Like last quarter, I used digital as the medium for all my drawings.  It's good practice after all.  Speaking of good practice, I found the Figure Drawing assignment to be very helpful in drawing women.  I haven't got much practice drawing the female form so the assignment gave me a reason to actually do so.  I also haven't been consistently using outlining when drawing figures, so it was also helpful in the sense that it made me realize the importance of drawing outlines and then adding everything on top.
Both the Line and Texture Drawings helped me practice drawing small details.  Trying to create the illusion of feathers and fur was what i was mainly trying to learn, but it was also very helpful to learn how to draw things like the texture of vegetables (i.e. peppers, onions, etc.).  The Value Drawing let me explore the textures found in the "brush library" of my digital drawing program as well.
The Illusion of Space Drawing helped me with.  .  . well, the illusion of space.  More specifically, it helped me draw hands that are in the foreground, and the body in the background.  It was also good practice for shading, even if all the effort of shading was only on the hand.  Either way, that's all I really did to make the drawing look third dimensional.  Because of that, I was worried anything else would look bad, so I just did the same thing for the Elements of Art Drawing, which is somewhat disappointing.  I thought it came out nice anyway, so I'm not complaining.

I was very excited for this quarter in art, as this was going to be the very first time I could use my computer for art.  I was a little bit disappointed the first time I was going to use my computer for art since the first assignment upon getting was one that required a specific art medium, that being pencil and paper.  But when I was finally able to use it for the mandalas, it was a whole lot of fun.  Being able to use so many tools and colors at my fingertips was what sold me on digital art.
I've also gotten better at shading since last quarter, but it's not just because of my computers versatility.  Although my computer had the bigger impact on my shading abilities, there were two assignments that also helped, them being the optical illusions and shading forms.  It's very easy to see why these assignments had the impact they had on me, as both were literally lessons on shading.  Along with shading, these assignments have gotten me to start drawing in 3 dimensions more than I did before.
I believe this quarter to be the best for my artwork so far, but not just for school work.  I don't mean to sound like a broken recorder, but my artistry has truly gotten better since gaining the ability to draw online and I've been able to start focusing on a goal that I doubted I would even do at all, which was starting my portfolio for college.  Of course, I don't think my artwork is college ready now that I have the means to draw on a screen.  But it was a big step for me and combined with the lessons from this art class, and the stuff I've doing outside of school, will get me even further.

This quarter wasn't necessarily a first for me when it comes to new mediums of art, but that doesn't mean that they were well practiced.  Doing an entire art piece with paint is definitely something I'm not used to, and it shows in my work.  The defined edges, the lack of blending and smooth colors, clear signs of a beginner.  This was also the first time I ever really TRIED shading.  I didn't really like how it turned, but it was definitely better than it would've been if I didn't get help from my brother.
I also realized that my photography is... not good.  The picture's are either too blurry or have too much outside lighting (meaning light from lamps and such).  I think the best art piece I shot this quarter was the "Ding Dong" one, but I don't really like the quality of that picture either.  I'm dying for a method of drawing on the computer.  That way, I don't have to take pictures with my phone's crappy camera.  From what I've seen, the drawings also look a lot slicker / nicer than they would if I used a paper and pencil.  It might even help me with shading, but I doubt it'll help much.  
Overall, even though I felt like I did better work than I did last quarter, I was a lot more disappointed with it.  As I mentioned before, this mainly stemmed from my lack in usage of the mediums we were asked to use.  But at the very least, this was an eye-opener on how much effort I must put into what I do now if I even want the chance to get into an art college.

Artist's Statement:
The main inspiration for my artwork is anime and manga.  I've always loved the style of anime, and I've even adopted a few of the techniques used in the medium.  Another inspiration would be animals.  Not real-life animals so to speak, but fictional animals/creatures that have real-world inspiration.
I mainly like to use pencil, but I have used pen on multiple occasions throughout my sketching career.  I do want to change my habit of drawing in pencil for the sake of honing my skills in different mediums and to give my sketchbooks more "color".  Speaking of color, this marking period was the first time I've actually used multiple colors to fill an entire page on my sketchbook.  I can't exactly remember any other time I've used different colors on more than just a character so this was new territory for me.
I spent most of my time doing the assigned art project during our "studio time".  There was the occasional point where I took a break and did homework, listened to music, and/or read a book.  When doing work outside of "studio time", on the other hand, was very annoying.  It wasn't because it was hard to draw in the conditions (since I finished most of my work in class) but it was because it was such a nuisance to take a picture of my art pieces.  The lighting would always be bad, sometimes using Snapseed (a photo editing app) would make it look worse, a whole bunch would go wrong basically.  I would mostly put the blame on my phone since it's such an old model and its functionality grows weaker and weaker by the day.
One of the most important things an artist wants a viewer to understand is all the hard work he or she put into making their masterpieces and I hope you see that in my work.  So please enjoy the slideshow!

Final Stamp Design

​ The name of my element is Chromium and it's Atomic Number is 24. It was first discovered by Louis-Nicholas Vauquelin in 1797.  While experimenting on something called Siberian red lead (crocoite), he mixed it with hydrochloric acid to create Chromium.  Chromium's main use is for making vehicle parts for cars and bicycles.  It's most interesting use, however, is that it's used in the making of many pigments.  A form of Chromium was also used on Terracotta Warrior's weapons to keep them from rusting.
The reason I chose to make my stamp resemble a pile of pigment was because that use of Chromium was so interesting to me.  Making a car or bike stamp seemed too boring to me and making a pigment pile was rather simplistic to draw so I decided to go with the second idea.  Then I had to make a final design on another piece of paper, which would be used to trace onto a piece of foam (it's easy to create divots in it so when painted over lines will appear) which would be used for the actual stamp.  During the  process I had to redraw it because it was too small and I never got a really smooth looking print so that was a bit annoying.
If I could do the print all over again, I would probably make the design a bit more complex.  After finishing this project, and looking at everybody else's, it made me think I did too little.  I would also probably want to try making the prints again.  The prints all had some imperfection about them and were never covered completely in a smooth layer of red paint.  It was all rather problematic to me.  What I DID enjoy about the project was creating the designs for the print. It was fun to make creative ways to convey what your element was.

The reason the Stamp symbolizes me, is mainly because of the two things inside the ring, the sparrow and the pencil it is holding.  I chose to use the sparrow because birds are my favorite type of animal and that they typically represent freedom.  But I chose the pencil because it represents most of what I love, drawing.  Put them together and you could say it represents the freedom of drawing whatever I want.  
The first step of this project was to choose three things that represent me.  The first two I chose were, of course, drawing and freedom, but the last one was a little bit more subtle.  It was being a perfectionist.  That's why I wanted to make the stamp look as professional as possible, making it take a little bit longer than expected.
Negative and Positive Space are very important to making a picture pop and making it more noticeable.  I thought I used this very well because the colors contrast from each other so much.  Throughout the creation, I got stuck a couple of times.  The most notable point was when I accidently cut through the ring.  I had to think fast, so I decided to just redo the ring all over again.  
Before this project, I didn't really know or at least remember anything about Negative and Positive Space.  But now I know how truly important these techniques are both in drawing and photography.

Defining Negative Space

​Negative space is the space around and between an image that can help create that image or make it pop out.  White and Black are the typical colors you would use for Negative space because they contrast each other so much.  You can use other colors, however, as long as they make the other visible.  

You can find Negative Space in my cut out thanks to the contrast of Yellow and Black.  By using these colors, you can clearly see the shape of an owl, which is how Negative Space is supposed to be used.  

By using Negative Space, an artist can more easily define what the subject of their picture, drawing, and/or painting is.   This “defining” is not limited to the artist, however, for it also helps the observer more easily define what or who the subject is.  

I personally believe that Negative Space does in fact enhance a drawing, mainly for the fact that it makes the image pop. When you can clearly define what is the negative and space is, the artist and the observer can more easily tell what the artist was trying to depict. It's also just a really interesting and fun way to make art. Using Negative/Positive Space takes a lot more intelligence than just drawing something which is what really grabs my interest in this technique.

The Beauty of Printmaking

​Today, Printmaking is used as an art technique in which you etch a design on a piece of wood, stone, or other material and are able to transfer that design onto a piece of paper.  It is used for more than just making art pieces, however.  For example, it is used to make the design for every dollar bill in America.
    The first etching ever found (and possibly created) was during the Ice Age on bones and cave walls.  Duplicating an etching was not actually used until around 3000 BCE by the Sumerians.  Only stone cylinders were used back then, but more and more materials were being used as time went on and by many different cultures.  Like how wood was first used by the Japanese back in 764 CE.  Techniques of making Printmaking have also branched off to make unique styles.  Such techniques as Relief, Lithographing, Intaglio, etc.  Printmaking may be used mainly just for art nowadays, but it was, in fact, a revolutionary technique used by scholars, scientists, and designers alike. The reason it was so revolutionary, was because it was the first method ever that allowed people to copy a design/information that someone's created, without having to make/write it all over again.
    Printmaking allows such works as the one above to be made.  I notice how by using the contrast of the Black and White, it gives the owl such a shadowy and creepy feel.  The shadowy characteristic may also be thanks to how he/she used White as the outlining, and Black to fill in the negative space.  I wonder what I would feel if the colors reversed.  Would I still feel the creepiness of the menacing Black eyes?  What if it was a different animal? Would I feel a different emotion if it was a squirrel, even if he/she used the same method?

What I learned from this project was all the different methods of making slade, billboard, and/or photo. I didn’t even realize how much the “Rule of Thirds” really had to do with photography and symmetry. Though that may just because I had never heard the term, “Rule of Thirds” before this project. I also was able to sharpen my skills in contrasting colors.

The main problem with my previous design, and the main thing the audience had a problem with, was the bottom right text. I meant it to be a joke to show I don’t like to take everything serious but I later realized that it was a distraction to the point of the slide. So I decided to get rid of the text entirely so people can focus more on the message in the (more pleasing) center of the slide. Besides that, everybody thought it was a pretty good slide so I decided to keep everything else the same.

The research into making this was very important to me since I never would have realized the importance of the “Rule of Thirds” and contrasting colors. That being said, research is important for anything project related if you want it to be as effective as possible.

One Slide Presentation

In order to make an effective slide I had to make sure I used as little wording as possible, but not to the point where I'm just saying nouns.  And the color of the text had to be pop or at least contrast to the background, but I didn't want to make the text just one color, so I decided to put pop and contrast together.  The text also had to be legible so I made the text bigger.  And as the artist I am, I decided to make it more "artistic" and more complex than just writing some "inspirational" quote down, so I separated the passage in half and put a pen in between. You know, to represent what I use for drawing.  Speaking of being an artist, the main theme of the slide surrounds how much I love to draw.  Even in the future I hope to get a profession of designing. Specifically things like art direction in games. Simplicity can be complex, and I just wanted to express that.  Even the smallest of details can have a deeper meaning to someone.

  • All the devices that uses our internet are computers and phones. then there are our tablets, Apple TV, and gaming consoles.
  • I didn’t really have an OMG moment when researching on this topic, but I guess I learned more on how my internet works (like how it is distributed).
  • I would tell other people that it will be very expensive and should be wise on what they do on the internet.
