Chloe Simmons Capstone

Posted by Chloe Simmons in Capstone · Jonas · Wed on Thursday, May 28, 2020 at 7:05 pm

For my senior capstone, I decided to try to create a STEM after-school program that introduces STEM to younger kids that didn’t have much exposure. It was to be called “Games: Behind the Scenes.” This program was to introduce STEM by looking at how a game is made aka coding. They would have learned what coding is, its basic terms, and much more. I wanted to do this capstone so that I could give the same experience I had when I learned of STEM at SLA to people who aren’t exposed to it as much. The first step was to have my idea fully develop. I didn’t want to go into doing this capstone only knowing part of your plan. This included doing research. I had to find out what it takes to run a program and how to keep it engaging. After much research, I design my program. I had to make a simple game that would be used as an example to help explain coding. I also had to design the curriculum and layout of the program. This helped me in writing my proposal that would be presented when I presented my program to schools. Sadly, because of C-19, those plans were put at a halt. Nonetheless, I learn that time should be used wisely, never “marry” an idea, and to be prepared. Down below is the curriculum of the program and a video of the game ‘Target’ being played.

Advanced Essay #3: War vs. Story

Posted by Chloe Simmons in English 3 · Block/Harmon · Y Band on Friday, May 3, 2019 at 11:08 am
Introduction: The goal of this essay is to show how war is always romanized rather than what war is. The reasoning for this can vary. I'm really proud of how I was able to make my essay flow and usage of my sources. One thing I wish to improve on is my time management.

                                             War Vs. Story

In my living room, my siblings and I sat on the couch with tired eyes, trying to stifle our yawns for the fifth time. My father was sitting in his favorite chair. Our Uncle Fro came over that day, going on about a time where their great-uncle went to France in WWI; A time that I honestly did not care for. They fought. Someone won and someone lost; that’s war. As our uncle went on, we became exasperated. My dad interrupts my uncle.

“That’s not how the story goes,” my dad spoke up.

“Oh really? Then how does it goes?” replied my uncle with an annoyed expression.

“You forgot to tell them about his tail.”

I raised my head in interest. I see from the side that he also got my siblings’ attention.

“What tail?” I asked curiously.

“The tail he got in France,” he replied, “listen and I’ll tell you.” My siblings and I sat up straight and focused our attention to our father as he told the story about his great-uncle’s tail. As focused as I was, I could notice my uncle shaking his head.

“Fables,” he muttered.

Many stories of war are heard out throughout life. What we receive can depend on how it’s told, and it can be told in many ways. But it’s never the straight truth. There’s always a different way of hearing the story. It’s always romanticized. War is often told without the horrific parts rather than straight truth to give it a meaning.

War stories are often changed and shaped into propaganda. In one video called The Army Experience Center by Roger Stahl, it showed a building controlled by the military who “merged the imaginary and actual worlds of military life” (April 2nd, 2015) through video games. It goes on to say that the young people that usually come by can play video games and seek staff if they’re interested in joining the army. When creating a video game, there must be a plot to it, and a plot is a story. With these video games, users are interacting with the war stories  created through video games. Thus, some users see war through a lens created by the army, who wants them to see something other that what war really is.

With war, it’s hard for soldiers to connect with people who haven’t had the experience for themselves. Stories are ways for people to connect with each other, and war stories are no different. With the book, The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, one chapter called Good Form tells of how he has made up many stories within the book. What was his reasoning? He goes on to say “I want you to feel what I felt. I want you to know why story-truth is truer sometimes than happening-truth” (171). When saying “story-truth” and “happening-truth,” he simply means a story versus the truth. In the book, he tells of the detailed story of how he killed a man versus how he watched the man get killed. When telling the event the way it is, it most of the time draws people away from the story, especially if it’s a story similar to others. To avoid it, there’s a twist to the truth that keeps people’s attention, just as O’Brien did in his book. He knew it would be hard to understand where he comes from when it comes to war, especially when you never experience it. It can be hard to tell all the details without hurting, as shown in the chapter entitled Courage To Speak. Instead, rather than explaining the truth to people, it’s made into stories that people can relate to in some way.

In this world, countless countries try to make themselves appealing and greater than what they really are. A way they do this is the way their history is told. In America, when learning of the history of wars we’ve been in, we focus on the wars that we’ve won. It shows the victories and achievements that were made during these wars. Never looking at the losses we’ve had. As Chris Ryder said in his article entitled (Partial) History: Why 'History Is Written By The Victors' Couldn't Be More True, “we tend to assume what we are reading is true.” (2016) It’s showing we tend to make their perspective of history the true history, and unable to connect when real history is presented. With this, countries continue to write their history in the perspective they saw it as. After all, history is written by the victors.

Why is it easier to accept fictional stories rather than truth? We translate war to stories that have morals and meaning because we can't deal with meaninglessness. If it doesn’t have meaning, then don’t know how to relate to it. However, is it ok to believe in a story of the truth rather than the real truth?

Advanced Essay #2: Identity of Self vs. Society

Posted by Chloe Simmons in English 3 · Block/Harmon · Y Band on Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 1:48 pm
Introduction:
The purpose of my essay is to show identity of self can be affected by the identities society pressure you to have. I'm really proud of the flow of my essay. I was afraid it would be everywhere. I'm also proud of my scene I think I picked a really good scene. One way I want to improve my writing process was asking questions more throughout my essay. I also wish I could have learn ways to expand on my analysis. Other than that, I'm proud of this essay.

Advanced Essay # 2: Identity of Self vs. Society

Laughter and a sense of lightness filled the night. Family Dollar sign is shining in our faces. There were six of us. As soon as we’re at the door, a woman stands in front of us with a stern face at us. She had her arm crossed, back straight, and her feet stood apart. Suddenly, I notice the cold wind and the laughter dying out.

“Why are y’all here?” She questioned. Before I could answer, my sister beat me to it.

“We have money.” Zoe proceeds to take out the three dollars I gave her and laughter came alive. Despite this, the woman looks were unwavering and laughter died again.

“Y’all sure?” She asked. “When a group of young black folks come around, it only means one thing in this store.” She didn’t need to say anything for us to know what she meant. Nyomi spoke this time.

“Ma’am. We are Christian black sisters. We’re not looking for trouble, but for snacks.” Everyone smiled at that, and finally, the woman smiled.

“Well, I can’t say no to that.” She started. “Come in and getcha goodies. I had to be precautious with people like y’all.” Everyone went in and got their snack, the light mood back. But I couldn’t help to think how we were treated. We’re young folks, but that doesn’t mean we’re a part of the worst of them. Why did she think that way? Why did she question me about who am I?

As we grow older, we start to learn about ourselves and start to form an identity that fits who we are. Our identity can be influenced and can change from time to time, but it still fits for us. However, we are also born to the identities from society the moment we’re born. These identities can be permanent or temporary. With such identities from society, we become victims of the stereotypes of the identity, whether it’s good or bad. How then, are we to be comfortable with social identity? We don’t. Instead, we put a mask of what society deems acceptable, despite how we may feel.

However, when we do so, not only do we do it to fit in, but also we end up having a disconnection to each other. Thandie Newton, an actress, said in a Ted Talk entitled Embracing Otherness, Embracing Myself, “Only we're not living with each other; our crazy selves are living with each other and perpetuating an epidemic of disconnection.” (July 2011) This quote shows the separation between people within a society. With the identity society puts on us, it causes people to stick with similar identities to themselves and that understands the pressure with that identity. As a result, many don’t wish to approach people who are different from themselves. In society, it’s been taught that being different can be good. However, when there’s a certain trait is what makes a person different (a different identity that goes against norms for different), it becomes unacceptable and shamed on. So instead of continuing to keep showing it, people decide to hide it in an acceptable identity and stick to those people with that same identity.

Thinking about this, it makes me think of what Wesley Morris, an author from New York Times Magazine, wrote in one article called Why ‘Self-Identifying’ Is Different From Coming Out, “[i]t’s [easier] to hate whom you can’t see and harder to hate whom you can.”(Dec 2015) The idea of Morris shows how others refuse to get to know the person and puts an identity they see fit for them to either love or hate on it. Instead of accepting people, many people choose to ignore their identity and continue to put them in an identity they see fit. Why? It helps them to categorize people who they consider good and the people they consider bad. It’s hard to accept or reject a person when they already know who they are. However, when going off of someone's identity, it can be from what they can see. Even if it’s not fully who the person is. This helps them in their mind to fit into society, but also to protect themselves.

It annoys me to know when people put an identity on me, they’re right. I’m talking about when they went at it the wrong way.  Despite my maturity and mannerism, I do some things that are youthful-like. Some are okay with that while others judge when I do. “Typical” becomes their favorite word to say around me. It felt as if they expected that. Just like the woman expected of Hush Puppy to act a certain way. In the shelter scene of the movie called Beasts of the Southern Wild, the woman is yelling at Hush Puppy saying, “You’re going to have time-out. Are you even listening to me?” (June 2012) Hush Puppy and the girls from the Bathtub are dressed up nicely. They’re not listening to her and are not sure what to do with themselves. It was expected of Hush Puppy to misbehave because she was never raised that way in the Bathtub. When she does so, the woman is questioning her in an angry way. That the behavior of Hush Puppy isn’t normal in her society.

Looking into society, I see a lot of people together yet separate. It’s a wonder who they are. Will there ever be a time to show it? Does there need to be an identity in every aspect of who we are? Thought it’s all around, it is not seen in SLA. Here, people can be themselves and not be judged for it. Maybe society can start with a little less hate, like SLA.

Advanced Essay #1: Work Vs. Cat

Posted by Chloe Simmons in English 3 · Block/Harmon · Y Band on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at 8:31 pm
                                                                                        Work Vs. Cat

Snow came hurling down as the winds howled in Philly. Everyone have been lured to sleep by the nighttime. I sit in my room, eyes flying over paper by paper, making sure the project is right. It’s so hard for it to be right when everything seems to be blurry. My eyes are half-open and red, sleep deprived. So much so that I hear scratching at the door. It was only until 10 minutes later that I knew it wasn’t just me. I smiled. I got up, went to my door, and opened it. Sprinted in my grey and white tabby cat, Tony. By the time I closed the door, Tony was rolling all over my papers, my pencil gone. “Ok Tony, let’s get to bed.” I look outside. The snow is deep. “I have tomorrow.” I put my stuff in my bookbag and turn off the lights. I climb into bed. I can hear the jingles of Tony’s collar as he settles in. I relax. The moon shines over us both as we, too, were lured to sleep.

Before, I would have never cared staying up late. I would have continued working into the morning. Just to make my work perfect. I didn’t have friends and I was distant from my family. I was just a machine running its program every day.

When people hear of my neighborhood, looks of pity becomes common. I was sick of it. So I worked to prove them that I’m not another stereotype. Along the way, this goal became my life. That life ended when Tony was born. We had his mother, Oobie, for several years. Each year a new litter was born to give away. Nothing new. Except when we gave all the kittens, but Tony, away. Mom and Zoe decided to keep him. As long he stays out my way, I thought.

Two years later, it’s 2 am. Everyone is asleep. A project is all that’s on my mind. I’m hunched over my work, eyes half-open and red, but can’t focus. One hour has passed since the scratching and the meowing started, each minute getting louder. I sighed. I knew then I wouldn’t be able to focus with him there all night. I stood up and made sure I was steady before I move towards the door. He shot in as soon as I opened it. By the time I closed the door and turned around, he was already laying on my papers.

Not again, I thought. For the past two years of middle school, I’ve been harassed by a cat. Not a single night goes by without him. I look towards him only to see my pencil case on the floor. I stormed over to pick Tony up from my work and put him to the ground. He attacks five minutes later. He always does. Tony is like a computer virus within to my program, putting things out of order. I sat down in my bed, tears of anger and stress forming. I put my palms to my eyes. I start to cry. Never thought my cat would be my breaking point. I felt a weight on my lap. I move my hands and open my eyes to see him purring.

“Tony,” I whispered tiredly, “it’s always you.” I need to get this done soon, I thought. Before I knew it, I spilled out all of my problems to him. I went on until I couldn’t, sitting there, petting Tony. At that moment, my focus wasn’t on work. It was on Tony. I closed my eyes as I listen to him purr. I was content. I was at peace. I was happy. That night, I was ok that I didn’t finish work.

Life isn’t always working. People rush to get things done so much that they forget to look at the important things. Life. Family. And themselves. Society always sees time as an enemy. Time to work on this. Time to do that. You have no time for this. Why make an enemy that will last forever? Death is already one enemy. Time is just time. There’s no point getting to your destination as soon as you can. I will get there at my own pace. So that is what I did. Fewer nights were taken up by my work. I started to make friends. The distance between my family and I disappeared. I became a fan of many fandoms and books. Tony became my best cat friend. Every night, he would scratch on my door, ready to turn in for the night. Some nights I needed to stay up, but never late. I was content. I was happy. I felt balanced. It’s strange to see my life change for the better just because a certain cat wouldn’t give up.

Order & Isolation

Posted by Chloe Simmons in English 2 · Pahomov · E Band on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 5:36 pm

What causes human beings to change their behavior? The most considerable influence comes from our environment.  Our society depends on structure and governing rules; however, when in isolation of civilization, human beings will change their behavior to fit their circumstances. In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, the author tells a story of a group of schoolboys stranded on an island, isolated from their society, who must learn to survive in an environment to which they are unaccustomed to. Though they try to bring order and rules to their isolated world, they are unable to obey them and, consequently, the boys change from rigid schoolboys who follow orders to savages. Human beings will revert to an uncouth state of being when isolated from rule and order.

In chapter 10 of the book, Jack and Piggy are trying to get a grip of themselves over the killing of Simon, who was mistaken to be the beast (the “monster” the schoolboys began to fear) by Jack and his tribe. Also after the murder of Simon, the tribe gathers around Jack. It reads, “The chief was sitting there, naked to the waist, his face blocked out in white and red.” (160) Before, Jack was only the leader of the choir, which can only be assumed that this means they grew up the Christian way, which in society, is seen as a civilized organization to take part in. This includes believing that God is a spirit creature that can’t be seen and to be modest in clothing. Here, this quote shows quite the opposite. Instead, Jack and the tribe are naked, not even thinking of what they are displaying to each other. Also, in this chapter, they talk about satisfying the “beast” by giving a head of the pig on a stake to it and have a dance to keep the beast away from them. Throughout history, rituals and sacrificing food are ways to worship a god. God cannot be seen as an image. This and the clothing can only be possible because of the isolation from civilization and its rules and order.

An example of this behavior is seen in prisons today. As of today, many prisons are looking into isolations as the answer to rehabilitation for a criminal. However, according to Sadie Dingfelder’s article about the risks prisons take on the prisoners’ mental health with solitary confinement entitled Psychologist Testifies on the Risks of Solitary Confinement, it shows how it “renders many people incapable of living anywhere else.” With this, it shows how many of them aren’t able to act as society orders to. In fact, one prisoner named Anthony Graves recalled how one inmate "would go out into the recreation yard, get naked, lie down and urinate all over himself. He would take his feces and smear it all over his face." This is not civilized behavior at all. As inmates are isolated from the real world, their minds “don't live in the real world anymore.” (Anthony Graves.) Meaning, all rules and orders of society that are meant to be kept up are long gone. They do what they wish to do, despite what their society says. Just as Jack and his tribes (really all the boys) have done when they were on the island.

In chapter 12 of the book, Ralph is trying to get Sam and Eric’s attention without being caught by the tribe. When he did get their attention, the twins warned him, “They hate you, Ralph. They’re going to do you.” (188) As known in civilization, when having an argument, they are to be civilized with this. This includes no exploding anger nor acting out in anger. Instead, society puts show to that they must communicate and be mature with the situation at hand. In the novel, their situation is having people help in surviving on the island and getting the fire going to be rescued. In the beginning, though there were tensions and anger from arguments from Jack and Ralph about the situation, they’ve been as respectful as they can be to each other, with no sudden lashing out of anger. However, as time goes on through the novel and the boys decides to separate themselves, more of their anger and hostility begins to show as the situation is brung to the surface again and again. Up to this point in time, where the only solution to Jack and his tribe to solve the situation is to kill out of anger. This is not what society promotes.

This scene is similar to many prisons today. Many prisons struggle to keep down the violence within them. An article from BBC News states “For months there has been huge concern about conditions in prisons, escalating levels of violence, self-harm and suicide.” Many come into prison with violence a part of them. To tone it down, in the US, many prisons are turning to solitary confinement as a way to solve the problem. According to the article Alone, in ‘the Hole’ by Kirsten Weir, the segregation from human contact “has never been proven to make prisons safer.” Many are in constant fear of each other hurting them. So, to protect themselves and survive from  the violence, they act out violently, instead of seeking help or talk things out civilly. Whether it be instrumental violence, expressive violence, or self-harm. They need to eliminate the situation with violence, just as Jack and his tribes tries to do in the novel.

As shown, whether through the real world or through books, rule and order is needed in order for people to never revert back into an uncivilized state of being. What if everyone had a sense of mind where they think through a situation? What would happen if the logical part of us would take over, as it seems to have done with Piggy? Instead of having emotions take control of our actions, our actions can be justified with logic. As a result, even in isolation, human beings will be able to have order and civilized manners within themselves and situations can be handled properly. Just as it should be.

(Sighs)“It’s good to see you too, Em. But I’m not Hope. I’m Faith.” (Turns to audience) But am I? At least I think I am. I mean, I’ve been around to see 15 years of my life. I should know. Sadly Emily still doesn’t know.

I wish I can accept it and push it of, but Em, I can’t. Like really, like, you’ve been friends with my big sis for like 18 years and me for like 15 of them. That should be enough time to see the differences between us, right? YES, I look like Hope. I get it. But we are different. Different people, different names, just … different. I mean yeah, we do similar stuff from time to time. How was I supposed to know a handful of that will turn into a lifetime of confusion with telling the difference between two people? I mean like, you even got the twins’ names right but you can’t get my name right. You can’t identify me? Seriously?

Do you see this? Are you kidding me! My friend? My own friend? (Calms herself. Looks to the roof) You know what … I don’t even know if you’re my friend. I don’t even  know if anyone is my friend. Like, the first thought that comes to y’all head when you see me is Hope? Hope, that one girl whom I’m related to. The one girl that’s like an itch that can’t be relieved, no matter what you try to do. That ONE GIRL where I, me, Faith Patterson, is forced to live in her shadows. Just sitting there, never to be truly seen.

I mean, yeah she’s a good person ‘n’ all. S-she’s a people’s person just like mom. People love people’s person that can talk clear. She’s not awkward socially. She’s unique. People like unique people. Not me. I’m just the opposite. Just last Saturday she was invited to three parties. She’s the life of the party. I wanted to say “Is she the life of us all too?” That’s not even the worst part. I was right next to them when they invited her. They turn their backs towards me. They didn’t- They didn’t want me there, but I can’t blame them. Who would want a socially awkward person who tries to be her best to not be at their party? But I just don’t understand. Am I wearing a mask with her face or something?

Why? Why are the people so confused? We’re different. I try to make that clear. I dress different from her, no matter how uncomfortable. If she looks casual, I look professional. Elegant. If she wears jewelry, I don’t. If she wants to wear make-up, I don’t want it. I mean, I’ll probably look like a clown … or pretty for John. I did tell you- Did I tell you he was at the party with Hope too? I heard that they were dancing together at the parties. Whatever, off topic. If I wear make-up, maybe I can attract people. Or maybe- you know what, forget it. It’s a hope. A dream. I’ll never get noticed. Not if I keep being myself … right? I mean, like, I’ve won many rewards and went to places. But everyone else at school has done that countless times. Even my sister Hope. It’s nothing special. I’m not special. Not like them. What if I can’t be like them? Or like Hope? Or like anyone? Who am I supposed to be?  So I have a question. When will you people notice me? Not the mask I put up for you, a smile that can fool obviously the average person for 15 years. Look closely. I’m the one who’s deprived of a-affection. I’m the one who has a humor and snorts when laughing. The one that’s in the background, chained down by the ignorance of you  people and forced to watch everyone else in the sun. Will you notice me when if I was as skinny as my sister? Will you notice me if I was as pretty as Alana? Will you notice me if I showed the cuts that litter my skin?

I wish Layla was here. It’ll be nice to be seen right about now. Now she’s gone. I lost her to a drunk driver. He survived. Only a few scratches. Not her though. One minute she’s here, the next, she’s in a funeral bed. And I didn’t have enough strength to even go to say my last word to her. I guess why people also like Hope. She knows what to say to others while I can’t say anything to myself…

Layla, if you hear me, I … I’m sorry. For not going to your funeral. For not saying what I wanted to say to you as your spirit was alive there at the time, before I had to adjust life without you. You’ll always be my best friend. I’m glad I have you for a best friend. Because I don’t know who is. Everyone moved on. I’m stuck in one place. I just want to ask you if God tells you if I’ll have a miracle soon. A person like you anytime soon perhaps? A person who’ll notice that I’m in pain. Just let me know in any way you can, ok? Knowing you, you’ll go overboard. Anyway, I’ll listening out for you.

My Sister and I? Twins?

Posted by Chloe Simmons in English 2 · Pahomov · E Band on Friday, September 29, 2017 at 12:43 pm

“Zoe or Chloe?” Tia says.

That’s the million dollar question. Who am I? Am I my sister? Or am I me? We both sigh. We both laugh. We both sag our shoulders. How was I supposed to know that a few shared gestures will cause a conflict of telling the difference between two people?

I want to blame my mother for dressing us up alike as kids. I want to accuse my former self of letting it happen. I wish to blame the people who started the conflict. I blame myself for getting conflicted of who I am.

Zoe’s tall. I’m taller. I have hazel eyes. She has brown eyes. She’s a brown girl. I’m a light skin. I have lighter hair than her. I’m quiet. She’s outgoing. Zoe has her style. I have my own.

“I’m Chloe,” I reply. She expression shows defeat. I show an understanding. I feel disappointed.

For all my life I have to bear through the persistence of people thinking we are alike. We “look the same.” I should dismiss it off nor shouldn’t let it get to me. But that is being said about all black people. We all look alike. We’re black. Big lips. Everything. How am I supposed to ignore a stereotype? Why should I?

I always try to dress differently from my sister, even if I have to express contrastingly or to move from my comfort zone to be noticed. To not be put in the same category as her. My personality is different from her. Everything I do is to get away from the ignorance of people. I’m afraid  I’ll be so consumed into standing out in the crowd, that I will lose the qualities that make me.

There are those few miracles that came to my life where we were separate people. They did not let the words of ignorance devour their ways of greeting. They were able to notice me. The person who I am.

Thursday evening or Sunday meeting, at the end of the meetings, Brother Carter always told us “It’s the Zoe and Chloe Show!” At a young age, I appreciated it. Loved to be part of my sister. Call me selfish, but I want my space; to be separated. I’ve gained my own electronics, school, and even my own room. It’s bad enough that we must share the suffering of ignorance from people.

When I was 10, I remember on a Sunday morning, there was a special meeting in my congregation. The circuit overseer was there. We were going over the Watchtower. I was going to raise my hand for the next question. He looked around the room until he met my eyes. I smiled. I was ready. At least for the Watchtower.

“Zoe please.” He said. I was confused. Zoe was home, sick. I didn’t register at the moment that he was talking about me. Another brother came with the microphone. I took the microphone and gave a deep breath.

“It’s Chloe,” I replied. He gave a look of shock. I felt my mother’s disappointment. I wasn’t sure then why there was such a reaction. I didn’t realize then the hardened gaze I gave nor the venom in my voice. It was little, but enough for it to be known.

Even to this day, I can’t get past the guilt. The fact that I let such emotions escape from the facilities of the mouth and my eyes. The truth many knows, but don’t wish to meet, was the anger I felt of someone who knew me for years to still mistake me for my sister. I took my time into getting to know people, and yet in return, I “influenced” the ongoing struggle to a separate individual. A slap in the face they say.

I sometimes wish I was the only girl, but I know I don’t want it. I love my sister. I just wish we weren’t forced to be tied to the hip bone. I do hope and know there are people that will take the time and see we are two different people. I do wish they find me. The ones of the constant persistence of merging us together. They can stay a distance from me. As long as I know who I am, I should be good.

What is your element? Name and atomic number My element is Germanium and it’s atomic number is 32.
My element, history, function/use and so on. Germanium was discovered in 1886 in Freiberg, Germany by a man named Clemens Winkler. Its symbol is Ge. Germanium is a metalloid. Germanium is used to make transistors for use in electronic devices. Germanium is also used as an alloying agent (adding 1% germanium to silver stops it from tarnishing), in fluorescent lamps and as a catalyst. The element is non-toxic. Fun fact, Germanium is another element that was predicted by Mendeleev in 1871(His predictions for what would be the atomic number, weight, and properties were very close to germanium actual characteristics.). The origin of its name come from a Latin name for Germany, ‘Germania’.
How did you get the idea for the imagery you chose? To get the idea for my print, I had to think of a picture that can relate to my element. Since germanium was used in lamps, I did the design of the candle lamp. Also it the transistors gave me the idea of sketching a phone.
What process did you go through to make this print? Well first I did some research on my element. Next I sketch some drawings and pick the best one that can represent germanium. Then I had to finalize my sketch on a 4x6 paper. Then I had to transfer my drawing onto tracing paper. Next, I did negative and positive drawing onto the styrofoam plate. Finally, I print the image onto paper by printing the image onto the plate, transfer the plate on the paper, rub it into the paper with a wooden spoon, and slowly lift the paper from the plate, leaving the image onto the paper. Then I cut out the image and paste it in the center of a 6x8 inch construction paper.
What would you do differently if you did this print a second time? For one, I would do a little bit more research on my element to get a better understanding. Also, I would redo my negative and positive with my plate, I kind of messed up a bit.
What part of the project did you enjoy the most? Describe the step and what you liked so much about it. The part I like the most was the paint transfer. So first, I had to paint onto the plate and roll it out with a roller. Then I laid it down onto a piece of paper and press down onto the paper with a wooden spoon. Finally, I slowly lift the paper from the plate, leaving the image onto the paper. I really like seeing the outcome when it’s separated. Also, it was quite easy.

So the purpose of this assignment was to create a stamp that represents you. So the way to start the process was to think of ten words that describes me and pick three of those words (My three words being intelligent, simplistic, and distinguish). So after the three words are chosen, I started sketching some ideas for stamps (glasses, an owl, and a peace sign). After that, I decided to do the glasses. So the hardest part for me was to make sure I was able to get the image in my mind out without using so much detail. For example, I used many small lines to create a cracked glass, but they were too small to really cut out. So what I had to do was get rid of the cracked glass idea and drew it in a way so it looked like a piece of the glass is missing. I wouldn’t have never payed attention to that if it wasn’t for negative and positive spacing. Negative and positive spacing helps define a subject and bring balance to the composition. So I had to think if the cracks will do or not. After a while, I decided that it will not and it will be disturbing to the eyes. So to understand negative and positive spacing, I had to read A LOT about it. What really confused me was which was positive spacing and which was negative spacing, so I had to ask others about it and read a bit more. After I got some practice with it, I realized that it depends on how you see it and what the subject is. What I learned from negative and positive spacing was negative and positive spacing helps you figure out if the image has a balanced composition. This stamp is supposed to represent three traits that people described me with, which are intelligent, simplistic, and distinguish. The way my rubber stamp represent my intelligence is by being glasses, since most nerd stereotype is a person wearing glasses. The way my rubber stamp represent simplistic is by the shape of the glasses, since many glasses comes in different shapes and forms and rectangular glasses seems to be the simplistic design of glasses. The way my rubber stamp represent me being distinguished is by half of the glasses being in good shape and the other half in bad condition, since you mostly see either glasses in bad conditions and glasses in good conditions. So I think seeing half of the glasses (or anything in general) is in good condition while the other half hasn't been something different from what it’s usually seen.

A. What is negative space (explain this concept to a fourth grader that has never heard of it)

Negative space is the space around and between an object in a image. It’s like the breathing room around the object that determines how alluring it looks. Negative space helps define itself and bring balance to composition(Composition is used to describe the arrangement of visual elements in an artwork.). Usually negative spacing will be object itself. Just as you see on the left side of this picture.

B. Explain how you found negative space in your cut out?

The first thing I did was cut out the pieces of the picture, since negative spacing is usually cut up in pieces. So in the artwork I did, I cut out the outer part of the tree(the tree bark and grass) and the inner parts of the tree(middle tree, middle tree holes, and bottom holes). After I cut out my pieces, I flipped the cut out pieces over and lined them up to make a whole tree. After that, I glued them to the paper. Finally, I was able to identify my negative spacing is the left half of the tree and my positive spacing is the right half of the tree.

C. Why does it help an artist to see in negative space?

One reason why it helps an artist to see in negative spacing is because it allows them to see if the image is too crowded or not. Also, it gives the artist a new perspective on the artwork. For example, Rubin’s Vase image. Without the negative spacing, it looks like a vase. With negative and positive spacing, you can see the vase and two faces facing each other.

D. Does seeing in negative space enhance drawings, why or why not

Seeing artwork in negative space does enhance drawings because it allows to see different features to the artwork more than when it shows it regularly. The audience can see the detail for each shape of the picture instead of one big artwork.

What is printmaking/Why is printmaking important?

Posted by Chloe Simmons in Art - Freshman · Hull · c1 Band on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at 3:29 pm
Printmaking is a form of art where pictures are printed by transferring it to a paper using a block, stone, etc. Printmaking was invented in the 15th century in Europe by a man named Daniel Hopfer. Really, this technique goes back to 3000 B.C.E., when it was engraved on bones, cave walls, and stones. There are many different types of printmaking. One is relief printing. Relief printing is when the ink sits on the surface and not in the grooves. It does not require chemicals nor does it require any press. Another example is Intaglio printing, which is the opposite of relief printing. Intaglio printing is when the ink is pressed into the etched lines while wiping the remaining ink off the surface. Printmaking was revolutionary because it made it easier for artist to express their art more to the audience, a way to duplicate things instead of redoing it from scratch, a way for artist to expand their imagination and mind, and it was easier for the people to obtain their art.
Pablo Picasso, Les vendangeurs (The Grape Harvesters), 1959

This artwork is a form of printmaking called linocut created by Pablo Picasso in 1959. This printmaking, it shows two workings that seems to be taking a break from something. In the left corner, you can see a bag of grapes. You can also notice that the landscape are hills. There’s also a lizard there.

The print definitely shows a contrast between the darker colors and the lighter color. You can see the different textures from looking between the sky, land, and people so they don’t blend in fully. There are lines that seems to have a roughness to it as you can see it through the sky and lines that have a softness as you can see that through the land and people.

I think this print is trying to show two hard-working people on a break from harvesting. For the title, it seems they were harvesting grapes. It also might infer that the bag is filled with grapes. The person on the right looks like they’re eating grapes while the person on the left look like they’re just relaxing. Based on the colors in the background, it seems to be evening.

For this print, I would improve is the positive spacing. There were some spots that had a bit too much positive space and it was disturbing to my eye. The spots makes it look like it’s incomplete. Also, I would improve the texture of the lines. In the print, the person on the on the left kind of blends in with the land and a blanket and it made my eyes a bit disturbed with the confusion of what is what. I love how he uses earthy shades of ochre, brown and black to make it like a soft and content setting.

New Chloe Simmons- Reflection

Me Magazine- Revised
For this project, I've learned how to make an advertisement. I've also learned the basic rules you need to know in order to make a good advertisement. Also, I learned how to present my advertisement using the right vocabulary. So, as you can see, I've made MANY changes. As you may notice, I've made the words bigger and one solid color so it can be eye-catching and it contrast with the background. Before, it was the different colors an it made it hard to see letters from words over other letters form the words. Also, you may notice that I've rearranged the photos I did for this project. I've got rid of the picture of myself, since it was really unnecessary. I've made the pictures into a collage so it would look more organized and not make the slide seem cramp. I also made the pictures solid so it can be seen. Before, the pictures were all over the place and disorganized, making it look like the slide was done at the last minute. Also, the all the pictures were made transparent and it was hard to see pictures over other pictures. You may also notice that most are on or near the rules of thirds so the eye can immediately go to those spots. Before, everything was all over the place and it made it unpleasant to the eye. Also, the negative space helps also in this slide. For me to be able to do this, I had to do RESEARCH. Yes my friend, research is VERY important when you are doing this. It will help you with your presentation and when creating your slide, paper work, etc.  If you didn't do yours... you won't be getting that A+ anytime soon. Good luck to you buddy.

Chloe-Media Fluency

Tech- Me Magazine Slide

To start off, I will talk about what I mean with this quote, as many of you may wonder. What I am  trying to say is while I accept you are you, accept that I am me. The reason why I say this is because in the past, people always have question what I do and who I am. Before I enlighten on it, let me tell you about myself, you can look at the three  pictures that describes me as I speak. First one, I am a JW. The people who be knocking on your door. I don’t celebrate any holidays...at all. I love art. And I don’t mean by just painting I also mean the art of literature, music, writing, etc. Also, I’m a geek/nerd. I LOVE transformers, marvel, dc, etc. I can talk to you it about it all day with someone and I don’t mind learning anything new from it. Also, I can either dress like...this or nice and formal. Depends on the day. Finally, I would love to travel the whole world one day, just to see how the beauty of it. Now that you know a little about me, let me talk about the slide. When I was doing my research, I notice that I had to have a theme. I thought about it for awhile, what will be my theme. I’d tried multiple websites to find one just for me. But then, I had to stop… the themes weren’t what I created, that they’re not mine. So I made my own, evolve around the quote you see up on the board. I said this quote because throughout life, I’ve been question in what I like to do, or what I like to wear, or who I am in general. Moving on, you might notice the different font and pattern of color for the letters. The reason for that is to show you that this is what I am or what someone else could be. For example, imagine someone typing like this all the time. It regular font but the color of the text is blue. From that person’s point of view, it’s their things, it’s what normal to them. But to another person's point of view, it will be a bit weird. They would either see you differently from afar or try to change you, peer pressure. Either way, whether they meant to or not, they’re judging. Now let's look into the background I pick, which is a variety of colors. This shows that even though all my traits are good and bad, they all are what I see me. Just like you  have good and bad traits, it’s what you identify yourself as. Few things I would've done differently was getting rid of ‘Geeky Girl’, being it was too much. Also, make the text colors of the letters match up with the background a bit, since, to me, I did give the message, but I could’ve made them fit with it and also show the message I’d gave. So this was my presentation, I hope you all liked it, and thank you for your time.

My Home Network

Posted by Chloe Simmons in Technology - Freshman · Hull · c2 Band on Friday, October 14, 2016 at 10:00 am

During this time in Tech, we were ask to explain our home network. I have a Modem/Router that is connected to the World Wide Web(WWW) by a ISP Fiber Optic. I get my wifi from Verizon, which goes to the Modem/Router. Every device is connected to that wifi, except for my printer, which is connected to the Modem/Router by a printer cord. What I learn out of this is that the network is more connected than I thought. Just looking from my own network told me that we really are connected more ways than we can think of. My advice to people, is to do your research when picking a service provider. They can play you real dirty.
