This capstone process was long. I changed my capstone at least three times. My original plan was to create a mural somewhere in the school. Then, I realized that there were already a bunch of art things on the wall in our school building. I finally settled on making abstract art on the ceiling tiles. I decided to form the letters "S-L-A" with three ceiling tiles. I know. that sounds so plain and boring. The creativity comes stems from what I used to make the capstone. I used all my old trans passes from freshman year to senior year. I got this idea from an abstract art class I attended with my uncle. I became familiar with seeing and creating art with things like soda cans, paint and pipe cleaners. I decided to use trans passes due to the fact that I see them as a passageway to knowledge, education, and learning how to communicate effectively with all types of people. To me, trans passes are also a sign of opportunity and mobility. They are a sign of endless possibility (usually up until 7 or 8 o'clock). The people I've been able to meet and connect with because of this resource has literally changed my mindset for the better. For instance, I'm able to travel back and forth from my physical therapy internship. That might not sound like something that can change your life, but physical therapy is my way of helping and giving back to the world.

  • This link speaks on the important aspects of abstract art which include lines, colors, form and space. Of these important aspects, color is what is most important out of the group because of the emotions that colors are capable of bringing out of spectators. According to this link, color is the furthest from the representation of objects, figures, and external reality in general. Kandinsky, the author of this piece views color as a way to view the deeper meaning of the painting or other form of art piece. Kandinsky also believes that colors have a psychological effect on the spectator.

Also, I can use this link in my presentation for where I got most of my information from. It also brings attention to free transportation which is something many people take for granite. This link is more focused on helping businesses thrive but just like businesses, I want my artwork to resonate with a larger group of people. Having a hobby is always good because it keeps the mind sharp. Also, art appeals to both the creative side of your brain and the problem solving side too.

Advanced Essay #4 Motivation of Violence

Posted by Lewis Ford in English 3 - Block - D on Monday, March 21, 2016 at 11:24 pm
Reflecting on my paper, I believe I picked specific points to focus on which made analyzing it pretty easily. I thought it'd be unique to have two different pictures that backed up the two themes I had. My sources were pretty diverse also.

ChildSoldiers
ChildSoldiers

Agunya, 15 (On the right), teaches his little brother Mumbri, 13 (On the left) how to load and aim a semi-automatic weapon after finding their entire family slaughtered by an Angolan terrorist group. “Eu quero matar cada governante Angolano que vejo…” I want to kill every Angolan official I see. Mumbri’s life changed forever after this moment…

Experiencing the annihilation of loved ones changes you in all aspects of life. The feelings of hatred, ignorance, sadness, and reminiscing all brewed together is a recipe for disaster in the streets of Chicago and in the battlefields of Angola. To experience the same tragedy Agunya and Mumbri have and not want to retaliate with the same force or more, takes a very noble and conscientious being. German psychological scientist, Mario Gollwitzer conducted a study where people were partnered up with another person anonymously in different rooms. The partners were asked a series of trivia questions and for every question they got right, they’d win tickets. At the end, the scientist divided the tickets up evenly but told partner #1 that that partner #2 opted to take all of the tickets. The scientist gave the partner #1 the chance to either opt to take all the tickets or split them after finding out what partner #2 decided to do. 60% decided they wanted all of the tickets because partner #2 wasn’t planning on sharing. That same 60% decided to write  notes to their anonymous partners all with smart comments like “You didn’t want to split the tickets so I’m be selfish back and take all of the tickets for myself.” This experiment showed that when people feel unappreciated, retaliation  is a very technique used as an attempt to restore that feeling of appreciation. Agunya and Mumbri suffer from a feeling not being valued. The fact that their family was slaughtered and no one answered for it will evoke this feeling. So as a result of this, the two brothers are on the hunt to retaliate with the same amount or more force to restore that feeling of mattering. Retaliating also provides them with the opportunity to make the Angolans feel the pain that they feel or worst; which is also a desired goal.

GenerationOfSoldiers
GenerationOfSoldiers

Experiencing the annihilation of loved ones changes you in all aspects of life. This change is physical, emotional and most of all mental. The feelings of hatred, ignorance, sadness, and reminiscing all brewed together is a recipe for disaster in the streets of Chicago and in the battlefields of Angola. Martin Luther King once said “As I have walked among the desperate, rejected, and angry young men, I have told them that Molotov cocktails and rifles would not solve their problems. I have tried to offer them my deepest compassion while maintaining my conviction that social change comes most meaningfully through nonviolent action. But they asked, and rightfully so, “What about war?” They asked if our own nation wasn’t using massive doses of violence to solve its problems, to bring about the changes it wanted. Their questions hit home, and I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today: my own government. For the sake of those boys, for the sake of this government, for the sake of the hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent.” This quote addresses the most important reason people become numb to violence in mass numbers. To know that policeman and soldiers are awarded medals like distinguished shooters badge, and expert rifleman badges on a consistent basis for honestly killing people brings a sort of positive vibe to violence as a whole. So for a kid in Chicago to murder someone who sells drugs in his neighborhood and be prosecuted for it, is really hypocritical. He eliminated someone that was a threat to the well-being of his community. Isn’t that the same thing soldiers do and police officers do? Yes it is.

Zulifikar Ali Butto, the Prime Minister of Pakistan once said ““We(Pakistan) will eat grass, even go hungry, but we will get one of our own (Atom bomb).... We have no other choice!” Now let’s think about this… The Prime Minister of an entire country feels as though there is no other way to survive in this world but to acquire something with the power to wipe out a whole city.  If  someone with the power of a Prime Minister believes that surviving in this world is only realistic if you’re able to conduct your own amount of violence, what are people in Chicago who live in poverty supposed to think?

Handcrafting your own Mask

Posted by Lewis Ford in English 3 - Block - D on Monday, January 18, 2016 at 2:22 pm
The goal of my paper was to shine light on the topic of African American males conforming to the ideas and viewpoints society has on us. Reflecting on my paper, I believe I did a phenomenal job at getting my point across of how we only confirm the thoughts and stereotype of society when we commit murders and do other things that negatively impact our communities. I believe that everyone on this planet has a chance to be great in life regardless of the preconceived dilemmas set against them. But in order to be great you have to be different; create your own identity. Writing this paper was something that came pretty easy due to the fact that this directly applies to my life and how I’m perceived.

Question I am investigating: How does society construct or destroy feelings of identity and belonging?

“Wassup Lew. Where you going, yo!?” he shouted as he galloped across the street as if it was his light.

“What’s up Tyreke. I’m headed to the Library. What are you getting into tonight?” I responded.

“Oh you that type nigga!? I didn’t even know we had a library around here! Why the hell you going to the damn library?”

“What do you mean, Tyreke? The type “nigga” that cares about his future?! I retorted as I stormed away…

The feeling I got after this moment was dreadful. I didn’t understand what was wrong or abnormal about an African American male who cares about his future. I couldn’t grasp the idea of why more African American males cared about their future. Then it hit me; I felt like I could answer this question. I was surprised at how simple the answer was actually. I came to the conclusion that us African American males were victims; victims of ourselves and of the system. By this I mean that blacks hold other black back from prosperous, positive lifestyles and so does the system.

The system being how things work and are structured in America.  All the way from 1746 (when blacks were first enslaved 1) to now we have conformed to the lense that society sees us in. We are viewed as these beasts who have no control over what they do.

“In that first year, my first away from my hometown, I was to become thoroughly familiar with the language of fear. At dark, shadowy intersections, I could cross in front of a car stopped at a traffic light and elicit the thunk, thunk, thunk, thunk of the driver--black, white, male, or female--hammering down the door locks. On less traveled streets after dark, I grew accustomed to but never comfortable with people crossing to the other side of the street rather than pass me. Then there were the standard unpleasantries with policemen, doormen, bouncers, cab drivers, and others whose business it is to screen out troublesome individuals before there is any nastiness.2” Personally, each and every line in this quote is a stereotype of this black man. Throughout the whole journal, he had not displayed any actions to warrant these “precautions” taken against him. And that’s what leads me to believe it’s a racial and sex problem.

This is half of the problem. The other half is how us blacks respond to these acts of “safety”. I see why people are scared of us. We confirm every stereotype they have about us. Out of the 21 black males who have been murdered this year, 18 have been murdered by another black man.3  This is a prime example of conforming to the lense society uses to view us.

By Tyreke saying “Oh you that type nigga!?”, he was boxing himself in; taking away a source of knowledge that could propel him to create his own identity instead of wearing the social mask handcrafted for our kind.

Advanced Essay #1: The Beauty in an Imperfect Life

Posted by Lewis Ford in English 3 - Block - D on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at 9:02 am

In this piece, my goal was to portray the beauty behind living an imperfect life. Everyone has times where they feel like life gets hard. What separates people is how they react to these set-backs. My main character, Lewis, writes in his journal about his everyday struggles in an attempt to turn them into fuel which ignites him to keep pushing forward in life.

                                                            Reflection on December 31st, 1999

       Current date: January 12th, 2000                                                                        Journal #1

As I sat in the backyard, I couldn’t fathom what I was reading. My eyes were glued to the hero-like photo of me in the daily newspaper. “Wow” was the only complete english word I could form my lips to say. Was my hard work and dedication beginning to catapult my family and I directly into a life of endless luxury?I felt that the universe was finally speaking back to me with this news article. Those expressive journalist inked the newspaper beside my picture with phrases like “athletically gifted” and “tenacious on both sides of the ball” . In response to this, I felt that I needed to concentrate on living a more focused and positive lifestyle! I decided to start a journal to record my eating habits and things that were constantly on my mind. This happens to be my first entry. My ambitious goal included drinking all water and staying on a strict diet! No candy, chips, soda, or life-shortening fast food!  After an hour of giving the newspaper undisrupted attention, I  laid back on my mattress and plastered my eyes on the walls. The walls were filled with photos of Allen Iverson and Yao Ming. Soon my picture would be up on millions of kids walls too.

                                                                                    To new beginnings...

                                                                                Update on my current life

                                    June 25th, 2000

                                                                                     Journal #2

It’s been awhile since I’ve written… I haven’t been being discipline lately. Just this past week, I’ve indulged in two cheesesteaks, four sodas, three cakes and three bag of chips… I haven’t been feeling too good mentally as of lately. Consistency is something I’m having a hard time becoming associated with. It’s almost like a butterfly. It always seems so easy to catch but as soon as I reach out to touch it, it flutters away slowly giving me enough time to reminisce on the opportunities it would’ve presented for me. The far-fetched “no candy, chips, or soda” mentality lasted two days. On top of that, my brother got shot. I told him to stay out of the streets! It’s a trap! The streets are a black hole. It’ll suck you in if you get too close to it!  I know he takes our dad not being in our life hard and feels as if he has to take desperate measures to provide but damn! He can’t use that as an excuse. I hope this is enough for him to leave this relationship he has formed…It’s a disease that I could see was starting to affect his thought process. As for me, I have to focus on my craft more! I’m slacking terribly. Devastatingly enough, I am only averaging 15 points when I was averaging 23 during last season. College scouts have stopped showing interest in attending my games. Oh yeah, and that melanin goddess, Keisha! Lord have mercy she is beautiful. But I know she’s only here for the ride and a chance to get a piece of the pie. But this pie I had in mind was strictly for my mom and brother to eat. It’s time to get focused! As of right now, I’m going to go sit in the ICU room with my brother. It’s so quiet in there but the air is thick because it’s filled with thoughts of my brother possibly not making it...

                                                                   Be more than exceptional, Lewis.

The copying of my father’s letter

   August 13th, 2000

                                                                                                      Journal #3

Hey kid. I don’t really know how to start this letter. I know we’ve never met but I don’t want that to stop us from bonding and building now. I’ve seen you in newspapers lately. I’m really proud of you. I know you’re probably wondering why I have never been in you or your brothers life. I… I… I had other things to focus on. My life was a broken jigsaw puzzle that I didn’t want to piece together. I wasn’t fit to be a father. I didn’t want to risk not being able to provide for you guys. I thought it’d be better for me to just leave instead of adding two more jigsaw pieces to my life that wouldn’t fit in. I know now that that was a parsimonious decision. That’s why I’m writing you now. I hope to hear from you soon kid. I love you…

                                                                 Your dad.

                     Response to my dad’s letter

      August 27th, 2000

                                                                                                         Journal #4

You have some nerve. You write me asking if we could BUILD a relationship between us?! I guess you read about the sneaker deal I signed with Under Armour and that I committed to the University of Kentucky too. Now all of a sudden, you want to be a dad. You’re pathetic. Catch me on T.V.  putting on for my mom and brother.

                                     Enjoy your life.

                                                                                                              Reflection on Life

                                                                                 September 4th, 2000

                                                                                                   Journal #5

My growth has been tremendous. I’ve been meditating, eating well and helping my mom out with the bills. My brother broke off his relationship with the streets. Now he’s my manager.  Life is going great. I leave for college tomorrow morning. I’m so excited! Over the past 9 months, life has taught me that no matter how hard punches are thrown at you, you always bounce back with a stronger game plan to lessen the impact of those blows. This is the cycle of life. Laurie Notaro, an American writer, once said “If you really believe in what you're doing, work hard, take nothing personally and if something blocks one route, find another. Never give up.” Once I realized that my problems were actually greater than just a road block, I started to connect them to my success today. This is the simple formula for flourishing in life. Despite my brother having history with drug dealing, us growing up in poverty, my dad not being in my life and me struggling with consistency, I still push forward in life to better my families future.

Thank you for the motivation, Universe!

Monologue for World History

Posted by Lewis Ford in World History - Block - B on Monday, October 6, 2014 at 10:04 am
Part 1:This unit we spoke about climate change. We also spoke about how climate change affects people. I believe people in the city don't realize climate change. We aren't affected by it so we don't care about it. We act like we care but we don't. The only people that care about it are people that mostly rely on the environment to survive. My goal for this unit was actually understand how climate change is changing the world. I also wanted to be able to write thought-out monologues.

Part 2:
                                                                                           Stand up

Twenty-five cent!? That’s all you have for me!? Why has my pay been decreasing for the last couple of years?! I can not feed my family with this. Oh you’re sorry That makes it better. Thank you…

Hey honey. Yeah I got it. I can’t keep doing that work for declining pay. Quit? And do what? Just throw the last last 35 years I dedicated to mining work away? That’ll be real great for the family. *Smacks wife*. You’re worthless. Get up and pass me my meds and my leg. It’s over there in the corner. How much did you make today at the kitchen? That’s good. So we’re at 15.25 for the month. I’m going to sleep. I love you too darling… It’ll all get better....

*WAKES UP*

Goodmorning. It’s okay. Get you some coffee. I’ll be okay. Bye. *This leg is so uncomfortable*. Hello, Mr.Kabongo. Funny *fake laugh*. I was coming to speak to you about my pay. What do you mean you don’t have time to talk?! Is this what I have to do to get your attention!? I’ve been your most loyal worker for the last 35 years and you can’t even sit down and have a talk with me!? Unbelievable! *Storms out of office onto the field*. I’m okay Chanko. The man asks as if I haven’t been on this field all my life working for him! I wanted to talk to him about what the future hold for our mining business. *Opens eyes real wide*Is it bad? It’s beyond bad Chank. We need to start a movement to fight climate change. Are you in? Great! I need you to gather everyone that works in the fields and mine workers. Tell them that we will be camping out on the governments lawn. We will be screaming "CLIMATE CHANGE IS KILLING US!" Can you do that? Great! See you tomorrow... *Thoughts* We can fight this. This can change

the world...

A new war

-Slowly drifting away into the trans those *SARCASTIC VOICE WHEN I SAY

LEADER* leaders taught us to gallop towards at night… *pause*

-It helped on the nights when we weren't thrusting knives into throats, and piercing peoples bodies with a mixture of pain and agony.

-No lady.

-The killing is the part you got used too.

-But the unbearable torture that imposed on me brothers at hand, unimaginable.*Long pause*

-Vietnam born and raised lady.

-I was over there fighting the climate changes and people for 22 years.

-The gun and cannon smoke mixed in the air with the blistering sun was what I've dealt with 22 years.

-At first it was bearable. Hot,*PAUSE* but bearable. Over the years, it got worse and worse.

-I started to wear less gear. *PAUSE* I know it wasn't safe.

-*SPEAKS IN AN ANNOYED VOICE*I know it wasn't safe! But I couldn't afford to faint in these circumstances. Hey, hey! That is not apart of your job description! You’re the guru, the zen master of dealing with my kind! What should I do?

-*WAITS A COUPLE SECONDS* Yeah, that's what I thought.

-*SPEAKS WITH A LOW SAD TONE* No response; just like the government of my country.

*CONTINUE SAD TONE* Every night, it just consistently keeps me up. The fact that it’s a world problem and no one is doing anything about it. I don’t want to go outside in the summer. I keep my blinds shut. I’m afraid to drive past factories and see the smoke and fumes being emitted into the air… It just worries me.

-Yeah, it was a good session. Thanks zen master… I mean Ms.Slope. *Murmurs “crazy lady”*

*MAKES PHONE CALL*

-Hey fat Tony. Yeah, I’m doing fine.

-*LOOKS AT ARM* It’s a little itchy. I wish I my real one didn't get blown off. This’ll do though.

-I need you to gather up all our brother and *WHISPERS* tell them we have a meeting on “It.”...

-You know, “it”. The only fight harder than the enemy. The invisible fight.

-1198 Callow drive at 2200 tonight.

-QUIET DOWN, QUIET DOWN *PAUSES*

-I’m happy to see everyone.

The reason I called us all together is to address an issue that affects all of us. SETTLE DOWN, SETTLE DOWN! Now I know the first we spoke to the government about it, it didn’t end well. *Starts to sweat*

-But we’re warriors and warriors never quit.

-I want us to put together a rally together to get this problem worked on.

-It’s a big deal! Lives depend on our fight!

The government will not listen to those regular people in our society. It’s our time to be leaders!

-*POINTS SOMEWHERE IN CROWD* What’s your question? Yes. We meet at the board house and we stay out there as long as we need to get there attention. From there, we’ll demand that a bill or plan is put into place for our countries arriving years, to cut down on the amount of factories being built, and the amount of people driving gas cars.

From this, our nightmares won’t be ended but at least we can know that the future generation will enjoy their lives…

THANK YOU, THANK YOU.

Subliminal suicide

        Dear mother,

I’m falling… We’re falling I mean. Into a hole impossible to get out of. respected and cherished me. Don’t I deserve that? I just hope that some sense is pounded into the heads of those earthlings. I can’t deal with getting treated badly anymore. Why can’t I just be respected? I feel unappreciated, disrespected, and misused. The fill  me up with litter and debris. Carbon monoxide is constantly being injected into my bloodstream. Do they know I belong to them? Generally, when you own something, you take good care of it so it can last long. Don’t they love me? It wasn’t like this as I was growing up. People weren’t greedy, selfish, and ignorant. They only used the resources I provided when they needed it. My friends are getting cut down everyday to build injection plants to pump more monoxide into me. I think it’s time I just end it. I think about ending it everyday I get mishandled. I’m useless. At least that’s what they show me. There are consistent events headlined “TAKE CARE OF THE EARTH… IT’LL BE BENEFICIAL TO EVERYONE.” That’s a bunch of crap! They focus on my disease a couple times a year and litter the rest of the time. No! You CAN’T do that! It has to be a collective effort! Everyone recycle. Everyone change the light bulbs they have. Everyone cut down on the gas they use. If this doesn't happen soon, we’ll all die. Maybe I should end it now. Write back with your thoughts and suggestions when you get chance.

Sincerely,

Earth.

b. How did learning this thing make your drawings better? My lines were more confident and and I was proud of my work.

c. If you did this assignment again, what would you do differently?I would use my time more wisely if I did this project over.

d. What is your advice to someone who has never drawn a one point perspective drawing before?USE YOUR TIME WISELY!

e. What resource helped you the most and why? A ruler helped me the most because without it, my lines would be wiggly.

Lewis' Slide

Posted by Lewis Ford in Technology- Freshmen - Hull - y1 on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at 4:06 am

Hello, I'm Lewis. My goal for my presentation is to make everyone's day a little bit better. I chose my background because I am 100% certain that every student in this room can relate to this picture. We all have times where we feel like our lives are just so bad. But as we grow older, we see that those teenage crisis years/growing up years were actually funny experiences. We all can remember a time where we through a fit over something we thought we wanted bad, now we look back on it and laugh. For example, when I was little I wanted a giraffe. My mom obviously said "no" because it wasn't realistic to have a giraffe living in my closet. For two weeks I cried "give me giraffe"(Lionel). Now I think "what in the world was I thinking asking for a giraffe?". At that time this was a negative in my life. But it has helped me grow into the realistic thinker I am now, which can be looked at as a development in life. So whenever you are feeling down because something bad is going on in your life, just know that it is helping you develops a detailed picture called life.
