The topic is international children and the effects of being abandoned or separated from family. I have struggled with being adopted out of the country I was raised in.

Working on the project I want hope to learn what are some similarities kids have when being left by them self and what are the differences in which a kid takes the experience.  This project will enable me to have a better view and give me some answer on why kids of separation have different outlooks on the world. By the end of this project I want give people an understanding of why kids that are separated may be put in the same small confined box but have to always find their way out on their own.

The project in which I will do is a video project that is interactive.  I want people not just see a movie but understand what it really all about and that's what kids can understand and have to remember in their lifetime. How growth is not all was just physical but it can be a very mental mind game.

Learning goal I have is to have independent research and interviews and get the full Idea.  I wanted to study and and learn about this goal because I have only one sided view in where I was going and to understand both sides you have to take an outsider perspective and stay true to what you believe as well.

Bonds that can never be Forgotten

Posted by Tuyet Corson in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, January 11, 2016 at 12:51 pm

Bonds that can never be Forgotten

You are standing outside of the large auditorium at the entrance to school looking for your friend. You are waiting and hoping that that person’s bus is just late, and that this won’t be another day when he doesn’t show up. Another day when you wander the halls, hoping to see his face peeking around the corner. Your eyes look over all the students trying to find that one person you could catch with one look. Then the first sound of the clanging morning bell rings and the teachers force you to go in; if you don’t, they will get mad. You linger, sitting at the doorway, hoping, waiting, staring at the door.

Finally, you make your way into the auditorium. As the assembly ends, you finally see it: the old ratty shoes with holes and that sweatshirt that needs to be cleaned. Giving a small wave the person you been waiting for since the beginning of the day comes in. Your smile grows and although it's a subtle nod, it floods you with a feeling of relief that it’s another day with someone who hates being in school just like you do. A person can’t change everything you are feeling, but this particular person can make all the feelings of dark matter go away, even if only for a few moments. No adult can change the friendship you share. You fight like siblings, but you both care so much about each other.

On a freezing Tuesday at the start of winter, that person you care so much about walks in with a look that can’t be explained, but the eyes full of pain are evident. You step away worried.  You say nothing and that same person flashes a fake smile to some other students, but you can’t help but be scared so that day you choose not to join and sit far away in the auditorium and cafe. During a lunch period a few weeks later, you find out there is some very difficult news you don’t want to hear. However, you listen as you should and this friend tells you that there is some abuse in the home, not anything physical but mental.

You know that this person’s anger stems from this family situation and it comes out with a fiery temper that can be very scary, but if you know why there is anger and where it comes from it changes the perspective of a person. Why is this happening? Why is there so much pain in the eyes of the one person you feel so close to? Why can’t you take the pain away? It’s not right for anyone to hurt your friend and all you can do is stand by their side.

A mouse will always be caught by snake if it chooses not to pay attention. That is what happened one day when I was told that my friend Nathan would be sent off to a camp/school for his anger problems. He would keep getting angry and he would pick fights with students but never got in trouble for his actions until the day a teacher witnessed one of his fights. It upset me that he chose to keep exhibiting the same behavior even after he got caught and it became clear that a punishment was not going to change his attitude. In the following weeks, Nathan would be out at least once a week. He used any excuse he could get out of school, including being sick, having to watch his younger sibling and even faking an injury.  I always knew he was a hard head but I didn’t see how hard it was until that moment. He would later tell me that he was going to be sent to a camp to help him deal with the anger find ways to express himself other than fighting. I asked him how long he would be gone for, but he never gave me a clear answer and we never bring it up again.  I quickly learned that Nathan would be the mouse and his drama was the snake that would catch him every time.

There were some bold statements we tried to make about the culture of the school. I found out later the real ways the school should have been handling certain things but that would be three years after Nathan left my life. I questioned why this person would be taken away from me. He was the rock who, at the time, I believed was holding me together. To me he was the friend who cared and the friend who would listen to the problems I had, which all seemed so small in comparison to what he was going through. I still hold him in high regard as a person and friend who has had an impact on my life.. Nathan was not perfect not even close to an angel, but he had fire that no one at the time could get out. Under that fire was some who wanted just to be heard and I was able to listen.

Nathan and I had bond that I felt and still feel could never be broken. My relation was like a character from The Things they Carried. The character was named Rat Kiley who told a story about a letter he wrote to a fallen soldier sister to tell how great the soldier was as a friend and person. The difference in this story is that this story is not a letter but the idea of what is written is the same.  At the time I was going through a lot just like he was at home. There was never abuse like the way he had but stress I could feel. I was very unhappy life to me was not going well.  I will never feel different from what he gave me was joy to be a friend. He stood by my side and I stood by his. His actions and reactions did make our stand against time. We would not be physical friends for long but he would stand in my memory for a long time.

You don’t wake up one day and say that person is going to impact the way your life is. That is impossible. But as humans we do look back a lot more than people believe. There is a sense of specific events that are woven together to make us who we are. When flashing back into the past Nathan is one of the first choices who impacted a life that is not perfect.

Transgender Rights

Posted by Tuyet Corson in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Monday, November 9, 2015 at 1:00 pm

Transgender people have a very hard time being a part of normal life. A lot of people have been trying to fight for the transgender community but it’s very taboo to do so.  Transgender teens have a hard time at schools because of bullying and being in able to be “normal.” Normal to most teens are just fitting into the environment around them. There was a case where a student named Nicole Maines could not use the bathroom because she was born a boy. The case was brought to court with the help of Maine Human Rights Commission. The court changed two laws that would require a separate bathrooms based on gender choice.  In the court’s decision, justice warren silver wrote “it has been clearly established  that a student’s psychological well being and Although, in the United States all people are supposed to have equal rights, transgender teens and adults have been discriminated against in their schools, workplaces, communities because people don’t understand why these people want to be the opposite gender.

educational success depend upon being permitted to use the communal bathroom consistent with her gender identi.” (Sharp). This is not easy to understand for many because it’s new and people are not sure why people are transgender. Its very complex but educating helps information flow easier and more consistent when understanding why and who the transgender community are as a whole.

Adults who are transgender have a hard time being accepted into communities around the United States.  For this reason most transgender adults have become homeless or have been evicted from their homes. People have chosen to discriminate against transgender people and as a result is that they are left with being unequal in the United States and loosing basic humans need. Statistic from National Center for Transgender Equality says that one in five people who are transgender are homeless. Shelter tried to help but failed in doing so because they can’t serve transgender people the same way. Transgender adults are not the only people have problems in communities teenages are have some of the same difficulties and some that are just focused on that group. Lots of youth that are transgender end up in jail as a juvenile. There is evidence that shows that over 300,000 LGBTQ youth that are arrested each year and the LGBT youth make up 5 percent of 7 person the youth in the United States. (Center of american Progress). The reason why this might be happening is that these youth might be in family situations that are not good, there might be abuse, and they could even be homeless. This all effect why LGBTQ youth is in a very unsafe and unhappy environments that can cause these problems.

Unfairly judge Transgender adults have a hard time in the work force. A lot of times people say nothing about what's going on or try to avoid coming out at all. Harassments and unfair treatment to the adults at work.  The Huffpost had an article that talked about big companies having started putting in policies about not discriminating against transgender people. “3 out of 500 fortune 500 companies in 2000 had policies in place but now more than half of those companies do have policies in place.” The reason this is important to know is that it's no protects these companies from lawsuits against them and now people can work freely through the company. The internet has helped transgender people communicate and be more organized and together then feeling like they have no one around them. Connection are made when people are talking and getting together more. But discrimination and harassment still happen in workplaces. According to Center of Progress 41 persent of gay and transgender people have been verbally or physically abused and 26 percent of transgender people have been fired.  There is hidden discrimination and harassment in the workplace that hurts good workers but because they chose to be the opposite gender they are targets.

In a country that says that there is a lot of freedom it's hard to see it when people are put in a corner. It’s not fair  to the people that are doing really good work and trying to be normal. There is a unfairness when it comes to people rights and people that are transgender they are treated like aliens or second hand citizens. Transgender youth should not be bullied or discriminated against to be their true self and adults should be able just have the jobs they won’t will out being abused or harassed. Things have changed over time and got a little better but they can always improve so people feel like they are apart of whatever they are doing. No one should have fear or be hated for something that can’t be changed.

Sea

[ A boy is sitting on a dock looking at the water. ]

Why is this water so dark? My friends are telling me that the fish look bad and they wont touch it.  Dad I wish were here you would be as scared as me. The water is getting worse every time I come up here. What scares me is what if I have to move? I will not move till its the worst. Dad I promised you that I would never leave but that may be my only choice. Our little town has almost all gone accept for the fisherman. There must be away to fight back this dark water. You always said the worst will all ways past and I hope it does.

[pause ] reality

¨Hey jay - I am good- you are leaving when - I see - I will stop by later - I know the water is getting bad- I am with my uncle- He may not stay there is not money coming in- I don't want that to be an option this is my home- ok I will see you later.

[goes back into thought]

Dad I been thinking about all the times you and I used to fished here. You said the world endless and that fish will always need to be caught. The sea was so clear you could see all the rocks that fish would jump out. Now the water is dark and you can’t see anything in the water. You made me feel like everything was going to be good even if it was not.

I believe there something wrong but what? The loss of my town is scary. Everybody is leaving what is there left to save? I want to fight this but its almost a disease that killing everything I love. Dad I hope you know I would never do anything that would change our life we had made here. But its not safe to stay.

World with worry

[Women is on stage at a conference]

Hello everybody thanks for coming today. My name is Anne and over the last few years my life has changed. Living in New York in Manhattan I never thought in a million years I would ever be speaking on climate change. But my last job has change my mind on climate change.

[sites in a chair in the front of stage]

My job was working for a large company and we built keyboards for computers. I never really thought of what really goes into the manufacturing of the keyboards. I worked hard on design with a design team. We all wanted a perfect design that could pull in the big bucks. One day I was walking home looking up at the sky. I Started to think where do things come from.  How are they built. We all have theses ideas but to make your ideas you have to make the product.

[stand up and stares into audience]

I started to question where my company. I knew that there was outsourcing involved. But I later learned that the mass production was being in Asia in large factories that had a high rate of chemicals that were really hurting the environment and the people inside the factories. I was fired and yet no matter how much I try to not think about what this company had done it stuck with me. I believe all theses companies need to change and understand that factories and plants are killing us without knowing or caring. So I want to stand against this and change the air because I want my kids and the future to have a healthy and happy place to live.

A life change in a moment

[A man sites on porch writing ]

Dear Prime Minister Enda Kenny,

My name is Charlie I am writing to  you because my family farm is being destroyed. The land that I live on and have my family farm on is getting worse every day. Everyday I see crops stop growing and there is nothing I can do but watch.  My life is being torn apart every moment of every day. There is no complete answer.

You and your friends watch as the things we need in life are being striped away. I believe you can make a change one that can have a huge impact on what’s going on. To be angry at you means I need to know you which I don't. There are many farms that need even more help than mine and peoples homes and land are being taken away.

As there is no money coming in. I hope you understand that just waiting till all the farms have all disappeared and there is nothing left is a very bad idea. If we can change what's going on now we can change the course of where all these farms futures are going towards.

Sincerly,

Charlie.

Blog #3 Adoption and Effects on people

Posted by Tuyet Corson in English 1 - Dunn - X on Friday, May 30, 2014 at 9:01 pm

This is my third blog for my adoption piece. I have written two other blogs about adoption. My first blog was all about what I knew and why I wanted to study adoption. My second blog was about what I have learned from adoption. This blog is to incorporate all of that and something I was able to do out side the world called Agent of Change. My topic is adoption and the effects it has on adopted children. There are a lot of people don't understand about adoption when it comes down to the child. Adopted children are as affected as the adoptive parents. I am so close to this topic not just because I am adopted but I understand what it can be like not truly understanding where you fit in. This is my post for change and its the last phase of this project that I am doing.

Adopting kids is something that is very hard to explain to people who never gone through the process. There are many details but the out come is amazing and it can change the lives of the people that are adopting and the adopted. I want people to understand the myths and the facts to adoption. Myth vs Fact can be very closely related to one another. I did a Power Point presentation on adoption to my classmates. I wanted to know how much they knew about adoption and see if they could pick out the Myth from fact. My classmates where able to pick up on the myths and facts about adoption. The Power point that I made had information on adoption as well as a true or false game. The game had statements that  I heard as well as question that are most comenly asked. There are a lot of things that happen behind the scene way before and after children are adopted. So this presentation was so I could get the message out there that there are two sides to everything.

There is a lot of things that when you think about it seem very complicated and difficult to understand. Adoption to a lot of people can seem like that but once you get the ball rolling it can become much easier to see the right path. Adoption has a lot of emotion attached to it. The child is to be give to people that love and can take care of the child. The new parents that take the child in is to have a new member of their family. But there can be a lot of heart ache because sometimes the child can emotional get along. It can be a struggle because they have come so far. Adoption finds kids that have no home a place to live and at the end of the day every child has a born right to have a loving home.

My change so far in this project was to really tell my story and inform people about adoption. I feel like this agent of change work that I have done has started a conversation on adoption. With this part of the project I have learned somethings about my self. Like I can just have my opion I have to look deeper into thing.

In my Agent of change piece of the project there are somethings i could have done differently. My presentation could have been better if I had cliff notes for my self and I didn't have to read off the board. My thoughts ended up being every where and it was hard to explain. My power point was very boring and bland and my slides where to short. These things I could have made a lot better . There are still things that can be done to my my work look much better then they did when I did my first presentation.

Adoption will always be a large part of my life it defines who I am as a person. Adopted kids can be miss understood. But I am here to say we are no different then anybody else. Adoption is a great but you need to want to climb to know was can be waiting on the other side.

These photos are from my presentation for my classmates

Negative Space

Posted by Tuyet Corson in Art - Freshman - Hull - b1 on Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at 10:12 am

What is negative space?

Negative space is anything that creating the object/image or out lining the object that is black.

Explain how you found negative space in your 1. your cut out? 2 in your stool drawing?
Negative space was around the object and inside the object I took what ever that would define the house and I was able to flip sertain peices of the house to make it look like one full house. In my stool drawing I drew all the space around and in the object to make that drawing.

Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?
It helps and artist to see in negative space to define their art and create a clear image of what they are drawing.

How is negative space useful in creating art?

Negative space is useful in creating art because negative space can define you art and it can also mess up your art if you have to much negative space.

You in the world - by Tuyet Corson

 Research blog 2.

This blog is my second blog about adoption and the effects. Blog1 was all about what I new and things I researched online. My topic is not common because its not something talked about much. But for me it was very important topic to talk about because I didn't really like that I was adopted. There are parts of me that think adoption is bad for the children because they don't have a choice where they are placed and they don't understand why their birth parents would give their child up. I have learned that adoption is really great and you have to understand not everyone wants their children for one reason or another. My family is really cool and I love them even though I am not blood related. For other adopted children I can't say what they have gone through but I can say adoption has given children loving home and they are surrounded by acceptance. I found this quote that I thought was really cool. ¨Adoption is not about finding children for families, it's about finding families for children.¨by Joyce Maguire Pavao, founder of the Adoption Resource Canter in Cambridge, Massachusetts. I have now done some out side research and found out really options on this topic.

I have chose to do a survey about adoption to find out what people really think about adoption. My survey was geared toward adopted kids. I wanted to see what there opinion was and how it has effected them. But my survey results didn't really go as planned. The Survey was sent out to my school but my results were almost inconclusive and showed very little help. I did find that most people took the survey were very supportive of adoption. But as of now only 3 people who took the survey where adopted. Which didn't help me to find any clear answers on this topic. I did a little more online research on adoption and found some very cool websites that talked about adoption. The websites help me will a little more detail of what adoption can be like for a child.

This topic holds a lot of tough questions and they seem to be come bigger every time I think there is answer. Adoption can be great and not so great for the people that are in on the process. A child gets a home, the two adults get a child, and of course there is the group that gets money. But sometimes there is pain, love, and miss understandings. Pain being if the adopted child has difficulty understanding why they where adopted. That child may have question their adopted parents can not answer. Then the adopted parents can go under a huge amount of the mental abuse a adopted kid could put them through because they can't answer those question. Love is where those question can be answered. I know I have done a lot to my adopted parents emotional and mental because they could not answer my burning question. But no matter what I did I know they love me and I have to accept that even though we are not blood related we are family. The miss understanding is when the parents of adopted child has all these unanswered question. My survey may have not answered my questions but I will find my answers.

My next blog will be about how I can effect change. This is a project seem to get me off guard because I didn't know what I could do. But now I think I have a very clear plan and a good idea of what I could do. I want to do a presentation on adoption in two places one being at my current school Science Leadership Academy and my Quaker meeting house. They will be only a 30 mins long with a short question and answer groups. I want to do that so people really see what adoption can do to children. I believe if people have more knowledge on the effects they can more under stand adopted kids. There is always more then one side of the story for most and I believe I could try to give balance between both.

So to end this blog on a happy note. I wanted to say that adoption is not all bad. It can be the best thing ever. But understand that an some adopted children has question and will always be trying to get those answers. Don't brush things under the rug and be real if you can't answer them you can't answer them. My hope is that some will understand where I am coming from and why adoption is not always a clear path. You will hit bumps in that path and you have to take time and smooth out those bumps.

Respiration

Posted by Tuyet Corson in Bio-Chem 9 - Sherif - A on Thursday, December 19, 2013 at 1:49 pm

In Bio-Chem we learned about respiration and photosynthesis.  After we learned everything we got into groups of four and we picked a paper out of a beaker.  The paper either said photosynthesis or respiration and our mission was to make a presentation about that.  My group got respiration.  While on this unit we learned about the different functions of respiration and our slides shows our learning.  One thing that I learned that I didn't know before was that all most all living creatures use respiration. We  also learned about the equation of respiration and the mitochondria which is where respiration happens.  We also learned about glucose.  If I was to change one thing about our slide is that I wish I could put audio over my presentation.  I could not figure out a way to do that.

Effects of Adoption 1 Blog

Posted by Tuyet Corson in English 1 - Dunn - X on Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at 10:28 am

My name is Tuyet, or Tea. I am writing this blog for my English class. I go to a school called Science Leadership Academy. My assignment is to write a blog about a topic I want to find out more about or something I am passion it about. I will also do outside project about this topic. Its called You In the World. My topic is The Effects of Adoption. Adoption is something that I wanted to talk about because I was adopted from Vietnam and I had a hard time with being adopted.

"Adoption" For some that would means hope. Others that means a life. There are many children and young teens that are without a home and are in adoption programs across the world. This topic hits home for me because I was adopted. I know for me adoption made me feel different. So I wanted to find out how adoption has effected others. Adoption opens a lot of doors for children and teens but adoption can also close doors. Everyone has a story to tell and this blog is to show how adoption can change someone for life.

We are different from others. Most cases children don't get to chose who they live with. Sometimes there are families that take adopted kids in and treat them different from their own blood. There is a question I want to answer before I really get in to adopting and the effects. This question is What's the difference between foster care and adoption. Foster care and adoption are two different things but have a common line between them. There are kids involved in adoption we are given away by our parents where as foster care is where kids are given to a family for a period of time then are given back to their parents. There are some cases where a child would be given to the state and put in foster care and then be put up for adoption because their parents have some reason on why they wouldn't be able to take them out of foster care.

I know what adoption can do to some. This site explains why We sometime don't understand why we are not with our family that were supposed to rise us. I know I am not the only one who has gone through this. When children are adopted they get a roof over their heads and a family that wants to care for them for life. Children know where the have been and understand that they are not blood bond to the people they are with. They also know that even though they are not blood bond to these people they understand that they are loved. Children that are adopted mature very quickly. My best friend in sixth grade went through a really hard time with his family because he felt out of place. He always acted older then his age he wanted a wall between him and his family. Now I can't say I been through the same but there was a point I felt I wasn't wanted. But as I grow I have learned that no matter what petty problems my family loves me and I love them.

I wanted to share my story about the way I handled being adopted. But their are a lot of children who also have stories. So here is their stories and tide bites about what being adopted is like. There has been a long history of adoption in the world. Adoption was not always about building a family or growing a family. In the past kids used to be adopted to become slaves. I found an article abut adoption and it history. History of adoption I believe we can learn a lot on how modern as well as the past had adoption.
