Q4 Benchmark

Posted by Tyikenyua Anthony in Storytelling - Rami - C on Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at 10:36 pm
  • What did you set out to do?

In this benchmark I set out to create a piece that will tell a story of something that impacted my life in a tremendous way. I decided to make this piece of art very personal and make myself vulnerable to the public. I used the lovers dictionary and the book of qualities as mentor texts what I created is very similar. This work is more than a replication of those pieces, but a journey that documents a peak time in my life.

  • How does your work incorporate the art of storytelling?

It incorporates this art by telling a story. As a storyteller I set out with a goal, learned new things, gained new experiences, and wrote along the way. My final products goal is to tell a story in a different way than I would usually do it.

  • What do you hope your audience gains from your work?

I really don’t want this piece of work to go viral. I would like to keep it between Rami and I. My only hope is that she gains some understanding of the things that happened in my life and how I have progressed into something different.

  • What did you gain from doing this work.

My only hope was  to fulfill my passion as a writer with this piece of work. Discover who I was as a person and analyze the various situations in my life. I think I am very accomplished with this piece and it is filled with many thoughts and emotions. Overall, I enjoyed this process and I am nervous for someone other than myself to read it.

Many people take selfies for different reasons. To share them with friends, to keep them in private albums, or the usual flick of the day. Personally, selfies have become an everyday ritual in my life. I take them when I’m happy, sad, mad, or in any kind of mood. Of course there is something more behind just the picture. The selfie represents something with more meaning. I took lots of consideration when choosing three self portraits that represent my life. While I am a very private person, most of my life could be told through just one selfie. My friends are a big part of my life and is in 90% of my pictures. They appear in the picture but how they contribute to my life doesn’t. They are strong people who build my character each day and I think that is something you could not just tell from a selfie. My next portrait reflects the great love that I have for food. Chipotle is my favorite restaurant and I present that to the world clearly, with almost every post. The last picture reflects what I like to do in my free time. Stories help define my life and I spend a great deal of time reading and relating the books I read to my life. Throughout all of these pictures they all have one similarity. They are things that impact and influence my life and is apart of it everyday. This is how I reflect myself to the world with the things seen and unseen.

#Write2connect

Writing helps me connect by bringing my words to life. All of my thoughts and everything in my mind takes a form when I start writing. Sometimes I have a hard time connecting my words with a meaning, in times like that my words determine their own destiny. Writing connects my imagination with the world. Writing helps me communicate with the world. It helps me to connect with people, to understand where they are coming from and their stories. Writing helps me get through life by sharing my ideas and sharing a message. Writing is essential to life and it helps the world understand each other.

Close Reading

Posted by Tyikenyua Anthony in English 3 - Rami on Friday, March 1, 2013 at 8:00 pm

As Laertes is preparing to return to school in Paris Polonius offers some wise counsel to his son. These words of advice that is offered are a very significant part of the play. The language of the speech and the way it is delivered has great impact on the perspective you receive when its read. Before I read the speech i looked over the things before it and predicted some of the things that could happen after it. This helped me with analyzing the deeper meaning behind the words and not just viewing it as plain text.

I had two different approaches when reading this particle piece. The first time i read it i played the role of Laertes with receiving the speech. The second time i read it i took the role of Polonius with delivering it. Each time i practiced this the words would have different meanings. Just like Shakespeare takes on different roles as the Shakespeare the poet and the dramatist. I took on two roles as the father and the son. As a father i was giving my son instruction on how to conduct himself in the world, to give a good representation of his name and the name of the family. As a son i was receiving these words and tucking them into my memory for future reference.

“There; my blessing with thee!” With genuity and authority this invitation and command is given. The father is allowing his son to go and venture out and take the blessing with him with in his journey. Everything that precedes from this point has much more meaning. “Give thy thoughts no tongue, Nor any unproportioned thought his act.Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar.” The language of the words encourages you to think beyond what you see. You would interpret to give no words to your thoughts but it means much more. Giving your thoughts no tongue, to think before you speak or perform an action. This is a life lesson that could be carried on. Choosing who you associate with too is important and is also emphasized by polonius. The advice that he gives his son is sincere and everything that he says he has the best intentions with.

As polonius continues with his speech he addresses common matters that will appear. I think he make these connections with his experiences that he probably had in his life. Some of the advice given looks familiar because it is heard often. “Beware Of entrance to a quarrel, but being in,Bear't that the opposed may beware of thee.Give every man thy ear, but few thy voice;” We have all been warned to avoid fights and disagreements but if we have to, make them to the best account. Listen more than we talk, and to observe more than we react.

From this speech i got that your character is something that should be valued in all your endeavors no matter what you do. Value your name, your family, and consider the blessings of someone wiser who has more experience. Examine yourself and make sure all your intentions are good and beware of those who might be against you. Receive a blessing and live the best possible life, all of this relates completely to the advice Polonius gave his son before he embarked on his journey.

Tyikenyua and Sara's Circuits project :)

Artist statement

We chose to build our circuit inside of a cheetah print wedge. We chose this shoe from any other shoe because we really thought it represented our point brilliantly. Tyikenyua and I are very involved in fashion, and that's something we share an interest in. We thought that this wedge represented our love for fashion well, because it was exotic and out there. It's fun, and something you would wear to a party. This shoe is creative, unique, and just looks like you would have a fun time. We feel as if that's our dedication to fashion is the same way.

A review of "Out Of My Mind"

Posted by Tyikenyua Anthony in English 3 - Rami on Friday, November 2, 2012 at 12:59 pm
“Deep within me, words pile up in huge drifts. Mountains of phrases and sentences and connected ideas. Clever expressions. Jokes. Love songs. Every word my parents spoke to me or about me I absorbed and kept and remembered. All of them.

...But only in my head. I have never spoken one single word. I am almost eleven years old....”
excerpt from chapter 1 from “Out of my Mind”

Sharon M. Draper is an accomplished writer and a winner of many awards for her compelling pieces. She has received much praise for all her publications, and she continues to write more. Draper loves to write she says “words flow easily from my fingertips, and my heart beats rapidly with excitement as an idea becomes a reality on the paper right in front of me.” With such ambition, Draper captivates readers with every single word that’s read in her books. The most compelling is Out of my Mind, which is a story about a young girl having a battle between her distinctions and “normality.”

Melody Brooks is an eleven year old girl born with cerebral palsy. This disability hinders Melody from communicating ideas, and she has never spoken a single word. Unlike any ordinary fifth grader, Melody is unable to walk and care for herself. This disability may have fractured 10 year old Melody Brooks’s body, but it has not affected her mind. Melody is a brilliant child with a photogenic memory that allows her to store and analyze everything that happens in her life. Melody is a genius, but nobody knows it. How would you feel if you were brilliant and you couldn’t communicate any of your thoughts?

Out of My Mind is a book that should be read by everyone. Ten year old Melody Brooks displays a positive way to deal with difficulties of her world by living above all expectations people set for her. Melody’s unquenchable thirst for knowledge encourages her to move on and not quit. She has the help of an electrical word board thats connects to her wheelchair. This device allows her to create phrases, and it speaks her words aloud. This machine allows Melody to express some of her thoughts but its not capable to prove her real intelligence.

Although she is so young she has experienced so much already. Dealing with bullies, being misjudged, not having a choice in some decisions, and the worse part, not being able to say anything. Discouraged by her peers, Melody is afraid to venture out. Until one day when Melody takes the greatest challenge of her life and competes against her “normal” classmates. She joins a quiz team and all goes well in the first competition, but then things stir up when she is betrayed. Melody’s world comes crashing down, and other tragedies that happened at the same time. Melody continues to push on through all of this and every challenge thrown at her. In the end Melody is victorious. I highly recommend this book to everyone! This book is enjoyable and attracts any age group that has a thirst for learning and discovering just like Melody.

Reflection

Posted by Tyikenyua Anthony in American History - Jonas on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 11:06 pm

  • The thing that surprised me the most about the information was the decrease of immigration over the years because of certain events. Things like war in America and depression would slow down the number of immigrants that enter the land. This was surprising because i thought no matter the circumstances immigrants would still want to come into America for Freedom and all the opportunities. The obvious things would be the increase of immigration in period of times when things were going bad in countries. Famines and Agricultural changes were common, also job loss bringing more immigrants over. The trend for the next two decades will increase in the US as the economy gets better. Thats the trend i predict but i think it will be a small decrease over a small period of time. We made the decision to visually represent our data by using a lucid chart. As a group we all came to a consensus to use that because we thought it would be easy for everyone to understand. It also presents information well and its self explanatory. The most challenging part of group work was collaborating everyones ideas and putting it into one project and making it come together. We all wanted to represented it in a different way but we all finally came to an agreement. If i would do this project differently i would use a different visual but try to present the information similarly.

“Hard work leads to a lifetime of accomplishments”  (Jessica Marorano)

Throughout the year in History/English I have learned many different things. The topics I studied varied in subjects and made real world connections. Each piece of work that was done in both classes was a continual process. Nothing was just done and over with. I worked hard with my peers in perfecting and editing my work to make sure that it was the best. I think I deserve a gold star for the completion of each assignment.

The most memorable topic of study in History was the playwright. I joined the school in the middle of the semester and when I came one of my first assignments was to write a play. This was one of my biggest challenges that I faced. I had no idea what I was writing nor did I have any ideas for a topic. Over the weeks I began reading my peers plays and began working with a play expert who helped me with a idea and sort of gave me a guideline of what to do. I worked hard and thoroughly for months and with dedication I eventually created a masterpiece. This project gave me an opportunity to express myself and display my creativity to everyone.  I think this play was one of the biggest obstacles that I overcame and succeeded with during this year so far. Click here to view the entire play.

One of the most memorable pieces in English was the Poetry Wiki. Each class period we learned about a poet and analyzed their poetry and got ideas for our own. We expressed many of our life stories and circumstances with our poems. Some poems like our found poems were totally made up of phrases and sentences that we heard throughout the day. This was one of the most unique poems in the entire wiki.

Along with working with peers, we also collaborated with others. For a couple of weeks everyone was working with the Leah stein dance company. This workshop was during our freedom unit where we analyzed prison stories, read graphic novels, and most importantly worked with Leah to create expressions of art. This ongoing process was very different and quite interesting. We worked with the environment and with things that we see everyday to perform or tell a captivating story through our dance moves. Click here to view our process.

“Creativity is the reason of ones work to express the power of ones mind.” (Sean McAninch)

That is the general understanding I get when I am working. I am creating masterpieces to express the power of my mind. “Without struggle there is no thrive to work harder.” Everything during this year wasn’t so easy to accomplish. I think one if the most difficult projects for me was the Revolutionary Guidebook. Over a period of time we studied different revolutions then it was our turn to teach all about a revolution. I had the chance to apply all the knowledge I obtained and teach it to someone else as if they had no clue about the subject. That was a struggle for me because I had such a hard time getting my ideas across. I had a hard time explaining what I learned in a way that made it easier for others. Eventually I overcame that challenge, passing it wasn’t so easy.

In English we studied about crossing boundaries and passing. There were a lot of fun activities within that unit. My favorite was the Passing reenactment. We read the book passing then it was our job to reenact the scene and present it to the class. Making the video was really fun it was my first time collaborating with a group. (Click here for the video.) I worked hard with each assignment and I succeeded, each piece is wonderful. These classes has helped me get a better understanding of myself and the world.

Tyikenyua: Journal entries

Posted by Tyikenyua Anthony in English 2 - Block on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 5:19 pm
History Journal

Freedom

How would you define freedom?

I would define freedom as the liberty to do whatever you want, whenever you want under certain circumstances. You’re able to make your own choices and decisions.

·      No set boundaries

·      No restrictions

·      Ability to obtain life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness

·      Just and equal

·      Voice

·      Belief

·      Emotion

·      Not under any one else control

·      To speak or not to speak

·      Privileged

·      Do anything

·      No government oppression

·      Restriction free

English Journal 51

Prison Population rates: x/100,000

1)    United States (753)

2)    Saint Kits (660)

3)    Russia (609)

4)    Rwanda (593)

5)    Virgin Islands (US) (561)

6)    Cuba (531)

7)    British Virgin Islands (488)

8)    Georgia (483)

9)    Palau (483)

10) Beliz (478)

Reason why prison population numbers are high

·      Strict rules

·      Power

·      Freedom

·      No fear

·      Drugs

·      Violence

·      Property

·      Public order

·      Harsher laws

·      Racial turmoil

·      Murder

·      Sexual offenses

·      Burglary and robbery

·      Theft/identity

History Journal

Race

10 points of interest

·      Race is a modern idea

·      Race had no genetic basis

·      Slavery predates race

·      Race and freedom were born together

·      Race justified social inequalities as natural

·      Human subspecies don’t exist

·      Skin color is only skin deep

·      Most variation is within and not between races

·      Race is not biological but racism is still real

·      Colorblindness will not end racism

One idea that I think strikes, as surprising is the idea that race is modern. Back then they said people were grouped by religion or language or social status. I still consider that happening today. So saying race is modern is sort of a contradiction to all the facts given because people were categorized by race centuries ago.

Another idea I think that strikes as truth is that race and freedom were born together. Equality and freedom was based on tour race, which helped determine the freedom and rights of people.

“race is a social construction”

We had the great opportunity of having Las Cazuela cater food to our class. The food was very tasty and it was different from what we were used too. The luncheon gave us all a chance to experience different Spanish foods and broaden our horizons. We were encouraged to try everything and learned not to judge just off of looks. I enjoyed all of the dishes but I loved the Tacos dorados the most!
