Relationships Can Be Changed But Not Tamed
(Comparing "Taming of the Shrew" to "Date Night") The book “The Taming of The Shrew” follows the story of three men, Hortensio, Lutencio and Petruchio, and two women, Bianca and Katherine, who struggle to find a romance in the city of Padua. More in particular, the character named Petruchio is determined to marry the daughter of Baptista; Katherine. Petruchio, desperately going to any lengths to make Katherine his wife, will also attempt to change her in the process. Both the movie Date Night and Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew demonstrate the idea that starting a relationship and changing a pre-existing one cannot simply be forced upon. “Forward, I pray, since we have come so far, And be it moon, or sun, or what you please; And if you please to call it a rush-candle, Henceforth I vow it shall be so for me.” (Act 4, Sc. 5, 14) To tame Kate, Petruchio uses psychological methods, rather than aggressive or barbaric ones. Using highly sophisticated, psychological methods to tame Katherine allow her to keep her witty personality while remaining happy with Petruchio. In this scene, Petruchio makes a comment about the moon being so bright while Katherine attempts to assure him its not nighttime yet. Petruchio argues with Kate and Hortensio insists to Katherine that she simply agrees with him or else they arguement will not end. Petruchio controls Katherine in order to have the marriage he wants. As for Phil and Claire Foster, they want to continue to have a healthy marriage and will do anything to do so. In this scene of Date Night, Phil Foster and Claire Foster are on their way to a restaurant for their night out. Forcing themselves to feel better about the situation, they both try to make each other feel comfortable in the situation. “Then, God be bless'd, it is the blessed sun; But sun it is not, when you say it is not; And the moon changes even as your mind. What you will have it nam'd, even that it is, And so it shall be so for Katherine. “ (Act 4, Sc. 5, 21) After being in the argument about the moon and sun, Petruchio successfully gets Katherine to agree to his opinion. This scene symbolizes the two characters and their relationship throughout the entire play. Petruchio wants to maintain the marriage he wants and is not afraid to change Katherine in order to do so. In result, it forms an unhealthy relationship. In this scene of Date Night, Phil and Claire arrive late to a fancy restaurant and are not able to get a table. While waiting in line for a table, Phil takes somebody else’s reservations so that him and his wife are able to enjoy their date night. Phil wants to rekindle the relationship between him and his wife and is willing to do anything to make sure its secure. This scene not only presents the plot to the story line, but a comedic backdrop to remind the audience of it’s genre. While both Petruchio and Phil Foster wanted to perfect the relationship they both strived for, neither relationship was mended with the actions the characters took. In conclusion, both the movie Date Night and Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew demonstrate the idea that starting a relationship and changing a pre-existing one cannot simply be forced upon. |
Q2: Self and the Changing World
Analytical Essay:
Unfortunately we as humans are forced to adapt to change in order to continue living. In The Yellow Birds, Bartle serves as a machine gunner in Iraq with his friend Murch while keeping a promise to his best friends Mother. Promising to bring Murph home and to keep him safe. Bartle’s responsibilities are now altered for now he must take care of two people instead of one; himself and Murph. With a new weight on him shoulders, Bartle is hit with another level of anxiety and stress. Everyday life is always at a constant state of change. We as humans have no choice but to adapt to this change especially if it changes for the worse. As a result of choosing to adapt to change, humans live a melancholic lifestyle as a part of them still living in the past.
In order to accept change, the person needs to accept the future leave the past behind. However it is not always the easiest thing for a person to comprehend. “I didnt want to believe that I was watching the actions of someone who was already dead, so I searched for evidence that would contradict this; I searched for some grasp, at least, at life.” (p.159) Bartle doesn’t want to believe that Murph was gone. Even when Bartle went to go talk to his sergeant, the Sergeant basically shut him down and told him to give up on Murph.
A quote of Kevin Powers is “As human beings, we have the blessing and the curse that we're able to adapt to almost anything. No matter how extreme the circumstances you're in, they become normal.” How quickly one can adapt to any type of situation is a skill most if not all soldiers require while serving. Powers is trying to get across that all soldiers are faced with physical and mental pain and they have no choice but to adapt to the melancholy environment.
In conclusion, Kevin Powers’s message through the book is how fast something can change and how humans adapt to the environment. That change come unexpected and no matter how extreme the circumstances are, they eventually become normal.2fer Revision
There has been an ongoing conflict over the banning of marijuana but the majority of people seems to be concerned over the fact that cigarettes are still legal. Understanding that marijuana gets people high and there is still a debate over if it should be legalized. With alcohol it is used for celebration and other activities, but the common message towards alcohol is to not abuse it and the same goes for marijuana. There is not a legitimate reason as to why the tobacco companies are not shut down. Smoking is just as bad as any other drug and does not do any good. Cigarettes are not illegal because of their successful marketing.
It is one of the most addictive substances that it is on the same ranking of heroin. It is so addictive it makes smokers unpaid tobacco spokespersons for tobacco companies. According to truth.com - a website/organization focused on ending ciggerette smokers - runs commercials on mtv often. The website focuses on celebrities smoking and how it does nothing but help the tobacco companies. It also gives facts about the tobacco industries such as; “On their websites, tobacco companies encourage people to quit smoking. However, in 2006, a court found that tobacco companies manipulate nicotine levels to keep smokers addicted. The tobacco industry spends more than $24 million each day marketing its products in the U.S. alone.” In March of 2006, tobbacofreekids.org had a press release on their website concerning the tobacco industries trying to shut down truth.com. “The real reason the tobacco companies are so anxious to destroy Legacy's effective and hard-hitting truth® advertising campaign is because these ads keep kids from smoking by telling them the truth about how the tobacco industry has targeted them and deceived them about the harm caused by tobacco use.”
The whole plot of smoking that makes the industries so effective and successful. The addictiveness of the nicotine inside the actual cigarette that keeps people going back to buy them. Along with the fact that cigarettes are being used by either celebrities and others in the media, it gives the tobacco industries even more attention and publicity. Even with the attempts to shut them down and prove the industry is corrupt, they are still not illegal because of the successful marketing to back them up. When asked, tobacco industries might say that it is the smokers fault for choosing to do so, But on closer inspection, due to their marketing of cigarettes, it's giving people more reason to smoke.

History Portfolio
As the year comes to an end, I have come realize my strengths and weaknesses that I still need to work on for next year. I have always been bad under even the smallest bit of pressure. As we were introduced to Sophomore year’s history class, it forced me to do things I wasnt entirely comfortable with. First off; working with groups. During the Cortez trial, we were given groups and put in a courtroom to be prosecuted. My group, the Cortezs, were obviously the most guilty which made it all the more difficult. I volunteered to be a prosecutor and I went up with my knees shaking. Presenting in front of a group is one thing, but prosecuting against a group is another thing. Knowing that I am not the smartest person in the class, I was feeling the pressure. It all ended smoothly, although I wish I was a bit more organized when I went up. From doing the trial, I have come to understand that collaboration requires patience and organization. With a little more organization, I would have been able to execute the prosecution more properly. My main weakness is speaking in class. I am not exactly sure why I have the biggest fear or expressing my own opinions, I guess I am just afraid of embarrassing myself or being proved incorrect. Although, I feel confident when it comes to making video projects. In the beginning of the year, we were assigned a project to make a monolog about a pipeline. (VIDEO HERE) I am not under pressure when making a video, it is a lot more relaxing and stress free. I felt I did well on that video. Also, in the middle of the year we were assigned to research different revolutions along with an essential question to elaborate off of. We also had to make a video for that project (VIDEO HERE.) I feel like I did a solid job with those videos, I was organized and well prepared with my research. Lastly, for my journal entries. I have always loved creating journal entries because I am able to express my own opinions and not have anyone see them except the teachers. I am able to get constructive feedback and not have to worry about others seeing it. On journal 55, we were given a small sheet entitled “Does Process Matter?” A small part of my journal entry reads; Process matters in the sense of organization. Depending on what you are trying to achieve, the process can determine how ready you are and how organized you need to be. Another journal we had to write was about why religion causes conflicts. I wrote; Religion would not cause conflicts if we understood each religion. It’s because we are uninformed or not educated in every religion. We are brought up knowing if not one religion, no religion at all. If we a brought up knowing only one religion, the only we will truly understand is our own. If we understood other’s beliefs, maybe we can understand each other.

Keystone Pipeline Monologues
The Keystone Pipeline is a project in which Trans Canada has been working on for months. The pipeline will carry oil all the way from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and will create many new jobs and boost the economy. It is an idea to make oil more efficient and transportable to places all over the US. Although, there are some problems slowing down production when it comes to actually building the pipeline.
Part II:
-The pipeline runs from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico
-Its proposed for 7 million dollars
-It makes oil more efficient
-It's owned by Trans-Canada
-830,000 barrels of oil per day.

Monologue #1
(Husband sitting at the dinner table with his wife.) Sweetie pass the mashed potatoes please, thank you. How was your day? Mine was swell I guess. Can I have the salt? Thanks. (Fidgets with salt shaker.) Me? No, no i’m fine. I’m just.. I dunno, I think i’m just a little frustrated. Nothings wrong with me, but I need to tell you somethin’ thats buggin’ me. I was watching the news today.. you know bout the, uhh, what’s it called.. Keystone pipeline thing? Okay, promise now to throw a fit? Because I know you will. Well the pipeline is gonna run through our farm, I just found out today. Why would I be joking? They are making us tear down our shed for the pipeline can run through.. Why the hell is this my fault?! It’s not like I built the damn thing. It’s running from Canada all the way to the Gulf of Mexico, and it’s gonna pass through here. Well what am I supposed to do? Go to the big man and protest like a teenage rebel? Just cause i’m the man of the house doesn’t mean I gotta do everything thats hard by myself in this fricken house. Why don’t you get off your lazy ass and do it yourself. What? I can’t just stand here and do nothing. I don’t do anything?! You know what hun, i’m not feeling very hungry. Yeah, yeah whatever. Don’t expect me to clean up your shit.
Monologue #2
(Keystone Pipeline talking to itself.) Why do I get the feeling like i’m in everybody’s way? I mean, it’s not like I chose to be built, or run through anyone’s property, or cause any sort of damage in that case. Am I for better or for worse? I feel like unnecessary and problematic. Although, i’m getting oil to the right places, and faster too! They’re plenty of good things that will happen when i’m finished being built. But.. wait.. am I killing the environment? No of course not i’m helping it.. I think. If I we’re to just hear what people think about me I would feel a lot better. Although, I can hear them talking about me while they’re building me, some are negative, some are positive, which is why I do not know what I truly am? A burden? Or a gift? Maybe i’m just another issue, another issue that the States have to deal with. Or.. maybe i’m a another gift! A gift to the American people. Man, I dont even know anymore. My
Monologue #3
(Teacher starting class) Hi everyone, how was your guy’s weekends? Thats good, what’d you guys do? I guess thats more than I can say I did (chuckles). Just by a show of hands, how many of you are familiar with the Keystone Pipeline? Everyone make sure you can see the screen i’m going to show you a quick video on the Pipeline. (Video played.) So as you guys can see the Keystone Pipeline is gonna be fairly hazardous to Earth’s environment. Oil adds more pollution. Well yes, we have some extra access to it, nothing more. It’s just another problem we have to deal with. Any show of hands to give their opinion on what we just watched? Yes, Joshua. Umm.. I guess in a way thats correct, but the Pipeline still carries more.. uhh.. bad oil?.. Yeah.. yes? Yes Steve would you like to say something? I'm not making it look bad (chuckles) Maybe i'll just show this to you tomorrow..

IRP: Yesterday Erased

Independent Reading Book: Yesterday Erased
Yesterday Erased by Andrew Schrock follows young teenager by the name of Drew Thomas. Throughout the book it shows Drew’s transformation from a comic-book nerd, to a member of the Cincinnati skateboarding scene. The book starts out by him writing to himself while he is alone at a party, sitting on a couch. He writes about how he came to be what he is today and slowly begins to review his life all the way back to being 14, which is where the book truly begins. First, it shows how Drew comes to be a skater, and then slowly shows his interest in girls and the party life. As he is crossed between staying true to skateboarding or joining his delinquent friends, he searches for the way he best fits in and most enjoys.
The author if this book; Andrew Schrock based Yesterday Erased off of his life growing
up. This was actually the first piece of real writing he has ever written, he quotes “This is my first piece of true writing. As I can remember, I only wrote half of a term paper in high school.” Andrew Schrock is not only an author, he also owns and operates his own skateboard company; ReVive skateboards, and he is also a YouTube partner that delivers videos daily.
I have been following Andrew Schrock for four years now, and I am proud to say that he is one of my idols to look up too. For four years, Schrock has been delivering skateboard videos of himself and his friends and has also been making video on the right choices to make in life, in other words; how to stay positive and never give up. When he first started, he had to work 3 jobs including making YouTube videos on the side. After a year of making videos, he became a YouTube partner and began to make money from every video he made, he was then able to quit two of the jobs he had. From the years of following him, I have watched him gain not only a major amount of popularity and respect, but also has made enough money off YouTube to
support his fiance and newborn son. He now has gained so much popularity over YouTube
that he was able to quit the other jobs he had.
In Yesterday Erased, he describes his life as a kid then growing up all the way to the point of him being twenty years old. Him being an actual skater in real life, he talks about real skateboarding, and what an everyday life of a skateboarder is truly like. I may have said this in my last independent book review, but this one is truly relatable. It may be based off skateboarding, but it also focuses on the social status of an everyday teenager. Partying, girls, and seeking the sense of respect and belonging.
Considering all of the positive feedback I recently stated, there is one con to the book; it goes very fast. Through the first chapter, he does not give a lot of background knowledge about who he is prior to his skate life. He writes about his everyday life; going to school, then going to the comic shop, go home and play videogames, then repeat. His daily agenda gets to be a little
too repetitive and redundant without any other side information.
Further more after that, Drew begins to shift into finding himself and slowly makes
friends that he can all relate too. Basing his character off Drew Thomas, Andrew Schrock writes his life through his perspective without almost no flaws. It is a fast read with plenty of
cliffhangers in each chapter and relatable teenage trauma. Definitely one to order and read for yourself, you will not regret it!

Blog Post #3
Hello everybody, as most of you know my name is Joseff Filamor. I am a Freshmen at Science Leadership Academy and for my You and the World project I am focusing of the war in Afghanistan. If you have not already seen my previous blog posts, I focused on what affects a warrior when he goes into war, and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. My brother; Guz Filamor served in Afghanistan for two years and is the reason I chose to research Afghanistan in the first place. For my third and final blog post, my brother agreed to an interview.
I recorded the conversation and I wrote it out here for you all to read:
Me: What made you want to join in a military lifestyle?
Guz: Well back in the day, our Pops was pretty hardcore when it came to what we were gonna become in life. He thought the only way to become a full man was to become one through pain and humility.
Me: Did you ever want to join?
Guz: A big part of me did not want to do it at all, but I did not really have a choice.
Me: Are you went through with it?
Guz: I can tell you this, it didn’t leave me a better man. In fact it made me worse considering I had to watch men die in front of me. Although, it did make me appreciate life a lot more. I come home to my family knowing I am blessed to be there to see them.
Me: Did it impact you in anyway?
Guz: Yes it really did, I had a brief case of PTSD and I am still going to therapy to get remove it from my mind.
Me: Anything advice to kids today in hope of joining the military lifestyle?
Guz: Keep your mind straight and have a good reason to join. Do it for your family and country, not for yourself.
I had never asked my brother about Afghanistan or what it was like, but it is interesting seeing what it is like from his point of view.
I am beyond glad that I was able to do the You and the World project on Afghanistan. Ever since my father first told me about my brother being in it, I have always had an open mind for it.
This had definitely been one of the best and favorite projects, thanks Ms Dunn and Guz for helping me all the way through.

I found negative space by first drawing the outline of each object I saw. For my negative space cut out project, I chose to do a tree. I cut out the half of the tree then I used the excess cut outs for the other side.
Negative Space is important because it helps the artist know what he is drawing even without the detail. Even without the detail, he can still make the shape similar to the object. It helps see what the actual shape looks like, giving it creativity from another point of view.

The Afghanistan War: The War on Terror Pt. 2
January 11, 2013
My name is Joseff Filamor. If you have not seen my LAST blog post, I am here to talk to you about the Afghanistan war; the war on terror. I last discussed what the War on Terror was about and why we should end it. I also discussed how both the troops and families are affected by stress due to the war. Today, I will discuss the most common illness that veterans inherit over the years after war, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Here compares a normal brain to a brain under PTSD.Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder can occur after a life-threatening event like military combat, natural disasters, terrorist incidents, serious accidents, or violent personal assaults like rape. Most survivors of trauma return to normal given a little time.
Although others can have stress disorders over a longer period of time, and could get worse over time. PTSD can cause victims to have nightmares, trouble sleeping, flashbacks or strong amounts of depression. These symptoms can obviously impair a person's daily life.
Everyone reacts to traumatic events differently. Each person is unique in his or her ability to deal with fear and stress and to cope with the threat posed by a traumatic event or situation. For that reason, not everyone who experiences or witnesses a trauma will develop PTSD. The type of help and support a person receives from friends, family members and professionals following the trauma may influence the development of PTSD or the number of symptoms.
Most people who experience a traumatic event will have reactions that may include shock, anger, nervousness, fear, and even guilt. These reactions are common; and for most people, they go away over time. For a person with PTSD, however, these feelings continue and even increase, becoming so strong that they keep the person from living a normal life. People with PTSD have symptoms for longer than one month and cannot function as well as before the event happened.
PTSD is most common within troops after they come back from war. All the more reason that the war on terror should end.If you have the time please click HERE to watch a twenty minute episode of the show "The War Within." In the episode it shows 4 troops all suffering from PTSD. It shows PTSD from their perspective.

Book Review & Movie Trailer: Skate
December 20, 2012
Skate Book Review
Skate by Michael Harmon, follows young skater Ian McDermott. While being a junior in highschool and juggling skateboarding with school work, Ian is also raising his younger brother, Sammy, while his Mom is out on her drinking binges. Sammy is also a very talented skateboarder, but at the same time has several problems keeping him from skating with his older brother. He attends Special Ed classes while also going to regular school, and has a hard time dealing with authority. Both Sammy and Ian are growing up without a father. At school, Ian is hated by the majority of his teachers. He ends up punching and knocking out his coach. The stress end up being too much for him, which leaves him with only one choice; leave with Sammy.
Being a skater myself, it is easy to relate to Skate. It’s a perfect example of what the average skateboarder has to deal with. Whether it’s having to deal with authority hassle us or anything related. Although, even if you are not a skater, Skate is still a relatable book. The book relates to skateboarders just as it does to non-skaters. It addresses the bond between brothers, redemption and teen rage. Skate is the perfect combination of situations which makes it relatable to any reader. The book talks about average everyday problems including bigger ones that even the reader wouldn’t be used to hearing, at least I have not.
Although, do not just real the book if you are interested in skating and nothing else. I wouldn't say Skate does not address the life of a skater, but it doesn't do the it justice.
In most cases, it does, but Skate doesn't talk about tricks, sponsorships, or filming of any kind. (Basic skateboarding side hobbies.)
Michael Harmon wanted to portray the life of a teenager with life problems, not a
skater. The book is based off of skateboarding but the skate references are not relevant to reallife skaters. When skateboarding comes up in the book, the only things Ian and Sammy say
are “Grind,” “Ollie” or “180.” Specific tricks rarely ever come up.
Don’t get me wrong, you will enjoy Skate even without true skate references. It is now probably my favorite book that I have ever read. Skate is relatable in so many different
aspects. I highly recommend Skate to anyone interested in adventure, drama or skateboarding.
My visual for this project in a trailer based off of the book. I use a song I believe is a perfect match for the book, clips from movies that are relatable to Skate, and a little creative editing. Enjoy! Video HERE

The Afghanistan War, the War on Terror.
The Afghanistan War/ The War on Terror
My name is Joseff Filamor, I am a Freshman studying at Science Leadership Academy. For my English class, my teacher, Ms. Dunn, introduced the You and the World project to us. It is an opportunity for the kids at Science Leadership Academy to share what they think is important, then try to change the situation for the better through blogging.
On September 11, 2001, attacks were made on the Twin Towers. Killing approximately three- thousand people. This started the war in Afghanistan, in which troops are dying more and more everyday. I am very interested by this topic because my brother was once a troop in Afghanistan, and I feel as if I need to learn more about it. Also, I feel that not that many people know the full detail of the war and the effects it has on the world. Having said that, I will explain the details of the Afghanistan War on terror.
Everyday, troops and being deployed to Afghanistan, more and more each day. Causing their families stress and worries, and leaving troops either seriously injured or dead. When my brother was deployed to Afghanistan, my Father was beyond stressed. Even though I was too young to remember, I still remember my Father watching the news and feeling depressed and scared for my brother Guz. Which is why I want people to know what effect it has on not only the troops deployed, but the families left at home. The war on terror is now the longest lasting war in U.S history, it is time for it to come to an end.
I made this video briefly addressing the War on Terror and why we should care about it.

Asking the Time in Español
Asking the time is Spanish is important in order to know your schedule around school.
Here are the simple ways of asking the time;
To ask the time, either say Que hora es?, Que hora son?, or Que hora tiene?
To respond, either start off with "Son las," or "Es la"(If the time starts with a 1.)
Lets say it is 2:00
It would simply be "Son Las dos."
As for if it was 1:00, it would be "Es la una."
