Adolescents, Crime and Brain Development

Posted by Angelica Owens in Science And Society - Best - E on Tuesday, June 7, 2016 at 1:51 pm

For the people who believe that adolescents should be punished when committed a crime,

My name is Charlotte and I am a teenager who robbed and brutally beat an old lady with my friend Emily. I know you think that I should go to prison for this crime but I am here to tell you all of the many reasons why I should not go to jail. For one, our brains have weak breaks. If we see something that intrigues us enough than we go after it. Our reward system is very aroused hehe. Very aroused I said. The braking system to make sure we don’t follow the leader with our negative decisions is turned off at that time. Also, we are more likely to take more risks with our friends. There was a study done at Temple Hospital where when people played games without their friends, they don’t play it differently than any other adult. A student mentioned that by even knowing their friend is watching them, it doubles the number of risks we take but if we look at adults, playing with friends has no impact on their behavior. Let’s not forgot that the behavior-governing prefrontal cortex is morphing. This part of my brain isn’t even developed yet. It is still in the stages of developing correctly so that I make the right decisions and not do idiotic things….just like this situation. Another important factor is adults. Adults guidance makes a huge difference so that we don’t follow the wrong crowd. My mother wasn’t active in my life at all. I barely knew her so I didn’t have the skills to think good enough so that I wouldn’t make negative decisions. By having a parent in your life, you are more willing to do positive things instead of doing risky behaviors. In a case called Atkins v. Virginia, it banned the execution of mentally retarded people so if that was an option, that’s now illegal. What about our hormonal changes?? Being an adolescent, we undergo many emotional and hormonal changes. One of the hormones that has the most effect on our body is testosterone. Emotionally, an adolescent is part child and part adult. Not only that but my father was also abusive which is why I committed this crime. All I know is violence. Research studies shows that abusive childhood experiences can cause violent behaviors. Some situations that can trigger it is being a witness to domestic violence or substance abuse with the family, and also being the victim of physical or sexual assault. This is the reason why I committed the crime that I did. Myself was not only physically abused by my father but I was also bullied in school. I would do one thing wrong, like forget to do the dishes one time and the next thing I knew, my face was being slapped or I got pushed down to the floor. When I was at school, people would call me words like ugly, worthless and fat albert. This is my case as to why I should not receive jail time and walk a free woman.

Sincerely,

Charlotte

Podcast 2- 3,4,5 and 6 - 6:3:16, 9.31 PM
People: Tamira and Angelica
We discussed chapters 3,4,5 and 6. In chapter 3, we discussed the cavities lower with the doakes toothpaste and the tests they did with the pennies. For chapter 4, we discussed about peter and linda different IQ scores and how they think if they have a higher IQ, they are smaller but if it is lower they are retarded. We also discussed the different sampling methods and their outlooks on that. For chapter 5, we talked about the gee wiz graph and the way it is drawn and what it means. For chapter 6, we discussed the pictoral chart.

How we discussed them was by summarizing each chapter and then picking out what we think was the most important points or just certain things we liked in the chapter. We didn't have any conflicts during the piece and also did not have any questions either.

Angelica Owens 5 minutes of Science- Dementia

Posted by Angelica Owens in Science And Society - Best - E on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at 3:36 pm

For my project, I focused on Dementia. Dementia is a disorder that causes you to lose your memory. When you have dementia, the cortex shrivels up and that damages the areas involved in thinking, planning and remembering. Shrinkage increases in the hippocampus which is an area that works on creating new memories and the ventricles grow larger. The symptoms are loss of memory, hard time communicating and language, the ability to focus and pay attention, reasoning and judgement and visual perception. To diagnose it, doctors do physical examination, careful medication history, lab tests, characteristics changes in history, day-to-day function and behavioral associated with each type.

For Society, A lot of people can be diagnosed with it under 65 years old,  other terms are “early onset dementia”, “young onset dementia” and “working age dementia”. In the U.S, 5 million are reported to have age related dementia and in Louisiana about 100,000 have it. 1 in 6 women and 1 in 10 who live past 55 will develop dementia in their lifetime. People with often have to have a care provider since they can’t take of themselves.

For Self, I chose to do this project because my grandmother had it for a while. She was declining rapidly. I don’t like this because there were times where my grandmother didn’t even know who I was and kept asking who I was. I would see her struggle to remember things and to try to take care of her. Two of my great aunt’s, my grandmother sisters have it too so I wanted to find out if it is genetic.

Angelica Owens Capstone

Abstract:

For my capstone project, I self-published a poetry book. With this project, I got in contact with a publishing company and started the process. I started a document with the poetry I wanted to be in it. I put them in order and put the table in contents so the publisher knew what poem to put where even though I put the poems in order on the document too. I emailed it to him and he kept in touch with me. I asked Amanda to do my cover because I heard she was a good artist and I told her the vision I had for it. After I received the books, I had a book release party at school where my family, friends and my two nurses who took care of me at Temple came since I am donating the money to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Temple as well. During the process, I learned how important it was to keep tabs with people who are putting together my product. It was very stressful at times because the publisher would be out of town a lot and not email me back and it was getting closer to when I wanted to have my book release party. I also learned how many people are supportive and think I am going places with my writing as well and how to plan an event since I planned it mainly by myself.

Annotated Bibliography:

Beck, Allison. "25 Best Party Foods Your Guests Will Love." The Daily Meal. N.p., 31 Oct. 2011. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.

This source talks about what makes food good for parties. It states that if people will be standing up, make sure it is not too greasy and also make it look appetizing as well. I selected this source because it will help me figure out what I should and shouldn’t be looking for or doing when it comes to appetizers for the event. This source is useful because now I know what to do and what’s best for the event when it comes to food so people don’t make too much of a mess. A limitation of this source is that they don’t have a everyday list of appetizers, they only have like fancy ones and some people are very picky and don’t like everything.

Ben-Ari, Elia T. "Special Book Article: Electronic Publishing: Past, Present, and Future." BioScience 49.3 (1999): 229. Web.

This source talks about electronic publishing in the past, present and future. It talks about how things posted online can be easily updated which is a good and bad thing. If it can be updated, you can choose different things but at the same time, you can keep it the same way if you choose to. I selected this source because it gave me a look into the cons of publishing something online which will be half of what I do since I am publishing an online version and hard copy of it. A limitation of the source is that it doesn’t talk about the pros of publishing online.

What Is a Chapbook. Dir. Christopher Brown. Perf. Christopher K.P Brown. 2011. Web.

This source was created by Christopher “K.P.” Brown. It describes what a chapbook is along with the what they expecting, and the basics of their process for the book. I selected this source because I didn’t know what kind of poetry book I wanted to publish. When I found the publisher, on the site, he was talking about a chapbook, which I had never heard of it. By looking at this source I found out it was a small collection of poetry which could be about a maximum of about 28 poems. This source helped me figure out the kind of book I wanted to do. While I have tons of poems, there are a lot that are touching on subjects I would not put in my book well not my first book. A limitation of the book was the price it would cost for a couple of 100 books and if you wanted extra, how much extra would it cost. That would have been helpful so I wouldn’t have even had to email him first about the price along with telling him I was interested in publishing through them.

Doskow, Minna. William Blake's Jerusalem: Structure and Meaning in Poetry and Picture. Rutherford: Fairleigh Dickinson UP, 1982. Print.

This source was created by Minna Doskow and talks about Jerusalem and their interpretation of poetry. In this book, they talk about poetry and their set up of it. This source says that with a poetry book you could have different themes for the poetry. This source is useful because I was thinking of doing themes for my poetry book until I decided that would be messy and mess up the flow I wanted to have with the book. One limitation this source has is not to describe other ways someone could set up a poetry book.

Giovanni, Nikki. "Mothers." Poetry Foundation. Poetry Foundation, n.d. Web. 02 Feb. 2016. <http://www.poetryfoundation.org/poem/177837>

This source gives a poem by Nikki Giovanni, a well known poet. In the poem, she speaks about her mother, the last time she went home and her mother passed a poem to her. I selected this source because it reminds me of a poem I wrote for my grandmother in the way I worded it and not so much of the situations are connected. I find this source useful because it shows how I want to change the world with my words but also shows that my poems in the book are talking about real things in my life, good or bad and that they will be coming from the heart. One limitation of the source is that while it is a good poem, I won’t be able to model my work off her because I already sent my poems off.

Hunter, Maya Angelou - Poem. "Still I Rise Poem." Poemhunter.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2016. <http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/still-i-rise/>.

This source gives me a poem entitled “Still I rise” by Maya Angelou. I selected this poem because this is my favorite poem by her and by being a huge fan of her, she helped me start writing poetry. This poem is part of the reason why I am who I am when it comes to how I write. It is speaking real situations that has happened but saying that she could care less which is what I strive to do in my writing. This source is useful because it can show the audience why I choose to write and what I want to get across in my book that people are different and to respect their differences but also having a theme of family as well.

Hunter, Langston Hughes - Poem. "As I Grew Older Poem." Poemhunter.com. N.p., n.d. Web. 05 Feb. 2016.

This source is a poem by Langston Hughes entitled “As I Grew Older.”  This poem talks about his dream and how he could see it like the sun. I chose this source because it talks about his dreams and how determined he is to follow his dreams which very much reminds me of me and the whole purpose of my book release party which is to get my work published to start my career. This source is useful because it can show people the path of where I want to go and where I want my future to go.

Matthews, Curt. "Self-Publishing Success." American Libraries 43.5/6 (2012): 12. JSTOR. Web. 03 Feb. 2016.

This source talks about how self-published books be successful. It states that it’s all about how you market your book. If you market to more places and make it known that you published a book, it will be more successful. It also stated that if you publish it more than one place than people will be more likely to buy it because they have an option to purchase it online or in person. I selected this source because it can give me an insight into what to do in order to be successful. It reassured me that I am going down the right path. I am planning on publishing my book on Amazon for people who I don’t know that want to buy it randomly or if my family and friends can’t make it to my book release party. I find this source useful because it showed me I am going on the right path to make my book successful. A limitation this source has is that it doesn’t tell the average price that we should sell our books for to be successful.

"The Meaning of Poetry: Breaking Poetry." YouTube. YouTube, n.d. Web. 04 Feb. 2016. <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6QToz8zYuU>.

This source is talking about the meaning of poetry and what poetry means for the particular speaker and just in general the meaning of people for certain people.  I selected this source as a way showing that the meaning of poetry is more than just writing stuff down but that writing poetry is an escape gateway for people and a way to express their feelings. I find this source useful because this describes my usage of poetry and the reason why I write. A limitation of this source is that it doesn’t speak more on why people who write don’t have a connection with their writing.

Free Verse. Digital image. Slide Share- All about Poetry. Natasha Walker Van Niekerk, 6 Mar. 2014. Web. 4 Feb. 2016.

This source was found on Google Images under it saying “Free Verse.” While going to the sight investigating it, I found out not only Free verse is majority of what my poetry book is but also that a couple of  my poetry is called Narrative poems which is just me narrating through a poem. This source is useful so I can identify the types of poems that are in the book which I didn’t know all of the kinds at first. I selected this source because it helped me to figure out the names of type of poetry used in the book so I knew.

Posted by Angelica Owens in Reading, Writing And Rising Up - Block - B on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at 11:26 am
Hi. My name is Angelica Owens and I am a senior at Science Leadership Academy, My goals for this radio piece was to help teenagers who are struggling with loving themselves by interviewing my two friends who both have two different backgrounds. I wanted to try to encourage people to have self love because I struggled with that in the past and it has impacted my life. I still struggle with not loving myself and I don’t want anyone else to have to go through that.

The father has control or does he?

Posted by Angelica Owens in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 7:30 pm

Comparing “The taming of the Shrew” to “Peeples”

Fathers normally have control of their daughters relationships because fathers are so overprotective of their daughters. In the play “The Taming of The Shrew”, Baptista has full control of the relationship. Some suitors want to have Bianca but he won’t let them have her until the eldest daughter, Katherine, is married. After that he makes sure Katherine is married so Bianca can have a husband too. In the movie “Peeples”, Grace who is played by Kerry Washington goes to see her family but leaves her boyfriend, Wade, home. Her boyfriend comes to her hometown anyway, only to find out Grace hasn’t told her parents that she is dating anyone. Her father doesn’t like her boyfriend because he thinks that he isn’t serious about his daughter enough to marry her even though secretly, he came there to propose to his daughter.

The difference between these two texts shows how fathers are overprotective of their daughters. They want to have control over their daughters relationships in order to make it seem like they are the boss and are in charge of what happens to their daughters life. Years ago, men who wanted to be in relationships went to the father in order to have access to the daughter. In modern times, a father tries to put fear into the guy who wants his daughter so that he will be the guy that he wants the guy to be.

“That is not to bestow my youngest daughter, before I have a husband for the elder.”

(Act 1, Scene 1, lines 50-51)

In this scene, Baptista has control of the relationship. The suitors want to be with Bianca but in order for them to do that, the eldest sister Katherine has to get married first. Baptista has complete control over the relationship. Gremio came to Baptista to tell him that he wanted to be with his daughter but it didn’t work out that way. Instead, he mentioned that Bianca had to wait until her oldest sister weds symbolizing that he has the power and control over their relationships and what happens in their life when it comes to love and who to be with.

Fathers tend to have an impact on their daughters relationships even when they aren’t physically there.

20150416_205510.jpg

In this scene of the movie, Grace and Wade are having a discussion about him not going to her parents house so she leaves him at their house. During this conversation, Wade says to Grace “This is about your father. You empower him. You are a lawyer with the United Nations but you need a permission slip signed by daddy so I can be your man.” Grace is afraid to have Wade meet her parents but in particular, her father. This quote proves that her father still has control over her relationships. She says in the movie, it has nothing to do with her father but if it did not, she would have been introduced him to her parents. Grace’s father still has power over her relationships which could be a good and bad thing. In the scene, Grace’s father has a power over their relationship that is present without him being physically there. In the book, “The Taming of the Shrew”, Baptista has a power over both of his daughters by forcing one to get married so that the guys would desire Bianca can have her.

“On Sunday next you know, my daughter Katherine is to be married. Now on the Sunday following, shall Bianca be bride to you, if you make this assurance”

(Act 2, Scene 1, Lines 415-418)

As Gremio and Tranio are discussing who has more to offer to Bianca to get her love, Baptista stops the gentlemen in their tracks when he says “on Sunday next you know, my daughter Katherine is to be married. Now on the Sunday following, shall Bianca be bride to you, if you make this assurance.” Baptista in this quote, tells the guys if they can get Katherine to be married than one of them can have the key to Bianca’s heart. Baptista is again using his power to his advantage. He is making a point that he has the power in his daughter’s relationships. The guy went to approval to marry the girl but the father has the control of the relationship. Baptista is using this to control not only his daughters but the men as well. If he thinks they don’t offer a lot of financial stability for if they die, then they won’t be with his daughters. Baptista likes to be in control of his daughters relationship and he will remind his children that he is the one in control of them.

20150416_205532.jpg

At this point, Grace’s boyfriend, Wade is having a meeting with her father and her grandfather. Things seem to be going pretty well but things make a 360 when Wade says that him and Grace are just “kicking it” when her father asks what is his plans for the future. After that occured, her grandfather said “I suppose a man has to decide when he wants to stand up and be a man.” This quote shows how important it is for a man to want to marry a female and not play around with females feelings and the relationship. While her grandfather was putting a lot of pressure on Wade at that moment, Wade appreciated it. It made him determined to show how much he loved Grace to ask for her hand in marriage at that moment. Her grandfather also has control over her relationship because by saying that it put fear into wade. Grace reassured Wade that he was a man so that ended that. Her grandfather expectations of Wade is to be a man which consists of marrying Grace and to not be so childish. He has the expectation for Grace to be with a guy who has goals for their future and not someone who isn’t serious about commitment. Not only fathers but grandfathers want to have control of the daughter/granddaughters relationship so much that they make a comment on everything. Her grandfather put fear into him so that he will be who he wants him to be. By him saying that to Wade, it made Wade try harder to be perfect for her family so that he can marry Grace and spend the rest of his life with her like he planned.

“Doth watch Bianca’s steps so narrowly, Twere good, methinks, to steal our marriage, which, once performed, let all the world say no, I’ll keep mine own despite of all the world.”

(Act 3, scene 2, lines 141-144)

In this scene, Lucentio is talking to Tranio about getting Bianca’s love and the haters that may occur if they be together. Tranio states that Bianca fathers approves the relationship his daughter gets into. Lucentio on the other hand, is not letting Baptista ruin his life so he doesn’t care. He will do anything to get Bianca to be his wife. Even when the world doesn’t think they would work out together, he doesn’t care because at the end of the day, he will fight for what he wants. In this case, Baptista doesn’t have any control over the relationship because Lucentio is willing to do anything to get what he wants. Baptista has very clear expectations of who his daughters should be with. The guy who offers her the most financial stability so she doesn’t have to worry about anything. He has this expectation that the guys Bianca should be with should be perfect.  Wade and Lucentio are somewhat similar. They both fight for what they believe in. Wade was told not to go to her hometown to meet her family but he did anyway and tried to make her family like him. He did things he thought her father would like to meet the fathers expectations. Lucentio doesn’t care about what people thinks because he will still get the girl that he wants at the end and he will continue to get what is his regardless of what the father thinks.

Fathers do not have control in this case but in most cases they do.

20150416_205544.jpg

After Wade told Grace’s father that they had not had any wedding plans yet, Judge Peeples said to him  “I want my daughters to know what its like to be with someone who has the conviction to plan a future and not someone who just wants to kick it.” When her father said that to Wade, it put fear into Wade as to who was in control of the relationship. The father in this case, puts his input as to what he expects out of relationships for his daughter and if the guy who they are dating does not fufill his requirement then they aren’t the one for his daughters. Even though Grace will still be with Wade regardless of what her father says about him, her father still wants to let Wade know there will be consequences if he hurts her. This scene sounds like Baptista in the book “Taming of the shrew”. Grace’s father and Baptista are both demanding certain qualities for their daughters partners. They are both giving the guys who want their daughters expectations for what they should be like in order to get their daughter. Grace’s father and her grandfather actually cares about Grace while Baptista only wants Katherine to get married so he can get her out of the way so his favorite daughter, Bianca to get married.

Grace’s father expects Wade to want to commit to marriage if they are together and not someone who

The taming of the shrew and Peeples both dealt with Parents expectations on the relationship. In the peeples, Grace’s father cares about Grace and her relationship with Wade but expects a lot out of him. It was already enough for him to pop up at their house unexpectedly but now, he has to prove to her father why he deserves to be with his daughter and to marry her. The whole trip pressured Wade to be more than her father thought he would be and expected him to be. He broke his neck trying to be so “perfect” for Grace’s father, he didn’t take time to reflect on what he is offering Grace now and if it is good enough for her father. Mr. Peeples is an overprotective father. In Taming of the shrew, Baptista doesn’t care about Katherine’s happiness, just Bianca’s. Baptista has expectations on the guys as well but in a different way. Sometimes fathers can be very overprotective but sometimes fathers just want their children to get married so they can live their life. It’s not all about overprotective fathers but more so their expectations for the men who want to pursue their daughters and if they are “good” enough for their daughters. This shows that overtime, fathers expectations of the daughters boyfriend hasn’t really changed but the impact it has on the relationship and the impact on the guy it has, is important. Our attitude towards dating can be preserved that the fathers rule the relationship and had control of the men. Fathers are the one that makes the rules and challenges the men goals and aspirations of the relationship.

Angelica Owens- "The things they carried" Benchmark

Posted by Angelica Owens in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at 5:25 pm

Analytical Essay:

Once trust gets broken, it is hard for it to be repaired. Trusting people with too many things is where people in the society goes wrong. In the book “The things they carried”, Tim O’Brien talks about trusting people. At times, O’Brien trusted people that he originally didn’t get along with or people that he really liked. Once you learn to trust someone you will be more open to facing obstacles.

Enemies can become friends, all it takes is to think positive and learn to trust them. With Dave Jensen and Lee Strunk, this happened for their relationship. They started out as enemies but it didn’t stay like this. “They did learn to trust each other. Over the next month, they teamed up on ambushes. They covered each other on patrol, shared a fox-hole and took turns pulling guard at night (O’Brien; page 65).” At first Jensen and Strunk didn’t start off as friends but that all changed. They built a level of trust for each other that showed they could face certain obstacles together. When they were enemies without trust, they wouldn’t have done those things with each other but with trust building, they were able to take risks by doing those things for each other.

When love is a factor with someone, you trust them with a lot of things and that’s what happened with Cross and Martha. On the first page of the book, O’Brien says that “more than anything he wanted her to love him as he loved her, but the letters were mainly chatty, elusive on the matter of love.” Cross trusted Martha with things that he never did with anyone. He trusted her to love him and by trusting her to do that, he was facing obstacles. He faced the possibility of her not loving him as he wanted her to love him.

Writing things on paper can help remember the trust that was built between two people. That is what Jensen and Strunk did. On page 65, “they drew it up on paper, signing their names and asking a couple of guys to act as witnesses (O’Brien).” The trust they built was reconfirmed by writing it on paper for one another. Once they trusted each other, they wrote it down on paper so that they knew they really trusted each other. Before building trust, Jensen and Strunk wouldn’t have asked guys to act as witnesses which they took the risk of facing that obstacle.

In Tim O’Brien’s shock of being drafted, he explains how he felt and how he reacted when he heard he was drafted into the war, which wasn’t a good reaction. He stated that he pounded on the typewriter when he heard it. He also said that “It was the most terrible summer of my life, worse than being in the war. My conscience kept telling me not to go, but my whole upbringing told me I had to.”  While O’Brien was scared of being drafted, he decided to follow his mind and trust his conscience. They say follow your conscience because it will never let anyone down but in his case, he followed what he was brought up to do. That told him he had to go so he went and hoped for the best. He trusted that he would be safe. By doing that, he was open to facing more obstacles. Once he said he was going to go, there is no turning back which caused him to take risks and face every obstacle that there was so that he could get home safe.

Narrative Essay:

“Trust is like a mirror. Once it’s broken it’s never seen the same again & no matter how much you try to put it back together, the cracks will always show.” said Ms. Bickley, my 8th grade writing teacher wrote on the chalkboard

In Middle School, I had a bad tendency of trusting people and them constantly letting me down so I stopped trusting people. I realized I had to trust people because trusting is the key to everything. If someone lets you down then that’s their fault. I started the school in 6th grade but my best friends until this day Salia and Kayla started the school in 7th grade. I had a guard up and didn’t want to trust them with anything or any of my business. Eventually we had a deep conversation and I told them everything about me. All the faults I think I have and all the positive things and they disagreed. The point that I will remember most is when I came out to them about my sexuality in 8th grade, they didn’t tell a soul. They were two people that I remember when I said “keep it as a secret,” they kept it as a secret while I told other people and when I told them that they went around and told the whole grade about me. People started looking at me strange and made rumors about me at that same time but I knew then I could trust them with everything and if I told them not to tell anyone, they wouldn’t tell anyone and I can trust them.  Before this experience I had trust issues in ways but I still thought the people I called my friends would never let me down. Most of them did prove me wrong. Luckily, after this incident happened I knew who I could trust and most the people that went around school telling people were not on my list of trustworthy people. Going into Middle School as one of the only people who didn’t know anyone, I had a lot of hopes that I would be able to trust more people and it took me all of my middle school career to learn that I couldn’t trust everyone. Even when I came into High School, I still had problems with trusting the wrong people but as I started growing into my High School career, I learned once again I can’t trust everybody and how many times people let me down. Now, I am very careful in who I trust because so many people have let me down in the past and I don’t want to go through that again. Having close people in my life that I know 100 percent that I can trust has made me be more open minded of things and that if I need to talk to someone I can always count on them to be by my side. Learning how to trust people has made me more open to facing obstacles because even though numerous people have let me down, I still try to trust other people so that they can prove to me if I should trust them in the future.

Teenagers identity stripped away

Posted by Angelica Owens in English 3 - Pahomov - D on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at 5:09 pm
Whether listening or playing an instrument, music is an outlet for teenagers to get feelings off of their chest. Teenagers today go through so many obstacles such as self harm and rape and sometimes they need a getaway escape. Self expression is very important when it comes to teenagers because now a days everyone wants to “fit in” and be apart of the crowd. Since teenagers want to fit it, they struggle with being themselves which mutes their voices. Music is a source of inspiration and a voice for teenagers who feels as though their identity has been stripped away by traumatic experiences.

As a teenager, the now singer Demi Lovato used to self harm and as a result she uses her experiences with self harm as a base for her songs. She has  numerous songs about her being depressed and self harming. One of her most famous songs “Skyscraper” tells a powerful story. In the song lyrics, she says “Would it make you feel better to watch me bleed? All my windows are still broken but i’m standing on my feet”. Demi is using her past experiences as a teenager to portray the hurt and pain she has been through. Another part of the song that is used in the chorus of the song “you can take everything I have, You can break everything I am, like i’m made of glass, like I’m made of paper, Go on and try to tear me down, I will be rising from the ground, Like a skyscraper”. This is one of the most powerful parts in the whole song. She is trying to encourage teenagers that the situations they may be going through are just temporary and that they will eventually get through. When the music artists puts out talks about their personal experiences, it gives teenagers a place to go if they are going through something.

Another singer that tells powerful stories in her music is Pink. While singing Pink’s “perfect” on America’s got talent, 14 years old Mara Justine shedded tears during it. When she sung the chorus “Pretty pretty please don’t you ever ever feel like you're less than, less than perfect”, she had a lot of passion. The passion that Mara shows is that there was a deeper meaning to why she chose that particular song. When the audience looked in her eyes, they saw the tears run down her face. Teenagers tend to choose songs based on their feelings at the moment and since they are discovering themselves, the moments don’t last long.

The group, My Chemical Romance tells different stories in a variety of ways. One of their songs “I’m not okay” talks about people giving them dirty looks for who they are. Some of the lyrics to the song are “I’m not okay, I’m not okay I promise, To be a joke and look, forget about the dirty looks, you said you read me like a book but the pages all are torn and frayed”. These lyrics are indicating that no one is perfect and the dirty looks you give people can come off as something else. It’s saying that people will make fun of you and stare at you but you know who you are and that you can tell if I am okay but in reality, I’m not that important to you because I am ripped and hurting inside and no one can see that. This is important because the way you act around people can tell them everything they need to know. You never know what someone is going through so don’t treat them any different than how you would want to be treated. If you have music to push you through those tough times, it is easier to handle those things.

In today’s society homosexuality is a huge topic, especially with teenagers. Homosexuals in society now a days do not have much of a voice. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis has a song entitled “Same love” that is to show that is okay to like the same sex and to be proud of that. In the song he says “you can be cured with some treatment and religion….god loves all his children is somehow forgotten but we paraphrase a book that was written 35 hundred years ago”. In the bible it is to be thought that homosexuality is a sin. Because of what the bible says about Adam being made for Eve and not Adam and Steve homosexuals especially in the christian religion feel as though they have to be quiet about their liking of the same sex. Societies views of homosexuality in a way that homosexuals are not equal and they feel as though they are an outcast. Being an outcast, homosexuals learn to separate themselves from certain people who do not accept them and they express themselves freely. Homosexuals uses this song as a way to speak out for all in the community so they can have their voice heard even if it is from the singer.

Teenagers often feel like they don’t have a say in the world. Music portrays all of the emotions and different views about things that teenagers feel like they don’t have a say about such as homosexuality. Teenagers music taste is very diverse in the way they think and the way they interact with the world. Music such as pop, rap and reggae has an affect on how teenagers express themselves. Depending on the music they are listening to, they act a certain way or are more enjoyable. Music can make teenagers be more expressive in other ways as well.

Reflection: My most intriguing project was my science fair project.

Core values:
Inquiry: To test how fast the sodium hydroxide boils with different solutions
Research: I googled boiling points of vinegar and water
Collaboration: I worked with my partner Heaven
Presentation: What was effective was that we knew what we were talking about
Reflection: I would change the solutions to mix with and maybe try a soda and then a non sugary drink like selzer water.

In the beginning of the year when I entered world history class, I expected to learn about history dealing with world issues such as poverty. Not only did we learn that but we also learned a lot about culture, religion and beliefs of different people. During this time, I realized that belief systems should not influence basic human rights. While doing my religion benchmark during the second quarter, a really interesting quote I wrote down was this bible verse “Leviticus 20:13 - If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them.” This quote was showing how the bible viewed homosexuality. This showed that the bible states that most people disagree with the concept of homosexuality. I compared this quote from the bible to how Wiccans and Atheist viewed the subject. While looking at both the Wicca and Atheist religions I came to the conclusion that both their views aren’t too far from each other about homosexuality. A meaningful quote I gathered from searching a number of sites involving Atheist was this “Homosexuals and Atheist support each other because they are both looked down upon”. I found this interesting because I never came to the conclusion that Atheist are looked down upon. Another quote that I found intriguing was “based on information provided by the jordanian department of health, it states that there is an epidemic of homosexuality and the minister of health warning the population to “protect their children” from this disease.” Even though they found this quote, they still accept homosexuals so they don’t let this quote influence their beliefs. Atheist are mainly accepting people because both communities are looked down upon. The atheist community are believed to be devil worshippers and hate god, while the homosexual community are looked down upon because of them liking the same sex which is a sin. According to the Wiccan religion “Sexuality is valued. Wiccans generally accept the findings of human sexuality researchers that there are three normal, natural, and unchosen human sexual orientations: heterosexuality, homosexuality and bisexuality.” The wiccans don’t believe in discriminating against anyone and likes to acknowledge that everyone should be viewed as equal and not outcasts. The wiccans belief systems don’t affect how they view basic human rights. Wiccans appreciate diversity in any way especially sexuality. They believe that everyone should be treated with respect at all times. Some wiccans believe that homosexuals lack spirituality now according to this quote “It is foolish for those who consider homosexuality lacking spirituality. In ancient times we were the priest, the sacred ones who blurred the lines of gender and sexuality.” Even though a major number of homosexuals today aren’t priest, ministers, etc because of the fear of being judged, we still are very spiritual and go to church a lot and are very active with church events.  This quote shows that people’s belief systems does not affect how homosexuals are spiritual because they were priest at one time.

In this revolution unit, we studied the french/haitian revolution. We studied on how revolutions impacted the long term. We looked at violent and non violent revolutions. We looked at the Ukraine revolution and the Arab spring and all the events that occurred during that period of time.

During the Ukraine revolution the president has finally quit but now Russia has invaded Ukraine. With the Arab spring it was talking about protest, riots and things taken place there.

Pipeline project

Posted by Angelica Owens in World History - Block - C on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at 8:15 pm

For this project I learned a lot about the Keystone pipeline that is already trying to be built. I learned that it is for one, one of the biggest political battles currently happening in Washington. It is a proposed extension of the Keystone pipeline, it carries oil to Canada and crosses the border of Canada. It is a $7 billion dollar, 1,179 mile pipeline where they will carry 36 inch crude oil beginning in Hardisty Atlanta. In 2013 Governor Dave Heinman approved TransCanada’s proposed route in Nebraska. It intends to open by 2015 with a capacity to transport 830,000 barrels of oil per day, it is the largest infrastructure project currently proposed in the U.S.

5 key points:

* The estimated 20,000 new jobs ( 5 things to know about the keystone pipeline)

*  Crosses the border of Canada (keystone Xl about the project)

* 1,179 mile, 36 inch crude oil (5 things to know about the keystone pipeline)

* Pollutes drinking water (5 things to know about the keystone pipeline)

* Threatens Environment (keystone xl environment responsibility)

Title: Oh no not another project!

(teacher walks into classroom and sits down on seat)

Good morning kids you have a new project to work on….. It’s about the keystone pipeline…. Don’t get an attitude I’m assigning you a project about it! I told you I was going to do that…. Just because I’m 28 does not mean you can disrespect me! You want to know what the keystone pipeline is…. Ok. No problem it’s a $7 billion dollar, 1,179 mile pipeline where they will carry 36 inch crude oil…. It’s dangerous for the the earth so dont get near it because you could get hurt. It pollutes the water very bad so you can get sick if you get too close to it…. Yea its very bad for the earth. If you are a earth conscious person like me then you will know where i’m coming from….. If you can tell i’m against it…. Have you ever heard of the bluegrass pipeline?.... Oh….. no you haven’t heard of it before…. Ok well all you need to know is that the Bluegrass pipeline can transport flammable natural gas…. Yea I understand your faces of being scared. I would be as well…. People fear that the bluegrass pipeline will threaten water supplies…. Oh why do they fear it?.... Well i’m assuming because as I stated before it pollutes drinking water….. No problem. I’m glad to answer any questions….. Oh that’s right I never discussed what your project will be about did I?.... Oh I didn’t i’m sorry. Your assignment is to look up the keystone pipeline and find out the background information of it and how bad it is for the environment and also the good things that is going to happen due to the pipeline, you can start now in class….. Yes you have a question or a statement?...... Oh go ahead…. It says here something good about the pipeline being built is that they estimate 20,000 new jobs to be made for citizens is that true?..... Yes that would be correct…. Why don’t I want it to be built then?.... Because I feel like being personally safe, and having the environment clean is way more important than jobs even though jobs are good as well….  Ok well the project is due next friday that gives you a week to gather the information and be ready to present….. I will give you the project rubric tomorrow. Have a great day!

(school bells ring for class to end)

Title: Work on the car

(Car mechanic walks in to job)

Man let me tell you about this keystone pipeline guys. (drilling of tools onto a car).... Yea this pipeline is gonna be amazing for us yall…. Oh why?..... Let’s just put it this way there are going to be more jobs for car mechanics which means that there will be more than four of us in this job…. I know right its great!..... Oh you want to know more great things about it…. Let’s see…. (thinks for more information about the pipeline).... Oh yea, you don’t have to depend on another country to get your oil, support significant growth of crude oil production in the United States. Is that it?.... Oh you want to know more…. Ok. It will allow American and Canadian more access to the large refining markets found in American midwest and along the U.S Gulf of Mexico. Another good thing about it being built is that Nebraskans will benefit from tax revenues and spending stimulus from the construction stuff and the first 15 years of operation or the keystone xl pipeline. Also, the level of economic growth wouldn’t have been possible without the keystone pipeline running through the norfolk area….. Hell yea im all for it! Why wouldn’t I? The keystone pipeline is amazing especially for us car mechanics….. Why do I like it so much?!?..... Dude, I thought I just explained it to you why I am so hype about it! (looks frustrated) Once again for the 5th time I like it because it is an amazing opportunity for people to get hired for jobs. Also, the gross sales of used taxes increases and most the jobs will be created during pipeline construction…. Oh you want to know more! (sighs) …. Ok well, $10 million economic impact in the norfolk area during the recession…. Thats all you wanna know??..... You sure…. Ok, let’s get back to fixing the car….. (continues drilling on the car)

Title: The gardener

(opens garden and starts planting flowers while talking to another gardener)

Good morning Julie! Isn’t this a lovely day to be planting flowers and talking about the environment?..... Yes, I agree that we should talk about the keystone pipeline. Have you heard about it before?.... I feel as though it has great aspects of it such as they estimate 20,000 new jobs which is great because so many people are unemployed. If they are unemployed that means that they can not really support their family as well as they could if they were employed and if they have a lot of kids, oh please help em. Another good aspect of this is that TransCanada became the third largest employer in a community of nearly 25,000…. I know doesn’t that sound amazing!.... Oh you want to know a few more things of what makes the keystone pipeline a must have?.... Ok well let’s see. (ponders while brush her hair to think of some more reasons) Oh how could I forget, the gross sales of used taxes increases, majority of jobs will be created during pipeline construction….. Oh yea I forgot as I said before there are a lot of things I do not like about it as well….. Oh such as?.... Such as it pollutes drinking water which is terrible because if you even think about drinking that water you could get extremely sick and possibly have to go to the hospital…. Another thing I do not like about it is that it cost $58.6 million in property taxes, $39.1 million in sales taxes, $20.1 million in individual income tax, and 3.3 million in corporate tax. If you add all that up then you are spending billions of dollars just for this pipeline which may not even stay up for very long….. Well it was nice talking to you and seeing you again…. I’ll talk to you soon….Okay bye Julia see you tomorrow.

13 reasons why...all you can do is press play

Posted by Angelica Owens on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 2:21 pm
The Written part:

For my independent reading project I read 13 reasons why. There were a few things I liked about the book. One of them were that the structure of the book. I like the structure of the book because it stated the different reasons why she committed suicide. The way they described the reasons were very good. For example, one guy named tyler peeked in her house while she was getting dressed. She described him as a peeping tom and trying to see some of her goods knowing that he could never get her. Another reason why she killed herself was that someone made a list for who has a good body and she was number 1 on the list. Hannah didn’t like that at all because it kind of degrades her in so many ways. After that list guys started coming up to her touching her butt and boobs. Another thing I liked about the book was the cover of it and the back page. I like the saying “you can’t stop the future, you can’t rewind the past, the only way to learn the secret is to press play”. The cover of the book was very dull but eye catching. It makes people think “wow the girl on the cover looks sad and depressed. The book should be pretty good” Some things I did not like was how after Hannah gave the reason and what they did to make her take her own life she had the people talk but then they dragged on. I didn’t like that part because I would have liked for the author to just tell their reaction and their side of the story sweet and short. Something else I did not like about the book about how it was so long. Me personally, I hate long books or long enough books to where I have to put the book down. That part is so unappealing to me because it makes me feel like they are never going to get to what happens especially at the end. When a book is good I want them to kind of hurry up with what happens. The next thing I did not like about the book was the beginning. The beginning to me personally was not all that good. I like books that catch me within the first few words maybe even first few pages. I am interested in books that does not start out boring because then i am going to want the book to end already and put the book down. This whole book resonated with me somewhat. It did because in middle school I was very suicidal. I went through so much that at times I just wanted my life to end. I just didn’t feel like breathing anymore. So to read another book like that made me so thrilled and happy. I just wish the book was shorter and took out some things.

Lady Macbeth poem

Posted by Angelica Owens in English 1 - Dunn on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at 11:05 am
For my creative piece of Macbeth I did a poem about Lady Macbeth's character journey through out the whole story. It shows how before the death of Duncan she was the man in the relationship but after Duncan died she became very cautious and she wanted it to go away. To craft it, I thought it would be a little bit easier to write it since I am a poet but it was not as easy as I thought. Even though I am a poet to create a poem is not always easy to do but I already had an idea of what to put in it. The difficulties during making this poem was that I had to figure out to word it. I am most proud of the whole poem because it was hard but I still did a good job creating this. If I did this project over I would have definitely created something else more creative like an art piece or a sculpture out of clay. What I learned from looking at my peers projects were that they are really creative and are good at something. What I learned about myself during this project were that to try something different even if my specialty is poetry because I may be good at something else.

Question Credits to Klarissa. I got most of these questions and answers from the interview I did with her.

Analysing the data from my survey:

According to the survey I sent out on Facebook a lot of people either used to or currently cuts themselves. Most of them said they cut themselves because of bad home life, bullying, problems in school, and depression. Some other answers that I received for this question was that they cut themselves because of family, friends, they felt alone and hated and since they were diagnosed with anxiety they would have anxiety attacks very frequently. All of the people that responded to my survey said they started it in middle school between 6th-8th grade. Also they all said that the reason why they  think because self harm is because it is an easy way to ease pain, it helps them solve the problem for now.

My story:

Hi. My name is Angelica Lorine Owens and this is my story. It all started in 6th grade. I had got tired of being bullied and I was dealing with things with myself and things like that. I had been bullied since I was in pre-K and I never could really stand up for myself that much. I have been through a lot in my life and in 6th grade I had enough. In 6th grade I was bullied to the most I could take. I knew a lot of friends who cut themselves because of their issues so I figured it’s ok to do that too. At the moment when I got home I found the sharp edge of a nail clipper and I cut myself for the first time. It was never deep for it to bleed, just so I could feel the pain. That first cut felt good on my wrist. Finally after 2 or 3 years later in 8th grade I got tired of all that and I started writing poems but I had forgotten about my past or forgiven the people who hurt me. Near the end of the school year I had a mental break down and I threatened to commit suicide because I was dealing with a lot of things and I was dealing with finding myself and my identity wise which now i completely understand. I then went to a mental facility but they did not help at all because I was there too long to actually get in there but after all this I just went to poetry when ever I was dealing with something. I no longer am cutting myself but it still is tempting to do so but I just think I'm not about that cutting life anymore. I am not saying that I am happy about cutting myself because I'm not but I just admit that I did it and to move on from this issue!

I interviewed my sophomore friend Klarissa about this topic and she also said that she cut herself from depression, sadness and feeling alone and that she started cutting herself at the age of 12 years old.

Poem: Cut

The pain

The relief

Feeling of cutting

Is an addiction?

The relief feel from simple cut

Relief of anger

Relief of pain

Cutting can help

Everyday i think could i ever be beautiful

I feel can i ever get rid of the pain

Can i ever feel loved

Everyday i try and think positive

When i cut i feel a sense of relief from all anger

Every cut is like a trip to heaven

I feel as if can i get rid of the bullying

The pain is all gone now

Cutting is a sense of relief

I think can i ever be skinny

Can i ever be as beautiful as my crush

One thing i know is that i will be as beautiful as people make me seem

The pain

The relief

Feeling of cutting

Is it an addiction??
