Chaveliz Nieves Q4 Art

Posted by Chaveliz Nieves in Art - Senior Art - Hull - E on Friday, June 5, 2015 at 11:49 pm

My art consisted of a lot of pencil work. I thought I would wrap up the year with something different. My style in art is very colorful and vibrant. This quarter I decided to use pencil to create different shadows that I thought would compliment the drawling. Most of my drawling were of things that I thought of on the spot, and these drawling are what I think.

Chaveliz Nieves Capstone

Posted by Chaveliz Nieves in Capstone - Rami - Wed on Thursday, May 21, 2015 at 12:33 pm
As a senior at Science Leadership Academy, we had to create a Capstone (senior project). We were able to make it about anything we wanted. I knew I wanted to work with my friend but we didn't know how since it was an individual project. She shared her ideas for her Capstone, which was to fundraise money for her friend whom passed away from cancer a year ago. I wanted to create a detailed pamphlet about  Breast Cancer, Cure and Treatments, how to detect it, etc. I came to the conclusion that although it would be very informative, it would be harder to inform more people of this illness. My second option was to create a website. All of the information that would have been on the pamphlet would be online, and it would be accessible to all of the students in SLA, all of my social media friends, as well as my friend Jennifer Perez's friends too.

The purpose of this website is to inform people on the dangers of cancer as well as how to detect it and treat it. This website provides additional links to support groups for people who are experiencing lack of support. In addition ot creating the website,  I attended the 2015 American Association for Cancer Research as well as the Susan G. Komen walk to provide more information for the website about Cancer.

Breast cancer is hard to detect. Many people both women and men get breast cancer Knowing what breast cancer is and how it can be detected is explained in this website.  Also the different types of breast cancers are explained too. Diagrams are also provided in this link because it shows what happens to the lymph noodles in the breasts. This website is more of a scientific approach to what actually is breast cancer but in terms that people can understand. The diagrams provided show what a regular breast that does not have cancer should look like or feel like and then it shows the breast with inflamed areas that can show probable detection of breast cancer.

There are many different types of cancers. One of them is ductal carcinoma. Different ways that they are describes or even the different types of cancers that fall under this category are ,Adenoid cystic carcinoma, Low-grade adenosquamous carcinoma (this is a type of metaplastic , Medullary carcinoma , Mucinous  carcinoma , Papillary carcinoma, and Tubular carcinoma.  The infiltrating ductal carcinomas that are more dangerous and life threatening are Metaplastic carcinoma , Micropapillary carcinoma and Mixed carcinoma. They are life threatening but they are treated the same way. there i s no cure for actual cancer there is just treatment for it and since there is just treatment, they all undergo the same process depending on how developed the part of the cancer in the breast is.

The website predicts that in the United states there will be many cases of breast cancer in 2015. Although they are all serious, some of them aren’t life threatening. There will be about 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women. In addition there will also be  about 60,290 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed , which is one of the earliest signs of breast cancer .Also, there will be over 40,000 women who will die from breast cancer this year. That death rate is about 1 in every 36 women in America.

Males can also get breast cancer. The cancer that me can get forms in the tissue of their breast. It is known as a disease that only women can get because they have breast but men do get it too. The cancer in male breast is usually detected in men who are older. And sometimes it is hard to detect if a male has breast cancer. It is the same procedure that would be done for a woman but since they do not know they have it due to it being mostly a woman’s disease, they are ignorant to this. Usually it is detected in the later stages in men because they do not really know what symptoms to look for if they do have it.

Go fundme.com is a website that is basically what is the title says. It is a funding website that can be used for a specific person, group or anything you would like to use it for to receive fundings and donations. These donations are very easy to receive. We will be creating a website, for people to be able to donate money online. The team name is PINK ROCKETS and the pink rockets will be set up on a website with a gofundme.com link to receive donations! These donations will then be donated to the Susan G. K. research and another will be towards a smaller group funding for ella.

Rosemary Designs. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www.whitepages.com/business/rosemary-design-philadelphia-pa>.

Another method of fundraising will be to create Ribbons with Rosemary- Designs that will have the word #PINK ROCKETS . Rosemary Designs is a small store located on Front street between allegheny and westmoreland streets. We will be creating ribbons with the team name. The team name be printed on the ribbons and we will talk to her to see if she will be able to create ribbons for a discounted price. We will also be able to see if the manager would be able to  create other objects since she customized many things such as ribbons, pins, balloons and many more.

Recording and Photography With Mr. Herman

Mr. Herman was my photography teacher last year (Junior year). A few weeks ago, he sent out a message saying we can still use the photo lab and computers, and just the equipment in his room. I will be using one of the cameras in his room to document the process. I will be taking pictures of everything we do. Creating the ribbons to selling the ribbons. We will also record us attending the cancer walk. that way not only are we documenting what we do, but the website created will be informative as well as interesting because it just won’t be full of words.

"Eating Unhealthy Food." Breastcancer.org. BreastCancer.org, 13 Nov. 2013. Web. 28 Jan. 2015. <http://www.breastcancer.org/risk/factors/unhealthy_food>.

May diets are supposed  to keep us healthy. But many of the foods that we are being feed today cause some type of cancer due to the chemicals added to our foods. About 30 to 40 percent of breast cancer is diet related. Although these although these statistics are hard to believe, if we eat more natural foods the chances of getting cancer decrease. Eating foods such as fruits and vegetables decrease the chances of getting cancers. Eating the healthier foods are more expensive but are more beneficial in the long run. Foods with high levels of fat and processing lead to obesity in the long run and that can also relate to more diseases that can also lead to other cancers.

"National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences." Breast Cancer. N.p., n.d. Web. 30 Jan. 2015. <http://www.niehs.nih.gov/health/topics/conditions/breast-cancer/>.

This is a link that actually ends up leading to a book. The research in the website and in the book are actually about what foods are related to cancer. And not specifically certain foods but that they know there is a correlation due to the things that they add to the foods. They have also conducted studies to see if this is also a genetically thing. They studies over 50 women who are sisters of another women who have or have had breast cancer t see if there is also a correlation between breast cancer and the genetics of a person.

This is a pdf version of a lab. this is the hardcore science behind some of the parts of the body and how they may act as a host towards foreign bacteria and germs.  the website mostly talks about what EMTis  which actually stands for  epithelial–mesenchymal transition . this is going to help me throughout my capstone because I can no further my research and actually try to understand what breast cancer is and why it can form in the bodies of some people even though it may not even be diet related it can just be hereditary and how it can be prevented

Coffey, Donald S. "Controlling Cancer Through Research." American Assosiation for Cancer Research. United States, Philadelphia. 21 Apr. 2015. Speech.

This speech was about controlling cancer through research. A professor gave a speech of what cancer is and how it can be treated. Further information of what types of cancer are treated and others cured. They show the progress they have made throughout the years as well as how when there was no treatment. This speech was useful for my project because it will explain how my information is relative to his speech and how we should focus more time on research for cancer.

Chaveliz Nieve Q3 Art Portfolio

What I enjoyed the most about this quarter was the metamorphosis  drawling as well as the recreation of the image. They were both challenges for me but they were fun. I have never recreated another artists work out of scratch using paint but at the end, it worked out well. Also, foe the metamorphosis, I found online inspiration and decided to make a clock turn into an owl because the image was challenging but I wanted to create something different than what I am used to and I ended up having a sense of accomplishment. For next quarter, I expect to work even harder and I also expect to create more work that will make me proud and make me feel accomplished.

*The bird next to the bird sculpture is not my artwork. It is there as a comparison to show the similarities the sculpture has to the actual bird.

Art does not come second nature to me. In art class, we get to pick where we feel the most comfortable out of 3 sections. Passive, Middle and Future Art student. I chose middle because  I wanted to challenge myself. The knowledge that I had about art was limited. I knew about "The Mona Lisa" painting by Leonardo Da Vinci and I knew a little about "The Starry Night" by Van Gogh but not much.  From the new things I learned this quarter, I created artwork that I am proud of.
Below, you will see the best versions of my work. In every image, I added vivid colors in all of my work. Vivid colors are my favorite. These colors are very interesting because they have the power to cheer you up. I feel as though they bring cheerful, positive vibes.

Ingredients

2 cups grain rice (rinsed)

4 to 5 cups of hot water,

3 tablespoons of sofrito

16 ounce can of gandules

1 packet of Sazon with achiote

3 tablespoons of oil

Salt and adobo

Process

1. Add the oil into a big pot and let it heat up.

2. Add the sofrito into the pot and stir it until it starts to bubble up.

3. Add the gandules (beans) into the mixture and add the sazon.

4.Add the salt to give it more taste

5. Add a little bit of adobo to give it more taste.

6. Add water and let it boil

7. Then add the rice and lower the heat to low.

8. DO NOT STIR right away. Wait 10 minutes and stir rice.

9.Sir rice every 10 minutes for 30-40 minutes until the rice is tender.

Analysis: (this part you will be explaining how this meal is healthy, sofrito, guandules sazon and the ingredients basically)

Arroz con gandules is a combination of rice, pigeon peas and pork, cooked in the same pot with Puerto Rican-style sofrito. This is the signature dish of Puerto Rican culture and also has become very popular throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. Arroz con gandules is part of Puerto Rico's national dish.

Arroz con gandules is a pretty healthy meal if you look at the ingredients. One of the major components that displays its healthiness is the fact that you have to make it from scratch. Since you are making it entirely from scratch, the excess chemicals that are contained in processed foods isn’t a problem.

Sofrito offers a lot of healthy nutrition for the body because it is a mixture of all natural vegetables blended. These vegetables such as peppers, greens, onions, garlic, etc. contain nutrients that the body need on the daily basis such as Vitamin D, E, and C.

Grained rice is the most nutritious because of its starchy substance. Most of it isn’t entirely natural, but it does in fact contain some nutrition that will benefit the body. Although rice isn’t very high on vitamins, it’s a good source for iron. This is very important because we need iron on the daily basis in order to give us strength. Iron is an essential mineral. The major reason we need it is that it helps to transport oxygen throughout the body. Iron is an important component of hemoglobin, the substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to transport it throughout your body. Hemoglobin represents about two-thirds of the body’s iron. If you don't have enough iron, your body can't make enough healthy oxygen-carrying red blood cells. A lack of red blood cells is called iron deficiency anemia.

_______________________________________________________________________________________

The role in the larger food system is to make money. The food industry does not care about the amount of money you are spending or what you eat. they care about the amount of money they can make and how long it lasts so that they won't keep making new food or even let the food that they made rot.  Some of the changes that I would make with my food choices are to eat more fruits and vegetables. Not everything that I will buy will be organic but I will buy foods that are healthier and aren't as processed. The impact of these changes will be a little more expensive.  I buy a lot of healthy foods already but I never realized how processed some of the "healthy" foods I buy. For instance, in my family, we buy a lot of beans.  In Puerto Rico, we would not buy a lot of beans since we could go to family farms and actually go to the farm and collect the beans. If we didn't do it, someone else in the family would make it. Same with the seasonings. Since we are not there, we buy all our vegetables and since they come from P.R, they are not as healthy in America because they are already processed. I am willing to buy more organic foods or locally grown foods. The Ted talk explained things that I already knew but reminded me of the seriousness of eating healthy. And that is why I am willing to do the full change.

Bossypants Review

Posted by Chaveliz Nieves in English 3 - Rami - E on Friday, October 25, 2013 at 12:45 pm

Bossypants Book Trailer by Chaveliz Nieves from chaveliz on Vimeo.

In Bossypants by Tina Fey, you will find very intriguing stories. Stories from how she has a scar on her face, how much she loves and hates her job, and even stories about drunk babies! This book is not a classical romantic novel, or an all jokes book. This book is full of personal events that just make the moment funny. This book indeed is an autobiography. Everything happening in the book is about Tina Fey or related to to her in some way. If you want to know about how someone worked their way up a later, read about someone’s personal life and think hey, I am not the only person going through this, some sketches about Sarah Palin or just get a good(GREAT) laugh then this is the book for you!

Elizabeth Stamatina Fey also known as Tina Fey, was born on May 18, 1970. She is from a town right outside of Philadelphia named Upper Darby. The entire book is about personal to not so personal events in Tina’s life. She explains her childhood, her teenage years and her adulthood to a certain extent. In Bossypants, Tina Explains her childhood. She was very intrigued in the theatre. Everything she did revolved around the theatre. That influenced her life greatly because as a teenager, she work at theater as a cashier. She would like to see everyone perform and one day she performed too. She knew that is what she enjoyed doing. As she grew up that was her support. While going to school, She had a job at a YMCA to be able to pay off classes for theatre. By working and dedicating her life to her job and family, she has received many achievements and is where she is today. Throughout the book, she displays how she worked hard to get what she wanted. By being very detailed when talking about how she went from point a to b and so on, she gives the reader the opportunity to experience what she went through in some form.

This book takes you to a very similar place that Forever by Judy Blume takes you. They are both completely different genres and both have a different purpose too, but they both have one goal; to work for what they want. “Forever” was about a girl who went to a party and  fell deeply in love with a guy she met. The feeling was mutual and were going out for a while. At first everyone was happy for them, but then as time went by, they thought that if they gave each other some time, they would be able to experience new things and would be able to work through anything and everything. The only thing different between Forever and Bossypants is that the main character in Forever gave up her love because she realized that in the time she spent alone without him, that she was not truly in love with him she was just used to having him. Tina Fey was not like this. When she worked for something she workers through it all. In her book, she explains how some nights she had to stay up to finish a sketch for Saturday Night Live. (If you saw some episodes before the 2008 election and a few months later, then probably one of her sketches were in the story and you got a good laugh out of it.) Tina Fey, was the person who impersonated Sarah Palin. Although she got a lot of negative criticism for impersonating Sarah Palin, she kept moving forward and kept making new sketches.

Also, this book gives a very insightful view on what she did at work. She loved her sketches the most. With that being said, if you are really into acting, you should read this book as well. The introduction to this book was strong as well as the other parts of the book. The only downside to the book is the ending. The books ending could have been stronger. It just seems that everything was rushed. Thats like baking a cake. If the most delicious condiments are added to the cake, then a great cake is expected. But if you put it in the oven and leave it for 20 minutes because you are trying to work fast than 35 to bring the cake to perfection, then the cake will not be as good. Or maybe if you add lemon frosting to a chocolate cake. Lemon cake is good but when you mix it with chocolate it isn’t the best cake at least that is in my case. If Tina Fey added more details to the ending like she did to the rest of the book, then the book would of been better. More of a cliffhanger would of been better as well. Maybe when she hits 70, she could’ve written another book and her cliffhanger would of been the completed version of the book.  This book ending was not what I expected. Everything was tied together too quick. More details should have been including. Regardless of the ending, this book is one of the best books  I have personally read.

The life of the actress, script writer and charming Tina Fey is really down to earth and hilarious. Bossypants reflets that all. It lets the reader know that sometimes in life, many lemons will be tossed at you. And you either take the hits negatively or make lemonade.

Has industrialization led to more harm than good, more good then harm or a lot of each?

It has led to a lot of good but also a lot of harm. For instance, it's good because it created a lot of jobs for thousands of people, but it harms people because it has made the economy better. But its created indentured servitude.

My universe of obligation is my family and I

Anything extra isn’t an obligation it’s just like fun time.

“From the roots of a tree to the branches of it, you can see the changing colors of the season. Almost time to wear coats but not precisely. It’s like knocking the wind out of you. The warmth of summer so quickly replaced by the warmth of sweaters scarves and pumpkin coffee. Fall is beautiful.” was one of the things that I wrote in my journal. I learned so much from this unit as well.  Not the changing colors because of the seasons but how fast something can change. Like I changed throughout my sophomore year. It wasn’t a negative change nor positive. But it was an original change. The originality of specific things.  Originality is pushing yourself beyond personal boundaries.

In fall of 2012, I began my English and history course for my sophomore year. I was looking forward to the year because of the work I heard about during my freshmen year. The thing that inspired me the most or at least kept me myself through the entire  academic year would most likely be the history journal 19. The journal question asked “ what is your universe of obligation?” I thought to myself . But it did not take me too long to answer this question. I knew what was keeping me strong for the year. It was my family. My family is my support system and regardless having fun time or an education or even a job, they came first because that’s what kept me going and motivated. We also learned about spirituality during the unit. I am a strong believer in the Catholic religion so I felt like the unit connected to who I was in several ways. And even though we did not study how Catholicism began or even talk about Christianity, I had the opportunity to write or express my thoughts of what spirituality really is in a journal entry.  But although I felt comfort writing about my religion on a piece of paper, I had to pass that boundary. I had to push myself to strive for something bigger, for something better and for something more unique.

we were already in the middle of the academic school year and I was feeling sluggish. Just not caring about anything because I felt like I already knew everything but I reality I didn’t.  During one for the classes, we were searching up inequality in other countries. We found out about sweatshops. this was it. A way to get out of my boundaries. Journal 32, explains how industrialization is positive because it has led to many more job opportunities for many people and has made the economy rise. But then it talks about how it is negative because of all the pollution and negativity going on due to the factory opening. And then journal 33 talks about all the negativity that goes on because of the factories. It talks about sweatshops. I think that this moment was the perfect moment for  me to get out of my boundaries. I didn’t  want to buy anything created by sweatshops but it was basically impossible due to the simple fact that everything is created by them and if they are not then it is super expensive. Also, I tried another alternative which was making it myself. I didn't know how to make clothes but also most of the fabrics were manufactured in sweatshops so I wasn’t actually able to accomplish much.. Right now, I am gathering as much information possible and see what things can be put into action to stop sweatshops from still being in business.

You see, many things were learned this unit. Everything from being comfortable with yourself and how others do not have the chance to be comfortable at all. We also learned about how the only way to survive was to do things in unison.  We did a journal entry that ties everything up so neatly. Since I am such a family oriented person  my journal entry was about my experience in puerto rico. it was in my personal boundary but it was original. if you wanna read more, CLICK THIS LINK, to read the journal.

Whatever happens when all the leaves fall from the tree? It may feel lonely or frightened, it may not be the prettiest, but when spring comes all you have to remember is that april showers bring may flowers. Every moment you have to stand out should be taken because thats what originality is. And thats what I learned this year. If something really interests you, go for it. You may be pointed at or signaled but just like the tree in the winter, it realized that it bloomed in spring.

Why is the world such an unequal place?

1. population- more people in a country can make the country richer or more poor.

2. Colonization- with many countries, people fought for freedom but lost money, power because they were poor.

The best way to deal with global inequality would be to accept that it's happening. Then, you should be more informed about what the population, currrency, alliances, and history of the countries history. Try to figure out what you have and how your life would be different if you didnt have the fortune or misfortune you have. Spread the word and worry about what will happen if your country changes and see if the alliances you have with other countries will change or stay the same.

the time I went to my grandmothers house
the big palm trees and flowers next to her.
Never shall I ever forget...
The smell of her cooking.
The colors of the room,
The feeling of excitement.
Never shall I ever forget . . .
her lovely personality that cheered the home
The things she would say to those she loved
Her small body
That walked faster than anyone which seemed like she was running

Never shall I ever forget...
The time that I went to my grandmother's house
The big palm trees and flowers next to her house.
Never shall I ever forget...
The smell of her cooking,
The colors of the room
The feeling of excitement.
Never shall I forget...
Her lovely personality that cheered up the home,
The things she would say to those she loved.
Her small, tiny body
That walked faster than anyone which seemed like she was running.
And would do anything
to make us happy because we were on vacation.

Bullying has existed for many years but hasn't been as public as it has been for the past couple years. All of the social norms thrown together has built up an army of hatred. An army that will verbally, and physically hurt others.   This is a story about a young boy who dealt with bullying and overcame it.

Art in Every Language

Posted by Chaveliz Nieves in English 2 - Block on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 7:34 pm

Language Auto from chaveliz on Vimeo.

Language is a form of art. The more  languages you know, the better your art will turn out. I’m a canvas, not full of images but of words. Creating a story everyday and everynight. I wake up to a new story not knowing if I will hear it in English or in Spanish. I am proud to say that I am bilingual. Being bilingual throughout my entire life has been a true blessing. You have a feeling of accomplishment. I know that I can communicate with my family in two languages and also be able to travel from one place to another, without having to worry about understanding other people. But being bilingual had its disadvantages. At one point in my life, I had trouble being bilingual.
When I was in the second grade, my mother decided to transfer me to an all english class because my oldest sister was in Masterman, and she struggles because she wasn’t as good in english like the rest of her classmates were. I was delighted because not only was the class different, but it was also a better opportunity for me to have a better understanding of English. When I entered through the door of the classroom, a teacher greeted me. She said “Hi, I’m Ms. Lombardo, how do you pronounce your name?” I said “Cha.ve.liz” She tried to imitate every single letter the way I said it but it was useless. My name became “shavaliz” to her. It wasn’t as delighted with the pronunciation but well I just went along with it.She then said “ Follow me to your new seat”. I did as she said and I saw my friend Jose. He transferred the week before because his mother thought the same as my mother. English should be  a priority since we are in an english speaking city.

Learning english at an earlier age was going to benefit us when we grow up. Other than Jose,  I didn’t know people who were in that class, and my life shifted completely. There cultures were completely different right of the back because even though a lot of students in that class were hispanic, they did not know spanish as well as I did. I had my desk, my name tag, my books everything. And even though my name didn’t stand out from the rest of my classmates names, my background did. From the way I spoke English and Spanish, things changed completely.

Change is not a bad thing. Its something that we have to adapt to. Change is good.It was really easy to make friends too. When you’re the “new kid” everyone wants to be friends with them. The same day, I became friends with Gennyliz and Andrea. Gennyliz was Puerto Rican like I was and Andrea was African American and white. I went from the new girl to the cool girl. Jose was also there and it was good to have a friend. They were extremely friendly. I keep thinking about the day I met them and it wasn’t hard to adapt. WIth Gennyliz, I spoke both english and spanish to Gennyliz and Jose. But with Andrea it was only English. It was easy to be friends with them but sometimes I couldn’t find the correct words to respond. Sometimes when I spoke english, I responded with a spanish word. Not because I chose to, but because I didn’t know how to respond. Sometimes instead of saying okay, I would say “ o okey”. You were able to tell that english wasn’t my first language. It didn’t make me angry, it just made me want to learn more English.

Sometimes, I came home to hear my family speak in english then spanish. We called it Spanglish. The word itself sounds like spanish and english combined and thats exactly what it is. One of the biggest disadvantages might have have been pronunciation. When I said Beach, it used to sound like something completely different and well there goes a laughter. My family and I always corrected each other when the words came out wrong. it’s not because we wanted to harm each other but to strengthen our vocabulary and pronunciation. English was not our first language. So we had to work harder when we were younger in order to stay in tip top shape. Everything had to be easy for us because we had and still have to be successful.
Being a canvas isn’t always easy. You are once empty with no words. But as soon as you learn your first word, you will be trained to learn more words until your canvas is only full. Especially when you speak more than one language.  Knowing more than one language is a blessing but at the same time, if you don’t keep up with the languages then you will be lost. Creating a story is easy but the hardest part of it all may be deciding which language will be used to develop the story.

Keystone Pipeline XL

Posted by Chaveliz Nieves in World History - Block on Thursday, October 18, 2012 at 5:42 pm
For the past two weeks, Science Leadership Academy students in World History in Mr. Block's class, have been learning about the Keystone Pipeline XL. This pipeline will be one of the most disasters in the United States. It's one of the dirtiest things in the entire universe. This pipeline is also going to hurt people, physically, mentally and emotional.
My partner and I collaborated to make five unique monologues and two complex videos.  By doing this we can inform our school community and many other vieweres who are interested in this contraversial topic. Take a moment or two to watch thee videos and/or read the descriptive monologues we wrote.

Earth Monologue from chaveliz on Vimeo.

Monologue 1 The Solution for Polution:
(Earth is located between Venus and Mars, the Moon is Right behind the earth located more to the right of earth, while the sun is located to the left of earth. Earth is making very sick, she’s constantly coughing and sneezing because of the pollution inside of her. She has a handkerchief and a nice warm fuzzy sweater. The sky is black with alot of shiny stars in the sky.)

*Cough Cough*
I have always tried my hardest to be the best I can be, reaching my full potential. I have  many responsibilities. My mother, the universe is relying on me. Yet I never get any recognition for the work I do. You know I do get dizzy spinning around non stop. The sun’s bright rays constantly trying to get through my sisters layer. I feel a loss of respect I am never thought about. Key decisions worldwide usually never reflect how this will affect me long term. The air has always been my friend but now, it has become my enemy. Air is thicker, the fog is killing me. I don’t know what to do anymore. I’ve been sending everyone signs, the extreme heats in the summer and the winters getting colder each year.  I don’t know if I could take the keystone pipeline. This pipeline says to be good for the economy of the United States but its killing me and everything inside of me.(Cough Cough*)Even the little tiny people inside of me that worry more about the economy than their lives.
I mean I have a sister the atmosphere to look out for, as well as my blood the ocean, imagine if there were an oil spill. My blue cold blood would not be able to handle the thick grey oil that will kill my creations the creatures of the sea and of the land. My life is depending on the prevention of the keystone pipeline. I remember when I was younger, life was  much easier. There was no cars, no planes. Nothing.  i remember when the tiny human people would ride a horse to get from the one side of a country to anonther. Trains were really helpful too. AI had  a few coughs a years but not as much as now. (Ahh Ahh Ahh Chouuuuu!) I am about to explode!
Instead of the  Keystone Pipeline XL I have a better plan.
My cousin the sun emits multiple rays into the earth. A few years ago, scientist realized that these rays are energy and it can be stored. Well they created solar panels to start storing it for little things like light inside the house or the radio. Let’s think big now. What if these solar panels, can be put on top of a train. The train will travel from point A to point B while its getting the energy from the solar panels. Cough coughh )This way the little people inside of me can go from one place to another, and bring goods from one state to another without having to waste coal, or waste energy on cars for gas. It’s not only faster but it saves me and every little thing inside me. Please replace the Keystone Pipeline XL with this idea. Even tho it will take a little bit of work, it will create energy to transport people and goods from one side of the United States to the other. Say no to the Keystone Pipeline XL and say yes to the Solar Powered train system. Together we can save me and everything inside.

Monologue 2: Where’s Our Home?
Margret, Margret! Come meet me in the kitchen.
(pacing around the kitchen, wife walks in and he sits down)
Some people from the government just came. Talking about some they can take our land. Only gonna offer us some 15,000 dollars, don’t make much sense if you ask me since we got a good 5 acres of land. Honey I know, I know but there aint nothing we can do about it. They said  something about eminent domain, meaning we have no rights for this land. (jumps up)

This is not fair! I worked too hard for this dog on land. I have a barn out back with five horses three cattle and I can’t just pick up and leave. We just got a new pump out back, Jimmy just got braces, and the chickens got a new cewp. There is nowhere for us to go what do they expect us to do. Coming through a small town like Lamar County. I wonder what we’re going to do about my grandmother too been living on the acres next to us coming close to a century now. She put all her life savings trying to keep our family acres together. They come in here don’t even know what we’re going through the struggles that we will face because of this pipeline. What is the keystone pipeline anyway? Don’t we already have oil in the middle east? (turns to wife) Alright well don’t go on telling the kids yet.

Monologue 3:
No more Drinks?
(Soda drops from the vending machine)

Todays the day, today is the day. I can’t wait to tell everyone that our work from America is being cut down. After all these years of depending on them for our trade we are done. The Keystone Pipeline, muah (blows kisses). Nothing better than it. Now I can relax not have to worry about whether or not we need to ship out to those Americans. Yeah, you know how much they over use their oil, at least we won’t be the ones helping them. (turns head as his friend begins to talk) I never thought of it like that though. We do ship almost half of our oil to them what about our oil plants? I don’t know but it’s not like there are many other jobs here for  us that pay paying low. This pipeline is bad for the environment. It’s bad for everyone. Creating this pipeline will destroy my life now that i think about it.  What about my job, less oil means less of a need for me. The keystone pipeline won't only destroy the environment even more it will put me and others out of a job. I hate the keystone pipeline.

Monologue 4:
Mr.President says no to Pipeline

I have hope for this nation. Sadly nobody will be able to have a dream if I don’t win the 2012 election. In 2008, I promised that I will make the economy better. I also promised the U.S will help clean this pollution.that we the American citizens, will clean this mess. But I will assure you that our kids and the upcoming generations will have a place to live in and breathe freely without having to worry about possessing a disease that will not only harm them, but potentially kill them. How will I do this with the keystone pipeline though.

(tying his tie, looks down at index card into the mirror)

Let me try this speech again. We need to become independent from other countries. The keystone pipeline will allow us to create jobs helping our economy. (deep breath) I can’t do this anymore. I don’t think I want the keystone pipeline, it is damaging our environment it is putting people out of their houses leaving people homeless. Is it worth creating jobs when people are losing homes? I need to find a way to make it work. Have the people whose homes we are taking be the ones getting the jobs building the keystone pipeline. (rubs hand on head)

Before I was Barack Obama the president, I was Barack Obama the boy living in hawaii with my grandmother. Ugh I can’t keep forgetting this. My grandmother who risked everything to make sure that I am where I am today. What if this were her? But is it worth it the fact is this will help the States. it is too close to the election to be rocking the boat what do the people want? ( begins pacing up and down) The fact that my election can be based on something as dependance on foreign oil. There are other solutions we need to work our way up to no dependance on these oils. There are other solutions, such as solar energy. You know I’ve never really agreed with George Bush, but when he said that we were “addicted to oil”, yeah I have to agree with that. But what do I do when my opponent will kill me for doing this changing my opinion this far down the line, so close to the election. But I will not lie to the people I will be the voice of for four years. I will say the truth and hope for the best that’s all I can do. (walks out the door)

This Pipeline will Be The Death of Me
(Waiting in front of the court building for the trial. Looking through all the pictures and the evidence that has been left by the cops. The documents from the hospital, the pictures of the injuries the cop left all over my body. A phone in my right pocket with a few leftover dollar in my wallet in my left pocket.) All the witnesses are here with me, well the ones that are ready to testify.)
This is injustice!  After looking at all of the images when I can be doing way more. I don’t even understand how or why on Earth I would get this hurt? Don’t we have the right of freedom of speech? my voice had to be heard I had to stop it but the abuse got unbearable. I didn’t quit because thats why i am here. (The plaintiff’s lawyer asked him if he was fighting for the earth’s rights, and/or his rights. The plaintiff replies extremely fast trying to not sound stubborn but reassuring. Well of course sir. I’m here to fight for what’s right! and the Keystone pipeline XL is not right! it emits more three times more toxins than gas can release in one year.
I understand that this is a country where we all want what’s good and cheap. But what they did to me another fellow activist and what they will do to our country is not acceptable. To start of these gases that will be emitted into the atmosphere will hurt the earth more than two times than regular gas. They will first extract tar sands from Canada. The process of extraction will cause a great amount of pollution but then processing it through the pipelines from Canada to Texas will cause a greater disaster. (Ring,Ring,Ring. It’s the lawyer calling. the layer is waiting inside of the courtroom. He is rushing the plaintiff to go inside because the judgement will start in ten minutes.) Okay I will be ready in a few more minutes. Yes I know we will be proceeding into the courtroom any minute but I want to make sure that everything that I have brung in is used without being jeopardized. Okay well back to concentration. so these pipelines will create a gas that evaporated and won’t be used. It will stay in the ozone layer and will create a massive disaster to the world. The gas that will be created from the tar sands would be used to fuel up cars and a few members from the government claim that it will boost up the economy. But what will the economy without an Earth? Nothing ofcourse.
if this injustice continues then we will have no earth and according to the amendments we have the right to sleep. I know for sure that a lot of rights are broken. I am a slave to The Pipeline. I am afraid of falling asleep and waking up in a world which we would have to use masks to breath. This pipeline will be the death of me.(The plaintiff walks inside the building and the scene ends with him shutting the door.)

Sweet 16!

Posted by Chaveliz Nieves in English 2 - Block on Friday, September 28, 2012 at 11:11 am
“Happy Birthday Chaveliz”! I was extremely delighted to hear and see people entering my birthday party and wishing me a wonderful birthday. Nothing can or ever will make me feel the way I did on that special day to me. So much preparing and so much hard work to spend four hours with my family and friends.
It all started a few months before my 15th birthday. My parents asked me if I wanted a quinceañera or a sweet 16. I automatically said a quienceañera because it was a tradition in my culture. Unfortunately, my parents said if I wanted a quiceañera, I had to do it with my older sister because her birthday was a few days after mines and she wanted a sweet 16. I was a little disappointed but told her that I would rather have a sweet 16 too so that both of us could have our own day. We wouldn't have to worry about who or what people say or have to worry about whose friends can come or not.
When the time came for my birthday, all the preparations came along with it. The dress, the cake the decorations, the food, everything! My mother told me not to worry about all of that because the hall we rented for the night, came with everything that we needed for the day. The hall was a beautiful burgundy color with a lot of flowers everywhere and a really big dance floor. The lighting was a little dim so my dress would have its own spotlights when I entered and the lights would shine on me. All I had to worry about was the cake that I was going to get and the two dresses, and the invitations for the party. My mother asked me so many times what I wanted for my birthday but I didn’t know what to say or ask for because I had everything I asked for.

When June of 2012 came around, I had to start working out to buy my dress or thats what I thought was going to happen. What girl would not want her dress to fit and look beautiful? During the summer, I was babysitting my cousins and staying at my uncles house. But at  the same time, I ate so much I always told myself that I would exercise later or go to the park in the morning. The reality was that I gained weight during the summer. “Did you finish working out”? my uncle asked me. I said yes because I knew he wouldn’t let me order my dress until I did. “okay then. come over here so you can order the dress of your choice” he said. I ordered my dress online. I orders a long poofy dress. It was a champagne colored dress with a lot of diamons on the upper part of the dress.I was hoping for it to fit because I got it the size I thought would fit. And also it was extremly beautiful! The shipping date was September 4th and I would get the dress September 12th. I finished babysitting and went back home because school was about to start. I got home on August 28. Everyday, I used to check if the mailman was there with my package. One day, i went out with my mother. “Mom we have to go buy my new pair of heels for my party” I told my mom. She replied with an okay we will get to the mall in 15 minutes. We bought beige colored heels that complimented the champagne and silver dress. When we arrived home,I saw a note on my door that said a package came to your house but it was left in my porch. My neighrbor left a note on my door. I was extremely excited to know my dress was just footsteps away. “Mom it’s inside Aalliah’s house”! I said. I will be right back with my dress. I bursted out of my house to go to my neighbors house and get the dress! I saw my neighbor outside of her house with the package and she handed it to me. I took it and said thank you for holding on to it. I was surprised because it was September 6 and I already had my dress! I was very joyful and thankful I got my dress.I was so thankful because I knew I had to adjust the length because it was 5 inches longer than it should be on the website. But when I went to put it on, that wasn’t the only problem. My dress did not close ! It was small! I tried and tried and tried to put the dress on correctly but it did not fit! My mom tried to put it on but still it did not fit! Extremely upset, I took the dress off and got ready to work out. I need that dress to fit! It’s my dream dress! The only one I ever wanted.

On the brightside, by my dress getting to my house three weeks before my party, I was able to work out and get it fixed on time. I got up early in the morning the next day and I heard my mother tell me to hurry up and get ready. We were going to work out! “ Run Chaveliz, You want that dress don’t you”? I replied with a yes! “So get to it and start running” my mom said. This happened for two weeks and a half. I saw the changes. I was so happy I saw physical changes. Now all I was waiting for was my dress!A few days before my party, I tried on my dress fitted perfectly. It had to be tweaked in a few placed to look better but it fitted. I was so grateful it did. Now knowing that my dress fitted fine, I went shopping for my changing dress. After two intense days of shopping, I found the dress that matched perfectly to my first dress and there it was ,it hit me. The idea of knowing that my party will be in two days!

On the day of my party, I woke up early to get beautified. I went to the hair salon and got a lot of curls on my hair, and got my nails done.I was extremely tired! But still tried to remember that all my friends and family will meet me at the hall. I left my house at 10 in the morning and got back home at 3:26 in the afternoon. In three hours, I had to be at the hall for my party. The hall that was full of flowers, full of butterflies and especially full of family and friends. I looked for all my make up and put some on. I was glowing and felt like a princess! Two hours down and I had nothing to do. So I sat and watched tv and took some pictures and then put on my dress. My ride got to my house ten minutes before. SO I had to rush out of my house and proceed to the hall. I saw so many lights on my way to the party. So many signs and I just sat there. Excited trying to  calm myself down and there I was. In front of my hall. People entering and everyone screaming“Happy Birthday Chaveliz”! I was extremely delighted to hear and see people entering my birthday party and wishing me a wonderful birthday. Thats all I heard when I arrived at my party. That day will always be held in my heart. I saw my friends and family and enjoyed it dearly. Now I know if I want my dress to fit, without any complications to work out or if not my party will be a disaster!

Is Obesity linked to Prices?

Attention all viewers! Recent studies have shown that the foods that we love the most, are killing us slowly. According to Top 10 Junk Foods, common foods that teenagers can easily find are French fries, a can of soda or chips. This junk food is found at an affordable price. Therefore everyone will buy them because they find them delicious and might even think they are nutritious. If our country increased the junk food prices and lowered the fruits and 100 percent fruit juice was at a cheaper price then our country wouldn’t be in an Obesity crisis.

When we get hungry, we want something to eat fast and hot. That’s where the idea fast food restaurants came from. Before, the U.S did not have such a system of fast food because they knew that if the food were out for too long, it would begin to spoil. Then, they made up a system in which the food was going to be ready. This process is horrible because its fried fat, and/or through the microwave. This may sound disgusting but it’s the truth. Millions of Americans love fast food restaurant. That’s where obesity comes in. You see, when you are cooking greasy fat then you are serving poison to the community. You’re killing our country for a dollar a burger. If someone was hungry and it was between the food that is home or a fast food restaurant, 2 out of 3 people chose fast food because they don’t want the wait. This food is horrible for the body but like it tastes good, the community doesn’t mind.

Obesity rates have also gone up in the United States because we are currently in a recession. Unemployment rates are going up because there is not enough money and not enough money means not enough food. Unless, you buy the unhealthy food that can potentially kill you. We need change and we need it now. The prices in our country have to change. What’s bad for us is extremely affordable but what’s good for us is horrible. How can this society not be as mindful with the new generation and putting them at risk of so many illnesses?

There needs to be change now. In our country the obesity rates for a male is about 31 percent. This needs to stop now. There is no reason why we can’t eat what we want without having to pay a lot of money. All of this fast food is causing cancer to our citizens because the fries from fast food restaurants contain a chemical that causes cancer. The community does not know this because we are not aware. We buy but do not know what we are buying! This has to stop.

There are many ways that the new generation can eat these foods while leaving original flavors and no artificial flavors. If our government makes a change in our food change we can be able to lower the rates of obesity. For example, if they say that a bag of chips, costs two dollars and a bunch of bananas is 35 cents per pound then the country will want to eat the banana. The country goes for the cheapest item. IF the healthier things aren’t as expensive than I can guarantee that we would have a healthier child rate.

We can change this now. Change is something that we all need and especially this country. We need healthier foods for lunch, and more affordable prices for the foods we need to eat. We had so many farmers and now we have none. Like unemployment is so high and farmer rates are so low, then why don’t we hire farmers? If we hire these farmers, then our fruits will be more affordable and our country will be at a healthier state.

Are You in Risk?

Posted by Chaveliz Nieves in English 1 - Dunn on Sunday, May 13, 2012 at 8:27 pm
Diabetes-and-obesity
Diabetes-and-obesity
Many people all over the world weigh more than what they should. Doctors call them overweight. When a person is extremely heavy or fat, doctors call this state of being obesity. Anyone who is about 20 pounds or heavier than his or her desirable weight, is considered overweight. People who are more than 30 or 40 pounds heavier than they should be are considered obese. If we don’t change these statistics, then our next generation will be in greater risk of illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure and even cancer.

In accordance to the center for disease control, we are eating ourselves into an epidemic of diabetes. According to the international diabetes foundation states "Diabetes and obesity are the biggest health challenges of the 21st century. Since 1999, diabetes has affected more than 16 million Americans. That has increased by more than 40 percent in the last decade. During the same time span obesity increased from 12 percent to 20 percent. Last year diabetes increased by 6 percent and obesity increased by 52 percent. About 80 and 90 percent of Americans with type two diabetes are obese. In relation obesity has a big impact in your health by increasing the risk of diabetes.

Obesity has been linked to other health problems such as high blood pressure. High blood pressure occurs when the body is in hypertension. When children are overweight r obese, they start to get tired quicker. This causes the body greater increase of high blood pressure. Many children in the United States do not realize the risks of being overweight or obese. Many people in the U.S have High blood pressure and the majority of the population is either overweight or obese. These conditions can hurt you so bad that can increase the risks of cancer.

The human body needs certain fats and oils in the body to be completely functional. When humans abuse of those body fats and intake more than the percentage they need, then they are hurting themselves and are in greater risk of obesity. When some Like all of the sections of fat in your body are full and you keep in taking food, your body gets bigger and not full of muscle but full of junk. This slows down the metabolism and your body can’t flush out all of the excessive fats. As a result, you can develop certain types of cancers because the human body was not able to flush out the negative oils out of the human system.

By eating the foods that you find the most “delicious” and not taking care of your body you can suffer from many different thins. You can get various types of diseases from high blood pressure to even cancer. If we don’t change the life style in American children, then the next generation will be harder to protect from these horrid illnesses. Just because you think certain things are healthy for the human body doesn’t mean they are. Take care of yourself and be sure to be aware of the risks of obesity.

Chaveliz Nieves
Para El Municipio Publico
Querido Alcalde,

Yo me comprometo a ayudar y cuidar a Pablo.

No tenia corazon. No tenia sentimientos.

Posted by Chaveliz Nieves in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Friday, January 13, 2012 at 10:38 am

Who I Am and What I Want

Posted by Chaveliz Nieves in Technology - Hull on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at 5:41 pm
When you take a glance at my slide, you may see a couple of butterflies, flowers with a cool design, a purple back-round and my name in an aqua blue. We all that thats the only thing on my slide but theres more to it!
When you see my slide design the first thing you will notice is the color scheme. The main colors used are purple pink and blue. Those three colors are very appealing to they eye and are also my favorite colors. Presentation Zenk stated that the text should be as big as i wants. Theres never a limit. But I disagree because my name Chaveliz, would not catch the audiences attention if its written across the entire slide. The slide also contains a lot of repetition. Not by word but image. I have a many butterflies because it brings peace in every single country. There is a lot of bleeding. All of the images on the corners are cut off because it catches the audiences eye. They would wonder where the images are coming from and/or going to. Remember to pick the leaset colors as posible. Not to light or bright because then you won't catch the audiences attention. Have fun designing your next presentation because you will be surprised with your outcome.

House Flowers

Posted by Chaveliz Nieves in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at 10:39 am

España no soporta esa idea.

Posted by Chaveliz Nieves in Spanish 4 - Manuel on Thursday, November 3, 2011 at 11:27 am

The project was to create Guatemalan masks. The purpose of this mask was to put hat is noticeable about me on the outside and the least noticeable things in the inside. We had to write a 600-word essay, to explain us stating with the most obvious things to the least obvious things. My mask has a panda back round. It had ears and it is all black because pandas are my favorite animals. The face has two sides; a flower side and then a regular face with glitter. I love flowers and i love happy people and being happy. Glitter makes everything happier inn my opinion. Therefore, i added glitter to my mask. My mask also includes whiskers. Cats are pretty cool so I added some whiskers.

Soy amable y a veces sencilla.

Me importante mucho mi familia.
