part about it. I learned that when I first got into this industry and I’m sixteen now. Do the math.
Yeah I grew up fast but anyways yo can you please like talk to the judge or something. Fuck am I paying you for? (picks up paper on the desk and throws them in the air)
Obviously you not that good if I’m still in this bitch. Can you please tell the judge I am sorry for what I have done, I didn’t mean to kill him it was just a reactive situation. Pretty please with a stac of money? Wait, why I am begging you? Your job is to get me outta here, so hurry up and do it please. (Smiles and walks away with attitude)

Cianni
You sure? You seem overly happy right now.
Sarah (laughs)

I’m going to have to ask my mom, hold on.
Sarah

Oh ... well where is the party?
Cianni
Around her way in the burbs.
Mom (turn to face her daughter while leaning against the counter)
Are you going ‘cause you sound like you don’t want to?
Cianni
I mean , yeah I want to get to know them but I feel like if I reveal my true self to them things will change and they will judge me.
Mom
You can’t always worry about what people have to say about you, that’s not living life honey.
Cianni
Yeah yeah yeah, easy for you to say.
Mom
Don’t get smart little girl.
Mom
Are you going?
Cianni
I guess.
Mom
I think you should go, it’ll be something different.
Cianni
You mean talking proper and sipping tea?
Mom
No I mean not running the streets with that girl Mercedes and try to figure yourself out. You can’t do that stuff your whole life. No no no not in my house. Now go get dress and stop giving me side looks.
(Cianni walks up to her bedroom and retrieve her cell phone)
Cianni
Sarah , you still there?
Sarah
Uh yeah ... what did she say?
Cianni
She said yeah it was a great idea.
Sarah

Cianni
Why can’t you just say the girl or her name? Always talking that slang stuff, and no he didn't. He said nothing happened and it was just a dance.
Mercedes
I should slap you right now trying to correct me, and a KISS is not just a kiss especially that one and if you're in a relationship & the person you kissed at a FRAT PARTY isn't your girlfriend.
Cianni
Well did you see it with your own eyes?
Mercedes
Dont try to play me like that of course I seen it I’m not blind. Why you think I'm telling you now?
Cianni (turned to face Mercedes with a confused look)
So when you seen us walking upstairs why didnt you tell me?
Mercedes
I thought y'all was going upstairs to go argue not make up.
Cianni
Well we did and its all your fault.
Mercedes
Now hold up, back up right there that is not my fault that your man didn't tell you wassup.
Cianni
As my friend if you see something don't you think you should tell me? Biggest person that gossip around here but you couldn't tell me that. Did that really happen or are you just trying to break us up? Tell me wassup.
Mercedes
I dont have to sit here and take this because you're too blind to see that he doesn't want you, he only want one thing . Guess what else? I was the one he was making out with at the party. Peace
Scene 4
Cianni and Sarah is having a conversation about Dallas.
Sarah
Why are you crying?
Cianni wipes her eyes
Sarah
Is it a boy, boyfriend, bestfriend, ex bestfriend, cramps, you ran out of chocolate? What’s wrong sweetie?
Cianni (stops crying and giggles)
Try ex boyfriend and ex bestfriend
Sarah
She stole your man?
Cianni (eyes widen)
I didn’t know you talk... with slang?
Sarah
I didn’t mean for it to slip out but yeah I do, its just I thought I would have to change my speaking because of the school we go to, you know people are all fancy here. When you slipped up at the party talking all this slang I knew I can open up to you.
Cianni (laughs)
I was really drunk huh?
Sarah (laughs)
Yes you really was.
Cianni
Good ‘cause all this proper talking is driving me crazy!
Sarah
Me too girl, but what happened between you and your boyfriend?
Cianni
Well my ex best friend Mercedes invited me to this frat party and my ex boyfriend was there and we had sex but I just found out that he kissed my friend Mercedes before we did, she has the nerve throw it in my face like it was something to be proud of.
Sarah (gasps)
Yo she a back stabber! If I was you I would... (Sarah stops talking and goes into her own thoughts)
Hour later Cianni is walking out of her last period of class.
Jonathan (running toward Cianni)
Hey Cianni wait up!
Cianni
Hey Jon!
Jonathan
Do you want to go grab something to eat?
Cianni (smiles)
... Sure I would love to.
Element Project
Research - I used research to figure out what I needed to know about my element. I had to find out what it's in, used for. That's how I figured out what I was going to draw.
Collaboration - I used collaboration when I needed help and gave out help to others. I needed help cutting out my negative space, because it wasn't working out well for me and making sure when i matted the paper it was even.
Presentation - I used presentation when I had to paint it and choose colors then I had to center it to make it look really good and for the most part, I think I did really good.
Reflection - I looked at my pictures just to examine and realize, "I did great" and then I completed the blog post.

Negative Space
B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your still life drawing? I knew that negative space was the space outside and in between the holes of the object in the drawing.
C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space? It helps so they can see the tricky parts of the object.D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not?
Yes because it show people all the aspects and sides of the drawing and it's another way of art without really sketching things out.Nuestras actividades

Acceptable Use Policy
Science Leadership Academy values of technology and encourages its use in creative ways to support student learning in a safe and secure learning environment. This policy is a guide to ensuring the appropriate use as well as safety for all community members. While these technologies provide powerful learning opportunities, they must be used responsibly.
These rules apply to any electronic device including laptops, mobile phones, MP3 players, gaming devices, digital cameras, any and all devices that are connected to the School District of Philadelphia network. Learning always takes priority while using SLA's wireless and hardwired internet connections.
Tresspassing
- Do not touch another personʼs laptop/device unless invited by the owner
- Do not play with, use, or change another personʼs user account
- Do not access another personʼs files or resources
- Only access areas of the network you have been given permission to access
No Fooling Around
- Do not load any game, video or music file on your machine that is not paid for or have the rights to use by you.
- Do not play games at school, unless sanctioned and agreed to by staff and parents
- Do not access inappropriate websites (obscene, violent etc) on your laptop
- Do not chat online or play music/videos unless given permission by your teacher
- Leave mobile phones turned off or in silent mode in your bags/pockets unless their use is sanctioned by a teacher for a learning activity or listening to music during independent work
- Do not post or send any message/picture/sound/video that is obscene, rude, harassing or insulting to anyone
- Do not attack, threaten or intimidate another student via technology (or otherwise)
- Do not take pictures or post pictures of others without asking their permission
No Hogging
No Stealing
- Do not download any illegal materials (e.g. cracked software, pirated music or movies, or any copyrighted materials) or intellectual property that was not purchased by you or that you do not have the rights to use
- Peer to peer file sharing is strictly prohibited and monitored by the School District of Philadelphia - these software programs can be detected by the District and they will shut off your access to the SDP Network
- Do not plagiarize i.e. present anybody elseʼs work as your own - for more information see SLAʼs academic integrity policy
- No spamming, hacking, hawking, or trolling
- Do not forward or send any content not directly associated with your learning (e.g. advertisements, games, pictures)
- Do not deliberately or negligently spread viruses, malware, or spyware
- Do not attempt to access any areas of the school network, or other peoplesʼ devices you do not have permission to visit
- Do not run a business or seek to make profit using the school network
Guidelines
- Science Leadership Academy and The School District of Philadelphia will monitor user data and internet access and check the contents of any electronic device brought onto the schoolʼs premises or on any official school event
- Educational use of the network and computer resources takes precedence over non- educational use including games not related to classwork
- This statement covers (but is not limited to) the use of electronic devices owned by the school and by students that are brought onto schoolʼs premises, or on excursions, camps or other official school functions - including computers, laptops, digital video and music players, cameras, other recording devices, mobile phones and organizers
- Science Leadership Academy reserves the right to ensure all student laptops have sufficient space to support learning activities. This may include the school need to deleting non-essential games, music and video files.
Laptop Audits
- Audits of student laptops can be done by any staff member at anytime.
Sanctions
- Confiscation of the device for a defined period
- Withdrawal of privileges including on-line access for breaches of on-line policy
- Withdrawal of the right to bring or use electronic devices to Science Leadership Academy
- Blockage from the network of any and all devices downloading illegal files such as music, video and photographs
- Community work for the Science Leadership Academy outside school hours
- Payment for cost of repairs
Sanctions for violations stated above may include the following measures:
Serious Breaches of Rules
- All incidences will be handled on a student by student basis
- Suspension or expulsion
- Law enforcement agencies may be involved
- Simple finder will be installed on your computer this which limits the applications on your laptop to strictly educational use
- The laptops are the School District of Philadelphiaʼs property. We strongly encourage that the insurance is paid for each year the laptop is in the hands of a student. That way if there is any major damage families are only liable for the $100 deductible. Any damage caused by the user starts with the $100 deductible.
Responsibility
- Keep the computer in a safe clean place
- Notify SLA if the user changes residence at any point during the time they possess the laptop
- Provide SLA and Officer Byrd with a police report in the event of fire or theft of the laptop
- Keep the laptop in a PADDED backpack
Administration of Computers
All users will be granted with the power to change the settings within the computer. That way updates to software can be made and peripherals can be hooked up to the laptop with ease. The user may not change password settings or computer name settings, these are uniform to the school and are necessary for the maintenance and upkeep of the laptop.
File Storage
No personal files should be kept on the laptop, these must be saved to an external drive - this includes all music files and photographs, SLA is not responsible for any lost files school or personal
A two gigabyte storage space will be provided for students to keep all school related files safe - ALL FILES MUST BE SAVED TO THE DROPBOX ACCOUNT - further instruction on doing so will be given in the technology course during the first week of school
Students are responsible for maintaining current backups of all their own schoolwork either online through Dropbox or their own backup solution. You will be expected to turn in your work on time even in the event that your laptop fails - the Technology Team team cannot recover your files
Network - Connecting to the Internet
The entire school is covered by a high-speed wireless internet network. All students will be able to access the internet, as long as they follow this policy. With this connection comes a degree of risk, this policy is made to help users avoid these risks, keep our community safe and abide by internet laws.
Users will have access to an email account the four years they are at SLA. You may use this to communicate with parents, teachers, friends, experts and fellow students around the globe. An email address with the suffix @scienceleadership.org will be provided to all students. This address is to be used for all school-related business. Your private account should be used for all other communications. Users will have access to their other email accounts during “off” times during school, like lunch and free periods.
Email/Chatting Etiquette
Communicating online is is very much like communicating with people in person. You must be respectful of others at all times. Remember that all email & M.O.O.D.L.E. messages can be read by the SLA Technology Team and the administration. Donʼt write anything you would not want to share with teachers and parents.
While many members of SLA, including staff members, use instant messaging and blogging software to communicate, part of the learning experience at SLA is to responsibly use these types of communication methods as part of your school day. Students need to be aware that chatting during class time when off topic is a distraction. Students asked to refrain from using or quit using chatting during class time must do so immediately.
Publishing or Uploading to the Web
In some cases your classwork will be published or students will be asked to hand in assignments that are published. Having work published means the world can see what you have uploaded. This is a great opportunity for students as well as people not directly involved with SLA; it provides you and other students a chance to share your work and have it viewed. People curious about SLA will be visiting our web portal to see what goes on daily.
Support
The SLA Technology Office is located in room 306, and staffed by our Systems Administrator Chris Alfano. In addition SLAʼs Technology Coordinator is Marcie T. Hull, who can be found in room 301.
Technology Office Hours for student repairs
Everyday after school the last half hour of first lunch and the first half hour of last lunch
Insurance Policy
SLA's Technology Team team will determine what type of repair a laptop is eligible for and be responsible for carrying out and administering the repair.
School District Insurance - in short
We strongly encourage the purchase of insurance available though the School District of Philadelphia for student laptop computers, the cost is $75.00.
- Damage caused by the user is not covered by insurance.
- Physical damage to the casing caused to chargers is not covered by insurance.
- Batteries are not covered by insurance
- All damage is subject to a $100.00 deductible.
F.A.Q's
What do I owe up front? The money for the insurance is due at the beginning of each school year. The deductible ($100.00) must be paid when damage occurs and the user brings the laptop in for a repair that is not covered by insurance. Users will not get the laptop back until the repair bill is paid in full. Payment plans can be set up for your convenience.
What not covered by the insurance? Batteries that can not keep a charge are not covered and chargers that have physical damage to the casing. Who pays for parts that are not covered by the insurance? In the event that a battery goes bad or the charger suffers physical damage by the user then the user or their guardian must pay in full for the parts that are broken or missing.
Who makes the decisions about what is covered under the insurance? The coverage under this policy is dictated to us by Apple. For example, Apple considers batteries and chargers to be replaceable parts, and they are therefore not covered by insurance. SLA does not have the budget to replace these items. Therefore, should there be a problem with a battery, or a problem with a charger due to physical damage, it is the studentʼs responsibility to pay for a replacement.
Weather
Weather
Weather is like the easiest subject to learn in Español. Your just basically giving a one word answer on how the weather is using hace or esta, which means it’s or it is.
Example:
rainy: hace lloviendo
snowy: está nevando
If you want to say the temperature is either good or bad you just say; mal for bad or bien for good. Some temperature is pronounce to its meaning in English or to a word that means the same
Example:
hace (bastante) frio - it’s (very) cold está (mayormente) nublado - it’s (mostly) cloudy
hace (bastante) calor - it’s (very) hot está (mayormente) húmedo - it’s (mostly) humid
hace (bastante) sol - it’s (very) sunny está (mayormente) lloviendo - it’s (mostly)
rainy
hace (bastante) viento - it’s (very) windy está (mayormente) nevando - it’s (mostly)
snowy
Weather:
For this video to teach the weather, we’re going to do a fake weather forecast. First the two girls are going to turn on the television to the weather channel and the anchor is going to tell them how the weather is in Spanish .

Months and Dates
Dates
Numbers in Spanish are also very different from English. The first letter in the word
also start with lower case. In Spanish the date comes before the month as in English the month comes before the date, but the year still goes last.
Example:
English: Spanish:
6/12/09 12/6/09
Dates are very important if you want to know when your homework is due, when somebody birthday is and when something expires.
Months
Months and Dates are very different from each other in Spanish and English . In Spanish the first letter of a word is lower case while in English it’s upper case
Spanish Months:

abril | mayo | junio |
julio | agosto | septiembre |
octubre | noviembre | diciembre |
English Months:
