4/19 Bully (MOVIE) All 10th graders (all kids that play sports stay at school)

"Bullying takes place within a larger social context comprised of the relationships among students, teachers, administrators, and staff of the school as well as the members of the larger community.  These relationships contribute to the culture of the school and set the stage for the degree to which bullying situations are tolerated or taken on. BULLY shows the complexity of the community and culture surrounding any school  exemplified in the aftermath of Tyler Long’s suicide in Murray County, Georgia.  Five weeks after his death, Tyler’s parents organized a town hall meeting to bring their community together to talk about bullying."

Process Paper:

I picked my topic the Civil

Rights Movement, because I have learned many things about it over the years,

but I know there is a lot that I haven’t learned. I want to learn more about

three specific events, and they were: The Bus Boycott, The I Have A Dream Speech,

and The Assassination of MLK. I knew the basic stuff already, but I wanted to

dig down deeper into the situation so I did.

I checked many different

websites looking for new information, and I found some new things, but I wasn’t

satisfied. So I did something I never do, I read a book, the Rosa Parks

Biography. I learned some things from it; one really interesting thing was that the Boycott might have been set up. Rosa wasn’t the first person to get arrested for sitting in the front of a bus. It was a 16-year-old pregnant girl, I didn’t include this in my project, but it was new to me.

I made my articles like a regular

2fer from English class, but that wasn’t the way I was supposed to do it. I had

to make them like actual newspaper articles so I did. It was kind of hard for

me, but I did it to the best of my abilities.

Then I made my website. I tried to

put the events in order so people could travel through time on my website to

see what the civil right movement was like. I have pictures from each event on

each page. I feel that the website is good. The articles aren’t long, and

boring just about a page and a half for each category. I also have a video of

MLK making his I Have A Dream Speech. In the end I was somewhat proud of my website. It could have been better, but it is what I produced.

This is a video of the MLK I have a dream speech. I like this source because it not only give me a chance to see him give his speech, I get to see the crowds reaction to each every word he had to say. Everyone had good reaction. I first thought it was only blacks who attended the speech, but whites also attended.

MLK was arrested in Birmingham for leading the Civil Rights movement. He was set to lead a march, and the police would not allow it. He was spit on, and disrespected, and every other way. After all of that he was arrested. Very good picture, and background story.

The is a photo of MLK laying on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel after being shot by “James Earl Ray”. Jesse Jackson, and two other guys were around MLK when he was shot. I like this source because it shows me exactly where MLK was when he was shot, and it has the immediate reaction of the people who were around him.

This is the I have a dream speech in text. I read this before I watched the video just so I could know what MLK was saying, because during the video I was really paying attention to the reactions of people around him. This source is good because it has the whole speech, and now I know everything MLK said when he gave his speech. I like this source.

This is an article about the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and how it started. I feel like this source is good, because it digs deep down into the Bus Boycott. Rosa Parks was arrested, and Civil Rights Leaders such as MLK got into action, encouraged blacks not to ride public transportation. Very enjoyable source to read.

Q3 Art Work

This Q3 I didn't follow a lot of the assignments given but I did do work. This first picture Is a picture of me when I was younger and I first editted it on the computer and then used another resource to add extra graphics to it. I like my photo edits for this picture it gives it a vintage feel with a war effect.

This assign met I had to draw a picture of myself. We used mirrors in class to look at ourself while we drew the picture my indeed it was a challenge. I drew the picture picture from a side view because it would be a little easier. Drawing pictures of yourself is a little hard because you do't really know how to draw yourself as you see yourself. It is much easier to draw other people.

I this picture I drew a sunset with pastel. One day in art I wasn't really feeling the assignment given so I started to shaded colors together and before I knew it I had a sunset. I first started using shades of yellow and orange and drew a half circle in yellow, the shaded orange around it. Then I used shades of blue and green for water. Together this formed a warm sunset.
I this assignment we had to shade objects and I shaded an object I drew myself that I saw in my mind. So there are a series of rectangles around each other and I as I drew the shapes I began to shade. At first the shade was hard because you had to go from a hard shade to a soft shade ad sometime it was difficult to transition but as I did more It got much easier.

Q3 Advanced Art- Schiavoni, Natalee

Art Journal

For Q3 advanced art, I used a different style to bring most of my drawings to life. One of the artist tools that mainly are presented in my artwork is the use of pencil. I enjoy incorporating pencil into many of my drawings because I like to add shading and shadow textures. I love giving my drawings a more realistic feel so that my observers can actually get a taste of my art work and how I have improved over the last 1Q and 2Q. Overall I am very impressed with the styles I used and the progress that has come all this way from finishing all the artwork.

Self - portrait:

In this portrait that I have drawn of myself, I feel I could of done a better job at more of the shading aspect of the picture. I think there is room for improving this picture with more of the shadowing and shading around the eye area. The texture of the hair was my favorite part when I was creating this part of the portrait. I like giving things a texture and drawing it to seem realistic.

Photo on 4-17-12 at 9.17 PM

Texture Drawings:

Texture drawing is what I mainly progress in more of my detailed explanations about my drawings because it was a big part of the act of style I was incorporations into each of my drawings. In this picture I used a vase that I drew in order to show the process of shading and the use of shadowing. I like drawing still figures with good lighting because I am able to catch every aspect of angles to allow shading and shadowing.

Photo on 4-17-12 at 9.25 PM

Shading Practice:

Here are a few shading practice drawings that I have done to improve my shadowing and to allow the viewpoints of each of the different shading. My favorite part about shading in the different textures is blending in the final product.

Quarter 3 Art Blog

This quarter in Art I didn't decide to opt out of the class completely but I did skip over some assignments. In the beginning of the quarter I was going through some family issues so drawing wasn't the first thing on my mind. Instead, I chose to do the assignments that had to do with lots of color. I know art is an expression and I only wanted to express positive feelings and emotions. The first project I did was a color wheel. The color wheel consists of the primary colors, secondary colors, and tertiary colors. When I started, I had no clue what tertiary meant but once I started painting it all made sense. I used watercolors to paint my color wheel. At first, I thought I was doing the color wheel wrong because my colors didn't exactly match up to the ones I saw online but Ms. Hull informed me that you'll never get it to be perfect especially with the different textures you could use.

The second project I did was my own interpretation of the Primary Colors. There wasn't a real format of how we were supposed to do, it just had to include the 3 Primary colors. I decided to put the colors on the paper in the form of stripes. The basic premise of my project was to basically tell everyone that these are just the basics and the rest is up to you. I added up 2 of each of the primary as if I was doing math colors but I never showed the outcome. I want people to do what they want with the colors and mix them the way they want to and make whatever colors they choose. It's really all up to them. Art is about what you want it to be so I won't be the person to dictate your artistic expression.

This was the most challenging quarter for me but the work I've completed makes me proud despite everything I've recently gone through.

Charles Norman Dayona McNeil PSSA Project Ecosystems.

Ecosystems
What Is A Ecosystem?
A ecosystem is a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment.

What Kinds Of Ecosystems are there?

There are three types of major ecosystems:
1. Freshwater Ecosystems
2. Ocean Ecosystems
3. Terrestrial Ecosystems

What do ecosystems consist of?

An ecosystem consists of the biological and physical environment of an area. The biological environment is made up of all living organisms in the area. The physical environment includes the air, the earth, water, and the weather. All these biological and physical factors interact within the ecosystem. They compose a network of complex relationships that control population growth. Each plant and animal species has a role or way of life within the ecosystem. This is called its niche.

Tundra - The climate is extremely cold, dry, and the subsoil is permanently frozen. Plants these include lichens, low shrubs, and sedges. Some of the animals there are the Arctic fox, lemmings, polar bear, caribou, wolves, and many migratory birds.

Boreal Forest - The climate has cold winters, and a short growing season. Coniferous evergreen trees, chiefly balsam fir, black spruce, jack pine, and white spruce are plants you would find there. Animals include bears, wolves, moose, ducks, and loons.

Temperate Coniferous Forest - Has cool, middle and upper mountain slopes, coastal areas with mild winters and heavy rainfall. Coniferous evergreen trees, including cedar, hemlock, pine, and redwood are among the plant life. Bears, elk, mountain lions, and wolves are animals in the region.

Temperate Deciduous Forest - Cold winters, warm summers, moist. Broadleaf deciduous trees such as elm, maple, and oak. Animals there are deer, raccoons, squirrels, and many kinds of small birds.

Chaparral - Climate includes rain, mild winters, hot and dry summers, fires are common in this area. Plant life includes low shrubs with small and hard leaves. Coyotes, mule deer, and many species of lizards are animals in the region.

Desert - Extremely dry. Cati and other fleshy plants, sparse grasses, and small-leaved shrubs. This region also has lizards, snakes, many small rodents.

Grassland - Temperate, subhumid. Grasses and other herbaceous plants.
Antelope, pronghorn bison, buffaloes, wolves, and coyotes live in the area.

Savanna - Long dry season. Grasses and scattered clumps of trees. Giraffes, zebras, jackals, and lions live in the region.

Tropical RainForest - Warm and wet all year. Broadleaf evergreen trees, some palms and tree ferns, and climbing vines. Animals include bats, colorful birds, lizards, monkeys, and snakes.

PSSA EXAMPLE QUESTIONS

1. How many different major types of ecosystems are there? What are the major ecosystems?

2. What do ecosystems consist of?

3. What is the climate like in a tropical rain forrest?

4. What does the Savanna ecosystem consist of?

5. What is a ecosystem?

Raekwon's Monster Blast Powers SLA to Walk-Off Victory

Fresh off handily beating their arch rival and divisional nemesis Randolph for the first time last week by a final count of 14-4, SLA Baseball stepped foot onto some unlikely hallowed ground at  35th and Oxford  Fairmount Park. In the final game of the 2011 season the Rockets were heavy underdogs against a strong Strawberry Mansion team. But SLA was surging as well in recent "must win" games, and crushing Freire 16-1 in just 3 innings of no-hit ball by All-Star senior Brandon Williams helped set up the "win and you're in" contest. In the end, that game- a nail-biting, see-saw, war of attrition- ended in dramatic fashion with Williams forcing Mansion's best hitter to pop up with the based loaded to secure the 14-12 victory. The win gave SLA an 8-4 overall record, completing a lightning-quick turnaround from the previous 4-8 inaugural campaign, and shockingly propelled SLA into the city playoffs for the first time in school history. Had they lost the game they would have been knocked out by way of head-to-head tie breaker with their bitter rival Randolph, but in beating Mansion they leap frogged them and secured the #2 seed in the playoffs. That team would go onto hold toe-to-toe with the Philadelphia Charter Academy, a B Division powerhouse with a stacked lineup- for five innings before finally relenting. The season ended, but the magic was just beginning. While SLA lost a talented core of seniors- namely John Desalis, Marshall Johnston, Anthony Seeley and Brandon Williams- the team retained it's young core of underclassmen who played pivotal roles in creating a team that believed in itself.  CLICK HERE FOR FULL STORY

Raekwon's MONSTER Blast Powers SLA to Walk-Off Victory!

Fresh off handily beating their arch rival and divisional nemesis Randolph for the first time last week by a final count of 14-4, SLA Baseball stepped foot onto some unlikely hallowed ground at  35th and Oxford in Fairmount Park. In the final game of the 2011 season the Rockets were heavy underdogsagainst a strong Strawberry Mansion team. But SLA was surging as well in recent "must win" games, and crushing Freire 16-1 in just 3 innings of no-hit ball by All-Star senior Brandon Williams helped set up the "win and you're in" contest. In the end, that game- a nail-biting, see saw, war of attrition- ended in dramatic fashion with Williams forcing Mansion's best hitter to pop up with the based loaded to secure the 14-12 victory.

While the seniors are gone, some now playing in college, the spirit and heart of the team is very much intact, and as the team stepped onto the fresh dirt of their greatest triumph the veterans of that war felt something in the air. The weather was almost exactly the same, the field seemingly untouched since they danced around Brandon on the mound and ritualistically drenched their coach with the water bucket. The implications were also nearly identical. SLA is 2-2 this year, but their record does not reflect the calibre of a team that should be 4-0. More importantly this game, against a very different opponent in University City, was still seen as a "must win" for SLA considering the difficulty of their remaining schedule.

SLA finds itself in the opposite end of the equation having beaten University City in each of its previous three meetings. While the games themselves have never been close, the air most assuredly has. On numerous occasions the players for UC have verbally and physically threatened SLA players, deliberately thrown at our batters' heads, and have tripped us on the base paths. SLA was expecting the game to be ugly, but their coach made it clear that the ugliness must be one-sided. "They are going to try to get into your heads because they know you are better than them. It is a tactic of compensation. Do not give into them. Do not let them get us into a position where we beat ourselves. Remember that this is a very mental game. Think of their insults like clouds and let them float by".

From the outset it was clear this game would be tense, but SLA is used to that especially on this field. The see saw would swing back and forth, but SLA stayed true to the team mantra of "win the inning", and every time University City would put a run on the board, in fact never more than two in an inning, SLA responded to take the frame. SLA did remarkably well with two outs, and proved to be a very difficult team to put away. For instance, with two outs in the bottom of the first Ian McClendon ripped a shot to third that was too hot to handle. Jeff Schwartz followed suit and quickly SLA had runners on the corners in time for Nick Manton's rip to center to drive them both home and tie the game. SLA scored two more to take a 4-3 lead in the second in similar fashion. After TJ Nicolella led off with a single and reached second on a throwing error, Ethan Reese bunted him over and beat out the throw to first. Nicolella would score on the ensuing throwing error by U.C.'s pitcher and Reese would come around to score on Jhonas Dunakin's rip down the first-base line. Two outs, no problem.

While this speaks volumes of SLA's composure and how quick they can manufacture runs seemingly out of nowhere, the most impressive aspect of their game has been their defense. Setting a record in a Public League game, SLA recorded six put outs on the base paths including a double play where Ethan Reese faked a throw to second long enough to bait the runner on third to try and go home. Reese spun around and shot a laser beam home in enough time to nail a sliding runner and for Jeff Schwartz to match Reese's throw to third to Raekwon Smith who applied the tag on U.C.'s dumbfounded clutch hitter. While U.C. was most definitely not disciplined on the base paths, which undid a couple of monster triples by their better hitters, SLA displayed the opposite type of presence on the bases. Tallying nine steals, including Jeff Schwartz's swipe of home in the third, SLA also simply worked the bases like professionals and turned every miscue U.C.'s defense made into runs.

However, for all their mistakes on both sides of the ball, University City tied the game at 5 in the 4th. However, once again SLA responded and won the inning to take a 7-5 lead off with three consecutive singles and another 2 two-out double by Ian McClendon. It seemed the see saw would never stop tilting back and forth though as U.C. tied it back up at 7 and eventually took an 8-7 lead going into the 6th. It could have been much worse considering U.C. had the bases loaded off of walks in the 5th, but once again SLA's defense rose to the occasion catching an undisciplined runner on his way home and another in a run down at second. With the game tied and the bases loaded U.C.'s best hitter was up. He had already ripped a triple to left, but was caught at home on the double put-out in the 2nd. Ian McClendon came in as the closer and did just that by striking him out on a mixture of pitches, the last of which was smoked right by Rivers.

SLA tied it up in the 6th after Stephen Smith ripped one too hot for their center fielder to hold. Smith came around to tie the game when Reese's hot bat struck for the third time with another bullet right back at center. 8-8 after six with just one inning of regulation to go. McClendon confidently took the mound knowing that holding them here would mean SLA could "win the inning" and walk off with a victory. After a battle of an at-bat, U.C.'s Griffin worked a lead-off walk and then quickly stole second to represent the go-ahead run. What followed was yet another example of the professional composure SLA displayed all day. McClendon struck out the next two batters looking, and when he was in a jam with their number 2 hitter Rivers, he made the ultimate pick-off spin back to second and caught Griffin for the record setting 6th put out. Still 8-8. With the middle of the order coming up, SLA could just smell the win.

Coach's orders were simple, "just get into scoring position", but Morel, who was still on the mound for U.C. had other ideas. The advantage seemed to swing to U.C. after Morel got Schwartz to pop up to short and lightning-quick Henry Poeng, who had come in to replace an injured Nick Manton, fell behind in the count. Henry owned the box though and got plunked on the wrist when Morel tried to motor one in on the hands. Seconds later Poeng was on third representing the winning run when Raekwon Smith stepped to the plate. Rae had struggled with timing throughout the game, and it seemed the same was unfolding as he quickly fell behind 0-2 in the count. Morel, who had struck him out three times prior in the game, smiled and went for the kill by powering a fastball right down the pipe, but Rae loaded his hands and stepped into the ball with ease. The ball simply disappeared into the crystal blue sky. As SLA's bench cleared to mob Henry as he crossed the plate, Rae simply stared off at his majestic shot wondering if it would ever arc back down to earth.

Some silly drama ensued when the bench collectively snapped Raekwon out of his self-induced day dream in time to get him to actually run to first base to make it official. Although he robbed himself of his own Home Run trot, the soft, endearing smile on his face merely hinted at how pleased he was with himself. While players joked about how bad they felt for the outfielder having to go all the way to New Jersey to retrieve the ball, it most definitely went over 350ft and therefore would have been a Home Run in Citizens Bank Park. Impressive for a freshman's first extra-base hit of the season. Perhaps Jeff Schwartz, who was a pivotal rookie in the 2011 playoff run, said it best after the team had doused their coach with the water bucket. As he gathered his catcher's gear and helped clean up the dugout, he was overheard satisfyingly mumbling to himself, "something magical always happens on this field." Magical indeed.
