Gun Violence

Posted by Sierra Radford in English 3 · Block/Harmon · B Band on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 at 11:34 pm

Gun Violence

When you hear guns or gun violence what do you think of? The most common thought is gangsters, selling drugs and sometimes police brutality but this is not what is mainly being recorded or mentioned in statistics.

Gun violence is any violence taking place using a gun or any firearm which includes non-powder guns such as BB, air and pellet guns. There are many types of gun violence. These actions include homicide, suicide, suicide attempts, unintentional homicide, unintentionally shooting and police intervention. Guns should only be used under special permission such as if you are being stalked and you file a police report for this issue, then if you feel like it you should be loaned a gun under state laws and if the loaned firearm is used in any way other than what it is for than there should be consequences.

Too many innocent people are be harmed by the weapons whether intentionally or unintentionally. According to everytownresearch.org,”93 Americans are killed with guns on an average day and for every one person killed two more are injured.” Although our population in America is massive (321.4 million as of 2015 to be exact), there is still way too many people dying.  “Out of the 169,395 firearm deaths 62% of firearm deaths are suicides.” Imagine how many more there would be if the undocumented suicides were documented. This is just one more reason why guns shouldn’t be kept lying around in the house. Especially if you have children in the house. According to bradycampaign.org, “7 children and teens die from gun violence. 4 are murdered and 2 kill themselves on an average of every day.” This statistic is based around persons from ages 19 and younger. To just have guns stashed around the house is just not safe when having kids and teens in the house with it. It gives them accessibility to it. According to smartgunlaws.org, “Guns kept in the home are more likely to be involved in fatal or nonfatal unintentional shooting, criminal assault or suicide attempt than to be used to injure or kill in self-defence.” That means these gun assumably permitted, have some part of these stats whether it's for suicide or unintentional shooting. Reducing the amount of self-defence guns in homes will also reduce these stat numbers that are outrageously high. The picture cited from americanprogress.org below shows a graph from 1999 to 2019 of the total of deaths.

from guns relating to the total of deaths from vehicles. The number of deaths from guns are increasing while the death from vehicle are decreasing. Society needs to release that these firearms are hurting the future of this country and if the number don’t go 6 feet under then we do and there will be no future.

“Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.” Key Gun Violence Statistics* | Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, 2016, www.bradycampaign.org/key-gun-violence-statistics.  Accessed 3 May. 2019.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence speaks about how many people are shot in murders, assaults, suicides and  suicide attempts, unintentional shootings, and police intervention. Some of these actions leads to death. Forty children and teens survive from gunshot wounds. These same guns kill seven children and teens everyday and out of these seven, four are murdered and two kill themselves. 17,383 American teens and children varying from 0 years old to 19 are shot in one year on average.

These numbers that are just based on children is just outrageous. No one let alone children should be affected this much in only one year. These numbers need to be lowered. This information connects to my project because these stats on children will help people see that gun violence is a very big issue in our society and we need to do something about it now. They will see that the future of this country is being highly affect and there needs to be an end put to this because without them there is no future.

"Gun Violence Statistics." Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. N.p., n.d. Web. 4 May 2019. <http://smartgunlaws.org/category/gun-studies-statistics/gun-violence-statistics/>.

Smartgunlaws.org talks about how innocent people are harmed more than intruders using self owned guns kept in the house for self-defense. These guns are sometime used for suicides and often are pulled on innocent people.  When guns are being used for self-defence purposes, it highers the chance of being harmed than not owning a self-defence gun. $229 billion are going into firearm funding. People are also harmed with non-powder guns. These guns harm 9,252 people varying from 19 years old and younger.

The number of people that are harmed from the non-powder guns are really steep. There should not be this many people getting harmed from these type of guns let alone bullet guns. This connects to my project because this website describes all of its stats that relates to gun violence. This website really has easy to understand detailed explanation of their stats which make them a good source to use for my research.

Chelsea Parsons and Eugenio Weigend Vargas. "Pennsylvania Under the Gun." Center for American Progress. N.p., 16 May 2016. Web. 6 May 2019. <https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/guns-crime/reports/2016/05/16/137219/pennsylvania-under-the-gun/>.

https://www.americanprogress.org/issues/guns-crime/reports/2016/05/16/137219/pennsylvania-under-the-gun/

American Progress is a site that gives statistics on Pennsylvania and the gun violence here. This site includes cases that involves gun violence. They include different occasion of when people are killed such and police officers. This website is a good resource because it includes accurate statistics.

I used this website because it gave different incidents of gun violence and helped my understand a deeper meaning of why gun violence is so bad. I gathered information from this website and used it in my first blog post. This website provided me with the stats I needed. This site also was not biased and just provided information.

"Gun Violence by the Numbers." EverytownResearch.org. N.p., 19 Jan. 2017. Web. 4 May. 2019. <https://everytownresearch.org/gun-violence-by-the-numbers/>.

https://everytownresearch.org/gun-violence-by-the-numbers/

Everytownresearch.org gives information about how America has more than 25 times the average of gun homicide rate than high-income countries. On average 93 Americans are killed in a day by guns and for every one person kill, two more are injured. Suicides are just as high. 62% of gun deaths are suicides varying from children to adults. Race also plays apart in this research. Black men are 14 times more likely than white men to be shot and  killed with guns. To be relieved, background checks blacked nearly 3 million gun sales to prohibited people.

These rates that mostly focus on a general population are still pretty high. Both men and women and all races are affected by this. This just gives more reasons for many people to take a stance and make a change in this society. This source relates to my topic because this gives more overall stats than just focusing on a targeted group.

Advanced Essay #1: Diving In

Posted by Sierra Radford in English 3 · Block/Harmon · B Band on Monday, September 17, 2018 at 11:51 pm

Dear reader,
Throughout this reading I want you to get a feel of how emotionally involved I was in this moment of my life. Taking these actions molded me into a more optimistic, open-minded person. I am proud of the quality of my paper. I put so much effort into this, being that it is my first advanced essay. I believes it shows. One of the down sides of this essay is my process. I took me an extra day to fully complete my work to the best of my ability. I hope you enjoy.

Sincerely,
Sierra
 Diving In

Jumping off a cliff. Sounds crazy right?  How about jumping off a cliff into a river full of rocks? Even crazier? Well, it was. But sometimes you have to take that leap of faith and like a bird, hope your wings will open and catch you.
“Ready, set…”
“Wait!” I screamed in fear as I felt the blood rushing through my body.
Attempting to calm myself down, I concentrated on each and every breath.
“In and out. In and out.”
“I don’t think I can do this!”  I thought to myself as I was climbing up to the sharp, slimy boulders.
They were infested with mosquitoes larvae. There were groups of them neatly tucked into the dents of the boulders. They slipped on the puddles. The puddles on the rocks were strangely heated under my toes. It was slightly awkward to touch since I adapted to the cold water from the river.
First and foremost I thought we were just going white water rafting. I didn’t know anything about the additional stops. The water was gentle. We floated across.
“Right back, left forward!” my instructor demanded.
He spoke fairly good English. Better English than I do Spanish. I presume he gets a lot of practice with all the other North American groups that come down to do white water rafting.  I had the best instructor, I don’t remember his name but I do remember him rapping the theme song of “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” in Spanish.
“En el Oeste de Filadelfia nació y se crió en el patio de recreo es donde pasé la mayor parte de mis días…” he sang gleefully.
The water grew furious. It slammed into the raft, leaving our clothes clinging to our bodies. The water threw itself into us once more devouring one of the rowers. We quickly extracted from the water onto the raft by his gleamingly yellow life jacket.
“Left forward, right back!” my instructor asserted repeatedly with anxiety.
Rowing out of the storm, the rapids started to tranquilize once more. We steered the raft towards the land where a ginormous cliff stood tall and mighty.
“Whoever wants to jump into the water can get out of the boat now. ” my instructor announced.
Eager to do so, I sprung out of the boat along with six other people. I lifted my eyes towards the strong powerful rocks. I became paralyzed by its elegance. Inhaling the pure aroma, I attempted to climb up the rock. With the powerful ore smirking down at me, my foot slips off of it. I pushed forward with determination to defeat the rock. My impression of jumping off of the rock was the reward of conquering it, but that was the most demanding portion of the exploration. My bare feet on the sharp granite rock standing 10 feet tall above the rushing blue water slamming into the rocks on the sides.
“This is nothing!” one of the rowers howled diving off.
“Ah!” another shrieked.
“Oh no!” I cried standing still staring ten feet down to my doom.
The water burst out in laughter. Mocking my fear. I stared at it, watching it swallow each and every person that dared it.
“I can’t do this!” I thought to myself as my eyes studied the bellows of my destruction.
“You got this.” one of my tour guides José reassured.
I felt my stomach dance inside of me, my hands clammy, and my knees convulse.
“Here hold my hand.” He said offering comfort
I held my tour guides hand and pinched my nostrils with the other.
“Go!” He screamed.
And we went. My free body flowed through the air. I connected with the water. I became one with it. I felt it throughout my body. I grew limp allowing the water to appraise me. It pushed me up. It didn’t swallow me. But why not? Was it all in my imagination? How could I think the water was my nemesis? All along it was my friend. I didn’t need to fear it, I just needed to trust it. I needed a support system behind me to guide me through it. And most importantly I needed to be free. I was the bird, José was my wings, and the water caught me.

My element is silver and the atomic number is 47. Silver can be fund in antibiotics to stop the spreading of an infection. I got the idea of drawing a cream by looking up where can silver be found in everyday life. I explored with the different colors of paint doing solid color to gradients as you see in the picture above. I would use a little more paint to fill out the white spaces. I enjoyed the stamping part the most because this is where your picture really gets so character.

The Art of Printmaking

Posted by Sierra Radford in Art - Freshman · Hull · d1 Band on Monday, May 1, 2017 at 10:42 pm

Printmaking is a type of art that is made by printing, most commonly made on paper. This process was created 105 AD and originated in China. Printmaking is made by drawing out a design, carving out the negative space with a carving tool, applying ink to the drawing then lastly transfer ink to a piece of paper. There are different form of printmaking but the main four that contrast with relief printing are called intaglio, lithography, serigraphy, and mono-printing. When you cut an image into metal it is called intaglio. Lithography is based on repelling chemicals of water or oil. Monoprint is one version that cannot be copied. Serigraphy is a silk screen printing that was invented in the 20th century. Serigraphy was invented in America. Printmaking also made an appearance in Europe in the 15th century. Printmaking is revolutionary. It adopts different techniques from different countries and they all make different looks. For example Chinese printmaking are usually black and white and focuses more on gradients and American printmaking is more colorful and shadow is often applied. Printmaking is important because the various processes that are a part of making a print is through printmaking.

This piece of artwork is artistically interesting because I notice the picture is black and grey print with pops of brown. I wonder why the artist chose these colors and how the mood or the emotion shown will change by using colorful colors. What if the two men wasn’t in the background wasn’t in this print, how will it change the picture’s meaning. What if there was a gunman in the picture, how would that change the meaning.

Negative space darwing

Posted by Sierra Radford in Art - Freshman · Hull · d1 Band on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at 10:29 am

Negative space is the darker space in a picture or drawing.  Positive space is the lighter part in a picture or a drawing.

How I found the negative space in my cut out is by noticing what color is darker and which color is lighter.  Then I cut out the entire picture and put it onto another piece of construction paper.  After that I I looked back at the original picture and peeled away the lighter cutouts and glued the darker ones onto the paper.  Finally I connected the lighter cut outs to the darker ones comparing them to each other.

It helps and artist to see negative space because this allows them to know where to put what kind of lines and how to shade the drawing.

Seeing negative space does enhance a drawing because you get to see it from different point of views

La Hija de las Américas

Sierra Radford

Soy yo.

Soy yo.

Improved side

My new slide
I decided to change a lot about my slide because the background was just to complex and the words on my slide just didn't stand out like I wanted them to. The words are really the main focus of my slide. To also help the word stand out a little more I made them bold and I also changed the color of the hearts because I learned that it just didn't match. I learned that you should make your slide as clear as possible and include clear pictures that includes negative space so my slide doesn't seem to congested. Research in the beginning of a project is really important because you want to make sure that you know ever valid reason you did what you did.

Musically Talented

Posted by Sierra Radford in Technology - Freshman · Hull · d2 Band on Friday, December 2, 2016 at 1:46 pm
Untitled presentation (1)

Musically talented describes who I am. I play viola and I wanted to express that in this slide so I included that in with the title. For this slide I used the rule of contrast. The rule of contrast is when you a have an ongoing theme and then you have something a different color that is on the other side of the color wheel. For example, if I choose to have a blue background and one thing that is red. The red would stand out from the blue background which would cause a powerful statement. I choose to include this rule because it made my title stand out and it becomes very eye catching.
