Abstract

Coming from a developing country, child marriage was always something that I couldn’t fully understand. For years I’ve believed that it was appropriate and if it was not, rules and regulations should have protected it somehow. But no, I was wrong all this time. To correct myself, I started designing my capstone during the month of January in 2016. It all started from an average research project from Mr. Baird’s American History class. From there, the overall idea escalated as time went by. During April of 2016, I was chosen as one of the candidate for Internation Conference on Urban Education. This conference advanced my capstone by making me eligible to hold a seminar on the topic of child marriage and introduce other civilians to this idea that many are not aware of. After the conference, I began to do extensive research and plan out a literature review on my topic. Soon after, one of my close friend was pushed to edge to get married early without her will. Tis set me back a  little while not knowing what my next step should be. So as an advocate of child marriage, I decided to stick by her side and help with any necessities to recover from that position. So my capstone highlights the educativ site I’ve created to help others understand this issue and also write the journey of my closest friend who went through child marriage. Many things were learned through my capstone but the most important one was how helpless and vulnerable the younger generations are.

Annotated Bibliography

  1. Brides, Girls Not. "About child marriage." Girls Not Brides. Idea Bureau, n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017. <http://www.girlsnotbrides.org/about-child-marriage/>.

The website, Girls Not Brides, carries a historic explanations of child marriages and it has/is affecting both the past and the present and even maybe the future if the problem continuous. In addition to that, the website also carries bunch of statistics that can come in handy while I prove my point about child marriages. In a broader sense, this website is a building point for carrying statistics. In my opinion, I believe this website have a strong stance point on child marriages and how it will continue to affect us and the environment if this epidemic is not immediately prohibited. I wish to incorporate this in my project by pulling out interesting and informational statistics which I can easily implement in my future paper. In addition to that, I wish to draw out their hypothesis and compare with my hypothesis to draw out differences.

2. "The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006." The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. State of Himachal Pradesh, n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2017. <https://indiankanoon.org/doc/790355/>.

This website clearly portrays the act of banning child marriage in india in the year of 2006 and forward to follow. While clearly listing what counts as child marriage, it also portrays punishments one much receive from the governmental side if anyone has committed or is willing to commit the act of child marriage. In addition to that, the website also portrays the girls as reducing social power and empowering them so the ideology of child marriage can be banned. In my opinion, I believe that even though this website clearly portrays lots of good news, the society lacks the capability of capturing that information and implementing that in real life. I will be using this website as a source to inform my reader that the prohibition act for child marriages exists, but lack of consideration are being played by it.

3. Huda, Taqbir. "The Problem with the Child Marriage Act." The Problem with the Child Marriage Act | Inter Press Service. The Daily Star, Bangladesh, n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017. <http://www.ipsnews.net/2017/01/the-problem-with-the-child-marriage-act/>.

This source provides informations regarding to child marriage act and how there’s some severe problems behind the act that are unknown. In addition that that, this source provides several example behind the nonsense of child marriage act. I selected this source because it empowered the negativity behind these acts and how they are not promising by any sense. I believe that if a act have to be implemented by any means, it should have the capability to hold enough waters to ensure itself to be yourself. One limitation of this source was that it wasn’t so in depth that I was looking for, but rather gave brief explanations which can work I believe. I will be implementing this in my project on the sources section and my research part as well where I explain the downside of these acts.

4. Raphael, T.J. "The US has a forced child marriage problem, too." Public Radio International. N.p., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017. <https://www.pri.org/stories/2015-12-29/us-has-forced-child-marriage-problem-too>.

This source provides reasonable understanding of how child marriage is not  a problem in the developing countries, but in a country like U.S. as well. Many interviews and talks were collected from researchers about the child marriage and many had the same opinion; being unsure about the growth of marriage. I selected this source because it shows the uncertainty and the unknown of why child marriage is actually a problem in our society. I feel as if the uncertainty about the child marriage is not discovered soon enough, girls at U.S. will have have to face the same problematic as other third world countries girls. I found this source useful because I can potentially use this source to explain my hypothesis that there seems to be a hierarchy that is controlling these kinds of problematic situations and the average public is surely unaware about them.

5. Reiss, Fraidy. "America's Child Marriage Problem." The New York Times. Op-Ed, n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017. <https://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/14/opinion/americas-child-marriage-problem.html>.

Significantly different from other sources but with a similar concept, this source provides the reader with necessary information behind the law systems that protects child marriages in the U.S. specifically how that seems to be one of the biggest issues. I selected this source because it goes in depth behind the systematic of law and “parent consent” which gives the judge permission to conform marriages for anyone under the age of 18 in U.S. This source will be critically helpful when I explain the reason behind child marriages in the U.S. and how the parents plays a HUGE role behind this issue. One limitation of this source is the lack of example but I believe it is already strong enough with the interviews that it carries.

6. Male, Chata, and Quentin Wodon. "Basic Profile of Child Marriage in Bangladesh." Open Knowledge. The World Bank, n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017. <https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/12/11/06-0510.htm>.

This website provides couple of significantly important infographic that goes to show the percentage and the prominence of child marriages in Bangladesh. In addition to that, it also provides good useful informations about the reasons behind the marriage while highlight the poverty rate that lasts there. I selected this source because it can be useful to see the number and analyze them in my research paper. One limitation of this source might be the actual information of how these numbers were gathered but I believe this should not be the problem since it was published though CDC. I wish to use this on my project while I talk about my country, Bangladesh, in general and explain the main base which still holds child marriages up.

7. Raj, Dr. Anita. "Prevalence of Child Marriage and Its Effect on Fertility and Fertility-control Outcomes of Young Women in India: A Cross-sectional, Observational Study." Science Direct. RELX Group, n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017. <http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0140673609602464>.

The website provides information behind the issue of healthcare in child marriages. To be more in depth it specifically talks about the non fertility rate than can occur in addition to the problematic situations with abortions. Abortion rates rises as the marriage is happening at a much younger age. I selected this source because it clarifies any confusions behind the scientific path of a child marriage, abortions and fertility rates. I found this source useful because it empowers girls by inputting their health consequences while stating the medical side effect behind early marriages. There seems to be no limitation to this source since it clarifies any confusions readers might have while understanding the consequences of health issues and early marriages. I will be using this source to empower my research paper and I mostly plan to out this informations under the medical side of this paper.

8. Larsen, Dana. "DIVORCE IN ETHIOPIA: THE IMPACT OF EARLY MARRIAGE AND CHILDLESSNESS | Journal of Biosocial Science." Cambridge Core. Cambridge Press, n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017. <https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/journal-of-biosocial-science/article/div-classtitledivorce-in-ethiopia-the-impact-of-early-marriage-and-childlessnessdiv/70D971AFFDA1DB89863669873A16B050>.

The source provides useful informations regarding child marriages and the divorce rate that carries with the marriage, Which immediately brings up the topic that child marriage is not something that is sufficient or guaranteed for lifetime, but the marriage can easily break anytime. In order to stop that, many forces the couple to have a child at their early ag which immediately puts the girl in danger of harming her internal body systems and putting herself in great danger. I specifically chose this source to use in my project because it shows and aligns with my hypothesis and my beliefs. In addition that, the sites COX models analysis would come great in handy when I show my reader the downside of child marriages and how the divorce, abortions come to play with it.

9. Vikram, Patel. "Poverty and Common Mental Disorders in Developing Countries." Poverty and Common Mental Disorders in Developing Countries. World Health Organization, n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017. <http://www.scielosp.org/scielo.php?pid=S0042-96862003000800011&script=sci_arttext&tlng=es>.

This source provides tons of information about poverty, education and other necessary details regarding developing countries. It also does a well job with giving several example of scenarios where a person or a family in developing country have to go through those poverty situations. I believe that this is a strong website for my project because I can use this to show that child marriage doesn't automatically happen, but here are many different factors that are related to the marriage, and most important one is poverty. I will be also able to portray how child marriage destroys the child's education, income and future career in general since they are early at an young age which can automatically take their freedom away. I hypothesize that education is one of the biggest issue of child marriage since loads of children miss the chance of receiving a proper education and this website will help me aid that goal to portray on that paper.

10. Ravallion, Martin. "Can High-inequality Developing Countries Escape Absolute Poverty?" Can High-inequality Developing Countries Escape Absolute Poverty? Elsevier B.V., n.d. Web. 03 Feb. 2017. <http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0165176597001171>.

I selected this source because it provides the background informations that someone needs to know to understand how economic situation and poverty in developing countries actually work. This website and the article followed will be one of the main resources to which I can refer back to and understand the economic and political side behind developing countries which can aid me to better understand the development of child marriages and its roots. I found this source useful because this can eventually teach me the politics behind child marriages in developing countries especially. One limitation will be that it directly doesn’t count child marriage by any chance but it gives broad understanding of the economic positions and questions the great inequality that pay exists to create the poverty situations. I hope to implement this in my project by explaining the broad field and remove the main facades that relates to child marriages in developing countries.

Comparing "The Taming of the Shrew" to "50 First Dates"

By: Tahmidul Islam Bhuiyan

As “The Taming of the Shrew” proves, the idea of romantic love contrasting with beauty as been around for years. In “Shrew,” the bold Petruchio affirms that he will woo Katherine as his wife, no matter how many attempts he has to take. In the 2004 movie, “50 First Dates,” the main character realizes the scary secret of his love at first, but still sets himself to face rigorous journeys that he’d never chose to take at first--only to earn her.

Even though Petruchio and Henry Roth both took different routes to woo their special one’s, they both went overboard with their game plan just because of their special one’s beauty. Taming of the Shrew is a comedy written by William Shakespeare, around 1590. Petruchio and Katherine are the main characters in which most of the focuses lies upon. The main plot depicts the courtship of the convincing Petruchio and the unbearable Katherine. Petruchio is off to the city in the hope of finding himself a wealthy and beauteous wife, that’ll not only listen to him but impress everyone as well. Even though wealth was one major aspect while finding himself a bride, his romantic love at first sight with Katherine had removed the idea of wealth and was replaced with beauty. Petruchio’s romantic love at first sight with Katherine's beauty have urged him to step out of his comfort zone in the hope to win Katherine, who totally resists the proposal. Comparing this plot to the “50 First Dates,” the main character (Henry Roth) sets his heart on romancing Lucy, but soon realizes that she has a short term memory loss; she can’t remember what happened the previous day. This lead Henry to woo Lucy every single morning, in the hope that she’ll soon catch onto him, but unluckily she doesn’t. Lucy’s beauteous look lead Henry’s romantic love to try different tactics to woo her, while convincing Lucy’s family and friends, whom are very protective as well. This proves the idea that beauty is the trigger for love at first sight, and then as a result of this attraction, men go beyond their limits to try and win the woman. This resembles that even though our time period have changed from Shakespeare era to modern day, the fight for one's belief on love at first based on beauty have stayed unchanged.

Henry was in his way to take the Sea Serpent for a trip around the island of Oahu. While he was voyaging, the ship’s wing suddenly crushed into the steering and broke the wind barrier. Henry then had no choice but to release a small safety boat and sail to the nearest island. When he reached the Island, he chose to seat inside a small cafe and kill some time until the Coast Guard gets thee to tow his boat. While he was waiting for his breakfast, he met the beauteous Lucy, while she was having her breakfast.
Henry Roth was well known as a heartbreaker and a womanizer. His main ideas relates with going out on a date with a random girl, make sure they had an amazing time, and end with a one time sex. When the girls ask for his number the next morning, he ignores them by telling that he’s a secret agent, a traveler, he has a wife and tons of other false excuses. He ignored all the women he went on a date with until Lucy came into his life. Lucy’s ravishly beauteous look have attracted Henry and now he’s on to a chase after Lucy. Even though Henry did want to have sex with Lucy at first place, it slowly disappeared after understanding Lucy’s rare condition. Henry was overly attached with Lucy from the first time he’ve laid his eyes with her.
This segment proves how the beauty is the trigger for love at first sight. For all the dates Henry went on before, this was exclusive since Henry did feel something for someone for the first time ever. Lucy’s beauty have triggered Henry’s inner conscience and made him fall in love with her. This idea can be easily connected to “The Taming of the Shrew.”

PETRUCHIO:

You lie, in faith; for you are call'd plain Kate,

And bonny Kate and sometimes Kate the curst;

But Kate, the prettiest Kate in Christendom

Kate of Kate Hall, my super-dainty Kate,

For dainties are all Kates, and therefore, Kate,

Take this of me, Kate of my consolation;

Hearing thy mildness praised in every town,

Thy virtues spoke of, and thy beauty sounded,

Yet not so deeply as to thee belongs,

Myself am moved to woo thee for my wife.

(ACT II SCENE I. Line 193-203 )

Petruchio and others were in an argument behalf the subject of Petruchio marrying Katherine. No one could easily sink that idea of Petruchio wanting to marry Katherine since Katherine wasn’t someone who is easy to handle. Petruchio managed Baptista to give him permission to have a chat with Katherine. Baptista calls Katherine and leaves Petruchio and Katherine in a  room where the they meet each other for the first time.

Even though Petruchio's main idea related to finding himself a bride who is wealthy and beauteous at the same, it soon flourished when he met Katherine for the first time. He was amazed by her beauty, leading himself to forget all the harsh things that was uttered by others about her. Even though Petruchio had acknowledged Katherine’s roughness and unwillingness to cooperate, Petruchio cared less about those matter because Katherine's beauty was Petruchio's main attention, thus leading himself to woo Katherine no matter the cost. Petruchio was certainly devoted in wooing Katherine, but the devotion glued itself stronger when Katherine's beauty is what Petruchio was after. In addition, Petruchio basically tries to speak words that a women likes to hear, making him more vulnerable towards her.

This segment proves how the beauty is the trigger for love at first sight. When Petruchio first met Katherine, all the other important subject had vanished. Petruchio’s love at first sight have also triggered his love for Katherine and her beauty which is followed throughout the play.

Even though both of these examples had the same idea, there approach were significantly different. When Petruchio first met Katherine, Katherine had no intention or pleasure with talking with him. She constantly disrupted the conversation even though Petruchio constantly had eulogized Katherine’s look. Wherelse in the movie, when Henry first tried to chat with Katherine, she was welcoming and they both have engaged in a well mannered conversation. Basically, Henry had encountered a easier time talking with his love at first sight where Petruchio barely got to talk. But at the end, they both were fond of their future partners beauty and fought for it.

Lucy’s father and brother both have found out about Lucy’s relation to Henry. They are totalling against Henry and suspects his motifs with Lucy. The father and the brother tries to detect Henry from Lucy but fails to do so. In order to get closer to Lucy’s family and Lucy in general, Henry steals a diary that Lucy’s dad had created and decides to make a video out of it for her.

Previously, Henry was just after random girls but didn’t care much about lasting any kind of relationship with them. He didn’t feel comfortable with the idea of commitment and had always tried to ignore that approach. But in this case, Lucy’s beauty have flourished love at fight sight, and that love leaded Henry to experiment different approaches in which some of Lucy’s lost memory can be returned. Henry didn’t ever try to do things in the favor of his other dates, but in Lucy’s case, Kevin is devoted for her and will help her no matter what, just because her beauty have built up a feeling of love her inside. Not only he took the risk to steal a diary and make a video out of it,  he risked his life to Lucy's father and brother who are over protective about her. This sets Henry to make videos for Lucy every single day, which reminds Lucy about what happened the previous day. Henry went out of his comfort zone to help Lucy out, which shows Henry’s devoted love towards Lucy. Afterall, Henry have no idea will Lucy ever get back to her normal life, but he still continues to strive his best and win her over.

This segment proves how the beauty is the trigger for love at first sight, and then as a result of this attraction, Henry goes beyond his limit to try and win Lucy over, forgetting the rare disease that exists on her. The love that was built inside Henry with the help of Lucy’s beauty is not letting Henry give up hope on Lucy. Henry basically went from viewing women as an object to actually respect and honor them. This idea can be easily connected to “The Taming of the Shrew.”

PETRUCHIO

Why, what's a moveable?

KATHARINA

A join'd-stool.

PETRUCHIO

Thou hast hit it: come, sit on me.

KATHARINA

Asses are made to bear, and so are you.

PETRUCHIO

Women are made to bear, and so are you.

KATHARINA

No such jade as you, if me you mean.

PETRUCHIO

Alas! good Kate, I will not burden thee;

For, knowing thee to be but young and light--

KATHARINA

Too light for such a swain as you to catch;

And yet as heavy as my weight should be.

(ACT II SCENE I. Line 207-225)

Petruchio tries to prove earlier that Katherine is the beauteous girl in the whole wide world and everyone constantly compliments about her. Even though Katherine believes that being a lie, Petruchio instantly switches subjects and talks about things that can be more related to Katherine.
Men and women both tries different tactics to win their love one’s. Some of those tactics prove to be strong, while other ones fails. In this scene, Petruchio is trying to portray himself as a good listener and that she understands Katherine well. Petruchio is proving himself being calm and understandable towards Katherine. Petruchio knows that no one wants to argue with Katherine since she wins all the time and so he's taking that idea as an advantage. Petruchio is willingly talking back and forth with Katherine but in a formal manner that Katherine will appreciate. Any amount of appreciation from Katherine is a jackpot for Petruchio and he’s not willing to lose any chance of that happening. By both agreeing and disagreeing with Katherine in a argument manner, Petruchio is proving himself being close to Katherine and that he’s the right one for her. Son of Antonio, Petruchio never before had gotten in a discussion where he bare others to put him down. Petruchio is known to be a raging bowl of fire who disgusts failures and always aim to win his prey. But this time, Petruchio is losing himself up towards Katherine and letting her control him a bit. By doing this, Petruchio is letting himself do uncomfortable acts and going beyond his limits, just in the hope to win Katherine's beauty. Katherine's beauty certainly took control of Petruchio, making himself vulnerable towards her.

This segment proves how the beauty is the trigger for love at first sight and how soon Petruchio went beyond his limits to win Katherine over. Even though Petruchio and Henry had different approach to get closer to their future brides, their main goal was to please them. Henry took a more calm and approaching manner towards Lucy while he was trying to help her. It made Henry look more supporting towards Lucy, while winning her love as well at the same time. Wherelse, Petruchio’s approach was rough in a sense, but is understandable since Katherine’s is a rough persona to deal with. Petruchio tried is his best manner to do things that Katherine will prefer, so sooner she’ll make the process of making her bride a little easier.

By the end of the play and the movie, both Henry and Petruchio was able to meet their initial goal. There were obstacles in their way which made their journey rough, but they had set their eyes in Lucy’s and Katherine's beauty, which kept them on their feet. Understandably, both the fathers of Katherine and Lucy weren’t able to express their acceptance to the idea of them getting in a relationship. Lucy’s father was always concerned about her rare condition and Katherine’s father was concerned about her angerness. Both Henry and Petruchio were able to cope with those complication and eventually come to a happy ending.

Posted by Tahmidul Bhuiyan in Gender Studies - Menasion - d1 on Monday, April 11, 2016 at 10:13 am

The man known as Farhan Akhtar (born 9 January 1974) is a renowned Indian film actor, film director, screenwriter, producer, playback singer, lyricist and also a television host. Farhan was born in Mumbai in the arm of Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, whom are famous for screenwriting as well. Since he was raised under the influence of Hindi film industry, sensibly, he stepped he took his first step in his career by working as an assistant director in Lamhe (1991) and Himalay Putra (1997).

Not only Farhan is well accomplished by the work he has done, he is well respected as well as an actor-filmmaker-singer. Not only did Farhan had made his presence in the Indian film industry with his all-around roles, he had also represented the voice of thousands of distressed men and women in the important issue of gender equality and violence against women and girls in India.

In order to stop violence against women, Farhan started a campaign known as Men Against Rape and Discrimination (MARD). The campaign was launched in 2013 and its aim was to raise social awareness against rape and discrimination of women. There were two critical incidents that took place in India which ignited this campaign to be formed. One of the incident was when a 23 year old, Jyoti Singh was gang raped by six men, beaten and tortured in a  private bus in which she was travelling with one of her friend. Her friend only had to suffer through the torment. Secondly, the incident in August 2012 when Pallavi Purkayastha, known as a Mumbai Lawyer, viciously murdered by her watchmen just because she tried to protect herself from getting raped by her watchmen. These two incidents jointly ignited Farhan Akhtar, which resulted him to launch a campaign in the hope of stopping such incidents and give the women the respect they deserve.

Fortunately, Farhan Akhtar didn’t have to overcome adversity and challenges because there were men and women that certainly needed some changes in the city and believed Farhan was the right person to take the action. According to the Times of India, “MARD has been asking men to rethink their value system. To think about what are the various characteristics and traits that makes one a man.” As soon the campaign was launched, it alerted individuals and became a well-known trending topic on different social networking sites such as: Twitter and Facebook. Such initiative turned around to be positive reactions from world known Bollywood stars such as: Shahrukh Khan, Priyanka Chopra, Hrithik Roshan and etc. This kind of support gave the campaign respect and prospered it to flourish and to make a change.

Since Farhan's campaign was now known worldwide, the United Nations has reached out and invited Farhan to join their campaign as to be the Goodwill Ambassador of South Asia. Farhan was chosen to be the first man as the Goodwill Ambassador in the United Nation’s history. The campaign, “HeForShe” calls for men and boys to raise awareness and stand up against the inequalities which are constantly being faced by women.

Feminist Film Review: Bajirao Mastani

Bajirao Mastani was a creation of real life incident that took place years ago back in India. In this movie, the girl "Mastani" meets a warrior "Bajirao" at a war ground. After having some fondness for Bajirao, Mastani decided to break the rule and be with Bajirao at any cost. Mastani knew that Bajirao had a wife but that didn't bother her at all. On top of that, Mastani was a Muslim and Bajirao was Hindu. In the eye of religion, a Muslim could not marry a Hindu. If they did, families would separate from them and great consequences would occur. Forcing everything away that could possibly stop her, Mastani decided to do go Bajirao's palace as a form of a dancer and "earn" Bajirao. By doing this, Mastani was created her own story arc rather than depending on a man and not letting the man control her.

Here is the trailer of the movie. Enjoy...!

1) Write a review of a movie that meets the Bechdel and/or Mako Mori tests.  Cite evidence for why it meets the criteria for these tests.

= Bajirao clearly meets the Mako Mori test. The reason why Bajirao Mastani meets the Mako Mori tests are as follows:

* Bajirao Mastani does have more than one female character.

* The character, "Mastani" does have her own narrative arc. The narrative arc that the character have clearly doesn't support a man's story. Mastani decided everything herself and did do everything herself without anyone's help. Even though there is love involved in this movie, it isn't controlled by the man but the women instead. Mastani decided how everything is going to play around in her world by creating her own destiny and breaking the culture norm that she grew up in.

My anti-gender bias film test would be:

* There is at least one male and one female that is present in the movie.

* The male and female both need to talk to each other in a respective manner and not show superiority over one another.

* The male and female both should have their own narrative arc of the story. One of the narrative can't not superior the other one.

* Both the male and female must support each others narrative arc somehow.

* Both the male and female much have equal screen time and respected story line.

Review of Bajirao Mastani according to my test.

I would say this movie does meet about 60% requirement of my test. There is two character, one male and one female. Both do have their narrative arc but the arc doesn't equalize. The women get's more superiority over the male which isn't one of the requirement. Both of the gender do support each others arc but I feel like the guy supports a lot more to the women sides arc rather then both side supporting each other equally. Overall, I wish I could've given it a 100% requirement but I will wait for the movie that does meet my requirement .

Here is brief detail about the movie...

“Bonding, which is stronger than any ionic bonds.”

“Bonding, which is stronger than any ionic bonds.”

Fondness, I was floating in it. Rancorous, I was pushed to be one. Separation, it was thrown onto me. And bondness? It was caused by all of the previous. Would I regret anything that had occurred, that wasn’t so facile as I thought it would be? Nope. That’s why, I send my kudos to the Almighty for his judicious decisions on my changing world.

It was 2011. As a 7th grader, I hadn’t had much interaction with the outside world, so I surely was lacking some knowledge on how this world actually worked. I would consider myself being dumb as a rock, but that’s not the main thing about the story I am about to tell. It’s just ...there.

I ran after one girl for two years. Not literally running, but as in when water, minerals, lactate and urea mixed together that would be dripping from my head as a formation, which we call “sweat”. Dripping to the concrete below my feet, while running. 2012 was the year when I stopped running and finally got her as a trophy. I will say she’s worth more than any trophy. Everything was pretty ecstatic for days. This nascent love actually felt like a typical indian romance movie. Even though I am not Indian, my family have watched many movies from that culture due to it’s popularity. Those movies generally have scenes where the actor and actress falls in love and soon before you can blink your eyes, a choreographed dance song comes on from the background. As the actor and actress see each other from distance, the wind starts to blow, the birds start to chirp, because of lust, and the rain starts to fall when they look at each other. Ehh, I guess it felt similar, a languid feeling whenever I saw her. Than some undesirable things happened that I didn’t hope for. It was as if I am running from a tiger and now I’m at the end of the cliff, no choice but to jump off.

Summer of 2013. My dearest parents came to my room one day with an intriguing question.

“Want to visit Bangladesh over the summer?” My dad asked. I was jubilant with that question and replied with a big YES!

“Why should we visit Bangladesh out of nowhere?” I asked.

“Well, we need go make make sure that our land that we purchased years ago are fine and that anyone didn't take them over.” They’ve replied with a worried tone. That’s reasonable, I thought. In Bangladesh, stealing lands from people is as easy as 1-2-3. Just buy a standing billboard, print a name of any popular corporation, go to the land you wish to steal, and place it there. All done. No paperwork needed and nobody is going to speak against you in the court. The land is now yours.

“Hmm, we still complain about our country being so corrupted.” I murmured to myself.

I made sure all my necessary things are packed neat and clean inside my luggage, especially my summer work for the high school that I’ll be attending in September. Oh boy, packing the luggage was as easy as fitting a new harness to an old horse.

I told the girl that I chased after that I’ll be gone for three months, that I was going back to visit my homeland. Seconds later, waves of tears started to come upon my way with terrifying loads of questions. I guess I was kind of good stopping her before she influenced me to cry as well.

Started the journey in a metal beast that acts as a deadly knife ripping through the night sky. The lady dressed in a white top and a black skirt came up to me and lended me a hand as I was putting up my bag.

“Sir, do you need anything at this moment?” She asked with a ebullient tone.

“No, thank you,” I replied with an vacuous smile, even though I needed some help on how to work this 10 inch monitor that’s in front of me.

The ride was pretty cramped. Weirdly, they ran out of seats in the economic class so we got transferred to the business class. Thought to myself,

“Wow, that was some easy vip transition.” I told my mom.

“Yeah…” She replied without caring much.

I could smell the mashed potato and turkey from the kitchen as they were preparing to serve us the dinner.

“Ah, my mom is going to have a fun time eating dinner tonight.” I thought in a sarcastic manner.

The landing of the plane was pretty hilarious. As the wheels touched the runway, I could just imagine about the family members that are waiting for us at the airport. Everyone was garrulus as the plane landed safely and was clapping as well. We escorted to a private microbus and was taken to our house with the rest of our family. We chose to go to my mom’s side first and I didn’t have any objection to that.

Couple days passed and things did not feel right. I missed the girl. Even though there were friends and family all around me, I felt like the last leaf on a tree before the winter begins. It felt like my world have suddenly changed. Did it really change though? I did live at this same place for 12 years before I came to U.S. But my own home didn’t feel like home anymore. I started to question myself about my relationship with others. Why am I not feeling close? I started to get distracted more often. I could feel the warm wind passing by me and reminding me about the girl every morning I woke up. I started to distance myself from others in an ignorant way, which I didn’t appreciate and I believed they didn’t either.

Before beginning my journey, I planned to spend my time with my family and friends in a passionate manner but I couldn’t. Her thought was always on my mind and I was afraid it might look suspicious to others. I couldn’t afford to let them know about this relationship! That’ll ruin everything. It’ll be worse than taking a candy from a crying baby. Disregarding all the facts. I started to make secret phone calls from Bangladesh to her. That’s the only way I felt a little close to her. She didn’t have the intention of distracting me from meeting my family members and exchanging conversations with them, it just happened naturally. From U.S. to Bangladesh was a huge change for me. It felt like I’ve changed my whole world and the changes in those world felt my skin was being lacerated. Transition from one country to another wasn’t so easy for me and felt like separations took place.

It was as if I was Lieutenant Jimmy Cross from, “Things they Carried,” and the girl was Martha. Just like how Jimmy have deep love for Martha, which caused him to be distracted on the war ground. That then resulted in consequences, the one that caused Lavender to die. Even though I am not on the war ground, it felt like I was in one because of what happened next.

I hear loud voices through the walls, coming from the other room. My heart sank as I heard my name being called.

“Tahmid, come here right now!” My mom commanded in a bitter tone.

As I stepped inside the room, I notice my dad, my mom and my uncle all sitting on the bed looking at me as if I drank the last water bottle in the Sahara desert.

“Will you leave that girl or not? If you don’t, we can stay in Bangladesh and not go back to U.S.” My dad said in a rigorous voice.

I was more rooted to the ground than a tree after hearing what my dad said. I finally understood the whole reason behind coming to Bangladesh.

I got rejected every time as I tried to explain what I felt for her. There is no room for understandment but commands from elders. I do respect their consciousness regarding my future and how the girl might play a role in it but that’s not the whole story. They are categorizing her only by the culture she’s from and not as a person.

I couldn’t react to the changes that would be forced upon me, the my world was changing around me. The world, as in my family not being able to understand, and react in a positive way about my changes. They felt great shame for me as their child and were careless about my affection toward the girl. I didn’t disrespect that because I recognize their situation and why would they do such thing. I was vacillated with what to answer to my dad’s question regarding leaving the girl.

“Yes, I will leave her.” I answered a weary voice.

I became more taciturn. I didn’t feel that close to the ones that I thought was close to me when I returned to my second world, United States. I’ve came to learn that your perspective of things might not always match up with the world around you. But at last, the changes in my world couldn’t really destroy the bonding between myself and the girl, but made it even more stronger.

“Those Dumb Arms…”

Posted by Tahmidul Bhuiyan in English 3 - Pahomov - C on Sunday, November 8, 2015 at 9:23 am

Imagine this scenario: A woman needs a hysterectomy, the surgeon wants to do it robotically, instead of working directly with his hands, he'll will sit at a console, manipulating a set of robotic arms outfitted with tiny surgical instruments to do his work for him. In recent years, this imaginary scene has become reality, and robotic surgery has been recognized for being one of the most beneficial advantages in the medical field. Many Americans believe that the added usage of technologies has created a significant advantage in this modern world of surgery. With that being said, however, those people fail to realize that the added usage of robotic surgery creates a higher risk of complications among patients which caused significant rise of adverse events since robots are unable to perform range of things human surgeons can perform.

Becnel Law firm are one of the top firms dealing with medical malpractice suits. “The Da Vinci Surgical Robot” is being used as a minimally-invasive alternative to the abdominal incision prostatectomy. According their firm, robotic surgery has been the cause of serious traumatic situations for patients all over the country. According to Becnal Law Firm, “Having only the sense of sight to discern whether something has torn is far less accurate than being able to actually feel the tear with one’s own two hands. Because of this, more patients are suffering from damage to tissue and blood vessels.” These kinds of tear may leave the patient in serious bleeding conditions afterwards without the doctor’s knowledge. These robotic machines do not have any system to detect any misbehavior in blood flowness or the muscle structure that a doctor can notice if the surgery was done by hand. Becnel Law Firm also states, “Robot arms are used 10-15 times, instead of the three times recommended. As more surgeries are performed, the arms degrade, causing a loss in energy that travels down the arm to the tip of the instrument the surgeon is using.” The loss of energy may result in the machine not cooperating with the surgeon and leaving the patient with torn tissues, bleeding, scarring or bladder injuries, which are not easily curable with the machine. Degradable arm can result in an unsuccessful operation causing the patient to go through the robotic surgery once again.

Robots certainly don’t have the mentality to perform tasks that normal human beings can do easily, when faced with unexpected challenges. They can only do things that it’s assigned by the surgeons. Numbers of deaths may even rise because of the advance usage of these robots. Noticeable changes can be seen when looking at the rate of success the machines have achieved. According to a report in The Wall Street Journal,  “Because of the rising number of incidents—282 injury reports last year, including 28 deaths, up 34% from the year before—the FDA inspected Intuitive earlier this year and in July issued a warning letter stating the company hadn't reported certain safety changes to its Da Vinci robotics system, asking for additional corrective actions. The machines were used without any additional corrective actions which are supposed to be updated every year for any surgical equipment. Companies that are producing these kinds of machines are not legally documenting the effects which are causing problems in the long run. The increasing usage of these machines also increased the rate of death up to a shocking 34%, showing clear misbehaviour caused by these machines. Although recovery time may be faster, taking chances and trusting some machine that are not yet qualified  to support these kind of surgeries may not be worth it.

The Division of Biology and Medicine is composed of Alpert Medical School and the Program in Biology. They perform serious tasks with new technologies which enables them to interact with innovative research and allows them to write on behalf the equipments they use. As the usage of robotic surgeries increasing, the amount of time for the staff to actually stay in the OT is increasing, too. Alpert Medical School stated that, “Robotic assisted heart surgery can take nearly twice the amount of time that a typical heart surgery takes. In a longer surgery, the patient undergo anesthesia for a longer period of time and it costs more to staff the procedure.” The longer the staff have to stay in the OT, the slower or less  focus they will have for their patients. Study shows longer hours for residents may result in less focus on their actual patient. Not only longer anesthesiology require higher bills, it will also cause the patient to undergo a surgery that will take twice longer time than if it was done by hand. In reality, undergoing long hours of anesthesia may leave older patients to become seriously disoriented and delirious for days. Although these conditions may seem normal for going under anesthesia for long hours, being old and dealing with these complications shouldn’t be healthy for them. American Society of Anesthesiologist, an educational association reported patients having “Cognitive dysfunction,” after long hours of anesthesia, causing patient to be in risk of long term memory loss.

In conclusion, robotic surgeries are beneficial for patients sometimes in the future but not now. Robotic surgeries are causing much complications which is causing both the patient and the surgeon to be in a pitfall. Not only that, the whole medical community will be responsible if something harmful happens to the patient because of robotic surgeries. Some surgeons are not fully yet certified for doing these surgeries but even though they do so. In addition, some robots are being overused because of the financial downside of these things. If robotic surgeries really needs to be used in present day, the regulations behalf how it's going to be used should be monitored frequently.

Tahmid's Monologues about Climate Change.

Posted by Tahmidul Bhuiyan in World History - Block - B on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at 10:23 pm
We have done several research in our World History class to see how climate change is effecting our environment and how things plays a role on causing it. We saw videos about people coming up to protest and stop climate change and did research ourselves to get a better understand on what's causing these climate change. Climate change became a huge factor in our world at this moment and it's going out of control. Now everything we do, probably plays some kind of role causing the climate change. My goal was to inform people what they are doing to cause climate change to happen. I wanted to inform others that not to expect the world leaders to minimize climate change, but to do something yourself to minimize it. I wanted people to understand that climate change isn't a small issue anymore, it's has gone wild and if we don't take any precautions now, we will severely suffer later on. My main goal was just to inform others in a formal manner that we can make a difference, a positive difference. If we come together in hand and hand, we can do something. We have to think about how small acts can effect someone else out there. Those were my main goal while creating these monologues and I believe you will learn something too from my monologues.
Thank you.

The Questionable Penguin.

( The reader act like they were waking up) Wow, what a beautiful day? Isn’t it huh? I wonder how long it’s going to stay like this… I think I will go on top of that snowy mountain so I can slide down the hill, maybe notice some of my friends, well dead friends to be more clear? haha, not funny but true. ( The reader walks to one side of the stage) Oh look, humans! Hey there! How are you doing? Why are you folding your two hands near your eyes? Oh stop, stop it. What’s that flashing? Stop it! Are you even going to listen to me? It seems like he’s moving as I am moving too and changing the motion of his hands like it’s deformed. Are you even listening to me? I said stop the flashing. Well I don’t care, you are going to listen to me now! What are you doing here huh? Aren’t you happy yet? You know what I was supposed to do now? I was supposed to feed my chicks, yea I said chicks! They were supposed to be playing with each other but now they are gone… They are gone, their soul is gone. Oh why? Did you ask me that by the flashing? Oh, not that big deal to you I guess but it’s all because of you, yes you humans! It’s all because of you. My chicks were starting to hatch from their eggs. Their eyes were about this see this beautiful world but before they even did that, the sea locked ice started shaking. It started shaking and rippling so hard that in 5 seconds it broke away. I ran after one, than another then another but before I couldn’t catch them, they all washed away in the cold freezing water. I couldn’t do nothing but watch them, hear them crying and needing help. I was helpless. Oh stop it!!! Stop the flashing before I jump in the water and splash this icy water all over your deformed arms. But I am not going to do that, because I am not that cruel like you are. You have done all these! My cousin from Cape May saw all the harm you all were doing. The fossil fuels that you are burning, the distributin and cusbustion that you are making, are those really needed? Are you even thinking what or who might be affected by those? All those methane you are releasing into the air, and then it causing greenhouse effect where the heat is getting trapped inside the Earth and causing the ice to melt here. Oh , I think you don’t care at all! Because you know, you got Air Conditioner to cool you and your kids off. But what about my kids? Aren’t they as precious as your kids? Am I not a parent just like you are? The other day my brother passed away because their were shortage of ice and he didn’t have places where he could store the food. After starving for several days, he past away. Went away far from us, and never coming back, just like my chicks. Well, you didn’t stop the flashing because you know you are humans, selfish, greedy humans.

The Giving Environment.

( Speaker starts at the corner of the stage with a happy face, then slowly get’s sad) I have never slept in the past, I am not sleeping now, and will not sleep in the future. But there are these group of ferocious factors that are causing me to fall asleep, slowly slowly, and slowly. But I don’t want to, I don’t want to fall asleep. Please don’t ask me what are the reasons but there are so much to even tell. It’s indubitable true on how many things out there that depends on me. Why are you doing this to me? Don’t you understand how precious I am? Don’t you understand that not only you, but there’s so much more that relies on me. God has given you me, so you and your family could live happily. You are supposed to take care of me but look what are you doing to me.., you are making me to fall asleep. If I fall asleep once, do you have any clue what might happen? Your children won’t be able to play safely outside, you won’t have any natural products to feed yourself, your friends and family are going to go far away from you and never come back and many more. Do you remember, when you climbed and played with the trees who used to grow in my heart? You remember those trees who used to provide you with yummy apples and mangoes which you used to eat? Remember the trees who gave you oxygen to breathe and live this long? Do you even remember them? What did you give back to them? Those trees are just like my children. They were living their life happily until you started growing up and started caring less and less about them. Don’t have any time to look after them because you know , now you are all big and busy minding your own stuffs. Why would you care right? If you don’t do any good for them, at least don’t harm them. What if I say because of your actions, my trees won’t be able to provide enough oxygen for your next generation! Let’s not forget you telling me stop stop this change. How am I going to do that if you don’t stop it yourself. You are telling the world leaders and complaining to them like little babies, that they should stop climate change. What are they going to do if you yourself using commercial and organic fertilizers to cultivate the soil and causing nitrous oxide? You have any answer for me? No you don’t because you are selfish. All you think about it money and money but money isn’t always the first consideration, you have to understand that all the climate change is affecting me, the environment. So please, please let your friends and family know that one person can’t make a change on this big factor. Everyone plays a role on it. If you all don’t commit to help me, the environment is going to fall asleep soon.

Confused Mother.

(Mother enters the stage from the corner, acts like tired as she was coming from the work) Hmmm, had a rough day today. Need some cold water to cool myself down, but where’s that going to come from since I am an uneducated mother who lives in Bangladesh in the poorest condition. (She sees her 7 year old laying in the floor coughing and runs toward him) Abdul! What happened to you my son? Can you see or hear me Abdul? (She starts to cry near him) Abdul, answer me please… ( She takes her son and runs at the corner of the stage, yelling doctor) Doctor, doctor!! Help my son please!!! What? Tk. 30,000? Where can I get that much from? I am a poor mother who works in a industry! Okay okay, I will arrange them soon but please look after him now, I beg you! (Doctor examines for 3 minutes while the actress lays in one corner and prays to Allah) Oh Allah, please save my son. He’s the only thing that I have left. (The doctor returns) What? He have a liver disease and malaria? But he’s only 7 years old doctor, how can he have those? ( The mother breaks into tears again) They are caused by Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's) you said? And you also said CFC's mostly produces from industry? (The actress gets silent for 10 seconds) That means I caused all this? I gave my son liver disease? How you asked me? Because I work in that industry doctor, I do! My house is right next to the industry I work at, which means my son is exposed to all the CFC's the industry releases! My industry have these huge heat pumps and one day I saw on the back it says it had CFC. Those heat pumps are on 24/7 and generating all the CFC's which probably got my son liver disease. My industry also supplies refrigerator and Air Conditioner which contain CFC refrigerant. My son had a lover diseases because of CFC, and it’s all made by me because I work in the industry which produces CFC. But what can I do? (Mother yells out loud) I need money! I need money to keep food in the table for my soon. I need money because of his education. I need money to keep us both alive. My industry can eliminate the CFC refrigerant products but they won’t… I know they won’t. Because it’ll cost them to make CFC refrigerant products and people won’t purchase it. It’s the industry's loss. But do they even care who might be affected when those CFC's release? No they don’t, they won’t care about us. And more likely, they won’t care about us poor people either. They barely give us enough salary after working our sweats off for the whole day. I am bound to work in that man killing factory just because of money. I know the factory is also releasing CO2 because one of my co-worker told me the other day. Those fumes they are releasing from the top of the industry probably causing all the heat, which led my son to get malaria. What can I do to stop it? Nothing. I am just a poor mother who lives in Bangladesh where the upper class people don’t even care about us. We are like rubbish to them. But they have to start caring from now or soon their kids will face this deadly disease like my son is now facing. Well, I can’t afford that Tk. 30,000 and I know my son will die soon… but doctor, tell those rich people, to do something now and to stop producing CFC generating products, or else CFC soon will eat this whole world. (The actress goes crazy/wild) Hahahaha.

  • A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)
  • = Negative space is something that is an illusion of something. It's when the surrounded space helps a object to reflect even though it's not meant to be drawn out. The use of negative space is a key element of artistic composition.
  • B. Explain how you found negative space in 1. your cut out?, 2. in your stool drawing?
  • =  I have found my negative space in my first drawing while I was cutting out the squares of the trees. I started to notice that one side is going to reflect another if I cut the opposite of each other and keep the cutout papers. Then glue it to the opposite sides with it's opposite face and it'll be shown as negative space drawing. Then in my second drawing, I have shaded the full page except keeping the filled where I wanted to reflect a bottle. I drew it in some ways that no one notices its a bottle but the shade helps it notice that it's a bottle without actually drawing it out.
  • C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
  • =It helps an artist to use negative space because they can play with other's illusion and make many things out of it. They show that negative space can be drawn out where other possibilities aren't present.
  • D. How is negative space useful in creating art?
  • = Negative space is useful creating art because sometimes it can show two drawings inside of one another. They can show what other things can be meant in a  drawing. The artist can include many things inside one drawing and the viewer can view it in different perspective but still will find the same or different. That['s the power of negative space.

a. What is one thing that your learned specifically that you did not know before?

One thing I have specifically that I've learned was how to make things look more realistic. Especially 3d models. I have learned how to create 3d models and how to make them look like real.

b. How did leaning this thing make your drawings better?

Learning this made my drawing better in important ways. It made my drawing look even better and it really looks like how the room looks like in real life!

c. If you did this assignment again, what would you do differently?

If i did this assignment again, I would try to color it was it look in real life.

d. What is your advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing before?

To that someone would be not to rush it too fast. And if you make mistake it's perfectly fine because then you will learn from it and make it look way better! Also know about vanishing point to make your drawing better and more attractable.

Hey there! This is Tahmid and I am presenting a slide mostly consists about me.
My slide represent something about my culture and something about me and the social teen life. It was created for the cause to be noticed, be remembered by others, to be read or understood by others and also for some to take some actions.

My one purpose was o make the slide visual. For ex: '' For most of us'', if we see something appealing, it stuck to our mind for most then seeing something unattractive. Another thing that you can notice in my slide is that the size of the texts are big. Displaying big texts are easy for individuals to be noticed then texts that are really small and indubitably the person who's trying to read my slide will have a hard time and probably lose any interest if they had any at first place. SIZE MATTERS! I also tried to bleed of my images in order to make it more interesting. We don't have to fit the whole pic in the frame! As long as someone understand hat the cut off edge of the picture is supped to men, you are fine, take it easy.

Emptiness. One of my main concern while creating the slide was emptiness. One might think the more info you put on a slide the better. Yes, it might be true in some case but while you want to persuade someone to do something, it's better to make them understand it in the simplest form possible.
Why does my slide look the way it does? Well, as you can see my whole background is black and the main purpose of that was so the people can visualize the items that were being displayed at the front. Not sure if you guys did notice or not but all the pictures that are in the slide, there background was been cut off my an internet program that I found. I didn't ant to put differ background at one slide that is supposed to represent something. Plus emptiness was my main deal so if I inserted those background that came with the pic, my main value will be eliminated.

What influenced my decision? I came from Bangladesh, and I lived in the city of Dhaka. Let me tell you, Dhaka was in the top board of being the crowded city in the world! As i grew up there, every time I went out I would notice how people trying to get past each other real fast. They were not concerned of taking time and thinking about what'll happen next. As for traffic, I seen cars that were so close to each other and if they had any chance, they would accelerate and get by one another. Are they thinking about the consequences that they would have to face if a single crash occurred? How many people could die?
As for another reason us teenagers these days....we look up to stars, celebrities and what they do. They are like our idol! But are we following them in a right way?

Tailgating means to follow up something really close. The picture with the car demonstrates how they were really close to each other and the crash took place but what about in normal life? What if we followed someone or really wanted to be like then really closely and something happened to us? Yes, having an Idol is good but what if we have the wrong one? For ex: If someone follows Wiz Khalifa so closely and do whatever they do, would they have a good life? Wiz Khalifa sings about all the weed, smokes every time and what if someone did the same just cause he wanted to follow up Wiz Khalifa that closely?  The small car crash represents how their life would be damaged if they followed some ''bad celebrities'' that closely like the white truck. As you can see, the small car got more damaged then the white truck which represents, that someone will get their life in a poor condition with drugs, alcohol, weeds etc if we follow a celebrity like that. But look at the white truck, what damaged did he have? Not much as I can notice. There is my point, don't put your life in danger while you know that it's not going to affect the other who you are being influenced by. How did he second example of following a ''bad celebrity'' related to me?

Well, I was once the kid who tried to be cool and once thought about carrying guns and knifes around and act like a gangsta. But, as I thought more and more about it, it's not going to bring any light to my life but will bring darkness that can never go away. And the first example relates to me by seeing how people were having competition at the street and influenced me having competition in life but no...Life is not a race. Enjoy the good life, cause you might not know what's going to happen at the next second. Stop building  tension and let the cool breeze take you where you please to be. So please, do not tailgate, it's not worth it.

Hey There! This is Tahmid back again. I have received alot of criticism due to my previous slide not making sense to some people or it was hard for them to catch it up in couple seconds. SO, I've changed everything for my second slide and made a completely new one following what my classmates had to say.

1. One of my classmates said my previous slide was really crowded. So, on this slide I have tried to make the slide as empty as possible even though it took most of the space. In the presentation websites that we have received, we also saw the main detail of emptiness and I've worked it out on my new slide.

2. Second thing I changed on my new slide was that the catchy part. On the presentation site they've told us that to make sure you slide is welly visual-able so anyone can understand it in couple seconds. I think I've did a good on making that.

3. Third is I've learned from my classmates was the contrast. My previous slide had bad contrast and bad pictures which caused my slides to look really horrible. But on this slide I've tried to make the background orange-yellowish so the black and white birds can represent widely and the one colorful bird catches viewers eyes.

4. Another thing was the font I chose. I tried to pick out the best front that goes with the slide. That font best matches the slide because the birds dancing and flying all over and the font represent the freedom.

5. Another of my goal was to give a message or word out to the viewers who will see my slide. They can get a positive info by looking at it and it surely won't take that long time for them to recognize what it really means.

My purpose of the second slide was to catch viewers attention and put all my criticism in one place and make the second slide a better representable one. I've changed lots of important details and hope it all worked out all. Thanks for reading my blog and I hope you've learn something from it.
