Episode 2: Literary Lenses

Group Members: Chris Jacobs, Kaleb Harris, Raven Tanpranadi, Tony Nelson, Yasir Thomas

In our second episode, we explained three literary lenses used in the book The Road by Cormac McCarthy, so far. They are Feminist, Marxism, and New Historic lenses. We noticed there is a lack of women within the book and there isn’t much of a social class. The author doesn’t give us any hints as to why things are this way so we took it upon ourselves to point these out and find our own answers.

Book References:

  • Page 195, a woman captured by three men (feminist lens)
  • Page 57, the mom (mentioned in the first episode)
  • Page 185, the dad about to get robbed (marxist lens)

Advanced Essay #2: Opportunities

Posted by Yasir Thomas in English 3 · Block · B Band on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at 1:42 pm

My goals for this essay are: to get as much writing time as I can, try to exceed the requirements and not do the bare minimum Have my writing be clearer get my essay proofread and go deeper into ideas that need it. I’m most proud of my essay is the part when I talked about the article because I feel like I went into depth and explained.

This is a picture of refugees trying to cross into another country. There are barbed wires that go from the ground and past their heads. When you look into the distance, it seems like the wires never end as if it’s a maze and what you can see past that is just barren land. It looks as though the people have been walking for a while. The man on the far left in the front is trying to squint to see how much longer the walk is for them. The child in red at the back looks like he or she has no clue as to what’s happening. Everyone is walking in pairs of three, probably because their traveling as a group or there isn’t enough room for everyone to walk together. Another thing is that everyone is wearing jeans and jackets. It’s nothing too heavy that might slow them down but no one is carrying luggage.

When it comes to moving to another country, it’s all about the different opportunities that you can have. The legal way of moving to America, getting a green card or an immigrant visa, can take more than 10 years. Some of the different ways of getting a visa are getting a family petition or an employment sponsor. Even with these options, people still have to get different forms and money. Another thing is that not everyone gets approved or don’t have enough time. That’s when people have to resort to sneaking into a country, which is dangerous and could put them back into the situation they once were or worse. After arriving and settling migrants need jobs and money to support themselves and whoever else might’ve arrived with them. Unfortunately, most jobs don’t pay as much and don’t give migrants the same respect as everyone else. The main jobs that people usually associate with migrants are agricultural workers, construction workers, drivers, tailors, maids, and housekeeping. What people don’t realize is that as long as they’re citizens and have working papers and some money to start with, they can be whatever want. It’s not uncommon for migrant families to have their own business because they do have a lot to bring to society and our economy.

The article, Immigration Must Be Considered An Opportunity For America Not A Problem by Steve Case says, “Countries are either open and growing — absorbing new ideas, people and ways of doing things — or they are closed and falling behind, trying to defend the status quo, exclude outsiders and shut out new thinking.” This quote relates to my topic of opportunities because if countries continue to evolve and let the idea of immigration become normalized then people won’t have to come here both illegally and legally just to worry about getting deported or getting treated as less of a person. It might also the immigration process easier. People wouldn’t have to worry about the types of forms they have and when they might expire, and they wouldn’t need immigration lawyers.

The book that I’m currently reading, Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue, starts off with a guy named Jende, who moved from Cameroon (Central Africa) to America with his wife and daughter, going to a job interview to be a chauffeur. He was able to get his job because a family member talked to the employer and recommended him even though Jende did have to lie about his work permit and driver’s license. A quote from page 17 says, “You think a black man gets a good job in this country by sitting in front of white people and telling the truth? Please, don’t make me laugh. I just didn’t want to tell you beforehand and get you even more nervous.” When moving to somewhere new, people should make sure that they have connections with others so that they can get job opportunities and things that would put them in a comfortable position.

In Exit West, the form of magical realism that the author used was portals for the people that needed it the most. There were numerous people that went through portals to go somewhere safer than where they originally were. Nadia and Saeed needed to leave their home country as soon as possible because of the ongoing violence and lack of resources that were there. In Chapter 6, they were successfully able to pass through a portal that took them to a restroom on the Greek island of Mykonos. I used this example because, without the portals, the refugees in the book would probably still be at wherever they came from.

In conclusion, opportunities are a huge part of migration. Without opportunities, most of us wouldn’t be where we are today.

Stressed Out Drop Out

Posted by Yasir Thomas in English 3 · Block · B Band on Friday, September 20, 2019 at 9:04 am

Intro: The theme of my essay is about dropping out and stress from school. I wanted to write about something that other students could relate to something on a personal level and have it be somewhat entertaining. I’m proud of doing more than the minimum word count and having it not be a formal essay that people wouldn’t want to read. I made this entire essay off of procrastination and now it’s something that connects to the real world. For the next essay, I think I would have the paragraphs be shorter and not a sight for sore eyes. I want something that’s pleasant and easy to read.

September 12. Another ordinary day for me. I was sitting on the MFL, wondering what the day would be like. The train is already crowded, loud, and musty. I didn’t even know who was around me because people kept coming on and off the train. My day couldn’t have started any worse. For a few minutes, I continued to think that, until the english class writing assignment popped in my head. Ugh! Another writing piece. Of course, I don’t know what to write about and would wait until the last minute to do it. Should I write about the assignment itself or my surroundings? This year I wanted to be a changed student, doing my work on time and participate in class. But, it just never happened. Becoming a changed person takes time and can’t be done overnight, that’s one thing I failed to realize. On the first day of school, I thought I was gonna do my work, but my laziness kicked in. “Doors are closing.” The train operator said. I have about 30 more minutes before I get to City Hall and wouldn’t have a chance to write this paper, so what should I write about. When it comes to writing about myself I never know what to do. I think I know myself, but when it comes down to it, I don’t. To others, it probably won’t make sense, but to me it does. You should be able to think about yourself. When someone says to know your limits, you should but limits change every day. Now that a few minutes have passed and the train isn’t as noisy I can finally concentrate. My scene will be about my thoughts!

And that was how I started off my day. Writing a paper in less than 25 minutes trying to make it seem like I put effort into it, but I’ve already gotten to the point in my life where I no longer care about school. I’m ready to drop out of school and become an illegal exotic dancer and become famous or something. I think some people my age are at that stage too. No longer caring about school or the future, just living in the moment for the moment. Of course, I’m still going to continue to do my work because I do want to go to college and get my degree and have a career. Even if I was to stop doing my work, it would show on my report card.

During the last quarter of my freshman year, I had completely given up. Teachers kept assigning work until the last minute and I wasn’t willing to do it. In English class, we had to write an essay that used ethos, pathos, and logos. I did have a few ideas in mind when I started, but none of them were good enough to get a B on so, my English teacher at the time helped me come up with better ideas. The argument that I stuck with was “artists of the hip hop and r&b genre deserves as much respect as artists from others.” At the time, it sounded like a great idea but it wasn’t. I ended up bs-ing the whole thing because there wasn’t enough research and energy put into it. It also reflected on my report card. A grade too embarrassing to mention in an essay that no one is going to read. My mom and advisor were disappointed. I could tell by the tones of their voices and by their facial expressions. Moral of the story: bs anything you want as long as you’re able to face the consequences, unlike me.

Even while writing this essay I was ready to give up and write about anything. It’s something that we do in life, give up and forget or finesse.

High school is supposed to be the best and hardest part of our academic careers but we tend to focus on the difficult parts. It’s not fair to us that we’re forced to go to school and have people say “you’re here to learn not to have fun.” It’s not like we have a choice in the matter. We should have an option. If it was up to me, I would probably show up to school ⅘ days and have a job. It would be nice to say let’s just not go to school today and have fun.

Teachers like to say, I don’t like grading your homework, but continue to give us a lot of work. Here at SLA, we have 5 class periods and most of the teachers give us homework every day and it’s not even something we could do in 10 minutes. The stress and workload can cause students to drop out or become depressed depending on what’s going on in their life. Having this mentality can be a phase, not only for teens but for all students.

Lord of the Flies Essay - Yasir Thomas

Posted by Yasir Thomas in English 2 · Pahomov/Rhymer · D Band on Monday, March 25, 2019 at 1:53 pm

Not everyone would be able to feel like they’re able to do what they want because the rules and people aren’t to their liking. In, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, most people decided to leave the group and made their own tribe because the previous one wasn’t working out for them. In America, people feel the same way since there’s a lot of criticism and misuse of power. If an entire civilization was able to adjust the rules to meet everyone’s standards, then no one would feel like they’re being exiled by the community or person in power because everyone is satisfied.

In, Lord of the Flies, Jack was the first person who decided to leave the group. At first, he held a meeting to see who wanted him to be the new leader but no one voted for him. The book states, “‘I’m not going to be apart of Ralph’s lot ... I’m going off by myself. He can catch his own pigs. Anyone who wants to hunt when I do can come too’” (127). Jack was so frustrated to the point where he had to separate himself from the others. Ralph was the voted leader of the entire group but couldn’t make any decisions on his own or be brave enough to lead everyone. Jack’s version of a leader at the time was for someone to be brave, a hunter, and ... , but Ralph felt the complete opposite. No one had stood up for Jack which could’ve made him feel like everything was unfair.

In Aditi Khorana’s article, she talked about the story of how her family came to America as immigrants and that she was born here. She also talked about how her life had changed after the election. She said, “In the aftermath of the election, after living in this country for thirty-something years, I truly felt like an exile in my own country. Whatever misgivings, hurt and outrage had till then, largely resided underneath the surface, coming to the fore now and then, now erupted in the form of an uncontrollable moral outrage”. This is saying that now someone in power wants to completely stop more illegal immigrants/refugees from coming in and sending them out, that her family is now in pain. Now that they had made a new home, it’s trying to be taken away from them since they aren’t like everyone else. This relates to the book because ever since Ralph was elected and wasn’t doing his job the right way, Ralph felt like he didn’t fit in and someone else should’ve been elected.

In chapter 9 of the book, Jack held a feast for his tribe and whoever else wanted to join. Everyone in the original group besides a few people had left to go to his feast. The author says, “Even at that distance it was possible to see that most of the boys - perhaps all of the boys - were there” (147). Everyone had left Ralph because there wasn’t any meat and no one there were hunters. Jack’s tribe was filled with hunters and they had meat for everyone to eat. Even though Ralph was focused on getting off of the island, people still wanted to survive and have fun at the same time. This is connected to my thesis because once one person exploits the leader then whoever doesn’t like it would feel the need to leave.

In conclusion, if the rules were bent to benefit everyone, then no one would feel like they earned any power. In the book Jack was the first to leave the tribe because he wasn’t voted for. In my real life example, Aditi felt like she didn’t belong ever since Donald Trump got elected.

Good Cop, Bad Son

Posted by Yasir Thomas in English 2 · Pahomov/Rhymer · D Band on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 7:06 pm

“Hey doctor, I need someone to talk to. Is it okay if I sit here?” I walked over to the couch and laid down.

----

My mom told me, if I ever get arrested or go to jail, she wouldn’t bail me out or assist in my early release.” I don’t understand how someone could do that to their own child, let them suffer and rot in jail. Their lives would be ruined and they wouldn’t have anything to look forward to when they get out.

My mom is an officer for the Philadelphia Police Department. Every day we leave the house we say prayers to keep everyone safe, but a prayer isn't good enough for me. They say that it’s God will if someone dies, but what stops it from being our time just because we say something so simple. Being an officer is a dangerous job. Especially with black lives matter and people shooting whoever they feel like it. How could you go out and try to do justice for other people when you have children at home, it's just selfish, and if you die helping others, would there ever be any real justice? You can’t leave your family behind because you decide to go do good.

----

I release my stress with drugs and alcohol. Being underage doesn’t mean anything, as long as I get that amazing feeling that makes me forget everything. Stealing, robbing, and killing gives me a rush. Violence, sex, and drugs, they’re the only things that keeps me going. But now that I have someone to talk to, I might not need it anymore.

----

I sat down on the new couch mom just bought and reached over to the remote. The first thing that was on the tv was about a shooting in Germantown. I thought about how crazy it was that there are so many shootings in this city. Then it finally hit me. My mom worked at the 14th district and that’s in Germantown. My heart started pounding rapidly like it was trying to come out of my chest. The thoughts and emotions that were going through my head were too much. Tears started to flow out of my eyes instead of words coming from my mouth. I was ready to kill someone, anyone if they had hurt my mom.

I remember rushing over to my neighbor's car and drove off with it. Once I got to the area, I parked it a few blocks away so that no one could find it. When I saw her being brought to an ambulance truck, my life flashed before my eyes or maybe it was just the edibles finally starting to take an effect. I started getting dizzy and fell onto the ground. When I woke up, I was in the hospital sitting next to the bed that my mother was laying in. I was examing myself, making sure that no one tried to run any test on me, but I felt like I was searching for something else too and didn’t know what it was. I looked up at my mom and saw her laying there as if she was lifeless and she was.

----

“Doctor, I don’t know what I’m going to do. I have siblings that need to be taken care of, and I’m only sixteen. What will do? She’s the only one that truly knew us and knew how to care for us. Whew. It’s okay if you don’t have an answer right now. I just came to vent.”

Systems Essay

Growing and maintaining my hair has always been a struggle for me. Every day I would think about what I would want to do with my hair and how it would turn out later. I’ve been on a long journey with my hair. I hated it, loved it, cut it, and grew it. I’ve also been through many different styles. It’s crazy to think about how many different styles I had over the course of a few years.

I was in fourth grade when I first began growing my hair out. It was longer than it currently is. I let it grow out because my father had cancer and all of his fell out. I would grow it out for him because he asked and I thought that it would inspire him to continue with the therapy, but trying to maintain my hair was always a struggle. I was tender headed and every little thing that happened to hair, even when it wasn’t braided it was still hard to deal with. After a while, my mom would always ask me when I would get it cut.

Once I reached fifth grade, I got a haircut. I felt like a new person. I could feel the wind brushing against my head and the sun beaming down on it. It has been a while since I felt the feeling. When I walked into class, no one recognized me, and when they did, they were surprised. Being nearly bald felt amazing until I realized how much I missed my hair and the feeling of the just having something there and playing with it. I started missing my long hair and thought about growing it back.

The summer before 8th grade, I began to grow out my hair again without even realizing. I came back to school with a mini afro and once again, I looked like a new person. 8th grade was the time that I struggled the most to keep up with my hair. Everyone would say, “I love your hair! Can I touch it?” When someone asks if they could touch my hair I would usually think that they meant to feel the texture, but they would play in it, pull it, and just mess up my hair completely. I used to put a lot of effort into making my afro look good. In the middle of the school year, I decided to get braids because I tired of everyone ruining my hair. My hair was growing but it wasn’t as long as I wanted it to be.

My freshman year here I started off with braids for a week or two. Then I took my braids out every other week and had a messy afro. I would also have designed cornrows and other types of styles. One of my favorite styles that I had was a braided mohawk, I felt like it was amazing because I didn’t think that it would look right. Soon after, I wanted a haircut but not a full one. Soon after I a drop-fade (the hairstyle I currently have). Right after I got my fade, I was filled with joy since it finally happened. When I walked into school everyone was overly excited and wanted to touch my hair. I felt like a brand new person because it was new and exciting. It's easier to take care of since I have half as much hair.

Looking at the amount of hair that I have now, I regret cutting off all my hair when I was younger. It’s probably one of the biggest regrets that I have. I miss having a lot of hair and being able to do a lot of things with it. Now, I’m just experimenting with my hair seeing what things I like and what things would look good on me. The next few things that I would try doing with my hair are curls, hair dye, and another type of braids.

My element is titanium and the atomic number is 22. It was named titanium after a titan from greek mythology because it’s strong. Now it is mainly used to make aircraft, spacecraft, and missiles because of how strong and dense it is. I chose to do an airplane because it’s made out of titanium. At first I wanted to do a cool airplane until I realized how difficult it was to draw. So then I stuck with a regular one that only shows the front view of an airplane. To make this print I made numerous amount of sketches until I found one that was the best that I could do. Then, I traced the sketch onto tracing paper then put it on the foam. If I had to do this project over again I would chose something that would resemble how strong titanium is instead of doing a plain airplane. The part of the project that I enjoyed the most was finishing and turning in the art because I would worry about how good it was until I realized I did the best I could.

One Slide Remake- Yasir Thomas

IntroTech- 1 Slide Remake (2)
I learned that I shouldn’t have a lot of pictures crowding my slides. People told that words were hard to read and that the quote should be bigger. Also, either all of the pictures should be rotated or none of them should. I didn’t have to put as much stuff on my slide as I needed to at all.
I started from scratch again with my slide because I used too much space on my slide. I also didn’t use any of the rules that I researched on my slide either. This time I used less space than what I did the first time. I took out all of my pictures and only put one this time. I still used my quote and my name. Another thing that I changed was the font of my name and quote.
The research helped me to use bigger font sizes and more professional fonts. I also tried to use the contrast rules and rule of the thirds. Then I used empty space on the sides of my slide around the text. The sources that I used were Elements of Design Defined, Presentation Zen, and Slide Design Link.

IntroTech- 1 Slide (2)

My one slide is about the things I like and things I don’t like. The pictures I have represents how annoying school is with all of the projects and classwork, my fear of birds because I almost stepped on a dying one, how much I love to play video games, me liking to watch tv, me loving to dance, and me not liking to touch people I don’t know. The background I chose is of a black hole. I chose that because when I think about certain things, it disappears.  When I’m finished of thinking about it, sometimes it comes back. Everything that I dislike, I put at the top and turned to a 20 degree angle. I did that to act like it was going into the black hole. The things that I like, I put at the bottom.
