Topic Summary

Helping out the community and preparing for my future

Project Abstract

For my Inquiry Capstone Project, I wanted to combine helping my community and preparing for my future as an Electrician. I joined a trade organization called First builders and they prepare people for their future trade jobs. My project contains two components, There is a tutoring portion, where I would go every monday night for 2 hours to receive help from professional trade people who prepare us to take the final test for whichever trade we are studying for. We then apply this math to the physical part to my project. The other part to my project is the physical projects that I’ve worked on. One of these projects is a new Sanctuary for the Kingdom Restoration Ministries (KRM) church in Northeast Philadelphia. My other project I worked on was installing new lockers for my old school, John Story Jenks Academy for the Arts and Sciences located on Germantown Avenue in Chestnut hill. I learned many things during construction process such as, Safety precautions, the Application process for the actual apprenticeship program, the math that is involved, and how to properly use tools.

1.  "40 Construction Tools List with Images for Building Construction." The Constructor. December 03, 2017. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://theconstructor.org/construction/construction-tools-list-images-building/20238/.

This source provides information about the tools that might be used when doing construction. Without tools, you won’t be able to work on the project that you are trying to complete. While having tools is important, you need to know how to use them and when you go into the apprentice program, they will teach you how to use certain tools and when to use them. Having tools with you really come in handy because you feel like you can fix anything with them. Tools relate to my Capstone because I need them when making the Sanctuary.

           2. "Acute Silicosis - Occupational Safety and Health ..." Accessed January 25, 2019.   https://www.osha.gov/OshDoc/data_General_Facts/crystalline-factsheet.pdf.

This source provides information about the importance of fall protection. Fall protection is one the most important things make sure that you have before working on the project that you are working on. Fall protection falls under the OSHA category. It includes things like Guardrails and the different parts like the toeboard, mid rail, and top rail. Using a  Harness can also prevent a fall. This relates to my capstone because It requires to know a lot about fall protection. You need to know how to apply fall protection equipment to you because it can save you from severe injuries and death.

3. DIY Network. "Everything You Need to Know About Walls." DIY. March 26, 2015.   Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/rooms-and-spaces/walls-and-ceilings/everything-you-need-to-know-about-walls.

This source provides information about how to build walls for houses or any other building. I chose this source because it should help me know what to do before I go and start to work on the sanctuary and I won’t have to ask my mentors so many questions. This source talks a lot about the different ways a house can be built saying that they can be built out of wood, Steel, and concrete. It talks about how steel and Concrete are used everywhere but wood is the material that is the most common to use. The walls for the sanctuary that I am working on will be made out of steel.

4. "How To Join The IBEW Apprenticeship Program." Electrician Apprentice HQ. January 04, 2019. Accessed January 24, 2019. https://electricianapprenticehq.com/how-to-join-ibew-apprenticeship/.

This source provides information about how to do a proper interview. Before I can

get into the First builders Pre-apprenticeship program, I need to be interviewed by the mentors that run the program.  I found out about this source from one of my advisors and she sent me this link to help me prepare for my interview with the program. It is a really reliable source that gives you good advice about what to do and what not to do during the interview. It starts out by talking about what the program is and how you can have a successful interview.

           5. https://www.osha.gov/OshDoc/data_General_Facts/federal-employee- factsheet.html

I found this source useful because It explains the OSHA organization very fluently. It explains the rights of federal workers, How agencies protect employees, and policies when working. It talks about identifying and eliminating work hazards. Some rights that are stated in this source is that workers can Report and request inspections of unsafe or unhealthful working conditions to federal officials, including the Secretary of Labor, Participate in their agency's health and safety program and related activities on official time, Access their agency's safety and health information, including data on hazardous substances in the workplace, Comment on proposed agency standards that differ from OSHA standards, Obtain copies of medical and exposure records and many more rights.

6. "The Importance of Personal Protective Equipment." Results Staffing. December 29, 2015. Accessed January 25, 2019. http://results-staffing.com/index.php/importance-personal-protective-equipment/.

This source provides information about the importance of safety equipment. The union refers to this as Personal protection equipment (PPE). When working, It is important to wear safety equipment at all times to avoid injuries. This is another source that relates to OSHA training that they give us in our program. It talks about the different types of equipment like headgear, eye and face protection, hand and skin protection, hearing protection, and respiratory protection. This relates to my capstone project because it is mandatory to have equipment on at all times on a worksite and it is important to know how to apply them all.

7.  Quinn, Bridget. "Preparing for the Aptitude Test and the Interview." NIETC. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.nietc.org/preparing-for-aptitude-interview.html.

This source provides information about the Aptitude test and how to prepare for it. The source includes youtube videos explaining how to prepare for it. The Aptitude test is the first step to becoming a tradesperson and you need to pass that in order to become an apprentice so you can start getting hands on experience with your trade. It talks about what is going to be on the test. This source relates to my capstone because It talks about the math portion to my capstone

8. WikiHow. "How to Erect Scaffolding." WikiHow. November 17, 2018. Accessed January 25, 2019. https://www.wikihow.com/Erect-Scaffolding.

I found this source useful because It explains how to assemble a scaffold. A scaffold is An elevated temporary work platform that workers use when working on a project. Scaffolds are great when working at extreme heights like ceilings and roofs. They fall under the OSHA category as well.

9. "Working at Height." Health Services - Safe Use of Bed Rails. Accessed January 25, 2019. http://www.hse.gov.uk/toolbox/height.htm.

I found this source useful because It explains how to remain safe when working at extreme heights. Heights can be an intimidating thing and most people are scared of them. This source tells you all about the Do’s and Don’ts when working at heights. It is unsafe to work at these heights without any fall protection. Fall protection is required for a worker that is working higher than 6 feet. It gives advice about situations where it is not safe to work. It talks about the law that is for working at heights which are called “Work at Height Regulations 2005.” The purpose of this law is to prevent death and injury from heights. This source relates to my capstone because while we build the walls for the room, we work at high heights.

10. How to apply to IBEW Local 98. (n.d.). Retrieved from http://www.atei98.org/local/home/pages/application.php

This source provides all of the information that I need for the Electricians Apprenticeship program that I am applying for. It tells me all the requirements that i need to be eligible to take the test and to be apart of the program. It tells us where to apply and how to apply for the program. This Website talks about the Safety requirements, The Application, The apprenticeship Model, etc. It also provides information about what the program consist of so people can decide if this is what they really want to do because the trade business is hard and not for everyone.

Image result for flattened bike tire

I remember the time we tried riding down Rat Road. It was a hot summer day in 2017. I was with my two friend’s Billy Bob and Jake. We were riding our bikes throughout the neighborhood. Billy rode his aunt’s bike since his bike’s tires were flattened by a sharp nail a few months before. We were doing tricks and daring each other to do stunts. But one dare proved to have been to extreme for us.

“Come on Billy we’re going to Rat road.” Jake said.

“Rat road? Doesn’t that street have a bunch of shattered glass on the ground?” I asked

“Yeah, the reason why there is a bunch of glass on the ground is because there was a car accident there like last week.” Jake responded

I remember saying, “I don’t think that we should go there, if cars can’t go down that street, bikes shouldn’t either.”

“We’ll be fine, I’ll go down the street first” I said.

Rat Road was a really steep hill, cars were banned from going down because it was a safety hazard. Still, I  went down first, he was moving fast but he got to the bottom safely. Jake went next. He wasn’t going as fast as I was but he was still going fast enough for it to be dangerous falling off your bike here would be very bad. But he also got to the end in one piece. Next, Billy Bob went down the hill. I remember seeing him shaking in fear. He said that he wasn’t really afraid of falling because he had on a helmet, elbow guards, and knee guards. But he was more afraid of breaking my aunt’s bike. He stood at the top of the hill for what seemed like five minutes and thought over if he should do this. If he backed out, then we would’ve thought that he wasn’t “man enough.” But if he did go down the hill, He’d have the high risk of destroying his aunt’s bike. He finally decided to go down the hill. He sped down even faster than I did. While he rode down the hill, I heard and seen his tire pop. I looked down and saw there were many shards of glass inside the tire, and he lost control.  The bike and flew off but luckily for him he didn’t have any severe injuries.

Author's Note:

This story is based off of a true story that I experienced. Billy Bob represents me as I was afraid to ride down the hill with my aunt’s that wasn’t called Rat road but that was the nickname we gave it. In reality, it was a steep hill but cars weren’t banned from going up and down the hill they just chose not to. For this story, I chose to use the style of Margaret Atwood as she uses repetition to make the story more believable. I also used some of Ken Kesey’s method by making the story very descriptive so the reader can feel what the Protagonist is feeling.

                                    Technology: The world’s ruler

Technology has been around since the late 1950s. It can be things such as Computers, Tablets, or smartphones. Technology is something that everyone uses everyday. It basically runs today’s society. People use Technology for their job, school, or just for their entertainment. It’s been known as the world’s venom to not just adults, but to teenagers as well. Technology can have a negative effect on a person’s life.

Social media is a possible reason why Technology can have a negative effect on a person’s life, Specifically a teenagers. Teens are the main group of people that use social media. People  usually download social media apps on their smartphones such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter. Parents believe that social media is toxic to their child’s brain. People think that social media can affect their child’s development into adulthood. Technology can affect the child’s education due to lack of sleep. Technology is what encourages a teen to stay awake for a long time. This causes them to be tired during school and keeps them from performing to the best of their abilities.

Social media is not just physically harmful but mentally harmful as well. Cyberbullying is a major issue that affects people mentally. Cyberbullying is bullying but it is done through Technology. Cyberbullying can happen to anyone, but when people think of the word Cyberbullying, people automatically assume that it means a teen is getting bullied online. But it can happen to adults too. Some examples of Cyberbullying is someone posting something embarrassing about another person like a video of that person being physically bullied or someone posting personal information on social media without the person’s consent. Bullies tend to do this to ruin someone’s social life and real world life. Unfortunately, this can lead to depression and can ultimately lead to suicide. Suicide is a big issue among teens in the United states. According to the Megan Meier Foundation, Approximately 34% of the students report experiencing cyberbullying during their lifetime and About 15% of the students admitted to cyberbullying another student in their lifetime.

Social media can cause lack of privacy. This makes Social media a little too Social. An example of a social media app that can become a lack of privacy is Facebook. Facebook is the most open social media app. This means that anyone can go on a person’s Facebook page without them even knowing. The person can also message the person by texting them through the direct message feature called Facebook messenger. Unlike Instagram and Snapchat, Facebook doesn’t have the feature to prevent someone from going onto the person’s page without the person’s consent.

When People stop and think about it, they realize that social media can have a negative effect on a person’s life both Physically and mentally. Social media can be an unsafe place to share your information. Some people share their location on Social media which can be very dangerous.

                                            About The Shrew

“Comparing The Taming of the shrew” to “About Last night”

The Taming of the shrew is a play written by William Shakespeare. The play is about a Man named Baptista who wants his two daughters Katherine and Bianca to be married. Petruchio is one of the Male protagonist that is looking for a  wealthy woman. Petruchio and his friend Hortensio talk about marrying Petruchio potentially marrying Katherine. About Last night is a romantic comedy film made in 2014. It follows two Characters named Bernie Litko and Danny Martin. The two fall in love with two different women. Bernie is already in a relationship with a women named Joan and Danny falls in love with Joan’s friend Debbie in a bar. But before the two women arrive to the bar, Danny and Bernie begin to talk about women. In both the movie and the play, men talk about women when the women are not around. This reflects the ongoing expectation from audiences that men use women for their own needs.

“For I will board her, though she chide as loud

As thunder when the clouds in autumn crack.”

(Act 2, Scene i, 96-97)

This quote was said by Petruchio when he was talking to Hortensio again about Katherine. Petruchio begins to tell Hortensio about his plan on how he will approach Katherine.

In this screenshot, Bernie and Danny are at work and they are talking about how Danny can ask Debbie out on a date. Bernie’s idea was that he should take her back to Danny’s place to chill. But Danny thinks of a better plan and tells Bernie that he will take her out to a restaurant. This scene relates to when Petruchio explains his plan as to Hortensio as to how he will approach Katherine.

"Petruchio, shall I then come roundly to thee  And wish thee to a shrewd ill-favour'd wife? Thou'dst thank me but a little for my counsel, And yet I'll promise thee she shall be rich, And very rich; but th'art too much my friend, And I'll not wish thee to her."

(Act I, Scene ii, 60-65)

This quote was said by Hortensio to Petruchio when the two men were having a conversation about Katherine. Hortensio tells Petruchio that he knows a rich woman named Katherine. But he was joking about introducing Petruchio to Katherine but Petruchio was interested in meeting Katherine after he heard Hortensio say that she was rich. This moment shows that Petruchio only wants to be with Katherine because of her wealth. Analyzing This quote, It shows the reader that men construct a plan before they actually talk to the women. This is an example of how men talk about approaching women in today’s society.

In this Screenshot, The audience can see that this scene takes place in a bar. Bernie and Danny talk about women before Joan and Debbie arrive to the bar. They talk about women in a sexual way and not their personality. Bernie is sitting next to his girlfriend Joan. His friend Danny is sitting across the table next to Joan’s friend Debbie. Joan begins to introduce Debbie to both Bernie and Danny. Then Bernie introduces Danny to Debbie by saying “This is Danny Martin.” This relates to Hortensio introducing Petruchio to Katherine.

"I know her father, though I know not her; And he knew my deceased father well. I will not sleep, Hortensio, till I see her; And therefore let me be thus bold with you to give you over at this first encounter,

Unless you will accompany me thither."

(Act I, Scene ii 102-7)

This quote was said by Petruchio to Hortensio during their conversation about Katherine. Petruchio is saying that he heard of Baptista but he hasn’t heard of Katherine. Then he says that he desperately wants to see her but not because he wants her for her personality but for her money. When reading this quote, The reader can tell that Petruchio is only interested in marrying Katherine for his own benefits.

In this Screenshot, Bernie and Danny are having another conversation about women. But this time they are both in a relationship. Danny and Debbie’s relationship appears to be fine but Bernie’s relationship is falling apart. Bernie says he’s only dating Joan for his own sexual needs. This relates to why Petruchio wants to marry Katherine. Petruchio only wanted to marry Katherine for his own financial benefits.

The Taming of the Shrew and About Last night have many similarities even though they are from two different time eras. The male ideas on dating in The Taming of the Shrew are the same ideas in modern society. Men talk about women when they aren’t around and this happens in both The Taming of the Shrew and About Last night.

Feminist Film review- Justin Stewart

Posted by Justin Stewart in Intersectional Feminism · Menasion · e1 Band on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 2:15 pm

Films go through different types of test to see what content is included in the film. The two test that I will be analyzing is the Bechdel test and Mako Mori test. The Bechdel Test is a test that portrays women in a way that is sexist or characterized by gender stereotyping. The Mako Mori test is a media test that analyzes a film to see If they have at least one female character that gets her own Narrative and does not support a man’s story. The two films that I will be analyzing are Frozen and The Hunger games.

Image result for the hunger games

The First Film that I will be analyzing is “The Hunger Games.” The Hunger Games is a film that released on March 23, 2012. This Movie follows a female main character named Katniss Everdeen. This movie takes place in the capital of Panem. The movie is about a survival game that has 12 districts and two teenagers are selected from each district. All the citizens have to watch as the teens fight until only one remains. Katniss has little to rely on other than her hunting skills and sharp instincts in an arena where she must weigh survival against love. This movie fails the Bechdel test because it doesn’t really portray women in a sexual way. It does pass the Mako Mori test because It has a female main character that doesn’t support a man’s story.

Image result for Frozen

The next film that I will be talking about is Frozen. Frozen is an animated film that was created in 2013. The story follows two sisters named Anna and Elsa. Anna must find her sister Elsa because she stormed out of a party. While Anna was searching for her sister, she comes across a Snowman named Olaf and a man named Kristoff. They decide to work together to try and find Elsa. This Movie Fails the Bechdel test because it doesn’t portray women in a sexual way. But it does pass the Mako Mori test because It has a female main character that doesn’t support a man’s story.

The name of my test is called the Love denial test. In order to pass this test, there has to be a female that’s the main protagonist and that female must not fall in love with a male. The hunger games and Frozen both fail this test. The Hunger games fails this test because Katniss is the Female main protagonist in her film, but she falls in love with a guy named Peeta. Frozen passes the test because Anna is the Female main protagonist in her film, but she falls in love with a guy named Kristoff.

Best Personal Essay ever- My Struggle with Anxiety

Posted by Justin Stewart in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Friday, January 5, 2018 at 1:18 pm

I’m Justin Stewart, a junior that attends Science Leadership Academy. During the first quarter of my junior year at SLA, my class and I would take vocab quizzes every other week.  It sounded easy to most people but was it really easy? For me, it was a struggle because of the anxiety that I have. Anxiety is a mental health disorder characterized by feelings of worry, anxiety, or fear that are strong enough to interfere with someone's daily activities. My anxiety first started in fourth grade. We had to do group presentations about what we found while researching how light bulbs worked. It was my groups turn to go up and that’s when my anxiety kicked in for the first time. “Justin lets go” my friend said as I continued to stare at everyone in the classroom. At that moment, I came up with an Idea. I decided to pretend that I was sick and ask to go to the nurse. Surprisingly It worked and my teacher let me go to the nurse.

Before every vocab quiz, we had to write down the words that she posted on canvas in the back of our notebooks. Then we had to find the definition and write a sentence for the word.

On the very first vocab quiz, I was feeling confident because I spent that whole week studying. I thought that I was going to pass it by getting a 10 out of 10,but I was wrong. As my teacher, Ms. Pahomov, wrote the words on the board, I felt really nervous and was afraid to take the test. There were some words that weren’t coming back to me. “You may begin” Ms Pahomov said. I spent the first 20 minutes just staring at the paper. I couldn’t believe that I forgot the words so quickly and so easily. After about 20 minutes, I began to try my best. I started with the words that I remembered then tried to figure out the ones that I had forgotten. Before I had known, time was up. “Put your test in the middle of the table” Ms Pahomov said. As I put my test in the middle of the test, I realized I did it with fear in my eyes. I knew that I didn’t do too well on the test. We then were asked to grade our classmates papers as well, and as we started to grade each other’s quizzes,  I zoned out. I couldn’t focus on grading the test that I had. All I could focus on was who graded my test and what they would think of me.

The next day, I went on canvas to see if she graded the quizzes and she did. I got a 5 out of 10. I did better than I thought I was going to do, but it still brought my grade down. “How can I bring my grade up?” I thought to myself. I then thought about the 2fer essays that she assigns us every week, the weeks that we don’t have vocab quizzes. The 2fers could be about anything as long as they weren’t in first person. I took these essays as opportunities to bring my grade up. Completing  one of the 2fer essays, and I got an 18 out of 25. It wasn’t too bad, but I knew I could do better.

The week after the 2fer, we had another vocab quiz assigned and my anxiety immediately kicked in. But this time I wasn’t scared, I was just nervous. I wasn’t afraid to take this test because I knew some of the words already. So I was even more confident than before,ut I slacked the whole week and didn’t study a lot. When I walked into the room, all I could hope for was the words that I knew were on the quiz so I could at least get some credit on the quiz. When Ms. Pahomov wrote the words on the board, none of the words that I knew before the test were on there. At that moment, every last bit of nervousness crawled back into my body. My hands started to sweat and my heart started to beat really fast. “You may begin.” Ms. Pahomov.” It felt like deja vu all over again. I couldn’t believe that I was getting nervous again. While I was taking the test, the words were coming back to me, or I thought.

The next day I went on Canvas again to see what I got this time. This time I was even more nervous and scared to look at my grade than before. I haven’t seen my grade yet, but I already knew that I did worse than the first quiz. I got a 4 out of 10 and my grade dropped again but not as much as I thought it would. I then thought of the same method I used last time. I then started thinking about my next 2fer topic. I worked even harder than I did on my first 2fer and I did slightly better than I did last time. I got a 19 out of 25. It was better than last time, but once again, I knew I could do better. I had no anxiety when it came to writing the 2fers. I began relying on them to bring my grade up.

The week after our second 2fer was the week for our third vocab quiz. When Ms. Pahomov revealed the words in class, I felt even more confident than the first two vocab quizzes. I felt like the words were easier to remember.  I spent that whole week studying and this time I made flash cards to help me remember,ut they still didn’t help. By the time I got to the classroom, I forgot some of the words. Now my anxiety was even more intense than last time. “You may begin” Ms Pahomov said. As usual, I started out with the words I knew.  That brought my confidence up. But then the words I forgot took my confidence away. I felt like it was happening all over again. Me being somewhat confident in myself, only to get let down in the end. I was tired of it. By the end of class, I was so depressed that I didn’t want to talk to anyone. I went straight to advisory and sat down.

What I learned from this experience is that quizzes are not my strong point.  No matter how much I prepare for them, they will always be a struggle for me because of my anxiety. My anxiety has been going on since fourth grade and I still don’t know how to overcome it. It would prevent me from being comfortable with talking to some of my classmates and doing presentations in front of them. Over the years my anxiety settled down a lot. But it’s not fully gone. When I first started school in Kindergarten, I didn’t talk to anyone because I was afraid to. But now here I am in 11th grade and I am more comfortable when I am talking to people.

Seneca Convention- Justin Stewart

Posted by Justin Stewart in Intersectional Feminism · Menasion · e1 Band on Tuesday, December 19, 2017 at 9:15 pm

The Seneca Convention was the first ever women’s rights convention ever held in the United States with almost 300 women participating in it.The Convention took place in Seneca Falls, New York on July 19–20, 1848. It was organized by two abolitionists who met at the 1840 World Anti-Slavery Convention in London named Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. They were Barred from the convention floor because they were women. This Convention advertised itself as “a convention to discuss the social, civil, and religious condition and rights of woman.” On the second day of the convention, men were invited to attend the convention and about 40 men did, including Frederick Douglass. The Declaration of Sentiments and Grievances was adopted and signed by the assembly. The convention passed 12 resolutions which called for equal rights for women. The Seneca Falls Convention was followed two weeks later by an even larger meeting in Rochester, N.Y. The national woman’s rights conventions were held annually, focusing on the growth for the women’s suffrage movement. After the many years of struggling, the 19th Amendment was adopted in 1920, granting American women the constitutionally protected right to vote. The Convention wanted to have equal rights for women and they got what they wanted. The Convention accomplished the signing of the The Declaration of Sentiments, a document that outlined the rights of women.

2 fer #2 Revision- Justin Stewart

Posted by Justin Stewart in English 3 · Pahomov · A Band on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 2:06 pm

Children have either a Positive or negative affect from playing video games. The Children think that it has a positive effect on their development. But their parents might think that Video games have a negative effect on the Child’s development. Parents Believe that video games are bad for children and think that it damages their brain. People believe that Video games help develop a kid’s personality in a positive way.

The rating that parents hate the most are the mature rated games, because of the content. The content that these video games have are things that kids shouldn’t be experiencing such as gun violence, or blood. But teenagers think that the mature rated games are the best games. They think this because it is interesting to them. Violent video games that include profanity, blood, and gun violence are what kids are into these days.

The Positive effects of playing video games is that it gives their brain a workout.  In many video games, the skills required to win involve high level thinking. These skills are not even taught at school. The video games help improve a child’s hand-eye coordination.  “In shooting games, the character may be running rand shooting at the same time.” This quote is said by Daphne Bavalier, a Cognitive researcher. This requires the player to keep track of the position of the character, where they are going to, the character’s speed, where the gun is aiming, and  if the bullets are hitting the enemy. The player has to keep track of all of these things. This process requires a great deal of hand-eye coordination. As a result children can gain these skills while playing a violent video game.

The negative effect to playing video games are not in all games. Violence in the video games are the main reasons why parents think that video games are bad. According to Daphne Bavalier], Children who play more violent video games are more likely to have increased aggressive thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This is not true for all children who play violent video games. But they can cause children to have bad behavior.

When asked, Parents might say that Video games are bad for their child’s health. But on closer inspection, video games actually influence their perspective on the world. Although Video games may only seem important to Children that play video games, it should in fact concern anyone who cares about their development.

LOTF- Pridefulness by Justin Stewart

Posted by Justin Stewart in English 2 · Pahomov · C Band on Friday, March 31, 2017 at 9:18 am

Lord of the Flies was written by William Golding in 1954. This book is about a group of boys that are caught in a plane crash with no parent supervision so have to learn how to survive by themselves. Ralph and Piggy, two of the boys that were in the plane crash, find a conch shell on the beach. This dire situation could  and does happen in real life- news stories about plane crashes are not uncommon. People lie about having fears as a way to maintain their pride

In the military, one has to be brave and unafraid of any situation that could arise. But there are some members in the military that are afraid but don’t want other people to know. In the Army, they also value pride. One of their core values are personal courage. It says “Face fear, danger or adversity (physical or moral)”. This is a sign of pride. Pride is satisfaction derived from someone's own achievements. Pride is necessary in order to do anything and motivate yourself. People in the military motivate themselves with pride by defending our country.  We humans would rather have pride over being realistic, effective, and compassionate. The consequences of being realistic, effective, and compassionate are that they don’t want people to know that fear is controlling them.

A time that pride is showed in the book was when the group first encountered the beast. The boys all meet up and talk about the beast in chapter 5, where Piggy exclaims, ”I didn’t vote for no ghost!” (91). This occurs after Ralph asks the group if they think the beast is a ghost. When Piggy responds by saying that there isn’t a ghost, he says it like he isn’t afraid of the beast even though he is on the inside.

Pridefulness can also be present when one gives a presentation. When you present a project, one must have to be proud in what you created. This pride in one’s own work helps protect the feelings of the presenter as this confidence will prevent criticism for others. If you aren’t proud with what you created, then people will start to doubt you and that can lower your pride and self-esteem. When you present a project, you can’t let people know that you are afraid to present because that will destroy your pride. Pride can be a defense mechanism.

Another sign of pride that is present in this book is when the boys are struggling to accept their current leader. Jack offers his position, saying, “I’m not going to be apart of Ralph’s lot” (128).  Jack said this to Ralph to try to lower his pride and self-esteem in order to weaken Ralph’s hold on the group. By lowering Ralph’s pride, he is asserting himself as a stronger, less fearful, and more prideful option for leading the group.

In Conclusion, it is a sign of pride if you are pretending not to be scared even if you truly are. This stubborn and often irrational human behavior can aid people in functioning properly, but lying about fears can also be a person’s greatest weakness.

E2 U4 Proyecto- Justin Stewart

Posted by Justin Stewart in Spanish 2 · Hernandez · A Band on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 9:16 am

Vivo en el lado noroeste de Filadelfia. Es bien conocido como Mt. Airy.

Yo soy humano

Mi familia y yo todos somos

Yo no soy inmigrante

Yo soy de Filadelfia

Mi familia es de Africa

Pero no somos inmigrantes

Veo la Africa

Saboreo tierra en Mi boca

Oigo el gritar por la noche noche

Huelo la muerte

Toco preocupado

Mi abuela es de la tierra de bisonte

Mi abuelo es de la tierra de mar

Mi mamá es de la tierra de arból

Mi papá es de la tierra de no dinero

Somos productos de América

Somos Americanos

Hablamos inglés

No somos inmigrantes. Vivimos en América

No somos inmigrantes.

Mi mama y yo estamos en América

Banquo Murder Scene!- Justin Stewart and Ashton Reigner

Posted by Justin Stewart in English 1 - Giknis - X on Monday, January 18, 2016 at 10:06 am
                                                                                Rationale

How the video came to life!

For our project, Ashton and I chose to do a Video Scene Depiction. We reenacted the scene, The Murder of Banquo. This scene takes place on Act 3 scene 4. We had to recreate the scene in our own words by using the language of Macbeth. We chose to pursue this scene because it is one of the most action packed scenes in the play and we thought it would be interesting to act this scene out. We start the scene with the three murderers, Ashton, Brendon, and, Leo. They were sent by Macbeth, Zaire, to Kill Banquo, Justin, and Fleance, Raymond. The third murder approaches the two original murders. He explains that Macbeth has sent him to help them with the deed. Suddenly, One of the murderers notices Banquo and Fleance approaching them. The murderers confronts Banquo and Fleance for a show down! But the numbers were too much for Banquo that lead to his downfall and Fleance escapes.

  Original idea

When we first decided to do this project, we wanted to design a board game for the whole class to play. We didn’t have any ideas for the objective of the game. This was our initial plan but it went downhill. We then decided to do an even more interesting project for the both of us. This is when we decided to do a Video Scene Depiction. Ashton suggested to do the murder scene of Banquo. Then we both agreed to pursue that scene. But there was some obstacles  we needed to overcome. First we had to redo our Check point #1 since we changed our idea. After we did that, We also had to find extra support. So we asked our friends to make appearances in it as well. Now that we had our actors and our scene, We also needed to design a script. After we designed the script it was time to create the film!

Supporters

For our video, We had supporters to play some extra roles. I would recommend giving them extra credit for being supportive to other students. They were willing to take time out of their own project schedule to be supportive to their fellow classmates. The names of these supporters are Raymond, Brendon, Leo, and Zaire. We all agreed to help each other prepare each other’s projects. We all wanted to take time out of our own project to help each other.  I personally believe that every one of these supporters should receive extra credit because of their encouragement, Commitment, and, Leadership.

Conclusion

In conclusion, We enjoyed doing this project and we hope you will prepare another project in the future. For the next book we will be reading, We should have different options such as writing our own version of the book or creating a continuation of the book. If we do get another creative project, I would recommend giving us the same amount of time as you did for this project. I would also recommend putting us in groups of four just in case it is a major project. I enjoyed doing this project because, it helped show the teamwork of the project.

U2 #8 Reflection- Justin Stewart

Posted by Justin Stewart in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at 11:36 am

In Tech class, We watched a video based on the danger of the internet. In my opinion, the most memorable event that happened in the film was when Ryan committed suicide. This was memorable because, it goes back to our Cyberbullying session a few weeks ago.

It is important for us teens to watch this film because, it shows us what could happen to both our online and personal life. It shows that we could be talking to older men/women when their profile picture is a picture of a 14 years old girl.

I would keep my future family safe by making strict rules for online uses. The reason why you should have a talk with your family is because you need to tell them the dangers when they’re online. I would encourage other parents to get the password to their kid’s devices to search for things that shouldn’t be happening.

Me slide#2 and Reflection

Posted by Justin Stewart in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at 9:12 am

I learned that my slide wasn't really creative enough. I wanted it to be eye catching to the viewer. I didn't want viewers to read a bunch of information. I made these changes to my slide because, I included so many pictures and it would probably hurt the human eye because there is so much going on.

Me Slide- Justin Stewart

Posted by Justin Stewart in Technology - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Monday, November 23, 2015 at 9:30 am

My slide is based off of many hobbies that i enjoy doing. Each picture defines me in different ways. The hobbies that interest me the most are the bigger pictures. Notice how the sports picture is in the background because, that is my favorite hobby. As for hobbies like Robotics and music are smaller because, they have a minimum in my interest. I still enjoy doing the two hobbies but I´m not as interested in them like sports.
